EP 366: Western Elk Update and a New Mexico Elk and Nevada Mule Deer Story

We had to do our own.

She's the one that knows, has all the knowledge. Wyatt, how you doing? I'm doing good. Yeah? Hunts are moving along? Yeah. In full swing. Yeah. Did you say you're moving along? What'd you say? He's hobbling along. Hobbling along. Are you? Devin, ouch. Sorry. Would you like to define that a little bit while I take a tumble for the words? I'll be back. I'll be back. Don't worry. What did I miss? Oh, there's another story I guess might come up. It's not much of a story. I mean, I don't know how I pull the muscle or something in my leg and it's been bothering me. Really? Yeah. I'll be back. Quad or hammy? Which side? It's on the left side, interior part of my upper thigh. And all the groin. The groin. It's probably lower than a groin I would imagine, but I don't know. Maybe it runs all the way down there. I don't care. I don't know. Will you chat GPT with us?

Where does the groin stop and start? Let's not. If it's halfway between the knee and the hip socket and below that, it's no. We should get you doing some stretches in here, Wyatt. I probably should. Maybe a thigh master. When's the last time you stretched? A thigh master. It's been a while. Let's do a thigh master. Gym class. Oh, it's 05? Yeah. Oh, boy. Here we go. What do we got? Lower abdomen meets the upper inner thigh. That's the groin and your lower abdomen, huh? Yeah. That's nowhere. I mean, we're down more by the knee. Oh, really? Yeah. So it's an inner quad muscle maybe, huh? Yeah. Inner muscle. Does it have something to do with sleeping in the back of your truck, or is it more because of hiking? It could have done both. I don't know. Or you did a fair share of both this week. You know what helps older guys? Pillow between their knees. Is that what it is? Yeah.

You might try that this next go around, Wyatt. Simple as that. Adam and I have got some go-to little hints to help you. I've never slept that way in my life, Wyatt. They make these really long pregnancy pillows. You can just get a big body pillow and just cuddle up with it in my canvas cutter.

Hey, laugh if you want. It might help you get the best night's sleep you've ever had. It might. Double pad, regular pad, and then also your canvas cutter pad. Probably could use a little thicker pad, too. I mean, that four-inch memory foam on the bed of the truck. It gets old. Cold blue steel. Yeah. No doubt about it. So, anyway, Logan, how are you doing? Doing good. Good. Helped your dad? Logan, you got some blood. You got bloody over the weekend. Yeah, yeah. Dad killed the buck. It was awesome. And now we're on to elk. Do you ever get tired of helping your dad? Yes. It would be nice to have the help reciprocate back at times, but I think we're getting there. Are you? I told him he's not allowed to draw a tag next year, so we'll see how that goes. Yeah. But, no, it's been fun. It's been an awesome year. I learned a lot. Yeah. Yeah.

A place I've never been, really, so kicked my butt for a long time. Did the gas money ever run out? No. No, you know what? It's crazy. Is it unlimited fun there? It was, yeah. He just basically gave me cars launch on a gas card and said, go find me a deer. Wow. It was great. That's good. I haven't paid for gas in months. Yeah? Did you pay? How about mileage? Did he reimburse you for mileage? He hasn't. I'm hoping that I get some optics. He got the best of you. He's got a triple damper diem going on. That sounds like a good dad deal. Hope you kept the little yellow pad with all the days and hours. Yeah, that's right. Somebody owes you some money. I'll get it out of him one way or another. That's good stuff. All right. So, where are we at today, guys? We're going to talk about some things, Bronson. What should we be talking about? I don't know. Hunts are on.

We'll get some stories in a minute, but maybe just a quick overview. What's going on, Wyatt, in the application world? As far as Arizona, I guess, opened up for turkeys and havies and bison. Yeah. So, that's up and going. Is there any, like, pheasant and sandhill crane lumped into that? Or is there any weird stuff, Jason? Wyatt would know about that. Swan. We do apply guys, but not this go-around. I don't know about Arizona, but sandhill crane. On this go-around? I don't think this go-around is next. No. Okay. Well, I see that. A couple for now. Yeah, previous one. Kind of interesting. You're playing for turkeys in September for next April, May. Well, that's a big deal. A lot of points associated. Maybe I'll apply for sandhill crane. You should. Guy like you, oryx hunter. Hey, when does that start? December. Next week? Oh, I thought you had October.

These are the things that Adam and I have been talking about. Wow. The state of the nation address with deer, elk, things like that. Why not do weird stuff? Weird stuff. Like what you're talking about. You know what I mean? Cranes and oryx. What else? I mean, bears, I'm out. Lions? Yeah. There was a lot of them. I could be in. There was a lot of them. Yeah. Got a lion track out in sheep country this last weekend. Same cannon we killed a ram. Yeah, that's crazy. Fresh, hot. Wow. Yeah. Probably jumped it. It was probably trying to snack on a lamb right there. Well, and sheep are so dumb. They'd be like, what's that? I walk up. Anyway. Rub noses. Rub noses. Rub noses. Make a little noise. One of them could wipe out a whole hundred. A hundred percent. Well, there's like one water source within five miles in any direction. So it's like. Yeah. Not too hard to lay in the weeds.

