In this episode we talk to Nic Booth and Gage Mogle; both recently tagged out on their archery general season with Mule deer that scored over 200” each. It’s a rare occurrence to see such awesome bucks come from a general archery unit, but when they do, the story is always epic. We also recently updated our online optics store, so if you want to shop the best optics in the industry, at the best pricing, head over to epicoutdoors.com and login to our store to shop.

Hey everybody. Jason Carter. Adam Bronson coming at you from Southern Utah. Of course. We got the majority of the crew here ’cause we just threw a new magazine together. Except for John. Where’s John?

He’s throwing the magazine together. Yeah.

John’s busy. We’re we’re happy. We’re done.

Our desks are clean.

John’s been working all night. How is it that he works all night? All night, every mag? I don’t know. I think it is by choice. He’s gonna hear this podcast get mad at me. Yeah. I don’t know. It’s just, it’s every magazine. Those you guys is artists. They have certain hours. I their brains are just better. Yeah.

I guess. He’s, he’s a man. I was here last night for a little while and he was out, he was way later than

I was. And I had to go to bed. Yeah. When you get older, older, it gets easier the older you get. Is that true? Yeah, it does. You work harder. All the things. Logan. Huh?

It would be nice to get

Older. Yeah. So anyway, we’ve had, we’ve got some interesting things in interesting happenings in our personal lives. I want, yeah, it was just, well,

What are we talking about?

Well,

I don’t know. I would just think we ought to talk about some wasps and stuff like, this is

Deon discovered Podcast.

Podcast

Worthy? This is funny stuff. There’s a,

There’s a saying for it.

BLD.

That’s true. Bad luck. Bad luck, Devin.

Bad luck, Devin. So Devin always has the story. You chase

By turkeys,

I mean, everybody Yeah, everybody that’s listening. Do you remember the turkeys chasing him on the four-wheeler? And then he has proof,

Proof

Video. You know what I’m saying? And then the owl, and then we upstairs through his soul. Yeah. And then

We got video. He’ll make it up of these yellow jackets coming outta the ground.

And we have a doorbell ringer. What is it? What do they call those? The little video ring. Doorbell ring, yeah. Anyway. And, and

I have a motion light with a camera. So, and

Deon

Don’t be poking around my residence.

I will see you. Deon brings the video and shows us of the attack. How many

Confirms stings did you get, Devin?

I think I had eight. Yeah.

And you pulled stingers out of your, your lower back? Something

Attached to my side here

Pretty soon. He’s shirtless. There’s some shirtless dude running around his mouth.

Honestly, I would’ve took, I was on my porch. Yes. The only thing I had on was my shoes and my pants.

Did you ever think to go inside the house where there’s no hornets?

That’s what that was my next, I don’t wanna bring him in the house.

Yeah, you didn’t wanna bring him in there. It was your wife and daughter in there. Yeah. You, that’s, that’s kinda like

They were gone somewhere. Okay.

Well,

Did you think about going for the shotgun? Well, so how did it end? Did you win? I

Won, but how many trips to Ace did it call? Because several take ’cause you called me between each trip I bought four different cans of brands of spray and,

And how many of

’em worked? None. Yeah.

These things were bionic. This is a new species.

I know. And I’m like, I Adam, you and I are how old have we ever had these problems?

No. Maybe it just B ld. That’s what we’re talking about.

They just, I pissed ’em off. I didn’t even know they were there, but yeah. No, it,

So what were they, ground,

Ground yellow

Jackets or yellow jackets or carpenter bees or something. They were in the ground and

In your lot, they didn’t know that you owned the place.

They do now. I sprayed expanding foam into the crack where they were going. And

Is it like in a, in a canister or what it,

They’re between two railroad ties, like a retaining wall. And then I had to get some powder spraying there.

Substance?

Yeah. Some seven, 5%. 10 80 powder. 10 oh oh

Cancer. Cancer causing

Yeah. You don’t wanna be downwind. Yeah. Within 24 hours they were toast, I think.

Yeah.

So I won the battle.

But the proof is

Freaking hurts.

The proof is amazing. You know,

Show got away.

When you, when you advertise this podcast, you throw the little video clip.

If he’s gonna send it to me, I’d be surprised. How are you gonna obtain that?

Well, well that you team player. It’s, man. No, it’s not. It’s, I

Would’ve ran the same way.

I couldn’t find my hat, Jason. I didn’t know where it was. It

Was in the backyard. It was in the, was

The, my shirt was in the driveway. My glasses were on the garage floor.

Would you you have safety leather

Glasses?

Leather or what? On

My sunglasses.

Oh, okay.

It was, I was panicked and the whole way was around the house. I was getting hit.

Did you have a neighbor witness this? ’cause

Thank goodness. No. Oh, okay.

That was

Just Roger, my neighbor saw me spraying the nest when I had a hoodie on 80 degrees.

It’s what’s going on? It’s like you’ve lived in a basement for the last 10 years and you come out and it’s just the world and it’s bright and I mean, it’s just, everything’s interesting. Everything happens to you. Everything’s interesting. Everything’s ama like scary. The world’s scary.

Now. We all know what we, what we need the powder we need to have on. That’s

Not Okay, one more Devon story. Oh. Tell us about your living conditions up there. Now come on.

I’m not gonna tell you guys details anymore.

I haven’t heard about this one.

I may have the H virus.

Whoa. Remember Bruns, when I used to call it the Honda virus, I didn’t even know what it was. Anyway, so just

A basement, a

Basement of

A ranch house that hadn’t been opened. And

1400 years and a time Devin decides to go ahead and vacuum the plate.

You did?

Yeah. I vacuumed, I mean,

Washed his sheets

Had carpet.

Yeah. But it was, it

Creates stuff. The dust storm.

I was gonna say that can be a, a law of diminishing returns. It makes it worse. You just, you’re you’re doing, you’re digging up dander from the seventies probably when you did that. Oh,

That’s disgusting. Yeah. I think that really, that’s bothersome.

Well, the one thing, the hornets, the one good thing is Evan’s immune system, bit by bit is becoming the strongest on planet earth.

This is the same guy’s got a bunker out on the script ready for the end of day. I mean, just love these stories anyway. We, it’s

Favorite animal on planet earth as a wolverine.

I’m putting that, I’m topless, running, screaming. I mean, I may have said, I don’t even know what I said.

Will you just sign, have him sign away? Yeah.

Okay. I think it’s part of employment. Yeah.

Well, and Oh, geez. And you know, he can beep out stuff on audio Devin, to make it. I

Don’t think I, I

Don’t think he swear

Pretty

Crazy. I was, but it was funny. He was running back your desperation back and forth. And it’s like, anyway, I would do the same thing, but I wouldn’t go think to check the camera footage.

What made my wife did, did she, did she? Yeah. I was like, I ended up on the porch with my shirt off.

She needed it proof. I You were alone.

They followed me the entire way. Like I was, yeah.

She just was like, there’s my man protecting our dog. Thank,

If I was allergic, I wouldn’t have made it to the fricking porch.

Well you, Ted, you went inside and took a couple Benadryl, didn’t you? Goodness.

Did they? I got three or four of ’em right here on the back of my ear and my neck. Right on my breathing area.

Anyway, you breathe through your back. Yeah. So Logan, you’ve had some water issues. What? Let’s start with the tent.

What happened to you though,

Logan? I love that tank. I’ve been gone too. But there’s some situations that it’s just

You. Well, you know how we’ve had this, you flooded it last year. These monsoons that are,

Well, I, I can’t tell when the rain’s coming. Geez. When I’m out of service, it’s too late to do anything. Oh. And I, I set up my tent co over there and woke

Up And Is this the Devon? The Devon special? These tent

Cos I think it’s the same one Devon has. Yeah. And they’ve got a rain fly. But it takes so long to put up that by the time it starts raining and you get out and put it up, it all your stuff is already wet. I, and so I have went and slept in the passenger seat of my truck. I thought you learned last year in New Mexico not to do that, but apparently not. No, I haven’t learned my lesson yet. What of that thing? It took the whole hunt to dry it out. Oh, he soaked his mattress completely

Like last, last year. Well, you pee the best. Well,

No, actually, I rained on me the night I got in and so I left it out, all the flaps up to dry and cat. And it was crushed again. Hot, hot and dry that day. And so we went out that morning and we’re coming back in that morning, smashed with flash rainstorms. And that thing

Is, it literally takes like two seconds to put the rain fly. That’s what

I told her. I’m not fast enough I guess I don’t have your, I don’t have your skillset dev.

Oh,

You need to put it up before you go to bed. Not really that

That your, the last time I got flooded I put the thing on, but I was too lazy to loop it through the legs. Yeah. And it blew off. Doesn’t do. Yeah, it three inches of water.

