EP 359: Summer Scouting, Running Trail Cameras and Necessary Gear for the Upcoming Season

Yes, over 21. So anyway, they let you have long rifles. They do. You can even probably buy a pistol. I have bought a pistol. That was my first purchase on my 24th birthday. I went to the pawn shop, bought a Glock. You did? Yeah. I want to protect myself. That's when he becomes the man. He's going to protect himself against all the ladies on campus.

That's right. Just to prove I could. What's a chambered in? Nine. Yeah. I've got rid of it since. I like a Sig Sauer a little bit better. Oh, yeah? Springfield Sig. Yeah. I'm on those now. All right. Profile. Which profile? I'm looking for it. Which profile do I want? Oh. It's kind of like what Logan does on swiping left or right. That's right. You know what I mean? I'm looking through my range finder. Yep. I think I want that one. Choose which one you want to spend your time with for this week. I don't know. That'd be a fun thing. We could all bring all of our guns, personal guns in here. You remember how Logan, when he draws winners for our social media drawings and stuff, you have that little wheel thing? Yeah. You put your personal guns in there and say, Jason, you're going Antelope Punt of Wyoming. With a 330. Which one? And you win, and it's a 22-250. Yeah. Okay. It better be legal.

It better be legal. But, yeah, let's keep the legal parameters, but that might be fun. I mean, I'd even throw the Creedmoor in there because I've never even killed someone. I've never even hunted with a gun. But I'd throw it on the list. I want to throw out a did you know. Or maybe I'll ask. I don't know how to ask this question. But it's on my mind. You can't hurt my feelings. Did you know that non-residents are not allowed to hunt sage grouse in Nevada? No. I did not know that. Yeah. Google that. Google that. Add that to the list. We can't hunt sheds. We can't trap bobcats. What else? Well, okay. So, everybody can't hunt sheds, but they only really go after us, right? That law was meant for us. Okay. The eastern flank of Nevada. Yeah. But we can't. And then we can't trap bobcats. And then we can't. Really? And why did this question. Sage grouse. Why did this come upon your mind?

They're everywhere. You've seen a lot. Where I've been out and about. We have. Do you call them coveys or flocks? What do you call them? Herds. What do you call them? Look it up, Logan. Chat. GBT. I don't know. You're good at that. Flock. I mean, sometimes. Oh, at one water, there must have been 25 or 30 of them. They never quit jumping up. Flushing. And they're thunderously loud. And the big ones are just giant. On some episodes of Alone, that's like all they survive on. Really? Where? Yeah. What state? But they're usually in the Arctic. Dink grouse. Like little. Yeah, they're little. But these ones you could feed. Yeah. A family.

It's unbelievable. Hey, hey. It doesn't matter how many mouths you have to feed. These things are giant. They are. They're giant. I mean, there's half a lamb flying through the air.

I'm just saying. And Nevada is withholding that. A whole quarter of beef. A whole quarter of beef flying through the air. They call it a lek. No, that's like a breeding ground. That's where they meet. That's where they mate and where they come to the lek. But what's a flock of them? A covey? A covey? A covey, yeah. A flock. A flock. Anyway, pretty funny. That's funny. Pretty funny. And there was little ones and big ones. But I don't think they're called a lek. But they meet at the lek. But anyway. Yeah. No, it's saying. Yeah, lek is the breeding grounds. Covey is like a small flock. And then flock is a large gathering. Okay, this was a large gathering. And then there was chucker and grouse together. I mean, it was just. You had an up-and-game. It was enjoyable. Extravaganza. Yeah, it was enjoyable. And like, Sean was with me and he had a renewed vigor for wildlife.

Because we're usually deep in where there's no wildlife. There's no wildlife. Desert. Sparrows. I don't know. Not even that. Maybe some bats and an owl. I mean, there's nothing out there. So when you're driving around and you're seeing a game that you could eat and you would actually want to eat. It's fun. It's interesting. Well, and he has a dog. So it would be fun if you could shoot him and retrieve him and eat him and keep shooting him and eat him. Keen and I would go wild. It is. It was wild. And it was like. I don't know. I've seen. I want to say we saw over 100. Wow. In one day. Like. And you verified that. Because I wouldn't know. I don't have bluebirds. Other than grouse and chucker a little bit here in Utah. Unbelievable. Oh, you verified that we can't. Yeah. Google that while we're talking. What do you mean? I thought you looked it up. I just want a second. Second opinion.

I mean, I hit chat on it. But sometimes chat's not quite right. And they say that Elon Musk's GPT whatever chat. I don't know. AI is more like accurate than chat. Yeah. I don't know. Sometimes. Elon's frustrated at me a little bit lately. So I don't know if I'd support him. It was saying. Anyway. They're just like areas are subject to close to non-residents by the Nevada board. So I don't know if it's a general closure of non-resident sage house hunting or if it's just for right now. John. John. Jason, that's for another day. You should go back, right? Like this afternoon. Dude. Well, it wouldn't be open until probably September. But. I don't want all the residents knowing about it. I mean. I mean. Where were you? Here we can. Non-residents hunt. Flock shoot. Grouse. Yeah. Flock shoot. After shooting our hunt grouse. Sage. Use the word sage. I'm sure you can shoot blues. But maybe not.

All right. Searching. Searching.

No. Non-residents are not allowed to hunt sage grouse in Nevada. According to the most recent, which was 2324, small game hunting regulations, are explicitly closed to non-resident hunters in all designated hunt units. There is one notable exception, it says. What? Well, upon the governor's. Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge. Silver State Tent. Refuge sage grouse hunt. They have one there. Special permit only event held on specific weekends. There were so many. It was like, man. I know there's been an initiative to save them and to protect them and to conserve them and all the good things. But anyway. You're telling us they're saved. I think with weather. You know we've had heavy chucker. Yeah. Whatever. Broods. Broods. Don't need to look up. Chuckers are everywhere. And so anyway, maybe it's kind of similar. Sage grouse are doing well, too, in certain parts. All right, Bronson. Take us.

