In this episode, Cache Lynn and Logan Marshall share their stories from hunting Colorado’s 2nd rifle season for Mule deer. Cache was able to harvest a great buck after hunting a few days on his own and Logan (hunting with his dad Paul) was able to stick it out a bit longer and wait for a buck he was happy with. We also give away three world class hunts and talk with a few of the winners. Check our Instagram @epic_hunts for more details about the “Father of the Year Giveaway”.

You are listening to the Epic Outdoors Podcast, brought to you by Fierce Firearms, epic Outdoors choice for custom hunting rifles.

Hey everybody. Jason Carter, Adam, John, Adam,

Howdy,

Bronson, John Peterson, Cashel. Lynn, it’s not Cashel, right? People call you Cashel.

The girls in the office do

They do so? I do every once in a while. I don’t know

Why I do once in a while too. Just to beat you down on money.

Cash money. Money. You gotta do it.

Someone’s gotta cash money.

Loie bear.

Hey,

How you doing? You’ve been hunting a

Lot. I’m good. I’m glad to be back in society. It’s nice. We’re glad to back. Oh,

You’ve been back for weeks.

Watching those paychecks go out and wondering when you’re working’s getting old. So

Yeah, I haven’t, I haven’t been working. That’s,

That’s,

I won’t even try to hide that.

Oh, you do a heck of a job. Even when you’re o off in the wilderness.

I was teasing, teasing these two 20 year olds yesterday that they’re the only ones in the office on a diet.

You guys on a diet. Both of them. Seems like Adam mentioned something like a meat diet. What are you on the

Decker diet?

What’s this? Eating chocolate. Yeah.

Once in a while. Every now and again,

We used to have, I used to have a cheat. I have a salad Sunday kind of a thing where we have chocolate or sugar on Sunday. But what do you do? You just cheat whenever you just

Whenever I want.

Okay. Yesterday he was disciplined. Today he is. Maybe not. So

What, are you on a meat diet too? No. What

I simply, I simply had a salad for lunch and I got accused outta

The register. So you, you’re watching your

Calories. But he had no pizza, no pasta, nothing. He had a salad and a bread. Steak salad.

And a

Are you trying to avoid the dad bod? Did you decide, I mean, are you announcing something and you decided you don’t want a dad bod and all of a sudden you’re No,

No, no announcements. No. I just, I’m down some weight and I want to keep it off a little bit.

I like it.

Logan what? Logan what are you doing? What’s your excuse?

I’m on carnivore right now. I

Know why I

Tried everything. Why? He went five days without eating. Was it five days?

Yeah. He ate cayenne pepper and Sprite. Yeah, that

Was terrible. I may never do that again. The, the smell of cayenne pepper to this day still makes me nauseous.

I’m over it.

Logan, why are you on carnivore?

I do it every, I’ve done it for the past three years after I get done with hunting season.

Why? That’s when you’re, I don’t know, probably be the leanest.

Well, the truck eating a lot of

Truck food. Yeah, I was, we trucked it this year a lot. And so, okay.

I was say

It wasn’t a good year after

My hunting season. I feel like I can do anything I want for about 30 days. Yeah.

We should update the listeners on your truck saga. We talked to him about, we talked to him about the transmission. Yeah. And all.

Oh yeah. No, he’s lucky

To have a truck.

A lot of truck things happen. I think we’ll get into that later. A lot of truck things happen the past two weeks. But

Fast forward, the transmission’s not slipping.

Yes. No, the transmission, they did the service. They said that my transmission fluid was the blackest. They’ve ever seen it. They did. And my filter was almost entirely clogged. I don’t know how that works now. It’s just degradation, so it’s fine. But they said no metal shavings, no metal shear in the pan when they opened it up. Wow. Which is really good. And he’s like, I tried really hard to get it to skip on the freeway after we did it. And he’s like, it won’t skip. And I told a side by side all the way to call Colorado and it told like a champ.

So you’ve got a new lease on life right

Now?

I’m getting, well, let tell you about our, let me tell you about my new lease on that Tacoma from Bronson.

I don’t want to get started on trucks right

Now. Well ju well we can A problem. Justin’s truck. So I took a Tacoma. Same guys. They’re awesome actually. But anyway, I had some gearbox fluid, you know, basically hitting the driveway and not evaporating, you know, and it’s got that viscosity and you’re like, oh. So I get under there, I’m like, oh geez. So anyway, and then the power steering, I’m like, oh, I’m gonna look at that. It’s full of metal in the power steering fluid, you know. So anyway, take it down there. Adam. You were, you laugh in your guts out. Well you just like think it’s gonna this simple fix. No, the rack companion’s coming apart. By the way, you need new tie rods. Both, by the way, you’ve got a, a gearbox leak by the way. You need a new CV axle. We didn’t need the axle. It was just tearing apart. Instead of doing the boot, you usually do the axle. Your

Radiator was

Leaking and the radiator fluid was leaking and then they’re going to put it all back together. And he’s like, dude, your brakes are gone. It was like, really? And this is on a little, the Tacoma for Justin. It’s, it’s

Been sitting in the driveway.

It’s been sitting a bit for all intents and purposes, put a new motor in it. You know the body’s over 300,000 miles. But you’re like, well if I, of course you’re gonna put a new motor in. Like you can’t go buy a truck. That’s the taxes on a truck. You know what I’m saying? But then 14 repairs after that. And then another 14 that I don’t know about that are gonna come up here in the next few months. At some point you are throwing good money after bad. No.

And that, are you ready to sell it now?

Do you? I know you wanted to buy it. Really? No. You wanted to buy the ZR two? I thought

Well yes, I want a small, I want either

A small truck too. Yeah,

How much? I’ll tell you what, you make me an offer. That thing is tight right

Now on that four runner or is it a Tacoma?

Tacoma and it’s got a camper show.

Yeah, I’ll think about it. I’m very interested. Yeah.

Garnishes weight.

Do I have to take Franklin’s or Benies? What do you got?

I mean,

Work it out. Remember that paycheck you said goes outta

Weight? You were just, were just talking about that. I do really good work.

Garnish your wages.

A lot of bosses give out bonuses. Oh my.

Quite personal vehicle deal’s off. I like it.

I’ll be talking to you.

It’s a brand new truck right now. Anyway, interesting stuff. Kind of fun. But

What you need to do is you need to put, list that thing and then tell him it’s listed that get, that’ll get him.

Ask him how much he offered me for it. 15 Uhuh. Yeah. Dang. You better come with some benies guys. Whoa. I don’t know if I can, I’m just teasing. I’m not teasing. He actually, but that was sight unseen. Didn’t know what it was. You know.

And before he listened to this podcast, call him back before I

Hit publish.

But hey, all that stuff got done. Yeah. Now done it’s mirror.

Couldn’t be better. Ashley’s driving it right now. Working your clutch over. She’s actually a really good driver. Alright, Bronson, John, we did this fall bonus hunt giveaway. Just kind of something as an afterthought. Like, hey, let’s give away like three hunts this fall, right? Yeah. And Adam come up with the Yukon doll sheep up there with North, north Curl Outfitters. And then we did a Nevada 2 31 milder hunt. And that includes the tag. And then two Utah antelope tags. Not guided just for the tags. Pretty awesome. Gave, or the ending date was November 3rd and we gave ’em away. Today was, so now it was fun. Here

We are. It was fun. Yeah,

Really fun. Here we are gonna give these guys a call. So who should we call first? Let’s do

It. Whatever. Who are you gonna call?

Let’s call the A wolf guys. That’s my favorite species.

You did put your hands on a couple. You done a couple

This year. Hey, Sean says he’s killed enough antelope for a lifetime. He killed two of them. It’s done. I think he’s killed enough for two lifetimes. You only need one.

Just need one big

One. Need one. But they are good. I actually had sausages and I mean, Jean and Janis eat. And we had to call her and ask her about it. I mean,

Wow. Really?

She’s not a fan usually. All right. So anyway, let’s give Russell Shields a call outta Kentucky. He won the antelope punt. Of course you guys know this ’cause we just barely got done drawing their names. Let’s tell him what he’s got.

Your call has been forwarded to an automatic

All right.

All for

One. Okay, here we go. Let’s give, let’s give the Nevada Mulder Onaway. Justin Green from Idaho won it. Let’s give him a holler. It’d be a pretty good day for him.

Yeah. I still be hunting in Idaho this time of year. Who knows? I dunno.

Hello, it’s Justin,

Justin, Jason Carter, and the crew here. How are ya?

Good. How you doing bud? Good.

What’s going on? You? This is Adam. You hunting still up there or are you working back to work?

Well, I’m trying to sneak outta work when I can, you know, play a little hooky. Got

A little, you still got a few tags to kill or fill up there?

Yeah. Yeah. Just kind of getting into, you know, white tail time, tail getting good. We got a little bit of mule deer that we can do here for a few more days over a general tag, you know, so, yeah.

