You are listening to the Epic Outdoors Podcast, brought to you by Fierce Firearms, epic Outdoors choice for custom hunting rifles.
00:00:19:11 –> 00:00:33:04
Hey everybody. Jason Carter. Adam Bronson, the entire epic outdoors crew. With the exception of John. He didn’t feel invited at the table. ’cause this table needs to be bigger. We need to put leaves. We need to cut it and put leaves in this. Oh, Messerly, you can do this. We don’t
00:00:33:04 –> 00:00:33:08
Have
00:00:33:08 –> 00:00:36:15
That. We need a bigger table, don’t you think? I
00:00:36:15 –> 00:00:36:23
Don’t know.
00:00:37:03 –> 00:00:46:15
We’re about there, but anyway, here we are. What day is today? It’s Wednesday. It’s a Wednesday, right, Logan? It is. All right.
00:00:46:29 –> 00:00:57:14
Magazine’s at the printer. So we all, we all little, I don’t know what’s the word? Why around here this week. This is a good week. How would you characterize this week? The week after expos over magazines.
00:00:57:18 –> 00:01:00:23
There’s nothing do about why we’re all having a good week. Are you having a good week?
00:01:01:10 –> 00:01:04:22
I, I got deadlines coming up still too. What? We got New Mexico.
00:01:05:00 –> 00:01:06:18
Okay. That’s not till March. And it’s
00:01:06:18 –> 00:01:07:29
Still February, March 19th no less. Yes.
00:01:07:29 –> 00:01:10:10
March 19th is, I know, correct. So what else?
00:01:10:10 –> 00:01:10:23
Today’s,
00:01:10:23 –> 00:01:11:09
This is a good
00:01:11:09 –> 00:01:17:02
Week. You’ve been doing stuff you don’t want to talk about though. Like clauses and paws and apps. For apps for weird
00:01:17:02 –> 00:01:19:05
Stuff. Yeah. We don’t want to talk about that. I mean it’s,
00:01:19:07 –> 00:01:21:03
Yeah, we got guide Draw and the Nevada got
00:01:21:03 –> 00:01:22:24
Bear coming up. We’ve been working up
00:01:23:23 –> 00:01:26:10
Bear results in Utah. Come back this week sometime.
00:01:26:24 –> 00:01:50:20
Be exciting. You excited? Yes. We’re excited. Anyway, as we get started, we want to thank Fierce for sponsoring this podcast and all podcasts that we’re doing. Fierce Firearms. We sell ’em. Of course you can go to their website, check ’em out. They got a lot of new products and again, appreciate them and their support and the awesome products they build. We’re shooting stuff near, dang near every day with some of their rifles. Right. Devin? Pretty much every
00:01:50:23 –> 00:01:51:26
Day. I
00:01:51:26 –> 00:01:53:11
Haven’t killed anything for quite some
00:01:53:11 –> 00:01:55:10
Time. You haven’t? No. You need to get out.
00:01:56:09 –> 00:01:58:17
I do. I need to get out. But you have a short
00:01:59:00 –> 00:02:00:02
W Wyatt, have you killed anything
00:02:00:09 –> 00:02:01:02
Recently? Have not
00:02:01:21 –> 00:02:03:27
Tried. Tried maybe.
00:02:04:05 –> 00:02:04:26
No, no. Just
00:02:05:06 –> 00:02:08:14
You had a coyote getaway. Broad daylight. Freaking out in the brush.
00:02:09:01 –> 00:02:11:00
Those don’t count when you’re just, you’re just
00:02:11:00 –> 00:02:12:29
Shit run. They make you bad. Hell
00:02:12:29 –> 00:02:15:09
They do. I hit a rabbit on the way to work this morning. You did
00:02:15:09 –> 00:02:17:29
That count? Did, yeah. Did it wipe out your car? No. Take out the corner
00:02:17:29 –> 00:02:19:14
Panel. No. I, I swerved just enough.
00:02:20:11 –> 00:02:20:21
Did you
00:02:20:24 –> 00:02:21:21
Got it with the back tire?
00:02:23:00 –> 00:02:29:26
Well, I know a guy with cars and parts and engines, John, so if you need anything, he’s got it. Well
00:02:29:26 –> 00:02:34:23
He is already, he’s already put his spin on that car. Remember when he backed into the door?
00:02:35:00 –> 00:02:38:24
Oh yeah. What did you do? Did you end up getting that fixed? Yeah.
00:02:38:24 –> 00:02:39:11
Yeah. What you
00:02:39:11 –> 00:02:40:18
Mean? Yeah, plus or minus Clean his
00:02:40:18 –> 00:02:41:04
Whistle. Watch. Yeah.
00:02:41:04 –> 00:02:42:06
Had a whole new door put on it.
00:02:45:20 –> 00:02:59:14
I can’t whistle. I can either do it loud or nothing at all. Alright, so Bronson, we’re gonna get cranking. First off, I guess we’ve gotta do a muzz or giveaway. We promised the people a muzz. We do. And we’ve been getting asked on Instagram about it. When are we gonna do it? We’re gonna, okay, we’re gonna do it right
00:02:59:14 –> 00:03:04:28
Now. We’re gonna deliver within the first. That’s right. Two days after we said we’d do it. That’s right. Kinda like Trump. Kinda
00:03:04:28 –> 00:03:07:06
Like Trump. Like within, yeah. Trump. Dude.
00:03:07:08 –> 00:03:14:01
Just, he’s good. All right. He’s doing So follow through. What were the, for everybody that maybe didn’t hear that, what was this giveaway? What’d we, what did we do? A
00:03:14:01 –> 00:03:22:19
Couple podcasts ago, we were giving away a muzzle loader. All you had to do is post on your Instagram with hashtag epic muzzle. And that got you entered. So these are the people that did that.
00:03:22:24 –> 00:03:27:23
What are they gonna win? Devon? Or who? What did we decide? Is it a, an Optima Optima. Me two. Alright.
00:03:27:26 –> 00:03:29:19
Thumb hole. Thumb hole. What else?
00:03:30:10 –> 00:03:32:06
I don’t know. They can do whatever. There’s a lot of the most
00:03:32:06 –> 00:03:34:15
Amazing shooting this muzzle ever. Free
00:03:34:22 –> 00:03:34:24

Be fun. Calls to make next week. So,
00:05:32:12 –> 00:05:37:01
Alright, so Bronson, why don’t you start about, well I mean, let’s
00:05:37:01 –> 00:05:41:19
Talk about the state of the nation in Utah. 60 start off. 60 seconds. Everybody gets 60 seconds for the
00:05:41:19 –> 00:05:45:21
Unguarded version. Well, 60 seconds unguarded. What you’re really thinking, what you’re really
00:05:45:21 –> 00:05:51:23
Gonna do. Let, let’s start with Logan. 60 seconds on Utah. We’re talking, you can’t, don’t deviate. It’s
00:05:51:23 –> 00:05:53:19
Just Utah. I’m happy as a clam. I
00:05:53:19 –> 00:05:53:24
Love
00:05:53:24 –> 00:05:58:04
Really, I like, you know, three, 4-year-old bucks. I think those are real monsters. And
00:05:58:14 –> 00:06:03:19
This is the problem with the state. Do we get, be unguarded right now? No. Yes, absolutely.
00:06:04:01 –> 00:06:07:28
You can counter anything anybody else says. But let’s let him have a 60 seconds go.
00:06:08:02 –> 00:06:10:04
No, of course. I don’t think that that was sarcastic.
00:06:10:07 –> 00:06:12:12
I don’t know. He’s already started it off then. Can wrong foot
00:06:12:19 –> 00:06:13:29
On the wrong foot? No, I’m
00:06:13:29 –> 00:06:14:03
Just
00:06:14:03 –> 00:06:15:27
Teasing. I think that’s the right foot. I know it’s
00:06:15:29 –> 00:06:16:22
Your 60 seconds.
00:06:17:03 –> 00:06:41:28
My, my home unit got got a little bit torn apart this year. I wasn’t very happy with it at first. I’m trying to be optimistic. I like it. I don’t really enjoy super restrictive weapon types, but I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel with it. My only worry is that oftentimes restricted weapons lead to lower success rates. Which is fine. Which leads to largely increased tag numbers, which is not fine.
00:06:43:01 –> 00:06:48:10
So it would be fine if we left tag numbers the same, restricted the weapons and said I think all right, now let’s,
00:06:49:00 –> 00:07:02:05
I think’s carry if you over, I think any general unit has a a lot to grow with. If they didn’t increase tagging and tag numbers and they restricted the weapons, I think it could be good. But I just, I can see what’s coming down the line.
00:07:03:24 –> 00:07:06:03
I think we’re all feel for fearful of that.
00:07:07:03 –> 00:07:12:17
Yeah. Do you want me to be the devil’s? No, just the devil’s advocate. Is
00:07:12:17 –> 00:07:14:04
This part of your 62nd? This is your 62nd.
00:07:14:08 –> 00:07:32:05
No, no, no, but I’m just saying if I’m DWR Bronson, you’re DWR, what’s your reply? Well, we gotta be within management objective and now we are dealing with certain success rates. And if the success isn’t high and we’re not have the take that we want to have, I’ve got 18, then we’ve got no choice. We are handcuffed. We have to increase tags. We’re
00:07:32:05 –> 00:07:35:21
Sitting, we’re sitting at 18 to 19 bucks for a hundred dollars. We’re wasting buck.
00:07:35:24 –> 00:07:36:03
And maybe
00:07:36:13 –> 00:07:38:05
Our objective is 15, Logan,
00:07:38:10 –> 00:07:46:12
Maybe this is something I need to be educated on. But is success rate indicative of tag numbers or is it only buck to dough ratio and age class?
00:07:47:06 –> 00:07:49:07
This is where the science comes in. Because
00:07:49:07 –> 00:07:59:24
If success rate is conglomeration, if success rate helps with tag numbers, then that changes my opinion a little. ’cause now I understand a little, but if it’s just numbers, then I don’t think,
00:08:00:29 –> 00:08:01:23
I don’t think its worth
00:08:02:24 –> 00:08:13:09
It only, it only counts at the rack level board level. That does, that’s what they could do what they want with the success rates. The division doesn’t take that into effect at all. ’cause it doesn’t,
00:08:13:21 –> 00:08:35:09
It’s, that’s it’s buck to do ratio. Yeah. Yeah. That’s what they look at. So if, if you’re, to answer your question, if by going to the restricted weapons on, you know, cash, boulder, beaver West, wherever else that happened on those three, they limit harvest dramatically. The buck to dough ratio comes up, you’re gonna see more tags. Right. Plain
00:08:35:09 –> 00:08:39:12
And simple. So indirectly it affects the buck to DW ratio, which would affect tag numbers. Yeah.
00:08:39:12 –> 00:08:45:18
Yeah. But does a 20% less access rate really have that big of an effect on a buck to do ratio of a whole unit?
00:08:45:27 –> 00:09:28:23
It might, yeah. 20%. I mean you’re talking 20% less. Let’s say most, most generals run between what, 30 to 40% Pollock? I guess that depends on the weapon type. Yeah. But when we look at those for archery, muzzle and rifle, I’d say it’s 25 to 40%. 50 is exceptionally high. Yeah. But so yeah, you take, you know, 40% and you take, you know, you’re talking most cases hundreds and thousands, not hundreds of thousands, but thousands of deer on the unit. Right. So, you know, saving 20% of the quote, saving 27, 20% of the bucks that would’ve got shot. Yeah. It can make a pretty big increase on bucket door ratio on a, on a unit with, you know, three 5,000 deer plus
00:09:29:20 –> 00:09:42:12
Because I’m all for doing whatever it takes to let a few mature deer and future mature deer walk. But I just don’t wanna see a thousand hunters out there slinging bullets every day and making it worse after five years.
00:09:44:07 –> 00:09:44:29
Okay, well
00:09:46:02 –> 00:09:47:05
That’s my 60 seconds.
00:09:47:05 –> 00:09:53:15
We’ve gotta go around the table. So yeah. Who’s next? I mean, Devin, you’ve been kind of quiet over there. Time
00:09:53:15 –> 00:10:01:18
To, I’m gonna stay positive. Really? I get to apply for moose here in a few weeks. For what? Yeah,
00:10:02:01 –> 00:10:04:00
What? Rewind.
00:10:04:00 –> 00:10:04:17
It’s great thing
00:10:04:21 –> 00:10:05:22
We’re in Utah. I
00:10:05:22 –> 00:10:06:09
Know. That’s
00:10:06:09 –> 00:10:07:00
What he is got points for.
00:10:07:06 –> 00:10:17:04
And you’ve got points for moose. Yeah. And you’re excited about that. Yep. Do you have enough to draw anything? Nope. Okay. What’s your odds if you can’t
00:10:17:04 –> 00:10:17:19
Win it, if you’re not
00:10:18:10 –> 00:10:20:15
Got doors.com at your point level, what’s your odds?
00:10:21:07 –> 00:10:24:12
I don’t. I’m gonna apply once again, apply,
00:10:24:12 –> 00:10:24:29
Apply, apply.
00:10:25:06 –> 00:10:26:11
You can’t win if you’re not,
00:10:26:21 –> 00:10:29:12
I wanna hunt deer that are over the age of three. That would be nice.
00:10:30:18 –> 00:10:31:25
Okay. What’s mature to you?
00:10:34:08 –> 00:10:35:11
Five plus. Yeah,
00:10:35:18 –> 00:10:42:00
Five and a half plus. Alright, so expound upon that. What I mean, what’s your other plans for you tells the state of the nations,
00:10:42:10 –> 00:10:48:18
If there’s 20 bucks per 100 does 16 of those are two points in spikes? Yeah,
00:10:49:13 –> 00:10:50:21
They all aren’t good on the other four.
00:10:50:21 –> 00:11:00:27
Maybe one or two. Every maybe one or two out of every two to three. 400 or what? Four plus. So that’s what we’re dealing with. That’s the ones we’re looking for. So
00:11:02:02 –> 00:11:05:05
Start looking, start looking. You should have, did you look this morning?
00:11:05:14 –> 00:11:05:23
Nope.
00:11:07:08 –> 00:11:08:12
They’re shedding. It’s hard.
00:11:08:15 –> 00:11:16:25
Deer. Deer also need water and feed and shelter. And if you like the desert, it’s gonna be a fun one. Yeah.
00:11:17:08 –> 00:11:18:09
So what do you mean fun,
00:11:18:11 –> 00:11:22:15
Deon? It’s pretty dry out there. Yeah, I worry about that. Yeah, it’s gonna
00:11:22:15 –> 00:11:23:25
Be tough. Adam, what are in
00:11:23:25 –> 00:11:24:15
The southern part of
00:11:24:15 –> 00:11:30:15
The state? Speaking of dry, what were your percentages? You were rattling off yesterday, wasn’t it? 5%? It’s somewhere. It
00:11:30:15 –> 00:12:25:07
Was 5%. Oh, Henry’s. If you call Bryce Canyon snow till I think that’s what, or that’d be gon 12%. Henry’s was five. What was this other grass something down this corner Had a zero class Zero. Yeah, that’s, was that on the west west slope of Pine Valley? Most everything’s 2030. There’s a couple forties, but they were more like probably Beaver or even LaSalle was a little better. That corner did get a good storm a couple weeks ago. But literally one storm brought it up from 20% to 40. But it’s incredibly dry. The other stuff you guys were saying wasn’t the snow tail sites or some of the driest in 4,040 something years. I mean you can’t, you can’t spin it any other way. But yet tags are mulder tags across Utah that are selling like, like it’s gonna be a banner year. What? That’s true. I mean it wasn’t a deal at the expo. There was no foot off the gas pedal on Mulder tags as far as,
00:12:25:07 –> 00:12:26:19
This is crazy. Oh man.
