EP: 135 Making the Most of Your Hunting Season. In this episode of The Epic Outdoors Podcast we talk about making the most of your hunting season. We talk about hunts we’ve had so far this year, and hunts to come. We talk about failures, tag soup, and successes we’ve enjoyed so far. There’s always a lesson to learn even when a hunt turns out as less than we had hoped for. We’ve all had our share of tough hunts but its a matter of learning, growing, and doing it better the next time.

00:00:01:23 –> 00:00:06:08
Let’s talk about mass. Let’s talk about timely, let’s talk about extras. Let’s talk about width.

00:00:06:11 –> 00:00:14:11
But we could have been heroes. We ended up zeroes, but we could have been heroes. I’m just saying get the points so you have options. Get the points. So you have options. Anything to do with Western big games.

00:00:17:22 –> 00:00:18:06
Welcome

00:00:18:06 –> 00:00:21:09
To the Epic Outdoors Podcast, powered by Under Armour.

00:00:21:24 –> 00:00:48:08
Hey everybody. Jason Carter. Adam Bronson. Wyatt. Wyatt. Wyatt’s here. We introduced him last time. Now we’re gonna really give him some grief. He’s, he’s been in here in the office a bit here in the fall. Some of you may know that of course he’s dealing. We’re dealing with some license application renewals and different things. Getting guys set up for 2020 hunts, if you can believe that already. 2020, you know, 2020. I always, always thought we were supposed to be in little, our own little spaceships and airplanes. Remember,

00:00:49:02 –> 00:00:53:20
Remember fly around land, get out, set up your tent, start hunting. We’re still

00:00:53:20 –> 00:00:57:04
Using regular gasoline. Yeah, I don’t,

00:00:57:26 –> 00:01:02:29
It’s not. You do have to choose. You can’t choose between the leaded and unleaded. We did do that.

00:01:03:11 –> 00:01:06:21
We did. Yeah. We went from regular, remember it was regular lead and unleaded.

00:01:06:21 –> 00:01:09:16
Yeah, it was leaded, regular and unleaded. Yes.

00:01:10:00 –> 00:01:11:08
Now we’ve got the cheaper LED stuff.

00:01:11:20 –> 00:01:15:04
Yeah, let’s burn lead. ’cause it’s just a 75 Chevy Blazer. It’s burn it.

00:01:15:12 –> 00:01:36:20
Yeah. Yeah. And put lead in the atmosphere. That’s right. We can’t do that no more. So that’s the only change we see that we’ve made. There’s been some king ranch leather, a few nice leather interiors and a few little things with cell phones and people know where you’re at and can track you in G P s. I mean, there’s some things, there’s definitely some updates with 2020, but not we not spaceships. That’s right.

00:01:36:29 –> 00:02:01:05
2019 is less than two and a half months left of it. Yeah. You know, and it’s just the time of year where some people stunts are done. If you’re, especially if you’re predominantly an archery hunter, you may be done for the year and it’s lot, we’re getting some calls in the office. Things are, people are starting to wanna start thinking about next year and planning. And we’re buying landowner tags and we’re selling landowner tags as fast as we can. And if

00:02:01:05 –> 00:02:07:03
You’re archery only like Cameron Haynes or Randy Omer, you know how many hunts you have left. And it might be one. Yeah,

00:02:07:06 –> 00:02:11:22
That’s right. ’cause maybe you drill a late season mule deer or something. That’s about all you can hope for. Yes.

00:02:11:24 –> 00:02:24:14
We got Wyatt here. We got John Peterson as well. Chris is out in the hills. He’s, he’s hunting and hopefully they knock something down. Although it’s been tough this second season in Colorado as we were kind of excited. There was a little bit of a skiff of snow out there. Little

00:02:24:14 –> 00:02:44:12
Bit. But it’s, I guess depends on where you’re at. Southern Utah, we got mostly wind here on the Utah General hunt. Yeah. A lot of wind. Little and colder weather. But man, we’ve been under high pressure funk for like two months. It’s, it’s been unrivaled. I can’t remember a stretch like this in southern Utah. From mid-August.

00:02:44:26 –> 00:02:45:08
No months

00:02:45:14 –> 00:02:48:06
To mid-October. Literally months. Nothing.

00:02:48:22 –> 00:02:53:11
Yeah, I saw a record thing 115 days with no moisture, no rain down here in the

00:02:53:11 –> 00:02:56:21
South St. George I heard. Yeah. St. George somewhere. Hundred 15 straight days.

00:02:56:21 –> 00:02:56:29
Which

00:02:56:29 –> 00:03:06:24
Is brutal. Which is the monsoon season. Which is for there, that’s when they get probably, I don’t know. I don’t know the exact number. I would say over half their moisture in the last two months. Yeah. They should have got, yeah.

00:03:06:29 –> 00:03:41:05
That’s what’s crazy about this is, is in one aspect it’s gonna, you know, if we don’t, you need weather in Colorado to make the hunts great. We all look forward to snow and heavy snow and chaining up and all of those fun things. Right. That comes with big deer. But, and that may not happen. But having said that, some of these other hunts like Nevada and Ariz, Northern Arizona and Utah, these deer are stuck to water. They’re vulnerable. So it’s kind of a crazy, some hunts are gonna be off the charts. Unrivaled deer are vulner. ’cause they still have to hit water even though it gets down to the forties or thirties. Yeah. At

00:03:41:05 –> 00:03:48:01
Night. Well ’cause they’re migrating and they’re switching from summer feed down to the PJ Sagebrush to, you know, winter. Winter,

00:03:48:09 –> 00:03:50:12
Dry winter, dry, A dry diet. Yeah. They’re

00:03:50:12 –> 00:03:53:02
Switching to dry diet and Yeah, they’re water. They’re gonna start water

00:03:53:11 –> 00:04:09:10
So they’re gonna be stuck to water. So now you’re gonna kill. It’s kind of interesting. You’ve got amazing antler growth ’cause it was amazing. Wet spring and early summer and then they’re stuck on water and vulnerable is kind of great in a lot of aspects. But then like Colorado’s just flat getting the bucket.

00:04:09:10 –> 00:04:20:01
Yeah. You’ve got too much timber places where you got timber like that and you don’t get the migratory deer like you get in Nevada or Southern Utah or, yeah. I mean, you know, things like that. But anyway,

00:04:20:07 –> 00:04:37:19
Anyway, kind of interesting. So anyway, gon places like that have just been unbelievable in certain aspects. Although kind of been a different rifle hunt. I mean we’ve had a couple of giants, but like you said, Wyatt and Wyatt’s our gon king, he’s basically raised there. Huh? You got that deer up there.

00:04:37:19 –> 00:04:39:01
Really. We spent a lot of time there. Yeah.

00:04:40:09 –> 00:04:42:23
So tell, give us a little update on what you’ve been hearing.

00:04:42:23 –> 00:05:00:05
It just kind of seems slow right now. It seems like those deer just migrating off real slow, you know, and they actually kind of moved up real slow too. And I think a lot of it has to do with the, the new Chainings and all the feed projects they’ve been working on over there. It’s really helping the number of deer. But it’s, you know, kind of screwing up that migration that they’ve had for, for a lot of years.

00:05:00:11 –> 00:05:01:22
Not all at once. They’re

00:05:01:22 –> 00:05:01:24
Down.

00:05:02:04 –> 00:05:03:14
Is it hanging ’em up in the chainings A little.

00:05:03:14 –> 00:05:11:26
Yeah. ’cause they’re coming off and then instead of just a wall of thick seaters for, they’re like, oh 20 miles. They’re like, let’s stop and hang out here and move down to the next one.

00:05:11:26 –> 00:05:18:26
So I’m seeing a few dead deer and chainings. Do you think they’re killing them, driving them to the chaining and taking pictures or do you think they’re killing ’em in

00:05:18:26 –> 00:05:24:05
The chainings? No, a lot of ’em are hunting ’em right through right there in those new chainings, everything, you know, not even the new chain chaining wells, what you’re saying,

00:05:24:05 –> 00:05:25:08
Habitat project work.

00:05:25:23 –> 00:05:29:01
Well that unit needed a bunch and it’s had a lot done. Yeah, it’s

00:05:29:01 –> 00:05:35:22
Great. I think it’s, you know, a lot that’s making it what it is today. I mean it’s probably as good as we’ve seen it in a lot of years. For sure.

00:05:35:26 –> 00:05:37:23
So are you saying the good days are back or the good?

00:05:38:28 –> 00:05:42:28
I wasn’t old enough to remember those. Early nineties are went way back. We’ve

00:05:42:28 –> 00:05:46:20
Got a millennial. I’m telling us that the days it’s never been better. Okay.

00:05:47:23 –> 00:05:52:01
From what I remember, this is a, a banner year for what’s going on. Yeah. It’s

00:05:52:01 –> 00:05:52:22
A great year for the last

00:05:52:22 –> 00:05:55:26
Years and statewide almost for mule deer. It seems. It has been.

00:05:55:29 –> 00:06:22:10
It’s been tricky though. That’s a very different unit because of the migration and we’ve had little to zero weather, but those deer, they move anyway on that unit that gets below 50 degrees and they start migrating. It doesn’t need to rain, doesn’t need to snow. It feels like they just pick up their heads and start moving. We’ve had a full moon high pressure. So it’s been tough in some regards. But in other guards, they’re moving to winter range too and they’re tied to water and they are on that unit pretty heavily.

00:06:22:18 –> 00:07:13:01
Very interesting. So do we wanna throw a little shout out to Outdoor Edge? They’re a good partner of ours. They, they make a wide variety of products, including a knife that has replaceable razor blades. They’re very sturdy. We’ve used them on a lot of our hunts and they’re just an incredible product. So anyway, go to Outdoor Edge, you can call ’em (800) 447-3343 or go to outdoor edge.com. Anyway, we’ve had a lot of members also do really well in different hunts across the west. Alaska, Canada, some of the sheep hunts it seems like have been a little slow Yeah. Up North Canada and stuff. Yeah, I mean you did well up there. Bronson killed a great stone. You kind of set us off here at Epic with getting on the board very first right off the bat, but seemed a little tough. I mean, generally speaking over the broad spec spectrum. Yeah, I,

00:07:13:04 –> 00:07:39:07
I guess in general I would say that, yeah, I mean maybe more on the stone sheep side of things than, than doll sheep. But you know, lower 48, a lot of the sheep punts we’ve, man, we’ve got some great rams in from members. I mean some giants from New Mexico and Montana. I got another one in inbox today from a guy from Utah killed in Montana in the brakes. And it’s, I dunno, it’s just stuff’s going down hard right now. It’s in the middle of it. And I think

00:07:39:07 –> 00:07:41:22
I saw that one. See 17 inch base and 40 long.

