EP 340: Two Giant New Mexico Antelope, 2025 Winter Epic Hunts Giveaway and Epic Arms Announcements

Hey everybody, Jason Carter, Adam Bronson. We got the rest of the crew, kind of parts of them. It's a Friday. We're half-staffed, let's call it. We got Logie Bear at the freaking computer, keyboard. How are you doing, Logan? Good. John, we got you. How are you? Doing great. John's always pushing us. I don't like to be pushed, Bronson. Do you like to be pushed? No. Why is John so pushy? It's a job, man. It's a pushy. There's always a deadline this and a deadline that. Pretty soon he's writing people notes and getting mad. Speaking of deadlines, that's all Wyatt operates under, too, in License App. I mean, it's this deadline, that deadline. Wyatt, why do you have to give us deadlines, Wyatt? What do you got going on? We're just coming off the deadline. What's going on on your side of the office? Well, just a little reprieve, I guess, after Arizona deadline this last week.

It is nice. We even went out for brunch the next day, didn't we? Yeah. Like we promised, I think. We promised Wyatt maybe on a hot mic. I don't remember if we did that or not, but we did it anyway. Yeah. 11 o'clock brunch. We did all American. About 3,000 or 4,000 calories of breakfast goodness. Lots of meat, huh, Logan? Republican red breakfast. That's what we had. Logan had the pig out that had every pork breakfast meat, and he left three quarters of it on his plate. Oh, juice box doesn't have much in him. No, I guess not. I thought I'd be able to take it, but I can't. When are you going to be a man? How do you have to hold a side of ham? Adam put away like 8,000 calories in one meal. I can't keep up. No, you can't. We planned it, didn't we, Wyatt? We did. We kind of knew. We probably had a balanced breakfast that morning.

I didn't know I was supposed to fast for three days before we went there. I mean, you did leave an entire side of ham. It was unbelievable. And a sausage patty. Won't happen again. Okay, well, good. But anyway, yeah, so we've had some deadlines come and gone. We've got more coming at us. Of course, Wyatt, some of the non-essentials, let's call it Oregon bear. Bears in Utah. Bear in Utah. Bear in Oregon. Probably bear in New Mexico and Turkey. Yeah. Why have we been talking about that? Well, Nevada guide draw is coming up. How about that? That's in March. You and I went and checked out some odds on our website. On our website, you can go to Nevada, and it's the deer rifle hunts that matter on the guide draw. That's the only ones you can do on a guide draw. And you can do a drop down on our website. Go see the regular odds. Go see the guide odds. Yeah, just talk. Go see the resident odds.

Right? Go toggle back and forth. And if you are even 50-50 on whether you'd hire a guide, that might put you to the OVH. The other thing is you find out about two months earlier than the others instead of end of May. So your regular points work in the guide draw. Your guide draw, there's no such thing as guide draw points. So if you have deer points, they work here. If you apply on the guide draw, you can't apply on the regular draw for rifle deer. For anything deer, let's just say. Except for, there's always these exceptions. Yeah. Except for the Silver State. DreamTag, Silver State, PIW, and Partridge in a Petri. Okay. All right. So, but looking at the odds, some of them, Bronson, 10 times better. It was unbelievable. And some are three times better. Yeah. And if you're not so much, it's at least double. Yeah. Even in the best units, it was like triple. Yeah.

The best units in the state. So while the initial list of tags seems. Meager. Yeah. Like there's not that many tags in the guide draw. Just from the mouth. But there's also not that many tags in the regular draw. No. You know, with coming off on the heels of a draw. And they're managing for 30 to 35 bucks per hunter does, depending on the unit. He's here. We can start. Oh, there's Devin. You betcha. Devin. Devin's serving and giving in there. So what we're going to have to do is, Devin's a pretty particular guy. The mic might be a little hot or soft. The ears might be a little hot or soft. What do we got? Let's see if this is. Dude, is it perfect? Copy, copy, copy. Oh. Sound good. Is it perfect? It's perfect. I'm fine. I don't know. You beat. I mean, a little echoey. Oh, here we go. I got a little echo. Got a little trill in there that I can't get rid of.

What'd you do to this chord, Wyatt? Didn't do a thing. Exactly. A little hissing. What did I miss? Oh, just teed up. Nothing. Nothing. Just guide draw. About a guide draw alert and talking about how good the odds are in almost every single scenario. March 10th, the deadline? Yeah. March 10th deadline? Like I said, if you're even considering a guide or you're likely to hire him anyway, it makes complete sense. You can have better odds than you find out two months earlier that you drew. So, this February issue. I like it, by the way. This February issue, we got Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming sheep, moose, goat, elk, and bison. Bronson, we had to break it up for the first time in epic history. Yeah, we did. Well, and it's probably better. Those states have also moved all their deadlines, or species, sorry, in Wyoming, moose, sheep, goat, bison, moved all their deadlines to April 30th.

It used to be February 28th for moose, sheep, goat, Wyatt, and then bison was, what, 15th of March, and then April 1st. And now it's just all the 30th. All the deer and the antelope. And it's good, you know. Yeah. Yeah. It's really nice. So, they weren't quite done with their online hunt planner and identifying the units non-resist could put in for moose, sheep, and goat. So, and once they did that, we finalized it and went print. So, held off. She wanted it to be perfectly accurate. Held off from the outcome. So, here it is in February. And then in February, we've normally had Oregon. We've kicked it to April. So, with a March 15 deadline in Oregon. So, all right. May 15th. Yep. Did I say March 15th? Yeah. I'm an idiot. It's all right. May 15th. It's been May 15th since I was in diapers. And we know a lot of other stories. Oh, come on. Come on. Everybody's been in diapers.

Of course, mine were washable from what they say. Washable in the Green River. It's just what happened. Colorado River. Come on. Really? We're going to go down those roads? You teed me up. I mean, jeez. Okay. So, there's certain people that worked with my dad in the Division of Wildlife that say they like to admit that they're- They angled you over the Colorado over the raft. And we changed your divers. Well, no. No, you didn't. I don't remember that. I don't think somebody would make that up. Jesus. I don't know. They're just getting my goat. All right. So, let's move along. Also, within this February publication, John, we want to talk about the Epic Hunt giveaway. This is the last month. This is the last month that you can get in. So, it's somewhat of a short membership drive, but it's also significant.

