Applying in NM, UT, OR and a Mexico Coues Deer Hunt. In this episode we talk about our February magazine and outline each of the states covered in that issue. These include New Mexico, Utah, and Oregon. We also hear the report from John’s recent trip to Mexico to hunt Coues Deer. John showed up at the office this week with a black eye from Mexico so we were all intrigued to hear about the trip.

00:00:01:18 –> 00:00:03:07
That’s changed things for New Mexico.
00:00:03:17 –> 00:00:09:06
No less than 84% of the tags in a certain hunt code are going to residents. My
00:00:09:07 –> 00:00:14:12
Face hits the the gun case and breaks it. Anything to do with Western big games.
00:00:17:21 –> 00:00:18:06
Welcome
00:00:18:06 –> 00:00:21:11
To the Epic Outdoors Podcast, powered by Under Armour.
00:00:22:12 –> 00:00:58:05
Hey everybody. Jason Carter, Adam Bronson, John Peterson. Chris Peterson, of course Chris is at the keyboard, gonna do his thing, make sure he deletes anything and everything that’s unimportant or otherwise and won’t be used against us and otherwise offensive. That’s right. It’s in your best interest. Sometimes we talk about Republicans and Democrats and of course more about negative on Democrats, but Chris doesn’t let that go on air. And so we appreciate that. We appreciate Under Armour for sponsoring this podcast. They sponsor everything we do here at Epic Outdoors and we sponsor ourselves too. How about that John? I like that. Huh? Epic sponsors Epic. How about that?
00:00:58:20 –> 00:00:58:29
Absolutely.
00:00:59:12 –> 00:01:01:24
All right. So anyway, enough with that one. What we’re
00:01:01:24 –> 00:01:09:26
Gonna yak out today, guys, we’re February. Do you realize that we turned the calendar page February, 2020. Where’s this going? Where’d 31 days go?
00:01:10:02 –> 00:01:18:02
February 4th. Geez. Not only are we in February, we’re jumping into February in on the fourth here today. Tuesday,
00:01:19:02 –> 00:01:30:01
We’d like to give a shout out to all you leap year birthday folks. Born on February 29th. You get a raw deal every four years. You get a birthday, but you don’t age that fast that way. So it depends on how you look at it.
00:01:30:08 –> 00:01:47:21
Be like me, I’m aging a year every six months. How about that? All right, so we do have a February magazine that came out reminded us that it is February. Sometimes we get a little break here, a little reprieve. We did have, speaking of reprieve Bronson, what we did where this, we did blow through a, an application deadline. Heck
00:01:47:22 –> 00:02:02:15
Yeah. Huh? Wyoming Elk is over in Arizona. Elk and antelope is on its heels here next, next Tuesday. So yeah, get those in by Tuesday. 1159. Mountain time. Next Tuesday, February 11th and kind
00:02:02:15 –> 00:02:04:18
Of final in Arizona. There’s no plug and play in there.
00:02:04:26 –> 00:02:29:12
No points on the extension, no points Only in the summer. So yeah, get it in or you can commiss your point and maybe your loyalty point. So it can be, it’s a big deal. Critical deal. Yeah, that’s right. Big deal. So we all are gonna cover in this magazine, the Nevada Nevada Guide draw alert. We’re gonna give that a little bit of attention. New Mexico and Utah. And then Jason’s gonna spend quite a bit of time deepen digging into Oregon.
00:02:31:00 –> 00:02:40:18
I’m dig into Oregon for a minute. Skip that state. Go on to something special. Just teasing Oregon Heights. Do not load my email. We
00:02:40:18 –> 00:02:44:25
Hear from you. Most of the time you’re like, you got spot on. But we don’t. It is
00:02:44:25 –> 00:02:45:07
Impressive.
00:02:45:07 –> 00:02:52:18
It’s mainly, we’re talking about it from a non-resident perspective in the 5% tags, no whittled in half, usually in the best units, right?
00:02:52:18 –> 00:03:09:20
No, because they give tags to, for deer, elk, they give tags to outfitters to sell to us. We appreciate that. Thanks for selling us tags that we get. And of course we don’t have any say in that game. And fish agencies get to do that. By the way, I want to talk about one thing that’s coming down the pipe nobody knows about, right?
00:03:11:01 –> 00:03:11:05
Hmm.
00:03:11:19 –> 00:03:13:13
Wyoming’s revisiting the tag allocations.
00:03:14:01 –> 00:03:14:07
Yes.
00:03:14:22 –> 00:03:15:07
We’re hearing
00:03:15:29 –> 00:03:17:01
Gnashing. The teases in the,
00:03:18:12 –> 00:03:20:13
Isn’t it? Yeah. National. Yeah, we’re talking 10%. We’re
00:03:20:15 –> 00:03:25:16
From outfitters. That’s right. We’re hearing from outfitters that are, that are freaking out
00:03:25:18 –> 00:03:26:19
Privy to this information
00:03:26:19 –> 00:03:33:06
And they’re freaking out. Yeah, right. Yeah. This is an estate that has, has some pretty pro outfitting laws on the books.
00:03:33:26 –> 00:03:44:04
Meaning they make us hire somebody if we go into wilderness. Of course the outfitters love that now that we’re gonna cut our tag allocations. That’ll possibly cut into their potential client list. ’cause residents aren’t gonna hire people. It
00:03:44:04 –> 00:03:58:16
Could affect things quite a bit in a state that has in the most recent years with price increases, preference point fee increases, online convenience fee increases. It’s making it harder and harder to keep some
00:03:58:16 –> 00:04:00:02
Of these species supporting of that state. Well
00:04:00:02 –> 00:04:13:27
You got sheet moose go bison tags doubling to 4,500 and then you’re gonna start whittling down percentages pretty soon. Be careful what you’re asking for. ’cause you might get an exodus
00:04:14:11 –> 00:04:25:26
Kind of funny. Wyoming’s one of those states. It’s the only state you wanna pay more for this tagging. Buy down your odds. You know, that’s interesting. I mean that’s just saying flat, plain and simple. We love money. Well
00:04:25:26 –> 00:04:33:26
It’s revenue. Americans apply here. And for all of you that like the European form of hunting apply for the big money tax
00:04:34:01 –> 00:04:34:23
And we’re good with that
00:04:35:02 –> 00:04:35:09
And
00:04:35:09 –> 00:04:46:02
We’re fine. We’re good with that. Pick it anyway. Hey. Hey. And I’ve, and I’ve applied for the special and paid for it youth. Even my, my kid got the special paid for it. 1200 and whatever, 80 some odd dollars just
00:04:46:02 –> 00:04:54:17
Pointing out to, it’s a very unique, we get a lot of questions on it. What’s this special? Nothing other than you pay more for it again. And in theory should have more better drying odds. But not always the case. And,
00:04:54:21 –> 00:06:13:07
And we didn’t mean to talk about Wyoming, but with the non-resident tag allocations possibly changing in the legislature, who knows? We’ll see how that happens. Could be a big deal. The guy that told me about it, I did tell him, Hey, email me the details because I can tell the world to fight and nash their teeth and I haven’t heard or seen anything on it. But that’s what we hear is out there. So we’ll see how that shakes out. You know the one thing, Bronson, there was a guy out there long time before us, well actually when we, he’s not much before us, but did want to take on the non-resident allocation fight. And he did it. And I thought he was gonna be a hero and I thought he would have a ton of support because in our little world we’re non-residents in most everywhere we go. And we agreed that his federal property, federal taxes, all of these things, we should be created a little more equal. And the hunting world left him high and dry and did not support that and did not support the tag allocations being equal to residents and non-residents. And so, I don’t know know that there’ll be a lot of support on this Wyoming thing either. Like people are not gonna, not gonna, not gonna do much change generally. Yeah. Or support that or, or support more non-resident rights. Meaning yes, higher non-resident tag allocations
00:06:13:29 –> 00:07:07:16
To support that despite the overwhelming per tag issued, the overwhelming evidence of licensed sales revenue that come from non-residents in every state compared to resident license sales. Despite that, you know, still a very unique individual state by state, they’re, and it’s natural. You wanna fight for what’s, what’s quote yours in your state. You wanna fight for that. But anyway, just, just sometimes certain things you might, you might cause an exodus you might cause alright, no longer worth it. And it backfires. They don’t have money, they don’t have ways to run programs. What are they gonna do then? Turn to the residents and jack their fees. Then you’re getting international OFTs. So just, there’s fine lines and lines that can get crossed either way. So it’ll be interesting to see what happens in Wyoming. But New Mexico,
00:07:07:26 –> 00:07:21:29
New Mexico did, New Mexico did jump into where it’s mandatory purchase of a hunting license. Whereas before we could, you know, elect to get out of that if we didn’t draw. And so, you know, and they’re, they’re now get grabbing $65 from H of us as
00:07:21:29 –> 00:07:37:02
Well. They, and the, and the thought behind that at the time, if you remember was they were scared that they were gonna have too many people not applying in New Mexico. So let’s say, well we’re gonna charge you for it when you apply, but if you don’t draw, we’re gonna allow you to check the box to opt out if you don’t want it.
00:07:37:13 –> 00:07:38:26
You know? Right.
00:07:39:03 –> 00:07:43:06
And it was only to soften the blow to like, we still want your application fees and apply
00:07:43:06 –> 00:07:45:20
If you forget and have a little oversight, well thank you for your business, but thanks for
00:07:45:20 –> 00:07:46:04
65 bucks.
00:07:46:19 –> 00:08:08:01
Now it’s a mandatory, but now it’s gone and hey, we’re all still applying. Yeah, we’re still right. And they’re loving it. That’s right. All is well. They’re happy. They’re so happy that with the non-residents that they even curbed us a little bit more going. And now it is a mandatory, 84% of the tags go to residents, which was originally written. Yeah. Now it’s being interpreted minimum up.
00:08:08:01 –> 00:08:15:17
Literally. Yeah. Now they’re gonna make sure that no less than 84% of the tags in a certain hunt code are going to residents in that
00:08:15:20 –> 00:08:20:23
And up to 10% go to the guide pool and up to 6%. That’s
00:08:20:23 –> 00:08:20:25
Right.
00:08:21:10 –> 00:08:22:22
Go to non-residents that, that
00:08:22:22 –> 00:08:23:01
Might be zero,
00:08:23:15 –> 00:08:25:29
Have their freedom of choosing to go guided or not.
00:08:26:09 –> 00:08:27:14
That might be 0%
00:08:27:17 –> 00:08:29:26
And in a lot of cases it’s zero. Yeah. A
00:08:29:26 –> 00:08:33:13
Lot of cases they’ll never be below 84. It might be 88 or 90.
00:08:33:27 –> 00:08:34:06
Yeah.
00:08:34:09 –> 00:08:36:13
Because a rounding might be 90%,
00:08:36:23 –> 00:08:37:14
They can round up
00:08:37:14 –> 00:08:42:04
10% in the guided. That’s right. And zero and unguided. Now that’s gonna be very common. You’ll see that
00:08:42:04 –> 00:08:49:11
If it was a 6.2% of the tax Dakota non-residents, that’s not gonna happen. They’re they’re not re round. No,
00:08:49:11 –> 00:08:50:24
It’s not mandatory. No, it’s up to,
00:08:50:24 –> 00:08:56:11
It’s up to six 10. It’s up to exceed. And so anyway, that’s changed things for New Mexico’s actually. Let’s dive
00:08:56:11 –> 00:08:56:18
Into that.
00:08:56:18 –> 00:08:59:28
Yeah. That they’ve actually, yeah, they’re, they’re interpreting that literally
00:08:59:28 –> 00:09:03:12
The biggest change for this year probably in New Mexico. Well,
00:09:03:12 –> 00:09:15:17
And that’s a lot in large part. ’cause every four years they do a big giant review of the entire state. And that happened last year. There was a lot of changes this year. Kind of rubber stamped so to speak, with the exception some season,
00:09:15:19 –> 00:09:16:05
Season dates,
00:09:16:05 –> 00:09:34:20
Interpreting dates. Yeah. Few season dates. Exactly. They did just because of the calendar shift and, and the way the rule’s written on establishing seasons. You’ll see that there’s some later season dates, meaning not new later season dates the same season as last year’s. A little later, a week later, five days later than it was last
00:09:34:20 –> 00:10:40:05
Year. Well, I’m kicking it off real quick. Just a, just a quick overview of the application deadline since we are talking about New Mexico will be March 18th at 5:00 PM The draw results will be out by April 29th. It’s definitely worth pointing out. We alluded to it a minute ago. It’s a state where you do have to buy a hunting license to apply. It is a reduced price license for youth. $15 for, or $10 I should say for residents. 15 for non-residents, 65 for adult and non-residents. Not terrible when compared to some of the other states that are 150 to $75. But they do charge you your permit fees. So that is in many cases, Jason, a fairly big deterrent. People you know, tax at 3,200 bucks. Elk tags and IEX at 1600 or 1600. I mean you can, if you get, if you get carried away, you’re gonna be eight 10 grand on your, your card. Oh, per person. Pretty easy per person. And they do, they’re very expeditious. I don’t know if that’s the right word, but I just said it. Some of ’em make it a word. They are, they do turn around pretty quick and get it back on
00:10:40:05 –> 00:11:06:10
Your card. Yeah. You might not go through a full billing cycle on your credit card if you’re a lucky guy or gal. So anyway, nice thing for residents. I mean your license is 15 bucks. You know your elk, your expensive elk licenses are 90 bucks. Antelope, 60 bucks, sheep, 160 bucks. How about that? Orx, you know, 160 bucks. Ibex 110. Pretty, pretty affordable. You know, for us. 1600 bucks, 3,100. Not a big deal. Right. Alright.
