All right, Bronson, where are we going with today's podcast? We got some rain out there. Of course, Devin's forecasting small animals are gonna die, right? Well, they're saying something. It's raining. It is. It's raining out there. And, Cash, you've got some, what, hail on the screen? Yeah. I opened up a thought. What mountain range is that? Tosher? No. Pain? It's Josh's hometown. What's that plateau? Where's the Aquarius? Is that the boulder? I think it's Marcagon. Marcagon? I think it's Marcagon.

Marcagon. Boulders, yeah. Alright, we're getting very deep in the weeds, right out of the gate. Josh, what's your cellular telling you? Is it snowing or hailing? Yeah, well, the one pond the one's on looked like it was getting some aggressive hail. Josh, how's your scouting going? Good. To and from work, is it alright? Yeah. Pretty legit. Yeah. The cottontail numbers are up, I noticed. He can't say too much because there's only two highways from Penguins to Cedar. I know. Everybody will know what he said. One of two spots. I go through Hilldale. Drives a canabin around. I take Highway 9. You're going through one of our units, one way or another. Doesn't matter if you go around through St. George, come through Pine Valley, on over to Pennell. Apple Valley is beautiful. Of course, anywhere but the sandwich unit. All right, where are we going with this?

Well, I don't know. Don't look at me. I'm just here. Okay. Devin, you're getting prepped, right? You're getting prepped to take off? Yeah, I started packing last night. Devin's bearded. That first pack, like the first time of the year. Are you packing Heli Hansen gear, or what are you packing? Rain gear? Rubberized rain gear. Definitely rain gear. Definitely. Taking those fancy frog dogs we got.

I'm taking those little boot fans. Yeah, I need those. Your beard looks like it's a mid-November beard right now. It's mid-July. I know. But you're gonna keep it. It'd be gone, but I may need it. For survival. When you're the North Pole. Keep your neck warm. Okay. Okay. Well, you guys might have an adventure to talk about. It'll be great. Yeah, we'll have a story when we come back. Heading up to Alaska, right? Yep. Heading up there, doing good things. Of course, Bronson, you're gonna be heading out. Sea ducks and It's a ling, Todd, right? Something like that, they tell me. Yeah. Bronson, you got a family trip headed out? Yeah. Let's do a family trip. Sightseeing trip, probably. The rest of us here are gonna be scouting, right? Trying to come up with big deer, maybe big bulls, bucks and bulls and billies and whatever else, right? That's right. I'm leaving. I'm leaving the country, too.

What? Yeah. Yeah, I got roped into a family vacation, so. When? Next week? What? Is this on the calendar? I've told you about it. You can't go. Okay. What do you got? You don't have to pull my arm very hard. Do you want us to tell you you can't go? Sure. Where are we going? Can't go. Oh, wow. I guess. I don't know. I'm just there. You're gonna be trafficked. Are you healed up? Probably. A guy like you and a beard like yours? Be careful, man. Are you healed up yet after that race and that? No, I'm good. The mosquito bites you got? You a vector? I've still got the mosquito bites. You might be a vector carrying some kind of a disease. Let's hear a little bit about the finale of the...

A little race you got in. I could go do it again this weekend, no problem. Really? I've done it once. It's easy. Okay. He's young, Devin. Go ahead, Cash. This is so easy. No, it's not that easy. So, how'd this go down? You guys showed up? This is last weekend. Last weekend, well, let's back up. Three weekends before last weekend, Devin walks over to my office and says, you're going. We'd been talking about you. And I've only invited, we had this on the podcast. Yeah. I've only, I have only invited you. Yeah.

My whole life, I've never invited anybody to you. Yep, come to find out why it's never been invited, apparently, according to him. Of course. Let's say why it was invited. Yeah, he acts all offended. Come on, come on. You invite him to lunch and he won't go. Yeah. Usually he goes. He goes. But no, Devin walks in my office and said, crap or get off the pot. And I said, okay, I guess we're signing up for this Spartan beast. And I'd never done it before, three weeks in advance and start training and we went and did it and we didn't die. You did in that three weeks, though, before getting to you. I could probably add it up. Probably. How about you knocking on 100? Probably a markup. No, I'd say probably 75. Probably knocking on 100. Probably a markup. 75% of the way. Yeah. It's good. So, then what? Devin had to show you up and do the other two races.

Yeah. Without me there, so I couldn't. Without you there? I'm just trusting him. Well, he is trusting that he did it, right? Yeah. He is roughly 10 years your senior, and he had to tell you. Everything gets easier the older you get. It does. It's easier the older you get. I have the tracks to prove it. It was fun. It was fun though. It surprises you when you grab the 60 pound bag, and there's like guys that are way more jacked than fatty me, and you just cook past them. You know what that's for? It's a glorious feeling, because you're packing meat. You're just like, I got meat on my back. You just walk. What's that from? Close your mouth. Close your mouth. You're about dying when you walk by them. Yeah. Make sure that you're not even breathing. Yeah. So, just packing all that milk out, man, our whole lives. Just packing a quarter, and you're good to go.