That’s awesome. Well, we were just, you know, we had this bonus hunt giveaway coming up. Deadline was November 3rd. I don’t know if you remember, remember that the last 30 days we’ve been working on that. And anyway, hey,

Hey, hey. You’re getting my heart rate up. What do you saying?

Well, well I, we just, there was a check that bounced and we just wanna make No, no, just teasing. Yeah, you, you

Speaking the

Mul there. Do you remember, I mean, do you remember, you know what, what bins you put your tickets in by chance?

I believe I had some in the milder bin. Probably the sheep bin.

Yeah,

I think that was about it. Yeah.

You, you’re the lucky winner of the Nevada Mulder Mule Hunt Unit. 2 31 comes with the landowner tag. Woo.

How about that

You guys? I never win anything. I’m actually excited. I’ve put in for years and years. There

You

Go. You win today. Yep.

Pretty awesome. Land owner

Tag, fully guided hunt, white rock outfitters. Choose your season and

Yeah, choose your season. You get seven days, but then of course you can hunt all three seasons. You can hunt, archery, muzzle, rifle, they’re back to back to back. I mean, literally you can hunt for, what, three months? All three months? Two and a half months. I mean, so anyway, you can come and go as you please. Obviously it’s, you got seven guided days, and then after that as much as you want, it includes that landowner tag, landowner tag in and of itself’s price.

15 plus, yeah, 15 k

Plus. Hard to get your hands on ’em. Yeah.

So,

Yeah. Oh man, I, I’ve been looking to get a good meal, deer on the wall and I’ve, you know, I went to Colorado, you know, with you guys helping me and, and you know, just, yeah, it’s, it’s high on the list and that’s when I’ve been wanting to get on, so I’m really, really excited.

Pretty awesome. Well,

It’s, it’s kind of weird making these calls during this year’s hunting season and have to wait, you know, next year, nine, 10 months or whatever to next year. But you gotta, you got a good hunt to work around already for 2026, so congrats Justin. Yeah,

Absolutely. Thank you guys. I, I can’t be happier. I mean, my gears are turning already. I’m gonna have to talk to you guys and the outfitter and figure out, you know, where to, where to land. My, you know, I got all disciplines that I do, so I gotta figure out when, when to go with them. So.

Yeah. Well, you might need a new bow, a new muzzle and a new rifle. Yeah.

Yeah.

You can hunt all three. Definitely.

You know, I do. That’s, that’s it.

That’s it. Yeah.

So well, we’ll be shooting you an email in the next day or two just introducing you and the outfitter, like I said, then you, you got all the time in the world to kind of select, talk with them. They may be busy still hunting elk and things like that right now, deer season’s over, but Sure, sure. But yeah, got plenty of time going into prior to the draws and kind of when you’re gonna gear up, whether you do something archery or whether you do muzzle loader in September or whatever you or the rifle hunts in October. But it’s a good one.

Lots of options. Good one to scout in the summer as well. And yeah, you just put a lot of, you can put as much time and effort in as you want, you know, not being too far from Oh,

I, yep.

Where

You’re I love it. Yeah, I love it. You get three months. I mean, I might have to move to Nevada, I guess.

Yeah, you,

Well now pump the brakes a little. Jackpot’s not the favorite place

In the world. Yeah,

You’re you’re definitely right about that.

Anyway, it’s a long ways from jackpot. Awesome. But I just, anyway,

Well, congratulations and, and yeah, good luck up there with your deer and whatever else you still got going up there in Idaho.

Yeah. Yeah. Thank you guys as always, and great to talk to you. I, I did send you some pics of my stone sheep hunt and Astoria wrote, so John’s got that stuff sitting there and that’s awesome. And I think Bronson, you probably saw

It on, I did

So social or whatever, but pretty awesome. Yep, those are, those are good. But hey, you got a good start to 2026. That’s more than I got right now for next year on the, on the table. So Yeah, you’re ahead of us. I’ll,

I’ll take it. I’ll be in the lead for very little time, but I’ll take it. Yeah,

Okay.

All right, Justin. Sounds

Good.

Thank you guys.

Okay. You bet. Thank you. Bye. Bye. Bye. Pretty awesome. Yeah, that’s fun. To give those away. Okay, we’re gonna call Brian Newman. He’s the winner of the Yukon Doll Sheep Hunt and Bend is here for a minute.

Hello?

Hey, is this Brian?

Hey, this Brian, it’s,

Hey, it’s Adam Bronson, Jason Carter from the Epic Outdoors Crew. Sounds like you’re out on the mountain. You out hunting somewhere?

I’m working. Oh,

Dang it. I’m sorry. I assumed you’re out having fun. Well,

I’m pushing the wheelbarrow.

Oh, wonder you’re outta breath.

Yeah.

Well, you got a minute. I can,

I do.

Okay. Well, as you may be aware, we had a little bonus. You

Guys have gotta be kidding me. No, I’m not.

I mean, yeah, you wanted to put the wheelbarrow down unless you’re gonna dump, dump it quick or I don’t know where you’re at, but Yeah, we had

A, you’re

Kidding me. No, I’m not kidding. So we had a little drawing just a minute ago for our fall bonus hunt giveaway. We had a few hunts there. Oh, go. And, yeah, I don’t, you act like you know what hunt you want. I don’t know if you put tickets, goodness, all three of them. Or if you did ’em all in one, but

I did them all in one.

You,

That’s pretty easy.

You got the antelope. You guys are kidding me right now. You got the antelope tags. No,

No. Yeah. Well then you know what you got, you’re heading to next August. You, how’s, how’s the Yukon territory sound to go hunt? Dol sheep?

Oh my gosh. Oh, I’m shaking. That’s where

You got, that’s what you got. Well, that was funny. I thought, well, he knows what he’s got, apparently. But if you put ’em all in one hat, that’s pretty easy to decipher. So yeah, congratulations. Next.

Oh my gosh, end

Of July. This is so cool. Opening days August 1st, north Curl Outfitters, you know, $40,000 dollars Sheep Hunt. We’ll put you in touch with Mac and his crew there. But congratulations. Have you hunted sheep before at all? Anywhere

Desert.

Have you here in Utah or we’re we’re about, yeah. Did you? That’s

Great.

Well, this is awesome. You get to go on number two. Yeah, next summer. Amazing.

We’ll

Get an, we’ll get an email drafted. Oh my gosh. We’ll get an email drafted with all this. This is the best day ever.

Yeah.

Hey, just, yeah, just go dump that concrete or whatever’s in that thing. Just go dump it and call it a day, you know? Oh my gosh. Wow. Well, we appreciate it. Congratulations. Like I said, we’ll sh send you an email introducing you and the outfitter together. But this is legit. No joke. No joke. Not gonna, yeah. Wow. Tell all your buddies this is, this is, this is not, not a prank. Wow, guys,

Congratulations.

Okay. Thank you. You bet. Thanks you guys all this is amazing. Thanks so much. You bet. You bet. Bye bye. No, he knew. Yeah. He only put him in one. You’re kidding me. He wasn’t buying the ad If he did, the antelope didn’t.

He wasn’t even,

He was just, these guys are janky. They don’t, they don’t put them in the right bids.

That’s all. It’s, there’s some people that would choose the antelope over that. It’s funny. Well, we appreciate everybody that participates in this here at Epic Outdoors. And the, the support you give us without you, it’s just not possible. So thanks to all of you. And it’s fun to give those away. It’s awesome. Yeah. So nothing but world class hunts. All right, well, let’s dive in. We got a, we’re gonna talk about a couple of deer stories, huh? Since we’re going to Colorado, the, the lion’s share of, I mean, people third season, Colorado’s known for third season. Yeah. Second, third, and fourth, obviously is the option. A lot of people go second. A lot of people go third, fourth, not so many tags available. Tougher to get. But cash you just got back from second season in Colorado?

I did. Yeah, I did.

It was, how was it?

I thought it was gonna start out really good. The day before the opener, we actually got low six or eight inches of snow up high and you know, two inches of snow in the valley. So you were

Like,

You were Yeah.

Socked rolling.

Oh, yeah. Yeah. So I, I was socked in for a little bit and then after that it just turned warm, melted everything off. Within, within two and a half, three days, you couldn’t even tell it snowed even in the high country. So isn’t

That crazy?

Yeah, pretty wild. But really good hunt. Killed a nice buck. Went out there, had a buddy out there for four days or so. And, and

Ahead of you or with you?

No, with me. He just came and came and helped me. My buddy Dylan, he came out and before we even went out there, both of us, myself mainly just had a feeling that I was supposed to do it by myself. What do you mean? I don’t know. I just had be driving out

Your friend. If my friend says, I have a feeling you should do this on your own.

I have a feeling you should turn around and drive home and really be by myself. Really? You have that feeling?