Oh, you had one of those stories. I remember that. Was that Nevada? Yeah.

So Al Tree, the alt tree looking into your soul. I mean, it’s like the shoe tree. Nevada’s the only place on earth that has,

We got one up Cedar Canyon now. Have you guys been noticing that and taking shape? No.

Oh, is

It really? Oh yeah. Right around the corner. Geez. Right around the red corner where the rock climbers are.

Anybody needs a pair of shoes? There you go. There you go. Yep. Let’s see. Logan, so also you about flooded out in your house the other day, huh?

Oh yeah. It rained pretty good in Cedar. My house is in a terrible spot for flood zone. And so we You

Go under that underpass. Yeah, it’s like four foot of water hold right there.

Yeah. And so I was actually in Nevada when my roommate sent me a video and it was like our doorstep. It was like two or three inches from the top of our doorstep. But they knew, I’m assuming when they built there, because they built our driveways on an incline. So it gets pretty close to our garage and our doorstep. But it doesn’t flood.

Do you have any new catfishing stories for us?

I haven’t been catfished lately. I’ve been careful. Oh, I think I’m learning.

All right. That’s good. Hey,

That

You’re learning from past experience. That’s all

You. I I only need one.

Wyatt, do you have any glassing tips for glassing through hazy conditions? No.

It just

Smoky

Conditions. It’s un unbeatable. You

Just, yeah. Throw

In the towel. Kind of gotta go with it. So look a lot closer than what you normally would kind of makes scouting big country pretty tough. We just had a lot of fire. What

Are we talking about?

Just smoky conditions. Glassing. He’s been glassing through smoking conditions. You

Got some new glass speaking of, didn’t you? What? Yeah,

I picked up the new SRO twelves. So el, el twelves. The rangers? Yeah.

Did you try ’em out?

I have not tried ’em out yet. They’re just showed up yesterday. So

You’re working with the app and pushing ballistic profiles and stuff to it?

Yeah. Haven’t, haven’t even got that far yet. Need, need to get it done. Yeah. So

That’s an awesome imminent need here. What

Do you, what do you, what did you leapfrog from? What are you currently using?

I just you I’ve been using the tens but el Yeah, the 10 EL ranges. Yeah. So I have the tens and the EL rangers, but I just wanted something a little bit more powerful so maybe I didn’t have to pack my fourteens around as much. So

When you’re doing the twelves, what are you gonna use for a spotter? A big spotter or like a medium or light

Small. My spotty scope. Yeah, I have that Suros. A TC. That soro A TC. That I’m gonna

The 95

A-T-A-T-C. The small

17. Oh, a little at TC. The 45.

45.

Yeah. 17 to 40.

Alright. Yeah. So that’s a good, can use that as a backpacker. STC

Straight.

Yeah. Sorry. It is the s st. Are you a straight guy? I did go with, with the straight in that scope.

Straight.

I knew you’d come around

Just primarily for the window mount

Auction. Oh, but you’re not, you’re going, I think you set a backpack set up. So Yeah, it’s

Not

Necessarily window

Mount just slides in any old

Yeah, just top backpack. Convenient. I remembered that because I used it the other day and I was

Like, did you use it? I had

To kink

My, it was a while ago in July. But

Yeah. So what do you think about the 40 power? Is that enough?

I think it’s gonna be enough for a backpacker to,

Well, to know if you got a shooter or Yeah.

Know whether you gotta get a closer look or not. Yeah. So I think it’s gonna be great for that. Not have to pack the 95 everywhere there.

Well, you don’t wanna pack that any 99, 95 in back country. I mean it’s, unless you got a horse llama, tw, something like that. Right. Dev? I mean, if you don’t have that,

Do you got a tw I have none of those. Do you have a workable tw right now? Ord. You sell yours? I

Have no llamas goats pack mules. Nothing. I said no

Tw

I do not have a tw You got rid of it?

Yeah. In preparation to buy yours?

It ain’t for sale.

No, I, I sold that a long time ago. I was say

That was years ago. I do.

Ever since I missed. Yeah.

I never Are you in the market?

We’ll talk later. Okay. Alright.

Well after you talk to Jason, talk to me.

I’ve told you, are you serious right now? Okay. I

Just love Devin to think that I’m about ranger

Mine’s brand new listed on

Marketplace

The other night. The other night. Jason sends me a text and it’s a video. Just,

Were you on

Yours? Gears just

Burning some gas. You gotta burn some gas. Every couple,

Whatever. And cherry gas. And it’s, and a brand new battery. 85

R cane and

73 miles now.

Because I’ll bet when I owned mine I bought six batteries in the, in the

Years. I have, they’re terrible. They’re one year one battery. They they’re disposable. They’re like 10 pounds mean this is a

Legit big battery. But anyway. Alright, moving on. Do we have any other personal stories? Josh? You got anything?

I’ve got nothing.

You know, that’s not true.

I’ve got nothing.

Just nothing you wanna say out loud. I’m,

I’ve been doing nothing. I, I went out this weekend and we went around, looked for some sheep. But that was you and Judson had an adventure. Yeah. Yep. We went out and looked at some sheep, so that was good.

How about this, how about the electric truck you were smoked by?

Oh, Rivian. Yeah.

Yeah.

One of those

Didn’t even help a fella out.

No. What do you

Mean? He just broke down. Needed a charge.

No, he was fine. He was just had to wait for the clay to drive

Clay to drive. Even if you were to get him out, what are you gonna do? Get stuck in five, five yards. Yeah.

He needed, he was just sitting there making pottery in the road.

Were you in on a,

Was he

He

Really was like, had a big old wad of it and he’s just like, I’m gonna make a pot out of this.

And you were on a wheeler side by side. So you were all right. Yeah.

Oh yeah. We were like taking it off his, his tires.

Yeah. Pulling it off the tires and stuff.

And he was gonna keep it, those

Roads get terrible. Keep it

Moy. They keep it moist and make a little pot. Huh.

I’ve never known anybody to manually pull mud off

Their tongue. That’s, he was like, he’d been there. He said he’d been there for, which he’d probably been there for two hours overnight. ’cause we waited in the truck for two hours before I even

Touched that area.

Yeah. I was like, I’m

Give, I rescued a family from Shanghai out there one time. Told me if they ever come to Shanghai, I’m welcome to look em up. I think there’s, do you remember their name? 17 million people in Shang? I don’t know how many, but I think I’m not gonna find them.

They have the yellow pages. Do they have yellow pages?

Yeah, but I chat

GTPI

Just said, Hey, this one’s on me.

We got,

They had a two wheel drive Escalade rental.

Yeah.

Imagine in that in Clay.

That’s why I, I just will never buy a rental. I’ve seen too many of ’em out there in the parade.

They would be cutting down roads that MapQuest say that is a good road and cut from A to B cut through this one.

It’s pretty, it’s pretty crazy though in some of that country now. Just even from five, 10 years ago, the amount of, I dunno what you call ’em, overlander people. Oh yeah.

Overlanders.

Yeah. Like they’ve all got their little popup tents and stuff and is that what they call

Hashtag van lines?

You’re like out there in the middle of nowhere and you kind of think like you’re in the middle of nowhere and it was about an hour before sunset and all of a sudden just, just hoards of people just start coming out to all these points and stuff to camp the night and

Chill out.

It’s crazy. Yeah,

It’s what Blogs and internet posts, dude. Oh yeah. About people want to get married and take their pictures here and there and we Yeah. We rescued a wedding out there once too. Yeah. Aaron drove the bride home before the grim did. That’s the story. Oh.

Oh,

Thanks. Literally we’re coming off the, there’s

Lots of

Firsts. I’m gonna tell the story. I’m gonna tell the story ’cause Aaron will kill me if I don’t. But yeah, we’re coming off one of those points in one of those just at dark like you said. Yeah. And they’d taken all their pictures and had their wedding out on one of those points. Yeah. And then it’s dark. We’re all driving home, going to camp and it, it started crushing. Yeah. And they were ahead of us or them and they went off the road. Yeah. And she’s in her full wedding dress and Eric gets, gets her braid shirt all the way in back into town. Somebody else grabbed the mom and dad. They’re like 80-year-old people. I don’t remember where the groom was, but it was kind of, this is the joke amongst us that Aaron brought the ride home before the groom.

This is good stuff. Good stuff. This, anybody that knows Aaron hit him up. This is really good.