Now that we've gone to the up on game forecast. It's unbelievable. Blowing my mind. What else have you got? So you've been scouting like crazy. John, you've been scouting like crazy. Logan's been scouting like crazy. I've been golfing and scouting some. You have been. It's good. We all do other things, too. But, John, I opened up my Onyx to you. Yes, you did. How are you doing with it? I freaking smashed it. You know. Okay. I've got over 50 cameras out. No big bucks yet. That's cool. Yeah, no big bucks yet. I mean, they're just. You can't tell how they're going to finish. I know. We've got some shanks. You've got some. And some of them aren't slick. Some of them aren't slick. Some of them are. What about you, Logan? I have. I've got to do another oil change on my dirt bike. That's how many trail cameras I've been checking. I'm just about to ask you about the dirt bike.

You haven't laid it down again, or did you? Haven't laid it down since the last podcast. You are checking cameras on the dirt bike? Oh, it's so nice. It's 50 times faster than a truck. What? Yeah. I can do it. So you divide them up into sections by about 25-mile radius. Back up in the truck. Yeah. Go to the new section. Do four or five. Just chuck a little. I bought one of those little QU 2000 or 2500 packs. Throw a couple trail cameras, drill batteries, SD cards in there. Roll. It's so fast. It's unbelievable. And so your dad's like, oh. Your dad's enjoying having Logan. He went and bought a dirt bike. What? Because of this? On the 4th of July, I had on the 3rd of July, I checked trail cameras with my dirt bike. So when I went home for the 4th, I had it in the back of my truck. And my brothers and dad were all down, and they're riding it around, playing on it.

Finally, my one brother's like, he's just about done with med school, and it's tough. He's like, this is exactly what I need to keep my sanity. So he's like, do you want to ride with me tomorrow to Richfield and get a dirt bike? Who said this? Your brother? My brother, Austin, who's in med school. Yeah. Awesome kid. And yeah. And so anyway, he decided what one he was going to buy. What was it? It was a Kawasaki KTX 230. So it's the trail version, the Kawasaki version of what I bought. And then my brother, Andrew, is like, well, if you're getting one, I'm getting one. And he decided on a Yamaha TTR 230. Nobody can get the same. No. Well, and then my dad's like, well, if you suckers are all going to go ride dirt bikes together, I'm not sitting at home. I'm doing a TW 200. He almost did. He almost did. And then I told him, I said, if you're going to get the TW, you talk to these guys.

And he's like, he went to, we were at Jorgensen's in Richfield. And he's looking around and the Kawasaki Trail version has one that's street legal. And he's got a motorcycle endorsement. He does? Yeah. And so he bought the T30. But you have to insure it, right? Yes. Yeah. Which is not, yeah. Not terrible. No. And registration's kind of expensive, but not a car expensive. And so anyway, he bought the Kawasaki Trail bike, but it's street legal. So it's got a little different tuning. Which would be like our TW. Probably. It's street legal. Yeah. And yep. So we all bought them. And he went and checked trail cameras on a Saturday night. He did? Do you like it? Yeah. Well, everybody was making fun of me because I was complaining about that trip I did where I laid it down a lot and my butt hurt and I wasn't in shape for it. And he's, oh, it's not that hard because he drove. It wiped him.

And he was like, I only got three done and I had to go back to the truck and do the rest out of the truck. Oh, yeah. It's like riding a horse. If you ride a horse once every 10 years, you can't walk after two hours. Horsemen, it's their favorite thing. Go ahead and throw a dude on a saddle. Hang on. Gringo, jump on. How'd that feel? Yeah. How'd that sound? I'll treat you. Oh, it fits good. Two hours later, you're begging for mercy. I had quite a few people reach out after the last podcast and tell me that I wasn't up in the night complaining about that dirt bike ride because it's tough. Well, that one's no joke. Yeah. Yeah. I've told you I've known people to take trucks up there. Yeah. And I would like to meet those people. Okay. Well. That was probably 25 years ago. It was. It was. That road had some weathering and erosion.

I was considering whether or not you could take a side-by-side up it. It's bad. Yeah. You can. I mean. If you're man enough, huh? Well, I mean. Mouth guard. Yeah. Bunch of plugs. My side-by-side's got like over 7,000 miles now. It's no joke. Yeah. I mean. Anyway. But whatever. All right. You guys have been getting after it, though. I like it. It's the heat of the season. Yep. We've only got three weeks left to pull cameras down, roughly. Plus or minus. Yeah. And Utah. So, throw a shout-out to Stealth Cam. We're putting those out like crazy. Shout-out. Stealth Cam. Being stealthy. Anybody needs one, give us a holler. We're actually running low, aren't we? Yeah, we are. We're getting down to the end. I think we had, I don't know, a few dozen. Yeah. I would say like 50 or 60. Yeah. Which that's down from hundreds and hundreds. Yeah. So. I kind of wish I lived in New Mexico.

There's none of these janky laws. I mean, you can't run a cellular cam. But you can run regular cameras year-round. Yeah. We learned that by saying that on a podcast. Oh, I know. Game and fish hit us right away. And that's fine. We only had a couple out. Joked about it being one. We didn't. We didn't. I'm just teasing. We joked about it being, you know, literally one step above old Mexico. Yeah. Because it borders it. Yeah. Yeah. And then you probably could. No, you can't. No, you can't. Yeah. So, anyway. But you can let SD card cameras run 365. Yeah. I mean, that's one of the good states. We're going to look at it like, I don't know, like. One of the good ones. Or Texas, you know.

