EP 356: Hunting Desert Sheep in Sonora Mexico and an Epic Trail Cam Picture Contest

So anyway, what do we got going? I guess we're right in the middle of June. Feels like July. Wyatt says July is already over. Why are you such a pessimist about July? Wyatt said the summer's over. It just seems like July, there's always so many events. I mean, it's just one weekend or the next week. You don't own yourself, Wyatt. Wait until you get to be our age. You do not own yourself. You're just being told what to do. Remember when you were young, you could do whatever you wanted. July seemed like it was forever, man. Summer.

July was always spent in Nevada or Utah looking at bulls. Yeah, looking at bulls. Big bulls. You're the architect of every day. You did what you wanted. You roamed. Tell me, who here does what they want every day? Logan. Logan. Enjoy it. Every day. And he's begging for somebody to boss him around. I don't know about begging.

Pleading. Actively searching. Yeah. All right. So what do we got going on here, guys? Bronson, when we got going, we were kind of talking about maybe building a trail cam contest possibly. Maybe we should build that real quick. What do you think? Well, on the fly, I guess. Yeah, see where this goes. Build it on the fly. What's the parameters? We had old Sherrod and Chamberlain, good friend of ours here at Epic Outdoors, say, hey, why don't you come up with some kind of contest? I think he wins fairly regular like the Redmond contest. He probably already has a really good pitcher. He just needs to enter. And I think he really wanted to tell us what the price should be. But I didn't ask him. I didn't ask him. What are you going to give, Jason? What are we going to give as a company? What are you guys saying? I mean, we should do a tripod, right? Or maybe. Or trail cameras.

Obviously, people use them. Trail cams? Brand new trail cameras to replace the ones you're going to steal. They're going to get lost between them. You're going to steal. No. That you're going to get stolen. That's what I meant to say. All right. Because everybody's going to need a few freshies going into 2026. You know what might win the contest? So we asked him, like, how should we build this? What do you want it to look like? Anyway, what might win is somebody getting a picture of a thief. Bucks, bulls, rams, and trunks. Oh, I like that. I think you could even have some categories, you know? Yeah. Okay, so let's build it. Strange things. There's a movie called. So we're going to have a strange things contest. So like alien Sasquatches. No naked people. Don't submit naked people. No powder river troughs with people in them. We don't want to see it. Okay. No dudes. No dudes.

Taking a link. I don't care. Yeah. I don't care what gender they are. Those are getting a stranger things category. Stranger things. Stranger. Okay. Got it. But keep it G and PG. A little more complicated, he says. Could be Western Big Game, deer and elk together. You know, monthly prize, yearly grand prize. Yada yada. So, I don't know. There's a couple ideas. Tough part about limiting it to just this year. I mean, who wants to give up their trail camera photos for this year already? Who wants to see it? Who wants to win? Who wants to win? Shanks with 14 eye guards. That guy's going to win. I think we should say we could add 20, 24. Really? I don't know. I'd like to see some. I don't want to see. I'm sick of seeing just shanks right now. I want to see a built deer or a built buck. Seems like you did some scouting today and the bulls were pretty well built. No, I didn't see crap. Pretty well built. I don't want to see stubs. I don't want to see stubs. I just want to see something that's built. I would say the strange things can be any time. I don't know.

I mean, you lived the last 20 years. I've got a coyote with a chicken in its mouth. Yeah, I want to see that. A live rooster. Yeah, I want to see that. Okay, I'll submit it. But I can't win. We can't win. Anybody here at the table can't win cash. Come on. I've got some cool stuff. I've submitted my strange room before. But, yeah, we should put some governance on there. Two years. Do that one 24 or 25. What if you do the stranger things one from 2020 to 2025? Do you got one from 2020 cash? No. No, just to give a window so you actually see some cool stuff. Otherwise, I might get like five submissions. We'll see them aliens or whatever. Spaceships.

We got the overall winner. And then we got each category. But I'm just thinking out loud. I'm just saying. Jason, sometimes you, I, we all walk in front of somebody's camera. You're not the one that steals it. But they got your picture. And they now want to shame you. Because this guy was on my camera. And when I went back, it was gone.