It was a true story and they, it took ’em a day or two to get there. I mean they went off the road sliding clay and like, alright. It’s terrible. You’re walking away from your truck. You’re not coming back for a day or two to get it off. Yeah. You know, it’s so sloppy. And they were on side by side, like you said, if it’s bad on one of those. Yeah. But you can still fight your way. Yeah. Round ’em. They’re not as heavy, you know, but you get a truck but balled up gumbo on it, you’re done. You’re making pottery.

Well that’s the thing. Those side by side tires can kind of clean out. Yeah. Easier, you know, than a truck tire. It’s just truck

Or a car. Tires, what you see out there most the time. Yeah. People go out there and stuff. They shouldn’t, A lot of oil pens been hit and rocks out there.

Yeah. Kinda like the 40 mile road. Yeah. Lots of oil strewn about. Yeah. Alright, well

Lots of hunting to be doing.

Yeah, there was lots coming. Well, you know, it was kind of a, I don’t know, less than average year in a lot of parts of the country, but then there was a couple of bright spots, places that don’t normally produce a lot of good bucks. Produced a couple of really good bucks. And here Utah’s general, couple great bucks. We’ve got a guy we’re gonna visit with here shortly. Anyway, this particular buck, this was sent, I, I saw a video of this from a really good friend of mine’s boy was hiking up there in gnarly, gnarly country. And then another friend of mine sent me this picture of this buck dead and it’s the buck. And I’m just like, what are the chances? I don’t even know if Buck’s killed in this unit. You guys do you know that’s your backyard, that’s stuff you

Yeah. You know, you know we’ve hunted quite a bit.

Yeah,

Yeah.

Yep.

You’re fond of it, right?

Sure. You don’t out there anymore. Let’s set the stage matter.

Set the stage right. Beaver

Deep and deep Beaver west. Is that what it was? Yeah. Yeah. Easy. Southwest desert.

Anyway, just something, anyway, it’s interesting, just kind of an interesting year that seems like the elk ruts a little bit slow. If big bulls are slow to come in, it just feels a little bit off. Doesn’t it? Feel a little

That way? Yeah, it does. And I don’t know what full moon’s not helping. Yeah. Full moon, Utah

Tree up.

What’s going on? It’s slow. It seems like it.

I mean there’s been a couple right. But usually, you know, 15,

It felt like more bulls died right off the bat than they have the last few days. Well, yeah, we’re knocking on the tip of September summer velvet slash you know, bachelor stuff. Summer

Patterns.

And then it feels like it’s been a dead two weeks. Yeah. Yep. It’s been feels like rough in Utah, which

Would be really,

And I’m hearing in other states too, Arizona, it hurts. Pretty, pretty quiet down there, which is find out, which obviously that opens up Friday.

Find out shortly

Somebody will. And New Mexico too.

It’s hard when a, when a state, you know, a state’s off to get excited about it. Right, bro. But at the same time,

Take a tag when they come.

Yeah. You take ’em when they come. Especially if it’s a random drop. Random.

Yeah.

So anyway. Well, let’s give Nick Booth a call. This is why a really good friend of yours.

Yeah. Met him down here in, in Cedars when I was gonna school. So

Yeah. Super good kid. Anyway. Just had absolute great luck and killed a stud buck. So anyway, let’s get the story from him.

Oh, I

Don’t know.

You think that was him?

Did you start the answer? I,

I clicked him off. Sounds like

I thought

That was 14 rings into it.

No.

Nick, Jason, Carter, Wyatt, everybody here. How are you?

Good. How are you guys doing?

Good.

We catch you at a good time.

Oh yeah. It’s always a good time to talk to you guys.

Better than working.

Oh, a lot better than working.

Might

Have to edit that out. We probably don’t want your boss to know that.

No.

Okay.

You gotta stop and clock out or are we good?

No, we’re good.

Oh, we were just talking about a little bit about your buck there. So we just wanted to congratulate you and talk, talk a little bit about the hunt and you know, leading up to it. Everything like that. We know you’re a pretty hardcore archer. Spent a lot of time on a lot of units in Utah, chasing bucks with a bow.

Yeah. I’ve kind of been all over the place chasing ’em, but yeah, I feel pretty fortunate this year.

Yeah. That’s an incredible buck. We’ll probably have a picture post with the podcast. These guys can see it. But kinda talk a little bit about leading up to the, the hunt a little bit. You said you were a little bit busier this year, so maybe didn’t get out and do as much scouting.

No, I, I spent maybe two days this year just looking for my truck. You know, we have,

It’s very frustrating. Yeah, that’s very

Frustrating. Makes the rest of us feel really bad the hours we’ve spent and didn’t turn up anything like your buck.

See and I think it’s a bad situation for myself too, because now my wife thinks that I don’t have to go scout all summer long.

Oh yeah.

Think

I could just keep working and it just happens now.

Yeah, well,

But no, yeah, it worked out. That’s, I’ve just been super busy this year with starting my own construction company and then having a little girl. So work was, work was bus busy and then family life was busy. But I too had, you know, at least an idea of the area. Just, I, I hunted it last year a little bit too, and seen some solid deer in there. So I figured that I’d just give it a go and see what happens. And I hiked in Friday night and I think it was the fifth or six buck I found was was him. I just, I knew that was the deer I was gonna chase, obviously. So.

Unbelievable.

Did you say, did you say you found him then or the night before? No, the Friday night knocking in. You’re like, bingo. All right, here we go.

Yeah, the night before just got super.

Do you think he, I, I mean, I don’t know. So anyway, how did he not get killed last year? But I think he probably blew up, you know. Yeah.

That would be my guess. You know, it’s, it’s hard to say. I, I took him to Jeff Baird bear down there in St. George and he thought he was an older, older buck, but whether he just, you know, blew up this year and nobody really knew about him or if he was good at hiding the previous years. Oh. But yeah, he was, he’s a really good deer.

Well, just from a little, what little I know about the, the locals up there that grew up hunting that mountain, them deer learned to try to hide pretty hard from some of those hunters that were there. Don’t you think? That country? Yeah.

And, and it does have some pretty, pretty remote kind of steep and deep country. Yeah. So yeah,

It’s, it’s not flatlander country that’s for sure. Termed cow’s face comes to

Mind. And you didn’t have it to yourself, it kind of sounded like

No, not at all. And you know, it was actually, I, I think he’s a fairly smart deer because opening morning he got missed three times by different people.

Oh, oh wow.

And then

We’re talking bow hunting that takes him Yeah. For, for one deer to get shot at that many times. But the rifle’s one thing, ’cause you’re just running in front of orange everywhere, but

Yeah. Yeah. Three, so three different shots. He meant he got eerie dodged opening morning and then after that he kind of went nocturnal. So we didn’t see him.

So did you, he didn’t see him Sunday. Did you watch him opening morning then? Did you see that all take place or where were you?

So he was actually beded like 300 yards down below me opening morning. But I couldn’t see him from where I was sitting. And a kid that had been watching him all summer, he snuck in, got a shot at him, missed him, and then we watched him blow up out of the canyon and bed across the side that I was glassing in. And it was only maybe an hour, hour and a half before dark. My buddy, he ran over there to try and get him and he ended up missing him twice right there on Saturday night.

Geez. And then Sunday we couldn’t find him. Monday I heard that they did see a glimpse of him, I think, but then nobody saw him again. Tuesday, Wednesday, I went back in Thursday, couldn’t find him Thursday and then Friday. So what are we almost a weekend of the hunt here. So Friday I set up on my glassy knob, couldn’t find him again. And I figured that he’d either left the basin or he’d kinda gone nocturnal. So I just, I would glass get up and move a hundred yards down the ridge, line glass and just, I did that for a couple hours and I ended up finding him bed at about nine o’clock. Wow. So I think that he just quit moving during the day. I think he was, he just went straight nocturnal on everybody.

But still in the same basin that you’d been hunting him in the whole time.

Yep. Still in the same basin.

Hmm. Geez. Crazy.

So did that day, did you get a chance to make a play on him?

Yeah, so, so I glassed him up about nine o’clock and I got an arrow in him about 1130. So, okay. So about two and a half hours. When I snuck into him, I was at 50 yards and he was beded, didn’t know I was there. And you know, you play the game, do you try and stand him up? Do you try and sneak in closer? You just wait for him to stand. What do you do? You know? So I decided that I was just gonna sit there all day and wait until he stood up. But about 15 minutes into sitting there, I had a bug fly down my throat and it made me cough.

Oh.

He jumped up. So I relate back and let, let one rip at him.

That sounds like Devon’s kinda a lot right there.

I couldn’t believe it. The

Only thing worse would be dealing with a hornet going down your throat.

Yeah, yeah. Luckily

It wasn Devon almost had that.

So you, yeah.

That wouldn’t be a good situation there. No.