We're giving away, dang near, $200,000 in hunts from Yukon doll sheep to Yukon moose, elk in Utah, New Mexico elk, Nevada mule deer, Utah mule deer, New Mexico antelope, and the gear package. Of course, $10,000 as a bonus. But anyway, we want to kind of go through that real quick, as this is another opportunity to do a world-class hunt. Some of these, obviously, you're not going to be able to draw a tag and a drawing like you can in Colorado for deer or something like that. And so, you're able to get a ticket in the hat for a Yukon moose, which is rare, right? It's kind of hard to find a place that you can play a raffle or a draw or some type of a membership drive situation like that. Those are a couple of studs. Bucks. Yeah, they are. Geez. They're talking New Mexico antelope right here. That's one of the hunts we're giving away. We gave it away last year, Devin.

And Logan's throwing it up on the screen. A lot of times we talk to Devin about when we're hunting something we had won ourselves. And Devin found one of these, right? Devin. Devin. Found this hunt. Devin feeds his family on a yearly basis with these things. I'm plumb out of that stuff. Plumb. Plumb out of antelope. I need another tag. I remember the other day, Devin was begging Adam for the Oryx meat. I told you I'd take just a plain old hindquarter. I mean. Shoulder. Front shoulder. Whatever. Maybe the forearms send you. Maybe just, you know, the scraps to grind it up. I did get a fish caping out the head and stuff. I'm like, I think I can come up with.

Those are some awesome bucks. Yeah, that's with old Ty Gore down there in New Mexico. So, called him up. He usually has a couple openings. They were awesome bucks. We got two spots. Well, he does if you plan in advance like what we're doing with the membership drive. And they killed a couple of incredible bucks. Gave this away last go around. And that's what we're doing this year. So, get your name in for any of these hunts by March 3rd. But I think, John, are we wanting to? Yeah. Let's call the hunt winner that just barely got off this hunt last fall. Okay. So, we're going to talk to Jared. He actually went on this hunt the most recent. The most recent. Last August. Yeah. Same hunt we're giving away now. Remember when he won, didn't we call him and be like, did we ask him if he had any friends? And he's like, yeah, I knew. I had this plan. I already have a friend. I know who's going.

I have a friend. We're going to find out the rest of the story. As Paul Harvey would say. Is he dead? Yeah. Is he? For quite some time. Man, he's such a good dude. I love the Paul Harvey. We grew up on him. I don't know who Paul Harvey is. The young guys don't know who he is. You don't know who Paul Harvey is? Oh, I know who he is. The rest of the story. The rest of the story. I was thinking of the TV show host. What's his name? Oh, KUT8? Oh, yeah. I was in a game and fish truck listening to Paul Harvey my whole growing up. Weren't you, Bronson? You were too, Bronson. Oh, yeah. AM 790, San Juan County. Yeah. I mean, still got the call. We were on. Family Feud, guys? Steve Harvey. Come on. Come on. You know what's a blast for me? Steve Harvey? You would have been in Monticello country. I was in Moab country. You might have got the same station.

You and I were listening to the same show, probably. All right. How about that? That's true. Hey, there's connections everywhere. Yep. Just right after you ran. Got diapers. Come on. I probably listened to Paul Harvey in diapers. Probably. I wore diapers until I was 10. He was one of the first kind of news slash talky radio guys, John. I mean, that was probably whoever. All you young Gen Zers, Logan, go look him up. Look up Paul Harvey right now. The most famous radio voice ever in history. Him and then Rush Limbaugh right after. Well, okay. Okay. There we go. All right. It's in black and white. Go ahead. The photos of him. Come on. I cannot believe. We were born in the early 70s. I mean, geez. Yeah. It was all color. But he probably was earlier than that. But early 70s, he's still. He's legit, man. Anyway. Well, he lived and died by it. Lived and died by his voice.

Radio was a big deal back then. I mean, look at that. President Bush putting some presidential medal of freedom or something on his neck. What is that? I mean, you don't get those handed out to everybody, Devin. World War II veteran. Okay. All right. All right. Onward and upward. Let's call Jared. So let's give Jared a call. Let's talk about some antelope. Speed goats. Devin, we might even let you take over. This is so exciting. Speed goats in the land of enchantment. I want to know who killed the non-typical. What do you mean? Look at those extras, man. They both have innards. Inner cheaters. Yeah. That one's got a couple. That's true. I didn't see the hangers there. Hey, we got official scoring here. Wyatt. Are those, if they're over an inch, are they a deduction on an antelope? No, you just don't measure them. Good. Just ignore them.

So how do you know, if you had double prongs, how do you know which one would count? The longest one? That's a tough one. You'd probably just take the longer. I wonder if they've ever made a double prong. I don't know that I've ever seen a double prong. I don't think so either. I don't think so. It's a good thing. They don't. What do you deduct on that? Everything length and all four mass measurements on an antelope? Or is it like sheep where the length, length on sheep doesn't get deducted. It does on antelope, doesn't it? Just like you're saying right there. But it would affect the mass under that prong right there if that's where the mass line was, right? A little bit. Maybe. I don't know. It's got some stuff. You mean all the bumps? Yeah. Yeah. That's when you use a cable. That's why they use a cable, Wyatt. No, you've got to use a quarter inch steel tape on the mass measurements.

Oh, geez. See, there's a caveat. There's a good reason we got Wyatt here. There's a caveat to everything. Everything. Nothing's easy, Wyatt. Nothing's easy. You only use a cable on the lengths of what? Antlers? Antlered game? Yeah, antlered game, basically. Steel tape for. Steel tape for sheep, it is true. I mean, I just thought you were being lazy to not want to cable it and do the tape. You're not calling Wyatt lazy, are you? No, I just wondered. Sometimes the cable's out and sometimes it's not. But I learned there's a reason Wyatt does it. I'm going to throw you a lifeline and get you out of this hole. Let's call Jared right now and see how they did and what they thought about this particular hunt we gave away. Here we go.

