EP 365: Two 200" Utah General Season Deer and the Pre-Season Optics Rush

I don't know. I think it's by choice. He's going to hear this podcast get mad at me. Yeah. I don't know. It's just every magazine. You guys, these artists, they have certain hours. Their brains are just better. Yeah, I guess. He's a man. I was here last night for a little while, and he was out. He was way later than I was, and I had to go to bed. Yeah. Yeah. When you get older, it gets easier the older you get. Is that true? Yeah, it does. You work harder, all the things, Logan. Huh.

It would be nice to get older. Yeah. So, anyway, we've got some interesting things, interesting happenings in our personal lives. Really? Yeah. What? What? Well, what are we talking about? Well, I don't know. I would just think we ought to talk about some wasps and stuff. Oh. Oh.

Devin discovered. This is not podcast worthy. It's some funny stuff. There's a saying for it. BLD. It's true. Bad luck, Devin. Bad luck, Devin. So, Devin always has the story. He's chased by turkeys. Yeah. Everybody that's listening, do you remember the turkeys chasing him on the four-wheeler? And then he has proof. Proof. Video. You know what I'm saying? And then the owl that stares through his soul. Yeah. And then we've got video proof. I don't make it up. Of these yellow jackets coming out of the ground. And we have a doorbell ringer. What is it? What do they call those? A little ring doorbell. Ring. Yeah. Anyway. And I have a motion light with a camera. So, don't be poking around my residence. I will see you. Devin brings the video and shows us of the attack. How many confirmed stings did you get, Devin? I think I had eight. Yeah. And you pulled stingers out of your lower back.

Something was attached to my side here. Pretty soon he's shirtless. There's a shirtless dude running around his house. Honestly, I was on my porch. Yes. And the only thing I had on was my shoes and my pants. Did you ever think to go inside the house where there's no hornets? That was my next move. I didn't want to bring him in the house with me. Yeah. You didn't want to bring him in there? Was your wife and daughter in there? Yeah. That's kind of like. They were gone somewhere. Okay. Well. Did you think about going for the shotgun? So, how did it end? Did you win? I won. But how many trips to Ace did it take? Several. Because you'd call me between each trip. I bought four different cans of brands of spray. And how many of them worked? None. These things were bionics. This is a new species. I thought I'm like, Adam, you and I are old. Have we ever had these problems? No. Maybe.

It's just BLD. That's what we're talking about. They just. I pissed them off. I didn't even know they were there. But yeah. No. So what were they? Ground, ground, yellow jackets. Yeah. Yellow jackets or carpenter bees or something. They were in the ground. In your lot. They didn't know that you owned the place. They do now. I sprayed expanding foam into the crack where they were going. Is it like in a canister? Between two railroad ties, like a retaining wall. Then I had to get some powder spray in there. Substance? Yeah. Some 7, 5% powder. Oh. Cancer. Cancer causing. Yeah. You don't want to be downwind. Yeah. Within 24 hours, they were toast, I think. Yeah. So I won the battle. But the proof is amazing. You know, Logan, if you can throw that. I still haven't got away. When you advertise this podcast, can you throw the little video cards on?

If he's going to send it to me, I'll be surprised. How are you going to get obtained at? It's embarrassing, man. No, it's not. It's embarrassing. I would have ran the same way. I couldn't find my hat, Jason. I didn't know where it was. It was in the backyard. It was in the backyard. My shirt was in the driveway. My glasses were on the garage floor. You have safety glasses or what on? My sunglasses. Oh, okay. I was panicked. And the whole way around the house, I was getting hit. Did you have a neighbor witness this? Thank goodness, no. Oh, okay. Roger, my neighbor, saw me spray in the nest when I had a hoodie on at 80 degrees.

What's going on? It's like you've lived in a basement for the last 10 years, and you come out, and it's just the world, and it's bright. I mean, it's just everything's interesting. Everything happens to you. Everything's interesting. Everything's amazing. Scary. The world's scary. Now we all know what we need. The powder we need to have on that. Okay, one more Devon story. Tell us about your living conditions up there. No.

Come on. I'm not going to tell you guys details anymore. I haven't heard about this one. I may have the Hontavirus. Whoa. Remember, Bronson, when I used to call it the Honda virus? I didn't even know what it was. Anyway, so. Just a basement. A basement. Of a ranch house that hadn't been opened in 1,400 years. A long time. And Devon decides to go ahead and vacuum the place. You did? Yeah, I vacuumed. I mean. Washed his sheets. Had carpet. Yeah, but it was. It creates a dust storm. I was going to say, that can be a law of diminishing returns. It makes it worse.