00:07:42:07 –> 00:07:55:06
That wasn’t, no, that was about a 180 4 round. So that ram you described was, sounds a lot bigger than that, but, but anyway, just, yeah, it’s in the middle, middle of that heavy right now. Sheep season’s still on for some people. Really? Really?

00:07:55:06 –> 00:07:56:17
Yeah. Who, who, who?

00:07:56:17 –> 00:07:59:20
Adam, myself. I’ve got a tag un punched in my pocket.

00:07:59:27 –> 00:08:09:00
We’ve been grinding out a hunt, Adam more than me. I went down a few days and what a grind. And it’s not, it’s actually been a happy grind seeing a few

00:08:09:00 –> 00:08:33:13
Sheep. Yeah, it is. Seeing sheep, seeing the weather’s been great for hunting sheep. I mean, which had a couple windy days, but you don’t really want cold, rainy, nasty days. Like a lot of other things that you want weather on hunting elk in the ru or even mul there to initiate some movement or activity up and down, you know, out of their beds multiple times throughout the day. Sheep, you kind of just want bluebird weather. They’re a

00:08:33:13 –> 00:08:42:19
Fair wheeler animal. I mean, it’s like sheep and coo deer. Those are one animal. You don’t have to wake up on time. Yeah. You could wake up a couple hours after daylight and still see the biggest ram of the day. And

00:08:42:19 –> 00:09:17:17
We sit on our knobs a lot of times, tell, we sit on two knobs, day a day, day, you know, till noon. Then we switch and we mix it up. And just so somebody doesn’t have to sit there all day in the same spot because that’s, that’s what you do. You can’t see everything from one, you know, you see about 50 to 75%, but there’s always a backside to every ridge you’re looking at and cut and all that. So we’ve, I’ve had a good time. You know, I’ve really kind of, you know, as I’ve got some of my guided clients done on, on other units and whatnot, it’s just kind of opened up that, hey, I have 25 plus days left to the end and, and let, and you’re use,

00:09:17:17 –> 00:09:17:24
Let’s

00:09:17:24 –> 00:09:18:00
Just milk it.

00:09:18:05 –> 00:09:20:24
You’ve cleared out your schedule and you’re gonna use ’em

00:09:20:26 –> 00:09:33:04
Pretty much. Yeah. If I need ’em, I’ve got ’em. And you know, I’m trying not to feel the pressure of, hey, I’ve got a, you know, once in lifetime desert sheep hunt, I know I’m gonna kill a sheep. I’m not worried about that part of it, but even

00:09:33:04 –> 00:09:34:22
If just, just for the cape or something.

00:09:35:19 –> 00:10:15:29
Yeah, the meat, you know, but I, I know that’ll happen, so I’m just gonna enjoy it. And, you know, had my boy come out for a few days, you know, he’s, he’s just, you know, freshman in high school now, so can’t come out a bunch. Had my mom come out. I mean, I’ve had a lot of people come and go. I think I’ve spent about 15, 16 days of field so far. So just kind of realize everybody’s got stuff going. But as, as stuff comes and goes, I’ve had my brother Aaron, of course, and Wayne, and just, it’s been fun and came in, came back to have a, you know, to get a shave and, you know, make sure my wife and kids remember who I am. And, and we’ll be back in a few days and go hit it for another week or 10 days.

00:10:16:05 –> 00:10:51:22
Well, kind of the interesting thing too is that Wayne, we tease you at camp at night. They’re like, Wayne’s like, you’re the worst client we’ve ever guided. Oh yeah. Could you imagine taking Adam Bronson? Okay. King of Utah sheep. And, and well, you know, he’s broomed an inch and a half on the left or I’d really be thinking about pounding that round. And so anyway, it’s so, so fun. Like being out there and just knowing Adam’s willing to hang it, hang it to the very end and watch him clear his schedule and watch him and then tell him it’s good. You cleared your schedule because it is gonna take maybe the full time. Chris is wanting to video a little bit and I’m like, well Chris,

00:10:51:26 –> 00:10:53:00
I don’t know when to tell you to be there.

00:10:53:21 –> 00:10:59:13
Have you got 30 days to give? ’cause that’s really where we’re at. It’s kind, it’s awesome. Yeah, it’s awesome. It,

00:10:59:15 –> 00:11:03:16
It could be over in 15 minutes when the right ram it right round

00:11:03:22 –> 00:11:04:02
Shows

00:11:04:02 –> 00:11:20:05
Up. It trips my trigger so to speak. And I don’t really have a super preconceived mo notion, but I just want to, I just want to hunt it. I wanna hunt it and give it, give it all. I got hunt some places maybe that I won’t hunt. You know, normally a little bit of oddball places. Some of those, we learned

00:11:20:06 –> 00:11:20:23
A couple of places.

00:11:20:27 –> 00:11:39:24
Yeah. Some of those don’t have any sheep I can tell you right now. But, but you don’t know was a fun until you go there sweat. It was a great overnighter. And you know, there’s, there’s not a track. Looks like it’s five years old in there, but hey, you know, it’s, you might find the right ram with a little group of used tucked away and the hunt’s over quick. So if he’s

00:11:39:24 –> 00:11:47:24
Heavy, long old and a low dropper, he’s dead. That, that’s not, that’s what we’re looking for. That’s not

00:11:47:24 –> 00:11:49:25
What I’m, we’re looking for much just everything.

00:11:49:25 –> 00:11:51:29
Right. And, and we’re in Utah. Okay.

00:11:52:14 –> 00:12:09:13
Yeah. Trying to forget Arizona, forget Nevada looks and scores and all that. Remembering where we are and, and all that. But no, it’s been a fun, fun time. And so, like I said, I’ve got about 20 days left of season as of today. 2021. I don’t know, something like that. And we’ll see how many we need. It’ll

00:12:09:13 –> 00:12:09:16
Be

00:12:09:16 –> 00:12:09:19
Awesome.

00:12:09:27 –> 00:12:10:04
So

00:12:10:14 –> 00:12:10:26
You’ll

00:12:10:26 –> 00:12:12:26
Kill a gray ram. So anyway, yeah.

00:12:13:05 –> 00:12:43:17
Or you just want to give another shout out to another one of our partners phone scope. It’s that time of year. 00:12:43:17 –> 00:12:45:05
About it. What else we got? Let’s talk about Nevada.

00:12:45:24 –> 00:12:48:04
Yeah, chase. Let’s talk about

00:12:48:04 –> 00:12:50:06
That mule deer day. Yeah. So I drew a tag.

00:12:50:08 –> 00:12:51:14
Did we talk about that at all?

00:12:51:27 –> 00:12:58:04
No. Yeah, we haven’t even podcasted. This is a rare occurrence right here. This podcasting is unusual and

00:12:58:06 –> 00:13:08:24
We’re sorry. And the hunt hunts, it kind of becomes that way. And we realize a lot of people are traveling hunts. They won’t, you know, we kind of, I guess disappear from the podcast frequency scene of things.

00:13:08:24 –> 00:13:11:25
Why’s think Wyatt’s not even sure who his boss is. He’s just thought we’re on,

00:13:12:07 –> 00:13:14:06
He’s just holding down the fort here.

00:13:14:09 –> 00:13:16:29
He’s like the rooster of the hen house over here. You know what I mean?

00:13:17:10 –> 00:13:20:16
But it’s, but yeah, let’s talk about that

00:13:20:28 –> 00:13:23:00
Giant. Well let’s

00:13:23:00 –> 00:13:27:11
Talk about mass. Let’s talk about time land, let’s talk about extras. Let’s talk about Witt.

00:13:27:15 –> 00:14:01:04
Yeah. He is a good, so he did get lucky. I ended up drawing a tag, drew a muzzle order tag in an obscure unit. I mean, just one of these units that doesn’t have a lot of deer in it, but I just wanted to go down and try something different. And anyway, start scouting it and realizing, you know what, there’s deer in any of these units that are as good as some of the best units in the state. It’s just putting time in and whatnot. So anyway, ended up guiding a guy the first week of the muzzle and couldn’t even hunt my unit for the first week. And then how’d that

00:14:01:04 –> 00:14:01:08
Go?

00:14:02:07 –> 00:14:16:06
It was terrible. Thanks Adam. Still have an open tag. Gonna be continuing to work on that. And, and then went down and ended up, you know, hunting Adam. I mean, who was all there?

00:14:17:05 –> 00:14:17:12
Who

00:14:17:12 –> 00:14:17:22
Was there

00:14:17:28 –> 00:14:19:08
On, on the deer? Which hunt

00:14:19:13 –> 00:14:23:19
On the first day? The first day we went down there. I’m trying to think, Chris, there, I

00:14:23:19 –> 00:14:24:13
Wasn’t there the first day.

00:14:24:13 –> 00:14:40:28
Chris was there, brother-in-law. Anyway, went down there and hunt in a different deer. It was what we thought was a book typical. And we got on him and, and just wasn’t as impressed when I got close to him but was gonna kill him. And everybody was giving me a grief. And so I was gonna just

00:14:40:29 –> 00:14:45:14
Kind of like what you’re giving me now on my sheet. Yes. Basically. Yes. Like same.

00:14:45:21 –> 00:14:54:25
Well I, I felt like he was a low nineties deer. Wouldn’t that book and, and not that that’s not a great deer. It’s a great, a great deer. But I just, but but had other deer scouted, like let’s

00:14:54:25 –> 00:14:57:18
Go look around. And you had 20 days a season. Yeah. Kind of like me.

00:14:57:19 –> 00:15:58:13
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That’s right. And so good point. It’s right. You’re right in all, all regards. And so anyway, so I was like, well, so anyway, didn’t work out. Deer wind ended up winning us super. Kind of a smart deer was worked by some other locals and whatnot. Obviously there was a lot of tire tracks, foot traffic. I mean, we just felt like there was pressure in there the first week and when, when we weren’t there. And anyway, so the next day was Sunday. Went to church, did all that, hung with the family, a bit loaded for bear. Went down, got camp set up by two in the morning, 4:00 AM left camp, went in on this other deer, which is probably the biggest deer we knew about. Didn’t really think he was as big as he was. And then ended up g glassing him up the first morning we even tried. And, and that was the most, the toughest deer. I thought, there’s no way we’ll see this deer, let alone kill him with an open sight muzzle order. You know what I mean? So you had

00:15:58:15 –> 00:15:59:05
Prec scouted him?