I did. No, no. I just felt like if, whoa,

It

Was a gut feeling that if I was gonna kill

One, I needed some alone time. Yeah.

I just needed to be a, a loaner’s. Gotta be alone. You’re

Uninvited. Rule number

One. Rule number one, hunting with cash. He goes off of his gut feelings and they’re 99.9% of the time they are correct. Did you realize,

Did you play baseball?

Yeah, I did. I’m a very

Super, I was gonna say baseball people are superstitious like crazy. I am. It sounds like one of those types of things.

It is. I am superstitious. Like I, I will say I have killed, I killed my elk, this shear and that deer in the same pair of socks.

Who you serious? Wow. Your sock. Not for them.

Your wife taking and put ’em in the sewing machine. Get a little initial, initial

Little K on them for kill sock.

1, 2, 3, 4, 8 cash,

Right. Cash left. Yeah.

Yeah.

No, I have, I have two pairs of socks from sheet feet and one’s kind of a heavier one. One’s one’s a lighter. And I wore the light one when I killed my elk and I was

Morning up. Like you wouldn’t change out socks, like you would wear that pair for the whole

Season? No, no, not the whole season. No. I mean, wash,

I mean that hunting, that hunt. Not

The whole hunt, but no, I was switching

Around.

But you killed both early enough that it would just happen to be in the first pair of socks you wore? No, no, no.

I don’t believe it. How

Long you guys,

Five

Days in. Oh, okay. Sorry.

So

Baseball player, you know, you can’t wash ’em. How many pairs of socks did you go through in five days?

5 0 1 pair of socks.

You’re danger. So what made you pull it out on day five? I

Was my,

Is that when he went home? My gut? Yeah. He went home and I got, now I can pull up my good lucky socks. So this what happened. Every God, this is what

Happened. Today’s the day.

I’ll tell you, I’ll tell you how

It went down. When you leave Dylan, I’m gonna pull out or what’s his name? The what? D when your, what your brother’s name. Dylan. When you leave Dylan, I’m gonna pull out my lucky socks.

It’s so funny.

No, I, I’ll tell you. And this is a hundred percent truth and a hundred percent how my brain thought he left on the morning of day four. We hunted the morning and then he had to go. And then Josh swung by and he showed me a giant deer and Yeah. Oh. And whatnot. And so I was

Wondering how you saw that. Yeah. You saw it over there.

Over there? Yeah. Okay. And so I hunted the rest of that day, whatever, woke up the next morning. And I was like, I’m gonna wear the same socks that I killed my bull in. I said, I’m gonna kill deer today. Sure enough. Walk up there in a canyon. I’m

Concerned.

Walk up on a big knob.

I’m concerned for you. You should be. I do not keep track. I don’t even know what pair I have on right now. I don’t know if they’re black or, or gray or black. That’s or black and gray.

That’s the baseball player in me. I have a lot of different socks. Like, they’re not all the same. Like they’re all a lot of

Different, do you know what socks you’re wearing right now?

I know that it’s the si the kind of sock that I, that I have the most of. Oh, I know that. But like my a hundred socks, I have like some merino socks. They’re not so stinky and whatever. I have a batch of those and they’re all different. Just like some darn toughs, some sheep, Pete, some crispy, like just different stuff. Are you

Like a perfectionist clean freak? No.

No. Just ask my wife. Absolutely. Logan,

You’re, you act like you wanna say something over there, Logan.

He’s not a clean freak, but he’s particular. What do you mean? He’s got his stuff. He’s got his special pair of socks. No, he’s got a place for everything in his tent.

He got old man routines already.

He doesn’t have old man routines. He’s just got the routine. Yeah. He sets an alarm, like, you know what they need.

He needs about three kids at home to throw chaos. And then this nice order will go out the window.

That’s, I don’t have nice order. I’m just telling you like, I just, I put, when I pack my bag, my socks go in one thing and the rest go in the rest. And so I can just reach in. I know where I’m

Grabbing, you know what my bag looks like? It looks like a yard. Everything

Yard there

Together. A yard. It is everything.

Hey, I had to text Logan the other day to see if, if I, if he had my missing sock. That’s

True. Which one that you killed

Then It was, no, it was a different one.

Are you guys sharing socks? No, we don’t. No one else

Gets shared during a hunt in the tent with you

Guys. I don’t wanna know. Only cut.

No Logan’s stuff was all next to mine on my elk hunt. And I was like, I don’t know where that sock is. I was like, it’s got, it might’ve ended up in Logan’s pile somehow.

All right, so here we are working. So here we’re morning of day five. You’re like, I’m on my own. This is what my, I got rid of my friend. I knew I wasn’t gonna kill

Send, send him home. Did you send him back? No. He had to

Go. He had to leave. He had stuff to do at work.

But, but when you guys said your goodbyes, you, I have a feeling this is for the best. And he,

We both did like, I’m not kidding. I’m not kidding you. Both of us. Before the hunt even started, and I told Logan this, like he did,

He goes well in advance week before

What? Like a week before. You mean? I said I have

A feeling I’m supposed to be by myself when I kill a deer in Colorado. Yes, yes. You literally have premonitions like

That. Yeah, I did.

I’m I’m telling you it’s the freakiest thing. But they’re accurate.

It

Was weird. What kind of stuff do you tune into?

I mean he, he’s just getting, you’re just good at listening to whisperings of the spirit.

No, I told Logan, I said, I said Logan, I was like, I like, I don’t want to do this solo, but part of me kind of wants to and feels like I’m supposed to. So, but my buddy’s going so those first. So I’m like, I don’t know. Maybe it’s just

Man. So tell me how much enthusiasm you had those first four days when you knew it wasn’t gonna happen. Anytime you went out and hike and you knew you weren’t gonna kill

The last two days. What

Was it? Was it, no. The first four days with your buddy there, you knew you were just kicking against the pricks basically right there.

No, I didn’t know, but I had a feeling it was just like a gut feeling. And so the last two days that he was there, I was like, you just learning.

The

More, the longer it went, the more I was like, yeah, I’m supposed to kill it by myself. Like I’m supposed to do it solo. And so, and he kind had the same feeling, he says. And so we drive out, we talk

Around, this is a YouTube episode if I’ve ever heard one. And what, what’s the title gonna be? Socks and solo. Solo socks. Solo sock buck.

Socks. Socks and bucks.

Socks, singles, socks and bucks.

We’re gonna call it the The Lone Ranger. The

Lone Ranger. So for those of us who don’t have lucky socks, we’d

Probably be shocked at how many people do. Yeah,

I mean probably put a pull. We’re not doing a poll. No, I already, we are not. Post up your lucky socks. What do you have? That’s lucky.

I’m the only thing I have.

Tag out your socks. You’re lucky. Item of clothing. I mean, I’m gonna put a pole out ’cause I have killing pants.

What

Hands?

Okay. I did kill the buck in the same pair of pants. Get

Into just saying you have outfit. This is day one outfit this day two out. These guys are young. They’ve only got one pair of everything. How many pants do you take on a hunt? Because I’m telling you many What he,

He takes two pairs of pants for 10 days and happens to kill.

That’s it. You, you know, if you go down to a certain Mexican restaurant, you could lose a pair of pants right there. This particular hunt have accident. I have a washing machine and so I didn’t have to worry about it. If you have an accident, I take five pair of I, whatever, whatever’s fastest. Well, yeah. And lot

Had them on a fence. Rip one out. I

Mean, I had three pairs of hunting pants and one pair to drive in. That’s what I

Had. I did not see crying during this episode. I mean, just what if you run out of toilet paper and you have to use the top half of that sock, that’d be a problem. You, you, a problem would, you’d be traumatized.

You wouldn’t cut that pair of socks for anything.

Not now at that point. Do kill

Two kills within two weeks.

They’re proven

In those socks.

They’re proven. What

Would it take?

Are we really gonna keep those socks around forever? How

Much blood would you have to be losing before you use that as, as a ways to save your

Life? In all reality? Probably none.

Bull crap.

I, I’m serious. Hey, I’m just saying, I literally grew up playing, playing baseball, so I am superstitious. So I do think about, I take note, you just like small note, mental note. Like, oh, that was the

Same thing. Don, prepare things clog my mind. Yeah, I have no time for any of that. I have no time for that. Lucky. And then

That’s why you killed, killed the deer you have in. I’m just lucky find you. Don’t think about random

Problems. There’s probably some lucky things. Spirit’s probably been involved here and there. I’m telling you, I pray more when I’m on the mountain than anywhere else.

Yep.

Please, let’s change this. Please end this somehow. Why don’t we go right into the kill. Okay.

Day

Five. So we did from day one to four was terrible.

No, it wasn’t terrible. It was good. Like it was a fun hunt. Like we just, just sifting into your numbers smaller. Nothing big. No, just ones that just needed a year. You could tell like the next year they probably would grow and they would be there, but just sifting through.