How's it going, gentlemen? Doing good. Doing great. Sorry I hit you with the FaceTime audio. I don't know. These phones are new to me. I don't know. You know, that technology in old days don't go together very well. No. And that hurts, too. That hurts. Hey, hey. I can relate to that remark because I screwed up quite a bit.

Do you know who Paul Harvey is? Oh, yes. Oh, yeah. He's one of us, Johnson. He is. He is. He is one of us. You are over 50 years old, aren't you? No, I'm not over 50, Maggie. I can't believe Paul Harvey. Dang. Okay, well, half the room in here didn't even know who he was today. Some of these kids were looking at us, and they're like 40. Are you guys mid-30s to upper 30s? They're looking at us like, what are you talking about? Paul Harvey is the most famous radio voice in North America. This is the rest of the story. That's right. Exactly. Devin thought he was the guy that hosted Family Feud. Devin's got questions. That was Steve.

Logan over here, 22 years old, is Googling the heck out of him. AI is spitting out answers. I just wanted to see if we were alive at the same time. We had a little bit of a crossover. We did. Not nine years. He died in February 28, 2009. How old was he? I don't know how old he was. Well, anyway, we're off on a terrible story. We want to talk about this antelope hunt that you went on, Jared. Just kind of get the real scoop from you and what you thought of it. And, of course, Devin over here, he loves antelope like crazy. And, anyway, we're looking at your kill photos, trying to judge one of those bucks you guys killed in on, Tim. Got a lot of stickers on him, it looks like. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I heard about Devin's love for antelope. Antelope meat.

Can't eat the horns. Yeah. All right. Yeah. So, tell us a little bit about this hunt. No, no. We had a great time, you know, with Ty over there and whatnot. But, yeah, the one hunt on y'all's, I think it was a summer draw. Yeah. Membership. And, yeah, like, you know, conversation with him and communication was awesome. You know, we went down there, drove down there. I was in Colorado. And so, my buddy that I putt picked to go with me. How did you pick him? Like, is that – Well – Seems like Devin remembered when we called. He asked if you knew a friend. I think we asked you, do you have any friends? And you were like, yeah, I've got a plan for this. It was a very clear pattern or plan, it seemed like. I actually had that one planned for one of two people when I put in for it. And it was a matter of trying to decide, well, is it going to be my best man at my wedding

or somebody else was at my wedding. And the guy that I picked is from Iowa. And I ultimately landed on that decision because it's like, you know what? He doesn't have the opportunity to come back Western hunting very often. Yeah. And him and I do a lot of coyote hunting in the past and stuff like that. So, it's like, well, that'll be a good opportunity for him because the other guy I had, it's like, you know, him and I hunt elk together and hunt deer together. So, it was kind of like, well, you can have that opportunity in time you want. The other guy from Iowa does not. So, that's how I made that decision. It wasn't the easy decision. And I may have jeopardized the friendship over that one when the other guy heard. Then you know it's not a genuine friendship. If all they want you for is antelope, it's not genuine. They use you. But, yeah, yeah. You know, I called him and let him know.

And, of course, it was the whole deal of he's like, well, I've got to ask my wife. And about five minutes later, he called me back and said, I don't care what the wife says. I'm going. Whoa. I want to go on record that I care about my wife and what she thinks.

I think it came with the stipulation that he had to take her on a cruise later in the year. Yeah. So, they went on a cruise here in January. So, yeah, that was kind of the stipulation was. But, no, called him and let him know. And he was excited. And we started all the paperwork and stuff with Ty. And then, like I said, the, you know, hunt rolled around. And we left here and drove down there on Friday and got to camp. And just an awesome setup.

You know, there in the little town in Mexico where we say that. And I had great food. And, yeah, went out first morning. A little bit of backstory. On the way down, I was, I kind of, kind of liked to joke and pull pranks. And I, when I showed up and called Ty, and I said, you know, we've been driving for four hours or six hours in New Mexico. I ain't seen an antelope one. And he was kind of taken back at first, but really warmed up. And, yeah, we went out opening morning and drew straws for who got to shoot the first one. And I let my buddy shoot. And he missed the first one at, like, 540. Good poke. Yeah. It was a good poke. Hard to range. Hard to range antelope sometimes, too. Get a good range. It's so hard. Well, and we had, it wasn't ideal conditions. Because that weekend we went down, it was set to be hot. I mean, it was 103 on Friday when we went down there. But it's a dry.

Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But, no, it was hot and windy the entire trip. But it was still good. And got out. I mean, left camp, but we were seeing antelope immediately. And I, you know, coming from Colorado and I've hunted Wyoming, Colorado for antelope. And I could tell immediately that we were going to have a good hunt just because the quality of bucks was a lot better than what I'm seeing and grew up seeing. So, it was just, we just saw a lot bigger bucks and a lot more of them. And, you know, after that first miss, we kind of drove around and there were six groups in camp total or six people in camp total between the two of us for the hunt. And then it was a guy and his best friend and the one guy's two daughters. And they'd never hunted before and never shot anything. And I think they had a little side bet between the guides of who would kill the first goat.

And I believe the first goat was dead by nine o'clock. And it was one of the girls. There you go. And this was still, like I said, everything was all on opening day. I mean, we kind of drove around and was kind of dead midday. And about three o'clock we hit, we got a phone call from another group of one of those other people. And they said, hey, he's like, we missed a buck over here. I think you guys need to take a look at it. And I went over there and saw him. And it was immediately new. I was like, that's one that I want to shoot. And we kind of trailed him for about two and a half miles. And he ended up bedding in some cholla. And we slowly walked that way. And he jumped up about 200 yards. And I let the old 7-hour PRC bark and smoked him. There you go. And then about an hour later, we were heading back to a spot.

We'd seen another antelope that was actually on the opposite side of the road we could hunt. And we're driving along. And all of a sudden, we look up. And it's like, that goat is 100 yards on the correct side of this road. Probably chasing your truck. Probably chasing your truck. There we go. And it was just a matter of it. It was so fast that I remember the guy just goes, shoot that set of a gun. And so we jump out. And my buddy Brandon jumps out and puts a gun on a tripod and shot his goat. And right there, I mean, it died 20 yards off the road. Jeez. And because it, yeah, if it had gone another 20 yards, of course, it was on the road and couldn't shoot. But on the other side of the road, it was property that we couldn't access.