Wyoming. I don't know. One of the last holdouts. One of the last good ones. But, anyway. Yeah. So, there you are. Scouting's going good. Scouting's going great. Yeah. I know my gear. It's time to buy gear. And so, we've been buying gear. But my gear hasn't left the office. Okay. So, Adam keeps looking at my gear. It's truly. It comes. Well, I have. He's got the same gear. 75% of what he has. Same gear. Same gear. I just take it. I did clean my desk. An office. A couple weeks ago. Yeah. And I was looking. I said, I haven't had time. I got a bow. Needs to be shot right there. I got small spotters. All kinds of stuff. Big spotters. Big spotters. Whatever. You know. Stuff. Scopes. But, anyway. Tis the time. Tis the season. And it's definitely picked up here. We've been getting a lot of calls this last. Well, after the 4th. I don't know. Probably it's just July. The calendar flipped.

And for a lot of the earlier hunts. Starting August. Antelope. Deer. Archery deer. You know. Even archery elk. They're kicking off here soon. So, a lot of guys are buying tripods. Buying all spot and scope. Everything. We've still got a lot of inventory. We make a point to stay up on that. And so, if you need something. And you put it off. Give us a call. Because we can get it to you fast. And we've actually already started to get some calls. Jason. I think you got one. Yeah. Or somebody else. Some people that are using your gear out there. Dropping binos and getting them out of alignment. And they need something fast. Some of these guys are hardcore. And just. They're glass and heavy right now. Well, it's happened to all of us. And they dropped a pair of 15s. It's like, hey. It's happened to me and you. Yes. I've had them tip over on the old days on a tripod. You can send them back.

Now they're out of alignment. And they fix them. Yeah. And the hunts are coming up. So, keep all that in mind. Give us a call. But if you have been putting something off. Give us a call. I wish I could remember. Logan. I just want to stop you right there. Okay. Logan spends more money on gear bronson than you and I. And we've documented this many times. I sold him a gun earlier in the year. Okay. Then I sell him a gun and a muzzleloader both. And I try to sell him something. He goes, I'm done. I'm done, Adam. I'm done spending money. The next week he buys a dirt bike. The next week he buys a muzzleloader. I know. And a rifle in my. And I loved seeing that leave my office.

And now I hear about of a big QU order. I mean, look at this. What's the total? Scroll down. I want to see the total. Oh, I've ordered some stuff from QU. I did the Venture Divide 2000. Venture Divide. It's a sweet pack. So I got one from my dad for Father's Day because he's got an archery hunt this year. He just needs to be able to throw some water and some stuff in and go. And I bought him one and I got here and I was like, oh, crap. I need one too. Yeah. Because I had that dirt bike and I was like, that's perfect. You do. I like that word. And then the Tiburon pants. The Tiburon are no joke. They are. So they're thin pants for the summer. They're really thin. And I was a little bit cautious ordering them because with those thin pants, sometimes they just tear so easily on thorns and stuff. They tear a bit, but you order those and you need them. Yes, you do need them. You do.

But I wore them that day that I laid my dirt bike down like 15 times. Not even a thread is showing. Yeah. You need new handlebars, but your pants are fine. But my pants lasted. And so that was a testimony of those two years. I live in those all summer long. So why does it say, welcome back, best customer of the year? Yeah. Why does it say that? I think I'm ranked three out of all 20,000. I mean, it's just stupid. That's no joke. I love it. I love it. I'm closing out my account before you guys can look at it. It's good stuff. Yeah. I've been buying a bunch of stuff too. Ty got home, so he grew. So he's been trying on his clothes. And he went out with like a 28 waist or 29. Now he's 32 or 34. He filled out. So his pants don't fit at all. I like it when that happens to other people. Yeah, me too. I mean, geez. But yeah, so we've been stocking up too. Did a big order and got it real fast.

That was the number one request. We had a mid-week thing. This is not mid. We're about 30 hours into this thing, you guys. My last meal was Sunday at 5. Jason, you might want to clarify. You did not participate. I've got cameras to run, scouting to do. I misspoke. This is John's off week. I get excited, and I was like, I can't do this. I'm going to die. And I have to have a good attitude. Like, I mean. You might die out there. Anybody else out there that doesn't eat, do they get hangry? You know what I mean? Anyway, this just wasn't the week. Are you two holding up all right, though? Yeah. Logan, you act like you're John. It's very interesting. Yeah, it is weird. Without going into too much details, just the base. Well, I was thinking it was like a colon cleanse, but it's not. It's not like that at all. So, you know, that hasn't been. Then why the cayenne? So, yeah, I don't know.

Well, it's something to think about throughout the day. I mean, can't you just drink water? I'm not as hungry as I thought I'd be. I thought I'd be dying. But I think the cayenne syrup, lemon. It's faking you out. It's something, and it's like churning in my gut, and I'm not that hungry. Wow. Yeah. So, yeah. I struggle. I told John, I was like, I struggle around the times that I usually eat. So, lunchtime and dinnertime, I'm struggling, and then kind of get into the mode, start working, get distracted, and you're like, you don't even notice it. If you notice, John, and even Logan, like, Jason and I have just slipped out of here the last two days, gone to lunch. Yeah. We're not trying to make it hard on you. No. That's good. We're fine if you want to come visit at lunch, but to eat in front of a guy is rude. It's kind of bad. No. It's, I'm fine so far. I don't, you know, it's interesting.