So this morning you pulled up the over the calfs or they low low

Sock. They’re just normal crew sock. Okay. Yeah.

Pulled them on. You knew something was gonna happen. Did you have a spot saved in the back of your mind for when you’re alone?

I did.

Was it

The good spot?

It’s where I killed him, so

I know, but like, dude, you don’t put off

The great spot until day

Five. Do you Jason? It’s a, no, it wasn’t a great spot. So this was a

New spot for, it was a new spot. Jason knows. Well,

He called me and he’s like, well, you know, what do you think? And yada

No, no. I said ww jd what would Jason do? Yeah.

And you didn’t do what I’d do. Although we did talk about this area.

We talked about it. Yeah, yeah. No, I, I had it actually marked from the year prior from e scouting and whatever. And I was like, I should go check that out. And I was like, I need something

New. Well, and I, yeah, and I and I mentioned, you said, yeah, it’s on the list. Yeah. But then I gave you some other areas. Yeah,

Yeah. So we had went through some stuff and I was like, you know what, I’m gonna go there in the morning and, and see what’s in there. So I put on, put on the socks and I went up there in the morning, got to the top of the knob.

I didn’t know it was that important. I didn’t know this deer was dying no matter what he asked, he sent me a video clip and says, what do you think of the deer? Yeah. And I was like, it’s a pretty good year. Like Colorado’s having a pretty good year. Yeah. By this point we knew. And I said, I don’t know, you know, I Oh sure you could consider passing this deer. It seems like a pretty decent year. And you were like, yeah, but this would be my best buck most likely, right? Yeah. And I was like, oh, if it’s your best butt, kill it. Yeah. Yeah. I mean that was a no brainer. Yeah.

Yeah. Plus I think regardless, I was gonna go in there and try to kill him anyway. Yeah,

That’s my point. You were not asking, it wasn’t even, it wasn’t even a question. Yeah, no, you were just being nice. He wasn’t asking

For permission. I mostly called, was like, is this how you would work this situation to get this deer killed? That’s all it was. And I was like, Jason, this is what I’m thinking doing. You’re like, yeah, probably what I would do. I thought

You had a nail.

Okay, so and so glassed him up, hiked in g glassed him up. Yeah. So hiked in one canyon, glossed him up. He was 1500 plus little over 1500 yards.

Didn’t you? Didn’t you have to knock on a door? Like did you to get some easier access?

Yeah, yeah. I’ll get to that. It’s interesting. Glassed him up. He was, it was, it wasn’t till like 9 30, 9 45 and I’d glass the whole, it’s like a 360, you almost have a 360 view glassed everything. Seen just pockets of DA couple small box. I was like, ah, there’s probably nothing big in here yet. But you know, we’ll, we’ll hang out here for a while and see what moves at 10 o’clock and not gonna get outta here and do something better. Yeah. Not, you’re not gonna hike outta here yet. So

Scratch my ankle rubbed the lucky saw. Yep.

Yep. And so anyway, glossed him up in a spot I glass a bunch of times. So there was a group of those and just stretch or whatever. Yeah, yeah. And so he was with two smaller bucks feeding over the saddle. And I watched him, I was like, crap, they just went over to that thick face. That’s a long ways away. I don’t know. I was like, I don’t know how I’m gonna get him killed from here. I was like, I gotta get up there. And so I kind of thought too fast as, as you do when you’re like, can I get kill a deer? You know? So I’m like, if I can get up there, he might just be on the backside feeding maybe. So I dropped down and I stopped myself. I’m like, no, I gotta think about this. Like that’s, he’s not gonna feed out into the sun in the evening.

Like he’s not going to. And so I decide, I’m like, you know what, I’m gonna look at the map closer and looked at it. And there was a spot that I was like, I’ll bet you they could feed there in the evening. More than likely if they’re fed there, they shaded. Yeah, it’s shaded. It’s on the backside. I was like, that’s gonna suck to get into though. And so I went down, got service, sent a video to my buddy. He was like, what do you think? He’s like, dude, I’d kill him. Ww JD call. Yeah. Came in. Yep. That call came in. And so Jason, I told Jason, I was like, this is what I’m thinking. I was like, I’ll probably have to go knock on this door to make it easier on myself, but I can, we can go behind the pri like he’s

Like walk back behind. He’s can go around. But I, but I’d like to just go through

Some property. Yeah, yeah. Like it’d be nice to just go through there, cut two thirds of the hike off, otherwise I’ll have to walk clear around and over some ridges and stuff. And so anyway, I decided, yeah, I’m gonna go in after him and this is the plan and there’s, there’s some cabins and stuff. And so I was gonna go knock on a door and the gate was way, I mean gated, four different ones in there and that didn’t work. And so there was another one that was down towards the bottom that would still cut off probably half the hike I went to knock on, went up to the guy’s place and he must have heard my side by side coming steps outside. I’m like, oh great. He does great rock while there’s coming at you. No, it’s actually a little black border collar. A little border collar comes running out and I’m like, oh hey little dog, whatever.

And he doesn’t look too happy. So I’m like, oh gray, this isn’t gonna be a great conversation. I already know what’s gonna happen. So I step out, I’m like, Hey, hope I’m not, you know, impeding on you or anything. And he’s fine. I’m like, Hey, just was curious if I could access the forest from, from your place here and just cut off a bunch of distance. Get your orange on. Yeah, I got everything on whatever. And and he’s like, with some choice words essentially says no. And if I let everyone else in there, it would just be a, a crap show with some select words along in there and a stern tone of voice. And I said, okay, thank you. Like thanks for your time. Appreciate it. Like have a good day. See you got outta there. Decided to just hike back in there and made the hike and got back in there to a point.

And it actually looked even better than I thought it would. And I had one or maybe two options of where I could set up, get out, set up and shoot. And when I arranged the very furthest part where they had walked over the saddle, it was like nine 50. I’m like, Ugh, well we’re at least sub a thousand. I was like, and I’ve shot a thousand, like I’m not gonna shoot a deer that far. And I was like, well hopefully if they come out, hopefully they’ve dropped down and they come in, you know, down lower on the face. And so I kind of, I was ranging stuff. I was like, hey, there’s one that’s eight 40 clearing there. If they come to there, like I’d probably try it ’cause it’s my only option. And so sure enough, like I get there at like one 30, what was it?

Like two 30? Two 30 A buck stands up out of its bed that’s way closer. And he’s just a, just a small three point. So I’m like, hey, they’re starting to get up and move. So I keep glassing and about a half hour later I see coming outta the Pines, I see this buck’s two point buddy. You recognized her. They recognize that buck off the back. ’cause I was, I mean watch the video, it’s like, hey, I gotta watch for that buck or that buck or obviously the one I’m trying to kill. And so I watch him come out and so sure enough, 20 seconds later this buck comes feeding from behind him. I’m like, Hey, there he is. Like it’s happening. And I range him at 8 47, the little buck and my buck goes back into the trees and turns around and is coming back out.

So I get ready to go and he’s like right in front of the other buck and he steps out and missed the first shot hit just over his neck and they didn’t really know what was going on. And so obviously you’re flustered at that point. Forgot to level my scope on the second shot. Just, I don’t know how far canted it was, but I’m sure it was some and just barely missed like in front of his chest. I was like, oh my gosh. Like what is going on? You’re walking in. Yeah. Hunter’s worst nightmare. Yeah, you could,

You could see that

Yourself. Yeah, I saw that one hit the dirt. And so I’m like, crap. Like I gotta like drill. I gotta hit him on the next one or it’s done. Like, ’cause he is still standing there, doesn’t really know what’s going on. They’re all kind of looking at each other and a couple of the two points start feeding again. Like, no worries. So I jumped down off the rock and hurrying, looking at my video and he’s, I lo I lose him in the scope.

Is is that when you saw where you hit? Or did you literally

Saw it through your scope? I, I saw it in the scope. Yeah. I, I saw it in the scope. I was like sh that was right in front of him. And so jumped on off the rock quickly, look at the video, find him again and he’s just like right above a tree in the shade. Hard to see. And so get back up on the gun and whacked

Him. Find him. Yeah. Pound

Pounded him. I that I saw

That video.

Yeah. And so he, he goes right down, rolls behind some trees. So I sat there and watched for 20 minutes or so and then I finally saw his leg kick once so I knew where he was and then I could kind of make out an antler and I did wide under his chin. I was like, okay, he’s done. Like his back is downhill. He is against the log. If he was gonna get up it’s gonna be really hard to get up. So I watched him just to make sure he wasn’t moving anymore, whatever for another 10 minutes or so. And then started walking up there and pretty awesome. Sure enough, he was dead as a doornail. Yeah. So

That was that solo pack out.

Oh my

Gosh. Yeah. Is this, how did you think about your friend now?