You just. You're digging up dander from the 70s probably when you did that. Oh. That's disgusting. I think that really. That's bothersome. Well, the one thing. The hornets. The one good thing is. Devon's immune system bit by bit is becoming the strongest on planet Earth. This is the same guy who's got a bunker out on the strip ready for the end of days. I mean, just love these stories. Anyway. His favorite animal on planet Earth is a Wolverine. I'm not putting that. I'm topless, running, screaming. I mean. I may have said. I don't even know what I said. Will you just have him sign a waiver? Yeah. I think it's part of employment. Yeah. Well. Oh, jeez. And you know. He can beep out stuff on audio, Devon, to make it. I don't think I. I don't think he swore you were. I think it was pretty clean. But it was funny. He's running back and forth. And it's like. Anyway. I would do the same thing.

No, I wouldn't go think to check the camera footage. I don't know. What made you think? My wife did. Did she? Did she? Yeah. I was like, I ended up on the porch with my shirt off. She needed proof. I got to see that. You were alone? They followed me the entire way. Like I was. Yeah. She just was like, there's my man. Protecting our yard. If I was allergic, I wouldn't have made it to the freaking porch. Well, you did. You went inside and took a couple of Benadryl, didn't you? I got three or four of them right here on the back of my ear and my neck. Right at my breathing area.

Anyway. It breathes through your back. Yeah. So, Logan, you've had some water issues. What? Let's start with the tent. What happened to you, Logan? I love that tent. I've been gone. But there's some situations that it's just. Well, you know how we've had these monsoons that are. Well, I can't tell when the rain's coming. When I'm out of service, it's too late to do anything. And I set up my tent cot over there and woke up. Is this the Devon special? I think it's the same one Devon has. And they've got a rain fly, but it takes so long to put up that by the time it starts raining and you get out and put it up, all your stuff is already wet. And so I went and slept in the passenger seat of my truck. I thought you learned last year in New Mexico not to do that, but apparently not. No, I haven't learned my lesson. What about that thing? It took the whole hunt to dry it out.

He soaked his mattress completely last year. Were you peed the bed? No, actually. It rained on me the night I got in, and so I left it out all the flaps up to dry. And it was hot and dry that day. And so we went out that morning, and we're coming back in that morning, smashed with flash rainstorms. And that thing is – It literally takes like two seconds to put the rain flying. That's what I told you. I'm not fast enough, I guess. I don't have your skill set. Well, you need to put it up before you go to bed. Is that your secret? The last time I got flooded, I put the thing on, but I was too lazy to loop it to the legs, and it blew off. It doesn't do anything. Yeah, it was three inches of water. Oh, you had one of those stories. I remember that. Was that Nevada? Yeah. Yeah. So – The owl tree. The owl tree looking into your soul. I mean, it's like the shoe tree.

Nevada's the only place on earth that has – We got one up Cedar Canyon. Yeah. Have you guys been noticing that and taking shape? No. Is it really? Oh, yeah. Right around the corner. Geez. Right around the red corner where the rock climbers are. Anybody needs a pair of shoes. There you go. There you go. Yeah. Let's see, Logan. So, also, you about flooded out in your house the other day, huh? Oh, yeah. It rains pretty good in Cedar. My house is in a terrible spot for a flood zone, and so we – Under that underpass. Yeah. It's like four foot of water hole right there. Yeah, and so I was actually in Nevada when my roommate sent me a video, and it was like our doorstep. It was like two or three inches from the top of our doorstep. But they knew, I'm assuming, when they built there because they built our driveways on an incline.

So, it gets pretty close to our garage and our doorstep, but it doesn't flood. Do you have any new catfishing stories for us? I haven't been catfished lately. I've been careful. I think I'm learning. All right. That's good. Hey. That you're learning from past experience. That's all you do. Wyatt? I only need one. Wyatt, do you have any glassing tips for glassing through hazy conditions? No, it's just – Smoky conditions. Unbeatable. You just throw in the towel. Yeah. You kind of got to go with it. So, look a lot closer than what you normally would. Kind of makes scouting big country pretty tough. We just had a lot of fires. What are we talking about? Just smoky conditions and glassing. He's been glassing through smoky conditions. You got some new glass speaking of, didn't you, Wyatt? Yeah. I picked up the new Suaro 12s. EL. EL 12s. The Rangers. Yeah. Did you try them out?