And you're not the one that took it. How do you prove that that guy actually was a thief? Well, if they have, if they have a grinder in their hand. Okay. And that camera was on. And then the camera was off. And the guy walks away with the grinder. Okay. It better be good proof. It's on video. Because otherwise, I don't want to shame somebody. Because, you know, some of these waters have 10 cameras out there. And you're getting, we all get on cameras. You're setting up your own camera, and they're assuming it's their buddy's camera. Because he had the redlock. Exactly. And it turns out, your camera's stolen and theirs. So I just, I want to be careful not shaming somebody that has just got, walked by a camera. If we need to shame somebody, send them in. We'll do it. And that's, hey, that's prize enough. That's good enough. We got six categories, guys.

We got an overall, predator, variety pack, elk, deer, and strange things.

Josh, you can vote the strange things. Of course. That goes without saying. We didn't even need to ask if it was going to judge that way. Strange son of a gun right there.

This should not be a surprise to anyone in this room. I just find it interesting how this rifle ended up at your house. In the name of your wife. No. We all know this. No. There's two of them. There's a his and hers. His and hers. That's right. I thought you said you. All right. One had a length of pull modification. Great. One of them we had to get. From the Viking to Mrs. Viking. It was definitely a different gun. The un-Viking. Nobody. All right. Nobody can compete with this guy. You got two of them now. I do. You're looking for scopes now. I own one and she owns one. They're not both in my name or her name. They're separate names. Separate. And I actually did run the background track. Throw them under the bed. Yeah. Might. What did you get? What calibers did you get? We got hers. She actually has an elk tag this year. So we need something a little larger caliber, but not too large.

What did you settle on? A 7 PRC. Okay. I like it. That's what hers is. So we got hers. Just to link the pull on her stock. Yeah. Fits her like a glove. That's a do-all. You can kill about anything with that. Yeah, that's kind of what we figured. It's just a good caliber to shoot some stuff. Why is it a brown bear with a 7? A 7. Remington. A millimeter. Yeah. Yeah, so it's good. So we got that one. I got that one in the distressed gray color. Just so that there's no confusion. Didn't you guys kill Moose with the 7 too? Yeah. Yeah, it's legit. What did you get for yours and what intended purpose this year? It was a distressed tan color. So it would be a little bit distinguished from hers. And I may need to kill a sheep, I suppose. Yeah. What caliber? Once in a lifetime. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We ought to touch on these aren't just your normal rifles. These are chassis rifles with folding stocks.

I mean, they're pretty cool. Yeah. Yeah. Really lightweight too. That's the thing that's nice about them. I'm going to be packing them and stuff. They shoot like crazy. At least one I've got shoots like crazy. It's a good option for youth and ladies too because they cut the stock down in what? It was like a week. Yeah. It showed up in like a week and a half. Essentially, I mean, I don't build the guns. I don't understand it. But essentially, there's kind of a tube, I guess, that goes into the back of that, into that stock where it folds. And they can adjust the length of pull on that by just doing it. It sounded like it was fairly simple because we were trying to decide, you know, getting her one of the like mini rogues. But I didn't love the calibers that some of those come in because they have to come in short action. And I really liked the 7PRC.

And so we wanted something a little bigger, but not as big as a 300.

So, yeah, we went with the 7PRC and they did that. And so it was pretty awesome. We actually had them both out last night. Everything's good. You mean at the house? Nice. They took it together. Both out. Yeah, laid out there. Wow. Did you shoot them? No. No. Just ran the bolt a little bit? Yeah, just ran the bolt. She told me her bolt feels better than mine. Okay. Yeah. Don't let her think otherwise. Yeah. You're going to have problems. Exactly. You say you're right. You're right. She got a zinger. So, yeah, we own two of them. They're pretty awesome. I'm excited to get them scoped up and get them shot. Are you going to put suppressors on them? Yeah. Those should be here today. Well, that's pretty nice. That folding stock is nice because if you put a suppressor on it, it's not, you know, 16-foot long rifle. Yeah. We got 20-inch barrels on both of them as well.