00:11:06:12 –> 00:11:18:25
What would you say, we talked about the change. I don’t know if you wanna talk about any, anything more about the specifics about that interpretation? I think let, let’s talk about, well, I tag numbers. Yeah. I think basically like if you see a ta, a unit with
00:11:19:24 –> 00:11:20:19
Under 10 tags,
00:11:20:19 –> 00:11:22:11
15 or less tags. Yeah. 15 or
00:11:22:11 –> 00:11:22:13
Less.
00:11:22:18 –> 00:11:24:28
Stay away from it. That’s right. Unless you’re gonna do the guide
00:11:24:28 –> 00:11:57:16
Draw. That’s right. And we’ve, and we’ve put it in our publication, which those of you are members, of course you’ve got online emag as well as a paper mag coming to your doorstep. Should have it any day if not already. We just got mine. And so anyway, we do signify in there and Adam said make it in bold so I Right clicked and bolded that sucker. What’d they do? Which is basically telling you a warning you that there will not be tags in that particular point here. Make sure you’re signed up with an outfitter in those low tag number type hunts or don’t apply. Yep. So,
00:11:57:28 –> 00:12:06:02
And if you’re in some of those that have three to five tags, there’s a couple weird hunts like that in the state. They’re only gonna be resident only this year. Yeah, for sure. So,
00:12:06:14 –> 00:12:23:05
Yep. So anyway, we put that across the board. Great hunting in New Mexico. I don’t really wanna, I don’t wanna go unit by unit. We got three states we’re gonna grind through here. Plus we’re gonna talk about a hunting experience that John is sitting here. Bronson staring at us. He’s with his one black eye.
00:12:24:05 –> 00:12:30:04
That’s a teaser for later in the podcast. But we do not leave us at the end. ’cause you’re gonna wanna hear this story, I promise.
00:12:30:19 –> 00:12:33:08
Has to do with cattle guards. Can you imagine what happened?
00:12:33:16 –> 00:12:35:07
And Mexico, whoa.
00:12:37:20 –> 00:12:40:18
On a bike and headed for the cattle guard. All right. So anyway,
00:12:40:28 –> 00:12:48:24
Let’s talk maybe just about a brief, what overview of the highlights of New Mexico? Jason, when you think New Mexico, I think a big bull and somebody says, Hey, what should I do in New Mexico?
00:12:49:00 –> 00:12:52:01
Yeah. You killed a big bull. I’ve killed some bulls. Chris, you’ve killed bulls. Elk.
00:12:52:04 –> 00:12:53:17
Elk is what I’m hearing. Bull
00:12:53:17 –> 00:12:53:24
Elk.
00:12:54:10 –> 00:12:55:18
Remember we’re talking elk. That’s right.
00:12:56:04 –> 00:13:02:13
Not talking about orx at the moment. Although that’s very unique and great to eat. Of course. John the French like horses, don’t they? Oh yeah,
00:13:02:23 –> 00:13:04:07
Absolutely. Orx is probably the closest.
00:13:05:04 –> 00:13:10:02
John’s married to a French gal. I like to tease them a little bit. Do you guys eat horses? We haven’t
00:13:10:02 –> 00:13:10:23
Yet. It’s
00:13:11:06 –> 00:13:13:10
Trys hard. Get here. You need to try the Western Mustang.
00:13:14:01 –> 00:13:23:05
The reason it’s hard to get John is you’ll be in federal prison if you do that. You wanna go just feeding your family. You want to go to the cattle, the auction and adopt court, adopt a horse,
00:13:23:23 –> 00:13:24:19
Smoke it the next day,
00:13:24:22 –> 00:13:30:25
And then take it down to the, take it down, put it on the down here, drive it in your horse hole and say it. Just, just take care of this.
00:13:31:21 –> 00:13:45:16
Put it on the Traeger. Wonder what they charge you to cut and wrap a wild Mustang. So anyway, they do have desert sheep, Rocky mountain, big horns. Phenomenal. Incredible, awesome. Sheep. Sheep. But they have very few very
00:13:45:16 –> 00:13:45:23
Limited
00:13:45:24 –> 00:13:52:12
Tags. Non-resident tags. That’s right. We break it down. It’s awesome. We, they have amazing elks. In fact, the the moisture content
00:13:53:00 –> 00:13:53:28
Precipitation level
00:13:53:28 –> 00:13:58:29
Of precipitation has been amazing this winter and spring, early spring. Or you, if it continues, it’ll be awesome.
00:13:59:03 –> 00:14:01:08
Water. You could say water. The level
00:14:01:11 –> 00:14:03:22
Of what lakes streams,
00:14:03:23 –> 00:14:09:25
The amount of water received in the ground up till now. I don’t know. Just, I’m trying to find synonyms for moisture. 200
00:14:09:25 –> 00:14:31:28
Pound dude sinks a high inch telling me it’s a good year. It should be awesome. There’s, they’ve got some the best seasons in New Mexico besides the mobility impaired in the youth. Credible seasons, muzzle and rifle. But the archery hunts are by far the best. And everybody I know I used to tout these early seasons. They are a little early. I got my butt kicked this last year on early season, didn’t we? Chris sucked. We did see it. You
00:14:31:28 –> 00:14:36:18
Did go the first week of the early season instead of, okay. We did closer to the end of the first
00:14:36:18 –> 00:14:38:05
90 degrees. It
00:14:38:05 –> 00:14:39:11
Was rough degrees.
00:14:39:11 –> 00:14:42:04
Chris, Chris sweated his off. I
00:14:42:04 –> 00:14:43:26
Did. And this is
00:14:43:26 –> 00:14:48:07
A, I had personal zippers put in for heat vents. Chris didn’t.
00:14:48:15 –> 00:14:51:01
Nope. Aftermarket tailoring. Oh yeah.
00:14:52:03 –> 00:14:53:12
Big gold. It
00:14:53:12 –> 00:15:02:06
Was even, it was, yeah, it was even warm later. I was there in October. We both hunted it this year. It was like, like there’s something for everybody. No point system in New Mexico.
00:15:02:15 –> 00:15:09:01
We spent seven days, didn’t see Jack Bronson spends a day and a half smokes a three 80. How about that? Hell
00:15:09:04 –> 00:15:11:06
I did half a 300 ultra.
00:15:11:29 –> 00:15:23:23
Okay. And it was one of those early seasons, which are awesome. Yeah. You know, that’s the one thing about New Mexico. Weird stuff produces big animals. Yeah. Weird stuff for antelope. Weird stuff for elk. Weird stuff for deer.
00:15:23:28 –> 00:15:50:01
And we apply differently since you’re not risking points trying to get something outta your points in New Mexico. You know, I, I applied differently every year. Usually with a time slot that fits me best. Last year, my early October, like the first 10 days of October was my window. And so every, all three of my choices for elk, they, they look at all three choices in New Mexico. It was just best for me. My September looked jammed and I didn’t wanna jam. It was a great elk year. I didn’t want to sit it out. You
00:15:50:01 –> 00:16:03:23
Know, they do have er down there. You get to do one deer application and you have three choices on there and all of which are valid. So same thing. Mulder cup first choice or two kous deer’s last choice or vice versa. You koo deer lover. Do do all three cer choices
00:16:03:26 –> 00:16:13:02
On and you got exotics if you don’t wanna travel to Africa or Turkey or all these exotic countries. They bring animals to New Mexico. Yeah. Gotta three free of them. The orcs, like Jason talked about,
00:16:13:05 –> 00:16:26:26
Go down the exotic road. So, alright. Speaking of which, speaking of which, Wyatt. Wyatt here in our office is in Texas. Smoking barbery issues.
00:16:26:29 –> 00:16:28:24
He smoked a giant today. He did.
00:16:28:25 –> 00:16:30:24
It’s, it’s a, with an endorsed outfitter. It
00:16:30:24 –> 00:16:37:28
Would make me make, I’ve shot one in New Mexico. It’s like a 29 or 30 inch or just a solid ram. It’s nothing like this. 35
00:16:37:28 –> 00:16:39:19
And a half inch by 13. This is a giant.
00:16:39:20 –> 00:16:45:07
Come on. It’s about, about, I want another one. I assume like that. Yeah. Anyway. But then you,
00:16:45:20 –> 00:16:49:02
You can’t leave work. I guess he can. I don’t know. Bronson, you let him go.
00:16:51:00 –> 00:16:52:06
What do you see about that white way
00:16:55:19 –> 00:16:59:13
Now? We’re getting his emails and doing his work. Our work and any other work
00:16:59:17 –> 00:17:04:06
And we’re envious the whole time because he’s WhatsApping us kill shop video. We
00:17:04:06 –> 00:17:08:18
Started the business so we get paid to hunt and fish. And why, why is out hunting and fishing? Right.
00:17:09:26 –> 00:17:18:19
The fun part about this is he doesn’t even have to be here when we’re crushing him still. Alright. Usually he’s sitting here with us and he just sits there and takes it on the chin. Now he’s not, he’s indefensible.
00:17:19:00 –> 00:17:33:20
Nice thing Bronson is, you can go back to applying for elk. There’s no waiting periods. Yeah. It’s awesome. Every new New Mexico’s one of those plug and play states and you can waste money. That’s what you’re talking about. It’s okay to waste money ’cause you don’t have points built up and, and it and you can pull out of it. Well and you
00:17:33:20 –> 00:17:40:07
Know and yeah. What you mean by waste money is Yeah, just go out on a limb, get a tag. Go go try something.
00:17:40:12 –> 00:17:41:12
Make the most of it if you can.
00:17:41:18 –> 00:17:53:16
When it comes to deer there’s a, a couple of solid deer units that are as consistent as New Mexico get. Then there’s 98% of the rest of the state. Who knows? Who knows? Just go try something. Dude,
00:17:53:24 –> 00:17:59:24
I was forwarded a picture of a two 30 buck in like killed on the highway in some obscure weird unit. Yeah.
00:18:00:07 –> 00:18:00:20
I mean it’s,
00:18:00:26 –> 00:18:04:23
Who knows? New Mexico’s weird. Yeah, but it’s a great state dude. Two
00:18:04:23 –> 00:18:10:29
Dude giant antelope, you know. Anyway, it’s all in the magazine. Read apply. March 18th. That’s
00:18:10:29 –> 00:18:28:18
Right. March 18th. Do your harvest reporting. That’s right. That that’s kind of a mandatory thing. Yeah. You hung there last year. Make sure you do. Alright John, let’s just do something different. Okay? Okay. Well we, we can do the guide. Draw alert everybody apply for the guide draw. All right, now let’s talk about something important. Nevada.
00:18:28:22 –> 00:18:33:04
We should talk about the guide. Draw New Mexico first too as a segue into Nevada. How’s Jason?
00:18:33:04 –> 00:18:33:22
Go ahead. Run
00:18:34:14 –> 00:18:44:00
Well in New Mexico for all species. As we mentioned earlier in the quotas, they do have a guide draw outfitter pool for all species. Yeah.
00:18:44:03 –> 00:18:46:07
For both residents and non-residents. That’s come on.
00:18:46:12 –> 00:18:46:20
Yeah.
00:18:46:22 –> 00:18:46:25
I
00:18:46:25 –> 00:18:53:04
Don’t know how many residents are actually putting in that because you’d have to analyze the odds to see if it’s ever better for a resident to put in with a guide. It’s
00:18:53:04 –> 00:18:54:01
The principle of it. Okay.