Pretty awesome. So here in an hour, you both had one. Well, first day, but an hour within each other. Jeez. Yep. Yep. Within each other. And we did, earlier that day, we did find a goat that probably would have gone high 80s, maybe low 90s, that we tried to get on and never could. And he was just, he was the same way. He stuck 100 yards inside property we could, did not have access to. And we tried him for a little bit and just never could get him pressure to make a move. But ultimately, he ended up tagging five of six of us in camp on the first day. Wow. So it's your buck. They're totally two different looks to him. One's kind of that non-typical. One's really heavy at the top. Is that your, which, is your buck the one that's heavy at the top or? Mine's a buck that almost comes together and touches. Yeah. Yeah. That's a good, that's a great buck. Yeah.

He's got that classic, he's got that classic heart shape to him and he comes together and touches and almost. Heavy. Heavy. Yep. And he was a little bit, a little bit shorter. He ended up, he ended up scoring about 74. Yeah. 75. He looks, he definitely looked a lot bigger there. Yeah, he looks big. But I mean, still a great goat. And the biggest goat I've ever killed to date. Yeah. And my buddy scored 80, I want to say 80 or 81 in five eights. Jeez. That's crazy. And then one of the other guys, the last guy to tag out, he actually, he missed that. They went out and hunted that big buck that was 90 and right before dark. And he missed that buck at about 150 yards. And of course, you know, being camp, camp being what it is, we obviously gave him a razz in quite a bit and everything else when he got back. But they ended up finding out that his gun had lost an action screw. That's a problem.

There you go. Yeah. And so, so it was off. And so we went out, we didn't, we didn't go home right away. We went out Sunday and, and kind of helped do some scouting and stuff and do some looking. And, and he, they got another buck Sunday morning. And this was before they found out his gun was off and they shot again at about 500 yards and missed. And then we decided to hit camp. And that was the buck that sent you a picture of us got the really wide splayed out horns. Yeah. And he, he ended up killing that buck with the guides gun at about 495. Yeah. But, but yeah, a great hunt. I mean, the quality was awesome. They've got a buck out there that they call the forward buck. That is the first one my buddy missed. And I guess that buck has been shot at and missed 27 times. Come on. Whoa. It must be an older buck. What do they call it? Yep. The forward buck. Forward.

Oh, I'm thinking it was a forward buck. Forward truck. Always chasing the forward. Yeah. I didn't know how he had a catch either. Okay. The forward buck. Got it. Forward. Yep. He comes out. I mean, he, when you look at him from the front profile, he's, he looks wide like the other one, but he comes out almost straight. Gotcha. Parallel to his nose. Wow. And he's big. Yes. He was, he not, he'd be, he'd be in that low 80 range. So yeah. Good buck. Good size buck. Yeah. But yeah, just the, the, the quality of the hunt was amazing. You know, everybody we met at camp was awesome. The, the food, food was awesome. We had a great time when I, hands down, we'll do it again. I've already been talking with Ty about different hunts and stuff, but just had an amazing time. I mean, that was just awesome. And, you know, made my buddy's day and he was able to take home a really nice buck.

And he actually, he, he called me when you guys put your, your tickets, ticket sale up. And he's, he called me and he goes, I am putting the X amount of dollars in and every ticket is going into that animal.

That's good. That's what it's about. Well, he's got until March 3rd to get everything in there. So last day to buy it'd be March 3rd. So it's coming, coming at us pretty fast. But anyway, what an awesome hunt. Really glad you guys got to enjoy that. That's just awesome. Doesn't get better than that. You know, of course some, there's a fine line between killing early and then enjoying the hunt, the full hunt, right? Like getting the full hunt, but then you can't pass bucks like those. You're going to pass an 81 inch or 74. It looks like that. I mean, just super thick, incredible buck. I mean, just, wow. Just awesome. Super glad for you guys. How many bucks did you guys see? Like total guests. In one day. In one day, easily. We probably easily looked at 15, 20 different bucks easily in just that first day. Yeah. Wow. And we didn't even hunt all their, all their country they had access to.

It was just, we'd find little pockets and there'd be, you know, there was, there was a couple smaller bucks that we looked at and, and went on and decided that, you know, and we'd pass on them. And I, and I know when I showed up, they were kind of asking me what kind of buck I wanted. I was like, well, you know, I'm wanting the one, you know, I want to try to find an 80 inch. And as soon as I saw mine though, I was like, yeah, I don't care what size he is. I like his character. I like the way he almost comes together and almost touches like that one's dying. That one's going to take a dirt nap. Yeah. What does he have on the inside of his home? It's like cool little knobs or something. Stickers. Yeah. Yeah. He's got a few stickers. They're both really cool. Yeah. They are. They're awesome. Stickers is dead. Yeah. The only thing I will say is that choya in that country is no joke.

Oh, yeah. And those antelope are tough because that thing was covered. Well, they eat it, right? They're eating it like Milder do? Flowers and stuff. I don't know what they're eating it, but I mean, he was covered in that thing. Oh, geez. And just, and they would say, oh, yeah, those goats will go and rake it and whatnot. I mean, he had those stickers all over it when we were caping them out. I feel like I spent more time pulling thorns out of my hand than I actually did skinning. Yeah. Wow. Pretty awesome. Yeah. That's pretty awesome. How many coyotes did you guys see?

Really not that many coyotes. We saw a couple. Yeah. We did talk about trying to talk one of the, because one of the guides there was a diehard coyote hunter. We did try to talk him into taking us out on a night and doing a little calling, but we couldn't get him quite talking to that. But it was all. There are other antelope hunters hunting out there. It just does something. When you go out there and act like a dying rabbit, it just does something to the other game. It's around. Yeah. Stampede. I'm kind of like the rest of you all. It's really hard for me. It's like whenever I'm deer hunting or elk hunting, unless there's something close, and I see a coyote, it always turns into coyote hunt. I'm the same way. I'm getting it. This last year, especially, I was hunting whitetail and sitting in stands and doing this and that. These guys try to get you to kill them.