So you started hacking and, and he stood up so you had to shoot

Yeah, that so that, that bug hit me right in the back of the throat when I knew I was gonna cough. I couldn’t not. So I was ready and I coughed and then he stood up and then I ended up shooting him.

Wow. That’s pretty cool.

So 50 yards just punched him or

50 yards. So when I shot, he kind of jumped and I hit him. I hit him hard and back. I knew it was a dead deadly shot, but I hit him further back than I would’ve liked. So I chased him down the mountain. I had him at 70 yards and he was just, I was waiting for him to come take another step out of a pine tree. And another hunter was actually on their way over to stock a different buck and they bumped him. So he went and taken off.

Does this sound like the country, you guys know? This

Is general season Utah?

Yeah, general Utah. Anybody

That’s looking to burn your points.

I can’t Utah believe this deer’s alive. I, you know. Yeah.

Yeah. And luckily those guys were super cool ’cause they ended up watching where my deer went and they helped get me back in on him. And then I ended up shooting him again at 20.

Didn’t you say everybody you met on the mountain was like the coolest dudes ever?

It was, it was the, the best experience I’ve had on the mountain with people. Well

That’s, that’s, that’s not easy to find.

Yeah. I came out on top on that one with the deer. But everybody was super friendly. In fact, I’ve been texting most of ’em all through the week to see if they’ve got on any of the other bucks that are up there.

Hmm.

Geez. Have they had any luck?

So one of the bucks we were, we were trying to get killed. He got killed by a different guy. Geez. And I don’t, I don’t think any of them have have punched their tags yet up there.

Okay. But, alright.

So these guys watched the butt, ran right into him, blew it, watched him go. So it gave you a shortcut. Say, Hey, we just, you know, watched him go over there. So you didn’t have to start tracking. You just went to where they last saw him, basically. Yeah.

Yep. Exactly. And that’s, I probably snuck in another hour and a half. And finally he, he stood up and I, I pin wheeled him at 20 and he, he kind of fell against the tree and then he death kicked and he cartwheeled down the mountain about another 750 yards. Oh,

In velvet? Yeah,

In velvet. Scratched up all his velvet, his right horn actually broke off his skull cap, but just stayed attached with his fur. But it was just hanging there loose.

That’s crazy. Dang.

What, what does that, what does, what’s a boon of Crockett score pul in this case happen? Do

With that? As long as you can piece him back together. Aren’t you good?

As long as it will fit perfectly back together. You just kind of have to

Well, even if, if

It’s at the skull, even if it’s at the base.

Yeah. That’s the thing. If it fits perfectly back together, I mean,

You’re good. Yeah.

So you just have to have it skull capped out or whatever and look at it and, and make a determination that way on

The inside spread or whatever. Okay. Well in this case, yeah. The, the hide grows right into the velvet at some points and it was held on Well

Yeah.

The things you learned from

The school that’s, I was just happy that the horn wasn’t completely shattered up. Rolling

Down that. Yeah. Sold.

Yeah. All the extra points and things that has there on a track. Nothing broke off. So

Yeah. Nothing broke that way. Got lucky.

Wow. Geez. That’s a story of I guess sticking to it. ’cause it’s Utah General is not on the deer like that. If other pe it’s not gonna be clean and easy. It’s just not,

You

Can

Have no interference in, in, you know, whether it be, you know, incidental or whatever, there’s issues.

Would you have like six other hunters up there to contend with or

Yeah, there’s about 10 guys up there hunting him.

Geez. Yeah. So the, the competition and it’s just crazy just to dig him up right there in kinda that same exact basin

And a week into it

That he called

Homedale. Everybody had chances. Yeah. You know what I

Mean? I mean, guys had been close, he’d been buggered and, and still be able to dig him up right there in that same basin. That’s what’s nice

About the velvet. They give you a few chances. Yeah,

Usually. Yep.

Yeah, exactly. And that’s, you know, from the, the glassing knob I had been sitting on most of the time, I couldn’t see where that deer was. So I think the only reason I found him was because I finally got up and just started moving to get different vantage points to look into the, that pine pocket that he was sitting in. But

Yeah, just turns off, turn him up. Beded like that, that takes dedication too. A lot of time behind the glass and picking, picking things apart.

Yeah. That there was a lot of time behind the glass on that one.

How far away was he when you originally glassed him up? I guess we should have asked that. I maybe you said, gosh,

I don’t, I don’t even know. It took me two and a half hours to get over there. So up the ridge line down the canyon, back up the other side of the canyon. So he was 1500 yards I guess. Wow. That’s good

Way. Good boss for better buck.

Yeah. Pretty

Awesome. Yeah. So your best buck, right? Your best buck.

Yeah, he’s, he’s definitely my best buck that’s, I’ve been waiting for w to go put a tape on him. But I had a, I had Jeff, I had Jeff tape him out at 2 0 7.

There you go. Well he looks 2 37. This, this deer has the look like in lines

Pitch for front

Heavy mass. I mean, it’s got a little bit of everything.

Yeah. Yeah. He’s,

He’s a sweet deer.

He’s really cool. How many points did he have on each side? Just, I mean, can’t point to the magazine yet because we don’t have a print. Usually we call people after we run a story in the mag, but what’s he got for,

We’re too excited. We That’s on Freshy.

Yeah. He,

He’s a six by eight with good eye guards too. Mm.

Yeah. Pretty awesome. We got some cool

Characters. Bunch of inlines, a little cheater off the one side

And making a shot with a bug in your gullet. Yeah. Yeah. It’s impressive man. That’s

Pretty

Awesome. I, I couldn’t believe it when that bug hits. You gotta be kidding. Yeah.

You know, it’s coming

Miserable

This. Yep.

Alright, cool. What’s next? Have you got anything, you got any other hunts this year or?

Yeah, I don’t have any other tags in my pocket this year actually. You know, I went and spent a little bit of time on the strip with my buddy helping him trying to find a deer and then just been looking around seeing, seeing what I can find for next year.

Yeah. Pretty awesome. Well, oh,

It’s super fun. Good

Stuff. So do you feel a little sad that you’re done for the year? I mean, you finished it off too early or you okay with everything?

Well,

It’s got a 2 0 7 1.

I’m okay. I’m okay with without wind. I wish I had another tag in my pocket, but we’ll see. Maybe I’ll pick something up. But

No, that’s, that’s an awesome buck. Congratulations.

I appreciate it.

Yeah. Congratulations man. That’s just awesome.

Yeah.

All right. Okay. Well, sounds good. Well we sure appreciate you spending some time with us and telling us the story. Personal. Of course. Personal story is awesome. So

Yeah. Appreciate you guys.

Yeah. All okay Nick.

Okay. Have a

Good one. Congrats. Thank you. You bet you. Yep. See you. Bye.

Yeah, you got the people hunting it, plus you probably got, you know, you got spike in cow hunters just incidentally on units. I mean it’s just, the world erupts on the first hunt of the year. The mountains come alive.

Pss good bulls like Yeah, it’s

Just, well, I mean, yeah, whether you got big bull hunters or spike in cow, I mean it’s just incidental people. Who knows We had had bear hunters, you know. Yeah, you probably do there bear hunters out too. Doing rigging dogs.

Yeah. You got bear hunters in there. Then just your basic hikers too. Just

Hikers. Yeah. Decorators. And then you get into labor day and then it’s, everything goes, you know? But anyway, it’s nice to know. Hey, nice to know you can find something the night before hunt and just change on a dime. Yeah.

There are some big deer on general units. Yeah.

Yeah. Can

Be

Unbelievable. Yep.

Yeah, that’s true.

Alright, well what else we got? We got some point deadlines coming up. Broon.

Yeah, I guess what, what have we got the end of September versus end of October? We’ve got

Bonus. So we’ve got Montana for bonus points. Yeah.

Bonus points there for the like deer, elk, anal mill sheep. And that if you didn’t put in sheep must go by the 30th. The preference point of, of course for the general goes till December 31st.

Yep. December 31.

Then we got what, Wyoming, I don’t know what is Oregon? The end of September too, that we don’t, we talk about Oregon, but you can do the points when you apply too. So it’s not like these others make you wait like they make you wait. But Wyoming deadlines what, 31st of October?

October next month. Yep.

So make sure you do that. Even if you applied for deer, elk, and antelope, they don’t give it to you. So hopefully you beat that like a dead horse for the last three, four years. ’cause it’s like, it’s like the craziest little hiccup.

Yeah. Change that they’ve had right there. You

Apply and you just, you’re trained. You get your point when you don’t draw, but it doesn’t happen. So

Devin, how about this fierce rifle we put together? Oh, this guy smashes last G grizzly and moose and

No, I, I don’t know.