00:18:54:01 –> 00:18:54:20
Any, they get the
00:18:54:20 –> 00:18:57:26
84% already under. It’s the principle of it. So a
00:18:57:26 –> 00:19:36:11
Lot of times we, we term it as the non-resident guide drop. It’s not technically true. But anyway, if you are gonna go with an outfitter in New Mexico on any of your hunts and you know you are, you should give us a call, get set up with an outfitter. It might be a couple of outfitters ’cause you might pick one for sheep and one for a different part of the state because there’s rarely one outfitter that does everything perfectly in every unit in the state. So be, be aware of that. Give us a call. You might have certain things with, you know, elk. You just wanna shoot average five and six point bulls. You don’t want to compete with the bad odds in the Gila units. You wanna go in northern New Mexico somewhere. But then you wanna apply for in the southern end for the orx and Ibic. Give us a call.
00:19:36:11 –> 00:19:43:00
May, may choose a couple of outfitters is what you’re getting at. Okay. Or you could do one outfitter and that contract is transferrable to another outfitter. So as long
00:19:43:00 –> 00:19:45:02
As your outfitter’s willing to do that, you’re, you’re good to go. And
00:19:45:02 –> 00:20:23:16
We’re working with guys that are willing to do that. Basically at the end of the day, if you don’t wanna be with them, they don’t want to take you. I get it. It’s all good. We’ve been working with good guys. Call us. We can sure help you out. Great way to draw tags. In fact, some cases it’s the only way for a non-resident to draw a tag. That’s some of these low quota units. That’s right. All right. So that comes Nevada into the Nevada guide. Draw another extortion of non-resident tags forcing us taking a portion of our tags and reallocate ’em through the guides. And we can have access to those if we apply in the Nevada guide, draw you. So at the end of the day this, if you’re gonna go guide it anyway and you’re gonna use a rifle jump in the Nevada guide drop.
00:20:23:19 –> 00:21:02:03
For the most part these, the odds are 2, 3, 4 times better. Some, there’s a couple of cases in a that there has a good as the main draw, but for the most part it’s better. That has a deadline of March 9th, 2020 and anyway so early. But the results will also come out early. You’ll be able to know if you drew early for other state application deadlines that are coming up. And if you do that, you cannot apply in the main draw for deer. And, and of course you’re selecting rifle only as we talked about. And then you can use your points. Of course they’ll naturally be used, not like an option. They’ll naturally be used. Any previously points that gained will be used in the guide draw. That’s
00:21:02:03 –> 00:21:33:00
Right. You don’t have to have accumulated all your deer points in the guide draw in the past to use them in the guide. Draw you their dear points are dear points. One of the biggest things, and you touched on it for me, if you’re gonna go guided, it’s definitely the way you should go. But you find out by the end of March you find out two months before the regular Nevada draw. Yeah. What is that gonna do? You’re booked with your outfit or two months before you pick the dates and all that versus entering the regular drawing you find out at the end of May and with people that have bought landowner tags or they drew the guy draw, you’re behind a lot of that.
00:21:33:00 –> 00:22:04:03
It’s kind of nice. You get to have it’s, you get to cherry pick the dates with the, that’s because he’s basically got a free schedule. That’s right. The the, you know, the, the regular application period will end May 4th. So it’s kind of new. Normally it’s been the second Tuesday in May. So they did adjust that. Pretty awesome. Great opportunity. You know, there’s some interesting things with Nevada coming down the pipe. You’ve been able to point boost in the past. That’s basically gonna come down, come to an end. You can point boost one time. You’re both gonna use your tags though. Your grandma, mom or or girlfriend or whatever boost
00:22:04:03 –> 00:22:04:23
They’re going back
00:22:04:23 –> 00:23:08:04
To. One’s gonna have to, yeah, they’re gonna go back to, to one. If they turn their tag back in so they can turn their tag back in. But they’re going back to one you basically, it’s a one time boost option. So guys that have been kind of using the same point booster year after year after year and drawn amazing tags, they’ll be able to do it one more time then, then that point booster’s gonna go to zero or else use his or her tags. So anyway, definitely be cognizant of that. Some more changes coming up. There’s quite a few changes actually coming down the pipe in Nevada. They’ve even talked about possibility of less than five choices being on the application being valid, which would help drawing odds. I’d have to, I’m not very good at math. We’d have to run some numbers again, but I do believe that would help out. So there’s so few tags offered and everybody gets five choices. It’s almost like there’s legit five times the applicants as normal because they’re not many people are drawing their first through fourth. So all five choices are valid and actually you’re actually in the draw for those. So it just dilutes the draws that much further. Let’s talk about draw tags, Western hunting, conservation and Expo. John, bring it out. Well,
00:23:08:04 –> 00:23:40:14
We’re all getting ready and we’re about a week away from the Western Hunting and Conservation Expo in Salt Lake City, Utah. So if you’ve never been, it’s one of the better shows I think in the, in the west. We’ve got a, a big booth there and it’s a time for us to meet our members and, and talk hunting for almost a week. So the dates on that, book your tickets and come out and, and join us February 13th through the 16th 2020 in Salt Lake City, Utah. That’s
00:23:40:14 –> 00:23:42:11
Next week, dude. Yep. That’s next week. Yep.
00:23:42:22 –> 00:23:45:05
Booth number 27 44. We’ll be there, there.
00:23:46:19 –> 00:23:50:10
And we’ll be at the Rodio Grill by the way, Bronson,
00:23:50:27 –> 00:23:53:13
Oh, we had a good comment about that. Okay.
00:23:54:15 –> 00:23:55:26
We were talking about the Wolf podcast.
00:23:55:27 –> 00:24:08:16
Let’s bring up, let’s bring up that at the end after John’s Black Eye, because those are two, let’s, the Rodio Grill of the West. We’re gonna talk about what state that is. Well just, you guys be thinking in your minds what state that could be
00:24:08:16 –> 00:24:11:01
And and it relates to the most recent podcast. That’s
00:24:11:01 –> 00:24:16:10
Right. Okay. All Let’s also also talk about our, our seminar at the Hunt Expo.
00:24:16:10 –> 00:24:31:19
Oh, we do. We are putting on a seminar. Who knows what we’re gonna talk about. Although we wanna invite, we wanna invite people to ha to send us questions and do it, do so on Chris’s email. Of course. Bombard it, [email protected]. Hit him up.
00:24:32:00 –> 00:24:34:11
C h r i [email protected].
00:24:34:13 –> 00:24:50:14
And that is gonna be Friday at five 30. We’ll answer a few questions. Of course. We reserve the right not to answer a couple questions. There’s some people that are gonna get pretty personal on this. Try to figure out exactly where we’re gonna be this fall, next fall or last fall. And that ain’t gonna work. Right. That’s, I mean, we’re entitled to a couple things, right?
00:24:50:20 –> 00:24:54:18
It’s Valentine’s evening, right before you’re gonna take your significant other to dinner. Bring her,
00:24:55:06 –> 00:24:55:19
Bring her,
00:24:55:19 –> 00:24:58:08
Bring her. There’s a precursor. I’m sure she’ll love it. And
00:24:58:09 –> 00:25:02:05
If you’re not married, let us know. We’ll grind her out and just make sure
00:25:02:27 –> 00:25:05:25
That she’s, well we will vet somebody during the podcast. We’ll
00:25:05:25 –> 00:25:17:18
Make sure that she’s fit to be a hunter’s wife. That’s how about, that’s right. We’re gonna let her know what she’s getting in for and we’ll publish her responses so that it is in writing set in stone that she is accepting of the hunting lifestyles. Yeah.
00:25:17:21 –> 00:25:22:28
We will record the podcast and you’ll have proof of what was said and done and committed to. That’s
00:25:22:28 –> 00:25:24:06
Right. That’s right. Tell
00:25:24:06 –> 00:25:58:19
Death. Do your part. Anyhow, so that, that is, but we’re serious about taking some questions, legitimate questions from y’all. If you want to have a few questions answered. Obviously we could go a million directions. We don’t want it to sit there and go through, you know, line by line how a state system works and go through all 15 Western. Not gonna happen. We’re not gonna do that. We’re gonna talk more about concepts of our own application strategy and also how that has changed. It’s changed in the last 10 or 15 years for us as draw tax. They’re tough to get. That’s,
00:25:58:23 –> 00:26:02:23
And as we get some gotta more, you know, we all change. Yeah, we all change.
00:26:02:27 –> 00:26:09:05
You gotta make more with less sometimes. So we’re gonna go that route a little bit. But welcome to take some, some questions and then the next day sounds
00:26:09:05 –> 00:26:12:18
Like a self-reliance fireside. Make more with less. Right.
00:26:14:26 –> 00:26:20:23
Start, start a fire with two bricks. I mean, I dunno, where do you, where do you go? I dunno. Survival. Well then the
00:26:20:29 –> 00:26:32:16
Survival jumps right into pyro putty. Sounds like pyro putty. You know, if you’re out, down and out and you’re cold, let chest and save your butt and uses pyro putty and light up some wet moss. Huh? I did use it
00:26:32:29 –> 00:26:39:10
On this Mexico mule deer hunt or cous dare hunt. You used the Mexico junk. Yeah, it was cold. Come
00:26:39:10 –> 00:26:41:20
On. It was under 30 degrees. Come on down
00:26:41:20 –> 00:26:42:08
There. So,
00:26:42:23 –> 00:26:44:26
Well I don’t under 30. Yeah,
00:26:45:01 –> 00:26:46:11
Come on. It was in
00:26:46:11 –> 00:27:04:20
The morning. It was cold. Dude. You were in Mexico. You probably had a broken thermometer. So anyway, go to phone scope.com. www.phone scope.com. He does pyro putty. Of course he does the phone scope. We’ve been videoing our hunts. That’s the hunts you see videoed at the expo at our booth. Large in part was done from a phone scope
00:27:04:26 –> 00:27:57:07
On the Saturday. Another great event that we have been a sponsor of, look forward to as a full choral society social. This is February 15th at, I believe it’s about starts about 10:00 AM at the Western Hunting Conservation Expo. A minimum of 11 fully guided North American sheep hunts will be giving away that day. All species of North American wall sheep are available. Sign up for the full curl event and buy your sheep [email protected]. Pretty awesome to watch people yell and scream and ru run up there and realizing they’ve want 20, 30, 40, $50,000 sheet hunt. And we’ll be there. Like I said, we encourage you to buy your tickets online or at the full Curl Society booth prior to Saturday. If you wait till Saturday, they do sell them that morning. But the line is epic. It’s huge. Wow. It is giant. Oh, play
00:27:57:10 –> 00:27:58:02
On words and
00:27:58:22 –> 00:28:26:04
And we’re all gonna be staring there looking at you, holding up the drawing of the tickets because you’re there just to walk up to buy your tickets that day. No, just kidding. But really no. Kind of. Really we are, because we wanna see the winners get drawn. But if we got a giant line of people showing up that day, we just assume, and I know they would just assume buy your tickets, pick ’em up at the booth, put ’em in the bins and then just come there Saturday morning. Watch who wins. Although you can buy ’em Saturday morning again. This is February 15th to Saturday at the Western Hunting Conservation Expo.
00:28:26:05 –> 00:28:31:04
This is around the corner right now. Pretty much. John, I don’t even know if our booth is ready. Is it? It’s gonna be ready.
00:28:31:15 –> 00:28:32:01
Yeah. Good.
00:28:32:08 –> 00:28:44:08
Okay. So we’re gonna be standing there. Of course. We’re gonna have a giant 250 inch deer. We’re gonna have couple that close. Nevada deer. Another two. Easily 36 inch, two 20 bucks. It’s not gonna hold a candle down. Two
00:28:44:10 –> 00:28:49:19
Oh it, it’s a big Gary heavy second. Another net 2 43 net buck killed this year. How
00:28:49:19 –> 00:28:55:28
About that? Net? All on a pedestal. It’s a beautiful deer. Incredible ponant monster
00:28:56:04 –> 00:28:57:26
Knock. Yeah. Come, come by and see
00:28:57:26 –> 00:29:01:00
Him. But how about Clint’s bull on her cover? Yeah. Four January cover,
00:29:01:07 –> 00:29:04:19
Six point fresh blood on the skull cap. I mean,
00:29:05:01 –> 00:29:05:25
Bleeding all over the booth.
00:29:05:28 –> 00:29:09:22
That’s right. We want, we like him that way. None of this rafter stuff.
00:29:10:04 –> 00:29:12:13
Are we gonna talk about John’s bleeding? Not Mexico.
00:29:12:15 –> 00:29:20:26
Not yet. We gonna talk about Utah. Okay. Segueing into Utah. Utah just kicked off this last week. Friday or Thursday. Friday. You probably all know Utah.