00:12:26:26 –> 00:12:28:18
Few of the bigger tags. Broke records.
00:12:29:01 –> 00:12:34:21
Yeah. 370 for Utah, two 50 wasn’t it for Nevada? I mean the driver Nevada
00:12:34:21 –> 00:12:35:17
Was three even three
00:12:35:17 –> 00:12:35:23
Even.
00:12:36:01 –> 00:12:50:18
Was it three even? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, anyway, kind of kind of wild quite frankly, but, but I mean maybe Northern Nevada’s, you know, not necessarily drought stricken like, like maybe southern Nevada, but southern Nevada’s where the big deer have been traditionally
00:12:50:18 –> 00:12:54:09
Coming from. Same thing with northern Utah. Maybe somebody knows something on it to get on Northern Utah. Buck. Yeah,
00:12:54:28 –> 00:12:56:28
Go north. That’d be my recommendation. Go north.
00:12:57:01 –> 00:13:03:04
Yeah, go to Canada. That’s what you’re doing. Go to Canada. Right. The 51st state,
00:13:03:15 –> 00:13:04:06
Northern Utah. We’re going to
00:13:04:06 –> 00:13:05:01
The 51st state
00:13:05:11 –> 00:13:05:22
Apply
00:13:05:22 –> 00:13:08:12
To northern Utah. Go hunt up there for a change.
00:13:08:21 –> 00:13:23:05
Pretty wild. So anyway. Yeah. And weren’t they, who was it? Was it you Pollock or Adam? Talking about like the dough weights, mature deer weights or some of the worst they’ve seen on the Pine Valley. Pine Valley.
00:13:23:09 –> 00:13:23:22
I’ve heard that
00:13:23:24 –> 00:13:24:21
On the Pine Valley that they
00:13:24:21 –> 00:13:39:12
Were, yeah, as bad as they’ve ever seen. So just, I mean love those deer down there. They don’t obviously have to walk through snow or compete with snow and that kind of thing, but there’s actually feed that’ll grow in some of that stuff. You know, some of that country down there will actually no winter. It does green up despite what you guys may think. Talking
00:13:39:12 –> 00:13:41:09
About ma, taco and Utah. It
00:13:41:09 –> 00:13:42:03
Does, it does green up
00:13:43:04 –> 00:13:44:06
In February on occasion
00:13:44:10 –> 00:13:57:10
Could maintain green some greenness. And those deer, I think rely on that to, because there’s really nothing else out there. So they’re probably the drought’s, not just winter or, excuse me, summer and an growth and body condition, that kind of stuff. It’s even,
00:13:57:14 –> 00:13:59:15
It’s even cheap in the winter. Yeah. Just
00:13:59:15 –> 00:14:01:13
Stuff. Something for them to eat out there.
00:14:02:20 –> 00:14:02:29
Jeez.
00:14:03:16 –> 00:14:05:22
And there’s nothing, sounds like,
00:14:05:25 –> 00:14:11:24
Keep taking the mic, you’ve got about 20 seconds in, but give us another 40 seconds into your mind of the state of Utah, Josh.
00:14:12:09 –> 00:14:47:11
I don’t know. It’s gonna be, it’s gonna be interesting this year just to see, because if we don’t get any spring spring moisture at all, it’s gonna be really bad. The only thing could be is if you could say in some areas, maybe our deer mountain type deer, whatever, where our deer are wintering in mountain areas. They haven’t been trudging through snow and stuff, so they’re obviously losing fat every day in the winter. But maybe they haven’t been losing it as much as they did or have it in the past. So there is still some potential for things to be okay. But if we don’t get any moisture and stuff doesn’t green up very much, it’s not gonna be that great for antler growth or body conditions or stuff like that.
00:14:47:13 –> 00:14:51:22
So what about elk? What’s your thoughts on elk in southern Utah? There’s
00:14:51:22 –> 00:15:25:04
Like this, I think, I think elk could still be good. You know, there’s still some snow on the mountain and that’ll melt off and green up. And so elk antler growth, I could see it if there’s good feet on the mountain, a few of these units that have had some burns pen, which fever some of these that, you know, maybe some that don’t have that kind of component to ’em, but like a pengu, a beaver, something that’s got some fresh feed that’ll, that’ll green up and do good. They could still see good aler growth, but at the same time, my know, drought years, oftentimes they’re kind of brittle too and they break up. So that’s all I, that’s all I got. All
00:15:25:04 –> 00:15:25:09
That.
00:15:25:18 –> 00:15:26:03
That’s all.
00:15:26:10 –> 00:15:30:25
I don’t think it’s true. I think you got more. What? What’s your, what’s your real pollock plan, Jason?
00:15:31:02 –> 00:15:33:16
He had 60 seconds. Do we all get a minute 20?
00:15:33:24 –> 00:15:36:16
Yes, we do. If you want it, I want you to have it.
00:15:37:18 –> 00:15:42:00
I, I’ve got nothing. Like I’m not really excited about anything. Yeah,
00:15:42:10 –> 00:15:45:07
You are too. We’re all excited every morning. We’re excited. Oh
00:15:45:07 –> 00:15:58:13
Yeah, we are excited. I just mean there’s nothing that’s Yeah. Crazy. Yeah. Exciting. I mean, yeah, hopefully we can get some tags and go hunt. I still wanna do that, but yeah, I don’t know.
00:15:59:20 –> 00:16:03:17
All right. Okay. I like it. What, what do you got? Well,
00:16:03:17 –> 00:16:05:16
You guys kind of stole my talking point right there.
00:16:05:24 –> 00:16:07:00
Oh. Which the last four
00:16:07:00 –> 00:16:18:04
Guys, I was kind of excited that I am a guy that gets to go in for elk for this year for the, I guess second time in my life. But first time I’ve kind of been excited about it just because of the state of the mule deer situation here. Here. So
00:16:18:04 –> 00:16:21:03
You’re glad you don’t have your 21 or two deer points this year, you’d,
00:16:21:10 –> 00:16:24:28
I’m glad I cashed those in. So, I mean, it looks, looks better and better all the time.
00:16:27:03 –> 00:16:35:10
So having said that, what, what’s your mind contemplating at night when you put your head on the pillow? As far as an elk applicated, the late, we know how much you’ve,
00:16:35:16 –> 00:16:47:07
I’m just glad that Elker seem to be doing good in Utah. They seem to do good on drought years. I mean, later in the hunts they might break up as Pollock mentioned there, but, but I think it’ll be overall a, you know, pretty good year for elk here in Utah.
00:16:47:17 –> 00:16:53:27
Does that worry you as somebody that’s eyeing the late December archery elk that they might be broken up by that time of year? Yeah.
00:16:54:04 –> 00:17:00:12
Elk hunting in December. I think I’ll just ride out my five years here. Applying for elk can go right back in for deer. If, if things change around,
00:17:00:18 –> 00:17:03:21
Hey listen, if you’re not excited, you could put in for antelope this year.
00:17:04:03 –> 00:17:06:18
May. Yeah, I guess pro how did pronghorn do on drought years?
00:17:07:03 –> 00:17:07:18
We have choices.
00:17:07:22 –> 00:17:08:03
Jason,
00:17:08:11 –> 00:17:08:22
I’ll be
00:17:08:22 –> 00:17:10:15
Your spotter. They seem to be fine. They
00:17:10:27 –> 00:17:13:10
Maybe, what do we say? Stags and game throw ho game
00:17:13:10 –> 00:17:15:06
Throw away for ponant. Archery, pronghorn,
00:17:15:06 –> 00:17:20:21
Droughts. You hunt moose. Like Devon said, you hunt antelope here and there. Some of the animals do better.
00:17:21:07 –> 00:17:27:07
I feel like we’re being so negative. Maybe we’ll get some good spring rain and everything will be okay and we’ll have giant mule deer for all.
00:17:27:16 –> 00:17:37:15
That’s what happens. I don’t know about you guys, but I feel like Wyatt stripped his velvet last night. Comes back in with a fresh face. Like he stripped his, he shaved his beer
00:17:37:15 –> 00:17:38:17
For all you that can’t see
00:17:38:17 –> 00:17:45:22
It looks totally different. Baby face. Yeah. Yeah. Lost a little mask. But still I like it still. You know, I can recognize him. That’s Wyatt. But yeah, I
00:17:45:22 –> 00:17:49:00
Don’t know. That’s Wyatt. And I’m ready, but I’m ready to spar now. It doesn’t look so scary.
00:17:49:11 –> 00:17:56:28
Yeah, exactly. I just haven’t recognized him yet. You know, when you see a buck for the first time out of velvet, they
00:17:56:28 –> 00:18:02:16
Just look a different, be like Josh shaving his mustache, he’d lose your identity. It’s true. Are you gonna shave your mustache
00:18:02:16 –> 00:18:05:22
Someday? I don’t know. We’ll probably just grow it back into a beard at some point and
00:18:06:13 –> 00:18:08:06
I don’t know. Yeah, I think
00:18:08:06 –> 00:18:10:10
You should do like long, like six inch chops.
00:18:10:17 –> 00:18:11:05
Like just
00:18:11:05 –> 00:18:11:19
Let it go.
00:18:12:14 –> 00:18:15:01
There’s a line there. Your brother, you’re starting to look white trash
00:18:15:07 –> 00:18:17:15
Your, your brothers go up, get yours that go down
00:18:18:09 –> 00:18:18:24
Foodman
00:18:18:24 –> 00:18:19:29
Chew style droppers.
00:18:19:29 –> 00:18:20:28
Yeah. Yeah,
00:18:21:17 –> 00:18:31:05
Those wax. Well, okay, so Wyatt’s kind of thinking elk might be surprisingly good. Is that generally? Yeah, I think
00:18:31:05 –> 00:18:38:13
It’ll be a fair year. I think we have good numbers of elk. Good h glass of bulls. I mean, we had phenomenal years on some of the units here in Utah last year. Yeah. Yeah. I mean,
00:18:38:19 –> 00:18:40:01
Feel like we have a lot of
00:18:40:05 –> 00:18:40:16
Leftover too.
00:18:41:10 –> 00:19:12:21
And some years if there’s enough feed, like we’ve been talking about just sitting on the mountain all winter that they’re, you know, not stressed at all. And they do eke out any kind of green, you know, on some of our mountain units that go from 10 to 13,000 feet, there’s gonna be gradual green up there, there that there isn’t in some of these high desert units, you know, like Northern Arizona or maybe even out west to here. So it’s gonna be interesting to see, I don’t, I don’t know many of us that are in the Elk game other than you Wyatt.
00:19:13:18 –> 00:19:14:12
Yeah, there’s
00:19:14:18 –> 00:19:22:04
Some of those. Before you do C Do you do deer? I, I’m in deer. Yeah. Logan. Limited to deer. Deer. Yeah. So you’re our, you’re our only OB one.
00:19:22:25 –> 00:19:29:15
Somebody’s gotta do residency in Arizona. So you’re non-resident. You get to do points and apply everything in Utah. You know what I mean? We gotta
00:19:29:15 –> 00:19:31:07
Figure that out. You daring somebody to do that. Yeah.
00:19:31:17 –> 00:19:32:12
I would love it for you guys
00:19:32:14 –> 00:19:32:25
To do that.
00:19:32:25 –> 00:19:34:19
Well you just announced that on a live podcast.
00:19:34:26 –> 00:19:40:24
Well, I mean, I would get to poaching reward permits and stuff. Oh wow. Who’s first?
00:19:41:04 –> 00:19:41:11
Wow.
00:19:41:22 –> 00:19:44:12
How does that feel that your coworker’s trying to entrap who’s, who’s
00:19:44:12 –> 00:19:49:15
First? Okay, here’s, here’s a, here’s a wood you’d rather than you gonna live in Littlefield or Fredonia?
00:19:51:00 –> 00:19:51:17
Fredonia.
00:19:52:08 –> 00:19:52:21
Really?
00:19:52:28 –> 00:19:53:05
Yes.
00:19:53:08 –> 00:19:55:15
Little field’s closer to golf courses now. No, I
00:19:55:15 –> 00:20:03:24
Think I’d have to go Fredonia too. Fred’s closer to Big Deer where you could at least do something. When I get home from work, from
00:20:03:24 –> 00:20:14:05
Driving. When I en visit from Fredonia, I just imagined driving that road and there’s just bars on both sides. Bars, bars and liquor stores. And then you hook a right and you’re in the little town and then it’s gone. The
00:20:14:05 –> 00:20:18:10
World’s longest bar right there, I believe still right at the buckskin. Is
00:20:18:10 –> 00:20:18:21
It the longest?
00:20:19:11 –> 00:20:20:06
Never been there. It’s
00:20:20:06 –> 00:20:22:16
The longest, longest bar in the world. It is. It says something on the bill.
00:20:22:21 –> 00:20:22:28
How,
00:20:22:28 –> 00:20:23:05
How
00:20:23:19 –> 00:20:25:16
So on the bill bar longest billboard or something.
00:20:25:21 –> 00:20:29:22
What does longest bar mean? I love Oh wow. Inside the actual bar Inside.
00:20:29:22 –> 00:20:29:29
Yeah.
00:20:30:01 –> 00:20:31:21
It’s in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Wyatt.
00:20:32:07 –> 00:20:34:25
Well maybe it’s been beat, but I swear it said something like that in Northern
00:20:34:25 –> 00:20:36:01
Arizona. How about that? Yeah,
00:20:36:03 –> 00:20:36:23
That’s the one I was thinking
00:20:36:23 –> 00:20:39:19
About. Longest bar in Arizona. There you go. Okay.
00:20:40:16 –> 00:20:40:23
Why?
00:20:41:01 –> 00:20:43:21
Got some statistics that he shouldn’t know. I just
00:20:43:21 –> 00:20:45:10
Look at billboards. They drive by
00:20:45:24 –> 00:20:47:07
You. You could almost fit like,
00:20:47:09 –> 00:20:49:04
Wow, you are not getting so by 60%
00:20:49:06 –> 00:20:49:12
Of
00:20:49:12 –> 00:20:52:11
The population at that bar of Fredonia. That’s
00:20:52:13 –> 00:20:53:03
Probably what it was
00:20:53:06 –> 00:20:57:11
Designed for in Fredonia. Yeah. Wow. That does so well.
00:20:57:15 –> 00:21:00:15
The Buckskin Tavern. Wow. Interesting. I’ve
00:21:00:15 –> 00:21:02:04
Been a favorite since 1934.
00:21:02:19 –> 00:21:09:16
So you’re going to Fredonia and you’re gonna do residency in Arizona. You’re not gonna move for a special purpose. Anything else?
