County opts out of new ATV law

A new state law allowing use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) on unpaved roads no longer applies in Suwannee County. The County Commission voted to opt out of the law at a chaotic Oct. 17 meeting which saw angry exchanges between those on both sides of the issue.
The new statute, which took effect Oct. 1, changed Florida law to allow ATVs on unpaved public roads with speed limits less than 35 miles per hour. Children would require adult supervision.
A number of residents at the meeting complained of road damage caused by ATVs. They said that riders sometimes purposely damage graded roadways by cutting “doughnuts†into the surface. Others worried that easing restrictions on ATVs would increase the number of injuries and deaths caused by the vehicles. Numerous fatalities and serious injuries have resulted from use of ATVs in Suwannee County in recent years.

Dirt bikers, hikers, and four-wheel drivers are working together to map a system of off-road trails within the Tahoe National Forest.
Tahoe National Forest Service personnel Monday hosted a public workshop to map off-highway vehicle routes near Truckee and Sierraville. The meeting was designed to gather public input, indicate where existing roads and trails are, and to present proposed OHV routes.
The forest service is considering a number of factors in the route designation process, including environmental impact, maintenance, and safety, said Joanne Roubique, Truckee district ranger.
Skateboard Park, ATV Area Considered

Councilman Tommy Keiser gave an update, during the Buena Vista City Council meeting of Oct 12, on his efforts to look into the possibility of establishing a skateboard park and finding an area that could be used for driving all-terrain vehicles.
Keiser said he's talked with a representative of a company that built a skateboard park in Staunton, and plans to have this person give a report at a future City Council meeting. He said he'd like to see a skateboard park developed where the school bus parking lot and maintenance area currently is, near the intersection of 16th Street and Magnolia Avenue, if an alternative location can be found for the school bus parking lot and maintenance area. The area he's eyeing is adjacent to the city's outdoor basketball courts.

Winter Driving Tips

When winter sets in, you want to be assured that your vehicle will make it through the coldest conditions. That's why it's a good idea to follow a few simple winter driving tips and guidelines to keep your car or truck on the road during the winter months.
It's important to check several key areas of the car on both the outside and the inside. It is also important to carry certain items in your car at all times. This ensures that you're properly prepared in case of engine failure, an accident, or in case you are lost.
* Before heading out, check the weather and traffic reports for your local area and your final destination.
Creating an Emergency Road Kit for Your Car

by Jeremy Henricks
Keeping an emergency road kit in your vehicle may mean the difference between sitting on the side of the road waiting for help, or reaching your final destination.
Because of limited trunk space, most emergency road kits include too few items, but here's what we recommend as essential items:
* Buy or put together a first aid kit (see "Preparing a First Aid Kit").
* Include everything needed to change a tire: a two-ton floor jack (or equivalent), a fully aired spare tire, a lug nut wrench or tire iron, and a pipe for leverage. Most vehicles come with these items, but you should verify that you have everything listed, or it'll be next to impossible to change a tire.
Guide to Choosing a GPS for Off-road Driving

How Useful is a GPS?
GPS navigation can make the difference between an off-road adventure and disaster.
Points of Interest
4WD vehicles can take you to some amazing places. When you find a great back-road, marsh, desert flat, etc., record the spot with your GPS receiver. The GPS can guide you back there again in the future so you can relive the adventure. Or you can share your trip into with others, even over the Internet.
Pre-Trip Planning
GPS is great for pre-trip planning. Mark the location of good places to set up camp and mark off dangerous areas that you want to steer clear of. Off road racers can use GPS receivers to determine paths that will cut time off a course. Also use GPS to establish rendezvous coordinates so you can meet up with fellow off-roaders.