00:15:59:18 –> 00:16:12:20
Prec scouted him. Yeah. Pre scouted him. But then this is the first time I’ve ever seen him with the velvet stripped and finished. You know what I mean? Like Yeah. This is what he truly is. And I I I was breathless when we first saw him. I was just like, that’s that’s

00:16:12:20 –> 00:16:18:05
A, he’s an air sucker. He airy. Airy. Yeah. You put a clip on your Instagram that’s just

00:16:18:09 –> 00:16:26:05
Jawdropping. Yeah. And it was, and and, and like we’ve talked about that deer on the ponson would’ve been a 40 inch. Yeah. But he’s just a small body, so he

00:16:26:05 –> 00:16:37:12
Yeah. Desert deer, you know, different body, different ears. Yeah. All that. Yeah. You get a Colorado or you get a, even in central northern Nevada, deer, Utah, Henry Mountains, that thing’s 40

00:16:37:12 –> 00:17:27:25
Inches, 40 plus. Yeah. And so anyway, ended up beding him and then there was a heavy wind that day. 25 mile an hour wind. Perfect. So the stock was walking to him. Yeah. Wasn’t tiptoeing wasn’t sneaky. Oh. Just going down a wash, walking right to him. Walked this little cove was pretty much, you know, the only live country trees in the near vicinity. So I knew he would bed in there. And then he had a lot of variation. He could go bed over here, over here, over here, whatever. He had a lot of options in there. And so anyway, the wind was perfect. Although what I had to wait him out for like five hours and super thick. And anyway, ended up he moved beds and I kind of watched him. I had his aunt or sticking out the side of a tree bedded. And I just waited and took a few selfies and whatever. Just chilling,

00:17:27:29 –> 00:17:29:06
Selfies. No. Oh.

00:17:30:02 –> 00:17:44:05
That’s just why it’s turned, because he’s a millennial and I’m just using it anyway of, of the deer and the barrel of my gun and everything. And it was kinda, I mean, it was fun. And anyway, he stood up and these open site muzzle orders, I mean, they’re not easy. Like, and

00:17:44:05 –> 00:17:46:11
We’re mid forties, let’s face it dude. Not dude.

00:17:46:11 –> 00:17:56:17
I’m looking at the site and it’s focused. And then I look at the, the deer and it’s focused. Then I look at the site, look at the deer, look at the site, look at the deer line, and then squeeze the trigger. Because they’re not both in focus. Yeah,

00:17:56:17 –> 00:17:57:01
They’re not.

00:17:57:05 –> 00:18:11:14
It’s just tough, you know? Well, and they, and they give special provisions to guys that are like us, that are losing our ability to see. But we, like we’ve talked about, they shouldn’t even give ’em provisions. Hey, if you’re, if you can’t see through an open site, you don’t use a site anymore. Just

00:18:11:14 –> 00:18:12:16
Apply. You apply for the rifle hunt.

00:18:12:16 –> 00:18:12:28
Don’t. Yes.

00:18:13:10 –> 00:18:14:25
I mean, I’m, I mean, if you have a,

00:18:15:19 –> 00:18:18:19
When the Indians couldn’t pull a bow back, they didn’t bow hunt.

00:18:19:00 –> 00:18:21:19
They skinned and fleshed. They didn’t killed or whatever. Go

00:18:21:19 –> 00:18:24:28
Kill or just ate whatever the young killed, young little whipper snapper. Someone else

00:18:24:28 –> 00:18:26:28
Killed it. They brought it back, fleshed it and took care of

00:18:26:28 –> 00:18:31:17
It. Right. So I mean, that’s being rough. But I mean, just saying, just saying kind

00:18:31:17 –> 00:18:39:00
Of like, well that’s another topic on whether scope muzzle loaders in Utah and some of these other, how hard they’re being on deer. That’s another topic.

00:18:39:09 –> 00:19:00:24
Well, to let’s just go there for a quick sec since you brought it up. We’re talking about a second rifle hunt. A rifle hunt in September for elk and deer and everything else. ’cause these muzz orders are unbelievable. Yeah. They’re shooting 500 yards. Fairly easy. 400 everybody, three 50 no problem. Yes. With scope muzz loader. So, and 300 grain bullets going 24 feet.

00:19:00:26 –> 00:19:36:05
It’s different. It’s a different, it’s changed the way people apply for certain hunts. You know, some of these muzzle lit hunts are way more desirable than rifle hunts flat out. I mean, I, I don’t, I couldn’t tell you one deer hunt in Utah would take the rifle on over the muzzle. Right. Just to get a go first. Right. And to hunt more of a prec scouted deer versus like on the ponds, you get deer that move and you’re hunting areas that, you know, deer are coming to versus one deer that you’ve watched all year waiting, waiting for. Right. So the open sight muzzle are days, there’s a lot of people that had apprehension when you had to Yeah, I don’t really want to go that route. Okay,

00:19:36:21 –> 00:19:41:10
Well a that helps drawing ons b that helps deer and elk live. Yeah. And

00:19:41:10 –> 00:19:42:02
Not that, not that.

00:19:42:16 –> 00:19:43:07
And we, we people

00:19:43:07 –> 00:20:08:14
Have bad hunts, but just, man, there’s been some changes. And that’s been one that I think you just apply it to the Utah general hunt. I mean, how many more deer are getting whacked on a muzzle hunt now? And, and we’re not, this is, don’t take it the wrong way. We’re not on a crusade to ban scope muzzle lit in Utah. We’re just talking about certain things that seem minor. They can have a pretty big influence on a huge I taking especially top end deer, or in some cases like general seasoned deer numbers of deer off hand.

00:20:08:14 –> 00:20:22:05
Well, and at the end of the day, if you wanna maintain a certain quality, then you’ve gotta reduce tags. And so at the end of the day, you could say that the advancements in technology can have a negative impact on the number of tags issued. I mean, that we, it it

00:20:22:09 –> 00:20:25:06
Or, or the quality is just not gonna be what you want it to be. That’s

00:20:25:06 –> 00:20:41:02
Right. Take your pick. And, and, and I’m, I’m an, I’m a huge advocate of the deer in the elk just because I want to hunt freaking monsters. We know a deer that got freaking wounded that’s whatever, six 50 with a muzzle order that would’ve otherwise lived or not been shot at. And I mean, let’s be honest. Exactly.

00:20:41:02 –> 00:20:44:13
And a lot, a lot more than one. Yeah. I mean, just stories. But that’s just an

00:20:44:13 –> 00:20:44:25
Example.

00:20:45:02 –> 00:21:02:11
Yes. I mean, and for everyone you know and hear about or that gets kind of traction in the underground hunting world, if you want to call it that. There’s others that, that nobody tells you about. Yes. That’s so when they were loing something at six 50 with a muzzle loader, that’s arking like a Yes. You know,

00:21:02:27 –> 00:21:19:25
We’re not saying, like Adam said, it, it’s just hard hunting has taken a change, you know, with all the technology and, and stuff. We’re not even bringing up. There’s, there’s advancements out there that are beyond their mind blowing. And we’re not even talking about those necessarily. But just that there’s

00:21:19:25 –> 00:21:24:12
A law in a hunter’s favor if you want to keep adding to your gear list.

00:21:24:23 –> 00:21:43:11
And it just feels like we’re taking on this, let’s call it a democratic mindset, that everybody’s entitled to whatever they’ve scouted. I scouted that dear. I’m entitled to it, or I’m entitled to have an opportunity I can’t see through my open sight. So I’m entitled to use the scope. I can’t use a bow. So I’m entitled to a crossbow permit.

00:21:43:15 –> 00:21:51:11
My shoulder’s been giving me a little trouble this summer. I’m gonna get a note from my doctor. And really, it’s not a, not a long term ailment or it’s not a Yeah.

00:21:51:17 –> 00:22:43:10
You know, well, there’s doctor’s notes being issued for leg cramps. I don’t know. Yeah. I mean, we know guys that are getting doctor’s notes for nothing. Yeah. And so anyway, it, this all has a negative impact along with, you know, Adam, you’ve got a team of guys that we’re, we’re, you know, helping on your sheep hunt or whatever. You add up all of these things and we love it. Like you and I talked about it, that’s normal. We wanna hunt with our friends, we wanna hunt with our friends. And, and it’s more special. Some guys are saying, well, do it the hard way. Go be by yourself. Well, people that hunt by themselves might not have a lot of friends. I mean, we wanna hunt with our friends. Right. But having said that, you’ve got teams of guides that are being hired for special tags on top of crossbow permits, on top of muzz or, you know, scope m orders and stuff. And it all, it’s just all taking a toll. And we’re all, and we all have those things. I have a scope muzzle order. We all have those things. Yeah.

00:22:43:14 –> 00:23:01:07
You know, but it’s pretty tough on, it makes you realize when you get a tag, like you described back to bring it back to Nevada, man, it is a primitive, it is, you know, a hundred, 150 maybe yards. And it’s still not a guarantee. I mean, 141 yards is not a chip shot with muzz loader.

00:23:02:27 –> 00:23:17:02
So I had, I had a, I had a good client. He’s a good guy, but he did miss a freaking monster. Probably maybe the best deer in, in the state and, you know, at a hundred forty one one yards at open sight and, and something

00:23:17:02 –> 00:23:18:29
You or I or anybody could do that’s, yeah.

00:23:19:05 –> 00:23:25:20
I had a couple strokes over it. And maybe even a little heartburn and puked once or twice, you know, but, and now you go back to work,

00:23:25:27 –> 00:23:28:24
But back to your deer. We, we digress now back to, to

00:23:28:24 –> 00:23:43:13
Your open sight 20 yards. Freaking knocked it over 125 yards. He gets up, he feeds, feeds away from me a little bit. Finally, I keep thinking I’m gonna squeeze, keep trying to, you know, just as you’re doing, trying to make this perfect shot anyway. Hammered him flops. Well, you know, muzz, LERs, they don’t shock at a

00:23:43:25 –> 00:23:44:26
So to speak. They smack,

00:23:45:12 –> 00:23:57:19
They kind of like a slow rock going through ’em. Right. He’s flopping, flop and flop. And I’m like, I’m hammer him again. Flop and flop. And I get closer, hammer him again. Flop, flop, flop. I hammer him again. Flop. You

00:23:57:19 –> 00:24:00:12
Take all your slugs out and you can use ’em again. Yeah. You

00:24:00:12 –> 00:24:12:01
Feel Yeah. I could use him again. So anyway, and they were all great shots, like great shots. It just takes a minute for ’em to expire. And I want him to die now. You know, I don’t want to track him 14 miles. I want him to die. Now

00:24:12:09 –> 00:24:13:16
Let’s talk about the buck.