I have not tried them out yet. They just showed up yesterday. So, working with the app and pushing ballistic profiles and stuff to it. Yeah. I haven't even got that far yet. Need to get it done. Yeah. So, that's an imminent need here. What did you leapfrog from? What are you currently using? I just have been using the 10s. EL. Yeah. The 10 EL Rangers. Yeah. So, I have the 10s and the EL Rangers, but I just wanted something a little bit more powerful so maybe I don't have to pack my 14s around as much. So, when you're doing the 12s, what are you going to use for a spotter? A big spotter or like a medium or light, small? My spotty scope? Yeah. I have that Suaro ATC, that Suaro ATC that I'm going to use for. With the 95? ATC. The small. Oh, the little ATC. The 45. 17 to 40. All right. Yeah. So, I'm going to use that as a backpacker. STC. Straight. Yeah, sorry. It is the STC.

Are you a straight guy? I did go with the straight in that scope. I like it. Straight guys. I knew you'd come around. Yeah. Just primarily for the window mount. Oh. But you're not. You're going. I think you said a backpack setup. Yeah. It's not necessarily window mount. It just slides in any old. Yeah. Just fits in a backpack. Conveniently. I remembered that because I used it the other day and I was like. Did you use it? I had to kink my name. It was a while ago. July.

So, what do you think about the 40 power? Is that enough? I think it's going to be enough for a backpacker to know. Well, to know if you've got a shooter. Yeah. Know whether you've got to get a closer look or not. Yeah. So, I think it's going to be great for that. Not have to pack the 95 everywhere. Well, you don't want to pack that. Any 99, 95 in backcountry. I mean, unless you've got a horse, llama, TW, something like that. Right, Deb? I mean, if you don't have that. Do you got a TW? I have none of those things. Do you have a workable TW right now or do you sell yours? I have no llamas, goats, pack mules, nothing. I said TW. I do not have a TW. You got rid of it? Yeah. In preparation to buy yours. No, it ain't for sale. No, I sold that a long time ago. I was going to say, that was years ago. I do. Ever since I missed. Yeah, I never thought that. Are you in the market?

Just burning some gas? Well, dude. You got to burn some gas every couple months. I got non-effinol, whatever, and cherry gas, and it's like, and a brand new battery. 85 octane. 73 miles now. I'll bet when I owned mine, I bought six batteries in the years I had it. They're terrible. They're one year. This one battery, they're disposable. They're like 10 pounds. It's nine volt. I mean, this is a legit big battery, but anyway. All right. Moving on. Do we have any other personal stories, Josh? You got anything? I've got nothing. No, that's not true. I've got nothing.

Just nothing you want to say out loud. I've been doing nothing. I went out this weekend, and we went out and looked for some sheep, but that was... You and Judson had an adventure? Yeah. Yeah, we went out and looked at some sheep, so that was good. How about this? How about the electric truck you were smoked by? Rivian? Yeah. Yeah, one of those. Didn't even help a feller out? No. What do you mean? He broke down? Needed a charge? No, he was fine. He was just having to wait for the clay to drive. Even if you were to get him out, what are you going to do? Nothing. Get stuck in five yards. Yeah. He was just sitting there making pottery in the road. Were you in on a... Was he? He really was. Like, had a big old wad of it, and he's just like, I'm going to make a pot out of this. And you were on a wheeler or a side-by-side, so you were all right? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Like, taking it off his tires?

Yeah, pulling it off the tires and stuff. And he was going to keep it? No, it's getting terrible. Keep it moist. They keep it moist and make a little pot, huh? I've never known anybody to manually pull mud off the tires. He was like, he said he'd been there for... Which, he'd probably been there for two hours, because we waited in the truck for two hours before I even... Uh-huh. Touched that area. Yeah, I was like, I'm just going to give it a couple hours. I told you guys, I rescued a family from Shanghai out there one time, told me, if they ever come to Shanghai, I'm welcome to look them up. I think there's only like... Do you remember their name? ...17 million people in Shanghai. I don't know how many, but I think I'm going to find them. Do they have the yellow pages? Do they have yellow pages? Yeah, but I... Chat GTP them. I just said, hey, this one's on me. Oh, my God.

They had a two-wheel drive Escalade rental. Yeah. Imagine that in clay. That's why I just will never buy rental. I've seen too many of them out there in the pre. Where they should be, cutting down roads that MapQuest say that is a good road, and cut from A to B, cut through this one. It's pretty crazy, though, in some of that country now, just even from five, ten years ago, the amount of, I don't know what you call them, overlander people. Overlanders. Yeah. Yeah. Like, they've all got their little pop-up tents and stuff. Is that what they call them? And you think... Hashtag fan life. You're like out there in the middle of nowhere, and you kind of think like you're in the middle of nowhere, and it was about an hour before sunset, and all of a sudden, just hordes of people just start coming out to all these points and stuff to camp the night. Chill out. It's crazy. Yeah.