Oh, that was a few. Yeah.

A what?

Yeah, that was a seven. Pear C got

A twisted rage. Yeah. We set it. Talked about on the podcast,

Talked about it. Cited it in

Five boxes of ammo.

Yeah. We sent him the data and Yeah, Wyatt talked to him.

Yeah. The guy ended up buying it. He had what, 10 days or so to get that rifle before a can. He, he bought, picked up a cancellation moose grizzly bear combo. Wow. Had like 10, 10 days or something. Devin got him that gun shipped out to him.

He’s like, you’re sure it’s on? Yeah, it’s on Devon’s. Like I,

There’s no way he shot it before he went hunting.

Think I think he made it to the range and did shoot it.

We forgot to

Camp

Or something. Right.

Eyed or left eye or lefthanded or, I mean, who knows?

It worked.

Did you ask, did you turn the tour at least back to zero before you mailed it to him? That’s

A good question. Couldn’t tell you.

Good question. We usually do. We we’re perfect. Devin we’re perfect.

Imagine you had it dialed to 700 d

JC smithing, I mean

16 M mo eight anyway.

Smashed, right?

Yeah.

Killed a grizzly bear and a moose with the, with the rifle. So, geez. Pretty

Awesome. Wasn’t he shooting like four inch groups at a thousand?

No, that, that’s a different guy. That,

That was, that’s the second gun really.

We set one up like a week and a half ago. Yeah. That was that

Guy. Shotgun gun. He just went to the shooting school with that gun and that’s where he learned Oh,

The one that’s okay. When you were gone and we Yeah. Yes. Ushered him out.

Different guy. Different

Guy. He never, we broke a lot of bread with him. Yeah. I didn’t know it was that one. He shot four inch groups. Four

Inch groups of a thousand said it was amazing. Yeah. Wow.

Yeah. He went to

The fair shooting school, right? Yes.

Yeah he did. Yep. Pretty awesome. That’s what he came out for to drive out. Picked up the gun. He comes up, grabbed the, the background check and got it. Here’s your gun. Drove there the next day.

Yeah, we had went to the course, we scoped it up for him and we got AIO ranges so he could, he could get that programmed and went out, dialed it, smashed it. His next thing is he needs to put a 20 MOE rail on. ’cause he wants, because he must

Go mile.

But when you’re shooting four inch groups of a thousand, I mean that’s the next step for the

Guy. You try 1200, 1300, 1400

Yard. How many yards is it minus

17 something.

16

Something.

It’s like 1760 something here. Let’s check.

I think the farthest like 1550.

Yeah, it’s like 440 in a quarter mile, you know, or something like that. 17. 1720 or 60. 1760.

Yeah. That’s a

Poke. That’s

A big difference. Yeah. Josh’s d

With ease hit

Josh sa hit the Sasquatch or whatever.

That’s

What he was talking about. Right. He wanted

Sasquatch. That Sasquatch, that’s, that’s his next,

That’s his next step. Step.

Yeah. I guess they have a CLA second class. Oh.

And they do that. Let’s come back and hit that and get a certificate.

Get you to a thousand in the first class and then that’s pretty

Awesome.

Yeah, no, he had a good time. So it was, it worked out for him. He was really happy. So he’s a good guy too. So we’re glad he, he’s ready to roll, that’s for sure. This fall. That’s right.

Well DJ’s Gunsmithing is no joke.

Well,

Let’s just,

If you guys wanna kill stuff, you probably ought to call us.

Yeah, we do have a rifle ready to go. Sitting in the closet. The safe that is

Actually

A shooting sucker. And it’s

Set up. You’ve done the same thing. You’ve already, we’ve done the same thing. Scoped it, what scopes it have, might as well say it. What’s it got on Caliber

Z five?

Yeah. What is it? Six. Six caliber. Six

Five. Five to 25. Six five. Prc. It’s amazing. Carbon rage. Carbon

Barrel. I actually was, anyway, I,

Anyway, thinking about

It. I will, I was gonna keep it. I was like, I’m gonna keep this gun. It is no joke, isn’t it though? It’s a shooting. I mean, it’s a shooting sucker that

Hey, you know, might need a gun for She’s got a tag or two this year.

I can’t even testify.

We can’t even, oh real. You gonna

Think about it for yourself. Well the thing is, you know how it shoots.

I was, because when you shoot ’em, when you shoot em, trust me, I know. This is the one thing about setting up guns for other people. Like, you don’t wanna give ’em up, you know what I mean? Like, you developed this bond. You know, Devin, you’ve developed a few bonds in your life. Are you, have you bonded with your truck? Which one? Yes. Just say yes. Both of them.

Yeah. One of them.

Which one? The

White

One.

The white

One. We’ve been through

Some stuff. I mean it had a, it had a clunky little like cper

Up front. Yes. It still

Does it. But then you found out that’s normal. Normal.

Yeah. But anyways, yes, you bond with rifles. Sometimes

You do, you bond with ’em and when they shoot and then you’re just like, man, I could just like take this one home ’cause it’s ready. You

Know what I mean? Well the thing is you have all the data printed. I mean photograph, you just shoot that you got, remember that? You have all of that? Yes. All of that already in your app. Yes.

Jason, even remember back in the days, I mean we’ve done it now. Some of these first, back in the day when we went and did with Mark Thompson. Yes. And we set up the gun. You don’t wanna take, well Mark said a gun like that. You want that

One?

That’s the one you want because

You just shot. Well ’cause that was the first time we ever shot a thousand. Oh. Ever. And so, so then you’re like, so then you’re like, this can

Happen. This is the most, this

Is mirror. I can’t do it with any other gun. No, I need that one, that one. And Mark’s like laughing. Like I’ve got a pallet of him. Yeah.

But, but it’s something you help, you do the load right there. You mount the scope, you know you do all that, that

Stuff you have invest you, you’ve invested mental energy. Yeah. Time. And then you’ve got this physical gun that you built yourself. He’s helped you build it

Out of a box. Yes. So it’s literally, has it been shot probably by anybody else but you. So it’s like, that’s the one

I want. When you take the fierce, I mean they’re, they’re, they’re new age, you know, they’ve got carbon options, steel options and then, and these new calibers, they’re fun.

We should call John Mogul right now and see if he’s still alive up there in bc. I saw he.

Do you think he’ll answer my call? Maybe.

No.

Did he

Take what? He’s tumble. He’s there for 15 days. We ought to prep. Prep the world with what he’s doing. I don’t know.

I highly doubt he answers. But does

If you duck him out, big Horn, didn’t

He take a tumble or something? Devin?

Buck off a horse.

It looked like he got bucked off a horse. Oh, maybe we’ll call him when he’s home. And here, let’s just see how, just

Hit

Him. Why not?

Let’s just see how it goes. I mean, it might get the raw story.

He’s probably maybe in a tent. Just bored, you know, wanting to talk to

Somebody. Well, if he has starlink, he might answer.

I bet he does. He’d have to. By

The way, that’s Star link’s. No joke. Not what

Starlink is. No joke.

Pretty handy to

Have.

I don’t know. It’s just really trying to find him up there. Whoa.

Gotta,

You’re going through satellites, man.

That’s going through Star right there.

He’s probably about to shoot around. He’s probably

Just spook.

Do you guys wanna hear his gunshot?

Probably. Jason never calls me. What’s this

About? What’s going on? We got a quality control issue going on. Right.

Ask him a technical question. Hey, what’s the, your call has been action

Screws. He’s over it. What’s the rate of

Twist in the 22? Two 50

While he’s on a cheap in Canada. Oh, we do need to have him on a podcast. ’cause he

Is, I be He’s got a story. Quite a story. Last picture I saw of him. He didn’t even look like himself. No.

So do you want to prep it? He looked like he got stung by about he can’t fire. He can’t fire now. Devin, you can tell the stories

About what? Well,

Whatever you wanna say. No, no, no.

That just, it looked,

How did he not look himself? He took

It on the chin. Oh, he had two black eyes and looked like a bee sting victim. Oh, he

Got thrown off a horse. He

Got No, I know. Or something.

Swelled up. Man, it’s looked pretty rough. I don’t know. I just saw his social media.

Who else killed a great bucks? His son Gage too. Yeah. This year on the archery hunt. So

He said it was two 200. 200 inches.

Yeah.

What’d he kill last year? Freaking monster Mass.

Was it two years ago? Two ago. Two years ago. Two ago. That

Was a two 30 Monster mass. Monster mass. Like that.

Did he call it like a moose buck or something? It

A moose buck. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe we ought try to get him called up. Yeah, ask

Him

A technical question. He could vouch for how his death’s feeling right now. Maybe

That’s Yeah.

