EP 389: Upcoming Draw Deadlines, and an Epic Q&A

Hey everybody, Jason Carter out of Bronson, John Peterson, Devin, and Logie Bear. How are you? I'm doing good. Have you ever watched Barney in the day? I don't think so. You did too. Barney the dinosaur? Yeah, the purple dinosaur. You know. I do know. You know. I've heard of him. I went to the Barney convention. I've got trauma for that. That tells me a lot, Devin. That was your era. A little bit. Wait, what is the Barney convention? What did they do there? There was a stage. Barney was there. There was activities. That's about all I remember. Devin's got trauma, and there's reasons why. I can sing songs. I'll bet you I would freak you out how many songs I have verbatim. Hit us with one. No, not. Bronson. I love you. You love me. I love you. That's the gimme. My wife and I will break out singing them once in a while. We're going to tell you, what are we doing? Come on. All right. Okay.

All right. Somebody will say a weird line that's like one of those. It's like, when you have two daughters that pretty much worship that show. Or DJ, Baby Bob, Barney, all the freaking people. I mean, gee.

Devin, they're 23 and 27 years old. I'm kind of concerned that you're about 10 years older than that. You were developed. Devin was a late bloomer. We didn't have. You were enveloped in that. You were like a teenager. He had a full-grown beard watching this stuff.

That's kind of worried. They ID'd me at the convention. Oh, man. I don't really remember a lot of that. Oh, man. All right. Whatever. I don't know where we're going with that. Whatever we got with that. All right, Brownson. So here we are. We're at the end of a major grind. An application grind. Yep. We got a few results coming out, which kind of keeps us going. But the application process and all of the questions that come with it, it's pretty fun. There's a lot going on. There's a lot of schedules to work around. People are calling in. Women, children. I've got adults in three different states right now for family members. I've got guys asking me if the antelope horn girl is good enough to go ahead and apply in Wyoming. And I'm like, hey, everybody tells me it's a year to go. I don't need to drive there, and the answer is yes. I don't need to go look for my own eyes. Right.

It's going to be fine. Right. It's probably going to be fine. Oh, what do you mean? Let's say there's a drought in Wyoming. I mean, the desert floor is 7,000 feet. That's right. And they don't. It's not the same thing as deer now can't let grow. They shed those things in November, December. I saw a full-grown buck today. I mean, a full-grown buck. No. Four-point? Antelope. Oh. Yeah. Ash is like, what the heck? He never shed. And I'm like, no. He's grown. That's new growth. What does that tell you? About done. They're getting there. Wow. What do you think? I don't know. What does it tell me? Yeah. Scouting. Scouting for antelope. No, it's good enough. It's good enough. Yeah. Apply, apply, apply. Yeah. But anyway, kind of fun. There's been a lot going on. So anyway, Bronson, let's rattle off these application deadlines real quick. Just that people should be aware of. Weighing these out.

It's the last hurrah here right away in the next, what, two weeks? Yeah, pretty much. Rattle them off, Jason. What do you want to start? All right. Well, we've got Washington. Well, Washington's because it's our fave. They added a week to their deadline. Why did they do that? They said it because of the postmarking of their mailing and distribution of their regs. It's more along the lines of the two-factor authentication. Three-step factors. Yeah. Garbage. Retinal scan when you log in. I'm going to make sure it's true. DNA test. Of course, Logan didn't know all about that.

I do not recall.

Good one, Logan. He's quick. We're proud of you. We like to have a little fun around here. Anyway, all right. So then we've got Montana antelope. Ronson, did you get your app in? June 1. No. It's a big deal. I told you guys. Hey, you're the one that wants to do the group hunt up there. No. Devin, would you drive to Montana for an antelope? I probably would ride along with somebody. You would do a ride along. Yeah. Like I'm in charge of making sure the oil is full at every rest stop. Yeah. I'll wash the windshield. Something like that. I don't want to do one. I said I will never do one. Yeah. And if he's driving, you would uncase the sandwich and hand it to him. Whatever you need. Yeah. This doesn't feel like the year to do that. It doesn't. It doesn't. To clarify my group status, I will not go there without a group of people. All right. June 1st, we've got Wyoming deer antelope deadline.