It's what blogs and internet posts do to say about people who want to get married and take their pictures here and there. Yeah, we rescued a wedding out there once, too. Yeah. Aaron drove the bride home before the groom did. That's the story. Oh. Oh. Thanks. Literally, we're coming off a point. There's lots of firsts. I'm going to tell the story. I'm going to tell the story, because Aaron will kill me if I know. But, yeah, we're coming off one of those points, and one of those just at dark, like you said. Yeah. And they'd taken all their pictures and had their wedding out on one of those points. Yeah. And then it's dark, we're all driving home, going to camp, and it started crushing. Yeah. And they were ahead of us, or them, and they went off the road. Yeah. And she's in her full wedding dress, and Aaron gets her and breaks her all the way back into town.

Somebody else grabbed the mom and dad. They're like 80-year-old people. I don't remember where the groom was, but it was kind of, it's the joke amongst us, that Aaron brought the bride home before the groom.

This is good stuff. This is good stuff. Anybody that knows Aaron Hittybump, this is really good stuff. It was a true story, and it took them a day or two to get there. I mean, they went off the road, sliding clay, and like, all right, you're walking away from your truck, you're not coming back for a day or two to get it off. Yeah. You know, it's so sloppy. And they were on side-by-sides, like you said, if it's bad on one of those, but you can still fight your way around them. They're not as heavy, you know. But you get a truck with balled-up gumbo on it, you're done. You're making pottery. Right. Well, I think those side-by-side tires can kind of clean out easier. You know, the truck tire, it's just truck or car tires, what you see out there most of the time. Yeah, people go out there and stuff they shouldn't. A lot of oil pans have been hit and rocks out there.

Kind of like the 40-mile road. Yeah. Lots of oil strewn about. Yeah. All right. Well, lots of hunting to be done. Yeah, there was a lot. Coming up. So, you know, it was kind of a, I don't know, less than average year in a lot of parts of the country. But then there was a couple of bright spots. Places that don't normally produce a lot of good bucks produced a couple of really good bucks. And here, Utah's general, a couple great bucks. We've got a guy we're going to visit with here shortly. Anyway, this particular buck, this was sent, I saw a video of this from a really good friend of mine's boy who was hiking up there. And gnarly, gnarly country. And then another friend of mine sent me this picture of this buck dead. And it's the buck. And I'm just like, what are the chances? I don't even know if bucks killed in this. You know, you guys do. You know? That's your backyard.

That's stuff you. Yeah. You know, we've hunted quite a bit. Yeah. Yeah. Yep. You're fond of it, right? Sure. You don't hunt there anymore. Set the stage. It doesn't matter. Set the stage, Wyatt. Deep and deep. Beaver West. Is that what it was? Yeah. Easy. Southwest desert. Anyway, just something. Anyway. It's interesting. Just kind of an interesting year. It seems like the elk ruts a little bit slow.

If big bulls are slow to come in, it just feels a little bit off. Doesn't it feel a little that way? Yeah, it does. And I don't know what. Full moon's not helping. Yeah. Full moon. Utah, archery elk. Has it been slow? It seems like it. I mean, there's been a couple, right? But usually, you know, 15. It felt like more bulls died right off the bat than they had the last few days. Well, yeah. Just summer velvet slash, you know, bachelor stuff. Summer patterns. And then it feels like it's been a dead two weeks. Yeah. Yep. It feels like. Yeah. Rough. In Utah. Which would be really. And I'm hearing in other states, too. Arizona. It hurts. Pretty quiet down there. Which is, obviously, that opens up Friday. Find out shortly. Somebody will. Somebody will. About us.

And in Mexico, too. It's hard when a state, you know, a state's off to get excited about it. Right, Bronson? But at the same time. Take a tag when they come. Yeah. Take them when they come. I met him down here in Cedars when I was going to school. So. Yeah. Super good kid. Anyway. Just had absolute great luck. And killed a stud buck. So, anyway. Let's get the story from him.

Hello. Hey, Nick. Jason Carter. Wyatt. Everybody here. How are you? Good. How are you guys doing? Good. We catch you at a good time? Oh, yeah. It's always a good time to talk to you guys. Better than working? A lot better than working. Good. We might have to edit that out. We probably don't want your boss to know about it.

You got to stop and clock out or are we good? No, we're good.