So, I mean, second day is supposed to be the hardest, but, yeah. So far, it's been a no-brainer. The concoction that you drink is rough. Is it worse than Miralax? No. The Miralax is, it just rips you apart. You should at least chat GBT, the concoction, and not just go by everybody's word for it. Like, is that a common? I did some research. Yeah. That's the recipe that everybody knows. It is. Yeah. A little bit of sugar, a little bit of cayenne. Yeah. The amount of cayenne is the one that varies the most, but it only varies between half a teaspoon to a full teaspoon per gallon, so. And it's hard to explain, like, how it's just. It's disgusting, but it's. It doesn't really taste, like, strong, and you just chug it, chug it, chug it, and then all of a sudden, your throat is on fire. What? But it's not, like, spicy. It's just weird.

And then, if I don't chase it with Apex stuff, I couldn't do it. You've got to chase it with something. Yeah. Just to get a fruity flavor back in your mouth. So, do we have to back up a little and explain to people that didn't listen to the last podcast, like, you guys are having this five-day cleanse. It was all over social. I mean, you're not a cleanse. Just Google it. And then, somehow, you guys felt compelled to tell the world that, I am doing the five-day purge. Right? So did you. No, I didn't do it. I didn't post it. I know, but you told everyone. Friday or whenever. So, you guys posted, I signed up for the five-day cleanse. Yeah. It's kind of like. I'm going to do it. I got hit up by. Social media is holding you accountable. Yes. It's kind of like having the accountability, buddy. Got to have it. I knew that if I went into this with the opportunity to back out, I would back out.

So, you went out full force? Oh, yeah. Yeah. With your hand in the air. What about your dad? Is he in it? No. He thinks I'm an idiot. Well, Logan, you're 24, too. I would have done it. But, and like Devin, others are. We've got trips coming up here soon. And I don't want to be in recovery mode while I'm on an airplane somewhere. Yeah. I wouldn't do it. And I know Devin and Wyatt don't eat it. I wouldn't do it if I had something. They just had a good break for five days. No trail cameras. Yeah. Lined up perfectly. No nothing. Have you decided what you're going to eat when you're done, John? No, but this is torture. Apparently you have to ease into it. Like a piece of bread would be good. Yeah. Applesauce would be good. So that ginormous New York strip I bought and put my... What? Not first. You don't have any... Some saltines maybe. Yeah.

How does a kid Logan's age buy a freaking steak? Strip steak. It's unbelievable. He has no kids and no life. Yeah, but I mean, Logan, there's what they call savings accounts. What I would do is... That's for when you're old. What are you... Your first thing should be dunking graham crackers in almond milk or something like that. Oh, yeah. All right. That I can. Tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. Oyster crackers. I love to take a grilled cheese sandwich and dip it in tomato soup. Love it. That's enough food talk. Okay. You're right. What's your favorite food? I want a 24-ounce ribeye. Seasoned well. Oh, me too. Twice baked potato. And all the fat that's on the outside. We eat every bit of it. Oh. Just suck it. I like a loaded twice baked baked potato. That's really good. I'm deleting this whole episode. Grilled shrimp. Sweet potato. Shish kebabs. Jeez. Surf and turf. Oh, yeah.

I'm way excited for you. Just need to go check those cameras once in a while. Don't forget that. Because the deer aren't going to find themselves. You know what I mean? All right. So- Oh, hey. I have a question on the cameras.

Just the last time I was out, and so I wanted to ask you guys, you know, sometimes you just get in your thing. You just do cameras the way that you've always done cameras, and I was out of water, and a guy pulled up, and he stood there next to his camera, and we had a problem with one of our cameras, so I had to, like, do some maintenance, and so I was there for a little bit. You're janking with it. Yeah. Batteries or whatever. And so he stood there for 10 minutes, maybe, you know, looking at something, whatever he had, and then he's like, all right, I'm done. Like a viewfinder? Yeah. Like, I don't know, something. Probably a viewer. Yeah. A viewer or whatever. Well, this GMAX 32 Vision has the screen on it. But my question is, I'm getting between 2,000 and 8,000 photos per camera, right? You can't do that at every spot. How do you check it in 5, 10 minutes? You don't check the 2,000.

You don't. Yeah. You can't. So you got to have your settings different. What you do is you throw it in that little card reader in your phone, and you make sure it's taking night shots. It got a picture of you walking up. It's taking night shots and day shots. And then you can see the water. And then you'd go home and look at them later. And then, yeah. And then you stuff it in. You change out the card. It looked like he just put the card back in, and he's like. Well, if he did, he probably put in another card. But if he didn't, he's got it set to 30 seconds or a minute, and he got. Yeah. He missed it. 600 pictures. I don't know. It was just curious. Like, I've got. But, I mean, storage space is an issue. You know, with that many photos. And then you chill it out. When the weather's this hot in Nevada, and you run them on sheep guzzlers, you'll take over 1,000 a day.

And you can fit 12,000 to 15,000 pictures on some cards, depending on your resolution. But either that's the. You'll either fill them up, or your batteries are just dead from taking too many pictures. Yeah. And so you get about 10 to 14 days. So you can't let them go. And so you'll take a bigger card, like a 64 gig or 32 gig. Or, like Adam, like if you're on a guzzler, a sheep guzzler, and you're short range, do 8-meg photos. You don't need. So now you need 16. Right. Or then chill it out, too. The sheep will call it gravity, whatever. They stand there forever. And so you'll chill it out. You'll do one picture. 30, 25, 30 seconds. There's work. But I've got like, you know, 50 plus cameras and probably 20 extra cards. I don't have enough to like just collect all the cards. I've got 20 cards in each orifice of my truck. Yeah. You know what I mean? Yeah. Like when you get rolling.