It's going to eat what it wants. Yeah. Yeah. Pretty awesome. But there's a lot going on out there. We actually had a guy stop in. A member stop in. It killed a great bull. Yeah. Cool. Up on the penguins. Really cool. Heavy sucker. Just awesome. But anyway, the elk hunts are going crazy. We're seeing. I mean. What do you mean by going crazy? Well, just meaning. They're in full swing. Meaning they're in full swing in all states. Like where is there a state that doesn't have an elk hunt going on? We could have left the word off crazy and just said the elk hunts are going on. They're going on. But are a little bit. Not like crazy. It seems a little bit tough, right? That's what. What? What? What? What? Go ahead. Okay. Let's just. Let's just say it. Has anybody seen a rougher? Where are we at? Where are we at?

Has anybody felt like the lack of jubilation, exuberation, you know, pitchers, all that? Seems. It's a telling. There was a few good bulls in Utah, but it was kind of tough, eh? Yeah. It kind of seemed like the rut was off to kind of a slower start. Well. Yeah. They killed some. The biggest bulls were killed the first week of the archery when, you know, hunting them like deer, basically. Yeah. And then it's been pretty tough since then. I don't know how bad in New Mexico. We'll get that update here in a minute from. We got a Wyoming update, too. Yeah. How'd that go, Devin? He's not done yet. That's a 30-day season. Oh, still messing with him. Yeah. Yeah. Letting it. Still pondering. Letting the rut ripen. Still pondering. 14-hour drive. Yes. It's no joke. You got those same types of pondering. It makes a man out of you. It's. Yeah. How bad do you want it?

Or when you decide to leave and then you're 10 hours in, you're like, should I have left? Yes. Yes, you should have. But yes, I should have. You should always ask me because the answer is always yes. You're doing a good thing. If I'd have had service, I need Starlink or something. Starlink is no joke. Anybody out there that doesn't have it, go get it. Oh, Jason. He's a distributor now. Yeah. But Archibald's over there like, I don't have very good service. And I'm thinking, you need Starlink, guy. Yeah. I would be in my tent and all of a sudden my phone would just, boop, boop, boop, boop. I'd get service and then nothing for hours. That's crazy. I like little updates out of Arch. He just likes to go dark. It's kind of hard. I like going to ever get in touch with him. It was good. It was good last week hitting Wyatt and getting response, knowing he was in the boonies and he was still replying. But you had a lot of service. I did. I did have service where he was. I did turn it on at times. Did you? Yeah. Yeah. Pretty awesome. Anyway, so this mobile Starlink, it goes in your truck. Yeah. It's awesome. Pretty incredible.

Worked while you're driving around. Do you guys have the adapter that goes on the top that you just pop it into? No. Dash. I just throw it on the dash. Just throw it on the dash. If you've got a sunroof, you can just slide the sunroof slider and shove it in there and close it up. So you have? Yeah. It's better than any mount they come up with. No rattle, no nothing. Logan told me to get it and I'm not going to give him credit for why I got it. I have Bluetooth on my truck. My other friend's credit. Anybody else, credit me, no.

You do see him a lot more once you know what to look for. I mean, it seems like a lot of people are running him. Yeah. A lot of hunters and stuff. Nonstop service, being able to talk and anyway. Again, another one of those things that kill deer, kill sheep, kill elk. You know what I mean?

Immediate responses, visits. Video clip. Video clips. I sent Bronson video clips. Of what, Jason? Stuff. Jenna's sheep stuff. I mean, you know. That's right. Yeah. It's nice to be able to. Wherever you are. Yeah. Wherever you are. Like, what do you think? Yeah. Now I know if I call Wyatt and he doesn't answer. Oh, he's. He is straight up screening your phone. Yeah. He's swiping. But he answered. He answered. He's like, hello. That, I was out on a ridge glassing. Yeah. It's kind of a type. So you didn't even need it then. I didn't even need it. It was back in your truck. Yeah. It's always in the truck. Oh, yeah. You can't say always. I imagine you with like a backpack battery. Well, if you had a horse. Solar panels. Solar. I'm not dead. Wyatt does not like to miss much. Not that dedicated to it. You thought. Yeah. I was going to say. You thought Wyatt was on top of stuff before. Oh. Geez.

He ain't missing anything.

He's good at it. That's why I've thrown out a couple things I saw over the weekend. I'm surprised Wyatt said he didn't see it. That shocked me. Yeah. Shocked me. About certain this or that that got killed here or there.