So, even if you're going to throw, put like a 5.5-inch suppressor on them, so it's still not going to be a big, huge, long barrel either. Yeah. I like it. We got some other guns here, DJ. DJ's gun shop we've kind of put together here. Do you guys want to take some time to talk about what we got ready? D? J? J? Jay's going to let D talk about DJ's guns that we put together. We put them together. I can't believe nobody has taken that, either one of them. 6.5 and a 7. If I didn't already have five 6.5s. I all but took the 6.5. I would buy it. It's a shooting sucker. They both are. Oh, man. We have video of it. But, yeah, they're dialed, zeroed, set up, ready to go. Cherry. Five boxes of ammo. If you want. You don't have to do the ammo. Rages, Devin? Don't buy it. It don't matter. You don't have to. Are they a fierce Rages? Rage? A twisted Rage and a 7 PRC and then a, is it a CT? CT Rage.

CT Rage and a 6.5 PRC. Yeah. And one of them has a Z5i. Z5i. A swirl. I don't remember which one. On the 6.5. Yep. So you guys took these guns, mounted the scopes on them, went out, zeroed them, chronographed them. Chronographed. Dope. Got a dope. Yeah. Chronode everything. Shot them out to 840. I believe that's, there's probably a piece of paper in there signed by one or both of you. Probably both. D and J. A hat, maybe. D.J.'s gun service. Quality checked by D.J. But you got the net feet per second. I'm just saying, if I'm putting a gun together, D's checking it out. If D's putting it together, I'm inserting myself as part of the process. Yeah. That's right. But he doesn't need it. These aren't just four-sided is what I mean. No. You've chrono'd them, you've threw them in your range finder, you have all that stuff in there for both of them.

We just threw probably 15, 18 rounds through each one. Yeah. By the time start to finish, I mean, they're cherry new guns. Yeah. Do them start to finish, they're going to, out the door, you can kill something. They're ready to hunt kill right now. Yeah. It's like D said. He's like, you'd kill something right now. You hunt with this right now. I would hunt with it tomorrow. Yeah. Both of them. Yeah. They're going to work. That's awesome. So anyway, lots of options here at Epic Outdoors. All right. Let's call Bob McCormick. So Bob, let's maybe set the stage there, Bronson. You've been down there. Yeah. We've had this ranch opportunity for a lot of our Epic Outdoors clients that are looking for desert sheep hunts that are free range. You know, real, real desert sheep hunts that, you know, can't draw a tag in the lower 48 states, need a desert.

I've had a lot of guys go down there with Roberto. So I've been down there myself. Great place. I can assure you there's no captive fence of any kind for sheep, deer, anything. There's no fences, no captive animals at all. It's legit. Great place. Great combinations. He owns it all himself. It's, you know, been in his family. So a lot of sheep. And, yeah, Bob, actually last year, I think he got talking to Jason first, and Jason kind of helped him through the booking process. He's getting older. I don't know how old he is. 80-something, Jason. Mid-80s. I don't want to ask him out loud, but I think it's like 85. Yeah, but, I mean, the point is he needs a desert sheep. He needs one he's not going to draw on. It's, you know, he probably needed one 10 years ago, but he finally decided to do it. And he learned how to use WhatsApp because that's what you do from the U.S. to Mexico.

And Roberto's great at that. And, I mean, between the group texting on a very aggressive, regular basis, we got him down there, and he killed a great ram. Yeah. Absolutely. And part of the reason we want to talk about this is this is the exact hunt we're giving away in our membership drive right now for next February. And he killed this ram in February. He killed it last February, and we're giving a hunt for this next February. I'm going to go down there with him for the winter just to have fun, fun in the hopeful sun. It'd be awesome. And, yeah, so this is the very hunt we're giving away. Yeah. And I was going to say, Ty speaks Spanish. No, we'll take him. You don't even need it. Like, Roberto speaks English. Killed the great ram. Okay.

Good morning. Bob, you there? I am. Jason Carter here with the Epic Outdoors podcast. Of course, we've got the whole crew sitting here. How's it going, Bob? I'm doing good. Well, we just wanted to kind of get the story from your hunt. You went on a desert sheep hunt there with Roberto through Epic Outdoors. And, anyway, had a great experience. And this is the exact hunt that we're giving away here next week. So, on June 23rd, we kind of close up the Epic Hunt giveaway. And this is, you know, one of the main prizes. And so, anyway, just kind of wanted to hear from your perspective how this hunt went down. Well, it was, I've been on some fantastic sheep hunts, but that was, the one with Roberto was super great. It gets a five-star rating. That's great. Well, and remind me, did you take, was it your son or grandson down there, or both? I can't remember who you took with you.