It's funny, because, yeah, like, I'm not the strongest guy. No. You got these big dudes, like, this is their life. Me and Cash throw on something over our shoulder. The bucket. No joke. Like, that was easy. Yeah. That one was easy. It was. It's not easy. No, no, no. Easy considering. We didn't take seven breaks. No, we took one. How far did you get a pathway? Kind of like when I went to the shooting course. Yeah, you're just like... I'm the least likely guy to win. Yes, and I'm, you know, a little hairy guy. I'm just a feller. Walked him with a sandbag on my back. Yeah. It was fun. Makes you feel good about yourself. Spanish Fort Dawns are built different, bro. Built different, bro. State Champs 06. So now what? Since this. Oh, my gosh. What? It's true. Look it up. I believe it. 5A. Oh, my gosh. I believe it. Okay. So what's next?

Since this was so easy for y'all. It wasn't easy. I'm never doing it again. What's next? I'm not doing all three ever again. Cash, you witnessed the finale, the Archibald finale. You helped him over the logs. I did. All the obstacles. I don't know that I ever helped him. Devon's an animal. Sometimes he likes to sit around and sniff the roses. It would surprise you. Did I fail any obstacles? Sometimes he likes to sniff the roses all the way through. I don't think so. Did we attempt it? I don't think so. Did Cash? Yes. When you hit your arm just right and it goes numb, you just call it a quits and you just do the penalty. You just cut your losses there and do the rest of them. Okay. You're pretty wise. It's good to know you can do that. Yeah. What was our race? It was 14 miles? 14.4. And it was... They... I remember...

Red on their side is like just shy of 5,000 feet, but Onyx claims there's only 3,800 feet. Yeah, that's what mine says, 3,800 elevation. About, I don't know. One of them is accurate. That's a good test. It's a good jog. For a sheep hunt or something. And then, Devin, finish that out. You guys get done with that, then what do you do? I did 12 the next day. For what? And another 3,100 feet. With other members of your family? Yeah, two more races, one with my brother. You just took on some freshies and went on and kept crushing. Did you even change your pulse?

Yeah, I changed every time. You got to. You have to when you go through that mud bog. You should have seen Cash. Oh, man. It was pretty disgusting. It's pretty, like, you go through the, like, you're in the last mile, and you go through a mud bog, you have to go underneath all the water, and it's, it's, it's mud water. It's disgusting. It's usually not that disgusting. You're 50th in line to go through it. Yeah. 50th? Try, like, 5,000th. Yeah. We're in the back of the pack, you know. It's like, it was gross. It's like October 15th, El Coalo. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. So, do you guys have athlete's feet all over your body? Oh, I... That's what I'm talking about. I sprayed my feet with alcohol, and I go home. This is what I'm talking about. You going to Mexico, you're definitely a vector for something you're taking down there. You just don't know why. I don't know. I don't know.

I don't even know what I'm doing. If you're not traffic, you're gonna get sick. I probably will. So, if I die, I die. So, next year, now that Archibald's out... No, I die. I'll do it again. I'm just not doing all three. Whatever the two days. Oh, I was thinking you should pick up Logie Bearer as your next. Logie could do it, if he started now. I only started three weeks before. So, we have a friendly... Come on, Shane. You guys bash each other nonstop. Yeah. Logan comes right in. You suck. Oh, it's like... I'd break your arm with a stroke of a finger. Well, I could. Logan forgets the day that he had been going to the gym very consistently, and I hadn't been in months, and I pinned his hand to the table pretty easy.

He forgets that day often, so I have to remind him. Yeah, but you had like two years of arm wrestle training from a professional. Like what? I never went to a professional. You told me, you said, I worked with the guy who did all these tricks and all these arm wrestling competitions. He taught me. Well, Logan, you have AI. Yeah. AI it. It'll teach you. I should have. I don't need to prove it. You're speaking in past tense. We're talking about the future. You know when you're glassing a herd of elk, and the rut's like full swing, and there's like two spikes just over here?

They're doing their thing. Sparring? Yeah, sparring. That'd be Cash and Logan. I'm at least a rag. I've got four points. You've got a rough time. Or two. You're definitely a legal bull. I'm legal bull. Logan, not so sure. I'm four. He's still in velvet. A little bit of velvet. Yeah. I'm four. Hold his velvet until the end of October. Stag! Teddy's rubbing hard. It's soft when I scratch. I like it. Geez. Alright, alright, how do we transition to something better than this? I'm trying to get back into hunting related. Alright, so take us back into hunting. No, I just was saying. Oh, you talked about elk wallows, reckoning things to elk wallows. It's two spikes over there sparring in the corner while everything else is going on. Alright, so let's move along here. So, where are we at, Bronson, on things? We're cranking off the hunting season.

We're gathering up trail cameras like it's our job. At least the cards for a minute are going to be gathering up. At least the ones that you know are, might as well get started on some of them right now. Yeah. The ones that haven't produced in a month already, and they have no deer, and it's, you know. Which is how. Dry as a bone. I'm not talking about a mountain unit. I'm talking about a desert area. So frustrating, some of my favorite places are just my favorite places. The deer don't like them. I don't, you know what I mean? I'm like, man, I'm the only camera here. The water is amazing. It looks like there's a track or two. It's probably a giant. What is it? An antelope? Oh, no. Oh, it's the smallest bucks you've ever seen. I pictured Logan and Cash, maybe at 10 years old. You know what I mean? Come on, I'm squirt. You still got spots, buddy.