00:21:09:28 –> 00:21:15:12
I never said anything about doing any of that. It was, would you rather choose between these two cities?
00:21:15:26 –> 00:21:19:24
You don’t have a choice. W do you, which place do you wanna live? Which place do you and Carly and Case wanna
00:21:19:24 –> 00:21:21:12
Live? You’re fine where you’re at right now. Yeah,
00:21:21:15 –> 00:21:23:05
I’m, I’m content where I’m at right
00:21:23:05 –> 00:21:26:23
Now. You’re content only having to choose elk or deer. Not doing both.
00:21:27:01 –> 00:21:28:12
I’m kind of like, I’m content
00:21:29:08 –> 00:21:30:27
Not having wildlife violations.
00:21:31:03 –> 00:21:40:09
I was just gonna say, I’m kind of like white, like now I’m coaching you what to say. I like tell everybody you love where you’re at now and you’re never have any intention of leaning content
00:21:40:09 –> 00:21:41:10
Is, is what I’m gonna say.
00:21:42:29 –> 00:21:45:07
Content and no intent to change.
00:21:45:20 –> 00:21:50:05
Alright, so moving along. Let’s see. Wyatt, are we good? Are you, you’re happy with Utah? You’re, yeah,
00:21:50:05 –> 00:21:51:13
I mean the only other thing we could touch on,
00:21:51:20 –> 00:21:53:28
Elker. Good. You’re good Elk. General deer. You’re happy
00:21:53:28 –> 00:21:56:24
With elker? Good. I got general deer points that may stay points
00:21:59:21 –> 00:22:00:17
Planning for a better day.
00:22:00:26 –> 00:22:05:29
Wyatt? Wyatt can draw anything you wants in the general deal day. Dedicated or, or general, right.
00:22:06:05 –> 00:22:12:04
Watch and see what happens maybe. Yeah, we, and new skews too in Utah, I guess is the, the other thing we can touch on.
00:22:12:04 –> 00:22:17:12
We’ll talk about that in a minute. Yeah, we’ll do some wood you rather on the new skews. Okay, there you go. Well, who’s turning
00:22:17:12 –> 00:22:20:16
Is it till April 24th to have some weather set in?
00:22:21:10 –> 00:23:08:23
You guys have stole a lot of my thunder too, but just regarding deer, I I, I am excited. I guess in one sense my boy gets home this summer looking forward to hunting with him again on the mountain. We’ll have dedicated a hundred deer tags and a lot of time, a lot of time to try to find something good. But looking forward to that more than anything that’s, that’s got me more excited than probably I am about maybe what I’m, you know, expecting to find. But that, that doesn’t matter. Yeah, I, I guess in general, we get a lot of quote calls from people about the general, which we tout as, hey, the only hunt you can ever really plan on drawing in Utah in a short interval, short time timeframe. I, I would just say it’s probably not the time for non-resident, I mean, get a lot of calls from non-residents, don’t we?
00:23:08:23 –> 00:24:14:22
Why that say, Hey, I got these points, should I come? And I’m like, well, yeah, you can come anytime you want, but is it, is it kinda upswing or whatnot? And I really can’t say that right now. I hopefully it’s not any worse in a couple years. You know, obviously weather drives that a lot, but also some management that we’re talking about lowering butt to door ratios. I’m a bit disheartened about that and I’m actually to take that to the next level. Nobody’s brought this up. I’m actually maybe equally as bummed about the premium limit entry reduction. Like if, if we’re gonna have the generals become even more vanilla, more general, more, you know, lowered, why do we have to touch the other end? We only have a thousand or 1500 tags in the state for limited entry here. And of those we only got about what, 150 premium limited entry. Why, why do we have to lower buck to door ratio on those to give more tags? Why can’t we have a few units? We are wasting a few bucks. That’s what those units are for. We need something on one end if you’re gonna reduce it on the other end. That’s my, my 2 cents on that. I don’t, and of course, you know,
00:24:15:01 –> 00:24:16:05
Well it’s not fair, Adam,
00:24:17:20 –> 00:24:19:13
You don’t get your chance to hunt well, it’s not fair.
00:24:19:28 –> 00:24:22:16
Everyone doesn’t get Henry’s tags every year. This is not, this is not fair.
00:24:22:19 –> 00:24:24:07
I want my turn too. It’s not fair.
00:24:24:19 –> 00:24:50:16
But, but I mean, yeah, to me the, the amount of tags that they’re gonna be in be able to increase there may seem insignificant on each of the units gon and Henry’s, but they’re already units that right now most, a lot of people, Wyatt are not that, like, not, not everybody kills the buck that they want on those units right now by any stretch, you know, there’s not a lot of 200 steer killed on the ponant last year. I mean, how many caught em on less than
00:24:50:16 –> 00:24:52:13
One and how many were killed by rifle hunters?
00:24:53:06 –> 00:24:58:03
Zero. Yeah, maybe. Maybe one or two. Oh, there’s one private down low but late. But you know, I,
00:24:58:17 –> 00:24:59:16
After the season on the
00:24:59:21 –> 00:25:35:04
Extended and, and the same thing and the same thing on, on the Henrys, so my, not that everybody needs 200 inches, but, but yeah, you start giving 10 extra tags on Juan and maybe 20 or something on the ponds. That doesn’t seem like a lot until the cream now just gets skimmed a little bit more. After five years there’s an extra a hundred bucks gone. And now we’re doing management bucks on both units too. Again, or on, on the Henry’s again. So been doing it on the pond. So I just, just leave some of those alone. Get, you know, don’t take everything from us when it comes to, you know, just making our dear vanilla, our deer vanilla in
00:25:35:06 –> 00:25:45:23
Utah. I feel like Utah does a really good job of wiping out the top end every year. It doesn’t seem like very often does a a wow look at me buck make it to the winter grounds anymore.
00:25:45:29 –> 00:25:48:17
I haven’t seen a while. Look at me buck in how long?
00:25:48:23 –> 00:25:55:07
Well it comes down to that, like I was saying to the sta even on unlimited entry of how many of those deer that make it or, or
00:25:55:07 –> 00:25:55:25
Even capable,
00:25:56:09 –> 00:25:59:10
Look at the SCO big deer, you know, whether
00:25:59:10 –> 00:26:14:07
It’s eight people used to go out on Thanksgiving and go look at big deer, you gonna go out, where are you gonna go when you go out on Thanksgiving to look at a big deer? Like where would you go, Arizona? Oh, I mean maybe the Oak Creek, some of the hay fields, people going out, looking around, whatever. Maybe you see and we’re talking big deer. One
00:26:15:02 –> 00:26:15:11
Was dead
00:26:15:21 –> 00:26:18:11
One Oh, they’re up and comers. They’ll be shooters three year
00:26:18:11 –> 00:26:34:24
Olds. Well, and the way I look at that buck to dough ratio kind of stuff is not every deer is gonna be 200, you know, fact, there’s probably a smaller percentage of ’em that are gonna be 200, but you need more of those bucks to get the possibility of more of those deer getting that big. So yeah, there’s gonna be a bunch of bucks that let us
00:26:34:24 –> 00:26:35:16
Waste a few bucks
00:26:35:22 –> 00:26:50:13
Big, you know, 10-year-old three points and never die. They’ll get, they’ll get killed at some point. And so you’re just reducing the number of bucks that are gonna have even the chance tore their genetic potential. So you’re gonna see less than that. So yeah, some of that stuff is not even like an age type thing in a way because there’s
00:26:50:13 –> 00:26:51:10
A lot of, it’s a numbers game.
00:26:51:13 –> 00:26:55:12
Yes. It’s just numbers. So you need a higher buck door ratio to have more bucks to potentially
00:26:55:12 –> 00:26:57:00
Reach. I think it’s, I think per premium.
00:26:57:09 –> 00:26:57:12
I
00:26:57:12 –> 00:27:15:11
Think that’s important too to bring up that Adam, you’re not bringing this up so you can personally kill another big buck. Like you’re not even in the running to kill another big I’m not buck, I’m even No, like you’re not even gonna draw another tag. No, you’re not even gonna guide another guy on gon like this. The talking about the gon and the quality of bucks does nothing for you personally. No, it,
00:27:15:16 –> 00:27:37:23
It does. It’s strictly about having, having something that you really want. And we have limited entry units in the state. We have a couple premiums, why do we have to mess and didn’t, did they cut the regular general too or the regular limited entries? Yeah, by five as well. Oh yeah. So the regular limited entry and the premiums both get cut. So it’s just like we’re, we’re vanilla and everything when it comes to deer
00:27:37:25 –> 00:27:38:28
Cut, you’re talking the buck to dough
00:27:38:28 –> 00:27:44:15
Ratio. Cut the buck to dough ratio, which means they’re gonna be able to increase tags. That what I’m talking about. Yeah. So it’s like you’re just
00:27:44:15 –> 00:27:57:27
Vanilla. It’s just having pride of having, having good quality deer management and having deer out on the, having some options. Options. And when you do apply, even if you are a 0.0, zero zero 1% or whatever, the people that get that tag can act actually have something. Yeah, actually,
00:27:58:02 –> 00:28:06:28
And I don’t even have family members. IIII have no skin in that game. No family members looking to draw premium deer or limit entry deer that, that have points to draw.
00:28:06:28 –> 00:28:28:01
But I think part of, part of that too is like why fight that fight? Like, like, like you’re, you’re bringing it up and we all think it, but then there’s a lot of guys out there that are like, it just doesn’t pertain to me. I’m, I’m doing elk like Wyatt, I’m doing elk over here. Although Wyatt’s passionate about deer, but he’s doing elk but doesn’t have any plans for his general because there’s no general to go
00:28:28:01 –> 00:28:48:21
Hunt necessarily. But that guy got his, you know, you know when the elk plan goes through and they lower age objectives on elk and they do stuff he has, they’re going over elk at some point this last year was the time the deer plan got amended. Yeah. So the elk has their turn and it may come again. It may, it’s the same thing when you have two decades plus worth of elk and now they’re gonna lower age objectives on elk and increase tags and spread out all your seasons
00:28:49:07 –> 00:28:51:10
Everyth like that and all that. So there’s a lot of,
00:28:51:22 –> 00:29:39:28
Now you can never hardly draw an early rifle tag. Right? So it’s there, there’s, there’s changes and, and some of that was, I’m, I’m not against in the elk world. I think we were set up from elk from the start kind of to be pigeonholed into a cornal corner. Every unit started with early rifle hunts and then maybe an archery got added and then the muzzles and then the lates. But the early rifles were already always in the rut. So we were kind of, we’re broken from the start in terms of maximizing opportunity and maintaining quality. But Deere’s a different story. Deere is just, let’s have some, let’s let our limited entry units, we’re only talking limited entry and premium together round 1500 deer tags in the state. And some might say, well that’s way too few. Nobody can ever get a chance. Okay. Yeah. When you get your chance, if it totally underwhelms you with what you have, you’re gonna say that was a waste of my 15, 20, 25 points. That’s all I’m saying.
00:29:40:01 –> 00:30:16:22
Yeah. So, and I think on, yeah, I think on top of that, like we could go, this is a bigger conversation, but we gotta give cash his 60 seconds at some point. Yeah, I took more, I’m sorry. But, but as far as all of these states have buck to door ratios that are 30 plus 30 to 35 bucks per hundred 25 Wyoming on a postseason Wyoming general. And they got OTC tags and their goals are 30 bucks per hundred dose Arizona, 30 bucks per hundred dose Nevada, 30 to 35 bucks per hundred dose. But for some reason in Utah, if they can be bred at five, we’re gonna shoot as close to five as we can on the, on the generals. Yeah. You know what I mean? And, and where does that come from? Is it coming from the southern rack?
00:30:17:10 –> 00:30:17:19
I don’t
00:30:17:19 –> 00:30:32:16
Know. Regional advisory council? No. And 90% of the guys didn’t want, didn’t want the tags increased and whatnot. And so, but they went ahead and voted for that and we ended up getting tag increases and so I just think, I think there’s a lot of challenges on that, so. Right.
00:30:34:19 –> 00:30:35:09
I’m letting cash
00:30:35:09 –> 00:30:38:12
Up head nods. Oh we are. Well I have to cash have to
00:30:38:15 –> 00:30:38:28
Please.
00:30:39:02 –> 00:30:41:23
Bronson took 60 seconds. How about you take 60 seconds?
00:30:42:18 –> 00:30:45:24
No, I’m, I’m depressed. Oh,
00:30:45:24 –> 00:30:46:15
Come on that.
00:30:46:27 –> 00:30:47:06
Well,
00:30:47:06 –> 00:30:48:22
Using Logan or how old are you?
00:30:49:00 –> 00:30:50:01
27 Logan.
00:30:50:01 –> 00:30:50:18
How? 24?
00:30:50:18 –> 00:31:26:11
That’s not why I’m depressed. I am, I would say I’m, I’m sad but I’m also like, okay, this is the perfect year to not be able to draw something for me. Yeah. There was, there was deer that I left last year that I would love to chase this year, but at the same time, they’re not gonna, they’re not gonna be what they should be like on a good moisture year this year. So it’s gonna be terrible. And so I’m like in the mindset of like, I’m perfectly happy not hunting Utah this year with how crappy the moisture’s been. ’cause I don’t want to go up and hunt the crowds up north. And so I’m gonna go further north where and hunt different states.
00:31:26:19 –> 00:31:27:25
Really? I didn’t know that
00:31:28:20 –> 00:31:29:07
You, you
00:31:29:14 –> 00:31:31:15
We’re gonna give you an extension on your 60 seconds.
00:31:32:09 –> 00:31:32:16
Fascinating.
00:31:33:08 –> 00:31:57:23
Well, it’s nothing special, you know that so we’ll, we’ll try to make good on something up there then outside of that just, just hunt, do some guiding, do that. Nothing too crazy for me this year. So just, just, just sad that it’s so crappy of a winter. Yeah, I like snowmobiling and I haven’t been able to snow snowmobile Cedar Mountain at all this year. Wonder
00:31:57:23 –> 00:32:06:07
A few weeks ago. And where did you have to, where did you have to go? I forgot to ask you. When you went, you took a Saturday or Friday off. Did you have to go to like Northern Montana second? Like
00:32:06:07 –> 00:32:06:17
Did you drive
00:32:06:17 –> 00:32:10:25
To the Yukon? Went to Alaska. No, I’m just kidding. No, I went up by Heber
00:32:11:25 –> 00:32:12:18
A It was good snow though, right?
00:32:12:18 –> 00:32:13:10
Yeah, it was good snow.
00:32:13:10 –> 00:32:16:22
Like this last storm I get. You get, oh, I had relatives that were in like four foot.
00:32:16:25 –> 00:32:23:11
Yeah, you get like past like north of Payson and it’s significantly better. You go down here, you’re you’re riding on dirt.
00:32:23:26 –> 00:32:25:18
Yeah. You’re riding four wheelers and side, side by
00:32:25:18 –> 00:32:26:17
Side. Yeah, exactly. But
00:32:26:17 –> 00:32:29:07
You know, what do you expect? We have sandstone here Exactly
00:32:30:01 –> 00:32:30:24
Mean just
00:32:31:14 –> 00:32:32:12
Cash. No, it’s
00:32:32:12 –> 00:32:34:13
True. It’s true. But even on the mountain, like there’s
00:32:34:13 –> 00:32:37:22
Not enough snow. You would hit rocks. You can’t even go to midway. You can’t
00:32:37:22 –> 00:32:37:23
Even
00:32:37:23 –> 00:32:39:16
Go to midway. Can’t go across the flat.