00:24:14:05 –> 00:24:24:10
So we walk up to the deer. He ends up being 36 inches. He’s a 2 21 gross buck, 10 inches of trash aside. Basically a 200 inch frame just with one eye guard missing. No

00:24:24:10 –> 00:24:28:14
Eye guard. Yeah. Really no eye guard. Yep. You know? Yep. On the one side at all. Yep.

00:24:28:15 –> 00:24:41:10
Just one of those kind of deer. You just go, wow. You know, he was a, he’s a special deer. Got a little bit of dried velvet. I’m a lot of character that way. Kinda like one of those deer that tried to come out of the velvet, but has nothing to rub his antlers on.

00:24:42:01 –> 00:24:42:10
He’s

00:24:42:10 –> 00:25:08:18
Rocks. Rocks and stuff. And so he is really light antler and dry, crappy velvet, you know, but it, but I love him for that. And old deer, his, I showed you, his front teeth are freaking, they’re not just worn like top to bottom. They’re like worn on the side, you know, with, I mean, those are, that’s a major cavity. Like it was, he needed some fillings for sure. Yeah. And then his, his back molars, I mean, freaking down in the gum. Huge old dish, dish out.

00:25:08:23 –> 00:25:10:19
Awesome. But yeah. Yeah.

00:25:11:00 –> 00:26:10:06
He’s just kind of down, living in a harsh environment. You know, you have all the respect in the world for some of these old deer. They go through a lot and then you get to put your hands on one once in a while and on a draw tag. Couldn’t ask for more. It just, I’m just, guess we go back to this, you know, I’ve, I bought landowner tags in Nevada. I love Nevada for a lot of reasons, but you and I have talked about it. And, and Wyatt two, like, we are not taking advantage of the tags that are given us and given meaning easy to draw or our dedicated hunter program here in Utah. Our general stuff, easy to draw tag in Nevada. Like I, I’m, I’m not sure how many more landlord tags I really wanna buy. Like, I mean, I wanna, it’s, there’s good animals if you spend time, time is the key. I’m tired of having too many tags. I have too many tags. My kids have tags and, and I feel stressed. I want to just, now I’m just saying it now, when we’re right in the middle of lap season, I’ll be applying for some freaking weird COOs deer unit in New Mexico. An

00:26:10:06 –> 00:26:12:04
Antelope and forest stage. A hundred percent.

00:26:12:13 –> 00:26:16:24
The antelope that we saw in Wyoming after getting our butt kicked during deer. I mean, I’m gonna be there. Okay.

00:26:17:01 –> 00:26:17:13
Unreal.

00:26:17:29 –> 00:26:20:11
And, and then I’m gonna get there and I’m gonna go, why am I here?

00:26:21:03 –> 00:26:22:11
These are all two points,

00:26:22:16 –> 00:26:25:19
But they’re fork keys with a little dropper here and there. Maybe

00:26:26:07 –> 00:26:28:04
A little three quarter inch nub off the back.

00:26:28:28 –> 00:26:30:22
So yeah, it’s where I’m going

00:26:30:22 –> 00:27:22:17
With it. But, well, I agree. And I think, I don’t know, our eyes get big during application season. We’re all, we’re all that way. But you know, for me, my desert sheep hunt is kind of been governing a lot of my applications the last couple of years at least. And now that’ll be gone that I was a top point holder. So I had to kind of apply with that in mind. Now, now I’m not, but, but I totally agree with making more with what you got or can get than trying to get everything in the world. And sometimes you’re running yourself ragged. And I realized for the masses, or for the majority of our members or listeners, getting too many tags is not the problem. But sometimes we can get, you know, a general season in Idaho and a general season in Utah and then we draw one tag and we always usually go to the draw tag areas and don’t hunt our generals. And sometimes that’s where some of the biggest bucks would’ve been found. So it’s like the, the

00:27:22:17 –> 00:27:23:10
Biggest bucks get the

00:27:23:12 –> 00:27:25:00
Wyatt, the Bucks kill them.

00:27:25:08 –> 00:27:25:14
The

00:27:25:14 –> 00:27:27:02
Bucks. Like the handfuls

00:27:27:18 –> 00:27:30:22
General season units together in Utah produced, you know, some giant

00:27:30:22 –> 00:27:36:22
Deer more than Henry stuff. Yeah. Oaks Vernon freaking San. Oh, now there’s a special, well, and you gotta

00:27:36:22 –> 00:28:01:12
Real realize there’s a couple of those. But I mean, you’re, you’re also talking about units that have six to 10 archery and six to 10 muzzle lit tags. So I mean, we’re talking about units with a thousand archery tags and you know, a lot of, lot of nice buck. So overall point taken. We’ve made some, I think verbal. I don’t think anything’s in writing in terms of our resolutions for, for 2020. We should put

00:28:01:14 –> 00:28:07:13
’em in writing. We should put ’em in writing. Don’t, I’m so tired of being gone so much and killing. Okay.

00:28:07:22 –> 00:28:23:10
We’ll get Jen in, get Jen in here and get your stuff in writing right now in front of her. Right now. I’m not quite to that point with writing. We can talk about concepts and, and, and pulling the reins back slightly. I agree in the concepts. Conceptually I’m on board. But I love

00:28:23:10 –> 00:28:26:23
It. Like, we went to Wyoming. Wyatt, take us, take us to Wyoming. Well,

00:28:26:23 –> 00:28:37:00
We, we got over there on Wyoming, you know, just a unit. We were more or less just trying to learn or figure out what was actually going on over there and spent, spent a lot of time looking at not very many deer.

00:28:37:23 –> 00:28:39:18
How about hardly any deer? Yeah.

00:28:40:13 –> 00:28:45:06
Hardly any deer. I guess the way we could like, like we could use that exact term right there. Hardly any deer.

00:28:45:28 –> 00:29:04:10
My, my kid, a couple, my kids killed bucks, but it turned out, and they’re, and they’re nice bucks for for what? For my kids. Right. They were the best deer we saw. Okay. And they left, go back to school and we grind it out, Sean and I, and we’re like, and you? And we’re like, no,

00:29:04:10 –> 00:29:04:26
There’s nothing better.

00:29:05:05 –> 00:29:13:17
Oh, we’re gonna kill nothing. Yeah. Than nothing. Air ball it. It’s like, it was so bad. Yeah.

00:29:13:25 –> 00:29:14:04
Yeah.

00:29:14:17 –> 00:29:22:12
I was, I turned to my kid and I’m like, I feel like if it, if WT wasn’t here and you weren’t here, I’d probably drive home. And he goes, oh, I would be doing, and you said the same thing.

00:29:23:15 –> 00:29:46:02
Yeah. You just think something’s gonna give. And you know, some of those hunts, you know, if you, you’re not in the G or H has a lot of deer, you deal with a lot of people in places like that. You d draw some of the other, you just call ’em limited entry units in, in Wyoming, we’ve said it, I don’t know how many times on Wyoming podcast, there’s just nothing that’s consistently still or knocking it outta the park when it comes out you.

00:29:46:02 –> 00:29:46:23
Hundred 1, 28.

00:29:46:26 –> 00:29:50:07
Yeah. But I mean, that one’s just numbers late, but numbers

00:29:50:13 –> 00:29:52:18
And high numbers of 1 61 70 bucks.

00:29:52:19 –> 00:30:08:02
Yes. That’s, that’s what you’re doing. You don’t, great. And occasionally a a couple get better than that, but the most of the limited entry units in Wyoming are just, they just can’t sustain general season hunting. Or they’ll get crushed. They’ll kill all the deer. Yeah. I mean, I mean that’s an over

00:30:08:02 –> 00:30:09:04
The counter for non-residents.

00:30:09:09 –> 00:30:20:07
Yes. Or over the counter for residents. But so they make ’em a draw just to regulate it to some extent. That doesn’t mean they’re limited entry. Like Utah has five or six elementary units and they’re all

00:30:20:13 –> 00:30:21:26
Managed for legit big deer.

00:30:22:06 –> 00:30:22:29
Yeah. You know.

00:30:23:07 –> 00:30:34:22
Well, and what we did by going up there a I will say this, it was probably the worst year in a decade up there with, you know, from everybody that’s hunted at many times, times over

00:30:34:22 –> 00:30:35:22
Locals, whatever. Yeah. You,

00:30:35:27 –> 00:30:39:12
You know, sheds videos, deer, we know they

00:30:39:13 –> 00:30:43:07
Had a lot of the weather. We’d been at like a lot of the high pressure stuff. Right. Not a lot of storms.

00:30:43:18 –> 00:30:55:07
This fair weather. Cor ruined us. Yeah. I mean, no migration, no nothing. Nothing. But we did have a member, you know, I talked to him in the motel and, and he went out and more

00:30:55:07 –> 00:30:57:00
Or less a pep pep talk, wasn’t it? Yeah.

00:30:57:00 –> 00:31:00:20
He says, Hey, thanks for the pep talk and we’re gonna probably have him on the podcast visit, wasn’t

00:31:00:20 –> 00:31:03:22
He? Oh yeah. About to turn and go home and you’re like, just

00:31:03:22 –> 00:31:23:17
Stick it to the end. Yeah. I mean he just, yeah, just basically like, Carter, you talked to me about this, I wasted a bunch of points, you know, gas money, I’m here, what, you know, what do you think? I’m like, well, I’m here too, Ali, am I here? I got kids, my entire family’s here. Why? It’s here. Like we, we we’re here with you under, you know, we’re all going

00:31:23:17 –> 00:31:24:00
Through

00:31:24:05 –> 00:32:19:06
The same pain and suffering. And anyway, at the end of the let’s, the next day, it was the last day, the last day of the hunt, he smoked a mid one eighties buck. And he’s like, you followed me in. And I’m like, yes, yes. You’re, you know, and he goes, and, and he says right there, right behind my truck, I freaking smashed him. And I was like, well, I went by you and went down into this dark, kind of a deeper steeper canyon to get possibly a migrating buck to come in. And his, his was, his was migrating dear. And, and he got lucky and I didn’t. And that’s just the way it was ever. And he says, you heard my shot? And I’m like, oh yeah, I heard your shot. And so anyway, super thrilled with it. But at the end of the day, I guess our point was we just try a lot of things. We eat a lot of tags. It was a down year. I’d go again in a heartbeat, probably get my butt kicked twice. But we learned a lot of things. Seen antelope are off the charts. Tell am I lying? Why? No,

00:32:19:06 –> 00:32:19:12
No.