Surprised me. Yeah. It's pretty dialed. You don't tell Wyatt new news very often. No. It's pretty. In the hunting world. No. You don't. It's. Yeah. He's good at what he does. I think sometimes. He's staying on top of some stuff. I think sometimes he just pretends he doesn't know it'll make you feel good about killing him in full. Maybe gets a different angle from you than he's heard in reality. But I don't think it's ever surprising him. Anyway. So let's see. All right. So what are we going to talk about? We do have some hunts we're giving away. Pretty awesome. Yeah. An awesome lineup of hunts. Yeah. That deadline. Well. What? Third? Third. Fourth of November. Third. November 3rd. An odd day. Yeah. I think it's a Monday. It's just we usually. Very short. We usually do that while we're here in the office because we realize we've done them in

the past years ago on a Saturday or Sunday and realize if somebody's got problems with the internet or. Yeah. Where they're at. Pick up. Give a call. Yeah. We're giving a Yukon doll sheep hunt away. Do you want me to be the official Epic Javelina consultant? Yeah. All the calls we ever get. I think your dad and I went down there. And me and me. And you were there too? And yeah, Colton too. Begs the question, Wyatt, as an official score, have you been sent an official score sheet yet and know what the minimums are? For Pope and Young or BNC? Saw that they come out with some information on it. I can't remember if there was a score sheet included. Is it just going to be length and width? Is it just going to be length and width like lions and bears? Are they going to measure the tusks too and add those? No. It's just a length and width right there. They've actually. Logie's got it pulled up there. 14 and 5 sixteenths is both the awards and all time it looks like. 5 sixteenths? Giant. Yeah. That's weird. It's got to be over a quarter? All the awards all time because there's no precedent set. So it's got to be over a quarter. Like where did that? You measure all skulls and sixteenths. I know, but like you don't have a minimum at a 5 sixteenth.

It's like a round number most of the time. Like mountain goats, 50. It's not 49 and 13 sixteenths. I feel like it could have went 14 and a half. Or a quarter. Or a quarter. It's a 1 sixteenth over a quarter, right? Well, there's definitely experts out there and that's not us. Obviously. I mean, that's just an interesting. Name another one that is such an odd number. I know we measure them. About the lower jaw. But name one that an official entry in the book is on a really odd 5 sixteenth like that. I believe skulls. I think it'll be lions and bears. Lions 15. Bears 21. But I think there's. They're round. Are they all round? Well, Barrett Pope and Young's 18 on a bear. I think BNC's 21. Lion is 15. It might be a very specific size.

Jeez. For a consistent size. How do you know all this? Cougar, your awards is going to be a change too. Right there. You just had it pulled up there. It's just as. Just. Like you said, Jason. There's a lot of. Javelina enthusiasts that put their. That. That a quarter wasn't good enough. It needed to be a 5 sixteenth. Was that 14 and 8 sixteenths? So 14 and a half? I can't tell what that is. That's a half at least. But 5 sixteenth. That looks like an 8. They're stingy with the mountain lion ones. Yeah. They don't want you to see them. You're in the wrong. Cougar and Jaguar. All right. Well, anyway. Just seems like. Most of them. Like mule deer. 190 and 230. Yeah. What else? I mean. Elk. 260 and 375. Well, I think it should be 190 and an 8. I mean. You know how many 190 evens are in there? How does that happen? Go ahead. Go ahead, Bronson. What are you saying? 230 evens.

A lot of stuff gets. A lot of manipulating on the back end? No. It doesn't happen. Come on. Possibly. There's no way. 180. 190. Can you imagine? I'd still be happy if I killed a 229 and 7 8s, but. Yeah. Let me kill one of them right now. It's hard right now. Oh, yeah. You ever measured a 229 and 7? I've measured some that have barely missed the book. Yeah. Have you? Yeah. You feel like a heel? Yeah. Yeah. Don't you? It doesn't make you feel very good, I guess. No. They're not offering to buy you dinner. Have to break the news to them. Yeah. We missed it by 3 8s of an inch, but nothing I can do. Especially when they thought they killed a 238 buck. Yeah. That's happened too before. Should have been well within the book, Wyatt. How'd this get beat down? They're already taking, you know, glamour shots with their belt buckle that they won. Yes. It was silver. You know what I mean?

Turned to bronze. Anyway. Silver turned to bronze. All right. Moving right along. So let's talk about the elk. Yeah, Devin. Devin. Devin, you smashed a bull. We're going to get straight up to it. Yeah. But not an easy year. Like, overall. You had a second season, right? Yeah. 15th to the 24th. Set us up. I started the 17th. For the New Mexico report. Yeah. So I applied with one of our outfitters in the guide draw. Got lucky. Okay. I think I had 3.5% odds or something. Is there anybody that gets luckier than Devin? Devin, draw some tags. I'm serious. You got to apply. It's not like the best unit. First come, first serve. I mean, they did the whole resident, non-resident thing because of you. I stayed up all night. And Wyatt. That's what you said. Maybe. You got one. Maybe. We hit it hard. I got an archery. You can't call that luck when Wyatt's waking up at 3 a.m. I'm staying up all night.