00:32:40:07 –> 00:32:41:05
It’s 10,000 feet.
00:32:41:12 –> 00:32:43:25
We like going up there. You drive across it’s
00:32:44:00 –> 00:32:44:21
Raw boulders.
00:32:44:22 –> 00:33:18:16
It might as well be May. Yeah. Like it’s ridiculous. And so no, it, I don’t know. I am, I kinda like what Adam was saying. I wish we would kinda leave some leftover bucks, have a chance at stuff. I similar to Adam, like I have no chance at drawing something, forcing the draw on something for a long time anyway. But I would really like to be able to chase something that’s worth, you know, 20 some odd points when I get to that point. But I’m afraid by the time I get to that point, it’s not gonna be there the way it’s the way it’s going. So something’s gotta change. But for
00:33:18:16 –> 00:33:33:07
The better, say you have no opportunity at drawing. There’s opportunity to draw. I mean there’s late muzzle order, limited entry hunts. There is, there’s book cliffs, there’s Vernons, there’s, there’s plenty of opportunity. You kill big books over there. Hams, hams. Plenty of opportunities for guys to draw tags that aren’t necessarily saying, hey, I want the best of the best. Right.
00:33:33:15 –> 00:33:33:23
I would say
00:33:33:29 –> 00:33:35:03
A lot of skews. But
00:33:35:03 –> 00:33:46:27
Yeah, I’d have to rephrase that. The, the couple tags that I would want. Yeah, I I’m not gonna force it for a while. There’s other ones that I could do that maybe I will one of these days if it, if it just is
00:33:46:27 –> 00:33:47:23
When you lose all hope.
00:33:47:23 –> 00:34:29:24
When I lose all hope kind of deal. But no, there is, there’s some good opportunity. I, I’ve spent a lot of time, I guess I shouldn’t say a lot of time. I’ve spent a few days every year on a couple or one unit for the last like 15 years and I’d really like to hunt it, but I’m just afraid it’s just, just too far gone. And unless something changes from now and the next 10 years, then we’ll we’ll do what we can. But other than that, just gonna have to start looking at new SKUs, things like that. Something outside of the box. In the meantime, if you get a good moisture year, probably have to go on something outside of the box and ditch the idea of the long game. You know, and I’m not opposed to that. But right now, just not the year to hunt Utah for me.
00:34:30:20 –> 00:34:50:19
Well you’re, you burn general points like you w or some, right? They’re gone for three to four years before you can get the TA unit you want again, so, right. Yep. It becomes, you wanna hedge your bets on burn them in what at least looks maybe on an upswing or good moisture year back to back moisture, whatever. It turns into that a little bit. Right. As much as you want to tag every year, right?
00:34:51:08 –> 00:35:00:21
Yep. Yep. Like I don’t, I don’t have the points to force anything to, to hunt the general. So I’m on a year like this, I’m okay with that. Okay. You’re let the deer have their, have their time.
00:35:01:08 –> 00:35:02:01
Let them not have
00:35:02:03 –> 00:35:02:29
Cash, bother ’em, not
00:35:03:09 –> 00:35:05:27
Let them not have cash after them. This year’s what you’re saying,
00:35:06:04 –> 00:35:07:11
I’m not that big of a threat.
00:35:09:06 –> 00:36:12:12
I don’t know. You, you’re on it cash, you’re aggressive. Well, I’m pretty, I’m pretty, I’m kind of excited. Okay, good. I’m excited. This is why I love the challenge. And the harder it gets, the more I, I love the challenge. What I don’t like is I haven’t killed a deer since 2019 because he and, and you feel like, I feel like I’m too picky for these times. And, and I, and I know I am. If you’re gonna kill deer, you’re gonna have to, you know, not go for giants. ’cause there’s just not a lot of ’em out there on the landscape. But I still am excited. I love having a clean slate. I love all the skews in Utah. I think it’s personally, I think it’s a bandaid. I think you, there’s no no substitute for cutting tags if you’re gonna want quality. Plain and simple. I was watching Idaho’s proposals and they, they simply said it, if you’re gonna have tags, you have tags. If you’re not gonna have tags, you’ll have quality. But then nobody can go hunt, hunt the quality that’s there because there’s no tags. Like they just went through it all. And what do we want as hunters, you know? And so, I mean it’s, so here we do,
00:36:12:15 –> 00:36:13:29
So you’re talking the bandaid, meaning like band
00:36:13:29 –> 00:36:57:19
Bandaid, their weapon stuff, band weapon Yeah. The weapon restrictions and things like that. It, and are we not all a little bit hopeful that there’ll be a little change. Like we’re all just a little hopeful that some deer slide through and make it New Mexico doing the iron sites. Yeah. Success rates didn’t change. In some cases. Some cases like antelope with open sight muzzle orders. Yeah, yeah. Success was less. But the wound loss and all these other factors come in that are intangibles. ’cause it’s, you know, you don’t have exact figures on what that means and what that looked like. So I just, so who knows if that really helps quality but somewhat of a bandaid to, to appease the public and continue issue tax. That’s, that’s what it feels like the DW R’s trying to do. And, and I, I don’t blame ’em. They wanna do, they want their objective to happen.
00:36:57:22 –> 00:38:06:12
We want our objective to happen. And then there’s guys downtown that we eat lunch with or whatever that have a whole different perspective. But, but as far as you know, that I like the different SKUs. What does this mean? We’ve talked along a, along a lot about hams or these new kind of couple new opportunities and there, and it does give you, one thing it does is it hones spreads pressure in on, on a specific Yeah. Finite area at a specific time of year that’s never had that. And so that will, and in the long term hurt the quality that once was there, but we all don’t know what was there. ’cause we were, we’re, you know, whatever Henry’s little Rockies or whatever we’re talking about. So it’s interesting. I think it’s interesting. I think too we’re in this long term drought era and we kind of gotta learn how to, how to hunt in it and accept it a little bit is is, you know, we had a lot of deer showing up on the winter range. And so there were some things like off pengu or whatever, there were some positives that we saw that was kind of like, yeah, they’re all little tiny bucks. Yeah. But there was some, like, there was a little breath of fresh
00:38:06:12 –> 00:38:12:17
Air. Oh yeah. There’s for a minute. There’s plenty of bucks out there to, to shoot. You know, a lot of ’em Yeah. Are just, they’re just young deer.
00:38:12:17 –> 00:39:19:23
They’re just young deer. And that’s what we’re all disgusted about and, and continue to be disgusted about. I think when, like when, when you said that we’re too far gone, I cash when cash made, the comment is too far gone. Remember Bronson, how far gone Colorado was before they went to a draw system and how fast it can turn around. It’s actually can turn around really fast. We just have to decide the DWR, whatever the state management has to decide to make a change and it will change. We’re all, we can’t fix the weather. I get that you pray for rain. But anyway, I don’t ever believe, I don’t ever wanna believe that anything’s too far gone. I just think maybe the perception sometimes it feels like it’s too far gone because the new biologist didn’t see the heyday like cash. You didn’t see what we saw, you know what I mean? Or Logan, he didn’t see what his dad saw. You know? And when you see it and it’s tangible of, I, I’ll bet you from now till the day I die, I don’t see a 10th of the bucks. I didn’t even harvest. Remember all the bucks we were seeing? Why, remember Adam, the ones that
00:39:19:23 –> 00:39:20:00
Quote
00:39:20:07 –> 00:39:30:04
Away, the ones that got away. I mean, I have specific, we all have specific name bucks that got away. I haven’t seen one of that caliber since 20 19 20
00:39:30:20 –> 00:40:08:04
Or something, you know what I mean? And so what’s, what’s, what do we got for the, from, from now till the time we’re dead compared to what we lived through from 2005 to 2019 or 17? You know? And so anyway, how do we get back to those times? But I think the challenge is fun. I think the, I think New Mexico people are like, oh, I don’t know about the drought and this and that and I feel the same way. I, I don’t want it to be a drought in New Mexico, but there’s no points. Let’s, let’s go hunt, learn a unit and then go back if we can. You know what I mean? That’s kind of, I don’t know, is that a too much of a positive spin for everybody?
00:40:08:07 –> 00:40:40:28
No, no. It, I I know what you mean. It, I guess you could liken it. Switching states to, I mean I got lucky drew in elk tag in Arizona and it’s not supposed to be great here at all. And I have a lot of people saying, why’d you do that? Well, I don’t know because I have minimal points and I’m not gonna not put in for a random archery elk tag in a quality unit. I’m not gonna sit it out when you have random points. So yeah, I’m kind of fired up to go down there and dig something up. Yes. I mean I may get my butt kicked for 14 days, but it’s a little bit of a challenge, a little bit of a see what, what maybe could happen. You know, there is that component. I
00:40:40:28 –> 00:41:01:28
Can go back to that auction buck that was killed out here in Nevada years ago. We all know the buck ends up at two forties and how cool is that, that there was an absolute giant on such a tough year. Yeah. And it kind of shocked everybody. Like where did he come from? What were I area? Did he live, you know, where he was sheltered from this drought that was going on. And so yeah, things are,
00:41:01:29 –> 00:41:10:04
There are exceptions. There’s always exceptions. Your Arizona buck was in a dry year. Your goofy bull we’ve talked about 15 times was in the 2002.
00:41:10:21 –> 00:41:14:16
Yeah. Well, two, we killed him in oh three, but 2002 he
00:41:14:16 –> 00:41:22:25
Was bigger. Was the Yeah, it was like, and it was like the worst year other than this winter we’re living through right now. 2002 is the last one like this that I personally remember.
00:41:22:26 –> 00:41:38:00
Yeah. And then prior to that was 96. And, and you know, and so anyway, but he was bigger. And I think it goes back to what Wyatt was saying is the bigger bulls, well we were all talking about it, bigger bulls dry years aren’t so bad for, for, for big elk, you know, and that proved it. I mean that was,
00:41:38:18 –> 00:42:11:19
It’s, it’s possible in some of these units, like I said that have more of a mountain component that, and we, we will get a lot of like heavy moisture storms in March, April that time. Yeah. If we get some of that moisture that would say a normal moisture even it could be amazing really because some of these deer, they’ve maintained some body condition better than what they have in a, in a heavy winter with lots of snow, which we kind of generally like to see or talk about. So it could be still be exceptional. It’s just at the moment it doesn’t look, doesn’t
00:42:11:19 –> 00:42:27:28
Look that amazing. I think there’s some cycles too that happen that we don’t understand all the variables. You know, fawns born on certain Yes. Wet years and now all of a sudden they’re, they’re awesome. The out in that sand country, I mean on drought years they’re still giant bucks. Yeah, yeah. You know what I mean? And so, but well the
00:42:27:28 –> 00:42:40:28
Deer densities are so low, like there’s enough, they can still all go out and eat ice cream plants, you know, out in that country. Yeah. It somehow they eek it out. It looks like this would be a terrible place to live. But a lot of years it looks like that in a good year.
00:42:41:08 –> 00:43:08:06
And I, it’d be interesting to see like elk ages, but that’s one thing that I think why, you know, last year there was a lot of really good bulls on some of these units, but you go back and look and say, okay, what age were those bulls? Were they six, seven, 8-year-old bulls? Which a lot of ’em were. And they were born in 2017 to 2019 timeframe and a couple really good years that year. So bulls born that year are gonna reach a little better potential at a younger age. And so that could have been why a lot of those bulls were that size
00:43:08:06 –> 00:43:58:28
On some of these, these mandatory, you know, harvest reports and tooth data and things like that. Like, like Justin’s bull came back, he’s 13 years old, you know. But if we’re ma, if we’re managing off of age structure, which, you know, for elk, we kinda consider that. Yeah. You know, you could possibly see some tag increases on some of that stuff now that all this, when all this data comes back. Oh yeah. And it’s, there’s a lot of data and it’s interesting, but it, it, you know, anyway, sometimes, sometimes it was nice game and fish is really good at managing right to the exact line of what they want nowadays with all of the new age management tactics, strategies, taller data, survey data, teeth cutting, yada yada. And, and sometimes it was nice when they didn’t know what was out on the landscape and they didn’t give as many tags as the formula said they could
00:43:59:17 –> 00:44:04:22
Like code like Colorado, when they cut tags, went to a draw and they, they under harvested for about five years. Yeah.
00:44:04:27 –> 00:44:14:29
What’s wrong with that? Or some of these desert units in Nevada, it’s like, we did an aerial survey, we saw four deer. There’s no deer and there’s deer. They’re just not, you just can’t go see ’em in helicopter Sometimes
00:44:14:29 –> 00:44:16:28
The biological accidents are good. Yeah,
00:44:17:15 –> 00:44:30:13
That’s exactly, that’s what you hope for is biological accidents. Yes. It’s, and and if we’re in that day, day and age, it’s sad. Yeah. But as trophy hunters to see a little bit of quality, you’re just praying that something gets overlooked.
00:44:30:19 –> 00:44:32:10
No one else saw it too. Yeah.
00:44:33:15 –> 00:44:48:28
I dunno. Anyway, I’m excited, I’m excited for better talk. But we also hunt multiple states and, and here at Epic Outdoors we cover multiple states. So, so we could always like, okay, this isn’t so good, let’s go to Wyoming, let’s go to Idaho, let’s go to somewhere else.
00:44:49:09 –> 00:44:50:24
Yeah. Which cash like his, his,
00:44:51:14 –> 00:44:52:00
He’s talking about,
00:44:52:03 –> 00:44:54:13
I don’t even know what you’re talking about. Don’t I wish I could feel the vibe.
00:44:54:15 –> 00:44:56:17
You why remember ran me into it.
00:44:56:17 –> 00:44:57:21
There was, there
00:44:57:21 –> 00:44:58:21
Was three people in this office
00:44:58:21 –> 00:44:59:07
That, oh,
00:45:00:03 –> 00:45:05:25
The gem state. I didn’t you I I thought that we were just throwing that out on an early morning. It wasn’t even something I figured you
00:45:06:12 –> 00:45:17:17
Yeah. On you. There’s the one that you reigned me into that I do have a tag for. And then there’s an idea that if, if I can convince a buddy enough that it could go through and happen, you could
00:45:17:17 –> 00:45:18:19
Point boost off that sucker.
00:45:18:24 –> 00:45:24:24
I could potentially, you’re talking Wyoming. If he’s, if he’s really kind and and wants to do it, I would really willingly go with him.
00:45:25:27 –> 00:45:26:06
Well,
00:45:26:17 –> 00:45:26:25
Well
00:45:26:25 –> 00:45:27:07
Anyway
00:45:27:15 –> 00:45:29:23
Of my plan too. But I might just hunt elk this, but
00:45:29:23 –> 00:45:30:21
It’s been good, good moisture
00:45:30:21 –> 00:45:34:07
Up there. It has, that’s why I’m like, I’m gonna go. Like if I could go, I would go.