I took my grandson. I lost my son a long time ago. So, he used to be my partner. But, anyway, I lost him. So, now I've, this is my, actually my step-grandson. And, but I love him dearly. And he and I are best friends. Well, that's awesome. Well, I'm sure he enjoyed it, too. So, yeah, tell us just a little bit about, I mean, you fly into Hermosillo and head to the ranch. Just kind of take it, kind of set, you know, for people that may be interested. We can say it, you know, all we want, that this is legit and a great place and all that. But we thought we'd get your perspective on from the time he got there and got set up at the ranch house. And then, you know, take us hunting a little bit. How'd it go? Yeah, let's hear it. Well, we, in order so we wouldn't be late going through customs, we went a day early and spent the night in Phoenix.

And got to the airport three hours early and cleared customs. So, we had plenty of time. And then we got to Hermosillo. And even though Roberto had all the paperwork for my permit to get into my rifle into Mexico, they couldn't find the papers. And so, we had a little hang-up. And they kept wanting me to call Roberto. And Roberto only texted. And he was just across through a glass door. Through the wall. He's like, let's call it 73 yards. Yeah. It's just right there. Whatever. And he didn't answer his phone. And so, anyway, finally, the supervisor of the security down there, he had a whole package of papers. And, of course, mine was in there. He just couldn't find it at first. There you go. Anyway, and I won't bribe nobody. Yeah. Well, they found it. He found her. And then we went through. And Roberto and I can't remember the cook was with him.

And, boy, it was instant, you know, greetings. And we had baseball hats and new baseball hats with Roberto's logo on them and just instantaneously, you know. And so, we were off and running. And it's two hours driving out to the ranch. And so, we finally got to the gate. You get to the ranch and it's just absolutely wonderful place, you know, nice and clean. And they even take lawn rakes and rake the sand, I think, every day in case there's something on there. Yeah. That they take really good care of. Sounds like a golf course. Yeah. Checking the tracks. And Grayson's brother looked us up via satellite. He said, you guys got five swimming pools. And what he was seeing is their water storage for the cattle.

Yeah. Or you could take a swim if you want. Hey, we've done it. Who hasn't been in a trough before out in Nevada? Yeah. Right. And anyway, they were great big concrete things, you know, full of water. And from the satellite, they look like swimming pools. Anyway, he's got like 48,000 acres of ground. And this mountains thing where the sheep are are on his property. So, he has a very, very good operation. And we saw sheep every day. Wow. And it just, you know, wasn't the right one. Or the wind was blowing wrong. Or, you know, something was going on. And so, anyway, we were, you know, continually entertained. And my grandson got to where he could find them just as good as the guides. But he found one that nobody ever found except he and I saw it. And, but it was like 1,000 plus yards out there or something. And we had, we bought a phone scope before we left.

And so, we put them on my 15 by 56 Leicas. And I got some really good phone scope pictures at a long range of sheep moving around over on the hillside. So, it was pretty, it's pretty cool. I can look at those anytime I want. Anyway, on the third day, they found one in the morning. And so, the ranch hands did. And they become spotters during hunting season. And so, there's five of them. And so, anyway, we went down to where they were located and found the sheep. And I decided it was good enough. And so, we went for a stop. But we were on the desert floor. And the sheep was up on there. And we got over close to the, you know, where it starts rising. And I laid down and tried to shoot uphill. And it is a horrible position. That's very hard. That's terrible. I missed twice. And one of them you can see on the phone scope, the bullet just was like two inches over its shoulder.

So, that was kind of neat watching your bullet in slow motion. And so, anyway, then, of course, every day we had to take a siesta in the middle of the day. So, after our stock and a siesta, we went back to our original spot. And since we hadn't spotted anything in the morning, I wasn't really excited. And so, we were sitting there for half an hour or so and glassing the mountains. And then I heard Roberto and Juan, my 81-year-old guide, you could tell things. They were speaking in Spanish. And I could tell they were getting excited. So, I went around to the other side of the bush that I was glassing from. And here's two sheep up a side canyon. And so, anyway, one of them was the one I got. But, anyway, it was so Juan and Gabriel, which is Roberto's son. And Grayson and I took off. And it was like 900 yards over to where the sheep was. And so, we went 700.