Oh, we were just talking a little bit about your buck there. So, we just wanted to congratulate you and talk a little bit about the hunt and, you know, leading up to it and everything like that. We know you're a pretty hardcore archer. Spent a lot of time on a lot of units in Utah chasing bucks with a bow. So, yeah, I've kind of been all over the place chasing them. But, yeah, I feel pretty fortunate this year. Yeah, that's an incredible buck. We'll probably have a picture post with the podcast. These guys can see it. But kind of talk a little bit about leading up to the hunt a little bit. You said you were a little bit busier this year. So, maybe didn't get out and do as much scouting? No, I spent maybe two days this year just looking for my truck. You know, we have. It's very frustrating. Yeah. That's very frustrating. Makes the rest of us feel really bad.

The hours we've spent didn't turn up with anything like your buck. See, and I think it's a bad situation for myself, too, because now my wife thinks that I don't have to go scout all summer long. Oh, yeah. She thinks I could just keep working and it just happens now. So, yeah, well. No, yeah, it worked out. I'd just been super busy this year with starting my own construction company and then having a little girl. So, work was busy and then family life was busy. But I, too, had, you know, at least an idea of the area. Just, I hunted it last year a little bit, too, and seen some solid deer in there. So, I figured that I'd just give it a go and see what happens. So, I hiked in Friday night and I think the thing I found was him. I just, I knew that was the deer I was going to chase, obviously.

Unbelievable. Did you say, did you say you found him then? The night before. No, the Friday night, knocking in. You're like, bingo. All right. Here we go. Yeah. The night before just got super.

Do you think he, I mean, I don't know. So, anyway, how did he not get killed last year? But I think he probably blew up. You know. That would be my guess. You know, it's hard to say. I took him to Jeff Baird there down there in St. George. And he thought he was an older, older buck. But whether he just, you know, blew up this year and nobody really knew about him. Or if he was good at hiding the previous years. Oh. But, yeah, he's a really good deer. Well, just from what little I know about the locals up there that grew up hunting that mountain. Them deer have learned to try to hide pretty hard from some of those hunters that are from up there. I don't know why it, don't you think? In that country. Yeah. And it does have some pretty, pretty remote kind of steep and deep country. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's not a flatlander country. That's for sure. The term cow's face comes to mind.

And you didn't have it to yourself, it kind of sounded like. No, not at all. And, you know, it was actually, I think he's a fairly smart deer because opening morning he got missed three times by different people. Oh, wow. And then. We're talking bow hunting. That takes some. Yeah. For one deer to get shot at that many times. But the rifle's one thing because you're just running in front of orange everywhere. Yeah, yeah. Wow. So three different shots he got eerie dodged opening morning. And then after that he kind of went nocturnal. So we didn't see him. So did you, did you watch him opening morning then? Did you see that all take place or where were you? So he was actually bedded like 300 yards down below me opening morning, but I couldn't see him from where I was sitting. And a kid that had been watching him all summer, he snuck in, got a shot at him, missed him.

And then we watched him blow up out of the canyon and bed across the side that I was glassing in. And it was only maybe an hour, hour and a half before dark. My buddy, he ran over there to try and get him. He ended up missing him twice right there on Saturday night. Jeez. And then Sunday we couldn't find him. Monday I heard that they did see a glimpse of him, I think. But then nobody saw him again Tuesday, Wednesday. I went back in Thursday, couldn't find him Thursday. And then Friday, so what are we, almost a week into the hunt here. So Friday I set up on my glassing knob, couldn't find him again. And I figured that he'd either left the basin or he'd kind of gone nocturnal. So I just, I would glass, get up and move 100 yards down the ridge line, glass, and just, I did that for a couple hours. And I ended up finding him bed at about 9 o'clock. Wow.

So I think that he just quit moving during the day. I think he was, he just went straight nocturnal on everybody. But still in the same basin that you'd been hunting him in the whole time? Yep, still in the same basin. Jeez. Crazy. So did that day, did you get a chance to make a play on him? Yeah, so I glassed him up about 9 o'clock. And I got an arrow in him about 11.30. Okay. So about two and a half hours. And I snuck into him, I was at 50 yards. And he was bedded, didn't know I was there. And, you know, you play the game. Do you try and stand him up? Do you try and sneak in closer? Do you just wait for him to stand? What do you do, you know? So I decided that I was just going to sit there all day and wait until he stood up. But about 15 minutes into sitting there, I had a bug fly down my throat and it made me cough. Oh. He jumped up. So I didn't really go back and let one rip at him.