00:45:34:20 –> 00:45:34:27
But
00:45:34:27 –> 00:45:47:28
Yeah, no. Kind of retracting back to what I said, not retracting anything. I said I am, I’m a, the thing that made me sad this year is just no snow. Like you just hope for a good year every year. And that just makes me sad. Yeah.
00:45:48:07 –> 00:45:54:13
That’s the snowmobile in you more than, more than the hunter and the outdoorsmen. Like I don’t think you care about wildlife that much. Do I
00:45:54:13 –> 00:45:56:19
Think it’s the snowmobile? No, no. I’m talking,
00:45:56:29 –> 00:45:58:10
I love to chase ’em with my snowmobile.
00:45:58:12 –> 00:46:07:00
I’m, I like to chase bucks with horns that are about to fall off. Do you do that cash? No. Absolutely. Have you taken the shed on In course. Do you realize that causes stress? Yeah,
00:46:07:21 –> 00:46:10:29
I don’t do that. I haven’t done it. Okay. I can honestly say that no
00:46:11:04 –> 00:46:11:28
Une unequivocally.
00:46:12:07 –> 00:46:16:04
Unequivocally. I have not done that. But no, it’s just, yeah.
00:46:17:03 –> 00:46:19:17
What do we frustrate you or do we fluer you a little bit?
00:46:19:18 –> 00:46:20:27
No, not at all. Lose your
00:46:20:27 –> 00:46:21:10
Train of thought.
00:46:21:19 –> 00:46:22:22
No, lose my train of thought.
00:46:22:27 –> 00:46:25:10
A normal mo a normal moisture year has always just
00:46:25:10 –> 00:46:28:04
Helped. Oh, you have more optimism. Yeah. Healthier for
00:46:28:04 –> 00:46:28:11
The soil.
00:46:29:07 –> 00:46:30:05
For the soil. Those,
00:46:30:05 –> 00:46:35:15
Those plant roots get a little deeper so when you run ’em over it’s not as, not as bad, you know? I’m just kidding. Jeez.
00:46:36:11 –> 00:46:37:05
Well, what I
00:46:37:05 –> 00:46:39:17
Like, we can have something on cash. We keep, keep him going.
00:46:40:09 –> 00:46:41:16
That’s okay. Try me,
00:46:41:21 –> 00:46:57:12
Let’s talk about the rest of Utah so we can actually cover the state. We’ve hammered deer over, which that’s what we all like and love. But I mean, let’s, let’s do, what are the highlights, Wyatt? When do we, when can we apply? We gotta apply by April 24th. It opens up March 20th. Can’t even hunt or apply for three weeks more.
00:46:57:24 –> 00:46:59:18
But yeah, people are talking about like crazy
00:46:59:21 –> 00:47:07:24
Well, people are trained. Utah was always in February, right? With like a March 1st ish deadline and people are still, I don’t know, that’s ingrained in ’em. So
00:47:07:27 –> 00:47:10:17
The good thing is now though, you get an idea of permit numbers and
00:47:10:17 –> 00:48:05:24
That kind of thing. Yeah. There’s a reason for it. Which, which does, yep. It does help a lot. And you got two more months from today, yesterday, whenever, two, two more months to, to wait to see what moisture’s gonna be like. Yep. But like you said, usually about the fifth to the 10th of April, now they’ll have permit numbers out and, and you know, generally, you know, like we’ve been talking here, those are based on management plan objectives. Whether they be, you know, teeth, ages with elk and that kind of drives permit numbers buck to do ratio on deer. You know, when it comes to once a lifetime species, I almost never see those change from the time they’re proposed, the time you apply. And so, yeah, that’s, that’s a good thing. We’ve been, we put that awful lot, especially if you’re a high point holder in Utah and you are looking at a maximum point tag or you’re looking at a tag that’s gonna go from a one a hunt that’s gonna go from a one tag non-resident year to a two. That’s pretty big deal. So look
00:48:05:28 –> 00:48:08:11
For that in April. We’ll see those in April. Yeah. Then you
00:48:08:11 –> 00:48:09:21
Can look for that in April and
00:48:10:00 –> 00:48:14:13
You can amend if you’ve already applied or Yeah. Or you can just apply once you see some of that,
00:48:15:07 –> 00:48:33:07
Depending on when you got your license. Some people like to apply, get a two for on their license, you know, and then, you know, I guess you could amend, if you amend, you’d have to buy a new license. We’ve had that run people into that. Yes. Remember if you’ve mend the last day your license expired, you’re gonna pay what? 120? 120 bucks. One 20 bucks just to man, better bid it. But
00:48:33:07 –> 00:48:35:04
You’re good for the next year. So whatever. Yeah,
00:48:35:04 –> 00:49:01:10
That’s right. They’re good for next year. So, but far as once a lifetime species breezing over those, I mean the biggest thing that I saw was they had a dramatic reduction in, in goat and bison tags this year. Mostly bison tags were reduc reduced in the book cliffs, goat tags in some units as well. So skews for those for non-residents especially. Got cut way back. We had like two pages of bison hunts last year. This year we didn’t take up half
00:49:01:10 –> 00:49:03:00
Of. It’s kind of nice. It was a present fresh
00:49:03:00 –> 00:49:04:29
Air quite. I’m gonna predict something though, potentially.
00:49:05:02 –> 00:49:05:21
Whoa. Oh,
00:49:06:22 –> 00:49:06:29
If
00:49:07:03 –> 00:49:07:23
Take the mic,
00:49:08:10 –> 00:49:11:22
If we do not get the spring moisture and such. Oh
00:49:11:24 –> 00:49:12:24
Yes, I know where you’re going.
00:49:13:21 –> 00:49:16:29
Those tags could be the GNA back in and added the
00:49:17:09 –> 00:49:21:07
Gnashing of teeth from cattlemen throughout the book. Cliffs and Henry’s are you,
00:49:21:12 –> 00:49:21:22
Is gonna be
00:49:21:24 –> 00:49:22:06
Sold loud.
00:49:22:26 –> 00:49:23:27
An educated guest. Josh.
00:49:24:01 –> 00:49:24:22
It’s happened before.
00:49:25:01 –> 00:49:27:09
I’ve learned. I know, I know. But I mean by, have you’ve been hearing
00:49:28:09 –> 00:49:28:27
Rumblings? No, no.
00:49:29:05 –> 00:49:30:18
He’s lifted through the same thing. You’re
00:49:30:18 –> 00:49:34:05
Just trying to basic trying to basically cut the, you know, I,
00:49:34:13 –> 00:49:35:12
I could see that be
00:49:35:12 –> 00:49:37:17
The animal usage off of these units that are dry.
00:49:37:29 –> 00:49:47:28
They’re probably, whether we get spring moisture or not, there will be a charge to the racks and the board to increase elk tags. Yeah. Bison tags. Any of those kind of in
00:49:47:28 –> 00:49:49:12
The name of drought. Elk tags or
00:49:49:12 –> 00:49:50:13
In the name, in the name of drought. Yeah.
00:49:50:22 –> 00:49:52:01
You couldn’t increases
00:49:52:01 –> 00:49:58:05
Due to that. Like non-residents. They’re not gonna like say, hey we’ll give non residents now tags so that that, but the resident tags are
00:49:58:08 –> 00:50:01:23
Gonna go up non-resident tags. It could affect non-resident too at 10%
00:50:01:25 –> 00:50:23:06
In the, in the five, four or five units that they were so they could apply. But yeah, that’s a good point. Sheep are doing good. Rockies aren’t doing as good as deserts. Goats are doing okay to good, but, but yeah, elk. I don’t know. We’ve talked a little bit about elk, but man, how many hunts do we got right there? Count that one on the beaver. How many hunts do we got on beaver? Like almost every has
00:50:23:06 –> 00:50:28:13
That. We got archery, early rifle muzzle mid late. And then the late rifle six, the late archery, which is Wyatt’s favorite
00:50:28:26 –> 00:50:31:24
Six archery hunts on there. And here you got like states like Arizona.
00:50:32:00 –> 00:50:34:22
It’s actually, we should clarify. It’s not Wyatt’s favorite necessarily.
00:50:34:25 –> 00:50:35:01
No
00:50:35:02 –> 00:50:37:03
It’s not. But it gives him an opportunity to go
00:50:37:03 –> 00:50:46:10
Out. No, we’ve been teasing because Wyatt is, you know, more of a deer guy and he’s got five years to draw an elk tag. And the reality of of that is it’s gonna have to be something
00:50:46:14 –> 00:50:48:15
Go where the odds are less desirable. The bulls are big.
00:50:48:18 –> 00:50:58:29
Hey, I do have to say though, you know, last year you look at it, last year to this year, the conditions were significantly different on that hunt. Oh yeah. And harvest was, there was harvest this year. There was
00:50:59:07 –> 00:51:01:04
A, there was harvest B there was a couple big bulls.
00:51:01:04 –> 00:51:13:11
There was some big bulls. So really, if you lucky with, with weather and such, it can be, and a lot of times these guys, they’re actually, I haven’t talked to guys that really hated them. They actually kind of like ’em. They get out they glass
00:51:13:17 –> 00:51:15:19
Bulls dry years. Yeah. Drought years go late.
00:51:15:27 –> 00:51:27:13
Yes. They, they, they glass bulls, they’re on big bulls and hunting big bulls with those tags. It’s just when you’re trying to get into 50 yards in thick mahogany that you can’t see through, it’s hard to close that if any
00:51:27:13 –> 00:51:28:21
Cold, crunchy snow on the ground.
00:51:29:04 –> 00:51:30:22
But yeah, there were bulls harvested this year
00:51:31:06 –> 00:51:31:23
Was of
00:51:31:23 –> 00:51:37:06
Bear ground. Remember we had the Monroe Lake kid kill that big old archery bowl too. You know, beaver Lake, whatever. Yeah.
00:51:37:16 –> 00:51:41:13
So anyway, that’s something to keep in mind with that, with that hunt I guess. But it
00:51:41:13 –> 00:51:43:13
Was fun trying to sell Wyatt on that. I guess what
00:51:43:17 –> 00:51:48:27
Wyatt doesn’t hunt elk Postoc October 1st. That’s right. We’ve heard that retired. Just
00:51:48:27 –> 00:51:49:22
Say why did he apply?
00:51:50:07 –> 00:51:50:13
He,
00:51:50:19 –> 00:51:51:23
I haven’t applied. He an
00:51:51:28 –> 00:51:53:11
You promised once can do antelope.
00:51:54:11 –> 00:51:55:04
I’ll eat the tag.
00:51:56:12 –> 00:51:56:18
She,
00:51:57:03 –> 00:51:59:18
Although I don’t, I don’t care to save an elk too badly either though. He
00:51:59:18 –> 00:52:00:15
Can’t mentor to case
00:52:00:15 –> 00:52:08:15
You’re gonna wound four and kill one. Why? Why are, why don’t you like yolk? WI
00:52:08:15 –> 00:52:17:23
Don’t, I don’t know. They just never really fascinated me like a mule deer has kind of deal. They just, I mean when I’m back guiding days, they were just easy money kind of deal.
00:52:17:26 –> 00:52:18:12
Big yellow school
00:52:18:20 –> 00:52:22:05
Bus, big yellow school bus. They were easy money. They were,
00:52:22:09 –> 00:52:25:09
You pack a couple out of a few canyons that makes you hate em. Hate them
00:52:25:09 –> 00:52:28:18
Too, right? Yes. Deep canyons, knee deep snow, things like that. They,
00:52:29:04 –> 00:52:31:00
I feel like that one time we killed one in January
00:52:31:10 –> 00:52:33:03
Was the was it for you? Yes, I
00:52:33:20 –> 00:52:35:04
Was that was that that
00:52:35:04 –> 00:52:35:16
Definitely
00:52:35:16 –> 00:52:38:12
The the Dutton ish country. Rugged, gnarly.
00:52:38:12 –> 00:52:41:01
Yes. It was rugged, gnarly, nasty country. And it was January.
00:52:41:14 –> 00:52:41:23
It was
00:52:41:23 –> 00:52:43:19
Cold. Weren’t you guys in town a fair bit?
00:52:44:07 –> 00:52:46:28
I I failed out of three classes ’cause of that hunt college
00:52:47:10 –> 00:52:48:05
Before it even started.
00:52:48:19 –> 00:52:50:25
I know that’s probably the hunt I hear the most about.
00:52:51:00 –> 00:52:51:11
I, it’s
00:52:51:20 –> 00:52:54:01
There’s some deep rooted hate.
00:52:54:06 –> 00:52:55:07
Let’s not go there.
00:52:55:20 –> 00:52:59:16
Sounds like my grandpa’s going to school story knee deep snow both ways.
00:53:00:22 –> 00:53:04:06
Yellow to the bus stop. A yellow bus. Yeah,
00:53:04:07 –> 00:53:04:22
Exactly.
00:53:05:00 –> 00:53:06:18
Yellow school bus. The bus broke
00:53:06:18 –> 00:53:08:15
Down. Had to pack it out. It was terrible.
00:53:08:24 –> 00:53:09:15
This was terrible.
00:53:10:15 –> 00:53:47:00
What are you guys’ thoughts on some of these elk counts? I mean the archery, early rifle, muscle loaders, late rifles have been around a long time. But we got this new, I mean the late archery is what it is. It’s purely an opportunity hunt. There’s a few tags in Arizona and units like that that have it just for some low point opportunity. That’s what those December arteries are in Utah. And like we said, like Josh said two years ago it was like Antarctica in Utah, even on the late rifle hunt. And then in December it was even worse. It was rough Last year we had bare ground pretty much everywhere. But we’re about the new mid-season hunt. ’cause that’s where the bulk of the tags are. That’s where the odds are the best. If you, you look at random odds, but
00:53:47:13 –> 00:53:47:22
What
00:53:47:22 –> 00:53:48:06
You gotta be careful
00:53:48:06 –> 00:54:01:23
About, I tell that to non-residents all the time that it’s not a bad option for a non-resident. I just tell ’em your hunt is like the three to five days before the hunt. That’s the way I would treat it and kill that sucker at first life. First line opening.
00:54:02:04 –> 00:54:03:18
Why is that? Educate.
00:54:03:18 –> 00:54:15:07
Because if you don’t, a lot of people when the spiker hunter show up Spiker RSRs. Yeah. It’s not gonna be the experience you envision. Your, your hunt is the hunt before the hunt. That’s what I tell guys, but
00:54:15:09 –> 00:54:22:04
Yep. And it’s, it is a good opportunity if it’s to watch the season dates on it. You could get some, some rutting still some
00:54:22:04 –> 00:54:24:18
Bugling. Oh, Southwest desert. It’s, it was actually an awesome hunt.
00:54:24:25 –> 00:54:28:05
Yeah. You could still get, so if you wanting, if you’re wanting a rut hunt,
00:54:28:11 –> 00:54:28:24
It’s not even
00:54:29:23 –> 00:54:30:12
Consider that one still.
00:54:30:20 –> 00:54:31:24
It’s gonna be full blown.
00:54:32:00 –> 00:54:34:12
I think I’m gonna switch from deer to elks
00:54:35:22 –> 00:54:36:24
And there are some units
00:54:37:15 –> 00:54:39:19
I like the elk. The two things like what I need a big bull.