They want you to kill them, and they say it doesn't affect the deer.

Anyway, I was passing, passing, passing. Didn't want to ruin my own stand, but finally this one coyote. I was sitting there staring at me, and he's less than 100 yards. I was watching it, and it was on a doe, and the doe's watching the coyote, and I'm like, all right, I'm going to shoot this dog right in front of the doe. I freaking turned him inside out. That doe just sat there and looked. She sat there and looked and watched him. She didn't run. No. Went back to feeding. Went back to feeding. Could have killed him all week. Could have killed him all week. I was so disgusted with myself. And now with suppressors, there's not going to be a coyote that gets away from now on. I'm going to be shooting. They're going to be lead in the air. I've become one of those snobs. I'm kind of one of those that is like, if you don't have a suppressor, I'm not sure I want you hunting with me. No.

They spoil you a little bit. Makes a big deal on predator hunting for follow-up shots or a second or third dog in the bunch or whatever. Yeah. No use blowing out your ears. It was a great time. I mean, being in Iowa and stuff, with Iowa's laws, they have to have straight wall cartridges. So my buddy called me up and he's like, hey, you have a gun for me? And I was like, oh, which one do you want? Yes. Yes, I do. Yes, I do. Which one do you want? So we did all that. And we showed up on Friday and chit-chat with those guys and BS'd. And we were there. I think we were the first group there. And then they went out and shot everything. You know, make sure everybody's on and rifle and show you how to shoot off a tripod and everything else. And it was just a great time and just a world of information. And, you know, the guy that I had and Brandon and I sat and drove with.

And yeah, I would recommend that hunt to anybody. And I am going to put a few tickets in that one for this year as well. What calibers did you settle on? Just curious. So I was shooting my seven PRC. I'd actually just built it and finally got a load worked up for it. What did you bring for your Iowan buddy? He was shooting my 260 Ackley Improved. Oh, okay. So, yeah, great time. A couple of great trophy animals with the best meat on planet Earth. Right, Devin? Yeah. It's up there. It's up there. Not quite like moose, but it's up there. If you go to your wild game freezer, yeah. Yeah, it is. So. Talking to Ty, I had talked to him about the firearms and whatnot. We were discussing distances and everything else. And when he told me what some of the shots could be, I said, so we're far enough. That means I can bring my 300 Norman. He kind of balked at that one a little bit.

He goes, do you want anything left of the antelope when we're done? Hey, I shot one. My kids, actually. My kids shot one with 338 rum. And it died just the same. When it was a chest shot, it was just fine. We ate all the meat. So everything was good. Well, that's what I told him. I said, well, if we really wanted to kill them distance, I can bring out my 338 Lapua and we'll just go from there. But, yeah, he was like, he goes, that might be a little much. All right. Well, anybody got any other questions? Nope. Sounds like a fun hunt. And glad you guys were successful and got some awesome bucks. Yeah. Great pictures, too. Thanks for taking good pictures. Yep. Like I said, everybody was successful. And, you know, the second guy, the last guy that he killed, he killed late Sunday and killed that really nice buck that he has that comes out. And it comes really wide.

Devin's done it many times, guys. It's kind of fun. All right. So, Bronson, do you want to start us off? We'll just talk about these hunts a little bit. Sure.

Kind of go through what we got, what we're giving away. And to start off with, I guess, just a little bit is we're picking these hunts as if we were going ourselves. Well, exactly. And the other thing is they're all this year, which you can't buy all of these hunts for this year. We bought these a year and a half ago or two years ago in some cases. And that's what's unique. We're going to be giving these away in early March. But all of them are for 2025. So, you know, testament to us working with great outfitters, people that we know. We know we've got to buy them in advance. But we've got a couple of hunts. I guess maybe we'll kick off the first two in the Yukon. One's a doll sheep hunt in the Yukon. It's opening day, which is August 1st in the Yukon. Get there a few days early. Get into camp. Get on the mountain. Be ready to go. Tip something over that first week of August.

Longest days of the year. You know, right then and all that. We tied up that hunt. 10-day doll sheep hunt there. $40,000 hunt with, you know, North Turtle Outfitters. So, anyway, awesome hunt there. You can do a combo either whether you want to do it. Or I should say combo. Either or. Backpack hunt or a horseback style hunt, depending on what you want. So, old rams. I've had a lot of members that have hunted with these, Mack and those guys over the years. So, the other one's also a Yukon moose hunt. A little bit later in September. We picked prime dates, September 17 to 29 with a Dooling Stone Outfitters. Jason, we've both been up there. Awesome trip. You know, awesome trip. You know, huge area. Huge concession. Got a combination of horseback areas and or lake-based boat hunts on lakes. You know, big, big lakes where you get a little skip boat and a cabin and all that.

So, it's kind of got some versatility there based on who wins and what they want to do. So, those are two awesome Canadian hunts for this fall, August and September. Pretty awesome. Yep. Then we'll move in. We've got an elk hunt here in Utah. We actually purchased this landowner tag on the Southwest Desert with Dusty Trails Outfitting. Coupled that with his services out there. Southwest Desert is some of our favorite country to hunt, especially mine, I guess. And Dusty as well. I've known Dusty for well over 20 years. He knows it like the back of his hand. I'm not sure anybody knows that country better than he does. We guided Goofy, the giant 434 bull years ago in 2003. And Dusty was a part of that. And so, anyway, that's already 22 years ago. And so, kind of crazy how time flies. But anyway, landowner tag, you get to choose your season. Seven days.

In the archery course, you know, it's taken non-residents 23 plus years. Or muzzleloader 25 plus years. Just extremely tough to draw. And so, you know, you can choose an early rifle or whatever season works for you. So, he's very consistent. His clients are probably 100% kill. I hate to say it out loud. But probably 100% kill. And they're killing, let's say, 330 to 370 plus. But most guys are coming away with a 350 plus bull. So, it's just one of those opportunities that just don't come around that often. It's hard to buy a tag of that caliber, let alone draw a tag of that caliber. So, anyway, we're proud to be giving that hunt away value to like 37.5. It's crazy what hunts are going for, especially world-class hunts. So, anyway, super proud of that one. And then also a New Mexico elk with Graham's Guide Service. Just an incredible hunt down there. Southern New Mexico.