So I have an even number. Or two and a half times. Yeah. Two and a half times. But I added, you know, a lot of cameras this year. So anyway, what I was doing was I was, you know, swapping out cards, putting in a fresh one. And then on my way to the next one, I download it. Jet. Yeah. Those would be checked. You would have 15 to 20 extras to work with. Yeah. You know. Yeah. You would stay on top of that. Well, I've downloaded them all to my computer. And then I ran out of space. Like on my computer, I was like, this is serious space. So I had to pull out a hard drive and start putting them on the hard drive. But I mean, it's. Yeah. You know. But yeah. A lot of space. These are called first world problems.

Chill them out. You can always chill them out. But if you do that, you just. You just run the risk of missing something. But it's fine. You're missing. Or having a low risk. Or having a low risk. No. I mean. Yeah. I just. I need to add some more cards. But it works good. It's just. Man. That's a lot. It's because it's work. To go through. Yeah. Some places have eight total deer hitting them. And no horses. And very little. Yeah. And you can get away with a lot more there than you can a place with. Cattle. Horses. Birds. And a bunch of deer. And bats all night long. Yeah. You know. You got to kind of. Then you got scheduled out. Scheduled. And you're doing night shots. 8 p.m. Day. Avoid everything in the middle of the day. You know. 9. 10 a.m. Then you're missing that one buck. Comes in at 10 a.m. Which has happened. It happens. Oh. On Saturday.

I had a little buck and two does walk through my backyard. Noon. I'm like. Why. Why are you up? Yeah. You know. No. Yeah. Kind of crazy. Kind of interesting. Kind of fun. All right. So anyway. There you go. Everybody's out and about doing scouting. We also have summertime things as far as gaining points. Yep. July flipped. And that means you got some points on the application periods open now. I'm sure we'll mention this several more times between now and the end. But we're going to list them out right here out of the gate. Right now all these are open. They open the 1st of July. But we've got Montana bonus points open until September 30th. These are for deer, elk, and antelope, and sheep, moose, goat. Bonus points. If you did not apply for those species already, you can go get the points now. The preference point is open, which applies to the general deer and elk combos.

That's open until December 31st. Yeah. July 1 and December 31st. They give you like five or six months to do that one. Keep in mind that one's $100. Don't go buy that point, a 2025 point. Again, if you applied for a big game combo, even if you applied and didn't pay the preference point fee, you can't go buy one now. Well, you're at one application. That's right. So you had to skip the general application altogether. Now you can buy one. But don't go waste or spend the $100 if you don't intend to apply in 2026. Yes. You'll lose the point. But the one nice thing. It gives you options. Yeah, the $100 gave me an option. You got to apply. It does. Or I got to apply, and I was like, I was kind of glad I had the option. Because my mentality changed from, say, December 15 to March 1st. So maybe you wait until December 31st, because by then, you're getting into 2026 mode anyway.

But that's a use or lose every year. You buy one this year, you've got to use it next year. That's why you're saying don't just buy it. The following year, it's invalid. Yeah, we're taught. We're always taught. Buy points. Buy points. Well, that's one you might. It's $100. But also think about it. If you know there's no way I'm putting in for Montana, don't go buy it this year. It's one of those. So you buy a point, and then the following year, you have to apply for a tag. And you buy your second one at that point. And you'll get your second one. And it's good for that particular draw, 2026. So now you have two points, and you're good to go. And if you were to go with an outfitter, you now have the outfitter point. You can jump to three if you are. You've got three, which is the max anyway. You're going to draw. So the bonus points, September 30th in Montana.

The preference for the general, December 31st. Wyoming is also open right now. Wyoming is a little bit differently. When you apply for the sheep and the moose, you have the option right then, Jason, if you remember. Yeah, deduct $150 for my refund. Keep a point or not. But the deer, elk, and antelope, it's screwy. You apply for it. You're unsuccessful. They don't automatically give you a point. So even if you applied for deer, elk, and antelope and were unsuccessful, don't assume you got a point. We've been saying this for years. You've got to go buy your deer, elk, and antelope points right now, even if you apply for them. Even if you apply. That's the one thing I think that people forget about is, well, I applied already. Yeah, you did. Every other state gives it to you automatically. Wyoming for deer, elk, and antelope doesn't get those done by October 31st.

I did mine the other day just so I could forget about them, both of Montana and Wyoming. Last one I want to cover is Oregon. Oregon's not as common. These other states, Montana. Hey, Montana and Wyoming. But Montana and Wyoming, you have to wait until the summer to do your points. But Oregon, you can do your points only in the regular draw. Most people get it in the regular draw. I do by May 15. But these other two states don't let you do your points only early. You have to wait. Oregon, you could have. So that's due November 30th. If you forgot Oregon, didn't apply, whatever, now you've got another option. That's right. They'll take your money clear up until November 30th. November 30th. That's right. So get those done. Get them out of the way. Yeah. Prepare for next year. Yeah. But also have, I'm going to give a shout out for a few lander tags we got kicking. Oh, I like it. I like it.

Only got one deer tag right now. These are opportunities similar to, say, going to our website and finding the new listings that Devin puts on there. Yep. We are getting calls from outfitters with people. It's getting that time of year. Call them cancellations. Call them just changing plans. People have issues. Shoes need to bump a hunt a year to a year out. Now they've got an opening this year. Logie Bear gets married. That's right. Whatever. All of a sudden, he doesn't have choices. New bike goes up. He's got to sell a motorcycle. Oh, no. Got to sell a gun to pay for the ring. Nope. Motorcycle. First and last month's rent on some wazoo place. Deposit. All that type of thing. Logan, reality is going to hit you so hard when it comes. Guys, I don't know. I'm really happy, but I'm not so happy. No. We will always have options, even if I'm married.