Pretty exciting about that. Actually, we've got a lot of questions. A lot. A lot of those. A lot of people are wondering. And I know a lot of people are waiting right now on Colorado and Nevada results. But you're only going to have it like a day. Nevada's going to be next Friday, folks. You know, Colorado's going to trickle out, you know, deer, elk, antelope, bear, moose, four days next week. All the things. So, yeah. If you draw Colorado or Nevada, we want to hear from you, by the way. Yeah. Call in. Yeah. Yeah. You're going to need to call us. You're going to need to make quick plans for that Monday, June 1st deadline. Also resident elk in Wyoming, same day. But the next day, California. California. In Arizona. Hey, it's exciting. I mean, geez. Arizona sheep, deer, bison. And the bison would be basically points only unless you want a cow-calf or something like that. Fall turkey.

Designated. Turkey point. Pheasant. That'd be good. Is there any sand-tailed crane stuff on there? Is that OTC? I don't know. I had somebody call me about that. It's not OTC. Is that in this draw? They don't do OTC cranes. Tells you how waterfowl fluent I am. Well, I mean, California kills some of these crazy birds OTC right now, but not Arizona. All right. Then we've got Idaho deer elk antelope. We've got June 5th. That's exciting as well. Iowa, June 7th. And then on down the chain. Then we start getting into points in late June and July. Well, that's a lot. That's a flurry. And a lot of results to follow some of those afterwards in this next 30 days. Devin, what would you say? We hear people, you know, yesterday, I think it was yesterday, was the Wyoming. Moose, sheep, goat, bison, elk, non-resident elk results came out.

And, you know, hearing from a lot of people and plants are getting squeezed. But I'm also feeling like some people are taking their time on deciding on whether they should be booking outfitters. I've heard of that. And I've also heard on the other end of things. And people, you know, decide in two weeks and then call back their dates or two weeks later than they would have been had they booked the first few days. So it's. Meaning they didn't have as many choices because they wouldn't. Oh, yeah. You can't come opening day now. You can come two weeks into the hunt. Yeah. Right. You know. Flexible season. Which may or may not. But I would say, too, as the years go on, like, it feels as though people really have planned it better. Yeah. Knowing they're going to draw or have a chance. The problem is, is like in Wyoming. Nevada either though. And a squared state like Nevada. Yeah. Montana.

Nevada are just. They're gifts. You kind of don't know. They're just gifts. Yeah. Unless you're going to do archery deer in the center of the state. But the state. Where nobody wants to go. Yeah. The state you do know. You better have a plan. Colorado. And I think people are better. I think we're better. Everybody's better at predicting when they're going to draw and making plans. Yeah. They are. But. But I will say like a Nevada especially because. Like elk in Nevada. That's a one or two in your life. Oh, you just take it when you get it. I mean, you better jump on. You better be willing to jump on stuff. Yeah. In my opinion in Nevada. Because those hunts are what? Two weeks long. The late rifle is about two weeks roughly. Early and late. I mean, so you don't get the first week. Now you're the second week. And, you know, that's fine. But you don't have a lot of time to think about it.

If you jump on it, you have choices. Well, and something to think about with Wyoming deer and antelope is you can't amend.

Tell the first.

Oh, yeah. Not like the elk. Just until the application deadline. That's true. Which is fine. I can't. But I guess if you're in now and you draw Nevada. Oh, yeah. Yeah, you can amend. If you draw Nevada, Colorado, and your schedule's toast. Anything that happens next week, which Colorado could be. You never know. There's some surprises that happen in Colorado. Moose would be a surprise. But as far as, like, deer, there's some people that are like, I'm out on the fence. And then they happen to get it. Draw three points or something. Yeah, exactly. There's some force that all of a sudden take a nose dive. You know, guys go from 11 to 6 really easy because there's just a couple of non-resident tags. And so just a couple of people dropping out changes everything. So anyway, yeah, you could, Devin. You could amend. Well, these are so tight. There is going to be some.

You know what's crazy about Wyoming? It feels like there was big deer killed throughout the entire city. There was. There was a lot of good deer. I mean, just look at our May magazine. It was well distributed for the mule deer species. Antelope and mule deer. Yeah. It was. It was a showcase. It's kind of fun. Bucks, bucks, bucks. Bucks, bucks, bucks. Pretty fun. Anyway, you might have to play that if you can ever find it again. I don't know. It's on our YouTube. Oh, no kidding. There you go. Play that. Bucks, bucks, bucks. I love hearing that, by the way. Logan, write that down. Okay. Play it every morning. So, what else is going on? I don't know. I mean, that's it. That's all that's going on. We're getting people applied. We're making plans for people in their last states. It's a busy, for being what you usually. Kind of the end of the application season. It's a busy part.