And, of course, as soon as you get off the desert floor, you start climbing through all this garbage. And everything down there has thorns except one kind of tree. And, anyway, oh, and then I'll back up here. They haven't had a drop of rain in two years. And when they do get rain, it's like flash floods. And so, there's these previous flash floods came down the mountain. And there's empty creek beds there, which is big boulders. And you climb over the big boulders and then through the dry creek bed and up the other side, across the boulders, and back on the side of the mountain. And then you come to another one. And so, we were fighting our way up through there. And, finally, we got within about a couple hundred yards of the sheep. And, anyway, I found one of those trees that has no thorns on it. And so, we got all set up.

And Grayson put his backpack in the crotch of the tree to get me up a little bit more. And something soft to bed the gun in. And, anyway, the wind was blowing sideways quite fiercely. And the tree was shaking. But, anyway, my first shot was a non-lethal shot. But it was a hit. And I heard it smack. But, and then the sheep disappeared. And the next thing you know, he's up on top of a great big knob. And all you can see is his head and neck. And he's just looking at us. And we're looking at him. And so, then, finally, we moved. We had to change locations three times, I think it was, before we found him again. And then I found another one of those non-thorny trees. And got all set up. And, anyway, I couldn't see the sheep at first. Grayson found him and had to describe which cactus he was hiding behind. The green one. The green one. Well, the other green one.

But there was one that was, you know, just a solo tree sticking up. And then it had an arm sticking out the side of it up, you know, 20 feet or so. And then there was a bushy one. And those bushy ones are the ones the sheep eat for their water. And, so, anyway, he finally guided me to where the sheep was. And I got all set up. And so, I tried to time it between wind gusts and everything else. And, so, finally, I had Grayson hang on to the limb to keep it from moving. And then he plugged his ear. And then held his binoculars, my binoculars, with his other hand. And I pulled the trigger, finally. And I went to put another bullet in, worked the bolt. And Grayson says, no need. He said, I saw him drop straight down. And he says, and he kicked a couple times and rolled down the hill. So, I said, oh, good. That's great. So, we headed that way.

And, of course, Roberto and some others were watching us from down at the truck. And, so, anyway, we made it about 100 yards further up the hill, mountain, whatever you want to call it. And, anyway, we found a rock that there was a piece out of it. And it was an absolute chair. Had a back seat, everything. Grayson finally said, sit down. And so, I sat down. And just moments later, here come Carlos and the spotting crew. And they raced right by us. And they had another 100 yards to go. And pretty soon, here come the sheep down the mountain. And there was four guys each holding a leg. You know, the sheep was upside down. And the head was on the fifth guy's shoulders. And here they come. And they packed the whole thing right down there and posed him in that spot that Grayson cleaned out. And then that's where all the pictures were taken.

Can't beat that. That's service right there. That's my kind of hunt right there. Right. Yeah. And then Carlos wanted to know, he couldn't speak English. And I can't speak Spanish. So, I got the message. He wanted to know how much cape I wanted. So, I took my walking stick and marked a spot back behind his shoulders. And supposedly, that's what I've got coming. You do have it coming, right? I got the message. It's on the way. It said a week or two. And we're well into the second week. Yeah, great. I should be hearing something soon. He said two or three weeks. So, Bob, didn't this ram end up being bigger than the one you initially missed? It was just kind of interesting how this kind of turned out the way it did. Yes. The second ram was quite a bit bigger than the first ram. And there was nothing wrong with the first one.

And this one here, between the horns, you can't get your finger between the horns. That's close. And they are broomed off. But they were 16 and a half inches around the bases. That's heaven. Yeah. And he ended up right there close to book, isn't he? Well, Roberto thinks he's 168 or 169. But we'll find out here when he gets to my taxidermist in Reno. Yeah. And he's supposed to get him measured and scored and everything as soon as he gets him. But that's a few days off yet. That's awesome. Well, so you made it off the mountain. Tell everybody how they take care of you. I remember the food from when I've been down there with Roberto. And I love Mexican food. And it's authentic. It's as good as you get. Yeah. I'm looking forward to going down with this hunt winner. Tell us about that and how they took care of you there. We each gained five pounds. That's hard to do on tortillas. I don't know.