00:54:39:24 –> 00:54:53:13
Two things that I’ve noticed with that hunt. And I guess sometimes it could be unit specific, but you have to deal with s spike hunters no matter what. Yeah. That’s a general season over the counter tag for guys here. Yeah. And and so guy and there’s a lot of people that do it. It’s the only oak tag in Utah that you can buy at.
00:54:53:29 –> 00:54:55:25
It’s a family reunions based around
00:54:55:25 –> 00:54:56:27
That. It’s replace that. But
00:54:56:27 –> 00:55:07:18
It’s a long hunt. It’s the, that’s the fourth to the 16th. Correct. And I would contend that that that opening three days is a flurry. Yes. And then probably the next weekend’s a flurry weekends,
00:55:07:18 –> 00:55:07:25
The weekends
00:55:07:25 –> 00:55:10:19
Middle of the week, you’re probably gonna, you’re gonna have a relaxation.
00:55:10:25 –> 00:55:14:21
I feel like flurry is a soft word. I think I’d use like war zone. Something
00:55:14:21 –> 00:55:17:12
More extreme. But you would rather have that than lay archery.
00:55:17:13 –> 00:55:20:16
I’m trying. I agree. I’m just saying it is, there’s a, there will a
00:55:20:22 –> 00:55:22:22
Lot of people, it’s not a limited early rifle experience.
00:55:22:22 –> 00:55:24:11
No. There will be a lot of people on the landscape.
00:55:24:24 –> 00:55:28:25
And then the other thing would be you, you’ll get bulls move, which can be going your favor.
00:55:29:08 –> 00:55:30:24
That’s bulls bull show up
00:55:31:06 –> 00:55:34:29
Last year that early archery was legit. You know guys really like that one. Yeah.
00:55:35:16 –> 00:55:45:03
Yep. ’cause I know I’d, I’d passed up a bull on my hunt and it was just a week later and it was killed eight miles north. Wow. Eight miles north of there On
00:55:45:03 –> 00:55:45:25
The mid hunt. Yeah,
00:55:45:25 –> 00:55:47:18
On the mid. On the mid hunt. So it
00:55:47:18 –> 00:56:09:19
Is true, it is a mixing and I think it’s partly just later rut and they’re moving more and then maybe pressure from the spikers. Yeah. Like you just got a, an onslaught rather than a flurry. It’s an onslaught of hunting pressure. Is that a better word, Devin? Yeah, I like that better. An onslaught. Yeah. Of of I guess you can’t even call it an orange army. You only have to have a hat in Utah now. So it’s just, just, just on army. It’s not the orange army.
00:56:09:21 –> 00:56:10:23
I would be dressed head to toe.
00:56:10:24 –> 00:56:16:27
Yeah. Most it’s like Colorado. I’m grateful. I mean when I go to Colorado, I’m grateful to drape orange head.
00:56:17:05 –> 00:56:18:16
I look back at Trevor’s mid hunt.
00:56:18:27 –> 00:56:19:21
I’m appreciate,
00:56:19:27 –> 00:56:22:28
I’m a sticker guy that wraps trucks. I’m gonna wrap mine in orange. Right?
00:56:23:24 –> 00:56:26:00
We had yeah, like hoards of cross
00:56:26:02 –> 00:56:26:21
Fires, hoards
00:56:26:21 –> 00:56:30:27
Of people, helicopters hauling out guys that were having medical emergencies. Like it was,
00:56:31:01 –> 00:56:32:04
Oh it was no joke. It
00:56:32:08 –> 00:56:34:15
It was crazy. Can be insane depending on where
00:56:34:15 –> 00:56:37:10
You’re at. But some of those guys didn’t, didn’t really belong where they were. Nope.
00:56:38:09 –> 00:57:02:18
And I would say there are some units that do have a lot certain elk units that have really concentrated elk on summer range. And that’s where everybody’s gonna be for big bulls and Spikers and everything. And then there’s other units like Southwest Desert, I’m just throwing. Or maybe even a San Juan. There’s some units that are so giant that there are fringe areas. You can go, you can get away. But there’s some units you pen, which is not really one of those.
00:57:02:28 –> 00:57:03:23
I love the fringes.
00:57:04:02 –> 00:57:15:23
And you could use that to your advantage. Find a rogue bull that’s left cows generally probably is gonna be a bigger bull if he’s doing that. Probably left the cows and you could find him just out feeding by himself and smoke a giant on that hunt still. Yeah.
00:57:16:18 –> 00:57:17:09
Yeah. Exactly.
00:57:18:07 –> 00:57:18:22
Alright.
00:57:19:08 –> 00:57:22:01
Why you’re perusing some stats there. What you’re, you’re looking some Well
00:57:22:01 –> 00:57:23:12
He’s getting excited about the school. Buses.
00:57:23:12 –> 00:57:35:04
Buses. Well he notices a 40% kill rate on the boulder. Late archery. He’s pointing it out to me. Yeah. Maybe I shouldn’t have said that with a hot mic. Maybe that was what you’re gonna apply for. Some of ’em were kind of surprising honestly. That also means two outta five people late.
00:57:35:10 –> 00:57:39:16
You’re looking six. Let’s keep in mind what that really means. It’s a pair of hardcore dudes.
00:57:39:16 –> 00:57:41:19
Guys are getting it done with those bows. Late
00:57:41:19 –> 00:57:44:12
Season. Okay, good. Drawing off. But maybe they had crossbow permits.
00:57:44:17 –> 00:57:47:13
Yeah, possibly. That was six. Is that six? Six happened to hurt
00:57:47:13 –> 00:57:48:00
Their shoulder
00:57:48:00 –> 00:57:50:28
End of October. So that’s three out of five. Yeah. Pengu Lake. Geez.
00:57:51:13 –> 00:57:51:19
We
00:57:51:19 –> 00:57:58:29
Had a, we had a member. Why are we, we had a member come and kill a bow on there. I I remember talking to him. He came and he killed in the first three days and on
00:57:58:29 –> 00:58:01:21
The, on the Penguin lake. Yeah. Put it in late
00:58:01:21 –> 00:58:04:17
Archery, put it in a plane and flew home. So I mean it’s,
00:58:05:08 –> 00:58:09:28
Well anyway, and and we’re saying this because of skews because Utah’s a very tough state.
00:58:09:29 –> 00:58:11:27
That was a very deliberate comment. What do you
00:58:11:27 –> 00:58:13:06
Mean? Put it in a plane? Plane
00:58:13:09 –> 00:58:14:07
Flew home three days later.
00:58:14:07 –> 00:58:17:00
He, three days later he was home after killing a bull. I mean,
00:58:18:08 –> 00:58:19:23
Okay, keep going Bronson.
00:58:20:00 –> 00:58:21:11
No, I’m just saying Pollock
00:58:21:15 –> 00:58:21:28
Excuse
00:58:22:13 –> 00:58:24:19
Excuses. And if you’re low point totals skew
00:58:24:20 –> 00:58:28:00
Create opportunity. What I like about what I do like about spreads out one choice
00:58:28:00 –> 00:58:28:11
Counts. Spread
00:58:28:11 –> 00:58:30:05
Applicants too. One choice counts. Okay. If you had, if you
00:58:30:05 –> 00:58:32:17
Could do five choices like Nevada and Utah, this,
00:58:33:09 –> 00:58:53:19
It wouldn’t even be the same. No. So one choice counts even two choices, even three choices. Like New Mexico kind of ruins it. But two choices. Like Arizona. No thanks. I think the one choice makes a guy do what he really wants to do. I like it For Wyatt to be laid archery elk. I mean he really wants to do it. He’s gonna apply for it. He’s gonna pray. He gets it maybe. And then he’s gonna burn the tag or shoot five of ’em.
00:58:54:22 –> 00:58:55:05
That’s,
00:58:55:18 –> 00:58:56:11
We should maybe
00:58:56:11 –> 00:58:57:07
Shoot five and burn the
00:58:57:07 –> 00:59:00:06
Tag. Maybe he’ll shoot five and not tag one. I, I don’t know.
00:59:00:22 –> 00:59:02:07
I would never shoot of ’em.
00:59:02:08 –> 00:59:03:06
We gotta have disclaimers
00:59:03:06 –> 00:59:05:06
On here. People we’re not serious. It’s never
00:59:05:06 –> 00:59:09:09
Gonna shoot five. But he hates out ’cause it takes away from deer habitat and everything else. Three, whatever. It’s
00:59:09:09 –> 00:59:10:27
Three is an allowable wounding loss amount.
00:59:11:05 –> 00:59:12:04
Let’s go, let’s
00:59:12:04 –> 00:59:14:04
Play the, but I love the skews. There’s, there’s
00:59:14:26 –> 00:59:19:11
The, let’s play the wood. You rather game with Wyatt on be, because we’re talking OB skews. Let’s
00:59:19:11 –> 00:59:20:28
Do it. Would you rather?
00:59:21:09 –> 00:59:25:01
Okay. Why? I’m just gonna pick Beaver because everybody knows
00:59:25:13 –> 00:59:34:03
It’s a really pick something. He really has an affection for Monroe. Okay. Monroe El versus versus Henry’s or, or Ps.
00:59:34:29 –> 00:59:35:17
Well that’s a
00:59:35:25 –> 00:59:37:21
You talking I Henry’s OTCL.
00:59:39:21 –> 00:59:43:22
No, I’m talking about elk versus deer. Okay, let’s go. Let’s whatever.
00:59:44:06 –> 00:59:48:23
Let’s whatever later tree, tree hunt you would put on your top of your list for elk. Whatever that is. Or
00:59:49:26 –> 00:59:52:23
Wait, what is that? I wanna know. There’s, there’s a lot of people that wanna know.
00:59:52:24 –> 00:59:57:13
Okay. Beaver Monroe. Probably not Boulder. Even though we pointed out 40%. That’s a, that’s a, that
00:59:58:09 –> 01:00:01:06
Probably something closer to home. If I could stay in my house and
01:00:01:21 –> 01:00:02:00
What?
01:00:03:06 –> 01:00:05:12
Let’s see. Monroe, beaver,
01:00:05:24 –> 01:00:06:05
Penit,
01:00:06:23 –> 01:00:07:04
Penit
01:00:07:15 –> 01:00:15:01
Or Boulder. Let’s, let’s do any of those three or or San Juan early rifle hunt your roots, your elk, early rifle hunt on Wasatch.
01:00:16:29 –> 01:00:18:19
Probably the early white rifle hunt. Our Wasatch.
01:00:18:22 –> 01:00:19:16
You really want that?
01:00:20:01 –> 01:00:20:18
No, but
01:00:21:00 –> 01:00:23:00
I love this quiet. He really doesn’t
01:00:23:00 –> 01:00:25:16
Hunt elk after October 1st. He
01:00:25:16 –> 01:00:26:28
Won’t quiets day.
01:00:26:28 –> 01:00:29:19
I’m testing that theory and that is probably it true. If he said that it’s
01:00:29:19 –> 01:00:31:01
True, you would not go to Wasatch.
01:00:31:21 –> 01:00:34:23
I don’t really wanna go chase him and knee deep snow with my bow behind
01:00:34:29 –> 01:00:35:07
This
01:00:35:07 –> 01:00:37:27
Is I thought we had an aggressive discussion about your late
01:00:39:01 –> 01:00:42:16
Plan. This is why I love these deals. You get, you get glimpse.
01:00:42:16 –> 01:00:43:07
Think he straight up lying
01:00:43:12 –> 01:00:49:07
Into his head. No, I don’t think he is. No you don’t. Devin. Devin. You don’t. He’s either serious. He’s serious. Okay. Give him another why
01:00:49:07 –> 01:00:50:06
Tells the truth. Most of the time.
01:00:52:20 –> 01:00:55:13
Most of the time Now there’s a, there’s some college stories that
01:00:55:13 –> 01:00:58:10
Bear up. No, I believe him. I really do. Yeah, you do. I believe him.
01:00:58:13 –> 01:01:05:28
Well, I had to pick a pretty hair. You guys were called marginal early rifle hunt. Like a Wasatch. Marginal from Well I’m from a trophy expectation. Why?
01:01:06:20 –> 01:01:08:11
What about what if it was midseason? Yeah.
01:01:08:27 –> 01:01:10:11
Hit him with one. Devin come up with a,
01:01:10:24 –> 01:01:12:22
The same thing. Midseason instead of early rifle,
01:01:12:25 –> 01:01:13:24
Mid midseason walk
01:01:13:24 –> 01:01:15:23
Mid-season. Why Atch out there with the spikers?
01:01:15:24 –> 01:01:18:05
With the spikers Or you’re gonna do late archery elk.
01:01:18:14 –> 01:01:22:18
Oh, okay. What would do then for Midseason Wasatch or late archery?
01:01:22:22 –> 01:01:25:23
Either way. I’m at what, 65 bucks? I mean, what’s the cost?
01:01:25:25 –> 01:01:29:24
200 0 2 2 65, 2 80 to 300. Where is it?
01:01:30:22 –> 01:01:30:25
I
01:01:30:25 –> 01:01:32:07
Just wonder how much it’s gonna cost.
01:01:32:13 –> 01:01:36:10
Who cares about the money? Wt which I’ll tell you what Wyatt, if you take the tag, we’ll buy
01:01:36:10 –> 01:01:39:09
It. We’ll pay your tag fee. Okay, let’s have that. No on the table.
01:01:39:19 –> 01:01:41:27
Epic will buy the tag. Don’t care about cost. I
01:01:41:27 –> 01:01:42:18
Don don’t have to go. Right.
01:01:42:26 –> 01:01:45:29
Why are you looking at the cost? This means nothing to you. Well,
01:01:46:00 –> 01:01:48:05
I’m just saying that that’s what I’d be out you
01:01:48:16 –> 01:01:52:27
Elk if you, it’s reduced to the cost. It really, really do mean nothing. Yeah.
01:01:53:06 –> 01:02:02:24
So answer Devin’s question. That same thing, one of those top, call it four late archery hunts in December or a Wasatch Midseason rifle.
01:02:03:12 –> 01:02:03:22
You have
01:02:03:22 –> 01:02:04:19
To go and hunt five days.
01:02:05:10 –> 01:02:06:25
I have to go hunt five days. Well,
01:02:06:25 –> 01:02:09:09
You just have to hunt. If you kill a bull the first day you kill a bull.
01:02:09:12 –> 01:02:11:13
Yeah. Which one of those would you sign up for?
01:02:11:13 –> 01:02:12:24
There’s, there’s tags on the table. Which would
01:02:13:02 –> 01:02:14:22
You grabbing if you’re own? Yeah,
01:02:15:27 –> 01:02:18:12
It’s tough. I mean, still hunting elk in October.
01:02:19:06 –> 01:02:22:15
It’s early. They’re still whist. They’re whistling. There was serious concerns.
01:02:23:19 –> 01:02:25:07
Tell me he’s frozen off. Is
01:02:25:07 –> 01:02:29:19
It dry here like this? I mean, it probably wasn’t that bad in December of this year. I mean,
01:02:29:28 –> 01:02:31:21
Man, he’s
01:02:31:21 –> 01:02:34:16
Like a guy. We, we’ll buy you heated boogie
01:02:34:16 –> 01:02:35:06
Board heater.