That sounds like Devin's kind of lot right there. I couldn't believe it. The only thing worse would be dealing with a hornet going down your throat. Yeah, yeah. Luckily it was. Devin almost had that. Yeah, that would be a good situation there. So you started hacking and he stood up so you had to shoot. Yeah, so that bug hit me right in the back of the throat when I knew I was going to cough. I could not. So I was ready and I coughed and then he stood up and then I ended up shooting him. Wow. That's pretty cool. So 50 yards just punched him or? 50 yards. So when I shot, he kind of jumped and I hit him hard and back. I knew it was a deadly shot, but I hit him further back than I would have liked. So I chased him down the mountain. I had him at 70 yards and he was just, I was waiting for him to come take another step out of a pine tree.

And another hunter was actually on their way over to stalk a different buck and they bumped him. So he went taking off. Does this sound like the country you guys know? This is general season Utah. Yeah, general Utah. Anybody that's looking to burn your points in Utah general. That's why I can't believe this deer's alive. I mean, you know. Yeah. And luckily those guys were super cool because they ended up watching where my deer went and they helped get me back in on them. And then I ended up shooting them again at 20. Didn't you say everybody you met on the mountain was like the coolest dudes ever? It was the best experience I've had on the mountain with people. Well, that's not easy to find. Yeah, I came out on top on that one with the deer, but everybody was super friendly.

In fact, I've been texting most of them all through the week to see if they've got on any of the other bucks that are up there. Geez. Yeah. Have they had any luck? So one of the bucks we were trying to get killed, he got killed by a different guy. Geez. I don't think any of them have punched their tags yet up there.

All right. So these guys watched the buck, ran right into him, blew it, watched him go. So it gave you a shortcut. Say, hey, we just, you know, watched him go over there. So you didn't have to start tracking. You just went to where they last saw him, basically. Yep, exactly. And so I probably snuck in another hour and a half. And finally he stood up and I pinwheeled him at 20. And he kind of fell against a tree. And then he death kicked and he cartwheeled down the mountain about another 750 yards. Oh. In velvet. Yeah. In velvet. Scratched up all his velvet. His right horn actually broke off his skull cap. But just stayed attached with his fur, but it was just hanging there loose. That's crazy. Dang. What does that, what does, what does a Boone and Crockett score pulpit? As long as you can piece them back together, aren't you good?

As long as it will fit perfectly back together, you just kind of have to. Even if it's at the skull, even if it's at the base. Yeah, that's the thing. If it fits perfectly back together, I mean. You're good. Yeah, so you just have to have it skull capped out or whatever and look at it and make a determination that way. On the inside spread or whatever. Okay. Well, in this case, yeah, the hide grows right into the velvet at some points and it was held on. Well. Yeah. The things you learn from the horn. I was just happy that the horn wasn't completely shattered up. Yeah. Yeah. All the extra points and things it has there on a track, nothing broke off. Yeah, nothing broke that way. Got lucky. Wow. That's a story of, I guess, sticking to it because it's Utah General. It's not, on a deer like that, it's not going to be clean and easy. It's just not. No.

You can have interference, you know, whether it be, you know, incidental or whatever. Would you have like six other hunters up there to contend with? Yeah, there's about ten guys up there hunting him. Right. Yeah. So, the competition, and it's just crazy just to dig him up right there in kind of that same exact basin. And a week into it. That he called home. Like, everybody had chances. Yeah. You know what I mean? I mean, guys had been close, he'd been buggered, and still be able to dig him up right there in that same basin. That's what's nice about the velvet. They give you a few chances. Yeah. Usually. Yep. Yeah, exactly. And that's, you know, from the glassing knob I had been sitting on most of the time, I couldn't see where that deer was. So, I think the only reason I found him was because I finally got up and just started moving

to get different vantage points to look into that pine pocket that he was sitting in.

Yeah, just turn him up bedded like that. That takes dedication, too. A lot of time behind the glass and picking things apart. Yeah, there was a lot of time behind the glass on that one. How far away was he when you originally glassed him up? I guess we should have asked that. Maybe you said. I don't even know. It took me two and a half hours to get over there. So, up the ridgeline, down the canyon, back up the other side of the canyon. So, he's 1,500 yards, I'd guess.

That's a good one. Good glass for a better buck. Yeah. Pretty awesome. So, your best buck, right? Your best buck? Yeah, he's definitely my best buck. I've been waiting for Wyatt to go put a tape on him, but I had Jeff tape him out at 207. There you go. Well, he looks 230. This deer has the look, like inlines. Pitch for it, front. Heavy, bass. I mean, it's got a little bit of everything. Yeah. Yeah, he's a sweet deer. He's really cool. How many points did he have on each side? I mean, you can't point to the magazine yet because we don't have a print. Usually, we call people after we run a story in the mag, but what's he got for points? We're too excited. That's right. We have to be on. Freshie. Yeah. He's a 6x8 with good eye guards, too. Yeah. Pretty awesome. Got some cool characters. Much inlines, a little cheater off the one side. And making a shot with a bug in your gullet. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah, I don't have any other tags in my pocket this year, actually. You know, I went and spent a little bit of time on the strip with my buddy, helping him, trying to find a deer. October next month, yep. So, make sure you do that. Even if you applied for deer, elk, and antelope, they don't give it to you.