Beans and tortillas. Yeah. That's awesome. Yeah. We ate meat two times. And then they sliced up the tenderloins and made jerky. And that came home with me. And I ate every... Well, Grayson's wife ate a piece or two. And I think Grayson ate a piece and I ate all the rest. And it was good. But, no, the ranch, your place where you sleep, you know, your bungalow, whatever you want to call it. It's just fantastic. Everything's clean and nice. And they would ask you if you wanted to shower when you were eating dinner. And if you did, the water tank is only like a 15-gallon water tank. But there's a hole underneath of it. And they just start a little fire. And then they heat the hot water up. Yeah. I've done it. That's what they do in Mexico. The remote stuff. Yep. There's no... Yeah. It's fantastic. And I just want you to know that the other day I bought a ticket for the sheep hunt. All right.

I got one ticket in there for the sheep hunt. Well, that's... If you win, you're probably going to frustrate some people. If I win, it's Grayson's. Oh, that'd be cool. That'd be fun. I buy lottery tickets on every sheep hunt that comes out. And so the next one I win is Grayson's. Well, tell us a little bit about some of the other... Not necessarily the full stories, but just some of the other sheep hunts that you've experienced over your life. It seems like you've killed quite a few sheep. You've shared some of those photos with me. Well, I've got all four. And the first one was in 2005. I won the once-in-a-lifetime Washington sheep hunt. And in a way, I had a friend that had done it earlier, you know, many years before. And he said, oh, if you do, he said, I have a guy that you want to hire for a guide. So as soon as I won, I called my friend and he directed me to the...

He was a deputy sheriff at the time for the county over there on the east side of the mountains. And so I called him up and he said, yes, he said, I can guide you. But he said, I have to get a temporary guides license. So anyway, he only charged me $1,500. And we went over a day early. And anyway, he had a wall tent set up in his backyard. And he hired a neighbor, an old guy to do Dutch oven cooking. And so we did a rustic camp out in the guy's backyard in a wall tent. There you go. And so we went out that evening and we found, I don't know, 12 or 15 rams just from the highway. And so, oh, there was some nice ones. And anyway, I'd say, oh, there's a good one. But, you know, they weren't broken off or anything. He said, the bases aren't big enough. And so anyway, so we kept looking. And finally, we found a group of five. And there was a real good one in the group of five.

And so we mentally marked where they were at. And we found a pair. And number two was in, oh, that first bunch had one and three in it on a ranking. And we found another pair. And there was, we had him for number two. And so anyway, and it went on down to five. And so the next morning we went out. And as we passed the spot where number two was, he was up there on the hillside with his buddy. And then the other one, we went down the canyon further and looked. And the five had disappeared. And so he says, what do you want to do? And I said, well, number two is fine. So we went back to number two. And we get out of the truck down at the highway. And he says, you've got to go by yourself. I said, why is that? He said, because he says, the more people, he said, you spook them. So I went up a little canyon there.

And then when I figured I was about the same height as them, I popped over the ridge. And out there a couple hundred yards was my two sheep. But then I realized I didn't know which one was the big one. Oh, no. So I backed down the ridge a little bit and stood up. And I swung my arm sideways, you know, along my side. And then I put it above my head, meaning, is it the upper one or the lower one? And after two or three of those episodes, my son-in-law stepped out and waved his arm down beside his side. So I interpret that to be the lower one. And so I, you know, so then I settled down and I shot the sheep. And the noise reverberated through the canyon. And the sheep turned and ran right to me. And he'd go down a little draw and come up. And every time he'd crash, I'd have a frontal shot. And so the last shot was at 90 yards or something. But out of five shots, he had three in him.

So he did not want to pass out. And I was afraid to go look at him until my son-in-law and the guy got up there. But it was the right one. And they scored him. And he's 12 and a half years old.

It's a California bighorn. And he's got big bases. So anyway, he scored real well. And then my little thing lay dormant until 2015. And I was up in British Columbia hunting moose, just meat moose. And with Jim Lancaster at Copper River. And anyway, one of the sheep guides from up north came down and was helping with the moose hunt. And at dinner one night, I sat beside him and we got to talk. And then he said, oh, he said the average sheep hunt only lasts two days. So he said, you got 10 or 14 days or something to hunt them. But he said, we're usually done on the second day. And so I love odds. And I don't gamble, but I know good odds when I hear them. So I started making payments. And in 2017, I went hunting up in the Northwest Territory. And we flew in in the helicopter and landed. And the next morning was the opening day of sheep season. And we walked up a mountain, a big one.