You know, south central, borders Mescalero Reservation. You'll be able to choose six days on a guided archery hunt or any of the five-day rifle or muzzleloader hunts that are available. A little bit flexible on that. And so, we'll work with the hunter as far as which tag works for you, the different tags. And then, you know, down there in the 34, 36, 37, you have some private land and whatnot. We'll have a little bit different options available to you. So, we'll work with the hunter, food, lodging, and guide service. Incredible harvest rates. Again, just one of those world-class hunts that are just overrun with game down there in south central New Mexico.

Who else? Devin, you want to talk about one? Turn it over. Which one? I don't know. Two-thirty-one in Nevada. Two-thirty-one in Nevada. One of your faves. One of my faves. I love that place. That's with Greg Krogue, Mogey on Rim Outfitters. Includes the tag. You can choose your season. Archery, rifle, or muzzle. Twenty-twenty-five. So, that's a fun one. I mean, if you look at the numbers to draw that, it's just crazy. The guide drives there are two tags. Two or three. I think there's two. On the rifle. Yeah, on the rifle anyways. Yeah. So, yeah, you get to choose your season, but also, I mean, go with him for a while and then stay and hunt as long as you want. Or hunt the next weapon or whatever you want. Go archery and stay for a muscle and rifle. Essentially August 10th through the 31st of October. Yeah. Yeah. You hunt every single day, not one day break. Yeah. Yeah.

That one would probably, that guy needs to really consider his assets and how much, if you're going to split your assets or you're going to come home to an empty house. Because you could sure spend some time out there. 80-something day season. This might be the most expensive free hunt you've ever got.

Just saying. Well, it's a seven-day guided hunt, too. We should add that in. That is. Fully guided. If you want to hunt 85 days, I think that's how many days are in the season. Just saying. Pretty awesome. Probably ought to get your house in order before you leave if you're going to spend too much time out there. Pretty awesome. One of those hunts that we would take ourselves. Of course, the photo, I think that deer went like 215 or something. One of those, kind of a crazy year out there, that particular year. And it was a buck they actually didn't really even know about. And just glassed him up and had him dead in a matter of hours. All right. Pretty awesome. Let's see. Wyatt, you're up. Yeah. So this next one is going to be a five-day hunt here in Utah with bucks and bulls outfitters. It's a pretty cool, unique opportunity because you get to start September 1 with a rifle.

So velvet mule deer with a rifle is pretty uncommon in the west. Most that's reserved for archery hunters there. Great private land hunt. Great opportunity for great deer. Just awesome. Yeah. And it's a tough spot to get. The rest of these are a super tough spot to get. We have to book this one far in advance to keep it going. Keep our foot in the door. Yeah. And what's crazy about these kind of hunts, like we talked about, is just how tough is it, Wyatt, to like, if you want to, you know, grab a tag or a hunt for a 180-plus deer, how hard is that nowadays? Dang near impossible. I mean, there's just. Devin? I mean, it's tough. How many requests you get those? I have no words. Devin, all I want is a 180, Devin. It is very hard. Get in line. Get in line, right? Yeah. These guys had, from what they told me, there's a couple they left over, too, from last year

that made it that they're excited about. So they're going to have a good year. It is. It's exciting. These are fun hunts. This is just awesome. You know, we could line up hunt winners from all of these hunts, and we should have done that a little bit better. We're terrible prep, Bronson. You and I, like, we drag our feet to do the podcast, and we get in here, and what you see is just whatever we happen to drum up, you know, at that moment. So anyway, but we have hunt winners that have had great hunts. We had a hunt winner on this particular hunt that just rant and rave, just could not say thanks enough. Greg Kroak, 231. Guy didn't even kill a buck and was just over the moon, ecstatic. Had another guy last year kill a buck out there in 231, you know, on one of our giveaways, different outfitter, but just have great experiences, you know.

And so anyway, each one of these hunts have just yielded great results. What do we got next? Oh, antelope. We haven't talked about that, Devin. Devin, this is only fitting for you. Should we just do a quick old run through? That's the hunt we just talked about with those guys. It's a three-day hunt, private land with Ty Gore down there. He's got a bunch of big, big ranches. I mean, all of them are solid. But, yeah, that's for two people. It's valued at $9,000, and that'd be August of 2025. Seems like if you knew where there was a 90-incher, you'd do anything to go. Yeah. I mean, rumor has it there's some leftover carryover there. Jeez. It's pretty awesome. Boy, I'm writing down stuff. Yeah. I'm saying, let's go. Bronson takes the notes. Well, yeah, we're looking at 2027, I guess. We come in the office this morning, first thing Adam does. Hey, so what's our plans? Let's make some plans.

I love it. Every day we're making new plans. I want to put these tags in our name right now. I want to move from the plan stage. I'm trying to get Wyatt to commit. Well, you guys committed together in Idaho. You guys got plans there. You guys are here. Oh, well, we got some. General tags. Okay, so that's a very backup plan. It's a very, very. Well, you got a plan. Worst case scenario. I mean, I forget about that plan pretty regularly. I get so excited about the tag grab. Trust me. We don't. And then I grab the tag, and then I'm kind of over it after that. It's the kill is getting the tag. It is. And it's not even a draw. You bought it. By July. I have so much fun getting the tag. Jason has an accordion folder with all of his tags. Literally. Literally. Organize them. So I have an Arizona OTC. Why? Just because other people want it. That's why I think I want it.