We hit it hard, man. You guys were. Were you in your 20s that year still? No. I haven't been in my 20s. Oh, come on. Well, that's been. How old are you? That's been four or five years ago. I'm going to be 37. Do I have to go to your Facebook profile? You will not be 37. I'm going to be 37. Okay. I'm like, do I need to go look up your birthday and your Facebook profile? The fact that you even thought that. Yeah, I'm concerned. I got called 50 twice in Alaska. That's right. By who? Yeah. By who? Yeah, I remember that. Was that offensive? Was it by one of the locals? It kind of was offensive. He was offended. What did they say? Was it by a local? Stood on it for a while. Did they? Anchorage. Why would you care what they said? Did they call you 50-year-old? Hey, 50-year-old. Or just, hey, old-timer. What did they call you? No. No. It was like. I was sitting there at the dinner table.

And my kid sent me a Snapchat. I guess it wasn't my kid. Do you need the senior discount? My wife sent me a Snapchat of my kid. Okay. And I was looking at it. And she looked over at my phone. It says, what'd she say? You have Snapchat? What are you, like 50? That's what it is. Oh. And she's your waitress? No. She was the other guy. So we'd met up with a group of people in Alaska that worked for the outfitter we were with up there. Okay. Just a friend of a friend. A friend of a friend kind of deal. And he had his wife and kids at dinner with us. And I was just. You don't think much of her anymore. Wow. You have Snapchat? What are you, like 50? That's funny. Are you, like 50? That is funny. Yeah. It was. It hurt. Yeah. And by the way, I have Starlink, too. Do you got that? I mean, dude. It stung a bit. Wow. So. Ouch. She knows how to really hurt a guy. Yeah. Kneecap stuff right there. Yeah.

So I had to come home, trim the beard up a bit, you know, get a little bit shorter, closer to the face. Did you? Yeah. Try to look a little bit younger. Do a little comb in brown.

I didn't go that far. No, just for men. All right. Well, how did we get on that subject? But anyway, yeah. So there you are, your 37-year-old young strapping man. He started into New Mexico. He started into New Mexico. Three, three percent. Three and a half or something percent chance. How does this happen? It's not even that good of a, it's not like a top unit. No, I know. It was my third choice. Well, we preached that. I was excited. Yeah. Yeah. But you take 15 other units other than that. Oh, yeah. For sure. That was just one to go. Yeah. Yeah. But, yeah, so I started, I didn't hunt the first two days because I thought I was going to be somewhere else, which didn't end up panning out. And so, yeah, I went down on the 17th and I killed Saturday. It's pretty crazy. The 20th. But it was, so it was a fast kill. Like on paper, you'd be like, yeah, it was a great hunt. It was a great hunt.

Yeah. The first, so me and my dad went with me. He was, he wanted to go on another elk hunt with me and I called him. I said, there's really not, I don't think I'm going to be here more than another day. And he was pretty, he was ready. He's been ready to go. So, so we, we went down there, we're setting up camp and, you know, when the guide draw, you can't hunt without a guide. Yeah. At least for your, at least for your, legally. Legally, yeah. So my guide was showing up that night or early in the morning to hunt the next day and this, we're setting up camp and this bull is cranking right down the draw from camp. And we're just like, this is going to be incredible. We pick a random place to camp. Like we don't, we've never been there. We don't really know. So anyways, that was the only bull we heard for the next 48 hours.

I think we might've heard one squeak the next afternoon or the next morning, but yeah, it was pretty slow. Not tough for a little bit. It was tough. And I hunted Thursday morning in this, in this spot. And then I heard one bull bugle three times. I mean, that's, that's all you got. That's all I had. Yeah. And then I went back Friday cause I wanted to be closer to where that bull was in the dark. And me and my dad go in there and it was just, it was on fire. They were cranking. How does this happen overnight? Generally it takes a cold snap or. It was supposed to rain on Friday. They, when I looked at the weather and it was kind of cloudy, but it didn't, temperature didn't change. They felt something though. It was something with the weather. Barometric pressure or something. They felt something. I think I drew, I drew back on one bull, let him go.

And I, I didn't, I mean three others within 40 yards. I didn't kill just bulls. Six points. Just, just little fives. Five and six points. Yeah. And it's not like you're being like extremely picky cause it's a, it's a tough year. B, you're not. Yeah. You don't go here to kill it. I mean, we, you're not, you're not holding out for a three 70 bull. No, no. I'm not passing bulls expecting to kill a giant. But, but any of the units you could kill a three 50 bull or something like that. Yeah, it could. You know, my brothers found one the morning I killed, they were further away and it was probably three 40 kind of dumber than crap. You could have killed it. Yeah. Is that the day you killed? Yeah. Are you like, I like the bull I killed. I'm good with it. Yeah. It's cool. Really cool. So anyways, Friday, I get sucked into this nasty, you know how elk do that.