Yeah, it's really busy. It's pretty fun, though. Yep. Arizona gets, you know, it's just busy applying five or six people in your own family in Arizona. That's busy. Takes an afternoon.

It does. Well, it does. And it shouldn't. It does. But come on. It doesn't. We're beating a dead horse there. That system. But whatever. Anyways. Speaking of dead horses.

Sean's out in the hills, shed hunting Nevada. Oh, yeah. Legally. That's where this is going. Legally. He's out walking around, and he's got a dog, a drawthard. Those dogs that, I don't know. Somebody's going to correct me on how to pronounce it. Anyway, a bird dog. But he's always hunting. This dog is always hunting. He hunts lizards. He hunts people. He hunts everything. I mean everything. Anyway, I guess all of a sudden, he's over there just barking under a tree like crazy. Sean's like, what is going on? Sean kind of trudges over there, and then some other critter darts off. Critter? Like what? Something moving. Like a second lion. Like another lion. Really? Yeah. And anyway, he walks up over this tree, and this dog's got a lion in a tree. And could you imagine Kenai, his dog? First time he's ever seen a lion. That's the biggest house cat I've ever seen. Oh, yeah.

Anyway, tried climbing the tree, got himself caught in the crotch of the tree, sitting there, spun out, waiting for Sean. Anyway, kind of fun. And that's all instinct. That's just incredible. Just instinct. But a lot of fun. But it didn't have a tag, so you can't smash it. But it was on a horse kill? So, yeah, it came off of a horse kill, turns out. Full? Yeah. I've heard people argue they don't do that, but. It's not true. Oh, kill horses? Oh, yeah. I don't think it would go after a full girl. Some of them, especially. Oh, there's an outfitter that killed a collared lion, and they were like, man, you killed the horse killer. That one ate only horses. That one ate only horses. Wow. I mean, it's. I love those lions. I mean, right? It doesn't. Yeah, that's. Help us help you. Which ones are those? You know what I mean? Avoid this area. But anyway, kind of fun.

Ash smashed a turkey this morning, John, which was way fun. Just awesome. John, you've got wildlife in your backyard. Oh, yeah. I was just telling these guys, I get video, and we've got a fox that keeps coming back every year and having her babies in the rock pile. Boulder pile. Yeah, in the boulder pile. And she has the audacity to scream at you, and she's in your backyard and keeps coming back. Does she ever scream at you, or is she okay with you guys? No, she's great. She will scream at night sometimes when other things are around, that's for sure. Yeah. You know, but no, she's fine. She is. She's a gray fox. Are you guys feeding her? So you can't do anything else. No. I've told them, no. She can provide for them herself just fine. So she does. You lost any chickens or house cats? No. She leaves the chickens alone. She doesn't even mess with them. What? Wow. Yeah.

No, but she's got squirrel in her mouth in one of the videos. Oh, really? Yeah. Have you set up a trail camera on her, Dan? No. But we can see her from the kitchen window. Just watch her. When you say she came back, she's not there all the time? No. That's just like her. I mean, the exact day a year later. And so I looked at photos from last year on May 22nd. That's when she brought the – we've seen her for like – The pups emerged. Yeah. We've seen her for like a week and a half now. And pups came out same day, two years in a row, exact same day. That's kind of crazy. Just that aligned. Yeah. There's like five of them. I saw a den of four on the golf course. We've seen them the last couple weeks. Red foxes. Pups. No kidding. Yeah. Those are legal. Yeah. You can smash and grab with their rifles.

It's good. You should. Where's Ty? I'm busy right now. I'm busy golfing. We should put that thought in Ty's head. He would be relentless on Adam. They're not even – I mean, they – I'm going to take the golf cart tonight. They hit the garbage cans on the holes at night. I mean, they're like – they're tame. I mean, it would be like anticlimactic. Thermal. Yeah. On the golf course. In Adam's golf cart. Yeah. You'd have to have an air rifle, though.