I was really wishing he was there.

Cash.

Cash called him and said, I had a feeling I was supposed to kill by myself, but my feeling is not that I’m supposed

To pack it out

Now. Same my feeling. I feel head back.

He’s home.

Oh yeah, he is. Been home for a day and a half now. Well, I guess, yeah, almost 24 and a half hours or whatever, something.

And so, and since he left you saw lots of deer and had a hunt of your life.

Yeah, it was good. Yeah. You

Know what was holding you back?

I now I know. No, I’m just kidding. It’s fun. Dylan’s my best hunting buddy and so it’s always good to have him. Those

Packouts aren’t fun. I’ve done ’em in Colorado by myself when you have Oh yeah. Plenty of clothes. ’cause it’s usually cold.

Yeah.

All your gear. Then you have your, your tripod, your spot and scope, everything in there. It’s not like, Hey, you can take it back to the truck and go get him. It’s all there. And they, they’re

Terrible. Yeah. I told myself when I was going up there, I was like, well I’m just gonna pack him down to this bench right here that’s, you know, two thirds of the way down the face. And then I’ll come pack the rest of him. I’ll take like front quarters or something. Yeah. Do the rest of the morning. Like come get the rest in the morning. And so I load him all up and everything after I take pictures and cutting, whatever. Yeah, this is, and I load him all up and I’m like, I have to lay on my pack and roll over, do that whole maneuver. And I get him up and I’m like, gosh, like this is gonna suck. This is brutal. Like this is freaking heavy. So I get down to the bench and I’m like, I’m gonna go all the way to the bottom.

Like I’m just gonna get down to where it’s flat ground. I was like, then I can kind of hurry and still like drive home and not be home in the dark. And so get down to the bottom. I’m like, nah, I’m just gonna do it. I was like, I’m just gonna keep walking. I was like, I don’t care if I get out here at 11 or 12 or whatever because I killed him at three 30. And so I had plenty of time. So I just packed in the last, the last two, three ridges that I had to actually climb over to get around the end. That sucked. Yeah. So, but it was, it was good to do it. I was sore for a few days. I think I pinched a nerve in my neck. But you still came home and started a diet? I don’t get it. I don’t get this stuff. I didn’t start a diet. I just wa I just watch what I eat in the fall. I don’t know. Me too kind of.

I watch,

See as it goes right

In my,

That’s exactly it. Yeah.

Pretty awesome.

It was fun. It was pretty

Fun. Congratulations. That’s awesome. Cool. Yeah. You’d hunt it again?

Yeah, I’d do it again. Absolutely. Yeah. I’d kill that buck again too with,

Without a friend.

I do it either way. Okay. It’s more fun with a friend. It just depends

On your fem when that comes around.

Right? Yeah. If I know I’m supposed to kill alone, no one’s gone. No, I’m just kidding. No, I like to think like, I don’t know, like it was just a gut feeling and I was like, I feel like it’s gonna happen that way. And the further it got on the hunt, I was like, it’s probably true. And sure enough I, I’ve

Killed some deer by myself and one time I remember audibly hooting like, woo hoo. And then I look around

Like you’re like, oh no, no one’s here. It’s

If somebody’s watching me now and knows I’m alone, they’re like, that guy’s that

Weird dude. This guy’s a black dog.

My first big deer in Nevada was in 2003. And I was like, I mean I’m fired up. And I’m like, and I said something out loud like, you know, or whatever. I’m like that’s, I mean it was like kinda like the echo hook and it was just silent again,

Just in your own

Thoughts, you gonna hug five yourself and what are you gonna do? You know? Yeah.

It’s not fun by yourself. Like it’s definitely more fun

With people. It’s fun to celebrate but

It is good to know you can do it alone. Oh, you like there’s something about knowing, you

Know, nobody doubts you cash.

No, I’m not saying that. It’s just fun.

Logan

Mentally

How is, tell us about your car. Did you have

Any premonitions like that on the way over?

I send your dad packing home.

I didn’t have a lot of premonitions. No, I didn’t send my dad packing home. I was really glad he was there

Actually. Yeah. He’s skipped a dinner bill. Yes. Every

Night. Yeah.

No, he made me pay for everything. Really?

That, yeah.

Geez. He,

He’s from Minville.

Well hold on. I can’t, that’s not entirely accurate. He paid for like two tanks of gas in his truck, so. Oh, there you go. That’s pretty good. That’s pretty good for somebody else’s hunt. Yeah,

But he but he just paid probably for you on all of his hunt. He did that. We talked about,

He gave me gas money so it was fair. I didn’t feel it.

You probably had some leftover gas money from his hunt that you didn’t give him back. He

Had fives. Logan,

He’s got a big nice 20 gallon tank that sits in the back of your truck. That thing was full by the end of the hunt. He kept me going for a week.

Said

Logan’s Logan had fives left over for his Nevada,

I don’t know if you should take fives from your dad.

No you shouldn’t. They’re rotted from the inside.

Are they?

Yes. They’re, you

Gotta tell this story.

Okay. Yeah. That probably never came up. Scouting season for his Nevada hunt. We are running trail cameras and it’s, it’s dirty to run trail cameras in Nevada. You’re going everywhere all day. And so we’ve got that little tundra and it’s only got a 20 gallon tech gas tank tank. They’re terrible. So you’ve gotta have four fivers and another 20 gallon in the back of your truck just to make it. We get out and he’s got full tanks of gas in the back of his truck the 20 year and the Fiverr. And so I assume we’re good and we run outta gas and so well we, we fill up the tank and we’re filling it up and he is like, well these have been sitting at, well first of all, earlier that day we lost two ’cause they were rotted and so they leaked Yeah. All day. Like they were leaking and so yeah, they were leaking into the bed of the truck. That’s

Why we have the epa Imagine people like him. Well imagine that ruining the environment. Come on.

Leaking that. So it’s mostly vapor.

And you see some of these guys gallon trucks just burn up on the road and you wonder how does that just catch on fire? Now you know how you, this, how some of ’em, it hits the muffler and

Boom, logie bear or or logie bear installed the light bar

Dripping through your rusted out bed, right onto the muffler,

Whatever. We

Threw a little bit of gas what was left of those into the tank. And then towards the end of the day, we’re wrapping up and we need to fill up again. And he’s like, well these ones have sat outside all year with gas in them all

Year.

But he’s like, he’s like, I treated it before the winter so it should be fine. Stable. Stable. Put stable in them. So it’s like a

Synthetic really? Yeah. It’s like, ah,

Okay. And so we fill it up and hit the road again and it’s not 600 yards. Did that thing pop, pop, pop, pop, pop done, won’t it cranks but it won’t turn over and then or it won’t fire. And so we go and we stick a cup underneath where the fuel filter meets the gas tank line and we unscrew it and let a little bit fall out and I’m smelling it and I can’t even smell a trace of gas.

It’s water.

And I’m like, what the heck? I’m like, dude, I think these were

Full of water. Who would’ve thought to unhook that? Like I wouldn’t even, I’ve got those, got somewhere in the system. There’s a, there’s a bubble of water. Yeah.

And that’s when you just hit the inReach and say, come get me something.

Well, after the comment about the gas cans sitting outside, that was both of our first thought. And so I have those big emergency matches. They’re like this long and this thick. What I have ’em in the back of my truck in case I need to spend a night, a

Match match around gas. What’s about to happen?

So I’d drop a match in that cup. A gas we just dumped out doesn’t even light. Not even a specing.

Who would think to do that? Yeah dude,

I wanted to know if that was the

Problem. That seems the ain’t dangerous. Yeah, but it’s like I was convicted

Like it was like this much gas, like

Those guys that opened that run outta gas on their motorcycle at night. They opened the tank on their motorcycle and light a lighter to see how much is in there.

I I was a safe distance from the truck around no flammable

Components. And I, I look in the tank as I put this big match in

There and I dropped the match and run. It was very safe minville style and so

It wouldn’t even ignite it.

It put the match out like water wood. And so now we understand we’ve got 15 gallons of water.

I’ve in our gas tank. I’ve never done this. I’ve

Never, and so now we have to figure out how to drain it. How

Does the water get in? You know what I mean? Well well

Remember those jugs that were, you know

They condensate. Yeah.

I think and a pool. But

They have to breathe. Those have to Yeah. The

Cracks. And you had snow. So the snow just

Replaced the gas. Yes. And important thing is that sat outside next to the wall of the shed. So rain, snow, everything.

No cap. A

Year old gas, the way

Paul’s looking at that’s $4, that’s $25 a

Tank. He saved himself

Some of rainwater that could put it in somebody else, whatever.

Well we could have drank it. And so anyway, we had to drain out a gas tank. You did

How

You get that big old 20 gallon and then you rig up. So we, and this is our buddy lane limb for minville helped us rig us us up. We weren’t smart enough.