Old gauger.

Hear his story about his book.

Oh, try him.

Might as well.

Let’s see.

There’s a handful of, of guys that have killed some good boxes this year. Holy crap. In line. I missed in

Lines.

Wow.

All right. Are we gonna randomly really call a guy and ask his personal lifestyle?

I mean, we deficit fears probably. I,

That’s what we do for real. Say, hey, I just need to know that. Foot pounds, inch pounds of an action screw. Or it’s just something question.

See, he doesn’t have your number

Will answer your call.

Actually, yours probably do it. It is office drive. I know, I

Saw that. Let’s, let’s dial it from yours. Shoot. Is that okay? Yeah. Yeah.

If we got the answer for sure. Right. Hook up there. I got one of the older iPhones. Oh my

Gosh. Oh yeah. That’s probably the wrong one.

Why? How is it that It’s a fucking Ford.

All that mine will work here. Call him on mine.

Mine’s probably a 14 too. Mine Don’t take all you guys’ new 16 plugs.

Here you go. It’s ringing. It’s

Ringing.

No, it wasn’t. I didn’t hit the button. Oh, you’re asking for some permissions there.

See if it works.

Facial recognition. Take over. Holy cow. Take over Devvin. There you

Go. Ask him something hard. Look, ask him a hard question. Hello.

What are you doing?

Oh, just plugged in in the order.

Nice selling guns. Hey, what’s the twist rate on a 22? Two 50 in a like the original Fury.

Oh, I think 12.

I’m just joking, dude,

You’re on, you’re on. You’re on the Epic Outdoors podcast and you probably ought to know these things. Hey man, aren’t you paid to know these things?

Yeah, I try to be. Oh

Geez. He’s ready to hang up on you, Devin,

Sorry. We should have gave you a for forewarning, but we tried your old man to see if he, if he was alive and then we got thinking about your buck and just wanted to Yeah, you’ve been on a killing spree.

Could just want like, get a story from you.

Yeah. Before we talk about your buck though, is your dad, is he alive?

Is you, I lost you there. My dad. What

Is he, before we talk about your buck, is your dad alive? Is he doing all right? We’ve, we’ve seen a few posts. Devin showed us he’s been through a beast. Ding patch and black eyes or I mean horse wrecks.

Horse wreck.

It’s like,

Yeah, I mean, to add more to the backstory, he’s having a, a rough go. They just got back to their camp last night and some other outfitter ransacked their camp, cut up their tent, cut their sleeping bags and stole their food.

Wow. He’s going through,

He’s going through the ringer up there.

Dang. Oh, I, I know embarrassed

That I asked. I’m impressed at how, how well, how much sticktuitiveness he has. Like he’s no joke. This

Might be He’s

There to stay.

Yeah, he’s earning it for sure. And but he might

Come, he might come back a little ticked off. You might, you might want take

A, you might have a different perspective on sheep hunting for sure.

Oh geez. Holy, how long’s he gonna stay?

He’s coming out on Friday, so he is got a couple more days. I

Wonder if Amazon there, you think Amazon would deliver sleeping bags up there in Canada where they’re at? Heck,

Jason, what?

Prime delivery. We got some

Kind of airdrop.

We just need some coordinates and

We’ll get you some sleek bags and a pup tent.

Get Elon z Elon on it. He’ll, he’ll do

Something. Maybe we’ll have to get that. Maybe we’ll have to let him

A drone drop.

Well, now I know why he didn’t answer my call, so I called him. We were gonna just talk to him, but I mean he’s in No, it’s

Raw. It’s

Pretty raw. Yeah.

He might be wrapped up in a tarp.

Yeah, I think he’s, he’s in a burrito counting. His blessing is up there for sure. Wow.

Geez, geez. Well let’s talk about something positive. How about this deer you killed?

Yeah, I just, I’m at a, a good start to the 20, 25 year for sure. But no, I’ll be, I’ll be straight with, it’s a deer that I had seen a couple years back, but he wasn’t anything like he was, I don’t know what you guys are seeing Horn grove, but for what I’ve seen this year, it’s better than I thought for having a dry winter.

We just haven’t, we’re hunting more desert stuff,

So we’re just further south than you, but Oh yeah. And I’m assuming you’re hunting up, you know, somewhat closer to where you live than where we live down here. But we’re not necessarily seeing that down here. You know, the, we had some spring storms, but it was, I felt like too little, too late. But

Yeah.

But anyway, I

Could, I could see that. But yeah, no, I, I got lucky. I mean, with a bow, I think there’s a lot more luck to it than skill to be honest. But So was

Buck watched all summer chasing or scouted or

Yeah. Yeah. It was a deer that I ended up finding late, late in scouting, but stayed on him and he actually pulled the slip on me. His big deer do, I couldn’t find him for about two weeks and we were in there chasing some other deer with my wife. She’s got a tag as well. So we were just kind of sticking to it and trying some other deer. And he, he happened to come outta nowhere and was able to get on him once before I got a shot at him in the rain and just didn’t, didn’t quite come together. It got in there and it was raining sideways and I thought it would be be good to pull a stock while it was, had some stuff covering up my, my wind and, and sound. So I tried to get in there and it just didn’t pan out, but the deer didn’t get boogered or anything.

So I went back in there the next day, didn’t find him that morning, but was able to turn him back up that night and got in there and found him about six o’clock in his bed and tried moving in on him a couple different times, but I just couldn’t get a, a shot ’cause it was, he was in some thick stuff and got to about 30 yards to one time I tried closing in and just realized I was way too close so I had to back out and was just gonna sit there till dark for when he got up to feed that night and was in there and it, it took a lot longer and I thought it was gonna take, he didn’t stand up till like right at 8 0 5. So I was fighting the clock with lighting and stuff, with the, trying to get a shot, seeing your pins and everything.

And he, he stood up and I could just see his horns and I kind of ranged a couple places where I thought he was gonna come out at and arranged a little gap that was 50 yards out. And as soon as I was putting my rangefinder back in the pouch, I looked up and he’d already walked through that gap. So Uhoh wheel wheel started turning, I’m like, uhoh missed that one and arranged a few more spots that I thought he might come out lower. And he ended up stepping out on the lower bench that I’d arranged at 72 yards. And he came out and gave me a, gave me a good shot and let her rip and luck could have it. The, the arrow found its mark and he didn’t go more than 20 yards. So I honestly didn’t know where I quite hit him ’cause it was right at dark and had those luminox on my arrow.

So I watched it, watched it go in him, and it was still in him as he took off. So I knew I had got one in him and I had one of my buddies up on the hill with my wife’s spot and then they like, ah, he went 40 yards and I can’t see it move. Like the light’s still shining, I can’t see it moving. So I kind of backed out wondering where I hit and we gave him about an hour or a little over an hour and went in there to see what we could find for blood and walked down to first blood and it was looking really good, looking real good. So I found blood and walked about 20 yards and it started spraying pretty good. And my buddy walked out in front of me, buddy Mike, his, what his name is, walked around the bush in front of me and I was like, you got blood on that side? And he says, no need, there’s a dead deer right here. So

It’s

Always, he made it about 25 yards from where I hit him.

Wow.

Didn’t go 25,

It didn’t go 20.

So that’s awesome. It’s a pretty buck man. Can’t be super pretty.

Yeah. Like I, I, for me that’s always kind of been a dream is something with some matching inlines is what I’ve pictured to be

Sure enough that’s what he’s

Got. Or like a dream deer, a super freak mass, two 30 buck. Yeah. So you’re on a pretty good streak.

Yeah, yeah. No, I’ve, I’ve been blessed and had some good luck on, on the general stuff here in Utah, so I can’t, I can’t complain there.

Well maybe we should talk about a little bit about your bad luck too. Let’s talk about your first trip up the mountain this year.

Yeah, I’ve, I’ve had some bad luck. That’s what I’ve told myself all year is I feel like the mountain owes me one and it, it gave me one back with that deer. But BLGI did. I was pulling up for early summer scouting and just trying to get away from work and all the BS going on in the world and got about three quarters of the way up the canyon and I had a check air filter light kick on on my truck at one of our company trucks here. And I got out and kind of didn’t think much of it and as soon as I popped the hood, flames came ripping out from under it. And whoa, long story short, the the truck trailer and everything inside it went down. I lost lots of, a lot of gear, a lot of high-end hunting equipment that really hurt. But luckily that stuff that you hate to pay for month to month insurance actually came through and, and helped me out. So that was a big saving grace.

I lose track of what’s in my trucks. Like just,

Could you imagine? Yeah. No. What trailer, what kind of trailer was it? It again, second back. Was it like a camper or what was it a to?