00:29:21:00 –> 00:29:21:20
I wouldn’t apply already,
00:29:21:26 –> 00:29:23:10
Did you? No. Whoa, whoa.
00:29:23:11 –> 00:29:24:25
Well you can plug and play can’t you?
00:29:24:25 –> 00:29:26:10
Well, 10 bucks a pop. Boom, boom.
00:29:26:12 –> 00:29:33:25
Yeah, so, so I can make some amendments if I have to. 10 bucks is worth it. And guess what? Utah loves it when I give them more money.
00:29:34:05 –> 00:29:36:07
Okay, well you can do that. I just
00:29:36:07 –> 00:29:37:11
Did it in case I would forget.
00:29:37:13 –> 00:29:51:10
The regular deadline for those of you that haven’t already played is March 5th at 11:00 PM Mountain Standard time. If you miss that deadline or, or and are just doing points only, you can’t apply until March 19th. Results won’t be out till the, the end of May. No,
00:29:51:19 –> 00:29:56:25
No fee difference in points only versus applying for a unit. So we tell people, apply a
00:29:56:25 –> 00:29:59:20
Unit. That’s right. So get in for it. Sorry,
00:29:59:25 –> 00:30:01:28
I blew out your momentum here. Keep going. No,
00:30:01:28 –> 00:30:02:04
No, you,
00:30:02:05 –> 00:30:05:05
You’re crushing it. $65 non-resident hunting license.
00:30:05:05 –> 00:30:13:17
That’s right. And twofer. You get a twofer. I mean, it’s well known. Utah does not want your money that bad to charge you $65 every year. Every other state does it
00:30:13:29 –> 00:30:16:10
January one to December 31 something.
00:30:16:13 –> 00:30:17:01
I don’t know. And
00:30:17:10 –> 00:30:18:06
Would get no twofer.
00:30:18:07 –> 00:30:56:24
Everybody’s prepared to pay for it. They’re, they’re not wanting to take it. So whatever you can play the system, apply one year later in the application season the next year, apply before that expires. And it only has to be valid the day you apply for your tags. That’s it. And anyway, but however, drying odds in Utah is tough, particularly for residents. We’re, we’re residents of the state. Let’s, let’s take a straw poll with four of us right here. This is statistically valid. I think four people randomly selected within Utah. Okay. How many limited entry or once life 10 tags have you, John, Chris, in your life? Zero. Okay. John, how many of you drawn zero. Wow. And you, you guys have been a resident your whole life.
00:30:57:16 –> 00:31:04:17
I do wanna, I do. Don’t wanna quantify Whoa, quantify, qualify what they wanna draw that we, we could get ’em drawn.
00:31:04:28 –> 00:31:06:08
Oh, I know, I know this is true.
00:31:06:17 –> 00:31:09:23
But I mean, let’s do the Dolores triangle muzzle. No.
00:31:10:22 –> 00:31:17:17
No. Okay. However, and Jason, let’s talk about you and I. You got really lucky when you were a whipper snapper. Okay.
00:31:17:17 –> 00:31:18:16
15 years old. Like drew
00:31:18:25 –> 00:31:19:04
The buffalo
00:31:19:16 –> 00:31:20:02
Bison tag on
00:31:20:02 –> 00:31:21:04
Hen’s, bison and hen’s. Okay.
00:31:21:13 –> 00:31:30:20
When we got there, guys were eating their tags. The guys prior said, we haven’t seen a buffalo in 14 days. And I’m like, ah, I gotta shit. The first thing with first
00:31:30:28 –> 00:31:32:10
Brown down. Well,
00:31:32:21 –> 00:31:34:07
Yeah. First thing with a
00:31:34:18 –> 00:31:37:24
Humps on back or not is down maybe. Yeah. I
00:31:37:24 –> 00:31:39:22
Don’t remember. But it had visible
00:31:39:22 –> 00:31:40:20
Bull. It did. It did. But
00:31:40:23 –> 00:31:43:13
It was a boy and I dumped it
00:31:44:01 –> 00:31:51:19
And I drew about the same time I drew back when he first kid started applying in Utah. We could put in for, for everything. Yeah. And I drew an antelope.
00:31:52:11 –> 00:31:52:19
Come
00:31:52:19 –> 00:31:53:20
On. 14, 15. I
00:31:53:20 –> 00:31:54:06
Never knew this
00:31:54:16 –> 00:31:55:17
One of my first limited
00:31:55:22 –> 00:32:10:06
Entry. This is a skeleton in a closet that’s now skeleton. Well you’ve been embarrassed to read a known you were an embarrassed antelope hunter. An antelope connoisseur. Bronson, you’ve had antelope tags in Wyoming. Utah. Arizona. Where else?
00:32:10:13 –> 00:32:17:00
That’s it Jason, that’s a, that’s a list of 30 no shizz. 30 years. And I’ve hunted three states. All
00:32:17:01 –> 00:32:18:01
Epic antelope
00:32:18:23 –> 00:32:19:04
Calls
00:32:19:14 –> 00:32:22:22
Funnel to Bronson’s office. Mindy, do it now Jason. No,
00:32:22:26 –> 00:32:49:13
You’re awesome. No, no. Anyway, just was saying I was making my list. I was gonna rattle off three or four pads that I’ve drawn. Okay. Antelope. Okay. I, I’ve drawn four antelope, deer, elk, and a desert sheep now. Okay. However, that’s pretty impressive. However, two of those, they had to gimme the tack. Yeah. I was the last man standing for so long. Just like your desert sheep. Yeah. You got through the max point pool. Nobody else wanted
00:32:49:20 –> 00:32:50:29
Go to the Escal desert and get
00:32:50:29 –> 00:32:56:29
The buck. Yeah. Your elk, you got in the max point pool when you drew it percent archery and you drew a deer prematurely. Randomly. And I did
00:32:56:29 –> 00:33:00:17
On the the out in what they called a C W M U posted hunting unit back
00:33:00:17 –> 00:33:21:22
Then first year. So you’ve drawn about four, five tags. I’ve drawn four we’re lifetime residents of our this state. Yeah. Okay. So what we’re saying, it’s tough for residents, it’s really tough for non-residents too. However, it’s not, doesn’t break the bank necessarily to apply in Utah but, but you may just apply and forget about it. Yeah. You know meaning don’t I actually,
00:33:22:06 –> 00:33:34:10
Alright so for deer you can get a limited entry deer point. You can also apply for general deer general’s. Different story. Yes. And Adam, we’re telling guys get a point for general. Absolutely. It allows you to go hunting. Absolutely does. And nowadays for a non-resident in the best units, it’s like five points. Yeah, that’s right.
00:33:34:17 –> 00:33:34:25
Five
00:33:34:25 –> 00:33:35:17
To six. That’s right.
00:33:35:23 –> 00:33:46:17
And despite the gnashing of teeth of many people throughout the U Utah this last year and it was a tougher year, two years ago, they were singing the praises of every biologist and state
00:33:47:01 –> 00:33:47:28
Ears are back.
00:33:48:02 –> 00:33:53:01
It’s unbelievable. The good old days are now, how many times did we hear that? Two years later Somehow
00:33:53:09 –> 00:33:58:23
Shot out this last year. We’ve got all kinds of little mule deer groups popping up, having secret midnight meetings,
00:33:58:28 –> 00:34:03:16
Lynch mobs, pissed lynch mobs, you know, oust them. The governor needs to get involved.
00:34:04:08 –> 00:34:04:25
Burnt fire.
00:34:05:00 –> 00:34:05:08
Fire.
00:34:05:08 –> 00:34:05:18
Every
00:34:05:19 –> 00:34:06:04
D W R
00:34:06:11 –> 00:34:07:07
Employee. Yes. Yes.
00:34:07:08 –> 00:34:09:07
And we know there’s places that can fix be and some
00:34:09:07 –> 00:34:18:29
Of them need to be fired. Yes. I’d love to fire a couple myself. Having said that, this isn’t necessarily their fault. And keep in mind these were over the counter tags not too long ago. 25
00:34:18:29 –> 00:34:28:01
Years ago, they’re over the counter. They went to a draw and then we went 15 or 20 years on regionwide tags and we’ve only been six or eight or 10, whatever on unit by unit by unit.
00:34:28:08 –> 00:34:40:24
It’s because we’re trying to take generals and make ’em limited entry. Henry’s hunts and it And I get it. I would actually like that. Okay. I would like it. But most people want a lot of people, general public majority or a place to be able
00:34:40:24 –> 00:34:46:20
To draw these. The far the majority here. Yeah, by far the majority want to hunt more often than hunting once every 10 or 20 years. So
00:34:46:28 –> 00:35:01:11
I’m gonna throw something out there. This ought to be good. I contend Utah General Deer is as good or better at producing quality bucks as Colorado.
00:35:02:19 –> 00:35:10:10
If you’ve looked, say, if you look at the last couple years, Colorado has been rough. Really rough. Really rough.
00:35:10:20 –> 00:35:22:26
I’m gonna be the devil’s advocate here and say that Utah is not going to see that way very long. Okay. With some of the changes that they’re making right now. What do you,
00:35:22:28 –> 00:35:23:07
What
00:35:23:07 –> 00:35:24:13
Polluting to what part? Well
00:35:24:16 –> 00:35:31:18
The, the 400 extra tags in certain units, extra seasons. And then now there are
00:35:31:18 –> 00:35:32:20
Some interesting seasons.
00:35:32:23 –> 00:35:38:16
Huge, huge, huge additions to private land hunting during the rutt for an entire month.
00:35:38:20 –> 00:35:50:22
I know for the archery eyes, these extended arche and there’s, there’s gonna be the extended archery in some of these localized wintering spots where deer should be able to frolic and enjoy a little bit of snowfall and breed without harm.
00:35:50:27 –> 00:35:52:04
Breed without being threaded
00:35:52:17 –> 00:36:22:25
Are now gonna be hunted hard from the wild atch archery. Anybody that has an archery tag if they want to be. And people are gonna be standing on the boundaries of all the pri private landowners. I feel bad for ’em. How this got through without a little bit of contentious debate is beyond me. ’cause we were watching the video and it just kind of got rubber stamped. Yeah. So, but hey whatever. Let’s hunt everything anywhere and everywhere. And I think you’re right Chris, to a degree in the new hams hunts, they, they’re finding little nuances and little, little ways to inject a few more hunters. Yeah. The
00:36:22:25 –> 00:36:25:10
Early rifle season, that’s new last year.
00:36:25:18 –> 00:36:46:07
Yeah. Just the early rifles of kind of a first half of October so to speak. And, and then you got late hunts as well and then you got the muzzle orders and now with the new less restricted muzz orders, meaning any scopes, any scopes, any new muzzle orders that come out, you can do whatever you can still bait in Utah. There’s a lot of
00:36:47:17 –> 00:36:49:07
Freedoms, a lot of ways to pressure deer in
00:36:49:07 –> 00:36:49:25
Utah. A lot of freedoms,
00:36:50:05 –> 00:36:53:15
A lot of ways to hunt and pursue and kill deer in Utah. But I had
00:36:53:15 –> 00:37:07:00
A guy, I had a guy from Colorado say, y’all complain about Colorado, but look at Utah. You know, y’all producing some pretty nice bucks even on general in Utah. And you know what? He’s right. We Bronson, there was a net 233,
00:37:07:20 –> 00:37:26:24
I don’t know how many you’ve had in our office in last month that are like scored like unbelievable being scored by Wyatt. And Yeah, if you add ’em up, you can’t add up There’s gov tags, eaten tags multiple years in a row, you know, in Colorado. Yeah. It it’s happening. Yeah. Or
00:37:27:05 –> 00:37:28:14
Or under, under underachieving
00:37:28:23 –> 00:37:29:06
So to speak.
00:37:29:16 –> 00:37:30:13
Not killing historical
00:37:31:05 –> 00:37:58:19
Standard of that tag is capable of producing. Right. Yeah. And, and it’s been tough. So put that into perspective. Colorado has moderated, we get a lot of calls on Colorado and that’ll be next month when we break that down as we see the regulations in our hands. But having said that, I guess what got us on this topic is the only thing that you can regularly hunt in Utah regularly. Every one to two or three years as a resident or every two to three to five, whatever, which supple
00:37:58:19 –> 00:38:02:19
Non-residents, which supplements your four to five special tags you’ve talked about over your lifetime. That’s
00:38:02:19 –> 00:38:29:14
Right. Well yeah, we get generals every year only because we got lifetime licenses before they did away with them. Jason and I. Yeah. But but also if we get enrolled, John, you and Chris, you’re in dedicated a hunter program. You don’t get that every time you’re off your three years. But usually, you know, you can have that, you know, after maybe sitting out one year, maybe two max, you can get on that. And then I enjoy through years of consistent hunting a unit and try to doing well. Killing a buck kill two bucks bucks every three years. That’s right.