And now I have something that you can't get that somebody else might want. It's kind of exciting, right? Now you got an eye hole. And then I do a little Boone and Crockett search, and here's a freaking giant on an OTC archery. And then I hit my buddy, and he goes, oh, yeah, that was right behind my house. And by the way, there's more of them. What? About the quarter filled on the 1st of January. Yeah. Yeah. I'm not doing anything in January. Right? We don't do much here at the office in January. This is perfect. All right. So then we've got the Epic Gear Package. Bronson, you and I work this over a bunch, and John gives us the okay to give away the farm. Pretty much. Well, yeah. And we start off by giving away a fierce carbon rage rifle. You know, they're obviously been great partners of ours here. They're the sponsor of this podcast. Awesome glass there. And then one of our tripod, ultra tripod head, tripod combos. How about that? The absolute best tripod on planet Earth. Yep. So that's a lot of stuff. You pretty much got, get a rifle set up, vinyl spotter, tripod, bow, you know, everything you're going to need. Bronson, it seems like we added this up to like $15,500. I was just trying to add it up in my head. It's got to be at least that. That's a $4,000 scope with the eyepiece, a $3,000-something-dollar urban arm. Finals. Rifle. Rifle. Bow. Pretty awesome. Bow's are cheap, aren't they? Geez. That's a stand-ish. This equipment, when you go first class, you're going to pay for it. And it's awesome. I'm giving it away here in this membership drive. Get your tickets in there for March, by March 3rd. I'd get them in right now. Of course, Wyatt, are you, sometimes I don't understand how you apply for things.

You're at the bottom of the pile or the top of the pile? It just depends on the day. I kind of switch it up. It drives me crazy. Keep everybody guessing. So we're going to put Wyatt on the spot. He didn't know this. Really? Yeah. I want to hear a little more about his plans. Wyatt, you have a knack for choosing the best places to go on the right years. You know what I mean? I've got lucky. I have to. I will say that. He's scared of where this is going. He knows the question. Where are you going this year? Where are you going and what are your plans? We're not going to go there. I don't have any plans. I'm just saying. You've got, if you, if you could get something that could trump your Idaho general tag and make you maybe put that on the way back burner, what would that be? What would make you trump Idaho general? He told me this morning it's one percenters. I'm like, what do you mean?

Really? One percenters. Explain the one percenter. Yeah. That's not even exciting. I'm just going to throw my name in the hat, see what comes up, I guess. It's kind of my strategy for this year. I mean. And if you beat the odds of one percent, then that trumps these OTCs. That's what I'm going with. But two plus percent, no. We're doing the OTCs. Staying with the OTCs. Jeez. That's a hard, that's hard to get excited about check and draw results doing it that way. But kind of like Jason, the kill, getting the drone. I don't know why I like the kill. You do too. I do too. I'm getting a little less, a little bit less satisfied by that. But I do get sucked into that. Especially in states that don't have points or stuff like that. New Mexico or, I mean, I got a deer tag there. You did. I mean, didn't even go. Last year. I went? No, I didn't. Oh. But I had one too. You did. You did. I forgot.

You had the best coos deer tag on planet Earth. No, I did not. I would have been there. Trust me. Trust me. It was one of those you might get lucky. It also overlapped Colorado and I ultimately decided I'm going to go hunt mule there. But it gave you something to fall back on. It is. In the event the world came crashing down and there was no other tag. It's a quasi over-the-counter tag, even though it's not. What I like about New Mexico, and we're covering New Mexico in this particular magazine, but what I like is we've killed some great animals, but in weird skews. Weird units, right? And then we've also eight tags, right, Devin? And some weird skews. Haven't we done that? It can happen, yeah. If you end up going at all. So we've had some good hunts. We went last year. Devin and I went down there, hunted deer a little bit, got our butts kicked.

It was a semi-off year in the particular area we were at, and maybe just off in general. And we're also always trying to make something great out of something that's average. It's the kind of state you feel like it could happen almost anywhere. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. And you're never giving up points and waiting periods and any of that. Just go give her heck and if you didn't like it, do it something different next year. We learned a lot. And every time I go down, I don't know, Brunson, you like to tease me about the deer tags I've had in Mexico. But Mexico's one of those places that sucks you in. And pretty soon you find yourself in Unit 9 or 14 or some weird place that isn't known for any deer at all. They kill some weird big bucks and weird places scattered all across New Mexico. Yeah. That's for sure.

Then there's a giant killed in some of these units, a unit that you're like, oh yeah, I've seen giants there before, but I never decided to, I never wanted to go there because I've seen a big buck there. Makes no sense at all, I guess is my point. Yeah. Wow. Anyway, so that's why I like to talk to Wyatt because he has good plans and he makes the right plans on the right years. If Wyatt tells you to go somewhere, you should listen. You should listen every time. If he gives you a green light, run. I want to just ask him what my green light is for the year. Just ask him. In fact, I might just let you apply me in a state or two. Oh, promise? Would you do that? For the usernames and passwords. Yeah. Get in those good things. You've got to go to Oregon. Oregon is not in a drought. We'll email you some forms. How about you write it on a sticky note and I'll take it under advisement?

Exactly. Because I don't know what carte blanche on my credit card. So there's so many options in New Mexico that we can't even cover them all in print, in the printed magazine. But on our website, you can go find any and every single hunt they offer as far as the draw hunts. And so when you go on there, you can go look and just look at your odds, whether it be the resident odds, the guided odds, which would include some residents, I guess, if they want to do it that way. It's not the smartest way to do it for a resident. But anyway, the guided odds and then the non-resident, just the regular, let's call it the DIY non-resident. But he can choose to go guide it after he gets that tag. But you can go, you know, compare the odds and make a decision based off of that. And then you've got to just really be careful of the allocation, the total tag allocation.

And there may only be a non-resident tag that is issued in the guide drawn. And there's no tag available in the regular non-guided non-resident drawn. So just be aware of that. We cover that in the Epic Outdoors publication. And it's just kind of a little tip and trick that most guys know that have applied in the past. But it's something to take into consideration. Anything and everything's good in New Mexico. It's fun. I like going to New Mexico. Although, Bronson, you traveled down there to South Central New Mexico. It's no joke of a jaunt. Oh, yeah. 13-hour down. We're like an hour from Texas border down there. Yeah. Roughly. Yeah. So it's a poke. But it's awesome. It's kind of a wild country. Lots to do down there. Lots to do. And I've got to say, the roads going through Arizona are the worst ever. Well, especially if you go across the net. What is up with I-40?