All right. Moving right along. Wait. What? Hmm. The turkey. What turkey? You just blew right by. Well, I mean, it was awesome. I mean – Called in some hens, dragging a gobbler. Had them at five feet. The doe was at five feet. She came in. I don't – she needs to mind her own business. Ashley blew her deardrums out. She did? Oh, yeah. I had to. She had you pegged. Knew you weren't a real turkey. Leading out both ears. I mean, yeah. She had us pegged. Like, she came in, and I'm like, this deer's coming in. You know, and then the hens are screwing around, and I'm calling back, and we're calling back and forth, and the hens are screwing around. And I'm like, I can hear him drumming, but you can't see him because he's over a lip. And I'm like, how long are they going to hang around? And anyway, finally got him right up to where we can barely first see his head.

That doe, I mean, stiff legs, it stops, and he puts his head up. I'm like, kill him. I mean, it was over. Gig was totally up. But that doe, imagine five feet. Five yards. Well, or whatever. Yeah. She's right there. 12-gauge goes off right in your face. Not just a 12-gauge. Point it the other way. Three and a half turkeys. 75-yarders. I mean. She's not going to hear her fawns whelping. That's going to say she'd probably put her into labor. Maybe she'll. Percussion. Maybe she'll mind her own business. I mean, she about blew it for us. Yeah. So anyway, just an awesome morning. Just an absolute awesome morning. But all right, so we're moving along here. What else do we got? Let's have an app update or an update on the app maybe. Anything new, Logan? We've had some. We had a bunch of beta testers in the app over the past few weeks. It's been going really good. Some really good feedback.

Some really good upgrades. A lot of just minor changes. People seem pretty happy with the way the odds are displayed. The way you can search minimum points query. There's mapping on everything so you can see what units you're eligible for based on last year's draw data. Yeah, there's a polling from our archives back in whenever Epic was started. I mean, we're polling pictures from all the way back then and it's just random. Trophy of the day. Today it happens to be Mark Dixon, Tule elk from California. Big old freaking sucker. Geez. And there's always a little story attached with those. You can heart it, save it. Anyway, it's going really good. If you don't heart it, John, you're telling me that thing disappears? Yeah, you never see it again. So you're forcing people to heart stuff? Yeah.

Let's say you've got a soft spot for Colorado Mule Deer and you want to keep a little archive of those. You better heart the one you heart. They stay around. What if I'm sick today and I don't open the app? You've got to check your app every day. Does it disappear in 24 hours like Instagram? Every 24 hours it cycles. You guys are causing addictions. You're going to force people to open this app. Yes. John has been collecting them like Pokemon cards. He gets competitive. He's like, I got more than anybody. I got more than anybody. They call those streaks. Yeah. Yeah. I got a streak. He's showing me his library. I haven't missed a day since we started. What is it? A streak on what? Snapchat. Snapchat. Snapchat streak. What? We're asking that, Logan. A streak. The epic streak. That causes people a lot of stress. You guys are speaking Chinese. It does. You know, it's going really good.

The app's looking great. We send each other a whatever, a little snap each day. Blank picture. And it's like, it's a streak. Don't break the streak. Send me another one. I reply. Right? Yeah. What's the streak? Isn't that what it is? That is. That's what it is. Do you have any streaks with girls? I don't even use Snapchat anymore. I'm too old for Snapchat. Proud of you, Logan. What's the, are we going back to MySpace? You're now a man. Get my number out. How do you do it now? How do you do it now? Digits only. It's a new age. If you're not snapping, what do you do? My number. Give my number. Oh, straight up? Yeah. Phone number. When are you going to go back to talking to them? Calling them? Just talking to them. I liked. Oh, in person? Yeah. I'm good. We don't do that.

I'll talk to her face to face on the wedding day. How about that? Oh, man. Hey, I will say, I read something the other day. I'm glad it's real people because I think they say one in seven adults has an AI companion. What? What does that mean? Even full-grown men. Yes. Oh. What? An AI will be your friend. And the AI knows everything about a wife. Like an AI girlfriend? Yeah. A companion. Or just a talk. That's relationship. Basically, it's whatever you want it to be. It's everyone who's a real person in your life. And they talk back to you. AI talks back to you. It's who they talk to and vent to. In your phone? Whatever you do. Like, I don't even use Siri. But a version of Siri that is an AI version that you can talk all your hopes and dreams. It's a companion in one way, shape, form, however you. So how do you in theory get one of those? I don't even know how. It's an app. It's an app.