They’re siphon

Siphon tank. And so the fuel pump is air sealed so you can’t just open it and open up and expect it to self drain even if you’re facing downhill ’cause it’s vacuumed or whatever inside of the fuel tank. So you’ve gotta create a positive pressure in the gas tank to push it out of the line. So we put one of those car emergency under the seat car tire inflators and we cut off the tip and stuffed the hose in the gas tank and wrapped duct tape around it and then blew out the line. And it took eight hours. We slept next to the truck. It took over eight hours to drain that down. How

Are we just hearing about this

Now? I do not know. I heard about this. It was another truck. You had it hooked to a 12 volt light, cigarette lighter on another

Truck. Yeah, our body lane got there. We had that empty 20 gallon. So that was sitting underneath the gas line and then we had a duct tape that And then you pressurized into

The

Tank into the, and you

Emptied the tank without touching the tank.

Yep. Emptied it out. That just on the other side of the fuel line of the fuel filter. And then I ran to town in my truck and got new fuel, real, real gas. A ton of stable and real gas

91 octane.

Yeah. And then we dumped the stable in there for whatever was locked fuel. Yeah. And I did do, I did do nine one octane. Yeah. And,

And so then you ran this, the the tank dry out on the ground?

No, into that 20.

Into the 20

Because it was empty. But

Now you’ve con contaminated that.

Yeah, but

You can’t Well we dumped it out. I mean you dump it out, you leave it open for a day.

Was the majority of it evaporates? Was the majority of it water? Oh yeah,

It was all water. The match would not light any of it.

Oh my gosh.

It was just

Water. Are you sure these were just water jugs? The blue water jug.

I asked him several times and he is said no, my gas tanks are gas tanks. They’re those VP racing jugs. It’s hard to confuse.

Wow.

But, so it was not a good trip for us gas wise.

Why didn’t you just siphon the tank?

I can’t, we didn’t have, I can’t remember why we didn’t do it. Well

You know how antis siphons in a lot of ’em where you can stick the hose down but you can’t get it out and you gotta break it off with a flathead screwdriver

Because my dad can si I can’t. There was a reason why we didn’t do it and I can’t remember what it was.

So when you got that out and then you brought the 91 octane back, did you put five gallons in and try starting it?

I stapled the bottom ’cause Yeah,

Water,

Water, gas, alcohol. So I stabled the bottom and we shook it and then I put five gallons of gas in there and we shook it and then we fired it. And then once we knew that it was gonna run, did start, we started right up. Once we knew it was gonna run, we filled it with five more gallons. F ten five or 10 more gallons of gas, 91. And then it ran just fine. Finished truck cameras. Geez, it, it puttered a little bit, but it was fine. All in all check engine light was on for a month.

I don’t even know what to say. So many questions. This is the best story, but I’m, I’m done. You’re

Not even surprised. You know,

Paul, you’re not. I’m just, I’m just like

Too many sparks, cigarette lighters and matches and gas for

Me. Imagine being a mom listening to this podcast. I mean, my mom find, I’ve got my little boy out there with dad

Bathing in gas of all

Bathing in gas. 110 degree weather. Probably doesn’t have much of a water bottle. We know how your spare tire thing goes.

Yes.

You.

Yeah.

I mean,

Holy crap. So,

Alright. Lucky these kids are still alive.

Yeah. And then there was Colorado.

Okay. So yeah, that’s what we were talking about a bit ago because your dad, you know, you bought his, a lot of his gas there, but that guy is on the gas topic from Nevada. But anyway, back to Colorado,

Some amazing. So

He was good to me in Colorado. He did share a little bit of the cost, but he was making me pay for it. And so I got there a day or two early. Yeah. And started scouting and seeing a lot of bucks. Like it was so many deer that I couldn’t look at them all and judge whether or not they even had horns before got outta my view. And then I was having to go to the next ridge and look again at the same, but they all shuffle. They ran in groups of like 30 or 40 and tons of small bucks and d and then the bigger bucks are trailing. And I re, I texted Jason and I’m like, dude, you need four people here for one tag You do. Just to look at the deer

Sift through the mass just to

S sift through ’em. And I, my first morning I think I was almost 300 head of deer. And I,

It’s just fun though. It’s, that’s tough.

It was awesome. And I, I remember saying, I don’t know if I’ve ever complained about having, seeing too many deer, but I was gonna complain about it ’cause I, I felt like I was missing stuff. I, there could have been a big buck at the front of the group that I didn’t even get a chance to look at. And so it was, it was tough that way. So I was really grateful that he was coming out. And it’s hard to complain about seeing too much deer, but it’s hard. And so I just wasn’t really seeing the, the maturity, the size that I was looking for. Grinding through

Bucks. You are again, you are second season a little bit early.

Yep. And the smaller bucks were like, as soon as I got there the first day. So two days before the hunt, the smaller bucks were lip curling, nose in the air chasing doze. So I knew that it was coming. I just didn’t know if I’d get lucky enough to run into it. And then every day it just got better rut wise every day. More bigger bucks moved in. It was funny, we, we topped ourselves every day size wise, so, so we saw bigger. So best

Part of the trip

Yeah. Was coming every day and started getting marginal there for a while. But we were doing it. And the last two days I was there saw some questionable bucks and meaning

Question

Killer, like, like I stared at him for a long time before I decided to pass. And I just made it my goal to really, like, I wasn’t gonna shoot a buck in the heat of the moment. Like I really wanted to look at him, know that I wanted him and not be disappointed at all walking up onto him. And so, but I’ll back up a little bit. The second day a good, a guy that I know through a friend of a friend that actually lived in that unit, he hunted it a lot. He came out and helped me and we were exploring lots of country that day and he was showing me some spots he knew. And it was a lot of that unit is like that clay sand that just gets really, or that clay mud that gets really slippery when it rains. Oh, that’s terrible.

And it was pretty dry. It hadn’t rained in a minute, so we weren’t having a lot of problems except for up high where it didn’t quite dry out. And so we were up high taking it easy all morning with the mud and then we get down low again and we’re on a well graded road and I’m just fine. I’m cruising 30, 40 miles an hour on this well gRED road and all of a sudden these, these clay mud ruts come outta nowhere and I slam on the brakes and the guy in my passenger seat’s like, Hey, you’ve got, this road is washed out up ahead of you. And so there’s two big old holes in the road and then on the right side of us, there’s like a 20 foot drop straight off into this big old wash.

And you can’t, you’re, you’re those anti-lock brakes or whatever barking back at you as you’re trying to get stopped.

And, and this is all, I mean, it’s incredible how fast or how slow adrenaline makes everything feel. ’cause it probably, we, it was probably only 30 feet of slide before, you know, we hit it. And so you’re

Sliding and he’s telling you,

He’s like, well there’s holes. Yeah. So I’m sliding and I’m trying to slow down, but I’m not too worried about it. And he’s like, Hey, we’ve got these holes coming up, the road’s washed out. And I’m like, oh crap. So I’m slamming on the brakes, I realize I’m not gonna stop. So I just crank my wheels all the way to the left and just gun it trying to get up out of the rut. And I figured if nothing else speed’s gonna help hop these holes. And that’s exactly what happened. There was two, and I’ll show you, let’s

Just say you’re in the passenger seat and logie bear’s driving. I’m out. He’s running,

He’s running you off a cliff. I am a good driver under pressure. Especially I, I can do it. I could be a NASCAR driver.

I’m not whoa. Not gonna trust that.

So anyway, so I, I’m trying to get outta these ruts and there’s a big hole, a little bit of dirt and a big hole. And then they both, they take you right into this drop off and the ruts go right that way too. So like it’s taking me right towards the wall or the drop off. And so anyway, we had just enough speed and my wheels were cranked that we hopped the first hole with our front tires and barely hopped the second. Like it hits the wall and just bounces up on top. And my back tire doesn’t clear either of them. And we hit the wall hard enough on the second hole that it just stopped our truck completely. And I wasn’t sure how bad it was and how close we were to falling off that drop off. And so I put the parking brake on, put it in four wheel and turn the lockers on and then put it in park. And he’s gotten out and he’s like, don’t move. And so I’m like, holy cow. So I get out at that point and walk around and I’ll post a picture with this podcast. But we are, after it had rolled back after I put it in park, we are, I, it’s two inches from my front end falling into this hole and going how

Far?

20 feet, 20 feet down at least. And rolling. Rolling.