They're just crazy and you're like, we're going down in there. It's an easy go down. And I'm like, I'm going to go 50 yards. Maybe I'll see him. Then he's cranking again. I'm like, ah, just to that tree. Next thing you know, you're in the bottom. Yeah. Yeah. You know? And anyways, chase bulls till 11, 1130 noon. Wow. It was, it was fun. Those days go quick. They're nice. They do, man. So how'd the routine go? Were you calling? What were you doing? A lot of people don't like to roll. They just like, if they're talking, they want to just get between them. I called in, like there was bulls alone that were moving and I was cutting them off. And if I felt like they were going to get past me, I'd cow call. And I called one in that way. But for the most part, I was just silent. Yeah. They were doing all the talking. I didn't need to let them know I was even there.

But the wind was just, that was one of those days too. Friday was every time. It didn't matter what I did. The wind was bad. Oh. I hate this. Like I left bulls because the wind go over here and it's going up the total opposite way. Like I could not beat the wind that day. It was just weird. Did you stay in that canyon all day and hunt it that night? No, I hunted there until like noon. It got kind of windy and they all shut up. I could hear, I thought I heard another hunter down there just got there late, you know. So I got out and then. Little PVC pipe sound. I think that night.

What did we do that night? Ate dinner. Oh. I went to another spot that Eric, the guide, saw a big bull. Did he? Yeah. And it was with another bull. So I hunted, I saw three bulls together and he saw three bulls together that same morning. They were still together, but kind of talking. Yeah. He had a pair of them that went into some pines and so I sat in there and nothing happened. This is like the 19th of September. Yeah. That was the 19th. Next morning, go back to the same spot. I hunted on Friday and hear one bull go over there and he was just a five point, but he had like 10 cows. Just let him go, kind of. He was, I had him at like 70 yards. Just saw him and like, oh, let's keep going, you know, go to the next one. And the next one was probably, I don't know, 500 yards away. And we, we actually like kind of boogied past him for the wind. And Eric was with me and we, we circled.

As soon as we got that wind right, he was about to go off this rim. And he cow called and he just fired back. Just growl or just, oh, you know, just, just, it's exactly what you want. So he's probably alone. So I boogie in there. Yeah. I get, I know he's going to probably go to this way to the wind wall, but I had a lane to my left and right. And sure enough, dude, he come through this big snag, moves his head back. And all I saw was like, he's a good looking bull. Like he's heavy. You know what I mean? I didn't see he had a little, would you see all of his cheaters? Two extras. All of his cheaters. I didn't see those extras. Cheater and a weird beam devil. It's like six inch. It didn't matter. He came, he came through and I ranged his tree and just, it was just classic, man. Drew, drew while he went behind a tree. As soon as he came out the other side, I stopped him. What was it?

Like 37 yards. Flop. Double long? I actually hit him in the heart. You did? Yeah. Wow. Armpitted him. Well, the funny thing is, so I shoot and I was like, ah. Well, half his body was like covered by some oak leaves. And I remember thinking like, just put it on because your arc, you know. And it just tucked right in there. But I was like, ah, it might've been low. Because I couldn't see when it hit, you know, because of the leaves. You heard it. Oh yeah. I saw it. And then I saw it. I saw him snap it off when he turned it. And about, he snapped off like eight inches. But go over there. And you know, we wait a little while. And then I walk like 10, 20 yards. So I probably went 50 yards, maybe 60 yards on his track. Found a shade spot.

Sat down for 45 minutes. I stand up. Was your owner, was he there with you? Yeah. Your dad too? Yeah. We were texting him, telling him to head our way. You know what I mean? And satellite text, by the way. I didn't even need starting. Yeah. Forgot the game bags. But anyways, sat there for 45 minutes. I stand up. I go look at the track. I look over, he's laying there dead. He didn't even go 100 yards. Oh, wow. Didn't go 100. It's awesome. He was that close to falling off in an absolute abyss of a, like, rolling type canyon. But yeah, it was fun. Just a classic call in a bull. Smash. I don't know. Like, I've had that happen, but I passed him, like, on really good units, really good tags. And I was really picky. Yeah. I went home without a bull. Yeah. Sick of that. Or the one bull I killed, like, stalked him like a deer. Yeah. You know what I mean? He was bedded, snuck in there.

When he stood up, I shot him. Just not a classic, just like you would see on TV. Yeah. Slam dunk. But it was fun. I had a lot of fun. That's awesome. Yeah. Old sucker. You guys saw his teeth. I showed you a picture. Yeah. The first picture I got was the upper jaw of an elk's roof of his mouth. And they're disgusting. They are. It's kind of like. Usually there's grass. I just believe it. I wish I had to send that as a first picture. I thought they would come together. You say there was water everywhere. I mean, probably green everywhere. Everywhere. Feed everywhere. Been raining. You mean? A little bit late summer. Yeah. This is high. We were at 9,000 feet. Yeah. There's puddles. There's also late summer rains. I don't know what it was like in. Yeah. It looked. May, June.