00:38:29:24 –> 00:38:51:00
So yeah, there’s some opportunity here. The nice thing about Colorado and, and I will contend here in Utah, you’re gonna have to scout to do that to, to have a good hunt. Yeah, it is. It is. You are hunting with the masses. You are in Colorado too. But the nice thing is the dates in Colorado allow for guys to, to not be quite as serious on the scouting and still do fairly well and knock down a nice deer. Show up and
00:38:51:00 –> 00:38:51:13
Hunt. Yeah.
00:38:51:15 –> 00:39:50:17
Yeah. I mean rutt seasons come on. So, alright. Have we grounded out enough? We, we’ve grinded through Utah. There’s just a lot of op, it’s hard to talk about everything that’s in here. We covered it in probably about what Bronson? 35 pages. Yeah, A lot. I don’t know. There was a lot. And you know, we, we also, how Utah Big games record book, go to Utah big game record records.com or Buddy Rusty Hall out there has an incredible book, I must say absolutely would spend the money on this Utah big game records.com. It’s 50 bucks. Absolutely awesome, awesome stories. I got a couple bucks in there. Thanks Rusty. Of course appreciate him, his support of epic and vice versa. So happy to support him. But there is a lot of opportunity in Utah. Non-residents could apply for everything. Residents are actually kind of opposite of New Mexico residents are restricted in the fact that we have to choose a one, one of the once in lifetimes and then one dear elk or antelope to apply for.
00:39:50:17 –> 00:40:15:25
That’s, we break it all down. Deer, elk, antelope, both species of sheep, moose, goat, bison, all that. 38 pages. It looks like all of Utah tables specific unit breakdowns, season dates, tag numbers, bonus point odds, random odds, both for resident, non-resident harvest success, average age bucks, bulls, all that’s there. That’s what you get for a membership. And that’s, we’re just talking about Utah here.
00:40:16:26 –> 00:40:52:06
Mexico’s 33 pages. That’s right. Very aggressive every single month. And Oregon. Bronson teases me a little bit about talking about Oregon. We do love our Oregon brothers up there. They kill some monster deer, especially with some governor tech special season dates. They prove that they’re out there, they grow. There’s, there’s a lot of private ground in Oregon that harbors a few giants in over the counter type units. There’s a lot of over the counter archery hunts up there. Absolutely great potential. But we don’t know what to do with a bunch of points that we have because there’s not hunts out there that will yield a decent chance at killing a big deer without some private land or some insider information. That’s right.
00:40:52:19 –> 00:41:25:13
We did break down the deer, elk, antelope, sheep and goat stuff, you know, all broken down for Oregon, it’s tough for a non-resident to justify starting, implying in Oregon. There’s no question about it. Non-resident hunting license is $172 for non-residents. That’s just before you start applying. Then it’s $8 per application after that. If you’ve got a, a general season type pun in mind and you’re gonna be buying it anyway. Great. If you’re gonna apply for sheep and goat and, and you want to add a deer and elk point, it probably makes sense. Otherwise it, it’s one of those that’s not a must apply for state. That’s just simply put. So.
00:41:26:01 –> 00:41:27:07
All right John, let’s, let’s get
00:41:27:07 –> 00:41:34:04
To some stories. So, I dunno, we’ve got a couple, we’ve got a, we’ve got Johns and let’s start with that and then we got the Rodio grill.
00:41:34:09 –> 00:41:37:19
That concept is pretty awesome. Yeah, here we go. Hey John. Go for it. Let’s
00:41:37:19 –> 00:41:39:13
Talk about co deer hunting first of
00:41:39:13 –> 00:41:39:28
All. In general.
00:41:40:01 –> 00:41:46:16
Yeah, in general. All right. It was my first kous deer hunt. It’s like hunting a raccoon with handlers.
00:41:46:25 –> 00:41:47:04
Okay.
00:41:47:29 –> 00:41:49:25
Those little suckers. How how much bigger,
00:41:50:04 –> 00:41:56:00
How much bigger was that kous deer than the halina you shot? Did you get some more meat off Thelina?
00:41:56:00 –> 00:41:56:14
Not a lot. Yeah.
00:41:57:01 –> 00:41:57:23
I mean they’re
00:41:57:23 –> 00:41:59:29
Good eating. Did you eat veers down there? They’re incredible.
00:42:00:03 –> 00:42:01:11
No, the kous deer or Hae
00:42:01:11 –> 00:42:02:04
No, the halina and
00:42:02:08 –> 00:42:03:05
No, not Halina. The
00:42:03:05 –> 00:42:06:29
Halina smell. Oh. Like nothing else I’ve ever smelled before
00:42:07:07 –> 00:42:10:23
I’d, that’s why I don’t wanna shoot one. ’cause I don’t want have to take care of one. Well
00:42:10:23 –> 00:42:11:02
I’d rather
00:42:11:02 –> 00:42:12:10
Eat a Kyle than a ha one.
00:42:13:23 –> 00:42:22:07
That’s right. But the cous deer are incredible. Yeah. They’re them on a pellet grill. Smoked. I might have that tonight.
00:42:22:23 –> 00:42:23:06
Come on.
00:42:23:07 –> 00:42:24:28
They’re incredible. John. So Mexico,
00:42:25:07 –> 00:42:25:13
So
00:42:25:15 –> 00:42:35:29
Had a good friend that’s been down there several times, got an invite, had a good friend, was a little bit on the gag order ranking of things. John and I were Jason and I, the rest of it, I don’t even know if John’s wife really knew where he was going.
00:42:36:21 –> 00:42:45:22
John let, I’m gonna be honest, let’s pay picture. John acts like he doesn’t know where the heck he was going. Doesn’t know, act like he knows when he was going. Doesn’t act like he ain’t even knows what species he had attack for.
00:42:45:27 –> 00:42:58:01
This is him going down. And then he comes back and the first thing we see when he comes in, John walks in with a black eye and we’re like, and we didn’t know about this. We’re like, John, what the, what the h what
00:42:58:07 –> 00:42:59:01
Happened? Are you still married?
00:42:59:11 –> 00:43:04:24
What happened down there? You know, talk about your hump first. And, but then we get about
00:43:04:24 –> 00:43:05:25
The border crossing. How about that?
00:43:05:25 –> 00:43:34:10
So the border crossing, anybody who’s going down there and is gonna cross things have changed this year from what I hear. Spend some time. It took us a day to cross the border pretty much. And you’re basically sitting in line waiting. Yeah. You weren’t even in line. We were just kind of set off to the side. And you’re being, and you’re waiting for the Mexican army to come and check down and work for about 15 minutes. And it takes six hours for ’em to get there. I always tell people, if you can fly, fly,
00:43:34:29 –> 00:43:46:00
Geez, it’s not worth. Yeah. But the problem is when you’re going to that far northern Chihuahua or Sonora, there’s no place to fly. There’s no, you’re not gonna fly, fly to Herma Seal drive all the way back to the Arizona border. Right?
00:43:46:00 –> 00:43:48:08
Yeah. And if you’re taking quads and you’re taking Yeah,
00:43:48:08 –> 00:43:48:25
All that which you
00:43:48:29 –> 00:44:06:10
Go that kind, which, which we did. ’cause you know, my buddy’s been gonna the same place for, you know, 10 years or whatever it is. And they’ve got it figured out. They take all their own stuff and it’s, it’s freaking awesome. And you, you just gotta drive across. You gotta have your own vehicles, you gotta have your own stuff. You know, someone wrecks your foot,
00:44:06:23 –> 00:44:11:05
You know, it’s pretty awesome. Yeah, it is pretty awesome. I’ll, so who was your, who was your chauffeur?
00:44:11:15 –> 00:44:22:07
So, so before I go, I, I didn’t want to talk about it a lot ’cause you guys will like get my wife riled up that it’s so dangerous. And then next thing I know I’m not going,
00:44:22:17 –> 00:44:23:06
It’s not
00:44:23:10 –> 00:44:31:23
Dangerous. Adam and I are like, Kay, it’s, we really have a backup graphic design. Okay. What are your passwords to your computer? I don’t wanna learn how to use a Mac, but, but I might have to.
00:44:31:24 –> 00:44:50:23
Okay. Chris. Chris, you’re on house arrest ’cause nothing can happen to you. It’s kinda like when the president and the vice president can never be in the same place at once. One’s in a bunker somewhere while one of ’em is out in, in plain view of everybody. That’s right. With cross airs on them. That’s right. They never supposed to cross merge and be sitting next to each other unless they’re in bulletproof
00:44:51:12 –> 00:44:54:29
Vehicles. Armor apparatus. Apparat. That’s right. And so it’s a John, this
00:44:54:29 –> 00:44:59:04
Is kinda like us with our graphic designers. We can’t lose two at once. No. It’s just not, not a good idea.
00:44:59:10 –> 00:45:09:17
So Chris normally accompanied me down there in Mexico and with my interpreter, we wouldn’t let Chris go with John. So John, you’re on your own, you know French, but you do not know Spanish. Do not know.
00:45:09:17 –> 00:45:09:25
Good luck
00:45:09:25 –> 00:45:19:00
To you. The funny thing, John, we we came home the first day we came back and we had Mexican here in town. Me, me, you and John. And John ordered in, in Spanish.
00:45:19:12 –> 00:45:21:13
I know, I know. He ordered, she’s like,
00:45:22:08 –> 00:45:29:24
She jumped on that in Spanish and Jason and I just like, whoa John. He’s freaking, he’s fluent, he’s fluent in Rito taco enchilada,
00:45:30:07 –> 00:45:44:28
You know, she’s like, I am so proud of you. But what happened to your eye? What happened to your eye? I think you were drinking a little too much tequila and we’re like, I don’t know. I don’t know. Yeah. This is interesting. What did happen, John? Okay, so you had a, so you had an,
00:45:45:22 –> 00:46:07:16
So the other thing, so safety wise, our, the ranch owner had it all set up. Yeah. Did have a, a great guy. Just so cool. But spent 10 years in prison in us, you know, in the US and he was, he was, but he knew the ins and outs. Funny as heck. Yeah. And everybody knows him. So he was there every time we crossed the border. Every time we drove around. Did
00:46:07:16 –> 00:46:08:26
You have any interesting border crossing
00:46:08:26 –> 00:46:09:28
Doors? So is Jen gonna listen to
00:46:10:11 –> 00:46:10:18
My
00:46:10:18 –> 00:46:13:04
Spray bottle? Oh my gosh, John, if I’m safe to say this is your last trip to make,
00:46:13:17 –> 00:46:16:24
If Jen’s not gonna listen, none of you. You say any that
00:46:16:25 –> 00:46:18:29
We won’t. I mean Jen, but she doesn’t listen to the podcast.
00:46:19:13 –> 00:46:31:05
No. So, so anyway, I really didn’t feel, I felt, you know, safe the whole time. Yeah. It it is odd though, you know, you’re driving, you go through the checkpoint and then you drive for two hours and
00:46:31:26 –> 00:46:32:22
You get pulled over again.
00:46:32:27 –> 00:46:39:17
The federal rallies are there at a, you know, at a stop and you have to get out all your guns again and you know, did
00:46:39:17 –> 00:46:41:07
You ever have to pay him? Like give him a little money?
00:46:41:14 –> 00:46:54:08
No, but apparently they used to. Yeah. You know, a little whiskey would go a long ways and this year they, you know, none of that’s going on anymore. And, and so border crossing’s gone from an hour to six hours.
00:46:54:20 –> 00:46:54:29
Yeah.
00:46:55:14 –> 00:47:07:13
And so anyway, but that’s weird. And then you got one kid that they’re all got their faces covered and stuff and one kid’s got his cell phone like taking pictures of all the guns and that’s Army. Yeah. One of the army guys, federal
00:47:07:13 –> 00:47:08:00
Allies kid,
00:47:08:16 –> 00:47:09:16
You know, just, oh
00:47:09:17 –> 00:47:11:02
My god. Anyway, interesting. I,
00:47:11:09 –> 00:47:13:12
That’s going on Facebook, you know, I don’t dunno.
00:47:13:21 –> 00:47:16:08
So you go on. So, so let’s jump into the hunt. You go upstairs.
00:47:16:10 –> 00:47:23:01
So we get down there and, and from what they all said, it was a really slow year. We’ve heard that in a lot. It was phenomenal.