You’re

Gonna roll. It is 100% gonna roll because it’s one of those big holes. Your front end goes, how is this guy alive? And my back, my back tires are only this far from the edge. And so my front end goes, my back tire slips off and the whole truck goes over. First of all, it’s a miracle that we made it over those two holes. ’cause we would’ve rolled to the bottom if we wouldn’t have made it. Second of all, I put the truck in park and we didn’t realize how close we were to dropping off. And it rolled back just

As park does. Yeah. Gives you, it’s a two inch

Roll. And so it gave it seriously, I don’t know how my truck sat there long enough for somebody to come winch us out. I don’t know. I was just, I started filling in that back hole. So my back tires had some room to work with, with a shovel filled in that whole back hole. And it took me probably an hour and to do that before somebody got to us with a winch. And I, the whole time I was doing it, I was just watching my truck figure in at any point did I pay this dirt’s gonna crumble and it’s gonna go,

Did I pay my insurance premium

This month? And I did. I actually got, right before I left I got my new insurance cards and put ’em in my jack box. So worst case scenario, you know, new truck. But yeah. And so it’s

A near death experience. Every hunt you go on,

It was like seriously, I could not believe it. And so, I mean, so eventually these guys and little plug for him, he owns the Polaris shop in Vernal. So he’s a good dude. He comes along and he is got a winch on the front of his truck and he’s like, I don’t know, like if I winch you forward, you’re gonna, your back tire’s gonna fall into the cliff. And I’m like, well I think I can get out. I’ve built myself enough room with this shovel. I just need you to keep pressure on it so I don’t roll back. When I put it in drive. That’s the only thing I was worried about. And so he pressured it up or tensioned it up and I put it in drive and I did six inches forward and back and just 45 point turned until I had enough room to

Get around with him. Hooked on that if you go. Yeah,

He was just keep tension he goes as well. Yeah, exactly. No, he had a big old power stroke so he was not, I could fall off that cliff and it probably wouldn’t move it. Okay. But yeah, so just six inches at a time until I had enough clearance to get around those holes and I’ll post pictures but they don’t do it justice. It was, it’s Colorado. Yeah.

The residents, they’ll take jeeps in places. Oh right. For a cow. Yeah, for a cow elk. I mean this, it’s an adventure.

They do some hard roads down there that I don’t know if I have the toughness to do. Yeah.

But yet you can race nascar.

I

Could per capita. They don’t drive as many side byside in Colorado. They don’t. They do Utah. They use

Riggs. Well there’s a lot of roads that are that are vehicle only. Yeah. You know that they don’t want UTV

Ats. Yeah. But But they don’t believe

They,

It’s use Willy’s and old

Jeep Jeeps. Oh the lines of vehicles headed right now to Colorado from California and Texas

Towing

Jeeps. Not Utah. We don’t go to Colorado. But No. But are amazing vehicles coming into Colorado right now from Texas, California and Utah.

I saw trucks. Thousands. I saw trucks. I I’m, we’re not friendly to our trucks as you’ve heard, but I saw trucks in places they should not be. Yeah. And just Jeeps and so

Let’s get to the kill.

Alright. So it, like I said, every day was getting better and we knew it was gonna happen. I just, I would really like to my dad to have been there. He had to leave a day or two early for work and I didn’t have the same feeling. Cash did. Don’t

Lie about this.

So no I didn’t. I really wanted to kill with my dad there. Oh,

I’m saying don’t lie about this story. I know the real story. Oh

Geez. So

Don’t lie. I’ll call you out.

I don’t think I can lie. Nothing. It was really clean. So

14 shots later

When I was last year,

We’ve now got copper deposits

In the earth. I shot a box and changed last year. So 20 some odd bullets last. I don’t know if I should admit that on the air, but I

Did at one.

Yes. Where

Colorado?

Why? I told him he can’t lie

The Colorado

Deer last year. Yeah. So I probably might delete that, but we’ll see.

You

Remember that buck? I’m glad.

Yeah. Which buck was this? His

Buck.

His buck last He

Killed on typical buck that Oh

Yeah. My tripod with the in line then wind and 30 crap. 20 something. 22. 1500

Yards.

22 se $78. Did

You rebar it?

No.

Is that what it ended up being was 22 rounds? Yeah. Oh my gosh.

But okay. I did side it in halfway through. I went and shot it at a rock to make sure I was on So minus three from the deer.

No, I’m saying just at the deer. How many did you shoot?

19. Oh my gosh.

And I got crap one year. Oh. For shooting 10.

I’m deleting this whole five minute section. I don’t even have stories

Compared to Logan.

I don’t think you need to. But there’s sometimes that I, I leave the truck with four rounds, you know, three in it and one in my pocket.

I’ve got two boxes of ammo in my pack at all times. Oh my gosh.

40.

You never know what’s gonna happen. I did not, the,

The most I’ve ever packed is seven. That’s

Crazy. That’s not enough security for me. I,

My backpack on a sheet hunt with about 12 rounds.

Let’s just

Backpack and

I 12 rounds on a backpack.

You might need to walk one in Logan. Yeah.

I mean, I mean I have three in the gun, one in each pocket so they’re not jingling each other

Couple on the sideand

On 12 on that thing underneath my or six on that thing of the vinyl harness. And that’s,

Yeah. About it in case people have forgotten since last year. I had four stocks on that deer that I shot at him with. That’s true. That’s five

Round

Not in one sitting.

It wasn’t 20 in one sitting. It was, I had four, the door gave me four chances. Four different days. And they were all terrible. Which is my fault for taking the shot. But they were okay.

Fine’s. Five rounds. Yeah, I like this. Keep it in. You’re fine.

So now we’re going now.

Okay. Fast forward

2025.

I did a lot of practicing between now and then. Cash can attest. I got a lot better at shooting. He gave me some tips. This, this is where Logan can’t lie. I’m call him out. And so yeah, we went to the gun range the day before. He gave me some nice tips we’ll talk about in a sec. So yeah, we, we had see been seeing the deer congregate in these burns. They love these cedar trees. The broken to burns and they go back in the cedar trees. So we were just keeping our eye on those and it’s huge country. So we were just covering ’em all G glassing and moving and g glassing and moving. ’cause they were up all day running at this point. Even the bigger bucks and yeah, we’re just going down this road and we come up to this burn and we get out and we’re g glassing it. And my dad’s like, holy cow. I got a big buck. And I was getting frustrated with him at this point ’cause he would see horns with at least two splits and he would say, get your gun. Like I got a buck. And so I didn’t even move when he said that. I just kept on glassing. ’cause I’m like, you have when you, you have cried wolf me so many times this trip.

When you say two splits, what do you mean? Like,

Like two splits on like four. Four point. Like a four point? Yes. Okay. Sorry. He’d see a four point and immediately like, get your gun. Which might be a good strategy. But I was just frustrated

Paul. Paul’s excited. I love it.

I love it. And because I, so I, or I didn’t even move from my glasses. I’m sitting in my glasses and I’m like, you think I should shoot that one? And he’s like, yes. And I knew at that point he was Did you see the deer now? No, I had no idea where he was looking. Oh. And so fi and so at that once he said Yes, you should shoot it. I’m like, okay, I better look at this thing. And I turned my spotter and get it on the phone scope. And I could just see he’s tall and he is mature and he’s pretty much what I want. One of the better

Deer, you’ve a solid,

Solid for easily the best deer I’ve seen. Okay. And it wasn’t even a question. And we only had two days left at this point. And so yeah. I’m like holy cow. Yeah. We better shoot him you

In range.

Yeah. So I arranged him real quick and I was six 20. And so my dad’s setting up the phone scope and all the optics and I’m getting my gun set up. And what,

What didn’t you say your dad earlier in the podcast, you were like, I, my dad was having to go home and I wished he would’ve been there.

Yeah. So this, this was his last day I was hoping to kill while he was there. Oh, okay. This was his last full day. He was gonna hunt the morning Okay. With me. The next day day

I’m tracking a little bit better. ’cause for some reason I, I was thinking you were sending him off. No. And wishing he could have been there. There like I wish I was wishing he could have been there. Yeah.

He had to leave two days actually. Was there

Day? But yes, actually you were just thinking in your mind, I really want to kill white.

Yeah. Because it was getting down to the wire. This was pretty much my last evening with him. Okay. And so yeah, he gets the optic set up. I get my gun set up and, and

We know this is gonna be a show. How

Many, how many rounds are

Up? I’m gonna help him walk this in.

He, how many rounds are laid down on the

I had both boxes out and open. You did not. I opened the one box. I’m not messing around. He’s ready. And based on my history history, that’s how we’re, how he should have been. He’s to rock. We’re ready to go to work. My dad, my dad can’t, couldn’t stand that. I’d been shooting prone to practice long range shooting. Why? He doesn’t like, he doesn’t like it. What

What does he shoot?

Sitting, standing. Sitting free hand. Yeah. Free hand. A thousand yards. Like back

Up against a tree. Like a calling in a coyote

Or just Yeah, like your coyote stand. Just sit, just sitting on sticks or sit Harris bipod up to your chest. Well

I like that

Stuff and it’s good. It’s probably the most practical but it’s not, it’s not

Past 500.