Well, yeah, and you're right, Jason. These landowner tags are unit-wide tags. You know, we do have people on a waiting list for a lot of these tags as they come available, but at some point, we get to the end of that and or people's plans change. But as far as deer, the only deer tag we have is an 051 Nevada deer tag. And keep in mind on Nevada deer tag, those are valid for all seasons. You know, an archery, rifle, muzzleloader gives you about three months. And it's actually a freaking good tag. Yeah. It is. Yep. Northern Nevada 051. Give us a call. Give Devin a call if you're interested in that. We do have, what, some 6C archery and mature bull tags in New Mexico and a couple. Looks like they've still got a couple of 15 muzzleloader tags for the elk. Those are all elk. 15 muzzleloader. A pair of those. 6C archery, 6C mature bull in New Mexico as well.

So, best way to get a hold is probably just call the 435-263-0777. Probably ask for Devin. You know, he's probably the one that, you know, if you want just a tag only, we'll sell it to you that way. If you need an outfitter to go with the tag, he's probably the guy you need to talk to about that. But, yeah, those aren't going to last too long. I don't think so either. And great, great values. Yeah. You know, the muzzleloader tags in New Mexico are interesting. I think we always talk about where you can kill a big bull.

And they're $50,000 tags in Nevada. They're 30, really, 20 to 50 plus, 20 to 80, 20 to 100, whatever, here in Utah. But New Mexico, because of iron sight provision, the five-day season, things like that, makes it a little less valuable. Maybe even a lot less valuable, but you're still hunting big bulls. Yeah, you are. You know what I mean? I mean, you're hunting 350-class bulls. You're paying for the buck in terms of dollar per dollar. Yeah. You can't compete with Utah and Nevada. No. So go hunt open sight. Okay. It's fine. It's an awesome tag. John, you've hunted 15. Yeah. I've hunted 15. There's elk everywhere. It's great. And it's one of those units, you know how, like, we talked about Ely elk units being, they've been good for three decades. Yeah. You know, two and a half decades. Your whole lives, pretty much. The whole hunting, as far as I can remember, they've been awesome.

Okay, unit 15's like that. I had a 15 when I was in my teenage years. Okay. Long time ago. Three and a half decades ago. Whatever. And it's been good since then. Interesting. Borders Unit 1, 27 of Arizona. Just a great opportunity for guys to go down there, do it yourself. Tons of public land. Tons of access. Anyone can do it. You're not backpacking. Four-wheelers. Side-by-sides. Which, four-wheelers aren't even a thing anymore, it feels like. You know what I mean? I still got one. So let's call it side-by-sides and dirt bikes for Logan. John, do you still have a three-wheeler? I've got multiple three-wheelers. How many is multiple? Speaking of four-wheelers. Two now. I've got two. You know, you give. John ends up with an RV storage. What do you got in there, John? Well, you know. Recreational vehicles. I've got a really soft spot in my heart for the 1980s. Oh, my gosh.

They even have shocks back then? I've got a 1984 200X Honda. Is it Cherry Cherry? It's Cherry. I don't know what year it was when the Big Red came out. Then the Big Red. I've got a Big Red. My grandpa bought one of those Cherry brand new. It is not Cherry. And Aaron grew up on those, and I'm like, I don't know how many times we rode those. Going 20 miles an hour. And never got really hurt. I don't know how. And the helmets weren't a thing. No. No. We didn't have helmets. But I saw a three-wheeler being ridden by the way out there. Yeah. Three peaks. And he was, I mean, every rim, all three rims were janked. Everything was janked. The fenders. Oh, didn't have any. And I was just like, oh, my gosh, that's a relic. Yeah. That kid is going to roll this thing. I mean, geez. No, I grew up on three-wheelers. That's all I did. Well, I mean, I did too.

But what I did learn is you should get rid of them if you own one. You did. No, I love it. Yeah. You can drift it back in like nothing else. Oh, my gosh. That's awesome. Yeah, I remember that. I remember you do this thing. Oh, yeah. On the front. Plow it around. I remember it. Oh, scary. So how do you keep the carburetor from gumming up? Are you just running non-ethanol? Or are you? Do you have a system every six months you start it? Or do you dry it out? No, my carburetor gets gummed up, and then I got to fix it. Okay. Yeah. I need to be better at it. Just dry it up. Like, I think just drain it and dry it up. I did that on the 200X. The other one didn't get done so well, so I've got to work on the carburetor. Yeah. I've just been wondering myself because I've got generators, and I've just dried up and stored them. Yeah. The old champions. Yeah.

Even old Hondas that I just don't use a lot. They're more for emergency. These things weigh a guy down. Yeah. You know the whole Ben Lilly story of just stuff weighs you down? You know what I mean? And you get tired of it, and you see a bird fly, and you just chase after a bird and never go back home. That's why you just need to simplify your life. Grab a beer. You guys don't know Ben Lilly? I don't know that story. Google Ben Lilly. Okay. Is this a thing? Lived with the hound dogs and yada, yada, yada. Just Google that. Is it a song or a poem? No. No. This is a dude. You just simplify your life. He is. Drink lemon juice, cayenne, and maple syrup, and just simplify. No, cultural. Just simplify your life. But I look at all these little engines hanging around, like all the leaf blowers or whatever you have in life, and it's just like, you got to keep that fuel fresh, and it wears you

out just thinking about it. I'm just going to say. This guy is interesting. Go ahead. I mean, dude. He's got a beard down to his belly button. Read about it. Hurry. Known for his incredible skills. Where did you learn about this, Jason? Dude, they have a book. Did you read it? Okay, this is cool. Do I ever read a book? Well, that's what I'm asking. I don't think you do, so how did you learn about this guy? I just read the preface. I don't know. Okay. I just know. Everybody knows Ben Lilly. I don't. I love this. He's famous for hunting down large numbers of grizzly cougar black bears. Dude, he's no joke. I mean, large numbers. One day, he's chilling out, and pretty soon a bird flies in, and he's like, follows the bird and never went back. That's awesome. I mean, he just lives out in the wild. I mean, dude, if you're a boy, Huck Finn has nothing on Ben Lilly. Tom Sawyer. That's a real dude.