00:47:23:12 –> 00:47:23:28
Whoa. Really?
00:47:24:04 –> 00:47:31:05
For you. We were seeing deer. I’m used to the morning being hot and you’re hunting out in the desert of Nevada or Utah. It’s nothing
00:47:31:11 –> 00:47:31:18
For
00:47:31:18 –> 00:47:39:17
Eight hours. And, and some days I don’t see a deer. Yeah. And all day long, you know, we’re glassing up deer. Yeah. So
00:47:40:02 –> 00:47:40:19
Wild kingdom,
00:47:40:23 –> 00:47:49:07
It was phenomenal. Except I can’t wait to glass up mule deer Now how many lions did you see? Geez, our group glassed up. Three lions come on different
00:47:49:07 –> 00:47:49:28
Times. Not
00:47:49:28 –> 00:47:51:08
Like a different times different. Like a
00:47:51:08 –> 00:47:53:00
Female with kittens. We’re talking three different
00:47:53:00 –> 00:48:18:23
Kittens. No. Yeah, three lions. The ranch owners got dogs there. And so one of the days we tried to get on one of the lions and they just didn’t, they couldn’t pick up the scent. But you know, we’re radiant down to the ranch, Hey, get the dogs up here and stuff. Yeah. But So I thought I was on a lion hunt too. And, but it didn’t happen any And the year before they killed a B N C bear. Come on. No. And, and it’s on the wall. The thing is giant just
00:48:18:24 –> 00:48:20:13
Prickly pair eater drift down from
00:48:21:07 –> 00:48:21:22
Arizona.
00:48:22:06 –> 00:48:22:22
Apparently there’s northern,
00:48:23:19 –> 00:48:34:00
Apparently there are a lot of bears down there. Just tons of bears. Yeah. Awesome. Anyway. Freaking cool. So anyway, I killed a buck. Great buck. So 1 0 4,
00:48:34:21 –> 00:48:37:28
Extra eye guard two and a kicker. Kicker. Got some
00:48:37:28 –> 00:48:38:11
Double points.
00:48:38:19 –> 00:48:40:14
I know somebody like thater gotta kill anything with
00:48:40:14 –> 00:48:47:19
A kicker, some bleeding. So, I mean, just phenomenal time. How about any, any, and then did they have some cattle guards down there?
00:48:48:20 –> 00:48:50:10
How do they keep cattle where they’re supposed to be
00:48:50:17 –> 00:49:01:25
At? So the interesting thing, everything in Mexico is, is like barely get by. Yeah. You know, and it was funny. Just we could learn as Americans, we could learn from it. I don’t know.
00:49:02:05 –> 00:49:04:04
Thriftiness goes to another level. There’s,
00:49:04:04 –> 00:49:27:00
There’s like no oversight. No, no, no regulations. And I, I was just right before this cattle guard incident, I was talking to one of the guys and in the ranch house, there’s some, you know, electrical work, just hanging wires, exposed wires and stuff like that, you know. And I, and I said everybody, I think they just get along. There’s no regulations and, and they’re all fine. There’s
00:49:27:00 –> 00:49:27:25
No building inspector.
00:49:27:25 –> 00:49:34:29
Yeah, no building inspectors. Yeah. They live a happy life without any oversight. That’s right. And then, and then, and
00:49:34:29 –> 00:49:38:01
Then so then you’re dark and you’re,
00:49:38:04 –> 00:49:52:11
We went heavily hunting. And then I’m on the bike in fourth gear. I’m on the bike. I’m on a four-wheeler and it was getting dusk. And we’re cruising back to the ranch. Towards the ranch. Towards the ranch. Yeah. Well, are you on the bike by yourself? Yeah, I’m on the bike by myself.
00:49:52:21 –> 00:49:54:01
Guns strapped on the front. Guns
00:49:54:16 –> 00:50:02:08
On front case, right? Yeah. Well there every cattle guard they’ve used the least amount of steel possible
00:50:02:08 –> 00:50:05:04
For sure. What they’ve done is taken one cattle guard and cut it into
00:50:05:05 –> 00:50:06:08
Pieces and used
00:50:06:08 –> 00:50:08:17
It in three different places on the ranch. Hundred percent.
00:50:08:18 –> 00:50:19:25
Like so, or even pieces of an old horse trailer or whatever. It’s, it’s, it’s wide enough that it truck your’s not where the tires go over. If you got a trailer, you really gotta watch out ’cause it’s gonna hit the side. You got
00:50:19:25 –> 00:50:22:10
A four wheeler? A four wheeler? Yeah. What happens, John? So,
00:50:22:19 –> 00:50:27:04
So I’m cruising. It’s getting dark. I mean, you’re hauling, right? No, I, I wasn’t going that fast. 15.
00:50:27:04 –> 00:50:29:06
Great. Bright headlight. Brand new headlight, I imagine.
00:50:29:28 –> 00:50:30:05
Huh?
00:50:30:27 –> 00:50:31:23
Hitting on all
00:50:31:23 –> 00:50:32:08
Eight. Come
00:50:32:08 –> 00:50:32:13
On.
00:50:33:01 –> 00:50:33:13
Anyway.
00:50:34:05 –> 00:50:42:22
No, you’ve got a, let me painting this pitch. You’ve got a mag light duct tape to the front behind the bars with de cell batteries that have been, should have been replaced a year ago.
00:50:43:24 –> 00:50:49:01
He’s probably got a kerosene ladder. He is over there pumping, pumping with pumping and keeping the gas going. More hand
00:50:49:01 –> 00:50:49:08
Driving.
00:50:50:23 –> 00:51:01:25
So this is so stupid. I’m such an idiot. I don’t even know why we’re talking about it because, anyway, so I’m going, there’s a gr there’s a great big, there’s this crossing big sign in Spanish on the side. And I look up, what does that mean?
00:51:01:29 –> 00:51:02:07
Read
00:51:02:07 –> 00:51:04:22
The Spanish sign, which I can’t even freaking read. What,
00:51:04:22 –> 00:51:06:26
What is danger? What, what would that mean? Chris?
00:51:10:10 –> 00:51:17:08
Hi. Hello. And I hit the cattle guard and my tire just misses the, the little patch of cattle guard.
00:51:17:22 –> 00:51:20:22
And it’s, oh, it’s a what, how deep of a trench? It’s
00:51:20:28 –> 00:51:21:26
Probably two feet deep.
00:51:22:10 –> 00:51:25:10
And are you, and it’s steep. Is it concrete? It’s like a concrete
00:51:25:10 –> 00:51:40:28
Hole. No, it’s, it’s dirt. It’s dirt. Just a hole. It’s like a ditch, but it’s deep. Yeah. And my front tire. Are you full bore goes off of that? No, I’m probably going 15, 20 miles an hour. Oh, okay. I’m not going that fast. Not too bad. Yeah. I mean, luckily, well, the bike stops immediately. Yeah. And I keep going. You
00:51:41:00 –> 00:51:42:01
Flew over the handlebars.
00:51:42:01 –> 00:51:43:24
I flew over the handlebars. My face
00:51:45:05 –> 00:51:45:22
Whiplash
00:51:45:26 –> 00:51:48:02
Onto your hit the, the gun case and breaks it.
00:51:49:15 –> 00:51:51:10
Is this a pelican case? Like what kind of
00:51:51:11 –> 00:51:53:26
No, it’s, it’s your error case, luckily.
00:51:54:03 –> 00:51:55:25
Oh, you didn’t airline. Sorry. Yeah, I didn’t airline
00:51:55:25 –> 00:52:09:11
Case though, so, but it’s a hard case. It’s a hard plastic case. Okay. Luckily it wasn’t, it wasn’t a pelican case, otherwise it would’ve broke my face, I think. But it gave it some cushion and, and the case, you know, the case cracked open and, and smashed it.
00:52:09:19 –> 00:52:14:22
And then you, you hit, you whiplash over things. Slammed onto this slammed thing and flew over the bike onto the
00:52:14:22 –> 00:52:16:13
Ground. No, I didn’t, I didn’t go all the way
00:52:17:00 –> 00:52:18:12
Flashed and came back pretty
00:52:18:12 –> 00:52:20:29
Much my face. I just kissed the ding boom. That was
00:52:21:07 –> 00:52:22:22
A full on yard cell in the ditch
00:52:23:17 –> 00:52:25:29
Probably. And bike went sideways. And, and you
00:52:25:29 –> 00:52:27:25
Were alone or somebody right behind you? Or you alone?
00:52:27:26 –> 00:52:31:26
No, I was alone. The other guy was ahead and just kept going, you know, and fuels
00:52:31:26 –> 00:52:34:04
Dripping out of those of the knocked the vent
00:52:34:04 –> 00:52:36:10
Knocked. I mean, you’re disoriented, but it knocked your
00:52:37:02 –> 00:52:47:22
Yeah, I didn’t knock the out or anything like that. No, just, just, I, but it happened so fast. I didn’t know what hit me. And it took me a couple seconds to be like, like, oh, what the crap happened to me. That was
00:52:47:26 –> 00:52:49:12
A half, that was a half-ass cater car.
00:52:52:17 –> 00:52:54:26
So the ranch owner,
00:52:54:28 –> 00:53:08:06
I’m always, I’ve always, I’ve got this fear that I’m gonna do that at nighttime and, and there’s gonna be a barb wire gate up and I’m gonna blow yourself. How has it not happened? How has it not happened? ’cause we’ve all been there. Every hunter in the world has been there. Yeah.
00:53:08:08 –> 00:53:12:16
Yeah. I had a, we had a friend in high school that did that with a snowmobile. Hit a fence.
00:53:13:05 –> 00:53:14:12
Come on. Killed him.
00:53:14:17 –> 00:53:17:26
No, come on. He survived. But dane cut his neck bad, like,
00:53:18:18 –> 00:53:18:26
Come
00:53:18:26 –> 00:53:30:10
On bad. So, John, you’re there you are, you’ve yard sailed inside. Yeah. You’ve yard sailed all around. The cattle guard wheels spinning. I can picture the bikes off. Yeah. Fuel’s dripping. The wheels spinning.
00:53:30:28 –> 00:53:32:14
Mag light flew off. Yeah. So
00:53:32:14 –> 00:53:35:12
1130 at night, I get with the kerosene ladder that’s got a broken
00:53:36:13 –> 00:53:45:19
Mantle, got the bike back straight and got on it and drove back and anyway, so it, it was all good. But man, my pride was hurt, you know.
00:53:45:27 –> 00:53:47:24
But you didn’t look that bad that night probably.
00:53:47:28 –> 00:53:53:05
No, I didn’t, didn’t look that bad. But man in the morning just blacker than black. Yeah.
00:53:53:09 –> 00:53:57:12
As you woke up and everybody thought you ran out in the middle of the night. Yeah. A fight with somebody.
00:53:58:13 –> 00:53:59:17
But, but good
00:53:59:17 –> 00:54:03:19
Thing is you can turn that into the insurance. Right? You probably got 10 insurance on a bike. Old Black Luck.
00:54:05:05 –> 00:54:06:10
That’s the good thing about it. Yeah.
00:54:06:13 –> 00:54:09:05
The good thing is in Mexico. So they covered that stuff. Right?
00:54:10:22 –> 00:54:15:18
You, you report that to authorities. Make a little police report, turn it into the insurance company all well get
00:54:15:19 –> 00:54:21:29
A, get a translator to put it from Spanish back to English so you can take it back. Stay fun. Call it a day.
00:54:22:08 –> 00:55:02:20
No, it, it, it was nice. I mean, e everybody was so cool that I’ve never been with a, like, just a great group of guys. Nicer than heck. Yeah. And it was a fun time. And I think that’s what Mexico’s about too. Yeah. Is Oh yeah. Is you go with guys and you just relax and, and we ate burritos like crazy. And there was a cook and ranch house. And one of the other really cool things, you know, at lunch, the, the cook would make everybody burritos and, and, and put ’em in tinfoil. Yeah. And then during the day we’d build a little fire and instead of cooking in the tinfoil, they’d just smash out the coals and put the burritos right on the coals. Wow. And it, you know, toast ’em up. So somehow
00:55:02:28 –> 00:55:05:29
It works down there, you know, up here. You’d do that and you’d, the
00:55:05:29 –> 00:55:09:11
Help the health department shuts you down for 45 days minimum. I
00:55:09:11 –> 00:55:16:02
Can taste bark. John, tell us one thing. So you very interesting stories, I imagine from this chauffeur.
00:55:16:17 –> 00:55:28:26
Oh my gosh. So the dude, the dude that spent the time in prison. Yeah. So we’re sitting there and we’ve got time to talk ’cause we’re waiting six hours or whatever it was, you know, just for the, for the guys to, to come and check us out.