Awesome experience. You'd do it again. I would do it again. Yeah. Just a fun elk hunt. That's the thing about New Mexico is you're never burning points trying to get X out of your points. You know, I got to milk all the trophy potential out of my points or it was a waste of 10, 15, 20 plus years. It's never that. That's right. Yeah. If you're hungry, you're hungrier for a tag. I mean, it's hard to say three and a half percent. You got real aggressive. That's still pretty tough odds. But you know what I mean. I could be wrong, but I thought that's what it was in my mind. But I'll have to look it up. Whatever it was, it wasn't 10%. Yeah. And you know what's crazy? The thing I really liked? I saw two hunters the entire time. That's what gets me. Were they hunting elk or deer? I saw two other hunters. They were hunting elk. Well, yeah. No, they were hunting elk. But that country's giant.

I didn't see one camp with hunters in it that I was like, for sure those are hunters. They were mostly just families and people camping or whatever. Well, it's a popular place to just go. I mean, where I went, I was walking down a road. It wasn't even closed. There hadn't been a truck on it or anything for weeks. It wasn't even a closed road? Nope.

Wide open Forest Service main road. And I'd just walk it and call bulls. That's why they call it the Land of Enchantment. It was cool. I don't know. Were you in the right unit? Did I ever crush the road? You might have just gone lucky or like somebody. You're like, man, either the season's not on or my calendar's off. Oh, my dad said straight up. He's like, Devin, are you sure this hunt's going on? Because there's nobody here. I'm like, you're right. But yes, it's the same every year. 15th and 24th. Yeah. It was fun. It was cool. Oh, my brothers were there. They came the next day. So it was fun to have two of my brothers there and my dad. Did you cut him up? The next day? No, they were there the day before. Oh, okay. They were there. That's what I meant. Yeah. Okay. Did you cut him up right then and call him out or drive to him or what? Do you have a far pack? We just quartered him.

Here you go. To a brother. And they'd walk through the truck about 200 yards. 100 yards. Oh, man. That's awesome. But I'm telling you. There are some. There's a lot of that. If he would have had a little bit more life, we'd have been there a long time. He would have made up some hurry going downhill. He got lucky. He got back in a perfect spot. Did you take some pictures like in a backpack where you were packing him out? You know. Try to be cool. Social media stuff. No. No? I didn't even film anything, actually. I didn't have anything. Yeah. I was just there running and gunning. I was too scarred about some of those GoPro. Videos he took on the last out cut. Some things you don't need to relive, you know. Yeah. Circling the unit twice a day. Right. We did, too. And we'd leave camp at like 5 a.m. and get back at 10 p.m. most days. But he was staying in Utah.

He sat in the passenger seat and slept from about 5 to 6 a.m. And Logan drove and was on his second monster by the time we got to the actual deer spot. Wow. You know, when you get old, that's what you have to do. Yeah. You do. Yeah. Logan, I mean, that's what you do to spend priceless time with your dad. Highly favored in the will. Oh! Oh!

You're going to get an all broken down truck. That's what you're going to get. See, we have that discussion too because, you know, all my kids, they can't say anything good about my new truck. They are always just dissing on it. It's a Chevy, what is it? Is it a 1500 ZR2? Yeah. Yeah. With the 6.2 gasser. And I can't believe the gas mileage you're getting. What are you dissing on, Logan? I've never dissed on it before. I love it. He's lying. He wants the truck at his will. That's exactly right. All the while, Logan had to get his fixed, right? I had to have a Ford towed back to town. It's okay. It happens. Sometimes you have six plugs go out all at once and you just got to get them fixed. Wasn't it coils? It was a coil. Yeah. So one of Logan's buddies was with us and, I mean, I just told him he's in line for the

truck because all my boys are like not in line for it because they can't say anything good about it. Yeah. There you go. He's giving away stuff to free to people who don't even relate to us. As if you're going to die tomorrow. Paul, you got some life. I know. Not even blood. I know. You're fine. Fortune favors the potential. Yeah, I'm good. Good, healthy guy. Got a few ailments here and there, but you're getting along. I got a battery that runs my heart, but it's fine. Yeah, you're dealing with a pacemaker and 14 other things. You're fine. You're fine. If I go into AFib again, we're just going to hook the jumper cables to my chest and get me back on track. That's what they do anyway. Geez. Remotely, right? Can't they do it from Elon Musk's system or something? They could. They could with, they can put a pacemaker in that does that, but mine doesn't. Geez.

So anyway, I'm conversing you quite regularly on Starlink. That's the one thing is you guys call at weird hours of the night when you're driving. I mean, they're driving for hours and they're like wanting to talk. And I've got Starlink. You've got Starlink. So I can't screen your call and feel good about it. I know. No.

We were just checking on you. We wanted to see how you were doing. Well, we were good. Okay. It's true. Just making sure. So anyway, you drew this tag, regular draw. Yep. Odds were way against you. You get the tag. Kind of a tough year. Right. But you guys scouted a lot. John scouted a lot. Yep. We grinded it out. We ran a bunch of cameras. We didn't really find a deer in scouting that we wanted to shoot.