01:02:35:08 –> 01:02:35:22
Body suit.
01:02:35:23 –> 01:02:36:12
Can’t go either way.
01:02:36:15 –> 01:02:42:29
We’ll buy you a heater, body suit. Put me in a tree stand, put me in a blind, a ground blind. A blind. Are you, are you not a blind hunter? I,
01:02:42:29 –> 01:02:48:09
I’ll take beaver and I’ll just sit there off I what? I 70 or not I 70 Highway 20. Okay, now we
01:02:48:09 –> 01:02:48:23
Know. I hope
01:02:48:23 –> 01:02:50:01
Something comes out in the flats.
01:02:51:15 –> 01:02:52:21
Hey, I glass some up last night.
01:02:52:25 –> 01:02:59:13
I can give you at at least you got some, some points, snacks and drinks in your truck. Wow. Well, so basically the earlier rifles
01:02:59:16 –> 01:03:02:19
I find, find why, why it says he hates elk. What’s in his office?
01:03:03:19 –> 01:03:06:12
That why, that’s why it’s in my office. Where are my mule there?
01:03:07:27 –> 01:03:08:12
I don’t know. Where
01:03:08:12 –> 01:03:09:15
Are they? They’re in my living room.
01:03:10:06 –> 01:03:13:25
Why are they not there? Because you also have a moose there and a moose out out. You
01:03:13:25 –> 01:03:14:21
Look at your bull
01:03:14:26 –> 01:03:15:19
Wives over the edge. So
01:03:15:22 –> 01:03:17:15
At you look at your bull 10 to 12 hours a day.
01:03:18:00 –> 01:03:18:29
In the eyes, I
01:03:18:29 –> 01:03:20:12
Think in the eye square in the
01:03:20:12 –> 01:03:22:04
Eye. I, I’m glad I did that one time. So I don’t have
01:03:22:10 –> 01:03:28:12
To really go after. And you even paid to get it mounted regardless. Have to the tax cost you paid to get it mounted. You paid good money.
01:03:29:08 –> 01:03:31:21
Yes. Glad I did that one time.
01:03:33:05 –> 01:03:36:25
I don’t riot. Wasn’t the guy to play with you either with
01:03:37:03 –> 01:03:38:18
No, I’m kind of over
01:03:38:18 –> 01:03:48:00
That one, but, but I kind of know all early rifle on Wasatch. That would surprise me. I would, I’d take, I’d take my chances on this late percent and fail. But I know pit
01:03:48:00 –> 01:03:55:05
Bull. But there’s a lot guys, there’s, there’s guys that are killing, are hunting big bulls on Wasatch that aren’t talking kind of the ENC Chapman. It’s better than we think. It’s Chapman
01:03:55:05 –> 01:04:05:16
Behind hunting elk is is screaming bulls. That’s one time when I say elk might be cool. Yeah, I mean when you’re screaming, you’re chasing rutten bulls. I mean there’s just, that’s fun. Something cool about that. We had
01:04:05:16 –> 01:04:09:07
A blast hunting on this last air. I I like hunting elk too. Yeah. So
01:04:09:22 –> 01:04:11:16
That’s the reason I’m in on, on this year
01:04:11:26 –> 01:04:13:23
For that reason. Adam’s going to Arizona. Well,
01:04:13:23 –> 01:04:19:29
We had, last year we had cash and Josh flirt with a trifecta. They killed bulls in two states. Each of them.
01:04:20:03 –> 01:04:22:17
Yeah. But by the time you packed the second one out, you’re done.
01:04:22:29 –> 01:04:26:04
Yeah. The family experience got old. It got
01:04:26:12 –> 01:04:28:13
The fun went out. The fun was over.
01:04:28:17 –> 01:04:32:27
Yeah. By the time you get that second one in the truck, buy a big freezers, it’s ready to be back at the office. My
01:04:32:28 –> 01:04:39:01
But Pollock, yours were like 10 days apart. That’s Caley. He had an archery and a rifle. So we were a month or month or so apart. Right.
01:04:39:09 –> 01:04:42:17
My fun ended when the thought occurred to me. I might have to pack Logan off the mountain.
01:04:43:03 –> 01:04:43:12
Whoa.
01:04:43:22 –> 01:04:45:27
On You guys had some pretty good bonding.
01:04:45:27 –> 01:04:47:29
That’s about when the fun ended for me too. Yeah,
01:04:48:06 –> 01:04:48:09
Probably.
01:04:48:20 –> 01:04:51:17
And that wasn’t, it wasn’t ’cause Logan was outta shape. No,
01:04:51:17 –> 01:04:52:24
It was. Why? Because I
01:04:52:24 –> 01:04:54:06
Got him up to like 11,000 feet.
01:04:54:16 –> 01:04:57:29
I really, I’ve been doing research. I, I found ways to circumvent that from now on. Well,
01:04:58:00 –> 01:05:00:05
He’s good now. You had altitude sickness. Oh, bad.
01:05:00:05 –> 01:05:01:13
Oh yeah. Were you not here for that podcast?
01:05:01:19 –> 01:05:02:27
No, I apparently not. Oh, he was
01:05:02:27 –> 01:05:03:19
Gone. That’s right.
01:05:03:26 –> 01:05:05:24
What happened? That’s right. Did you I
01:05:05:28 –> 01:05:16:28
Got altitude sickness real bad in Colorado. Did you? Was having a hard time on his side staying alive. Yeah, alive. Probably not breathing. Yeah, it was tough. I was like wheezing when I got he down
01:05:17:05 –> 01:05:17:11
A few
01:05:17:11 –> 01:05:19:15
Times. You need a albuterol inhaler
01:05:19:18 –> 01:05:25:24
Was about passed out. Yeah. Yeah. Geez. Oh, I got some oxygen cans. I know to drink a lot of water from now on. It’s we’re good. Then he went back like two
01:05:25:24 –> 01:05:29:24
Weeks later and was just fine. On your deer. On deer hunt had some, were you not quite that high or almost?
01:05:30:05 –> 01:05:38:10
I was not quite as high, but I was past my limit on Cassius hunting. And then I just had some boost oxygen and drank a ton of water before I went down. Go. And we were good.
01:05:38:10 –> 01:05:44:18
You’re like one of those football players playing in Florida. Yeah. That they, that they they do a hard run. Yeah, exactly.
01:05:44:24 –> 01:05:46:04
Where were we when we tried that?
01:05:46:12 –> 01:05:46:18
He
01:05:46:18 –> 01:05:49:22
Calls it Boost oxygen. It was some of this canned air we had out here. Canned
01:05:49:22 –> 01:05:50:25
Air that you, your
01:05:50:25 –> 01:05:52:13
Cap keyboard. Hot duster
01:05:54:15 –> 01:05:55:00
Sportsm
01:05:55:04 –> 01:05:55:17
I bought in his
01:05:55:24 –> 01:05:57:10
Did you take the office can air? No.
01:05:57:10 –> 01:05:58:28
Did it turn it upside down and then hit it?
01:05:58:28 –> 01:05:59:05
Yep.
01:06:00:00 –> 01:06:01:27
Put the red nozzle up your nose. Never know
01:06:01:27 –> 01:06:03:16
With these young kids. Exactly. You never know.
01:06:03:22 –> 01:06:04:16
I was feeling real good.
01:06:05:19 –> 01:06:06:11
I did not know that.
01:06:06:11 –> 01:06:07:19
Caught huffing can. I got the
01:06:07:19 –> 01:06:09:06
Top so fast. It was crazy.
01:06:10:01 –> 01:06:10:12
That was,
01:06:13:10 –> 01:06:18:16
Oh well I think there’s also, well anyway, keep going. All right, let’s move on.
01:06:18:25 –> 01:06:21:03
I think what is there? What? What’s that Paul? Yeah. You think
01:06:21:06 –> 01:06:24:09
Devin Devon needs an antelope. What? Which one? On an antelope. There
01:06:24:09 –> 01:06:26:29
You go. Do would you rather take either one? What do you mean? He’ll just kill
01:06:26:29 –> 01:06:27:19
One. Yeah.
01:06:27:19 –> 01:06:30:19
Devon is kill one. He’ll take whatever steps in front of him right here. Want
01:06:30:22 –> 01:06:30:25
Em both
01:06:31:15 –> 01:06:31:28
Go home.
01:06:32:22 –> 01:06:41:09
Nobody in here is putting in for antelope. We as residents have to choose. But is there anything Jason, that stood out to you in this year’s antelope section of the magazine that you might
01:06:41:09 –> 01:06:49:11
Highlight for non-residents? No. I like, I like, which is shame. I’m like quiet. Where can I go and spend the same night in my bed? Where’s the southwest desert
01:06:50:03 –> 01:06:52:15
And where’s the best roads that that won’t spill my grain?
01:06:52:15 –> 01:06:55:27
Southwest desert’s not bad. Which is a shame I could take us one ton truck on those.
01:06:56:04 –> 01:06:57:24
I wish we could all hunt antelope more
01:06:57:24 –> 01:06:58:29
Often here. I like it. They’re
01:06:58:29 –> 01:06:59:25
Fun. They’re fun to hunt.
01:07:00:05 –> 01:07:02:16
I wanna, I want a giant of those too. Yeah, I want
01:07:02:16 –> 01:07:02:19
That.
01:07:02:26 –> 01:07:07:11
When you see like a big, big buck, it does get you a little excited. I saw last year black, A, BS,
01:07:07:11 –> 01:07:19:18
Jason Black, a BS man. We straight up Northern Nevada Black a BS. No joke. Nevada, I love Nevada for antelope. I’m going this year done everybody’s,
01:07:21:14 –> 01:07:22:21
We staff for you to say something else.
01:07:23:01 –> 01:07:23:27
An attack what
01:07:24:14 –> 01:07:25:03
We’re going this
01:07:25:03 –> 01:07:26:10
Year. Yeah. I’m gonna go an
01:07:26:12 –> 01:07:27:16
We’ve heard that before though with
01:07:27:16 –> 01:07:28:15
No, I’m going It’s true. Other
01:07:28:15 –> 01:07:30:13
Quality tags and it’s true. Yeah. They all
01:07:30:19 –> 01:07:31:13
Go by the wayside.
01:07:31:24 –> 01:07:42:27
I’ve got a, you guys are mean. Well it, it’s, but I get excited about the kill and then you gotta let some of ’em go. You know what I mean? Exactly.
01:07:42:27 –> 01:07:44:10
Some of ’em just sit in the filing cabinet.
01:07:44:20 –> 01:07:46:07
Yeah. Like all of them.
01:07:47:14 –> 01:07:50:23
Idaho you can only do so much Idaho. Them Idaho, it’s 75% that back.
01:07:51:01 –> 01:07:55:07
I’ve got an Idaho tech, I’ve got an Arizona tag. OTCs, how about there’s
01:07:55:07 –> 01:07:56:27
A couple new deer SKUs. Where,
01:07:57:10 –> 01:07:57:21
Where
01:07:57:21 –> 01:08:03:16
You gonna go on those? Yeah, let’s throw, would you rather on those? Some of ’em didn’t even make the magazine. Those Moab,
01:08:04:07 –> 01:08:13:12
Well, like the Moab and Castle Valley. Well it’s Mo Castle Valley, Adam, we talked about it. New skews create opportunities that we don’t know exist because nobody’s in the field during that timeframe. So there could be a giant pull
01:08:13:12 –> 01:08:25:11
In and it’s a general season unit gets hunted earlier. It’s not like it’s, it’s a standalone unit, but they are prescribing that for, for CWD purposes. Yeah, those, those later congregated
01:08:25:18 –> 01:09:00:10
Valleys thered, there was once upon a time they found one. I I think part of that too is you gotta look at the genetic potential of the general unit that they’re coming from and you grew up what other, you grew up on that unit. Yeah. And I remember vividly an absolute Josh Pollock’s dad’s type deer on up on Zachary’s. I, it’s unbelievable Al Mount Villa sole mounts. And it just is in my mind out by that Taylor flat country. Just it’s in my mind I will never forget it. But I don’t know, maybe it was a Colorado runaway. I don’t know. It’s not characteristic of the unit.
01:09:00:14 –> 01:09:15:28
Well those valleys are Castle Valley, Moab are, are very low end winter range, you know what I mean? Yeah. They, and they are November hunts, much like the ones on Mancuss and or the little Rockies, which I’m gonna talk about here in a minute. But see what, how much time
01:09:15:28 –> 01:09:24:18
He spent out there. The new, I think, I think the new skews given an opportunity for the first two few years and then we’re back to remedial. Some
01:09:24:18 –> 01:09:26:25
Of ’em are gonna stick. Some of ’em are, I could see being dropped
01:09:27:19 –> 01:09:43:16
Or, or even if they stick let’s the ones that do stick, I just feel like the cream will be creamed. People learn them. But the exciting part about a new skew is being the first or second, you know what I mean? The first year, second year, something like that. When it’s just like, man, there really could be something here. What is here? You know?
01:09:43:19 –> 01:10:13:25
Well in the case of all these that we’re at talking about here, none of them are non hunted areas. They’re all hunted earlier in the years on, on all their tax, on all their tags. You know, the Mancuss one on San Juan’s all getting hunted on the regular San Juan Elkridge tag. Same with those I guess LaSalle areas. Those are more migratory, low elevation winter range. But the little Rockies subunit of the Henry’s, you can hunt that with the regular Henry’s tags. I dunno why, how many people do you know, have killed bucks out there on regular Henry’s tags in your lifetime? I do not know Juan.
01:10:15:09 –> 01:10:33:04
Can you think of any? But now, but now my, I contend now that we have concerted pressure in a certain area with a certain tag, people are using points to get now they’re gonna put more emphasis than they ever have there. Yeah. Might. And it’s exciting for the first couple years. And then after that, people know what’s there. They’ve killed them, they’ve, or they
01:10:33:04 –> 01:10:33:22
Realize, I
01:10:33:22 –> 01:10:37:05
Realize I ever go by or they, there’s nothing there and don’t want go back. And it is a slight opportunity
01:10:37:09 –> 01:11:08:10
And it is a late season hunt. So you can get some, if you get some snow, why we know those heavy, heavy winters get some movement. Deer, deer can move off those southern, you know, Pinnell inhalers and drift across the highway. But I mean, one of, we had one of those by November. I almost never, I’ve one of ’em, a few mistakes I’ve, well I’m not gonna say I’ve, I’ve got a few antelope in or a few bison on the Henry’s in my life. I don’t really want to call ’em mistakes. They ended all winded. Well, but, but I remember being down there late, late, I remember calling you when you were like, what am I doing down here? It’s like
01:11:08:17 –> 01:11:09:06
I said, I don’t know,
01:11:09:08 –> 01:11:10:00
The end of December
01:11:11:13 –> 01:11:22:05
You have a four wheeler with no fenders. Exactly. You know, and then brutal. It does, it gets so cold and, and whatnot. And you wonder what you’re doing and why it would never, why it would’ve died. No. Straight up. There’s no hospital in Hanksville. But
01:11:22:05 –> 01:11:22:12
I remember
01:11:22:14 –> 01:11:24:01
Is there a, is there a medical facility?