It was the smallest bucks ever, and then the water dried up and there was nothing. It was like, and it was hard on stuff to get there. It's hard on a side-by-side. I ended up taking Justin's Tacoma in there once. I mean, it was hard on it. Really hard. Just those kind of things. Like, you think, man, it's gonna be awesome, and it's not. Man, I'm the only one here that's gonna be amazing. Well, it's not. There's one water that's really cool. It's like a cellar, and then the water's at the entrance, and I'm the only camera on it, and it's loaded. It's loaded with small bucks. Huh. Like, no good bucks. Just, ugh. That's kind of what's out there. Yeah, it feels that way. A lot of places. That's what's out there. I know.

One to threes. Why is that? Do we need to recap why that is? No, that's... Hey, we're having a positive... Right? We talked about this, Josh. Lots of small bucks. Yeah. You know? Yeah. One out of every 15 bucks, there's a four pointer, whatever. Maybe. Yeah. Ish. Yeah. So... Yeah, I went and pulled three or four of mine last weekend that just weren't doing much, because you kind of got to start getting going on it if you have stuff coming up, or had, you know, a whole herd of cows kind of move on, and I'm not going to do anything.

I was just over that. Cattle? Yep. Yeah, cattle. Yeah, or cows come in, and just kind of sick of seeing it over that. Filling up a car in four days? Yeah, and it wasn't really worth what was getting there before. Anyway, now I got some sheep coming in. That was one thing I used to do. Domestic sheep. I would say, yeah, in some of the areas where, I don't know, I guess you could say back in the heyday or whatever, I kind of kept track of when the cow, where the cows were, and I was just over that. When they were on the years they were sort of thing, because a lot of times they'll end up moving pastures, you know. So, it's like, so I'd kind of try and plan my trail camera stuff around that, but like, okay, this year I got to put my cameras heavy over here, because actually the cows aren't going to be in this pasture. For no rhyme or reason, that one's void this year.

Yeah, and then this year, and then next year I'd kind of move them over to this other side and try and be in some deer's loop just to avoid the cows and stuff. What do you think causes that? What do you mean? Like, just the inconsistencies from year to year. Oh, just the way the ranges work? Yeah. They have on and off units throughout. I mean, I find in the desert a lot of times, like, I've got the same box. You know what I mean? But they're, but up in the mountain, the more mountainous country, like, there's some inconsistencies. Although your dad's got some inconsistencies in the desert. Yeah. Compared to when we were there, or compared to last month versus this month, or whatever, right? They just come out of the middle of nowhere, and you would think they would be pounding it all somewhere.

Right. But there's movement. Yeah, just the oddballs that show up and then move in. It was pretty interesting. Even more so with elk. Like, you get a bull 15 miles away across the valley. I mean, deer though, you feel like in a desert-y, dry area, and there's no other good waters. You get them, you get one third a month. Like, and there's been no rain. No, there's no puddles. You've kind of got them. Might as well start pulling some of those, Clark. I'm just saving you some time. Next week, I'm just saving you some time. It was pretty interesting though. I had a camera. I haven't had it up since. It was up here on Pengwich Lake, and there was the Brian Head Fire, 80,000 acres, you know, giant fire changed basically the entire unit and how a lot of things, how the animals use the unit really. And I used to run a

camera. It was kind of in this saddle, and it was in a really thick, just timber on both sides, but it was this open kind of saddle where they could come out and feed, or I think they were just moving through it a lot to go down to water on either side, and then they'd kind of come up there to bed I had during the day or whatever, but they would just cross through the saddle a bunch. And I haven't had that camera up since after the fire, and that was 2017, I think it was. Anyway, I went and put that camera up this year just to see, you know, just something new. Like, see if there's something new, what's still in there, whatever. It went up in there. And it used to get hit pretty hard with bulls, especially early. And I got a picture of one bull on it is all. And there's like a little herd of about 20 cow elk and calves in there.

That was the only thing. They're just kind of hanging right there, you know. And so, it's just crazy how it changed. Something like that significantly changes, because now they don't have to use that saddle. They can walk any open hillside or whatever, you know. There's not thick timber they can't get through. No. And they're augering their way through it. They're learning it. Yeah. As if it's new country, too. Yep. Yep. So, it was kind of crazy. You can... So, sometimes you'll run into a situation like that, where you'll have a camera that used to be amazing that's not worth putting up anymore from something like that. Well, I'm just happy to report that the pride of lions continue to be happy. Yeah, but you've, they've added, well, you missed one the first time. You thought there was three, there's actually four.

Yeah, I thought there was three, there was four. At least. I think that's all that I can fit in a camera screen. Who knows what's beyond the lens. Yeah, who knows what's on the peripheral. Yeah, got old Jefe out in the brush, old Papa, out there just watching his domain. It's disgusting, and the one water that has the big tom that's got ear tags in both ears, and he's an awesome cat, and you have a lot of respect for him, but he's just eating us out of the house and all. I mean, it's just killing us. You don't get ear tags for just being a nice nice kitty. So, what did I do? Supported the Division of Wildlife. Bought a tag for no reason. What if you walked up? $104? What was that? Yeah, plus or minus. Whatever they charge you.