00:32:19:19 –> 00:32:25:20
Unreal. I’ve never seen anything like it as far as antelope. It was crazy numbers. Never numbers of books. Yeah. Huh.

00:32:25:20 –> 00:32:30:20
And then I’d get sheep pictures from you, Wyatt, Jason both out she moose, the truck Sean,

00:32:30:21 –> 00:32:32:05
About smashed a moose on the highway.

00:32:32:09 –> 00:32:34:11
That was probably the highlight of the trip was the sheep pictures.

00:32:34:13 –> 00:32:36:12
Oh yeah. It was mean. We didn’t, it was good

00:32:36:19 –> 00:33:10:29
Dude. That, that unit is, well anyway, I don’t wanna go there too far. But what I was gonna say is it was a great learning experience for all these species. Just, just being out and learning and, and experiencing. Like I’d go there for antelope in three seconds. Yeah. Although it was high private, a lot of private where those bucks were, but some of these bucks were clear up in these burns up high on the mountain. You know, maybe that was just our weather, maybe we were just dealing with no weather and they were up there. I don’t know a lot to learn yet. So that sucked. Adam, let’s talk about New Mexico elk.

00:33:11:21 –> 00:33:34:20
Well, there’s a bright spot for me of, of my ear. I mean, I, I could, I mean I, I don’t wanna allude that it’s been a rough year, but I’ve had a couple grinders, you know, with some sheet hunts, but one of my personal hunts. But, but also a couple clients that have been grinders. So this is one of those hunts I didn’t have, I didn’t have time to scout, I didn’t have any time to scout. No

00:33:34:29 –> 00:33:41:05
Full schedule like we’ve been talking about. That’s right. We’re gonna get out some brass and etch it that we’re not gonna do this to ourselves again. That’s right. So,

00:33:41:05 –> 00:34:16:01
You know, I actually pulled the tag through the guide draw mainly because, you know, let’s face it, drawing odds are better and drawing a great elk tag New Mexico is hard. Yeah. You know, my Septembers didn’t, you know, because of my likely drawing my sheep tag, I didn’t wanna get tied up with an archery tag. That generally requires a lot more days. These rifle tags are five days. Take it, leave it, go down there for five days, you’re done, you’re on. I just got lucky and pulled a great tag and had Jordan from the premium hunts crew down there to help me out and low density elk unit

00:34:16:16 –> 00:34:18:05
One of these new early rifles. Yeah.

00:34:19:01 –> 00:35:04:06
And we, we saw some bulls the first day. I, I actually didn’t even get down there till the day before the hunt, but, but he’d been doing a lot of work there prior to me getting there. Him, him, some of his family. Long story short, opening day, we saw, saw a couple of bulls. One bulls broken up pretty good. Two first and second, broke on one side, soared on the other. He probably would’ve been a 3 50, 360 caliber bull. But he just was, you know, he just kind of had a frame of that. But not, not nothing to get him there. Another bull that was probably a three, maybe 60 bull, big frame, wide long beam, but just didn’t have tides. Had weak fifths and kind of weak thirds, but just a big frame looking bull. But that night we ended up glassing up this bull that I ended up killing.

00:35:05:04 –> 00:35:42:29
And you know, we had about eight or nine cows, something like that. And big top end, big fronts. And I mean, it was obvious. I mean that’s a bull you probably better shoot, you know, down here. But he was in a spot we couldn’t get to that night. And basically just watched him tell dark. Well he went over ridge probably an hour before dark and never came back. So we figured we had an idea where he’d be the next morning he’d moved probably, I don’t know, half a mile, something like that got on him. And anyway, second day of the hunt, beded him down and got in there 510 yards and shot him till the four legs were prone on the ground. That’s what they tell you to do on elk. What does that

00:35:42:29 –> 00:35:49:00
Mean? What does that mean? That means how many rounds? Five. Whoa. I didn’t know that. I’ll

00:35:49:00 –> 00:35:49:29
Bet they were you

00:35:50:00 –> 00:35:50:14
Lashing.

00:35:50:14 –> 00:35:53:00
I’d like to know. Oh, just kept, just slapping it.

00:35:53:04 –> 00:35:55:29
I mean only that you, you had to get into your pouch on your

00:35:56:01 –> 00:35:58:02
1 1 1. Yeah. I had four in the gun.

00:35:58:09 –> 00:35:59:24
You did? Which gun did you use?

00:36:00:03 –> 00:36:01:28
Red Rock. Seven. And them,

00:36:02:05 –> 00:36:03:11
It’ll hold four. It’ll

00:36:03:11 –> 00:36:05:00
Hold, i I feed one every time when I start

00:36:05:02 –> 00:36:08:26
Shooting this’s that end, it’ll hold three down low. Yeah. So my magnums only hold three down low three. Okay.

00:36:08:27 –> 00:36:15:02
Okay. So I had four and I had, I had one ready to go. But it, it’s elk. Right. And you don’t, not proud.

00:36:15:02 –> 00:36:18:04
Same thing is my dear, I’m not, I don’t care. I’m not proud. These don’t

00:36:18:04 –> 00:36:27:02
Wanna shock kill. I don’t. And he, he just locked first shot just locked up and you could hear, I could hear it smack him and I could tell, and the second shot locked up

00:36:27:23 –> 00:36:28:10
And you’re like,

00:36:28:14 –> 00:36:31:08
And, and then the third, I’m like, I’m gonna go because it’s, I’m

00:36:31:08 –> 00:36:32:02
Windy straight for the head.

00:36:32:13 –> 00:36:35:07
Now I’m going center mass. Not that’s later.

00:36:35:23 –> 00:36:38:12
Oh, oh yeah, that’s right. I forgot. Okay, keep going.

00:36:38:25 –> 00:37:18:12
So that third, third, and I could tell, I’m like, he’s hurt bad. He probably is dead. But now I’m just, I’m putting it in the center of his body now. ’cause I figured I’m tight to the shoulder somewhere, which I end up being. And so that second shot, and I could see it just right in the center of him, like I got one through his liver or something. But he’s just standing there, he’s wobbling. And the fourth shot, he drops like a like rock ton of crap. Just a ton of crap. And I’m like, okay, we’re done. And you know, I’m getting it empty out and I’m looking over there and he is thrashing. He’s, you know, I’m just watching with my naked eyes 510 yards. You know, he didn’t move anywhere in those shots. Didn’t move. I don’t know that I’ve ever shot an elk with a rifle like that that just locked

00:37:18:12 –> 00:37:18:18
Up.

00:37:18:20 –> 00:37:37:24
Didn’t even like run. Of course they didn’t know we were there. He just got out of his bed to tend a cow and turned broadside and you know, it opened up on him. But pretty soon he’s got his front legs up underneath him and his back. He’s wobbling. I shot him again and he went down. I mean, that was it. But, okay. I mean all, all five shots drilled him

00:37:38:04 –> 00:37:40:17
But split the skull plate. No. Oh, okay.

00:37:40:22 –> 00:37:43:24
No, but the fourth shot since you brought it up, Mr. Carter.

00:37:44:28 –> 00:38:13:12
And if, if you see it on my Instagram, you might see a little little thing on his bur. But I hit him. So on that fourth shot, he, he was actually pretty sick, so he turned it, his, I don’t know if he was turning, he wasn’t really licking his side, but he was turned back like, yeah, my side and shoulders hurting right here. And I remember telling myself, don’t shoot him in the face. I remember ’cause his whole head has turned back right over his shoulder. And I’m like, don’t shoot him in the face. Well, I missed his face, but I shut him right in the base of the antler right there.

00:38:13:21 –> 00:38:15:05
And it just blew his brain out.

00:38:15:14 –> 00:38:24:18
No, it dropped him, but it didn’t go, it didn’t even hit go into his no way skull. Oh, just right in the antler and out the backside. Blew a little antler missing and that’s it.

00:38:25:13 –> 00:38:25:19
Oh.

00:38:25:23 –> 00:38:37:23
But that dropped him in his tracks. But that, but then he got up sick, you know, and, and the fifth show did it. But I’m not a, i I can run the action pretty fast and I, that’s

00:38:37:23 –> 00:38:38:10
What s do for

00:38:38:13 –> 00:38:46:17
Well, well, and I, and I’m not, I don’t know, I I’ve, I’ve got a clients, I’ve got other people that if they think they got a fatal shot, they don’t wanna shoot anymore. Well

00:38:46:17 –> 00:38:48:22
No, it’s a saving, you know, it’s like, what are you saving?

00:38:48:28 –> 00:38:49:06
I don’t

00:38:49:06 –> 00:38:51:18
Know. You’re into this hunt. How many thousands of dollars. Well,

00:38:51:18 –> 00:39:11:22
And it, and it’s different on a sheep or a sheep cape. They’re thin hide and you can blow burgers. You may blow ’em up, but on an elk or a moose, I mean, I shot my moose four times and he was dead the first three. But the fourth shot I, you know. Oh yeah. Didn’t want him to get him into the thick stuff. ’cause then it’s two hours of chopping trees down before you can even get in and take a picture. Yeah.

00:39:12:05 –> 00:39:13:28
So all the while looking around for a griz.

00:39:14:01 –> 00:39:29:12
Yeah, that’s right. So anyway, it was, it was great. Straight six point and 3 81. 3 81. It was great. But long beans, jeez. Like 59 and seven on the one. I couldn’t, we could, we measured it twice thinking he might hit 60, but we didn’t quite get 60 outta that beans. Your

00:39:29:12 –> 00:39:31:18
Best. Let’s see, you killed one on the Dutton.

00:39:31:22 –> 00:39:35:29
Little better than that. He had extras. Gross couple extras. This is a straight six, so Yeah. Oh,

00:39:35:29 –> 00:39:39:00
He’s gorgeous. Great. And that was a gift, like that’s a draw

00:39:39:01 –> 00:40:14:06
Tag. Those are just no tag, no points. I mean in New Mexico. So just, that’s what we say as a gift gift to draw tag gift to, you know, go down there and find a great bull to shoot. I was, you know, either gonna shoot a really nice bull or just hunt in five days and come home and not shoot one. That was, that was my plan. But anyway, I appreciate Jordan and his help. He hadn’t seen that specific bull, but he knew where the cows and all the elk and that were. And in that unit with low numbers, you’ve hunted some of those units. Jason, if you know a little bit of part of the unit Yeah. With low elk densities. We’re kind of an epicenter of cows. That’s areas to be looking. Yeah. Yeah.