And then around the top and over to the next one. And late in the afternoon, we found a sheep. So we had to back around the mountain and to pursue our sheep. And anyway, all of a sudden, there's another one in our way. So we had to abort our plan and get out of there. And so we made it back to camp at 1 o'clock in the morning. And it was still light. So you didn't even need a headlamp. And so the next morning, we get up. And the guide's packing his pack. I already had mine packed. But I wouldn't put it on until we were ready to go. And so anyway, I'm standing there watching him put all of his stuff in his backpack. And a white sheep appears at the same level we are, 200 yards out of another canyon. So I told him. And he got his spot and scope back out. And he looked at it. And he said, well, that's the same one that we were looking at last night.

I said, well, if he's legal last night, he's still legal this morning. So he said, sure enough. And the reason we knew it was the same one is because the sheep had a scar, not a scar, an injury on his nose from fighting. And he had a black scab on his nose. And so how often would that happen to two different sheep in the same area? So anyway, so I shot the sheep right from camp. And we went over there. And it was a brand new lightweight Savage .30-06. And using a rock, I got lots of scratches in it from the recoil. So anyway, that's my memory of the scratches. But anyway, we went over there and processed our sheep. And the satellites were lined up about 3 o'clock in the afternoon. So he radioed out. And here come the helicopter. So we were done in a day and an hour. Wow. Awesome. And the first one took an hour and 15 minutes. So then I, oh, and it turned out to be a fan and sheep.

So then I realized that I just saved a whole bunch of money from not having to go pursue a stone. There you go. So then I started making payments on another one. And in 2019, I went back. And we went to the same general area. And there was lots of sheep, but they were all lambs and ewes and young billies, rams. And anyways, we couldn't find a decent ram. And it was like 50 sheep in there or more. And we had a couple come right by us on the trail. We were, I don't know, within 10 yards of them. And so anyway, some good memories. So after two and a half days or so, we had the helicopter come get us and move us over to another spot. And anyway, we spent a couple days over there. On the fifth day, we finally shot a, it's not a large sheep, but it's legal. And so anyway, but there was no way we had crossed over the mountains and slid down some rock chutes.

And there was no way you were going to go back to camp without the helicopter. So we were going to have to call the helicopter. So I shot the sheep. So then we had to call the helicopter anyway. So anyway, and we had taken a string and checked the horns to make sure we were legal. And Jim brought a straight edge when the helicopter came in because he wanted to make sure. Yeah. And he was not happy that we shot the sheep because he said there was bigger ones, but it was legal. So the heat was off. But anyway, so then the rest is history. And until, well, in the meantime, I had cancer. I built a new house and whatnot. And then I told my wife if there was any money left over after the house was built, I was going to go sheep hunting. So that's how, and I ran into, pardon? That's how you went to Mexico, basically, yeah. Right.

Well, I ran into Kim Nieders from Wild Sheep up at the GOABC there in Canada because I'm a life member up there also. And I sat beside her and we were talking and she said, well, you need to finish. I said, well, I agree. But, you know, money's kind of an object. So anyway, she gave me a name. And so I had been burnt once before on a sheep hunt. So I was checking it out. And that's when I called Jason. And then he gave me Roberto's name. And then I called Kim back and she even checked out Roberto through the wildlife biologist for the area and gave me the thumbs up. So the hunt was on. And while then I had to do my payments and stuff for Roberto and and but I just can't say enough good stuff about Roberto's facilities. And his, you know, visiting with him and and learning about the cactus and and all that good stuff. And and it's just fantastic. Pretty awesome. Anyway, he had a high rack.

So he took us for a ride one afternoon. And, you know, he comes pick you up at three o'clock in the afternoon and it's 80 degrees or 78 or something. And so I climbed up in the high rack and didn't take a coat. But as soon as the sun starts going down, I was freezing. And so we had checked out lots of these feeders and waters and stuff. And anyway, finally, I asked to get down in the cab because I was freezing to death. And Grayson stayed up in the top. And the very next water that we came to, here's a big deer. Jeez. And I didn't get to see it. So that Grayson said it was one of those 30 inchers. Jeez. And you're within 50, 60 yards of it. Sounds like you got to experience all of Sonora and even more. Well, Bob, I imagine you've got some tractor work today. I think I've talked to you yesterday when you were on the tractor getting off.