Hopefully, beat that like a dead horse for the last three or four years because it's like, it's like the craziest little hiccup. Yeah, change that they've had right there. Because he wants to go to a mile. But when you're shooting four-inch groups at 1,000, I mean, that's the next step for the guy. Try 1,200. 1,300. 1,400. How many yards is that? 1,700. 1,600. 1,700. 1,700. It's like 1,760-something.

When you take the fierce, I mean, they're new age. You know, they've got carbon options, steel options. And these new calibers, they're fun. I've had a good start with the 2025 deer for sure, but... No, I'll be straight with it. It's a deer that I had seen a couple years back, but he wasn't anything like he was. I don't know what you guys are seeing in horn growth, but for what I've seen this year, it's better than I thought for having a dry winter. We just haven't. We're hunting more desert stuff. It's just further south than you, but... Oh, yeah. And I'm assuming you're hunting up, you know, somewhat closer to where you live than where we live down here, but we're not necessarily seeing that down here. You know, we had some spring storms, but it was... It felt like too little too late, but... Yeah. But anyway... I can see that, but yeah, no, I... I got lucky. I mean, with a bow, I think there's a lot more luck to it than skill, to be honest, but... So was it a buck you watched all summer? Or scouted, or... Yeah. Yeah.

It's a deer that I ended up finding late in scouting, but stayed on him, and he actually pulled the slip on me, his big deer do. I couldn't find him for about two weeks, and we were in there chasing some other deer with my wife. She's got a tag as well, so we were just kind of sticking to it and trying some other deer, and he happened to come out of nowhere and was able to get on him once before I got a shot at him in the rain, and just didn't quite come together. It got in there, and it was raining sideways, and I thought it would be good to pull a stalk while I had some stuff covering up my wind and sound, so I tried to get in there, and it just didn't pan out, but the deer didn't get boogered or anything, so I went back in there the next day. Didn't find him that morning, but was able to turn him back up that night, and got in

there and found him about six o'clock in his bed, and tried moving in on him a couple different times, but I just couldn't get a shot because he was in some thick stuff, and got to about 30 yards the one time I tried closing in, and just realized I was way too close, so I had to back out, and was just going to sit there until dark for when he got up to feed that night, and was in there, and it took a lot longer than I thought it was going to take. He didn't stand up until I cried at 8.05, so I was fighting the clock with lighting and stuff, trying to get a shot, seeing your pins and everything, and he stood up, and I could just see his horns, and I kind of ranged a couple places where I thought he was going to come out at, and ranged a little gap that was 50 yards out, and as soon as I was putting my range finder back in the pouch, I looked up, and he'd already walked through that gap,

so uh-oh. Will started turning. I'm like, uh-oh, missed that one, and ranged a few more spots that I thought he might come out lower, and he ended up stepping out on the lower bench that I'd ranged at 72 yards, and he came out and gave me a good shot and let her rip, and luck could have it. The arrow found its mark, and he didn't go more than 20 yards, so I honestly didn't know where I quite hit him, because it was right at dark and had those luminox on my arrow, so I watched it go in him, and it was still in him as he took off, so I knew I'd got one in him, and I had one of my buddies up on the hill with my wife's spot, and then they're like, ah, he went 40 yards, and I can't see it moving, like the light's still shining, and I can't see it moving, so I kind of backed out, wondering where I hit, and we gave him

about an hour, a little over an hour, and went in there to see what we could find for blood, and walked down to first blood, and it was looking really good, looking real good, so I found blood and walked about 20 yards, and it started spraying pretty good, and my buddy walked down in front of me, my buddy Mike is what his name is, walked around the bush in front of me, and I was like, you got blood on that side, and he says, no need, there's a dead deer right here, so he made it about 25 yards from where I hit him. Wow. Didn't go 25. It didn't go 20. That's awesome. It's a pretty buck, man. Can't be done. Super pretty. Yeah. For me, that's always kind of been a dream, is something with some matching inlines is what I've pictured to be. Sure enough. That's what he's got. Or like a super freak mass 230 buck. Yeah, so you're on a pretty good streak.