00:55:28:28 –> 00:55:31:01
Out. You gotta have lunch and, and dinner. Yeah.
00:55:31:17 –> 00:55:59:22
And so he’s telling us stories and, and the one that was really funny, he’s like, yeah, we used to mess with the border guard, you know, border guards on the US side all the time, you know, he said one time we took marijuana, mixed it with water and we, we replaced the guys. There’s guys that will go up and clean your windshield Yeah. And try to get a dollar or whatever, you know. So he replaced all their water with marijuana water come on. And then sent ’em to the line where they’re lined up to go. So they spray
00:55:59:22 –> 00:56:01:25
Every down, they scraped every vehicle with
00:56:02:04 –> 00:56:02:19
Marijuana. Come
00:56:02:19 –> 00:56:04:06
On. Dogs are going crazy.
00:56:04:09 –> 00:56:09:23
Dogs are going, you know, crazy. The border guards are beating the dogs. You know, they’re, because
00:56:09:23 –> 00:56:14:06
They’re checking everything and they’re clean. And these dogs are freaking getting whipped. Like,
00:56:17:17 –> 00:56:18:25
Come on. It’s so
00:56:18:25 –> 00:56:19:04
Funny.
00:56:19:25 –> 00:56:21:23
He says, you can hear inside the vehicles, they can hear
00:56:21:23 –> 00:56:29:23
Inside the vehicle. Yeah, that’s what, that’s what they say. Like, if you’re smuggling stuff, they’re gonna hear your conversations and you’re line, they’ve got listening devices and they record it. So.
00:56:29:25 –> 00:56:32:29
Wow. All right. Well what an epic experience. Yeah. It was
00:56:33:09 –> 00:56:33:26
The, I’ll
00:56:33:26 –> 00:56:35:08
Mention glad you’re safe, get back to work is
00:56:35:08 –> 00:56:44:22
Right after I wrecked one of the other guys killed 140 inch co deer. That’s, and I, I’ve never held anything like,
00:56:44:22 –> 00:56:45:26
Oh no. The pictures are
00:56:46:02 –> 00:56:47:13
Unbelievable, as big as that. As as
00:56:47:13 –> 00:56:48:06
Big a deer as they’ve ever killed.
00:56:48:06 –> 00:56:53:29
There’s points everywhere. They killed a 1 43 there too a couple years ago. But I mean,
00:56:53:29 –> 00:56:55:04
Just unbelievable. It’s
00:56:55:04 –> 00:56:56:05
The freak of nature. Oh
00:56:56:05 –> 00:56:56:25
Yeah. And
00:56:56:25 –> 00:56:59:04
That’s with’s at least six inches broken off.
00:56:59:22 –> 00:57:00:20
Wow. Yeah.
00:57:00:25 –> 00:57:04:06
Like a two 50 or 74 inch mul there.
00:57:04:21 –> 00:57:06:07
Yeah. Well, just amazing.
00:57:06:17 –> 00:57:06:26
I’m trying
00:57:06:26 –> 00:57:07:06
To relate
00:57:08:08 –> 00:57:09:02
That. Just amazing.
00:57:09:14 –> 00:57:20:25
That is an epic deer. So unbelievable. Anyway, congratulations on what a great hunt. Glad you’re back. We do have a lot of things going. One thing,
00:57:23:24 –> 00:57:24:16
Speaking of the lab podcast,
00:57:24:26 –> 00:57:25:25
The Rodio,
00:57:27:07 –> 00:57:48:05
Do we need, is that a common enough restaurant for people to know? I think there’s another Peruvian one that’s very similar that I can’t remember the name. I saw an advertisement of it other day. There’s Brazilian, there’s, there’s Brazilian one, Vegas. That’s is Rhode, Brazilian or Peruvian? Yeah, it’s Brazilian. Brazilian. There’s another one I think’s Peruvian that’s similar. It’s another meat. I saw it the other day. Anyway, always
00:57:48:05 –> 00:57:48:25
Some interesting meat, but
00:57:48:25 –> 00:57:55:01
Rhode is Brazilian. Okay. Brazil’s known for other things. Soccer.
00:57:56:03 –> 00:57:58:26
Okay. Where you going with this?
00:57:59:08 –> 00:58:08:04
They had the, it wasn’t the World Cup down there this year. I don’t know. I’m not a soccer fan, but anyway. But they’re known for their various types of meats, apparently.
00:58:08:04 –> 00:58:18:04
That’s right. And we were talking about the wolves in Colorado, and imagine being a wolf. Okay. I got up a timber, I’m a timber wolf. I have my family and friends with me, and we’re coming to Colorado.
00:58:18:12 –> 00:58:20:14
Okay. I’m jumping out of these little crates
00:58:20:18 –> 00:58:24:26
Because the, the, the naturalists love me and they want me here. And they’ve taken
00:58:24:28 –> 00:58:29:05
Me from the places in Yellowstone or Canada where there’s lots of wolves on my
00:58:29:05 –> 00:58:37:17
Mom. Competi competition, getting in fights all the time. And there’s lots smaller elk numbers, a lot smaller deer numbers. ’cause we ate ’em outta house and home. So now
00:58:37:17 –> 00:58:38:26
We try to kill each other to eat.
00:58:39:01 –> 00:58:51:20
And I come to Colorado where there’s tens and twenties of thousands of elk, lots of deer, some mooses, some sheep and goats and antelope. And I could have anything I want. And
00:58:51:21 –> 00:58:56:10
Mutton and beef cattle and dogs and cats. And they’re thinking this coyote’s getting aggressive.
00:58:58:17 –> 00:58:58:24
Oh,
00:58:59:03 –> 00:58:59:10
And
00:58:59:10 –> 00:59:15:17
These, this is not a coyote. This is 15 coyotes in one. Okay. And they’re running in packs of six to nine. Okay. And they’re coming after us. I mean, the Rodio Grill Colorado is the Rodio grill of the west
00:59:15:25 –> 00:59:16:01
For
00:59:16:02 –> 00:59:16:14
Wolves.
00:59:16:23 –> 00:59:28:14
It’s gonna happen. Huh. It’s unfortunate and it’s sad. Your last podcast, we talked about that. It’s, it’s true that I don’t know how that got on our minds today, but that was a perfect parallel.
00:59:28:15 –> 00:59:39:23
Well, dude, when you, and you said it right, there’s some natural barriers you like, let’s say western Utah. Western Utah will be somewhat protected. But you know what, the guys on the eastern side and the northern,
00:59:40:14 –> 00:59:42:00
The un mountain range, they’re,
00:59:42:00 –> 00:59:43:19
They’re gonna see some wolves. They are. Yeah.
00:59:44:03 –> 00:59:52:06
Well, you get Wyoming and even though we’ve had wolves pioneer from Wyoming down into Utah, they they have, and they’ve gotten into trouble. They pioneered all the way down. But
00:59:52:06 –> 00:59:53:01
There’s the red desert. Yeah.
00:59:53:08 –> 01:00:19:19
It’s kind of open prairie. It’s a semi boundary. They’re not, there’s no boundaries for wolves. But as far as all, there’s no mountain corridors. Right. All the way through. Right. And so to some extent it’s, you know, we’re talking 25, 30 years now, and they’re still barely starting to show up in packs there or breeding. Right. Okay. Now you put that in epicenter, they’re not gonna stay there. There’s linking into New Mexico, they’re protected, they’re linking into,
01:00:19:19 –> 01:00:26:17
They’re protected, really protected Utah. Whereas at least some of these stragglers in Utah have been harassed a little. You know what I’m saying? And they’re
01:00:26:18 –> 01:00:27:11
Solos. Yeah. They
01:00:27:11 –> 01:00:27:19
Can’t,
01:00:27:21 –> 01:00:35:07
Or, or very minimal. And they get into trouble and they, they kill ’em. Or a coyote hunter mistaken one, you know, for a 25 pound pound coyote.
01:00:36:24 –> 01:00:39:26
Okay. Mistakes have happened anyway. Anyway.
01:00:41:13 –> 01:00:55:04
But, but yes. The, the problem is that is Colorado’s, it’s all, when you start thinking about the whys, why didn’t they pick Nevada? Because they are not gonna do well in there. They’re not gonna
01:00:55:11 –> 01:01:18:00
Gonna do well in Nevada. That’s the one thing Nevada can complain about. Elk and deer numbers and things like that. And their habitat doesn’t allow for it. For high, high numbers of it. But you’re also not the epic. But it’s because yeah, you’re not the epicenter. And Nevada’s pretty aggressive. I know. Largely controlled by Democrats in certain cities such as Reno and Vegas. I get that. But it, they’re still very proactive, very aggressive
01:01:18:24 –> 01:01:20:06
Locally it feels like. Yeah.
01:01:20:06 –> 01:02:00:27
Yeah. It does feel like that End game and fish and end now. But Colorado Parks and Wildlife obviously hands off stance. Bring what may and we’ll manage it the best we can. Whereas if I was them, I would be scared taking a stance and say, bring him, but realize we’ve enjoyed some good populations of different critters. And that is gonna change. It has to change and it will change. And so anyway, but, but having said that, they are gonna take a neutral stance, so to speak. And I guess let the public dictate what’s coming or what’s not. Versus sound bio biology. I don’t know. Bronson, take it away.
01:02:01:03 –> 01:02:08:04
I don’t know. We, we’ve hammered it. I don’t wanna add end on another down note. ’cause these podcasts are supposed to be light, fun, energetic, full of,
01:02:08:12 –> 01:02:11:11
Well, there’s gotta be some more Chris stories. He’s not married yet.
01:02:12:29 –> 01:02:32:06
The stories don’t, okay, let’s, let’s pick on Chris from, he doesn’t, hasn’t talked enough. So here a few podcasts to go on a rambling rant on the way back from Las Vegas at the shop show, we introduced a concept. In theory, it’s not a refined theory at all, but the theory, the premise behind this little game
01:02:33:11 –> 01:02:33:22
Throw
01:02:33:27 –> 01:02:34:26
Was a tag out
01:02:34:26 –> 01:02:34:29
There
01:02:36:18 –> 01:02:55:22
Here at Epic Outdoors, donate a species and in a certain state that you probably don’t care as much about. But it doesn’t have to be that. It doesn’t, we’ve encouraged Wyatt to put his dear points in Utah on the line with the commitment that we would go help him. ’cause that’s part of this little games rule. So anyway,
01:02:56:24 –> 01:02:57:15
I even told
01:02:57:15 –> 01:03:15:08
Species in a state on the, on the table that you let the crew decide where you’re gonna apply and for what species. But the caveat is, if if you let ’em do it, they gotta come with you on the hunt. So it’s not gonna be something where you’re gonna be looking for a ghost for 10 straight days. ’cause that guy’s gotta be there with you.
01:03:15:09 –> 01:03:32:23
That’s right. And I even told Wyatt, you apply, let me know and I’ll on my hunts, I’ll apply around you. And so, and he still, he didn’t, he balked for a day or two and I went and applied because that’s right. Then I got scared that I would have to have to help him for about a month. You know what I mean? He
01:03:32:23 –> 01:03:37:14
Might do a open sight, open sight, hams hunt on a foy or something.
01:03:37:21 –> 01:03:38:19
Come on. Just because
01:03:38:20 –> 01:03:43:18
You’d cut your teeth over there as a young buck. 14 to 50. And he’s gonna want your expertise in the book list.
01:03:44:03 –> 01:03:48:17
Come on. I beat Well seriously from that, cut my teeth. Well you, that was your first
01:03:48:20 –> 01:03:55:00
Buck. Am I not right? You told the story on a podcast. So I’m just saying he he’s taking, he’s gonna, I’m gonna take,
01:03:55:08 –> 01:03:59:12
I haven’t been there since I know John, I haven’t even been there since. Anyway, I’d have to get out on it.
01:03:59:17 –> 01:04:07:09
So let’s tell, let’s put Chris on the spot. Chris, what are you gonna put on the table? Everybody’s gotta give something. Everybody’s gotta a second. Chris may not
01:04:07:10 –> 01:04:08:08
Want our help. What are you guys,
01:04:08:08 –> 01:04:20:01
What are you guys, what are you guys giving? I already give our time. I already gave mine. Mine was the first one on the table and I still have nobody. My Montana Moose. Montana. Okay. That was the first. It’s a once in lifetime species.
01:04:20:03 –> 01:04:20:26
You know what I, I challenge
01:04:21:08 –> 01:04:21:25
Somebody else to put
01:04:21:25 –> 01:04:26:13
A, people have hit me up about point boosting possibly in Nevada putting their points up with mine. And you
01:04:26:13 –> 01:04:27:00
Can’t even do it now.