There's also a new one that'll generate Snapchats and send it to you like you're Snapchatting your girlfriend. And it's like she's taking a selfie and a little caption. Oh, my gosh. It's messed up. So, you know, you're really a jerk if your AI companion dumps you. Yeah. At that point, I can't deal with you anymore. You're incompatible. You're beyond help. Please start a new chat. No wonder there's all these stats about people. You know, the marriage age is going to 30-something. And then, you know, such and such percentage think they never will and don't need to. Because they got whatever they call it. AI companions. Yeah. Wow. That's the best word they can come up with. You've never heard that before? No. I've never heard that before either. Well, we talked about it a while ago. But I didn't know it had an app. And it was literally like that. That thing. Like that.

I just thought, you know, like the Siri. I don't even use Siri. Like Siri calls somebody. I don't even do that. Me neither. So I just assumed it was something like that. Just a little bit. Someone on your phone helped. No, this is a full-blown. People are in relationships. Yeah. Yeah. This is status. So anyways, Logan, yeah. You want to know where there's none of that weird stuff? Why do you say that, Jason? I don't know. I'm with you. Yeah, why not? I think 13A has giant bucks, but 13B has more huntable country and more legit solid bucks. That's just a gut feel. I don't know. What do you think, Bronson? I like the later dates, too, and 13A. Yeah, it is good. I like that, too. Yeah, it is good. So, anyway, there you go. But. 50-50 shot. Who knows? That we're right. Yep. Yep. The owl could stay in the park. Who knows? There's a lot of rain. Who knows? You know? You just don't know. Okay. All right. Moving on. JWC Hunts asks, how's that new Zeiss Opia 65? It's awesome. We've sold a few. I've used it for a couple of days. It is awesome. Before they came out. You know what I can't believe about that scope? It's a 65-millimeter objective. It feels like a 55. It feels little. Yeah. Yeah, when you hold it, you're like, there's no way the diameter is 65. It's compact.

I took it out. The pop can. I put it in my pack and took it out. Yeah. Incredible. Super light. Didn't even know it was there. And it's affordable. Yeah. Super cheap. Yeah. Considering what it is. In its class. Super cheap. Yeah. No question. At its price point, it can't be beat. I don't think it can be beat. It's pretty impressive. Definitely a scope to look at. If anybody wants to buy one, give us a holler, but they're awesome. Got them in stock on the shelf ready to go. They're angled only right now. They're going to come out straight later from what I understand. If they have enough demand. Yeah. Seems like it. I mean, I think demand should be off the charts. Exactly. Devin, you like an angled scope. Tell me, Ray. I do remember going from the straight scope to an angled doe. It kicked my butt for a while. It probably cost you great big yellow school bus sized elk out there. You can't find them. For a week or two. It was hard. So why did you swap over? It's just what I bought was angled back then. And I wanted to be cool like everybody else. Not me. Have that nice scope and that's what I got. Jason and I want to be retro. I've been crooked ever since. Do you guys use that little boar cider on the front of a spotting scope? No. On the angled one, it's useful. I use it on my angle all the time. I never even. I always look at that and I'm like.

I just open my other eye and look at the mountain and line it up. I'm so used to the angle. It's just like as if it was a straight scope. Yeah. We don't need it. I don't know how to explain it. That's wild. I started using it more last year and it's pretty helpful. So on a truck window mount, you're looking forward and it's kicking out to the side and that's normal to you. That's cool. You just rotate a little. That is harder. I've got something else I could sell you. It's sideways. It's called an ICUC. Do you want to buy one of those too? I can't believe that company really made money on that. All right. All right. Anyway. Next. Brody Bell 4. If I want to start applying my kids, what are some good states to start with? Colorado. Nevada. Nevada. Wyoming. Arizona has a cheap hunting license for kids. Be careful on Nevada and Arizona because after 8 to 10 years, because you can put in

10 in Arizona and by the time they get 18, they're going to have a loyalty, maybe 100 ahead. They got you by the throat. In Arizona? You can't quit because you've got 8 or 10 points. And then it hits real funny. I did it. And you're, okay, it's my family, Bronson. Is that me? I'm speaking for experience. I mean, I had five hunting licenses. Nevada and Arizona. 160 piece. Yeah. And I had five of them the other day. 155 in Nevada plus, plus, plus. And I'm making them valid on June 2nd so I can get a potential twofer because next year it'll be valid on June 1st and that's when the deer apple to be due. But it's, it causes me stress. Yeah. Yeah. And I think all three of us, all of our kids are over 18. I can't apply them until June 2nd because it has to be valid the day I apply them plus valid on the deadline day. So I made them valid for June 2nd. I went through and did them all.