And so the first day we were driving along and, well, we went and looked in this one area and anyway, we didn't find anything. And so we drove down to this other area and spent the rest of the day there. And on the way home, we're going down this graded road and two big old bucks run across the road in front of us. I think you called me within a minute of that. I think you're right.

And it was in, I mean, it was a flat. But you guys don't take very good video. I was going to say. I don't know. You can't see anything. Logan, did you take that video? With my youthful eyes, I could see everything I needed to. Well, you had your mind playing it back while you were watching video. You actually had seen it. I'd seen it. It's like, okay, use your imagination. Here's some video. And it was like, I see a tree and I think I see a deer. I'm not sure. Anyway, but regardless, that's where you're going to start focusing time, right? So all of a sudden we're like, okay, now we have a spot to hunt, but we don't know how to hunt it.

And because there's no vantage points. You can't climb on a hill and glass when you've got cedar trees and sagebrush everywhere. So there was about 50 yards of visible landscape on the side of each road. And so the next morning we went there and we saw some more deer, a couple of nice bucks, not the same deer we saw the night before. And we figured out there was a little loop that we could take. We could drive down the Graded Road, go up this two tracker and then go back and forth. And we did that like 12 times a day. Sounds like a tactic Wyatt coined is slow rolling the pines. What did I say? Definitely slow rolling the pines. We were definitely slow rolling the pines. Minersville style. Minersville style. The thing of it is, is Logan, his slow and my slow are very different. Yeah. Well, you've got it perfected. These young kids don't know how to do it.

He's gotten weak and scared in his old age and I know how to get places. Well, it's probably just cussing you because that ZR2 doesn't have a cruise control that sets at two and a half miles an hour. Yeah, you've got, it's 25 or 25 plus. That one will go down to 15. It will? Yeah, 15. He figures. Wouldn't let me go any lower. All right. The hill descent control doesn't work on flat ground. Jeez. So you're just. Anyway, so we keep doing that and we see some deer and we can't get a shot and we see some deer and we can't get a shot because it's like you see them and they take one step and they disappear for days. But if you walk in there on foot, they're blowing everywhere and you're done. Yeah, you can't. It's like walking on gravel. You did track the two big ones to their water. I did. Yeah. The next day. Yeah.

The next day after the two big ones I did, I got on the tracks and I tracked them right to their water, which is, we didn't know about that. And if we kept hunting it and we'd see, we had this one group of deer, there were four bucks and one of them, it looks like a white tail. Also, it's a giant three point and it is a cool deer. It's got like eight or nine inch eye guards and just. What? And, you know, and so anyway, we didn't, we just kept passing, passing, passing. Finally, I don't know what day it was. We saw two, two bucks and both of them were shooters. And so they came out and stood at 130 yards and I missed. Wow. It just about killed me. And that's an open site state. So I'm, I'm not even. Yeah. That's very doable. I just, I just flat missed and we come to find out that my Williams peep had accidentally got turned a little and yep. And it was off.

So I recited, got things back on track. And anyway, we went back to hunting. Okay. And so we, we making the loops around there and we come across these deer. This was Saturday morning and this was a buck we'd never seen before. And so Lane and Logan are trying to look through the, their binoculars at this deer. And I got out and I think they would have tied me in the truck if they could have, but they couldn't. So. And all in the, he's telling us to judge for him when he gets out, we're in charge of judging. Because you've got to be quick. When Paul gets out, stuff's dying. When he gets in charge of making the shoot or don't shoot call. So when his feet hit the ground. I think there's five legit long times on that one. We had, we had the discussion about trigger words that you don't say that will get the trigger pulled. Like what? Well, because the day before. Like split beams.

The day before when he'd missed, I was with him when that deer came out. And I'm looking and I'm like, ah, I'm like, I think he's a good buck and he's got cheaters. Boom. And I'm like, okay, cheaters is a trigger word. We don't say cheaters until we're sure of what it is. And it turns out, come to find out five points is also a trigger word. And we found that out. That's a good little five pointer right there. He's a cool, he got a cool extra. He can pick it up from there. What about eight inch eye guards? I heard that a minute ago. That, that, well, that's a trigger. We started driving past that three point and he's getting out of the truck and I just took off.

Eight inch eye guard. It was a sweet buck. It was? Yeah, it was awesome. It's a big three point. Is it? With nine inch eye guards? I don't know about that, but it's big. At least six or seven? Yeah. Like, have you seen that buck in my office? That three by four in my office? I'll have to come look after. Very similar. I've got one in my office with about five. Devin's yours about five, five and a half? Five. Yeah. They look, they look gay. Three points this year are trophy bucks on any year, on normal year. Like, the drought creates big old fours down to three bucks. Three points with great eye guards. Yeah, it does. Right? And real potential. Maybe a couple of nubs where the four used to come out or whatever. Yeah, something. Purling. Purling gets bucked. Kill this tough year. It does. This is a tough year. So, anyway. Right, Paul? Right. So, I'm out of the truck and I hear a five inch.