00:40:14:11 –> 00:40:34:25
Well and that’s an also, when you got low tag, you got low animal densities, you’ve got low tag numbers, you get low tag numbers. Sometimes you have a giant. And that’s, I love those, I love those kind of areas. Now I went to one of the best units in the state, 16 b early archery, I forgot. And it was a grinder. It was

00:40:35:02 –> 00:40:36:04
Hot. You well, well, and

00:40:36:23 –> 00:40:37:17
To tee that up 90

00:40:37:17 –> 00:40:44:13
Degrees, you, you elected hunt the first of the seventh because you had, you had Muzz, Muzz, Nevada, mu Nevada.

00:40:44:19 –> 00:40:46:29
And I have to guide a client and then do my own. And so there was just

00:40:46:29 –> 00:40:50:11
No option. It was just that’s your time to go. Yes. And it is what it is. And

00:40:50:11 –> 00:40:51:14
It was, it was kind late season opportunity.

00:40:51:18 –> 00:40:53:04
Unusably hot. Yeah,

00:40:53:09 –> 00:41:25:28
It was hot. It was, anyway, went in there, got dropped off. It was a drop camp and it sucked. But we did see a gr we did see a 360 type bowl. And, and I was looking for something like something special like what you killed or just, you just want that kind of, that next, next level bull. And, and we didn’t find one and we hiked our guts out and, and worked hard. And so anyway, ate that tag. But I learned a lot, you know, I’d do it again. I think it was just the year I do, I I that second archery is definitely better. Yeah. I I’ve done well on the first archery

00:41:26:08 –> 00:41:52:28
You have and that’s the trade off some years that first archery, it starts raining. Yeah. And they’re going nuts. And it’s just a flip of the coin. Yes. Always has a lot better drawing odds than the second hunt. Everybody wants that 15th to the 24th of September if you can get it. Yes. I didn’t think you’d pick it. I know I’d pick it. But you sacrifice drawing odds. I mean the tags you’ve drawn archery have always, or anything that you’ve hunted earlier. You killed that 360 bull on the early hunt in the

00:41:52:28 –> 00:41:53:00
First

00:41:53:01 –> 00:41:54:00
Yeah. 10 days.

00:41:54:18 –> 00:42:24:17
I know. Anyway. I know. And so anyway, but it was a, it was a good learning experience. I probably won’t learn much from it, you know, I’ll probably do it, I’d do it again if it was offered again. But you know, having said that, went in there and did learn the unit, saw a great mulder Mulder were cheaters in lines. Whoa. Yeah, I didn’t tell you about that. Videoed it, it was a legit deer. That’s a big deer. Yeah. It saw a big co deer too. But anyway, yeah, that’s just like our, kinda like our Wyoming hunt wire. I mean, you just learn, you learn,

00:42:24:22 –> 00:42:29:23
You pick up something from, from a tag eat even, you know, whether it’s even on that species. Yeah.

00:42:30:14 –> 00:42:35:26
I’d go there again. I only touched a 20th of the unit, like, you

00:42:35:26 –> 00:42:36:23
Know. Yeah. That’s the one that,

00:42:37:13 –> 00:42:37:22
Geez

00:42:38:16 –> 00:42:42:19
You. It’d take years and years of hunting that with horses and really, you know, and

00:42:42:20 –> 00:42:49:19
I hate horses. Yeah. I hate ’em if you’re not used to riding them. You, you rode ’em on your sheep hunt. Yeah. Yeah. Did you love them?

00:42:49:27 –> 00:42:50:19
No, I don’t.

00:42:51:23 –> 00:42:56:17
I mean, you bow-legged, they always give you the saddle. That’s not Well I was already, I mean, they give you the client saddle

00:42:56:19 –> 00:42:57:08
I’d already got and

00:42:57:08 –> 00:43:07:08
That’s a grinder I’d already. And their personal saddles, they’ve got, they’ve got stirrups that are forward facing and all these things. I mean, they’re just nicer saddles. And you’re in there just you’re, you’re in their bow legs,

00:43:07:12 –> 00:43:11:28
Your acls and MCLs. You might as well be ruptured because your, your legs don’t

00:43:11:28 –> 00:43:47:10
Work. And you know, do you know these, these guides are just, they’re grinning the whole time. They’re just like, you think you’re tough? Get on this saddle. You know? And you, I love it. It’s just like I’m do the same thing. I get it. I get it. Laugh, laugh, laugh. Hold your bow. I hold my bow for freaking 10 miles on a horseback. You know, just, you don’t think it sucks. Mile one, mile two, mile three. You’re tired of that bow. But anyway, great experience. All fun, all fun and games ate that tag two that bring us John, you were hunting a freaking stud deer.

00:43:47:20 –> 00:43:53:06
Oh, you know, earlier we talked about these deer aren’t living, they are with me

00:43:54:15 –> 00:43:55:10
Scope muzzle.

00:43:56:00 –> 00:44:00:04
Yeah. But I, I tried to get my kids on them during the muzzle loader. You, I you

00:44:00:08 –> 00:44:03:29
Got outta the year award. Even if your wife didn’t issue it to you. I’ll give you one.

00:44:05:00 –> 00:44:05:25
She’s like, you’re never here.

00:44:05:25 –> 00:44:07:13
That deer would be dead if you

00:44:08:02 –> 00:44:38:29
Like. I got Kate on it and it was 150 yards I think. And just, she couldn’t get it in the scope and Yeah. And shoot it. But, but it was great. You know, we had a great time and I learned a lot on the archery. I’ve never spent that much time on the archery and just actually learned a lot from listening to the podcasts and listening to you guys, you know, and what you’re doing and, and found. Yeah. You, you sit there in the sun all day. That’s what it takes sometimes. And, and was able to get in really close on several occasions You

00:44:38:29 –> 00:44:40:02
Did that sat all day.

00:44:40:02 –> 00:44:48:08
Yeah. All day. Just wow. You know, no water in the sun and thought sucked. Wish I had, wish I had another water. Wish I had water. Yeah. You know,

00:44:48:16 –> 00:44:58:10
But, and that time of year we’re, we’re literally the four corners of the earth. Everybody in the office this summer. Wyatt, you’re guiding muzzle. Did you head a muzzle?

00:44:58:22 –> 00:44:59:11
Gon archery,

00:44:59:28 –> 00:45:04:18
Ponts archery on, on the archery part. And then you had a Pont muzzle later, didn’t you? Ponzel

00:45:04:25 –> 00:45:05:04
Only

00:45:05:04 –> 00:45:05:16
Around San

00:45:05:16 –> 00:45:09:25
Juan. And then I’ve got sheep guys. Then you’re on San Juan Elk and Jason’s, you’re doing your shit. I mean,

00:45:10:21 –> 00:45:10:28
It,

00:45:11:14 –> 00:45:36:06
We, we, that’s why we talk about this is a rarity to be doing this po We haven’t seen each other for weeks, you know, and so it’s, it’s unfortunate sometimes because we, you know, and this is a general season tag, so it’s like, if John would’ve drawn the Henry Mountains, we’d all carved out time like everybody did for me a few years ago when I had my chance. I don’t know why we do that. But that deer’s, I mean he’s, you know, maybe not a true Henry Mountains giant, but he’s a freaking what mean big deer on a general, it’s

00:45:36:06 –> 00:45:39:05
220 mostly frame. I’m talking Is that what you’re talking

00:45:39:09 –> 00:45:40:28
I’m No, no. Mine. I’m talking John.

00:45:41:17 –> 00:45:43:06
I’m talking John’s is talking

00:45:43:19 –> 00:45:44:06
Cheaters.

00:45:44:08 –> 00:45:50:13
Oh, it’s a big deer. I mean, but what I’m saying is we’d carved time out, but somehow we’ve, we’ve all got our own generals. We’re this and that

00:45:50:13 –> 00:45:56:08
And the other. We’re the general, we’re not putting any, any emphasis on it. It’s, it’s valueless because it’s been given to us our whole life.

00:45:56:08 –> 00:45:59:01
Yeah. We got lifetime license. We pick what we want every year. It’s,

00:45:59:06 –> 00:46:04:19
That being said, I don’t have one this year. First year, my entire life I remember not having a Utah general tag. Oh

00:46:04:21 –> 00:46:09:12
Wow. Well, if you had employed Epic application services, we’d have had your three dedicated points

00:46:09:12 –> 00:46:10:13
By Yeah. Geez.

00:46:12:21 –> 00:46:13:04
Little,

00:46:13:04 –> 00:46:13:28
Little disappointed.

00:46:14:11 –> 00:46:18:16
Well, next year you, you’ll have one, you’ll have one that one point will pay off. Two.

00:46:18:29 –> 00:46:19:06
Huh?

00:46:19:20 –> 00:46:28:02
Two points. You came off dedicated and then you got a general Yep. You didn’t draw a general with one. No. So now you got another dedicated point. And maybe two general points. Two general

00:46:28:02 –> 00:46:28:08
Points.

00:46:28:12 –> 00:46:29:04
Limited entry

00:46:29:04 –> 00:46:33:20
0.0, limited entry points. I got a pile though, so we’ll see what happens.

00:46:34:13 –> 00:46:36:10
That’s a good point, Wyatt. Well

00:46:36:11 –> 00:46:54:06
Anyway, John, that’s, I mean, where I was going with that is that happens sometimes. I mean, you know, we, you know, literally we’re all up to here, Waterwise just at our nose, and, and that was a time, I dunno, Chris might have went out with you. I don’t even know if he could break free. I don’t know what he was

00:46:54:06 –> 00:46:57:07
Doing. Yeah, Chris did go with me one time and we were on a good deer with Kate again. Yeah.

00:46:57:17 –> 00:46:57:24
And

00:46:57:24 –> 00:47:02:20
Just, you know, just didn’t happen. But really close with her this morning. We’re on a great deer.

00:47:02:25 –> 00:47:05:00
This is the rifle hunt. Now we’re talking about, you’re

00:47:05:02 –> 00:47:07:11
Probably ready to go hunt the evening tonight. Yeah, we’re,

00:47:07:11 –> 00:47:07:23
We’re headed

00:47:07:23 –> 00:47:08:18
Back time. Visit it.