Did you get a spike tag today that went on sale? No. Can't buy one if you already got one. You can only have one. Yeah. How about y'all? I acquired one. Spikes for spikes? I have not yet. I'm out. All right. Okay, Devin, you don't have a lot to contribute. I guess you've run a few less cameras this year. Yeah. Just the way things are lining up, right? It's not lining up good for me. Well, you're lining up good for me. It's coming up amazing, actually. Well, it'll be great, but not for running cameras. Right. Just the different hunts for this year for you. Yeah, the way it is. You got a whole new lineup, right? Yep. Do you want to quickly run through that? Because it feels like you have an enviable hunting schedule. I'm envious. I'm envious. You know, Alaska, Utah, I have no, I don't have cameras out,

because I won't be here when we have to pull them. Yeah, that's really unfortunate, that part. I told you a polo. You're gonna have four or five. I don't want to make you do that. Some of them you gotta ride a janky four-wheeler. What does it matter? 109 versus... You ain't getting a truck to it, man. Okay, I'm out. Yeah, I know. That's what I'm saying. It's not fun. Devon, I'd walk 100 miles for your cats. It'd be a full day for you. And that wouldn't be... Devon, when you put your hunting future in 48 or 9 states in the fate of somebody else while you're... Oh, I missed one. ...5,000 miles from here or wherever you're going. Camera number nine, for some reason I couldn't find it. I only got 11. And he's crushing self-picks the whole time he's gone to Alaska. Yeah, that's... I ain't risking that. Not happening. I know. You lose your hunting license for 48 days.

What it's gonna take is just more... it's just gonna be more days, mornings and nights, and more glass. Yeah. I know. Which sometimes I think like... It's better. Some of the bucks I get... We think... we mentally think we get everything with cameras, and you do. On a mountain, you have a chance. Some bucks will hit one water, like in a rotation, once a month. And we only got two months, really, to identify what they are. And I'm like... And then you start glassing, and you see the tracks, and you see different little places they can get water. I'm like, ah, if I would have known, I could have been looking on this side the whole time. Yeah, I had a lion move a deer, but I didn't know about this water. And so then, and then when I learned about the water the next year, and then the deer was on that new water that I didn't know about,

The next year, I'm like, man, if I'd have known then what I know now, you know what I mean? You haven't had a tag there since, probably. Yeah, I haven't had a tag since, but it makes you, it irks you bad. Yeah. I know last year, I was tasked to maybe collect a camera or two for somebody that had a limited entry deer tag that was gone to Alaska or something. I think it seems like that did happen. I considered just walking up and turning them in and walking away. I remember that. I just found a camera right here on this limited entry unit.

Mr. Bronson, here's a ticket for 43 cameras. Luckily, I recorded the conversation and the affirmation that yes, those will be down by the 31st. I do remember that. I remember the very specific instructions. I'll bet if you look at my in-reach log, I in-reached him on the 31st to say, confirm, are they down yes or no? There was confirmation. See? I mean, I know how to protect myself. Oh, that's funny. You never know. Your friends are the ones that are going to take you down. At that point, when I left...

Nobody's your friend, Bronson. At that point, they were Josh's cameras. I laid the foundation. Josh, I hereby give you these cameras July 30th. And we found the most amazing- 11pm. We found the most amazing 300 inch tag, and he wouldn't shoot it. Oh, it was amazing. Remember that? He didn't even hunt it. Yeah. It was amazing. I was like, why not? Why wouldn't you do that? I'd kill bucks just for their eye guards. And it had like 45 on each side. It did. It did. It might should have, but it just got through.

Did you guys hear that thunder? You can probably hear that. Let's move along before we lose power. Throw a little Clark Brooks right there. All right, so, thunder rolls. So, as we get cranking here, okay, as we get cranking here, let's talk to an archery deer hunter. Last year, Travis and Erica Taylor, husband-wife combo, went out and smashed a couple great bucks. I'd just like to hear the story verbally and throw it out here on the podcast. Super good people. Are they both going to get on? I don't think so. I don't know, though. I don't know what his schedule's like. He's just, he's like, hit me up. Alright, here we go. Be fun getting one of the others perspective on it. It would be. But then, sometimes you mess with marriages. So, we'll let them deal with who's gonna rat who out and what happened.

Hello? Hey, are you pulled over? Are you at a place you can talk for a minute? Yeah, I can talk for a minute. Nice, all right. Well, we just kind of wanted to, with the archery deer hunt coming up and whatnot, we just thought maybe it'd be good to have you guys on, So, we're going to turn it on, or you on, and kind of tell your story. It was pretty awesome. Rare do you get a husband-wife team do what you guys did. Yeah. Pretty awesome. All right. Thanks. So, for those of you listening, we've got Travis Taylor. Travis and Eric Taylor's story was featured in the Epic Outdoors magazine April, the Nevada issue, and just slammed a couple of great bucks archery-wise. And, of course, it's somewhat of a tough year. I mean, it wasn't a phenomenal year. It wasn't bad, but it sure wasn't easy. So, anyway, just kind of to set the stage for what we're talking about.

All right. Do you want the long story, or do you want a short version? Maybe in the middle, and don't leave out any of the good stuff. Okay. Alright. Well, yeah, we drew the tags. We put in as a group and got super lucky and drew the tags. I mean, really lucky. We should not have drawn them. Was this on a group application or just set a group application? Yeah, it was the day before I changed my choices and decided to do a group with her. Sounds like something Jason would do at the last minute. What do you mean? Well, I mean, how many times do you amend your Nevada application? 10 or 15. Well, it's free and it's fun. Yeah, so don't question. That's right. Anyway. I'm the same way. I change it. So, my brother would be like, what'd you put in for? And I'm like, I don't remember where I'm at right now. I don't know where I landed. 27 Archery. Who knows? Yeah. Terrible tag. All right.