Yeah. Yeah, it was full on camp trailer.

Dang. And how, how long did it take from the time it started up when you first noticed flames to the time it was all gone?

Yeah, from the time I got out and cracked the hood and knew it was on fire, I bet from the time the truck was burned and trailer was going down, what, there hadn’t have been more than 20 minutes at top. So I went from the, the front of the truck to sheer panic and just grabbing as much out of the, the backseat of the truck as I could. And that didn’t last long before the cab had started feeling the smoke. So I jumped out and went to the trailer thinking I could find a fire extinguisher. And by that time I looked out and the whole truck was on fire, windows were blowing out and I

Was, then it’s got a tank of gas in there somewhere. You know,

There was Yep. I, the gas tanks in the back of the truck and then the propane tanks on the front of the trailer side.

What did the propane tanks

Too? I need back

Ups. Were they interesting?

Did they go or Yeah.

What did they sound like? It wasn’t, yeah, it wasn’t a big boom, but it just, luckily I think they have those seals on the front, so for that thing it just leaks. But it threw a big flame. It threw a big flame.

Well then you’re probably trying to avoid like lighting everything around you on fire. I’d imagine.

Who

Cares? Yeah,

That’s who cares. Let a bird. What about the toy tank? Did you, is it one of those toy haulers that have a toy tank full of fuel too?

No, it was just a regular standard regular stand trailer. Yeah.

Geez

Trailer. But it, it sucked. We lost bows, spotting scope, vinyls. I mean it. What

Kind of friend asked you that on a podcast? Exactly

Why

We didn’t even warn you about,

I mean, wow,

It’s an interesting story. It’s, he’s just

Started, he’s just started to heal up after killing a big buck and he ripped the scab completely off. Well he killed

A big buck so it cancels it out.

I mean, I don’t know. Oh yeah. I mean it can cover some of it up, but that’s

A what do they figure, like how, what was it just

From what they’d kind of talked and looking at how it started and how quick it went. They’re thinking there was some kind of electrical fire in the engine that caught the

Gas. Did you install

The gas, the gas line? Did

You, wow. Did you install your own light bar?

I, I wish I had some good excuse, but I couldn’t tell you what happened.

Wow.

You never know. Gasser

Gasser or was it the gas truck or diesel?

Diesel? That was the other crazy thing. It wasn’t wow. It wasn’t heavy or pulling hot or nothing. So it was just

Diesel’s just fluke down

Was bad luck. Yeah.

That’s

Bad luck. Well gage, thanks for answering next time. Geez. Yeah,

We

Forewarn you but

He’ll never answer.

Let’s start a rumors, fear’s gonna start making bows or

Geez, you never know what goes on

This. I thought thought guys that work for fierce can’t hunt with anything but a rifle. I didn’t know you guys could hunt with bows.

Yeah. That

Yeah. We, we, we tend to dabble for

Take ’em how you can get ’em.

Alright. Exactly.

Well hope your dad gets home safe and we’ll get maybe talk with him. Well maybe, maybe he, he gets the bottom of the night.

You’re don’t wanna get that stick. Yeah, you’re gonna want to get that story. We want to get home. I

Think it’ll, I don’t know. We’re not gonna be a good laugh. We’re not gonna be like, we’re gonna give him some time to heal up fully.

This has been since like week. This the 4th of July.

So it’s been been a while. That’s six weeks. Wyatt month, two months maybe. Yeah.

Ho Gage. Hopefully he can get one killed and round it out.

You know Wyatt, well enough, maybe you got something on him, let us know and we’ll bring it up.

You got our number? Yeah.

We’ll we’ll schedule that one for another time. We

Can, we’ll

Jump up a good one.

We’ll make sure Wyatt’s out of town and, and he is gone long enough that he can’t hear the edits and we just gotta go to, we just gotta let her roll. Logan, just go with it.

He’s got Starling now though. He can’t escape it. Oh yeah. He ain’t hiding nothing. Yeah.

Well congrats on an awesome buck gage. Yeah, thanks for answering them provoked. And we know you probably won’t ever do it again, but we got you once. So thanks a lot.

You’re all good. You guys have a good one and good luck to you guys this year.

Remember buddy, this was Devin’s idea. Alright, you’re all good. Alright,

Bye. See ya.

I don’t dunno if it was yours or why It’s probably both of you pretty awesome.

Geez, I I mean I’m, I’m thinking about like, I, I, I don’t outfit Canada. Are they boarding like right on a crest? ’cause they usually have concession turf. Like not, you’re not working the same area. They don’t

Know the Rockies. ’cause sometimes you can share permits, you know what I

Mean? Yeah. I don’t know what’s going on. Would

You do if you locked up on somebody slash your tent

Slash food stove

Slashing your tent? That’s,

Well

They’re basically put, I mean, you get a snowstorm this

Time. Isn’t your domicile? Isn’t that your domicile? And can’t you protect yourself?

Yeah. If you’re camped out in Texas, that’s your

Dwelling stand your ground steep.

Yeah.

Well I’m just thinking I, I don’t know, said whether he caught ’em in the act or they’d just done it and they found their camp. They came back and found it that way. But I mean still that could be honestly life and death in a situation that’s in, in the Canadian Rockies this time of year you get dumped at a foot or 18 inches of snow or, and you’d have no whatever

Wild times in Canada. Poor

Guy. We’re sitting here calling him.

I, yeah, I feel bad.

We can blame it on me. Just

Blame it on me.

Okay, good. We will Guy’s got black eyes and no sleeping bag.

He’s got, he’s gonna have black finger and toenails with no sleep. S

Frostbite. Are

You sticking it out though man? I bet he’s, he’s, he

He had to be there for

It’s hardcore anyway.

Well I hope it ends well. But anyway.

Alright, well let’s talk about Logan’s stealth cam. Maybe like even though we’ve got Oh yeah. Dates that we can and can’t run trail cameras that they definitely provide us with enough information to get going. Yeah. You guys are hunting elk and deer off of Yeah. Stealth cam info.

We’ve been busy and yeah, we, we kept the doors open at stealth cam this year. Probably just ourselves. Yeah. So yeah. Yeah, it was awesome. We, we experimented with some new cameras this year. Those gmax visions were phenomenal. I I, I was kind of skeptical at first because I didn’t understand if how good that little screen would be or if it’d even be useful. But it’s way better from setting it up. It’s way faster to set up. ’cause you can actually see what you’re doing and then lining up the shot so you can take a picture and then go look at it on a little screen. It’s awesome.

This is really important stuff for your generation because if you guys ever hunted without the use of trail cameras,

Onyx trail cameras, I don’t know how I’d do it without ’em. Because you

Never had,

And now starting when

You were born basically, or when you started hunting, you were able to use those.

I don’t know that I’ve ever hunted. I had a, I had a Garmin rhino. Oh yeah. My first two years of hunting, we all had those with the Onyx card in it or whatever it was. And then

Montana Mount Hunting had a chip. Yeah.

Yep.

Before it was even called Onyx. Yep.

And then switched to Onyx on the phone a couple years later. So Yeah,

So

Far I got one of those. Those heard are worth a lot of money. Jason.

The rhinos

Worth that chip in it. Do

You want to buy it from me? I got one. I’ve got one too.

I got a lot of waypoint. Aaron’s told me you can get all those into Onyx somehow. I just need to do it. You need to do it. That rhino,

The onyx,

It has a lot of points, has a lot of water pots from me and you, me and your era. Those are wandering in the desert

Memories that are stressful at times.

Yeah. But we live through it.

Pot’s dry. Let’s go to the next one. That one’s dry. So let’s go to the next one. Remember there was a swimming hole. Oh yeah. That was dry. Yeah, that was bad.

That was, that was mid-June. And you don’t go into the desert mid-June. It’s 105. Did because we were doing bid, we’re just whatever we were 30 something. Oh,

28.

Yeah. Logan’s age or Cashs, I don’t know, somewhere

In there, but meaner and tougher.

Ah, I don’t know.

Then cash.

Yes. Then Logan. Absolutely.

You’ve got a ways to

Go. I’ve seen Logan’s, I’ve seen Logan’s weaknesses.

You guys have, you’ve spent some time in one of these pup times. Yeah,

We did.

That’s true. I can’t, I have nothing on cash to argue back with this because he kept me alive for a weekend. So Yes I

Did. Billy, did you guys spoon?

No, no. No

Body heat.

What? Not that cold.

When

The 10 cut went down that

Truck, Logan. Logan had a minus 40 sleeping bag.

I did. I didn’t know

Minus how much

Does that weigh? Cash would, I

Didn’t even know eight

Pounds. All I was

Six pounds. All I know is when he threw it in the back of my truck, I thought it was a full bed roll and it was just his sleeping bag.