01:11:24:13 –> 01:11:26:03
Not that I’m aware of. There might be a vet.
01:11:26:24 –> 01:11:29:06
I mean, you’re gonna go to oo. I mean, what are you gonna do?
01:11:30:07 –> 01:11:41:21
Yeah. Anyway, long story short, that year there was a lot of snow and there were deer. There were deer. Some of those years there. Deer cleared down by Teo and drifting across the road. But I mean, that almost never happens by November either. So I just, I
01:11:42:05 –> 01:11:58:10
Interesting. So I, same thing with the, I’d be cautious with the be San Juan Hunt, you know, with, they’re calling Mancuss, but it’s much more than that. You’re all it’s gonna do is hurt San Juan, the, the San Juan proper, let’s call it the San Juan proper unit, the normal hunts. Because you’re hunting those deer that come off and then they get hunted again down on the winter range where, you
01:11:58:10 –> 01:12:03:12
Know, they didn’t before they made it. Yeah, they made it at the end of October. There they had it, they made it for the year. Just
01:12:03:12 –> 01:12:16:27
Like some of the late auction bucks or something that get killed down there. Those are bucks that people knew about up on the mountain. So I think there is a chance you’re gonna bring something outta the woodwork that people didn’t know about on that. The unit’s giant. I mean, well because some obscure spring held deer that people just
01:12:16:29 –> 01:12:23:25
Know about, I guess we’ll see how many permits they give. If it’s five or something. I guess they probably can’t ruin it too bad. Like, you know, somebody’s hands
01:12:24:01 –> 01:12:37:06
And it’s like everything. It starts out with good intentions and then pretty soon they pour tags to it because it doesn’t match the ratios or whatever. And, and then there you are again. You know, so yeah. Anyway, the, the first year, first few years, the excuse come out. I think it’s exciting.
01:12:37:07 –> 01:12:38:00
Is that what you’re doing?
01:12:38:25 –> 01:12:38:28
Probably.
01:12:39:07 –> 01:12:39:21
Oh wow.
01:12:40:18 –> 01:12:40:24
I mean
01:12:40:28 –> 01:12:42:01
You heard it here first. No, on
01:12:42:01 –> 01:12:54:12
The, it’s, I’m not, I’m actually not doing it. I’m saving my points for good wet years, even though I’m excited and, and, but I am gonna do the general and unlike some people, I mean, you gotta at least have a tag in your pocket.
01:12:54:18 –> 01:13:13:15
The tricky thing with the general though, something we need to probably bring up is now they switch to where with general season, which it’s gonna change, which I guess is gonna be a hard decision for me is do you, do you know general season just a weapon or do you use your dedicated hunter because you can no longer apply for dedicated hunter and general season
01:13:14:18 –> 01:13:55:05
A weapon hunt. I think that comes into what you want for the next three years. So like you could do dedicated this year knowing it’s not that good a year, but you’ve locked in and make good on the second, third year. Right. Yeah. Or, or some or hopeful or whatever. Yeah. Right. But I think this comes into hunting science. What we were coining, we had a member coin, you know, have a buddy that says, Hey, how do you like to hunt magazine? He goes much more than hunting magazine. This is hunting science. And I think all of these variables we’re talking about the spikers, the, the droughts, the, the new SKUs, the late archeries. Would you rathers all of the, all of these things I think go into, why would we choose that? Well, there’s like 15 or 20 variables that go into making a choice.
01:13:55:12 –> 01:14:36:19
Yep. You know what I mean? And, and why it may say, well it’s okay. That’s, that’s the only variable I need to know. Or me for antelope, how close can to the house can I be so all my kids can enjoy it or my family and you know, or, or whatever. But I think generally, if you wanna make the, the most of these tags and the opportunity and the points that you have. New Mexico, we’ve talked about maybe Arizona, we’ve talked about you’re using 15, 20 points in some of these. You wanna make a good choice, an educated guess on what, why and where and when. That next awesome animal will be based off of your hunting pre preferences and your style and your ability and your time off and all of those things. So I think it’s hunting science. Yeah.
01:14:36:19 –> 01:15:10:07
You know, because I, I have enough general season points that I could draw basically any weapon or general season tag in the state because I was able to, I’ve drawn dedicated hunter, I’ve applied for both. I would get a general season point, so I have enough of those points. If I wanted to go hunt general season somewhere with a particular weapon, I could do it Yeah. This year. Or do I take that chance and say, yeah, I’m optimistic that, you know, maybe the next couple years and I’d like to have a tag in the next couple years. Do I go that route? But I, I don’t have any of those points, but take the chance of doing that. Yeah. It’s just why it’s
01:15:10:07 –> 01:15:10:17
In that position.
01:15:10:19 –> 01:15:11:09
But I think also,
01:15:11:09 –> 01:15:14:23
Right, you’ve got points for general and dedicated Yeah. Point wanna
01:15:14:23 –> 01:15:30:29
Use, but also depends on the mountain units. Let’s face it, some of these mountain units just aren’t gonna Zion pengu or whatever, you know, I guess you’d say beaver, but it’s been down quality wise. But you could just say these aren’t gonna be affected by drought as much,
01:15:31:18 –> 01:15:33:07
You know? Yeah. They aren’t usually.
01:15:33:25 –> 01:15:43:06
And so anyway, a lot of it depends on where you like to go. Like some of the stuff Devin started off with is, I like to hunt the desert. Yeah. Yeah. It’s not gonna be great. Probably, you know,
01:15:43:15 –> 01:15:48:11
It would change how you’re gonna scout for sure. Yeah. Yeah. Where you’re gonna put your time where I’ll put my time
01:15:48:26 –> 01:15:52:24
Elevation wise. Yes. Yeah. You got a lot of desert stuff. Different
01:15:52:24 –> 01:15:53:16
Parts of unit, whole
01:15:53:16 –> 01:15:54:12
Deer year round. But
01:15:54:12 –> 01:15:57:05
Those then you got summer, traditional summer range too. Yeah.
01:15:57:05 –> 01:16:29:06
Okay. Yeah. But I think I, I’m excited for the year. Yeah. What I think too, we get down, I get worried about water tables and all of those things, you know, you just get worried. Like I walk on my grass, it’s crunchy, like really hard, crunchy, like it’s dead. And now we’re starting to be like going to feed the dog alone. It’s creating this path because there’s no water to, there’s nothing. It’s, it’s just old dry, decadent grass. Have we scraped one No ounce of snow? No, no. Don’t even have the snowplow in the skid for the parking lot here at the office.
01:16:29:06 –> 01:16:30:27
Didn’t put it on my, my place. Sure.
01:16:30:29 –> 01:16:47:16
Yeah. So I, I worry about that kind of stuff, but then you find out that only, only a few states away we’re dealing with moisture levels that are off, off the charts, you know, so anyway, when you’re dealing with those water levels, only a few states away, they’re having more water than they know what to do with Texas and all these places.
01:16:47:18 –> 01:16:51:23
Well, like I said, this podcast is directed at Utah, so there does sound like a lot of,
01:16:52:14 –> 01:16:53:11
But there’s good things
01:16:53:11 –> 01:16:56:18
Happening there. Negative and all that and all that. I mean, there’s
01:16:56:18 –> 01:17:14:03
Good moisture in some weird spots. This last time when we were all up the expo, we missed it a little bit. But some of this stuff I hear down on gon a couple po spots down there, some of that out in the country and Elk Ridge, some of that stuff got two feet of snow. I mean, I know that’s not like a winter saver by any means, but that’s a sizable storm. Yeah. You know,
01:17:14:25 –> 01:17:16:24
What about even up here at Todds or
01:17:16:29 –> 01:17:17:10
Whatever. Yes.
01:17:17:10 –> 01:17:19:00
That’s what mean, I mean, how many feet were we talking about?
01:17:19:00 –> 01:17:21:12
Yeah, there’s two feet there and Cedar, nothing. Paint
01:17:21:12 –> 01:17:32:24
Monticello. How many, how much snow do we have there? I mean, a load. Yeah. So I’m, I’m, I’m excited generally, and, and I think don’t, don’t be worried about going into Mexico. There’s no points there. Go, go to Mexico. Yeah.
01:17:32:24 –> 01:17:44:19
That one doesn’t bother. And like you said, there’s a lot of, there’s a lot of truth to that. Go learn a unit. If you got lucky and, and went down there and drew a tag, go down there and learn it and you know, gain that knowledge base. Even
01:17:44:19 –> 01:17:54:04
You’re tag Adam, like you’re saying, you know, you have a tag in Arizona, you’ve got it in a, in a, a great unit down there and they manage it for, for good op good, good size bulls there. And
01:17:54:04 –> 01:17:56:13
I think, and I’ve been there so it’s like, yeah, I don’t, I mean I
01:17:56:13 –> 01:17:58:23
Don’t, it’s a no-brainer. I think you’re gonna go down there and still hunt big bulls.
01:17:59:08 –> 01:18:19:13
Even if I hunt one, yeah. I’m okay. One or two. You get a gift tag just like it New Mexico tag. They’re gifts. You draw something over there just like an Arizona random tag or even somewhere, even if you pulled a late archery tag in Utah with, for elk for two with two points. That’s a gift. It may be only a one in four gift, but it’s a gift, you know, odds wise.
01:18:20:09 –> 01:18:20:22
All righty.
01:18:20:24 –> 01:18:23:19
So take it, take it and make something of it. And
01:18:23:25 –> 01:18:47:13
Don’t be scared to apply. I mean this is fun hunting. The other thing I guess we should strap up with Adam, you know, we, we were talking like, how many more years do you have to really hunt aggressively in your life? Let’s just say 30. If you’re 30 years old, you have a certain amount of years. If you’re 40, if you’re 50, you have certain amount of years. Yeah. Are you gonna let the long term drought five eat five years of tags of not going out and enjoying being in the hills and
01:18:47:13 –> 01:19:02:16
Try No. And maybe, maybe that’s why, you know, certain individuals that I have the means to buy big deer tags and all that. Like we were talking earlier, they don’t care. I don’t, I don’t have that many great deer hunting years left. I’m just hunting deer. I’m hunting deer and it may be an off year, but I’m still gonna spend money to buy a big deer attack. Yeah.
01:19:02:16 –> 01:19:04:17
These guys are spending off the chart money. ’cause
01:19:05:00 –> 01:19:05:24
What else you gonna do?
01:19:05:24 –> 01:19:07:29
They got a certain amount of time left in their life too. Well and
01:19:08:29 –> 01:19:31:01
What else you gonna do? It’s tough in every state right now. Yeah. So you just, you can’t just say, I’m not hunting mul deer. These people love mule deer. We love mule deer and you know, we’re gonna put in for mule deer hunts. Maybe, maybe tweak our choices a little bit here and there. Or like you said, fortunately up north, you know, Idaho, Wyoming, stuff like that. Maybe that’s a place to focus or elk. Elk
01:19:31:17 –> 01:19:37:11
Stag sheep, goats, moose, elk, things like that on drought years. Right, right. Wyatt gimme sheep.
01:19:37:11 –> 01:19:44:29
You right. Give the she Wyatt. Yeah. Sheep tag. Give it to me, give you a sheep tag. Is she right? That’ll don’t make you hot ’em in September. Yeah. When you’re sweating your guts out, you don’t even have to lay
01:19:45:04 –> 01:19:46:13
Up right during the middle of,
01:19:46:16 –> 01:19:47:24
Don’t even help layer up
01:19:48:03 –> 01:19:50:07
When they elk rut, I go for sheep. Right,
01:19:50:18 –> 01:19:55:25
Right. Alright. I like it. Somebody’s, somebody’s due for something like that. We haven’t had one of those in the office.
01:19:56:12 –> 01:20:06:22
All right. Should we call it a day? Do you have anything else for your 60 seconds? Cash? Me? Yeah. No, I’m good. Good. Did this cause you to think, did this podcast cause you to think or change or No. Any other
01:20:06:22 –> 01:20:16:00
Plans? I mean, not in particular. Like I am optimistic. Yeah. Like kinda like what Josh was saying, like yeah, the deer came into this winter healthy. Yeah. So that’s gonna help but cautiously optimistic.
01:20:16:00 –> 01:20:21:15
Yeah. All right. Okay. There you go. Devin. You’re not, you’re not buying it. You’re not cautiously optimistic.
01:20:21:19 –> 01:20:22:09
Well, he’s are.
01:20:22:09 –> 01:20:27:17
I’ll tell you guys in here in about two minutes. What I Some of like some thoughts. Unguarded? No, I, no I can’t.
01:20:27:22 –> 01:20:30:09
Oh wow. Oh, not having, okay. Wow.
01:20:30:16 –> 01:20:31:11
Moving along
01:20:32:29 –> 01:20:33:23
Onto the next one.
01:20:34:02 –> 01:20:35:19
Give the people what they want. David,
01:20:36:25 –> 01:20:48:15
I’ll say this, when it comes to deer, a lot of bucks that made it because of certain SKUs and rules and opportunities get killed and that kind of sucks
01:20:49:11 –> 01:20:50:21
With the new stuff and the changes.
01:20:52:07 –> 01:21:02:28
Yes. Yeah, no, with just statewide classic, the way they’ve been doing it. And you can read into that a lot of different ways, but you know what I’m saying? Yeah.
01:21:03:02 –> 01:21:06:16
So yeah. Deer that otherwise would upon otherwise make it, don’t
01:21:06:17 –> 01:21:06:25
They
01:21:06:26 –> 01:21:15:10
Die but they deserve to live. ’cause they made it. They made it. Yeah. Yeah. No, I feel this we, I think, I think the hunting feels the same way. Even if
01:21:15:10 –> 01:21:18:01
It’s five on a unit or 10, I just get,
01:21:18:02 –> 01:21:19:07
Oh, it’s significant. You
01:21:19:07 –> 01:21:20:10
Get ’em, let ’em happens
01:21:20:21 –> 01:21:21:19
And it happens everywhere.
01:21:21:24 –> 01:21:47:29
I’ll see it on the late muzz or skews on these generals. You’re like, man, you know that deer we, we had to hunt ’em to heavy tag numbers and they made it through all the regular seasons and then we’ve got this special skew that smashed the last remaining or auction tags or whatever. So. Alright. Well anyway, on a positive note, we should all be applying, we should all be hunting Wyatt, whether it be late, early mids, elk, deer, antelope. Right, right.
01:21:48:11 –> 01:22:05:07
Yeah. Swing for the fence. I mean this year. Wyatt, one addition for non-residents, if you don’t they, they made the multi-season deer tag on the ponds available for non-residents this year. If you wanna really swing for the fence, put in for that multi-season tag on our tree muzzle loaded and rifle. They call that the divorce tag. The divorce
01:22:05:08 –> 01:22:05:15
Tag.
01:22:06:01 –> 01:22:11:05
I like it. Especially for not non-resident. You got like what? Yeah, 40, 50 days non-resident.
01:22:11:05 –> 01:22:11:17
50 days
01:22:11:26 –> 01:22:12:13
In a drought year.
01:22:13:17 –> 01:22:17:27
Okay. Okay. Alright, we’ll let’s end it. We’re good. Let’s go to work.
01:22:19:18 –> 01:23:09:04