But yeah, so we shouldn't have drawn the tags, but we did and got super lucky and just started pounding with cameras. And I don't have a lot of cameras, but my brothers and my nephew, they all helped me out doing a bunch. And I put cameras out pretty much anywhere I like to hunt and a few other places. And like you said, it wasn't a great year. There wasn't a whole lot of great bucks. But I got a picture of my buck on June 20th, and he was, you know, you couldn't tell what he was yet, but he was wide and heavy, and I was already kind of crazy about him. And so, I spent a lot of time looking for him, and I never found him scouting. I never saw him one time until opening day.

So, if it's July 17th, and we don't have a buck that we're crazy about, and you had a buck you were crazy about June 20th, we probably don't have a buck to hunt. Yeah, yeah, maybe. But a buck you're crazy about is like 220 plus. No, no. Your guys' bucks would do just fine. But yeah, so, and then there was a drop-time buck on the same water that Erica was crazy about. Yeah. And so, we ran ourselves ragged looking for him, and never found him. And then, opening morning, we were spread out through there, and we were the only ones there. It was just me and her and my brother Jason and a buddy were all there. And before it was even light enough to see, really, Eric had called me on the radio, and she was all frantic. I thought she must have sat on a rattlesnake or something. Just the voice, you know, but she was like, I got two bucks, and I'm pretty sure one of them is Valhalla.

We named him Valhalla because I was listening to a song called Valhalla Calling the first time we went to look for him. Okay. Is that good music? What kind of music is that? He sings that. It's like Viking rock. Oh, but it is. You know? Josh is over here. Have you listened to that? No, I know what Valhalla means. Oh, okay. Josh is just over here grinning like, yeah, Josh, that's my stuff. His eyes are rolling back in his head. All right. Yeah, sorry. Sorry, sorry. No, I just told her, I said, well, that buck is calling me, so I'm gonna call him Valhalla. Okay. So, anyway, she said, I'm pretty sure one of these bucks is Valhalla. So, anyway, make a long story, medium. I put a stalk on him that morning, and I got pretty close, but just before I was able to poke my head out to where I'd have a shot, the wind shifted and he bolted and didn't see him again that day.

And, let's see, so the first, and we could only hunt weekends. We couldn't get a lot of time off work and stuff. We'd maybe get a Friday or a Monday off and get a three-day weekend. So, that first weekend, we actually saw the drop-time buck also that first day, but it was too late to make a stock. So, we had to go back to work, and I had heard that some other people were going to be in there looking for that buck. And so, I was just watching Instagram all week, hoping I didn't see a picture of him. Yeah. But we went back out on Thursday evening, and actually Thursday evening, my wife put a stalk on the drop-time buck, and she got about 80 yards from him, but just ran out of light and I couldn't have enough time. So, the next morning, there was people everywhere in there, it seemed like. There was people all over.

So, we were pretty discouraged. Come to find out, it was just one outfitter, and they had one hunter and three guides, I think, all spread out through there. And so, I was discouraged, definitely. And then, about an hour into glassing, I found six bucks just traveling through a wash. Yeah. And I couldn't tell what they were. They went into a little wash, and so, I figured they were going to pop up over a little ridge. So, I was just watching for them, and sure enough, they popped up, and I could tell instantly that Valhalla and the drop-time buck were both in the group. And so, now I was like panicking because they were in the sunlight, in the open, just kind of milling around, feeding a little bit. And so, I was scared to death these other guys were gonna see them, you know.

And so, I'm watching them, but I have my wife standing between me and the guy that could see me, so he doesn't know that I'm looking in only one spot. And she keeps looking over at him, and he's looking all around, but I don't know if he's trying to... He's doing the same thing we're doing, you know, like they've seen them, but don't want to draw attention to where they're at. So, I didn't know what to do. Finally, they dropped down in the wash. I knew they were going to bed down, and we waited a while, and eventually I'm like, well, I don't think these guys have seen him, because the one guy was kind of packing up, looked like he was going to leave. So, we just decided we were going to see what we could do. Yeah. So, we got eyes on all of them bedded down in the wash, or in that little canyon,

And my buck was down below the rest of them. Him and he was always with this one 3x4. Those two were down lower than the rest of them. And so, I wasn't really confident because I wanted to come from above them, but those other bucks were all above them. So, I just decided I'm going to try and go in the bottom of the wash and see what happens. Luckily, there was this one big boulder that blocked their view of the bottom of the wash. So, the whole time I'm traveling up through there, they couldn't see me. And so, I took my time, and I took my boots off, and had my little moccasins on, and just worked my way up in there. And I got to where I was 55 yards, and now I could see the right side of his rack sticking up. And so, I just would slowly take like a half a step to my right every few minutes. And I could see, now I could see both sides of his rack. I can see the top of his back.