Well, I was up at the house when I finally looked at my phone. And I'm getting ready to break ground for another building. So I like buildings. Wow.

That's awesome. I don't do a lot. It's at 86. But I hire the right people. And they do my magic for me. And then I do what I can. What's the secret to staying young and hunting through your 80s? First of all, the good Lord took care of me and keeps me healthy. And it's just getting up every morning. And my wife says I get the wrong kind of exercise. But my doctor says, whatever you're doing, just keep doing it. What kind of exercise? What is she not a fan of? Yeah. What does she think you don't do right? And what are you doing? Well, I should go for long walks and, you know, and swad a little and whatnot. But I walk, I walk, when I was going, getting ready to go down to Mexico, I was doing like 10,000 steps a day. And I've had, I just finished making hay last week or so. And one day I had 22,000 steps. Yeah. Geez. Nothing wrong with good old farm work.

What's she got against getting your steps in? Well, because I don't do it all at one time. She wants you to jog 10,000. No. I think when I first retired 30-some years ago, she does two miles almost every morning. And I tried to walk with her. And the next thing you know, she's 50 yards ahead of me. So then I would jog to catch up. And then I'd be with her for a few steps. And then she'd pull away again. And I just can't walk as fast as she does. But anyway... I'd go back to the tractor and the hay field as well myself. Yep. Right. And after two weeks, my hips were sore. My knees were sore. Everything was sore. So I just quit. Do my own little thing. And so I just, you know... It's working. It's worked so far. Right. Hunting sheep in your 80s. That's hard to do. That is. That's pretty awesome. Right. I set a record with Roberto because his previous oldest hunter was 84.

And I was 85 and almost 86 when... Yeah. When you killed. When I got my sheep. So he said, I'm the new record holder now. Ah, that's a good record. All right, Bob. Well, we'll let you go. We sure appreciate you coming on the podcast with us and visiting with us about your hunt. I'm glad to do it. And whoever wins the sheep hunt this year is going to have a grand time. And you guys that go with him are going to have a great time. And so they have a great operation. And Roberto, he was going to take me in October. And he said, well, the sheep are up on top of the mountain. And when he found out how old I was, he said, well, we'll just let them come down in February.

And they're still up on the side of the mountain or hill or whatever you want to call it. But they're very accessible. And, you know, you might have to walk quite a ways across the desert, but they're still accessible. And it makes it for terrific hunting. And I wasn't going to get excited until the fifth day, at the end of the fifth day. And this was only the third day. So the pressure wasn't on yet. Yeah. But, no, it's wonderful. You chose a very good hunt to give away. And whoever wins it won't have a problem. Okay. That's what I'd like to hear. Sounds good. Sounds good. All right, Bob. Okay. I watched Devin when he was like, if you go down, you're out. If I go down, you keep going. There is an eye in the team. But you guys are going to go together until one of you go down. Until I die. We're going to cross the finish line. I thought you did relay phases. No. Is there ones that you've done like that before? No. It's all. What's the team part about it?

Then you all do the whole race. You just go together. You have moral support. Embrace the suck. Yeah. I'm glad. I don't have to go by myself. I thought you had. Devin tracked it last year. And it was like just over 14 miles. And you're gaining like 4,000 feet of elevation with obstacles along the whole thing. This is awesome. It's a big one. Yeah. What's it called? A beast. It's a Spartan beast. Is it? It's the beast. Yeah. It'll be fun. And below that is a sprint. And a super. Below that. That I've never done. What do you mean? And below. They're lesser. It's a 10K and a 5K. Yeah. And we're doing a 21K. Okay. That's where the lesser men go. Right? The boys. Cash went straight to the top. Yeah. I went straight to the grave. I think it's doing all of them, right? I think it's kind of interesting that Devin invites you on the team. But it's a solo event. I made the team an hour before.

There is an I in team. There is an I in team. Each man for themselves. That's it. There was no team until Cash joined the team I made. I thought this was a relay system. You know?