00:47:08:18 –> 00:47:44:11
Okay. But, but we’ll hurry this up. Yeah. Speaking of the podcast, I did have a, a guy hit me kill a deer and he was like, dude, you guys’ podcast, when you talked about stalking and not blowing ’em out, not believing the stock is over. Sometimes you break a stick on a stock or do whatever, and you think that the deer had to have blown out, like you were, you were clumsy or whatever. He says, I took it to the very last bit and even though the deer smelled me and I was within 40 yards, he waited till I was like 40 yards before he blew out. And I smoked him at 225 yards or something. He’s like, it’s a

00:47:44:11 –> 00:47:45:04
Rifle. Bernardino

00:47:45:07 –> 00:48:15:22
A rifle. And he said, because of the, and it was a second season Colorado, he says, because of the podcast I killed this year, it’s pretty awesome. My senate will do a little snapshot on it. Awesome. But anyway, kind of cool, you know, it’s yeah, fun. We learn from each other. We’re learning from members and you know, hopefully these podcasts are just another avenue of learning stuff. You know? Of course we have the Epic Outdoors magazine. That’s a hundred bucks a year. You getting nine issues. And we talk about all the state draw stuff, but can’t put everything we’re talking about in writing. You just can’t put it in writing. So we do the podcast.

00:48:16:01 –> 00:48:21:18
Well, and you got the ability to call us and consult with us throughout the year, which is very unique aspect to our business. It’s not just,

00:48:21:22 –> 00:48:22:05
Except

00:48:22:05 –> 00:48:22:29
For this time of year.

00:48:22:29 –> 00:48:27:19
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, during the hunts, don’t call right now.

00:48:27:25 –> 00:48:28:23
Now it’s hard. There’s a

00:48:28:23 –> 00:48:41:14
Lot of guys calling. You might get, you might not. I know. But let’s just say from December through summer. Yeah. And when you’re doing the planning and your application and how should I use my points and all that, that that’s what we do every day. That’s, that’s what we, you a hundred bucks goes forward.

00:48:41:17 –> 00:48:50:02
We’ve got some more hunts coming up. We’re gonna be hitting Colorado third season. Chris is over there second, like we talked about Jeff. He’s got his kids over

00:48:50:02 –> 00:48:52:00
There. Jeff, he’s crushing bucks with his boys, isn’t he? Crushing

00:48:52:00 –> 00:48:52:19
Bucks and crushing feet.

00:48:52:19 –> 00:48:54:04
Crushing feet. Sounds like, I

00:48:54:04 –> 00:48:58:14
Guess his kid. He dropped the tongue of a what? Side-by-side trailer on his kid’s foot something. I had him and

00:48:58:14 –> 00:48:59:22
Jack. Yeah. I

00:49:00:04 –> 00:49:01:01
He ended up ping it down.

00:49:02:15 –> 00:49:03:23
Yeah. I don’t know. Yeah.

00:49:04:08 –> 00:49:05:18
Poor that, that hap that’s just,

00:49:05:18 –> 00:49:16:04
These hunts with kids are fun. I mean, you just take for granted a lot of things of finding the deer in the scope, things like that. Fun. Fun. Well, so my 13 year old boy, first

00:49:16:04 –> 00:49:16:17
Time, right?

00:49:16:18 –> 00:49:26:19
Yeah. First time it is. Yeah. First time, first deer. He was like, my daughter’s a little picky. She’s like, I want three pointer better. Or it’s not even, I’m not even considering it. You know,

00:49:27:04 –> 00:49:29:23
He wants to be able to brag to the boys at school. I got a three

00:49:29:23 –> 00:49:54:22
Pointer, four. He’s like, I’ll shoot anything, dad, just let’s go. You know? So opening morning, we were on a three point and he, he went up in the mountain in the hills, and we were kind of seeing him through the cedars. I’m like, he’s gonna come out, we can shoot him. And then a spike came by him and he’s like, he’s got horns dad. You know, he smoked it and he walked within 50 yards. He smoked a smoked some awesome shot, smoked a spike.

00:49:54:26 –> 00:49:56:20
So was he just beside fun?

00:49:56:25 –> 00:50:00:02
Yeah. Just so fun. We cut it up and you know, he’s just eating

00:50:00:08 –> 00:50:01:24
The best meat you can eat. Probably.

00:50:01:24 –> 00:50:08:17
Yeah. But then I guess he’s allergic to something touches his eye. He, he’s, he’s got like deer hair on his hand, touches his eye.

00:50:09:03 –> 00:50:10:05
Wells shut, his face

00:50:10:05 –> 00:50:14:05
Was half swollen shut. Oh my God. Couldn’t see outta one side, just oh,

00:50:14:05 –> 00:50:15:18
Deer hair. It’s

00:50:15:18 –> 00:50:18:18
Crazy. Oh, that does happen to people. Yeah, it does.

00:50:18:28 –> 00:50:20:24
So now I’m like, yeah, with you we’re

00:50:20:24 –> 00:50:22:00
Better wear some gloves. Yeah.

00:50:22:21 –> 00:50:24:16
You need to like elk or antelope.

00:50:24:23 –> 00:50:24:28
Yeah,

00:50:25:29 –> 00:50:26:23
Totally allergic.

00:50:27:07 –> 00:51:06:00
Wow. Dang. Well that’s awesome. So it was fun. Well, you know, you could be like Sean. So he smokes an antelope in the, in Nevada earlier this year and, and it was a buck we were on. We knew about for a couple years. He came back not as, not as great this year. Antelope in parts of Nevada weren’t as good. They just weren’t. But anyway, he, he’s got a Colorado second tag, and today they’re off school. So I’m like, Hey Sean, why don’t we freaking run to Colorado and smash and grab a freaking buck? You know, he don’t want to go, he doesn’t think it’s that good a tag. And I’m like, really? You’re spoiled because this unit, they’ve killed Big Deer

00:51:06:00 –> 00:51:08:17
Would actually get me Dad, what do I actually got? Yeah.

00:51:08:17 –> 00:51:08:23
And

00:51:08:23 –> 00:51:12:13
Then he doesn’t believe me. So he had the Wyoming Tech, which now I’ve ruined him forever because it,

00:51:12:23 –> 00:51:17:02
Oh, he just came off of that. And you’re trying to get him to go back on it, right. On a second choice tag.

00:51:17:02 –> 00:51:34:06
Right. I said, I said this Wyoming tech could be a really good tech. And so he’s worked Wyatt over everything, you know, is it? I’m like, ask Wyatt, ask Wyatt. And Wyatt’s like, dude, it’s one of my best tags of the year. I’m going, we’re da. You know? And so finally he, he goes up there and we get it handed to us. Then he’s like, absolutely, I’m not going to Colorado.

00:51:36:02 –> 00:51:38:10
And he didn’t have a Utah general this year, did he? No, he didn’t.

00:51:38:19 –> 00:51:42:16
He had a, well he had the archery. Oh, he had archery member. We got one at the end.

00:51:43:11 –> 00:51:44:08
Used only one

00:51:44:08 –> 00:51:52:17
Of those. Yeah. That were, you know, turned back or whatever. Left leftover tags. So anyway, he’s just spoiled.

00:51:54:07 –> 00:51:54:13
So

00:51:55:13 –> 00:53:04:04
Whatever. He’s watched me eat a lot of tags and I guess he’s decided he doesn’t like eating techs. I don’t know. So anyway, that’s about it. We’ve got some more hunts going on. We’re gonna, we’re in the office for a day, just catching up and thought we’d throw out a podcast. Can’t think of any other lessons. There’s a lot of takeaways on these things. But we are having members hit us up. We do have a few landlord techs coming available for 2020 in Nevada. If you wanna tag or, or want us to find you a hunt or whatever, hit us up. You can email us at [email protected]. You will get an auto reply. Devin, we’ve hired Devin, we need to introduce him on one of these new podcasts. But he is working with a lot of our outfitters and signing, you know, helping guys find hunts with guaranteed tags and kind of a booking agent. And so anyway, direct any of those kind of inquiries to [email protected]. Of course, you can hit Wyatt or Jason or [email protected]. If you, we wanna see your pictures and stories, hit [email protected] as well. And we’d love to showcase those in the upcoming issues of the Epic Outdoors Magazine.

00:53:05:12 –> 00:53:14:13
I think one takeaway we can just talk about briefly is, is the mental toll that when you eat a tag, how hard it is. And for guys that don’t have, you know,

00:53:14:28 –> 00:53:19:16
So is it hard to justify to the wife that you just ate this tag and it costs thousands of dollars to get their

00:53:19:19 –> 00:54:02:11
Back? Well, I think sometimes, especially if, if a guy, like a member doesn’t ha doesn’t have as many tags as say you do. Right. Or, or, or we do typically on a year and you’ve got maybe one or two good hunts and you, you’re in it and it’s just a grind and it’s just not happening. It, it’s mentally tough sometimes. Yeah. But then I think to hear about, okay, other people are eating tags and learning stuff, what can I learn from this? And there’s next year. And just because I, I’m not successful on one hunt, you know, I, I learned so much this year just on that archery hunt, hunting one place and, and spending a lot of time and, but, but didn’t end up killing a deer. Yeah. But it,

00:54:02:11 –> 00:54:03:08
But it’s not the end of the world,

00:54:03:11 –> 00:54:13:22
But it’s not the end of the world. And there’s next year and, and just things that you can learn. I think it’s, it just, it can take a toll on you and it can be a drag, you know, if, if it’s just not coming together. Well, and

00:54:13:22 –> 00:54:24:06
One, one podcast, Adam and I and why have talked about a little bit social media is ruining hunting hunters. When you’re, you open up your phone, you’re having a tough, you,

00:54:24:07 –> 00:54:27:18
You think everybody’s killing 200 inches, dude, every hunter, but you,

00:54:27:26 –> 00:54:31:18
Every swipe is a 200. Enter AKA Waka

00:54:31:27 –> 00:54:32:06
Waka

00:54:32:06 –> 00:54:36:28
Three. Everybody’s killing one, one, but me, everybody’s killing one, but me. And, and that’s not and that’s not true.

00:54:36:28 –> 00:54:38:04
Not the case at all. It’s not

00:54:38:04 –> 00:55:18:12
The, it’s, and you know what’s hard on the outfitters too, and I’ve had other guys say, well, I’m booked with outfitter A, but Outfitter B’s been killing some big bucks. Well, yeah. Okay, okay. Couple things. Those aren’t just outfitter B’S clients, those are his friends and family too. And they are local and they’ve been working their guts out. Okay. That’s not more one thing. Number two, they may have used fish eye lenses and those bucks may appear much bigger than they really are. They might be 150 inch deer that look 250, not two 50, but 200. I’m just saying there’s so many aspects. You’re competing against amazing photography. You’re competing against the perception

00:55:18:14 –> 00:55:25:01
Only seeing the best ’cause that, that, that outfitter could have take 25 hunters and they’ve killed four giants or they killed, you’re seeing

00:55:25:03 –> 00:55:32:07
The four giants, one giant and three nice ones. And you’re seeing the one giant three nice ones. Well take a picture of 15 empty tags. Yeah,

00:55:32:07 –> 00:55:38:04
That’s right. A picture of that. And you’re, and you’re never gonna hunt with that outfitter again. But that’s the real world. The

00:55:38:04 –> 00:56:01:24
Real world. But nobody’s gonna showcase that ’cause that doesn’t sell hunts. And that’s not exciting to see un punched tag. So we’re competing social media world is just really, the expectations are high. You know, I’m seeing nothing but great bucks off the gon Well, why? It’s, it’s slow. We know it’s slow, but we’ve already seen 222 inch deer smoked on opening day. We’ve seen another 35 inches smoked on opening day.