But there was one little bush that blocked his face so he couldn't see me. It was just crazy lucky, you know? Yeah. And so, I stood there in the sun on the rocks with my bow. I mean, I had an arrow knocked and my release hooked on everything for, I don't know, at least an hour and a half. I was just standing there. And finally, they got up and kind of moved a few steps, and I drew back and shot him. And I didn't know, I felt pretty good about the shot, but I didn't really know where I hit him or how good I hit him. And he took off running, and I just sent another one, trying to anchor him, you know. And then he ran a ways, and I could see he stopped. I could just see him over this one tree, and his ears were drooping, and he was hunched over. I knew he was hurting. And my wife and my little brother were watching. They couldn't see me, but they could see the deer.

And I had my earpiece in with my radio, and they're trying to tell me, but I wasn't really listening to them. I didn't know how good I hit them, and they're trying to tell me, like, hey, you hit him good, just wait, he's gonna die. But I just had tunnel vision, I guess. And it was kind of static-y, I'd have to kind of work to hear it. But, anyway, so I run up on the side of the wash where I could see him, and I was like 85 yards at that point, and he didn't move. So, I knew he was hurting, so I was going to take the time to range him again and get a good shot. So, I ranged him, and I had my sight dialed to 88 yards. So, when I ranged him and he was at 85, I didn't adjust it. I'm like, oh, that's close enough. And so, I shot again, and I just hit, like, the very top of his back. Like, it went right in between the little, his spine, but not, you know, didn't hit his spinal cord.

Just in the void or whatever. Yeah. Mm-hmm. And so, then he turned and started going up the hill, and he just, he stopped, and he just started doing the death wobble. And I thought he was gonna go down, and I was like, oh, awesome. And then the frickin' tough sucker just kept walking. And he went out of my sight, but not very far. And they watched him bed down. And so, at that point, I was very dehydrated. I hadn't had water for hours, and it was hot. So, I asked my wife, can you come bring me my pack and some water? So, while she's on her way to me, my little brother gets me on the radio. He's like, hey, he's up. And I was like, you've got to be kidding me. I thought, sure, he's, you know, dead by now. And he walked like five feet and just nosedived into the ravine. And then he couldn't see him, but he was pretty sure he died.

So, anyway, once Erica got to me, we walked up there, and he was dead. He was wedged in between some rocks. And it was awesome. I mean, it was... I've never been able to kill a buck that I had on camera and had that much history with. And so, it was special. That's hunting, you know? Yeah, it was so cool to finally get my hands on him and touch his hook cheater. It was awesome. Yeah. That's awesome. Well, now it's her turn. What happened then? Yeah, so then we went out. The next part of it, at least just reading the story, was like, I don't want to say it's a gift, but it was meant to be. You know what I mean? Yeah. So, we kept hunting for the drop-time buck, and she was dead set on the drop-time buck. And she's only killed one deer before in her life, and never with anything with a bow.

So, I'm thinking she's going to start lowering her standards a little bit, because there was some other decent bucks we were seeing, but every time she's like, nope, nope, I just want the drop time buck. And so, it was the next weekend, we saw the buck that she killed Saturday morning, and she saw him, and I didn't even look at him through the vinyl. She was looking at him, and she's like, nah, his forks suck, I don't want him. So, I'm like, alright.

And then later that day, she told me something about his eye guards. He had awesome eye guards. And I was like, wait a minute, you're telling me it's that one with the crazy eye guards? She's like, yeah, but his forks suck. And I was like, holy crap. Like, I was willing to hunt the whole season only for Valhalla and go home empty handed. But I've killed a lot more deer. You know, I thought for sure she would be willing to settle, especially when it was a pretty sweet buck. Anyway, we hunted the whole weekend, couldn't find the drop-time buck. So, Sunday evening, she decided she wanted to go try and find that eye guard buck again. And so, she called me on the radio about 6.30, 6 or 6.30, something, I don't know, late in the evening. And she's like, oh, you want to come over here and help me kill this eye guard buck?

And I was like, yeah, if you're down, you know, I didn't want... I felt like maybe she was settling because I couldn't believe that she didn't want to kill him before. But she was like, no, I'm watching, and he's pretty impressive. I think I want to try. So, she told me where to go so I could get eyes on him, and then she just started working her way towards him. And I was like, there's no way she's gonna get to him in time. She's got a long way to go, and it's getting close to dark. And then that buck, he just stopped feeding and just started traveling down the wash straight towards her. It was crazy. Like you said, it was like a gift. It was just meant to be. Oh, crazy. And so, I lost her because I was only watching the deer because I didn't want to lose him. But I told her on the radio, I said, you guys got to be getting close to each other.

And so, she started looking around, and then she saw his antlers coming over the little rise in the wash at like 50 yards. So, she starts fumbling with her release, and she was so nervous and excited, she could not get it hooked on to her D-loop. And it took her a little while to get it hooked on, and by the time she did, the deer was only 20 yards away. Jeez. And it went right behind, yeah, just still coming right, almost straight towards her. It was just kind of quartering two, and it went behind a big cedar tree. And so, by the time it walked out from the cedar tree, it was at 10 yards. And it had no idea she was there. And she's at full draw now. So, she just put the pins on him and smoked him. And then he about smoked her. He about ran her over. She had to jump out of the way and wave her arms to keep from getting run over.