It

Was, you thought it was mattress?

I thought it was a mattress pad, A pillow canvas going to the

Rockies.

I’m going to Colorado in November. And my dad, I asked my dad, I said, what do you got for a warm sleeping bag? He said, here, take this and you hands me this big old holy, it was a big sleeping bag, but I was not cold. You’ve had two. I slept in gym shorts that whole time. You’ve

Had an extra pair of gloves this whole time.

Kill you Lloyd. Thanks Lloyd.

Oh my.

I love the inside banner.

Josh, if we got anything going on optics wise, what do we got going on in the world? We did it. We addressed our swirl, addressed our

Store. Yeah.

Yep. Yeah, just go log in and check out. Check out the pricing there. It’s easy. All you need is an email and a password. So

Yeah, so if you go there and it doesn’t look quite the same as when you logged in last time to see it, don’t let that ruffle. You just, just go redo it, right? Yeah. Go re go. Re-log in. Usually the email you probably already used and redo. It’s just a new, I don’t know, I don’t wanna use the wrong term. Login. A new

New look. Interface.

Login. Yeah. Same, same store. Almost new login. Couple of updates on the inside, but yeah, just gotta get you in there with you with the email and a password.

So with the, when you see pricing, it’s the reduced pricing, don’t

Worry’s

Epic.

Epic price. You log when you’re logged in, it’s, you’re only gonna see one. Yep.

One price. Yep.

SS dd, same store, different day. Yeah,

Same store,

Different day.

Low price, different day. I, I don’t know, same look, different. Look, whatever

We’ve been, we’ve been selling a pile. It’s been, it’s been a busy couple days, weeks, I guess last week and

This week. Well, what have you been selling the most of lately?

A bunch of swirl stuff. A lot of guys, a lot of guys were on the fence and have been on the fence for a long, long time. And there was a, a increase, a slight increase on swirl stuff last week. And so a lot of guys bought that and been selling a lot of like the sig stabilized vinyls. We was actually sold quite a few of those. They’re pretty cool. So Yeah. And it’s piles in piles of tripods.

We’ve got gals buying sick.

Yeah. Yeah.

You know, neither the arrange finding vinyl now.

Yeah. We’ve been selling piles, piles of tripods as well yesterday. A lot of good feedback about our tripods and Yeah. People are loving them, so. Yeah. And you and you need more than one, so. Yeah. Yeah. You need, you need a couple, especially when you start getting kids and stuff and anyway. And a bunch of optics and you got a bunch of different stuff, so yeah. It’s been, it’s been good. But the one thing I do see this time of year, guys wait, and it’s kind of, it’s frustrating to me as well just because I want, I want to get a guy something and get it to him on time and, and once it leaves here, we’re at the mercy of whatever shipping Yeah. Agency where they, we send it out to. So that does get tough. So don’t, I guess my thing is don’t wait. I think

There’s a lot of guys that call have been calling on Monday this year and they need it by Friday. Yes.

It feels like

A lot. Or I need it Tuesday. Yeah. And with Amazon Prime, Amazon get to me overnight. Yeah,

Well their own drivers and everything

Too. Well USPS caters to them. Yeah. Mean they’re working on Sunday. Yeah, exactly. Oh yeah. For Amazon.

Next thing you know, you got your buddies, uncles, wifes cousins showing up to grab it for you. Yeah. But we’re not Amazon, so they don a couple of Amazon

Drivers.

Yeah. They don’t cater to us. They only cater to Amazon because you see, I mean, you see some struggles, you see some, sometimes some weird packages and stuff or something will happen and just don’t wait. Like if, if you know you have a hunt coming up and you need new vinyls, just get ’em now. It’s not gonna do any different, you’re not gonna be in any more or less trouble with your wife if you buy ’em this week as compared to next.

I just get the fight over with.

Yeah, just, just

Do it. Drop more time to heal up things.

Yeah. Just do it and get ’em now so we can make sure we get ’em to you because if not, you never know. You never know with your stuff.

Yep. Good point. All right. All right. Also, we’ve been wearing QQ clothing like crazy using their gear, man, it’s been hot up until this week, bro. And you were talking about the weather now we’re gonna now change up Cool. Change up and maybe even layer up a little bit or at least have options

For sure. Yeah, it’s been a long hot summer. Last two weeks have been completely different here in the southwest. At least parts of Arizona, but southern Utah a lot, lot cooler, a lot more seasonal I guess. It’s nice. I mean we’re in the seventies or low eighties throughout most of southern Utah, which you can totally live with midday versus Oh, it was, it was low eighties on the opener of the out con at 10,000 feet. It was, it was rough cash. You probably know what I’m talking about. It was a rough, it was a rough weekend. Yeah, it was. It was a, a lot of people got a lot, a lot of people got wet and cold and Yeah. But it was a good storm.

We spent a lot of time out in Nevada and it was nasty, but then know rain, kind of some crazy monsoon. Put the

Fly on Logan, just

Put it

On, just sleep with the

Rain, fly on, but then hot and dusty and miserable.

Yeah. Yeah. So anyway, they make great stuff. I pretty much lived in my hela and then there’s always that first morning you’ve been living in that Hela, you know, q you stuff, you know, and then all of a sudden you’re like freezing to death. Yeah. Because you feel the first 38 degree morning and you’re like, oh, Tron pants tron. They’re my, he top,

They’re my freaking pants.

Tron pants and a hela top. And you, you know, you wear it all summer and then all of a sudden you’re like, I, I don’t need to wear this anymore. You know? Got a lot of breathability, pretty

Awesome base layers, insulation, outerwear packs, sleep systems, footwear accessories, lifetime warranty on all their gear. Anyway, check ’em out at q You. It’s awesome.

I had to use that lifetime warranty once and it was awesome to work with them. Was it? So if you ever have an issue. Absolutely. There you

Go. I haven’t had to use their,

Yeah, I had to. It was, it was a, a stitch that got sewn wrong. Oh. And dude, they were so quick and nice to work with and everything. It was awesome. Awesome. Seamless.

All right, well good luck to everybody out there in the, in the whole hunting world, whatever you end up doing. Elk. Most likely elk and antelope. I guess there’s a antelope punts going like crazy elk. Yeah. Well

You’re the only, well, you got another one coming up. Don’t. Yeah, I mean, should we smash, should we just real quick, 30, 30,000 foot level. Say where we’re all gonna be in the next three weeks, two, three weeks. It might be fun. Uhuh. Just state. Just the state

You go.

Utah and Arizona.

Really? You’re gonna go to Arizona? Yep. You gonna get in the truck? Absolutely. You gonna start it?

It’s already loaded with gas and goodies. Already got it loaded. I was down there last time. 15 minutes. So yeah. Well I guess there’s my, you know what you should do agenda. Do the exact I I actually am gonna, if I Oh yeah, I’m gonna might go to the same just

For nostalgic. I mean nostalgic. Why not

Say what if, what if, what if I’m prepared to go down for 10 days and just come back and say why did I go down? But it’ll be good. Hey, it only takes one bull. End it, dude.

Three and a quarter. Dump it a lot.

A lot can happen. A lot can happen in an hour.

Got sheep, deer, elk. Yeah. All right. Utah. Utah, Arizona. That’s where I’m gonna be. I don’t, how about you guys?

Utah, Wyoming, Nevada. Yeah.

Lots those, lots of different things in Utah.

Why are you

The builds being quiet. Quiet You?

Where you gonna be in the next 30

Days? Two weeks. What next two weeks. Wyoming. Okay. Wyoming. You got Utah. No you don’t. I don’t think you got a general this year, did you? So No, nothing. Nothing in Utah.

Pollock, you got a lot going on.

Utah will be a busy, a lot of Utah between for the next month species we’ll have stuff. Yeah, yeah. Deer, elk.

You guys will probably get a turn back. Archery tag in Colorado, so I mean, that’ll be good.

Devin. Devin, there you go. Looking at me. Yeah,

You’ve been thinking about things

I have. You’re going, you’re also land of Enchantment. I have no comment. Land of Enchantment plus Utah. I was raised in a barn. I mean,

Anyway, lots of fun. Gosh, you’re going to New Mexico, right? Yeah, it’ll be awesome. Come back, do

Cash. Where are you gonna do

Stab and grab

Most of Utah here in the next Utah. Couple, two, three weeks. Yeah. Then different spaces. Idaho, I guess maybe Utah. Logan? Yep.

I’m bouncing back and forth between Utah and Nevada all this month.

Yeah, I mean there’s a lot, a lot going on there in the next two weeks. A lot