You shouldn’t do it past 500. And so I’m on the, the clamp on the tripod and I’m getting the epic rifle. Yeah. And I’m getting it drive dropped in and I feel pretty good about it. ’cause I’m six, I’m six 20 at this point. And anyway, this just surprised me ’cause he is like, he’s like, dude, there’s a big flat rock right there. 10 yards in front of me. He’s like drop down and prone out on that. And it seriously was like perfect. They couldn’t have made a better platform at the range out here. Wow. And so I run forward 10 yards. I’m six 11 at this point. There’s tender

Mercies throughout this in pot tire. Yeah.

I, it was, it was my time to kill. And so yeah, I’ve dropped down 10 yards ahead of him. Prone out, rearrange. I’m six 11. Got your

Box of

Bullets. Yeah. Got my box of bullets and, and so, so water, water bottle just in case we’re gonna be there.

Might

Be there a while.

I got some barrel blaster to clean it out halfway through.

Got a p

And j laid out there on the rock.

Anyway, so I, I prone out and I get him dialed in and cash before I went on my hunt, we went and did another practice at the shooting range. And I left my safety on and I was sitting on the bench and I flinched when I pulled the trigger.

I have to preface this, I’ve never seen someone flinch so hard in my life.

First

It was so funny. It

Was a teaching moment then like, you’re gonna save, you’re gonna save so much money in shells if you can learn how to not do that. So

I, he had missed one and he’s like, ah. I pulled that one. I was like, okay. Like everyone pulls down again. So I have it recording on my phone and I just, I’m like, I’m just gonna watch him like just see what he’s doing. Sure enough, he’s in there and everyone can’t see this. But I’m not kidding. It was a whole body convulsive. I was like, whoa,

Whoa. A wall. A little defense for me. The 2 43 that I bought from Adam. Seriously, a slight wind will set that trigger off. Really? It is the lightest trigger I’ve ever had. And I, this was, I hadn’t shot my seven m two and a half since I’ve been shooting with my 2 43. And so you’re used to that trigger. When I left my safety on, I’m waiting and I’m just trying to figure out when this trigger pulls and then it’s not going. And I’m like, how hard do I have to pull this thing? And so I, I crank a little bit extra and that’s, but I did flinch. That’s f but that’s why it was so bad. ’cause I was pulling hard wondering what was wrong with this trigger.

So I stopped. I’m like, Logan, whoa. I was like slow squeeze. So every shot he took after I’m like slow squeeze before he is doing it. He said

He shot a thousand times shot

And he, and at a thousand he hit a clay pigeon. So yeah, it worked good. Awesome.

And so anyway, I’m prone out on this rock 600 yards, 10 and a quarter ram away on the dot. And I cash his voice in my head. Slow, squeeze, slow, squeeze. And so I just let that thing just barely come off and boom right through both shoulders and that thing wheelbarrows down and he goes about 20 yards and he, he kicks and he’s done dude. And so, you know, stop boss, put

Your box of bullets back

Together. Averaging out my last two years in Colorado. 10 bullets per deer. Not

Too loud.

It’s getting better. Averaging, averaging out

Average next year we might be,

We’ve only got five years before that. Drops below

Three

Back to a normal range.

You gotta keep

It one to two rounds.

We had a Swarovski shooting event. Oh. And so you’ve got some of the better shooters. Oh yeah. That sell optics and whatnot. Competitions and stuff. The guy that was there that did a little presentation is the coach of team USA for the Olympics.

Was this the last one? Yeah. That’s

Way he was there and had his personal rifle there. Wow. Guess what his trigger set out?

Is it heavy Uhuh

Half

Pound. I’ll bet it’s like half pound

0.61

Ounce.

Whoa. Wow. You could one ounce, you could breathe on that thing.

Yeah. He says, he said that thing will feel 10. Like it’s 10 pounds. He said when you’re sitting, when you’re under pressure. Yeah. He says they’ll have their little health watches and those, you know how they remind you to get up and walk around that you’re dying, you’re not breathing or you’re dying. Heart

Stopped. Reminds you,

He says their their watches will go off. He says when we’re wow. Ready? And he says, when we’re sitting down there and he says, when you’re trying to get that thing to go off just right, he says it, it’ll feel like 10 pounds. Wow.

That’s

Crazy When you’re used to it like that one ounce. That’s

Crazy.

You gotta do some serious shaving of a trigger to

Get that. I don’t think they shave. I think

It’s probably just the trigger

Though. Remember it was a seven. No it was a six five

Wildcat or something.

It was a wild It was. It was wild. It was a seven out of a six five case. I think it was kind of odd. Yeah. And it was a short action but it was a long bullet. And so what you couldn’t, you fed him sly.

Yeah. High shot high BC.

No Magnus

Magazine. Yeah. You fed him no mag. Yeah. You fed him singly. Yeah. But it would eject anyway.

That’s cool.

Yeah it was. It was really cool. It was cool. You’d be amazed at what one mile an hour of wind does. Yeah. At a thousand. Oh it’s crazy. We had it and we watched it. It was wild. Geez. Anyway, just kind of Logan.

Good job. Way to way to come through. Wait a think of cash as words in your mind?

I could hear it in my seal.

The deal. He told me that and I was like, that’s a proud dad moment for me. Just

I’m getting him ready. Thanks dad.

When he told me he is like, your head was, your voice was in my head. I said, that was my goal.

That’s all I could hear. And he annoyed the crap outta me that day. He said it a thousand times but it was well worth it. I’ll never forget it. Every time I shoot it’ll be in my head. Head. It

Worked. That was my goal to bug you that day. So when you were in crunch time It worked.

It worked. Oh good.

That was perfect. Kill so great buck. You’d love to hunt. You’d go get Yeah. You guys are

Tons of deer. Yeah.

That, that hunt was fantastic. Awesome. Any opportunity I got to go back, I’d be there. Yeah. But Colorado’s great that way. The only thing I don’t like about hunting Colorado deer is they’re so big. You walk up on them and sometimes you doubt yourself ’cause you’re watching this butt. Big body. Big body and you know what’s going on. Yeah. And so I’m walking up on it and my, anyway my, I called my dad ’cause he was walking me in and I’m like, dude, I don’t know if we should have shot this thing. ’cause it’s horns are right up against its body and its neck. And he was rutting hard. Yeah. It’s a big old giant neck. And finally I get him propped up and look at it and I’m like, oh nevermind. We’re good. But that initial shock of walking up on a ginormous body deer scary. Don’t let it fool

You. We’ve passed bucks. We shouldn’t have passed. Oh, just because the Colorado bodies. Yep.

I did last year coming from Utah, Nevada. Jeez. Yeah.

Pencil necked, Idaho pencil, neck desert dwellers.

But you’re looking at co deer with mul deer horns on ’em. Then you and

You go to Colorado, they’re prepared for a winner. Four.

Four winners. Yeah.

All right. I’m done with this podcast. Are you guys done? My mouse dry John?

Yeah. You got something else? No, it was good. I, I mean this one was enjoyable. I Logan, I don’t know a lot how you’re alive really. If you’ve done this throughout your life, some of the things you’ve just told us today, it’s,

You’ve got like 500 seasons

Left. What I just want is Logan, when he’s 50 years old to go back and listen to these podcasts back when he was a younger guy,

I could find a life-threatening experience from every single adventure I’ve gone on with my dad. Yeah, a hundred percent. It’s always something common

Denominator. Yeah.

I mean when you, when you take a match that’s as big as, what do you think? Oh lamb,

One of those firework lighting matches right there. Big

Long one. A sparkler

And and you. And you knowingly put it in a gas cab to see

If it lights, just to see if

It was a paper cup with a quarter inch of gas in it. You guys are making me sound like I’m setting off Thermite in the wilderness.

Logan’s out there just committing arson. I

Mean when he’s learned using words like emulsification and stuff, you know, he is been deep dive.

Me and the guy at Ace Hardware had a chemistry lesson.

All right, I’m out. I’m out. John. Well do we have anything else? I think there are

Everybody Go to Colorado. Yeah. Yeah.

Poor old dad that can’t get a tag, but we’ve been around our kids all over the place helping them fill their tags. Have everyone post up their kid kids as animals from this year or something like that. Yeah.

A great idea. You like it? Yeah, do it. It. What do you think Johnson? Love it. Like this year’s kid’s kills. You want the last, within the last two

Yeah, just and the key is the key entry is hashtag Epic Data of the year, right? Yep. Data of

The year. Yeah. Epic Data of the year.

Okay. We better go look and see if that hashtag tag’s taken. But

Anyway, but if they tag us and do that, I’ll be able to filter it. They’ll lower tags, we’ll get ’em all

Epic data of the year and then tag Epic underscore hunts and we’ll have it and we’ll go from there. We’re gonna give away what? What do you think Bronson?

Let’s do it. Tripod kit, epic Ultra tripod kit, legs and Panhead. You know, 500 value.