I can't believe I've never heard of him. Oh, my gosh. Anyway, I'm just saying, where are we at? We'll read the material for you all. Go ahead. Read. Read if you like to read. Yeah. I don't like to read. Audiobooks. I do the audio thing a little bit. That's for sure. There's certain things you've got to read, right? Just to keep upright. But anyway. Yep. All right. So where are we at now? Well, I don't know what else. So we've got hunts also. We also have the hunts that we post. Devin keeps those posted. Yeah. If you're looking for something this year, we've also got the opportunity tag section coming out. There's, you know, we had some over-the-counter Utah tags come out. You can buy an archery over-the-counter general elk tag. We're not saying it's amazing. Some people would have you think that you're going to kill giants. You're not necessarily.

But it does give you an opportunity to go to the hills and hunt general season elk tag here in Utah. What else do we got, Bronson, that would be off the cuff? Well, so I just wanted to remind everybody, like sometimes we forget, like, hey, you know, what does a membership here at Epic Outdoors do for you? And now is the time that you can, you know, really take advantage of one of our big benefits, which is you draw a tag and you can call in and get, you know, names and numbers of members who have been there. I've hunted that unit in the past. And so, I mean, it goes a long ways to maximizing the tag. Totally worth the membership price. Speaking of unit 15, when I hunted it a few years ago, I called and I think the first three guys I called, like, totally loaded me up with pins. Gave me, you know, waters, everything. Like, I was way farther ahead with their information. It was nuts.

And sometimes you don't, you know, they don't give you a lot. But sometimes it's a tag that they're not going to hunt again or, you know, it's going to be a rare draw. And so, they're really free with information and helping you. So, anyway, that's just make the most out of your tag. And I think being a member of Epic Outdoors can help you a ton on that. Great point. Yeah, if you haven't done it already with a tag you have drawn, especially, well, it doesn't matter how long ago in the spring it was. So, if it was just in June here, give Wendy or Janet a call. They can put you down, email it out to you. You'll go on that list yourself for being able to, you know, help people out in the future. That's a great resource. You know what I will say?

What I've learned recently, well, okay, so what I've always known, but what I've really come to appreciate, is when times get hard in hunting, like, say, mule deer times, right? Mule deer times. Right now. You think outside the box, like, where is there not commercialized hunting pressure? Where, you know what I mean? Yeah. Where could I get the same experience I've had in the past somehow by accident? Or by planning, or just, where can I put myself in a chance? It forces you to, like this 051 Landlord tag, or it forces you to do something that's easier to draw because it's been less desired in the past. Yeah. And you end up learning cool stuff. There's some places, say, deer 37AMB in Arizona, or some other areas that we've talked about, Bronson, that wouldn't necessarily be good at, you'd be laughed at if you said it was good.

But you actually know a few great bucks that have come from these areas. Yeah. You know what I mean? So it just forces you outside the box a little bit. Depending on your point situation, being a realist, you have to look at it that way a little bit in places like in Arizona that isn't super deep in elite deer units. They have some elite ones, but they're not deep. Right. They're not deep like even maybe Nevada, or I can't even call Colorado. Say you've got your favorite six. But, you know, units. And beyond that, then it's a lot of mediocre to average throughout the state. But you do have the coos option there to use your points there, but that's what you're saying. You've got to... You start thinking. You can't just put in for the swing for the fence stuff your whole life and think you're going to have those experiences. Now, would the membership of $150 be worth it?

Just to say, well, Kaibab is the best in Arizona or Kaibab and Strip. You know what I mean? No. No. Everybody knows that. It's been that way for four decades. Yeah. Right? Five decades or whatever. You know? But it's these new places and we're constantly learning. And there's places in Colorado that I wish I... Sometimes I would think I wish I had the guts to waste a year on them, but I'm looking at my years saying, I don't know how many I have left. Mostly because I do dumb things. But, you know, but we're also getting older. And so you're like, well, do I want to use my Colorado year on this? And you don't want to sit home. That's worse than going and underachieving. So there's a couple of guys that call in and were like, give me those weird places that you're thinking about, but you haven't dared to do. You won't do. And then I'll go and learn it and report back. And so I've done that.

Yeah. It's been interesting. It's been fun. Like, you know what? I think you should try this. I've heard this and this and this. And they're like, okay, I'll give it a try. But then, you know, the return for that is, I mean, you got to be honest with me. Come back and tell me how I went. You know what I mean? I mean, that's part of it, right? And so anyway. It's silence. Kind of like you, John. Kill a giant. I'm willing to give you some inexpensive. I really want to know. Yeah. Yeah. You know, everything you learned with your gas money and stripes on the side of your truck. And I'm happy to give you all that. And all the $14,000 worth of scouting you've done. But anyway, pretty fun stuff. But here, yeah, here at Epic, $150 is chicken feed anymore. And you've got online research tools that give you all the drawing odds, kill percentages, best units.

You know, even, you know, part of that obviously is in our e-magazine version. But then also drawing odds for all units in some of these states. All species, all big game species anyway in the states. You can find it easily.

Tons of, you know, mapping and other things. There's just a plethora of stuff on there. And, of course, you can probably make that money back on one good, legit purchase at our store. Yep. Or in some cases, not that we talk people out of stuff as a, you know, common occurrence. But there's sometimes we can save you that and hundreds more by not going down a hole that we've heard from too many people is not a hole you want to go down. A certain place. Yeah. Yeah, I like it. You know, Bronson, I'll put you on the spot a little bit. So we've talked about in tougher years, you go hunt antelope, sheep, goats, moose, stuff, goose deer, stags, whatever, right? And so you're doing that. And now I'm looking at you thinking you're amazingly brilliant because I'm so stuck on mule deer or whatever that I can't get out of that mode.