And so, I came down to where she was, and she was just, I mean, she was shaking and just the adrenaline flowing, you know. It was pretty funny, to be honest. But we couldn't find any blood. We found one splotch of blood, and that was it. Eventually, we found him, and the arrow was stuck in him, so I don't know if it just plugged up the hole or what. Plugged up the hole, yeah. That's crazy. Yeah, but he didn't go very far. When I was up watching, I lost him, but I could hear him, and I thought he went on this one side hill, and then he stopped running. I thought I heard him go down. So, we searched on that side hill forever until our headlamps were going dead. And then, we went home, and we were pretty bummed out. She was pretty upset. And I'm starting to think maybe the shot was a little further back. It's a quarter and two, so if it's not right at the shoulder, it might be gut shot.

And anyway, the next day, we searched for a few hours. We were gridding that whole hillside, and I went back up on the point I was on the night before just to glass and see if I could find him, you know, see if I could see his antlers sticking up or something. And I was walking back down to the road after a while, and I looked up, and he was just dead like 25 yards across the road. Jeez. And he hadn't gone far from the night before. It was just a different direction than I thought I heard, so we never really checked there. And he was dead. She was so excited. It was pretty special, especially both of them were over 30 wide and over 40 inches of mass. So, it was pretty cool.

Yeah, that's gonna be hard to duplicate right there. Yeah, really hard. No matter, just drawing tags together. I can't get over the eye guards. Like, how long are those eye guards? How much of an eye guard is on that deer? Oh, man. Like, four and a half inches on the one side, on the one eye guard. Yeah, yeah, on the one, and then the other side, he had double. Four. I can't remember now. I think it was like 10 inches of eye guards at least. Yeah. 12, easy. I can't remember now. I remember thinking if my buck had those eye guards, he'd be 200. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Well, yeah. That makes up for a little bit of weak forks. Yeah, exactly. I mean, look at that deer. The deer is awesome. She was like, holy cow, I can't believe I didn't want to shoot him yesterday. Well, we've been in that country, and it just like reliving

it the way you were talking about, and they just killing it. The whole kill scene, it just, you can't have enough of those kill scenes. Yeah. We need to do this all the time. Devin, I'm with you. I mean... Just draw a tag on the snap of a finger. Yeah, we need to do this. How are we gonna do this more often? That's got to be more than 10 inches. Yeah, but what's a... Yeah, probably. I can't remember. Yeah. Well, it's just, I mean, two great bucks. I mean, just stud bucks, husband-wife combo. Pretty awesome story. Just fun. Kind of gets you charged up. Geez. Yeah, it does. So... What do you look forward to this year? No one didn't draw out? Any big game or just sage-grouse? My son has a youth tag. Oh, there you go. And so, he's never hunted with a bow before, but he's getting it this year. So, we're gonna try it out, see if we can get lucky a second year in a row.

Oh, cool. Awesome. I mean, in his area, he can still hunt all three seasons, you know, but we found a pretty nice buck that he wants to try. I mean, nothing crazy big, but he's actually kind of similar to my buck. He's got a hook cheater. We definitely don't, we have definitely not found bucks that we need to kill. These guys are talking about cheaters. That's not a revelation that I didn't already know. Are you seeing good antler growth out there overall? I mean, I've only seen a couple that got me excited, you know. And on camera, I don't really have anything very big. All right. Well, that's awesome. Just drawing tags together, and then, geez, punching two 30-inchers. Both. That is awesome. Husband and wife. Pretty freaking cool. Yeah, it was special. Well, pretty fun. And I, for one, am excited about it. Wyatt, he's the one that convinced me to do it, wasted my application fee so far. May end up wasting it. Hey, you guys only have like 14 days to We need to buy those tags or whatever. We need to convene. Maybe just give Wyatt a quick call. You know, see if he's in or not. He was in the back of his truck, chilling out, watching the passerbys get stuck in the sand. Yeah. I love it. He did have some pretty strict instructions to maybe take a spotter and post up while he was down there. Oh, good. So, hopefully that's what he was doing. Hopefully he did. Not watching the beach with the spotter, but watching other things. Yeah, that'd be a little weird. Oh, dang it. I was looking forward to that. But anyway, it just prompted me. You gotta start with, like Devin said, 30 inchers.

And if you can't get that, you gotta at least start with two dudes drawing the same tag. And you and Wyatt got them. Like, let's make a memory. It's really hard right now. Hey, these guys, however this family, this Trish, or Erica and Travis did it, that is hard to duplicate. Like I said, talking to them, go try doing that again. It's really hard. They did well. Did a lot of work, a lot of preparation, but for that to come together, we all know what killing big deer or the bull takes. Not easy. Yeah, I don't know. I just talk, and not to change the subject on that though, you know, We've talked about antler growth in general, and we had some predictions earlier this year of what might be one way or another and such. I don't know. Some deer, it's hard. It's so hard to tell right now

because deer sometimes grow quite late. Sometimes, you know. They grow a lot late, meaning a lot of inches late. Yeah, so you never know. But overall, I would say, you know, we talked a lot about elk and maybe having a lack of winter. You know, talking down here in southern Utah, central, southern Utah in general, but a little bit of a lack of winter, those bulls not having to go fight through snow and stuff all winter. It seemed like the elk really started growing early fast and got big fast. I mean, there were a lot of bulls that you could tell what they were going to be. First of June. Yeah, they were big. Yeah, they were big. By mid-June, there were a lot of bulls that only had an inch or two on their beams and fifth or something left to go. Like, it was pretty crazy to see. And with that, you know, the mountain, the top of the mountain stuff greened up really fast.