Well, 160 times five. Okay. And then I did all the $100 point fees. You guys have heard this 100 times. Now you've got to wait and apply all six of you for three species on deadline day. On deadline day. With the server. And remember the afternoon I talked about? The full afternoon. The server that's just furring like a kitten. I know. All day long. That server better not go down or Carter's going to be on. Like, hey, hey. It'll be bad. What'd they call it? The T1 connection? Just wait till I... That dial connection that was fast? I need a T1. Just do it in the middle of the night. Actually, we've got Starlink. Do it at like 1230 at night or earlier, earlier in the morning? Yeah. Wake up at night. On Arizona time, though. Yeah. Wake up at night. Because could you imagine? Oh, yeah. That's true. Oh, it's 1153, Mr. Carter. It was not valid when you applied. I mean, set it for 1 a.m.

It was just adults, right? That's the change. I'm sure it was just adults.

But the fun thing about the kids, I've had multiple family trips. Oh, yeah. With all of us having tags, deer and antelope alike. It is that kind of a state. You can draw generals. You can draw an easy-draw antelope or whatever and really get Dad of the Year award. You know what I mean? That's a great state. Colorado's a great state for the whole family. What's their license? A dollar and 32 cents or some nice round number. It depends on the index. Consumer Price Index is published in the Denver Post on April 1st. But anyway, anyway. Who are such a piece that way? It is nice. But then again, once you become – and also to get that – it's the cheap – you know, for getting points for sheep, goat, and mish. They don't charge you. Nothing for kids. So, yeah. So, you can get those first three initial points that are required. And then after that, just be applied. Maybe three more, maybe.

And so, they'll get three and three or three and four, depending on how – if your kids – And then just apply them and opt out of that fee in the future, you know, as adults. I don't know. Because if you wait too long in some of the states, you're going to come to it and you're not going to be able to apply and get their hunter ed done. We have a lot of parents that do that. They're not used to it back east. It'll hold you up. Even do an Idaho online course or something. Yeah, get it done. But a lot of people forget and then they're trying to get it done within the deadline of first time Arizona elk gets 12 years old on February 3rd.

And they're like, I can't get it done. Yeah. Be aware of that. I like it. All right. Moving right along. Dilstein. Huh? Dilstein is the Instagram name.

Are you concerned with mule deer populations across the west and what can we do to help? Yes. We always need more. I don't know how we can talk about this without getting in deep bushes. Deep dives. Deep dives and deep dark. The problem is there's people out there that think Utah DWR is doing the best they've ever done. Literally. Literally. You know. And so it's hard. There's a lot of varying opinions. Mule deer need help. Good grief. They need help, don't they? And some things, we've talked about this, Bronson, sometimes you do have to pray for rain. Sometimes it's not. When we have wet years, you know, things are better. There's quite a few young bucks out on the landscape right now here in Utah. Pine Valley has a lot of small bucks on the landscape. Panguitch Lake has a lot of small bucks on the landscape. I mean, you know, they do. And so anyway, mature bucks is another story.

And you can mix that. Go ahead, Bronson. Mix what? Mature bucks versus numbers versus management versus all the things. Yeah, I think the guy's question was about numbers. But it just goes to show that I don't know if you could say any state's figured it out, doing it right. Because no state are they doing better than they were five and ten years ago. Yeah, and no state's saying we're really happy at where we're at. Some feel like that. Maybe our own at times. Feel like, yeah, we're making great progress. Yeah. Some people say that. Where are we going? Take us there, Bronson. No, I'm just saying. Some people feel like we're making progress towards that. Whatever they envision, you know, a good forecast to be. I mean, whether it's just keeping people hunting. Tags. More tags. Keeping people hunting. More tags. Keeping the tradition alive. You know, what are all the buzzwords?

There's leftover tags. There are a lot of leftover tags. Yeah. Utah. Keep printing more, though. There'll just be more leftover tags. Yeah, print more of them. Right? Print more boulder muzzleloader tags. All right. So, let's wrap it up before we go. So, the answer is, yeah, what can be done? I mean, like Jason said, we do need consistent winter and spring moisture. There's no question that drives trends. We're also seeing other things coming out, a lot of research. You know, yeah, when your deer herds get low and predators, you know, take a bigger percentage of the lower numbers. We're seeing that in some of these studies, you know, even in Utah, things like that. That may be a controversial subject all on its own. But other places, it's winter loss and winter range. It's not that way in southern Utah. So, it's different in a lot of different places. But it's widespread west wide.