And so my spendable income for the hunting season is going towards stuff that I'm still trying to wish and find and doesn't really exist. And you've got bigger, better, smarter plans. What are those? Well, I don't know about smarter, but yeah, I got sucked in again. I guess we'll just keep it up. It's as simple as I can put it. I love spending other people's money. And I had to sell, I had to sell land or tax. I know, I know. I love it. The deer, you know, I'm not. The reason why I joke and say I'm playing a lot of golf right now and scouting a little, it's my Utah general and I'm not in Nevada. Like I know I have been the last two years crushing the place and I know exactly everything that's going on and I have a little bit of time, but yeah, I got suckered in. And I say that in tongue in cheek, of course, because it's not too hard to twist my arm to get me interested in a sheep hunt.

But yeah. Hit the shiny lure. Yeah, I hit it. I hit it hard. Shape of a sheep. Not very long ago. It was only a month or six weeks ago, I guess, whatever. So yeah, I'm down to short time. Remember, that's part of the reason I'm not doing this. Cleanse is a soft word for it, but we're not. It's a purge. It's of epic proportions. I'm not doing that when I'm already leaning out from training and I don't need to go into that frail and weak. Yeah. I'm going up on a big boy hunt. And I need, I don't, I need a little grease on me, you know. Well, that's a good time with Ty. So you're going up. We're going to be stone sheep hunt. He's home. We're going to go up there and hunt fanned sheep. Pretty awesome. See what we can bring home. So I'm kind of been, kind of been planning. Had it in the back of my mind for a few years, two, three years, obviously.

So did a sheep hunt with him three, what, yeah, three years ago. Yeah. And, you know, he's been gone for a couple of years. So I don't know. Just kind of happened. I didn't, again, this was a spur of the moment, Bill. But opportunity fell in my lap. And him meaning Ty. Did a sheep hunt with Ty. Yeah. Did one with Ty. And so now that he's back and hunting. Now he's back. Yes. Yes. You know, it elevates it, frankly. I mean, I don't need to do another sheep hunt for me. You do things with the kids you would never. Yeah. So. It's easy to justify about anything for kids. Yeah. It is. Or with kids. Or memories. Or whatever. It's also easier to argue it with your wife. There's not even. You know, I'm spending time with the kids, you know. I mean, if. Let's just say this. Becky kicks in money for the trip. Yeah. Oh, yeah. How much more do you need? Yeah. Exactly. Here we go.

If Ashley, Sean, Justin, Colton want anything. And it kind of goes along with what I want. Yeah. I mean. It's happening. It's not even a sale. It's not. I'll be like. Sean will be like, hey, dad, let's go do this. And I'm like, yeah, you probably ought to run it by your mom if you can get it figured out. Hey, mom, we're going to go do this. Really? Hey, I wasn't going to be back. You know what I mean? It's awesome. Yeah. Yeah, it is. And like. Hearts are in the right place. Yeah. Yeah. It's fun. It's about good times, good memories. I've got, you know, Jason, John, I, we all crested 50. So, you know, sheep punts and things like that. Or, you know, I don't need to do any more thin horn hunts myself necessarily. But if you're going to do one with Ty, then now it's the time. Better now than 10 years from now. Yeah. Yeah. And you got me all warm and fuzzy.

So, if you're debating whether to have a kid or not, man, get it coming. What? Yeah. What? You're talking about people putting kids out on the ground? People that, yeah. Get your kids. If you're like, oh, I'm going to wait forever. No. There's nothing better. Nothing better than having kids. Get them out on the ground. Yeah. Get them growing. I got texts from Ty this morning. He was treed by sheep dogs on the mountain this morning. Was he? Oh, dude. They're no joke. I gave him a pin in the dark last night. I'm falling asleep because I'm going. I give him pins. He drove right to open his door. And he's in the middle of a herd of sheep in the pitch black. Oh, yeah. And he gets his stuff, starts hiking, and then the dogs start coming. And they're no joke. They're like those, you know, three and a half, four footers. They're no joke. And he stuck with it and outran them and got free. He did?

Yeah. Got away from them. Got away from the sheep. I've often wondered, like, do you ever have to dump one? Like, you never want to do that. No. But if it was me and that, I would probably just say, I'm going to a different spot. I'm getting back in my truck and I'm moving. But I didn't give him a plan B. This is the spot. Was he by himself? All by himself. Oh, jeez. He's a man. Those dogs scare anyone. Then he gets up there in the glassy knob and kicks a hornet's nest and has a swarm of them falling for 45 minutes. He did? Yeah. Right at the right of the exact spot I told him to sit. Oh, my God. Did he see anything? Nothing to report. Oh, okay. He saw some deer, but nothing. All right. Yeah. But anyway. 35 inches worth of shanks or nothing? A lot of big, wide shanks. You don't know what they're going to turn out to be, but he said they were actually tipping down. Come on. No.

I just was waiting for Jason to lose it.

I got it so big. I don't think he said, I don't know how you'd hold it. Take a picture of that. Marveling and little bumps and bruises. The pearly. That's what it talks about. No, just kidding. It's fun times hunting with your kids and family. You know, I grew up hunting with my dad and brother. And, you know, just nice to have kids now that like to do that. They don't have to. They don't have to. Just because you hunt doesn't mean your kids like to hunt. But, you know, most of us are lucky here, us three, to have our kids like to do that. Nothing better. Yeah. So, yeah.