He's got an inline five or something. I don't know what he said. He's got five points on one side. Well, that was it. That's all I needed to hear. Boom. And I threw up the gun freehand and dumped him right there. And he dropped and it was over that fast. Wow. That's the buck. Okay, I didn't know we were there already. That's this buck. We were there faster than any of us expected to be. This was like, what, 80 yard shot? 50? Offhand? 60? 50, probably 50, 60. Top pin. Well, there it was. Yeah. So, Logan, you were there. Was one of your other boys there, Paul? No? No, just you that day. Just Logan. Logan, one of my buddies, Lane, and one of Logan's buddies, McCoy. Gotcha. Pretty awesome. Pretty fun. Yep. It was awesome. We had a good time. It was worth it. You'd do it again? Of course. Oh, you'd absolutely do it again. That's awesome. That's awesome. Yep. Love it. All right.

Now, how's the elk hunt look overall? What do you think about elk hunt? The elk hunt is tough. I have one bull that I'm hunting, and we haven't been able to turn him up when I've been there. We sent Logan's buddy, McCoy, out there one day just to check, and he drove right on him 100 yards and took an hour's worth of video of him. Jeez. Jeez. And anyway, we're hunting in an area where I think there are 25 total elk in probably, I don't even know, maybe a 10-mile radius. Who knows? Yeah. Yeah. So the elk are, and the rut is poor. The rut is very, very slow, and with the drought, I'm a little worried the cows aren't going to cycle or they're not going to cycle normally. Yeah. And so we're just, I don't know, tomorrow we're going to hit it again, and we've got till, we've got like eight days left, so we're going to go try to turn that bull up every day and get him killed. Yeah. Jeez.

So you've had a month, month and a half. It must be nice. Well, you know. You've been out for how long? You've worked how much? Well, I worked today. Probably some problems. You've fixed it in the world. Well, let's see. It's September, what, 22nd today? 22nd. The last day I worked before today was September 9th. Jeez. I don't have to be back to work till October 6th, but I will get back before then. Hey, sign me up. So. There's going to be some Dems that need your help. Can you imagine going to talk to Jason? I could go do antelope anytime. I'm just waiting for Sean. That's what really matters. Letting him figure out his work schedule. Yep. Let him drive up while you sleep in the passenger side. I will drive and be hitting the rumble strips tired, and I will not let them kids drive. The minute he gets in there, it's not like I'd do it. Although, it's just fine. He does a great job. It doesn't happen. Like, if you go somewhere? When we go to dinner. Really? Yeah. She drives you to dinner? Because when I go to dinner, mentally, we don't have to hit the stoplight just right. We don't have to pass the cars just right. There's no bump drafting. No, but when we're going to do something when it's like I need to drive. When you're in charge of what you're going to do. Yeah. Like, if we need to make it to St. George on time before the store closes, like, I need to drive. And she's great. She's great. There's nothing wrong with her driving. But then when we go to dinner, I like to be driven. Is that weird? Around town, Becky drives all the time. And most of the time. Yeah. She'll also get carsick if we travel. Like, if I go to one cell or somewhere and I'm driving down the Sandefeld, Windy, and I leave the cruise at 84 miles an hour, she gets carsick. Yeah. I was kidding.

Well, there's a lot of times she drives. When we unload the boat, like, I unload the boat, I go around, get in the boat. Like, you know what I mean? Go back. And she'll park the truck. But, like, you know, I just want things way out on them, you know. Anyway. All right. All right. Let's call it a day. We got a lot going on. We're killing animals. We've already killed some other animals. I'll bet in seven days we got five or six animals to report on. It'll be fun. Huh? It's a good time. Next six to seven days. Wyatt, you need to be a little less picky. I feel like I got pressure on me now. I don't know what's going on in your household. Well, you've got a tag. I need to be less picky. You've got a deer tag and an elk tag. I've got a deer tag. I need to get out and hunt. I've got tags. On my own personal tags. But we've been hunting nonstop. Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. Anyway.

It feels like, yeah, this next two weeks, we'll just call it. Maybe seven days was pushing up in two weeks. There could be a lot of storytelling. Logan, you've even got a tag opening up this week. Do you really want to go after it? Yeah. Yeah. I don't have time to hunt for myself. But, yeah, I do have a tag. Well, if you go hunt for yourself, you have to use your own gas cart on that hunt versus go hunt with your dad. These are all things that come into your mind. It's true. But if I wait until he's killed and then he comes and hunts with me, now he's got the same tag. But if you have his gas cart, you just fill up a fiver every time you use his gas cart. Well, there's always overages. And then you stash the gas can here. Overages. He calls them overages. You're rounding up. If it's a 36-gallon tank, you round up to 40 and save the four. Okay. Wow. Wow. Geez.