A lot of people say they'd rather have a winter loss than a drought. So, droughts are hard on things. Winter losses are hard on things, too. And, by the way, I haven't said anything, but there's Game and Fish. A Game and Fish agency is smashing does like it's their job. And I know the butcher that they're bringing them to. And it's just rough. It's rough because you've got landowner depredations. And instead of just telling them, look, you can't shoot the wildlife or we're going to write you tickets and at some point you're a felon or whatever, they go and smash them. But don't get me started down that road. But that's happening down right now. I know. Right now. I'll be out there planting bug brush. Pregnant does. Maybe tomorrow for my dedicated hunter. Yeah. Dead animal pit. No, I'm just saying. Like, we do so much.

But then in the night on some guy's pivot, we just bow down 50, 60 does. Makes me sick. Yeah. All right. Kay. Next up, Matthew 5. Antler growth forecast. The new app. And who's going to kill the biggest buck this year? I'm assuming these are things he wants to hear about. What was the first one? What was the first part? Antler growth forecast. I think elk are going to be amazing. I do too. Does anybody think that? And I guess, I don't know about all of Arizona, New Mexico, but I'm going to say Nevada, Utah. It'll be pretty good. I think they're going to be amazing. We've had just a light winter, which bulls love light winters. They can winter wherever they want. We had such a wet October, November. It greened up everywhere. They could have whatever they wanted all winter long. And just enough spring storms to keep limping this green along. Don't you think, Devin?

I don't know if it's going to stretch long enough for the deer to fully, before it just cooks. We're getting really lucky that we got warm in March here in Nevada, Utah. And then it's been kind of cold and stormy. And then even the next 10 days, it's not even going to hit 80 degrees around here. It feels like years past this time of year, it is an 80s. Yeah. We go from winter to a quicksick. I just got a text from a buddy of mine in Nevada. It's raining. Yeah. Right now. So I think we're limping these. I think it's going to be good. I don't think it's going to be terrible. Let's put that. Deer, even deer in these states we're talking. Nevada, northern Arizona, Utah. I think, yeah, growth will be good. We'll just see what kind of age is out there. Decent to good. Yeah. And I think elk are going to be really good. It'll be awesome. It's kind of fun.

It's hard to talk west wide, you know, in terms of the eastern plains of Colorado and eastern Montana, which I do watch closely. They've got a good storm yesterday. Why would you watch that, Adam? One of the many places that I'm interested in.

But general deer going to the 31st. It does that 23rd to 31st. Everyone smile. That's when you kill them all. You can. That's when you kill all the good ones. Kill all the two-year-olds. Especially some places if it snows. If it snows two feet somewhere or something. There's been times. I know. And you can't forget them. Yeah. So, his question was whether to wait. Wait. 27 or 28. Assuming the late dates came in 28. Just do it 2027. They come in 27. That's when the late dates come in. They're the latest next year. They'll just creep forward a day or two in 28. All right. Next question. What big changes in Western hunting do you see over the coming five to ten years? I think some of the biggest we've been seeing it. I mean, I guess we're just talking about fees, Jason. I mean, we're talking about certain states. Yeah, but I think technology, I think also these states are limiting technology really fast. Well, that's already happened, I think. Yeah. I don't know if that's coming. I think it's pretty much. But anybody that has it is going to. You know what I mean? I feel like there's just a big push for that. Yeah, but there's so few left. I wouldn't call that big. But I just think, yeah, you're going to have to really prioritize some of these states that are increasing fees. You know, Wyoming's just coming out with some of that. It's going to increase that. You know, we've seen it in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico raise their fees.

Further limits on non-resident tax. Yeah, so they might reduce, there's some squawking about that and getting ready to maybe attack on the guy, draw a pool. In New Mexico. Yeah, New Mexico. So you're just, you're going to have to prioritize more perhaps for most people instead of just, yeah, I'll do everything. Maybe some cross the threshold of making sense. I think we've already crossed that on, you know, Washington, Oregon, California for non-residents for the most part. Some just don't make sense. They don't even make sense. They don't pencil out. But, yeah, probably. Devin, can you think of any major? My mind went straight to where you guys did. Fees. Yeah. That was the first place my mind went. Fees and availability. Mm-hmm. Just have to, that goes back to what you're saying, Jason. Like, our kids are not kids anymore in terms of under 18.