So, they were on green grass from the day they shed their antlers this year. It's essentially from where if they were lower and stuff and shed and on top. And they look really good this year, the elk do. So, I don't know, something to think about in your application strategy stuff, kind of trying to keep in mind, maybe more quote-unquote drought type years or maybe not a lot of snow type years might be a year you want to look at for elk in general. I think in general we figured deer would be average at best, but not phenomenal. I mean, I don't... Feels like we're spot on. Nobody said. Feels like...we've just seen... Sometimes you get surprised, but it feels like there was no way this was going to be a surprisingly incredible deer year. Just too dry throughout the fall and winter. It's good to winter well,

but they also just take a lot longer, it feels like, to have their body condition in good shape Before they grow, or elk, they bark. I mean, they can live on... Pine needles. Literally, they can feed on... I mean, it feels like elk and coyotes will live anywhere, and yeah, good condition is even better. But man, like I said, they wintered easy, and they roamed wherever they want, and then we started getting rain the first of March until June, which is exactly when you need it for elk. Yeah, we had some crazy moisture right there. We don't normally get. Yep. All right, Devin, lead us off. Lead us off. What are we doing on Monday again? Well, we're gonna side in all of our rifles. Cash is like, are you guys going? We're gonna do it. Did we say Monday or Tuesday? We were thinking more like Tuesday. That's right. But I hate to say it out there, because somebody

Yeah, Bronson butted in line. No, I didn't. No, I was about the sixth and seventh gun of the day. He handed him into the room and left. He came back to pick him up. He just knows D&J's gun shots are amazing. That's the most physical labor I've done in a minute. What do you mean? It was brutal. You guys just did a Spartan, a super Spartan or whatever they called. It was so, it's just different. It's different, bro. It was just hard. It's hard, because you want them perfect.

How late are you guys gonna be out there? We're gonna be out there until the job's done this time. Okay, this is what I think I'm gonna do whenever we're going, because we're not announcing that here. This is at the Beaver County Municipal Shooting Range. That's right. Beaver County. Which is out in the brush. I'm gonna golf nine holes, and then I'll be up there, and I'll be the last one to shoot. Okay. When you guys have everything dialed. By that time, it's whipping 12. All I gotta do is shoot at 100 yards. And he'll be like, this isn't grouping very good. 100 yards. That's all I'm doing. We'll let you know. We're gonna have a pile of fierce All these rifles out there, though. I just talked to a member today. He's going to the shooting school September 1. Oh, awesome. Yeah, he's excited. Cash is a big fan of doing that. He likes to just throw out a bedroll and sleep until he's going the next day. I did, and I got eaten alive. So, you drove up to this Spartan Super Spartan or whatever. I just threw my bedroll in. Pulled up there at what, 10 or 11 at night? Yeah, about 10 o'clock or so. Pulled up, I was like... I threw your bedroll out, and then you got woken up a couple hours. He looked like, yeah. Turns out, you were in a watershed area, no camping. Yeah, no camping. In a parking lot. Who knew you couldn't sleep in the parking lot? Who knew? Looked like you had the chicken fox the next day. Who knew? So, I went and found a different spot. Where bugs were? Oh, hold on. Wyatt's calling.

Well, it's just we were talking, we had a good podcast, or these days, husband and wife had a pair of mule deer tags in Nevada, killed a couple 30 inches of the bow, and we're just talking about like the rarity to have two good tags, let alone husband and wife, but even just two buddies. And then it dawned on me, I know two buddies with two tags together, same time, and you guys could do something like that. We could do that, Wyatt, you and I. Yeah, two booners with their bows? Yeah, yeah. P and Y. Did he say booner? I think it's like a 68 inch adlump. What's P and Y minimum? Yeah, that's what we're talking about, P and Y, I guess. Is it 68 inches as well? Is it even 60? Maybe it's even 50. I don't know what it is for sure, but it's not big. Hey, chat that real quick. I think it's easy to do.

Chat GPT, PNY minimum for pronghorn. PNY minimum pronghorn. I don't know why 68 sticks in my head. If it's 68, that might be a little too significant. Does it even need a prong to get to 67 or 8 inches? It could be a yearling spike. Well, I mean, I don't know. It seems like about any antelope buck. Didn't we decide it was 67? Yep, 67. Wow, Wyatt. Wyatt's looked into it. 15 inches smaller than a rifle. Hey, there's even an example of one there. That one looks pretty good. He's been 80 inches for awards and 82 for all time. Did that turn his crank? I don't know if he was. I don't know if he was 80 plus-ers. Well, the 67, I'm just saying. Did I say 80 plus? What? What did you say about 80 plus? I said I think we're going to have a hard time digging an 80-plus up. Oh, Jason perked up there for a minute. That's kind of like saying 200.

I thought I heard weeding through 80 inches is what I heard. We're going to spend a grand or two to get there and back. It better be something significant. Well, we're bringing back the best meat on the planet. Devin's already got the donation slip ready for you guys to sign. Just drop them off on Archibald's porch. Yeah, they better be on ice, Wyatt. And they better die quick. And they better not have run. And it takes you more than three arrows and a few hours to kill him. I'm out. It definitely changes the chemistry. It doesn't die within 30 seconds after the shot. You'll never know the full story. You'll just have him on your porch. Wyatt's is going to be amazing eating. I will be out of town, man.