Yeah. No, I've been blessed and had some good luck on the general stuff here in Utah, so I can't complain there. Well, maybe we should talk a little bit about your bad luck, too. Let's talk about your first trip up the mountain this year. Yeah, I've had some bad luck. That's what I've told myself all years. I feel like the mountain owes me one, and it gave me one back with that deer, but I did. I was pulling up for early summer scouting and just trying to get away from work and all the BS going on in the world and got about three quarters of the way up the canyon, and I had a check air filter light kick on on my truck at one of our company trucks here, and I got out and kind of didn't think much of it. As soon as I popped the hood, flames came ripping out from under it. Long story short, the truck trailer and everything inside, it went down. I lost a lot of gear, a lot of high-end

hunting equipment that really hurt, but luckily that stuff that you hate to pay for month to month insurance actually came through and helped me out, so that was a big saving grace. I lose track of what's in my trucks. Could you imagine? What kind of trailer was it again? Was it like a camper, or what was it? Yeah, it was a full-on camp trailer. Dang. And how long did it take from the time it started up when you first noticed flames to the time it was all gone? Yeah, from the time I got out and cracked the hood and knew it was on fire, I bet from the time the truck was burned and the trailer was going down, what, there hadn't been more than 20 minutes at top, so I went from the front of the truck to sheer panic and just grabbing as much out of the back seat of the truck as I could, and that didn't last long before the cab would start filling with smoke,

so I jumped out and went to the trailer thinking I could find the fire extinguisher, and by that time I looked out and the whole truck was on fire, windows were blowing out, and I was... I just got a tank of gas in there somewhere, you know. There was, yep, I had a gas tank in the back of the truck and then the propane tanks on the front of the truck. What did the propane tanks do? Were they interesting? Did they go? Yeah, it wasn't a... Yeah, it wasn't a big boom, but it just... Luckily, I think they have those seals on the front, so for that thing it just leaks, but it threw a big flame. It threw a big flame. Well, then you're probably trying to avoid, like, lighting everything around you on fire, I'd imagine. Who cares? Yeah, that's... What about the toy tank? Did you have... Is it one of those toy haulers that have a toy tank full of fuel, too? No, it was just a...

Radio tank trailer. Yeah. Jeez. Trailer, but it sucked. We lost bows, spotting scopes, vinos, I mean... What kind of friend asked you that on a podcast? Exactly, Wyatt. We didn't even forewarn you about... I mean, wow. It's an interesting story. It is. He's just started to heal up after killing a big buck, and he ripped the scab completely off. But, I mean, still, that could be, honestly, life and death in a situation in the Canadian Rockies. This time of year, you get dumped a foot or 18 inches of snow, and you'd have no whatever. Like, even though we've got dates that we can and can't run trail cameras, they definitely provide us with enough information to get going. Yeah. You guys are hunting elk and deer off of stealth cam info. We've been busy. And, yeah. We kept the doors open at stealth cam this year, probably just ourselves. Yeah. Yeah. It was awesome. We experimented with some new cameras this year. Those G-Max visions were phenomenal. I was kind of skeptical at first because I didn't understand how good that little screen would be or if it would even be useful. But it's way better.

From setting it up, it's way faster to set up because you can actually see what you're doing. And then lining up the shot so you can take a picture and then go look at it on a little screen. It's awesome. This is really important stuff for your generation because if you guys ever hunted without the use of trail cameras. Onyx, trail cameras, I don't know how I'd do it without them. Because you never have. And now starting. When you were born, basically, or when you started hunting, you were able to use those. I don't know that I've ever hunted. I had a Garmin Rhino my first two years of hunting with the Onyx card in it or whatever it was. And then. Montana Mountain. Had a chip. Yeah. Yep. Before it was even called Onyx. Yep. And then switched to Onyx on the phone a couple years later. Yep. I got one of those. Those are worth a lot of money, Jason. The rhinos? Worth that chip in it.

Do you want to buy it from me? I got one. I've got one too. Got a lot of waypoint. Aaron's told me you can get all those into Onyx somehow. I just need to do it. You need to do it. That rhino? And my dad, I asked my dad, I said, what do you got for a warm sleeping bag? He said, here, take this. And he hands me this big old. It was a big sleeping bag. But I was not cold. You've had two. A lot of people got wet and cold. Yeah. But it was a good storm. Then we spent a lot of time out in Nevada. Yeah. And it was nasty. But then it was rain. Kind of some crazy monsoon. Put the fly on Logan. We were just putting it on. Just sleep with the rain fly on. But then hot and dusty and miserable. Yeah. Yeah. So anyway. They make great stuff. I pretty much lived in my Hela. And then there's always that first morning. You've been living in that Hela. You know. QU stuff. You know. And then all of a sudden you're like freezing to death. Yeah.