And, yeah, it's $1,000 a year to put them in an Arizona, or family in Arizona, Nevada. Nevada's no joke. And you talk five or six of you? No. That's $200 plus? $200? Bro. You can't get out of there with the $200 in Nevada. You're $1,200. $250. If you do anything extra? Not even doing the Silver State and all that. My own dad apps, they're blowing way through 300. I guess you could just do the non, in Nevada you could do the non-point option forever. You could. Have what you have, what? You could. Let's think of six. There's been guys that have drawn one. For the rest of ever, I guess. If you have the points, don't start applying there. That would be like the proverbial doing things in the wind.

Don't start applying in for Nevada and just, hey, I'm going to draw sheep, play for sheep, deer, elk, all those. Pay app fees and not build points. Like, that's. Yeah, don't do that. But you. If you had eight or ten or fifteen. While we're sitting where we're at, you could be like. You might just do it until you draw. Let's talk about desert sheep. Give me another five points. What's the difference? Yeah. Nothing. Literally. You can't. Literally. You can't quantify it. Decimal. It's a couple. Yeah. It's a. Can't move the decimal anymore. So. Yeah. And, yet, you're still in a pro version. You know what I mean? So, you've still got that little bit bigger 50mm objective. And, uh. Double batteries. Yeah. Double batteries. Yep. Anyway. So, yeah. It's pretty awesome. Just interesting. When you get a younger hunter buying something like that, you know it's good. Yeah. You're in your 20s. It's a bigger financial commitment than it is in your 60s. Than the old man. You know what I mean? Yeah. And so. But, yeah. He was like.

He was sitting there in a chair of glass of barbara. And I just. I can picture it right now. He's sitting in the chair. Wasn't even on a tripod. Didn't even have his elbows locked. No. Nothing. And he's got tripod. He's got tripod minos. The whole thing. Swarro. Swarro. Yeah. Fifteens. No. He was over there with the stabilizer. And, I mean. On the way home, he's like. They're no joke, man. They are no joke. And it's true. It's pretty impressive. Especially at the price point. They're a great tool. They are. So. But, anyway. We've got everything you need. John, do you remember when I crushed you a little bit because you had a muzzleloader loaded for a full year and you didn't shoot it and clean it? Yes. Mine's still loaded. Come on. Hey, there we go. Dude, it stares at me when I go home. I cleaned out all my gear room. That took four hours. There's the gun sitting there ready to go and shoot it. Devin, how pitted is the barrel? You might have problems. No, I don't. No way. But, John, I apologize. I did the same thing. Sometimes you just don't have time. You got women and children that need stuff. Dadline. Is that D-A-D-L-Y-F-E? You know how people get all cute with it? Yeah. All right, Devin. Keep going. What was I saying? Well, just what we had. Oh, yeah.

And the one new thing they came out with that we actually have ordered a bunch of is the new muzzle brake. And it's a side port. And if you've ever shot a muzzle door, you imagine the smoke. Yeah. Kind of interesting. Yeah. Meaning it's kicked out to the side. To the side. And then you recoil savings. Yeah. You can still see above. See down the barrel a little better. It's going to help. But, yeah, it's kind of interesting. Something new they come out with. But, yeah, they're great. We've got open sights, the red dot sight, Freedom RDS. Loophole. We've got a bunch of those. We've just got a big shipment of those. So, in anticipation. Everything you really need. I mean, until we run out. Fair. And I would say if you need something, don't wait until August because then they're out of stock everywhere. Powder, primers, even ammo for rifles, whatever it may be. So, yeah, we got them. I agree.

I've seen one that was loaded for a year, and it had some pits in the back. A little bit of pits. Yeah. But it might be okay. I don't know. I shouldn't have admitted that on the podcast. I'm not cutting that one. At least you know. Don't load that again. It's not like you're going to dump powder out, so this is the summer. No, I know. I'm not going to double load it. Yeah. I mean, at least you know. People have lost limbs. Pieces of limbs. Mine wasn't loaded. It could be worse. Mine wasn't loaded. It just wasn't clean for a full year. Oh. Oh, but so mine might be better because the powder wasn't burned, and that burned powder has got to be more corrosive. I don't know about this new powder.

Burned powder versus triple FG back when we were sharing. Burned powder has to be more corrosive than non-burned powder. Unless you shot it before and didn't. Well, I cleaned it between each shot. Oh, gotcha. Maybe. You might be fine.