00:56:02:26 –> 00:56:07:14
So you think, man, there’re giants falling everywhere. Well, there’s 110 people okay. With

00:56:07:14 –> 00:56:08:16
Tags and those hundred people

00:56:08:23 –> 00:56:10:28
Counting land tags and draw tags and, and they’re

00:56:10:28 –> 00:56:13:08
Guides and teams of hunters and all these things. And we

00:56:13:08 –> 00:56:14:14
Can think of two deer. You just,

00:56:14:25 –> 00:57:01:24
Okay, two deer. Okay, but you’re and, and you are going at it. Well, and and not only that is this perception. They’ve all been killed. So you’re like, well, I just did 14 swipes and there was 14 two, you know, 290 fives to two tens killed in Nevada. There’s probably nothing left for me. And, and so I’m gonna eat my tag now. I’m kind of getting pissed her by the minute. And my guide, I think’s an idiot. And maybe my food’s not great. And I kind of didn’t sleep well last night and pretty soon. And there’s a full moon and it’s hot and there’s no weather and it hasn’t rained for two months. I’m pissed. And really, you’re just going through what everybody’s going through and maybe what everybody’s gone through since the beginning of time. Yeah. But now with social media, we’re seeing the highlight reel. I’m just saying it’s all, it’s, I’m just saying keep

00:57:01:24 –> 00:57:02:12
That real. Yep.

00:57:02:16 –> 00:57:20:01
And same thing and the trick photography, it’s real. Everybody’s got trick photography. You’re not competing, you’re not throwing up 150 inch deer that look like one fifties because that doesn’t sell hunts. And so you’re throwing up one fifties that look like one 70 or eighties and then it’s just, it’s just tough nowadays. It’s just tough times have changed.

00:57:20:04 –> 00:57:56:01
Don’t let, don’t let that factor in too much to your hunt. Don’t put too much weight in what you see or the perception of what you see others doing. Just grab your tag, go with your guide or go on your own and don’t let it change your mindset. I have people mid hunt hitting me all the time based on what they’re seeing. I got people coming into my camps an hour before dark, you know, multiple times throughout this season, just wondering what we’ve killed, what we’ve been seeing. And I’m like, why aren’t you out hunting? Ah, I just kind of been a grind. I just, I’d come in before people gimme a pep talk, all that. And I’m like

00:57:56:01 –> 00:57:56:22
Thinking about buffalo

00:57:56:27 –> 00:58:03:16
Hunt, dude, stay out. Freaking be hunting. You know, stay out hunting. Don’t be, don’t be hunting dead deer. You know,

00:58:03:18 –> 00:58:04:00
Don’t be

00:58:04:05 –> 00:58:04:08
Sweating

00:58:04:08 –> 00:58:04:13
It.

00:58:04:14 –> 00:58:14:10
Don’t, don’t be, don’t be checking dead deer. Don’t be getting into checking Instagram and checking camps for dead deer. Dead sheep, dead elk. Don’t be hunting dead stuff. Go hunt what’s still alive. That’s

00:58:14:10 –> 00:58:15:06
Crazy, isn’t it? Anyway,

00:58:15:12 –> 00:58:15:23
It’s just

00:58:15:23 –> 00:58:25:06
Crazy. I’ve noticed that a lot too. People hunting, I, I guess, I don’t know how to word this, but people worried about what everybody else is doing as opposed to just getting out there and hunting ’em themselves. Yeah, yeah.

00:58:25:11 –> 00:58:40:29
It, it, it’s, it’s the wor the world is immediacy. You got Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook. I mean the world’s immediate, you know, something immediate, you know, your phone goes off. You’re wondering who trump’s pissing off now you know what’s in the news. I love the Trump one. You know what I mean?

00:58:41:04 –> 00:58:47:08
Donald Jr. His closer, priceless. Have you seen the new one with Pelosi and them beating a punching back? I mean

00:58:47:23 –> 00:58:55:10
That shit. But, but I’m just kind of making light of that. But it’s, the world is immediate. Everything is immediate. And hunting isn’t immediate.

00:58:55:25 –> 00:59:02:14
That’s my point about being entitled. We got a buck, we pre scouted, we’ve watched this buck for two months. Doesn’t mean you’re gonna kill it. Right.

00:59:02:17 –> 00:59:05:20
You might hunt for two years. If you have that ability to hunt for two or three or

00:59:06:06 –> 00:59:07:00
Four kill

00:59:07:00 –> 00:59:07:28
You never kill him. I’ve

00:59:07:28 –> 00:59:42:12
Got outfitters, you know, Sean’s like Shawn and, and of course he’s millennials, you know, they’re snap he hitting me on the side with this buck, this buck, this buck. And I’m like, Sean, that buck’s on our trail cam on such and such that buck was on our trail cam on such and such as, I’m getting pissed her by the minute. Like, I don’t like to watch my deer die either and they’re my deer because I got a picture of it. Right. But they die. They die, they get hunted. There’s great hunters out there and they’re smoking ’em and they’re posting ’em up and, and, and that was this deer. And we didn’t hunt him because he’s got a weak G two and he says young and we now he’s dead and we’ll never get

00:59:42:12 –> 00:59:48:17
To hunt. Yeah. And you don’t have, and I feel bad about that. You don’t have 15 or 20 deer hunters, so you’re gonna hunt the one or two deer you really wanna hunt. Yeah.

00:59:48:27 –> 01:00:26:28
But I still don’t like watching all these other 200 ERs die, but yet. And so, and we’re, we’re, and we find ourselves camping whether there’s cell service and we get to get updates on all of our competition and all the other guys out in the field. And you, it just goes back to, you know, the clients need cell service and the clients have Instagram or I don’t know. I’m just saying it’s tough. Yeah. I’m saying it. And when the, and when the hunting’s tough and it’s dry and it’s warm, it’s full moon and this and that and it, and the hunting is tough in general. It, the perception is not reality. Even though it feels like people make it their reality, the perception of everybody being successful but you is not true’s not, it’s not true’s not true. No,

01:00:27:01 –> 01:00:27:13
It’s not

01:00:27:13 –> 01:00:29:00
True. That’s right. A hundred thousand

01:00:29:14 –> 01:00:37:29
Tags. That’s great point Utah. And I think, you know, going over how many tags, you know, you’ve eaten this year and Adam’s eating this year and, and, and I’m eating this year. I, I think

01:00:38:26 –> 01:00:39:02
It,

01:00:39:03 –> 01:00:39:10
It

01:00:39:10 –> 01:00:39:18
Shows,

01:00:40:21 –> 01:01:09:07
It just shows more of the reality than, you know, than Yeah. Like you’re saying the 200 inches you see on Instagram all the time, it’s like the, you talk, we talked about the giant buck that was killed on Pine Valley. I talked to guys that were going to Pine Valley and, and they got their butts handed to ’em too and, and didn’t see hardly any deer. And so, you know, had had a, a horrible hunt. Well there were big deer that were killed. You know, they are, they are on the unit, but not everybody’s gonna do it. So Yeah.

01:01:10:19 –> 01:01:14:01
Yeah. Anyway, it’s the hunt’s changing, huh?

01:01:14:07 –> 01:01:18:18
That’s enough rambling. Probably. It’s time to go kill something John. Yeah. You got a date with your daughter?

01:01:20:05 –> 01:01:21:00
Go kill something.

01:01:21:14 –> 01:01:26:28
So one thing real quick that we just have going on here at the office is Wyoming points deadline coming up on the, there you go. 31st.

01:01:27:05 –> 01:01:27:19
Glad you said that.

01:01:27:20 –> 01:01:28:26
Good reminder. Give us the

01:01:28:26 –> 01:01:29:20
Rundown wise with

01:01:29:20 –> 01:01:32:22
The changes, everything this year you’re, you did not get your points when you applied

01:01:33:04 –> 01:01:34:12
For elk cannan you for

01:01:35:01 –> 01:01:40:07
Remember that. You do have to go back in and buy ’em during this points period to, to receive ’em for this year. Yep.

01:01:40:09 –> 01:01:41:13
You had the glad you

01:01:41:13 –> 01:01:41:29
Said that. Geez,

01:01:42:02 –> 01:01:51:20
No opt-in option. I I’m gonna go check my receipts. I’ve done it four times, but I’m just gonna see all my receipts in my family had your kids. Yep. And make sure I did ’em, and I know I

01:01:51:20 –> 01:01:55:28
Did, but if you’re in our license app, we’ve, we’ve went through and already got that taken care of for you. So Right,

01:01:56:10 –> 01:02:10:01
Wyatt. Yeah. That’s awesome. Well, I’m glad you brought that up. Wyatt. Wyatt, of course he’s dealing with our license app pretty heavy. Especially, you know, this time of year with the renewals and whatnot and, and he’s dealing with guys and so anyway, that deadline is

01:02:10:03 –> 01:02:11:00
October 31st.

01:02:11:05 –> 01:02:12:12
October 31st coming

01:02:12:14 –> 01:02:13:22
Up 10 days. Get her in.

01:02:14:06 –> 01:03:02:23
I think it’s important to, I guess we should just talk about points real quick. You may never want to go to Wyoming. Get the point anyway. I I don’t necessarily, not saying sheep or sheep or moose is well, is worth it. But I’m saying antelope, it’s like right now everybody knows it teases about antelope. They’re freaking truck chase. Truck chase. I don’t know what’s between their eyes, but it ain’t much. Okay, I’m just saying get your points. I want to go, I’m glad I’ve got points. I’ve been gaining points as much as y’all think I haven’t been, I have. Okay. And same thing with deer and same thing with elk. We went on a deer hunt. Yeah, we got spanked, but we could have been heroes. We ended up zeroes, but we could have been heroes. I’m just saying get the points. So you have options. Get the points. So you have options. Deer, elk, can antelope get ’em, get ’em for your kids. It’s, it’s worth the money. 50, 40 and 30 bucks basically for round numbers.

01:03:03:05 –> 01:03:05:05