01:04:27:11 –> 01:04:29:26
Nobody’s hit you on moose. Not one person,
01:04:30:22 –> 01:04:36:09
Not one. Bring it. I mean, I’ll give you the meat. Well, some of it, there’s
01:04:36:09 –> 01:04:39:29
A lot of guys even in our hometown I’ll you from Montana that I’m surprised I haven’t taken you up on.
01:04:40:01 –> 01:04:41:00
I’ll give you the front shoulder.
01:04:42:00 –> 01:04:42:26
Front shoulders.
01:04:43:18 –> 01:04:44:18
I want Deloitte. I
01:04:44:18 –> 01:04:45:19
Try pin both sides
01:04:46:25 –> 01:04:48:20
With the 300 mag from both sides.
01:04:49:09 –> 01:04:49:18
Waka
01:04:50:28 –> 01:05:06:11
Or a bow. I’ll shoot it with a bow. But yeah, in all seriousness, it’d be a fun game. I got one that has very low risk for me. Oh, a sheep and a rocky. I’ll give you Utah. Come on. I’ve give you my Utah, rocky. Oh, you might plug and play with how many points you got? 17, 18. I’ve got 17 now.
01:05:07:04 –> 01:05:08:15
Come on. Well
01:05:08:15 –> 01:05:14:26
That, that’s not very safe. ’cause you’re right, we’d we’d go with you on that. Whether you messed up and drew something
01:05:15:02 –> 01:05:16:07
Archery on the Nuys.
01:05:18:25 –> 01:05:19:26
Okay. It’s
01:05:19:26 –> 01:05:20:08
On the table.
01:05:20:15 –> 01:05:26:07
It’s on the table. He said it on the air. He said it. Archery new fees. Okay, let’s hold a residence only. But having said that,
01:05:26:14 –> 01:05:27:02
He’s a resident.
01:05:27:14 –> 01:05:32:10
Let’s do it. Let’s do it. Chris. I’d love to see him smoke a freaking Cali. I need to get
01:05:32:21 –> 01:05:33:04
The new fees
01:05:33:07 –> 01:05:33:16
I need to
01:05:33:20 –> 01:05:35:22
In, in the end of December. So we gotta piece, I
01:05:35:25 –> 01:05:36:11
Need to get a new
01:05:36:24 –> 01:05:39:01
Bow’s. Look at those season dates real quick before
01:05:39:01 –> 01:05:39:06
We
01:05:39:18 –> 01:05:40:17
Plug and play that one.
01:05:41:27 –> 01:05:44:25
No vacations for us. No cruises that type
01:05:44:25 –> 01:05:53:17
Of year. No. Well, we’re done doing that. But anyway. Yeah, Chris, think that one over. John. I don’t have to think that over. We’re trying to get cash. John’s deer or elk points in Utah. But yeah,
01:05:53:24 –> 01:05:57:11
I offered up my elk points in Colorado. Yeah, that’s, but nobody wants ’em.
01:05:57:14 –> 01:06:08:05
I don’t know. I, I was hoping for some really good things and everybody’s like throwing, you know, Hey, I have my Barbie application in New Mexico. I mean wow. Wow. That’s something. Really
01:06:08:05 –> 01:06:09:20
Good luck with that. I mean, my desert, she You’re
01:06:09:20 –> 01:06:13:06
Not even burning a point. Yeah. Your desert sheep in Utah. Wow. John,
01:06:13:15 –> 01:06:29:26
We’re gonna here. What think’s funny? This is, this is a prime example of what everybody in the whole world is thinking. It’s hard for people to throw anything out. Chris, you could draw something, John, you could draw out, draw elk, throw it out, let’s go do it. But, but you’re disgusted right now. You’re sick to your stomach thinking
01:06:30:14 –> 01:06:31:12
Points will be
01:06:31:12 –> 01:06:35:23
Gone. Have been never been worse than Utah. Yeah. That’s, that’s most of it. I’ll never have this many points again in the next,
01:06:35:29 –> 01:06:50:28
In the last 15 years we’re talking. Yeah. They’ve, they’ve gone from mid two thousands. Incredible to two, 2020. Just what they are. Less than what you’ve lived through. Yeah. So it’s hard to say I want this because it’s not as good as what it was. Well,
01:06:50:28 –> 01:07:05:07
And I’m thinking I could probably hunt elk in Colorado, hunt elk in maybe New Mexico if I get lucky. You know, in, in maybe not as good area, but go, go hunting elk and just hold off on Utah. Hopefully cross my fingers. It’ll get better. Better. I’ll,
01:07:05:07 –> 01:07:12:13
I’ll take the bait. I’ll take the bait. How many points you got for Colorado Wealth do you think? Without me going Tod. Computer up.
01:07:12:15 –> 01:07:14:26
Look, I think I’ve got 10 or double digit 11. All
01:07:14:26 –> 01:07:15:29
Right. That, that gives you nothing. So
01:07:16:05 –> 01:07:17:17
Just give us double digit.
01:07:18:01 –> 01:07:20:26
That’s a good cow tag. Give. That’s a good cow tag in some place. Social
01:07:21:00 –> 01:07:22:06
Security number, date of birth. 1112.
01:07:22:09 –> 01:07:25:04
And that’s no-brainer. That’s a tough place. What’s a no-brainer, Jason? 44th.
01:07:25:27 –> 01:07:27:10
No-brainer. That’s
01:07:27:13 –> 01:07:34:06
What I did last year. Okay. We’ve been there, done that. It’s tougher. I’ve heard, but it’s also had Oh yeah, mild weather. You
01:07:34:06 –> 01:07:35:14
Killed it, huh? 360.
01:07:35:18 –> 01:07:39:24
That was 2016. I say tougher. That’s four years ago. Yeah.
01:07:40:05 –> 01:07:42:00
Have you heard it since? No. How do you know?
01:07:42:19 –> 01:07:47:29
I’ve talked to a lot of people that I sent to the exact places and they, it’s just
01:07:47:29 –> 01:07:48:13
A year to year
01:07:48:13 –> 01:07:51:02
Deal. They never want to talk to me. It’s true though. They never wanna talk to me again.
01:07:51:11 –> 01:07:52:01
I’ve lost friends,
01:07:52:07 –> 01:07:53:06
I’ve lost clients,
01:07:53:15 –> 01:07:55:20
Friends. That’s a whole nother story.
01:07:55:25 –> 01:07:58:01
Have we told that on a podcast, Chris? Yeah. Okay. Sorry.
01:07:58:26 –> 01:07:59:14
Canadian, Canada.
01:08:00:04 –> 01:08:03:01
So we’ve got Chris that can’t go back to Canada. John, John,
01:08:03:06 –> 01:08:05:07
John, those or may not be, doesn’t wanna go to Mexico,
01:08:05:26 –> 01:08:15:28
Allowed back in Mexico. We don’t know. We’ve still, we’re buying the story of a cattle guard just, just because we trust John. We’ve never, never given us us a reason John to not trust him. Oh, he
01:08:16:15 –> 01:08:16:24
Sees.
01:08:17:09 –> 01:08:17:16
But
01:08:19:01 –> 01:08:21:07
I don’t know. I’m not, I’m not buying at
01:08:21:07 –> 01:08:28:08
All. I’m taking him for face value. But sounds like a good story. I don’t know how you could think of that story if it didn’t happen. It’s one of those that’s too,
01:08:28:08 –> 01:08:29:11
There’s more to it I think. True.
01:08:29:19 –> 01:08:31:10
To not be true. There’s more to
01:08:31:10 –> 01:08:36:11
It. He went across that cattle guard at some point in daylight hours. I guess it goes back to he
01:08:36:11 –> 01:08:37:02
Saw the sign
01:08:37:06 –> 01:08:44:18
Hours, he saw the sign in the lantern light going 15 or 20. And he, and he was, and he was trying to learn Spanish on Yes.
01:08:44:24 –> 01:08:53:04
He’s remembering, he’s remembering the Rosetta Stone words in his head. Yeah. Gro, what does it? Chris Gro pe Gro. He’s like, oh, what does that mean? Some
01:08:53:04 –> 01:08:55:20
Hooked on phonics came into mind. What’s that? What’s that?
01:08:56:02 –> 01:09:03:23
What’s that? Ah, whatever the swear words are in Spanish, then it’s over. What are shizz?
01:09:06:11 –> 01:09:07:11
I now have a yard cell.
01:09:09:17 –> 01:09:16:13
Right John, you’re lucky you got your teeth. Seriously. I am lucky at the front pipe. The molding on the case. You’re would’ve all
01:09:16:15 –> 01:09:16:29
Easy. It
01:09:16:29 –> 01:09:20:02
Was gone. Yeah, you, you basically were a pendulum. Ba
01:09:20:19 –> 01:09:28:19
I’m lucky I didn’t break my cheekbone open and it broke my case instead in lots to be thankful for Anyway. Lots to be thankful for. Yeah. Anyway. Well
01:09:28:21 –> 01:09:39:18
We’ve been all over the map today. From Mexico, Canada, from Mexico, Dakota, Canada, Rodio Grill to our local Mexican joint and four states I think touching on ’em.
01:09:40:09 –> 01:09:41:10
Yeah, we’re talking about,
01:09:42:15 –> 01:09:43:22
It’s coming out as fast right now.
01:09:43:22 –> 01:09:51:10
Eating orx, eating Mustang pellet grills. I don’t know what else. And apply, apply, apply.
01:09:51:26 –> 01:09:55:24
That’s right. A lot going on. But let’s do a shout out. Speaking of rifles.
01:09:56:08 –> 01:10:07:07
Oh, the M o A rifles. Yeah. Good dudes. Bob Beck up there. M o a rifles Awesome gun. In fact, Bronson smoked, smoked a lot of sheep clients. A lot of sheep with the m a rifle.
01:10:08:03 –> 01:10:09:12
That’s right. What do they call it?
01:10:09:22 –> 01:10:10:24
Sheila? Little
01:10:10:24 –> 01:10:15:12
Sheila. That’s what I called her. Yep. Just for my old Australian. She barks. I spent a couple years in Austria.
01:10:15:13 –> 01:10:17:10
She barks and everybody listens. Well
01:10:17:19 –> 01:10:45:14
It’s not really, you guys are making this into some fantasy romantic story. No, it’s just not. Anyway, if you’ve been to Australia, the word Sheila and bloke are kind of used interchangeably for like a woman and a guy. So that’s, that was how you know, I don’t know how. And sometimes you name a good truck, a feminine name, you know, a good gun, a feminine name. Sometimes you use some masculine names. Yeah. This was just one
01:10:45:14 –> 01:10:47:28
Time you never named a truck Gus. You know what I mean? Like ah,
01:10:48:03 –> 01:10:53:05
It’s all Betsy. Right, right. Or I don’t know, just another. All right, keep going anyway.
01:10:56:04 –> 01:10:58:05
M moa rifles.com. Huh? What?
01:10:58:09 –> 01:11:01:23
Call up and order your Sheila John.
01:11:01:25 –> 01:11:03:26
Tell Bob say I want one. Just like Sheila,
01:11:04:11 –> 01:11:49:26
Huh? Yeah. Give him a call. M o a rifle. They’re great little shooting guns. They are. We went up to their shooting course last summer. It was awesome. Six five p r c light. Awesome. Shoots a thousand yards with a thousand foot pounds of energy. Still Call ’em at (541) 526-1820. Or m o a rifles with an s.com. Check them out. And they will be at the Western Hunting Conservation Expo. I believe. They’re almost, they’re always there every year. So anyway, super good guy. Discount code. I love Sheila paying for that. John, who’s we’re writing checks or we can’t cash, just ask Bob Mouse writing checks. We can’t cash.
01:11:49:28 –> 01:11:55:23
Bob will treat you right? He does. He will do a combo shooting course gun rifle and he’ll treat you. Right. So
01:11:55:28 –> 01:12:06:11
I got the Ascent rifle, which is under six pounds. Great little shooting gun. It’s awesome. So anyway, love it. In my repertoire. Is that French John? Yeah. Ah, I thought it was. It is
01:12:06:12 –> 01:12:07:13
Nice. Yes. What does it mean
01:12:08:24 –> 01:12:11:10
Arsenal? Arsenal? French, I don’t know.
01:12:11:14 –> 01:12:12:04
French is not
01:12:12:04 –> 01:12:18:20
Collection Arsenal. Something like that. Yep. Well guys, all right, we’ll see you next week. Western Hunting Conservation Expo. Be there.