You guys from Flagstaff to Albuquerque? I mean, jeez. Have you noticed the semi-traffic? It's a major, major vein. I-15 is. Yeah. It is. But you talk about the roads, you feel like you're in front of a sailboat on the ocean? Yeah. Well, just the interstate. I-40. But it's bumper to bumper. Wavy. It's true. But it's bumper to bumper. I think there's just so much, so much traffic that it just wears a road out. I-15 doesn't get worn out like that, and it's a pretty busy freeway. Even over by St. John's, where there's not a lot of traffic, there were some bad, bad roads. Like, the speakers fell out of the ceilings of my camp trailer. It was so bumpy. Okay. I just want to ask you a question, Bronson. Me? Does it surprise you that John had speakers fall out of the ceiling of his camp trailer?

I will say, camp trailers are not built incredibly strong. They're not built like an airstream. You get them on a washboard road, you're going to find lots of screws in the floor of your trailer when you get there. I just love the stories about John and camp trailers. John, did you or did you not leave a camp trailer over the entire winter in the state of Colorado? I did one year. I mean, I just love these stories. I paid to keep it at a campground. But, yeah, I left it. My transmission went out. I couldn't go home. Oh, that was on a truck I sold you. Okay. We're going to end this podcast here. No. Let's get it in on a high note. We ordered a bunch of peep sights, front globe sights, the hunter precision type, so you

can choose your reticle. You're still going to be under probably 900 bucks with an LRX, MRX, and the sights. And the sights. And the Northwestern kit or whatever. So, we're going to have that at the expo, as well as a one power Leupold mounted on there. You can kind of look at that. Of course, there's plenty of you out there. Don't need to see that. You've got one. Whatever. That's great. You've got a plan. But if you need something, come by and visit us. We're going to have it on an epic gun clamp on the tripod. You can check it out. Also, we're going to have a fierce firearm on a tripod, right? I believe. Why not? If you're bringing your personal gun, then, yes, we will have one there. Bronson, I'm thinking we... Well, I mean, I ordered one for me. Because I thought this was for you. It is. It is. But now it's for anybody that might want to buy that. But because I'm so excited about it, I think there's other people going to be excited about it. And if you're excited about it, we'll get you one.

I was just waiting for him on the phone to say, oh, yeah, you need a 360 Buckmaster. I was going to say it. And for some reason, I missed it. And I was like, oh, I'm talking to his buddy. I should have been talking to his buddy. Anyway, but I want to know more about these straight wall cartridges because I was famous for it. And Bronson, you know that. You went out there. Well, they do. And you have multiple follow-up shops. I took a muzzleloader when I went there. Of course, you can use a scope, magnified scope and all that. And that's a pretty dang effective gun. But it's a single shot out there using a straight wall. You got a magazine with whatever, three or four, you know, underneath it. So you need a follow-up shot. You're going to want something like that. But we got some of these weird hams hunts throughout Utah or even some of these, I guess, yeah, hams or restricted weapons,

general season hunts in three or four units in the state. One that Logan might be familiar with. One that others in this room, Jason, might be familiar with. I'm drawing down notes of stuff I got to buy. Exactly. You got to list, you know, a mile long. But anyway. I mean, we're going to. The restricted weapons is no joke. People are having to figure out a rifle to have open sights. Go find a rifle with open sights. So we've got. We went to a shop show. And that was one thing we did. And it's a lot tougher than you think to go out there. It's surprising. Firearm manufacturers and try to find something that's already drilled and tapped. It doesn't even just have them on there. All you need is one that's just tapped for them. That's hard. Yeah. So anybody that needs one, you probably ought to call us. Or you're welcome to. Hey, I love this stuff. I know. I love it. What do you call that? That trigger. It's kind of an Accu trigger, but that's not a savage. That is counterintuitive. It's the same thing. A pre-trigger trigger to make you more accurate. That doesn't make sense. And you can't get them under four pounds. Yeah. So anyway, Devin. Did some projects. Yeah, we did. Devin did it to his last week or 10 days ago. And I quickly ordered a couple from me once we had the right. And now, guess what? We even convinced Wyatt. You're so quiet right now, but you've got to talk about this. Yeah. We convinced Wyatt to get a whole new setup. Yeah. Got a 22-50, didn't you? Yeah, I got a 22-50. Yeah. We got projects. Sitting in my office right now. Again, I paved the way.

I love it when people spend money after I do because it validates my own expenditures. I know. You know what I mean? You don't want to do everything alone. If I'm buying a CVA, dude, it's a 10-round mag or whatever it is. It's no joke. You get a pair of coyotes, which they're now pairing up. Pretty soon, they're going to be breeding. Pretty soon, they're going to be in the den. These are things that Wyatt and I are now prepared for. Right? Ready. Multiple shots. Get there. I mean, so Jim Borden, he is no joke. The guy, the guy. He wants it to the nearest tenth of an inch pound. No, it's not even that. I asked him one day. I said, you know, because I'm an idiot kid. This is 20 years ago. And I'm like, Jim. And he does have incredible rifles. But anyway, and I got a couple of them. 300 Roman and a 338 Roman. Anyway, I was like, Jim, what do you torque these down to? If I take the stock off, what would I torque it down to? He goes, you don't torque my rifles.

You stop when it stops. It's just square. They're perfect. You know, I'm like, I don't know what he means by that. You know, and what he means is everything about it is true, perfect. And it clicks into place. When it's tight, you know it. And it just, it's kind of like a snap. It just snaps. But when that happened, when that got to that point, you think with your torque. Ranch, it would be 40 foot pounds. 20, 21 and a half or whatever. Whatever it did that. There is a number to that. A number where you would be safe that this isn't going to back out. That's what I want to know because I don't know what that feels like. Somewhere between 30 inch pounds and 52 inch pounds. That's right. But I don't know what that number feels like. He does because he's felt thousands. That's right. Right? Like, it's his area of expertise. I can tell you this.

My action screws were way more loose than yours were for the factory. Yeah. Really? Yeah. Okay. But it doesn't matter. They weren't that tight at all. I mean, it's Kyle. Well, whatever. Yours were looser? Yeah. Okay. Well, they're all the same now. Yeah. We did it. We didn't tell they were tight. What did you tighten them to? Just tight. Called 30, 30, 40. It's called snug.
