EP 368: The Carter's Year of the Antelope and Hunting Updates So Far

Speaking of which, I need to talk to Devin about that. So, anyway, we've got a couple of those to do. And that brings us to Logie Bear. Oh, no. Having some vibration in the truck, huh? Yeah. A little more than some. Jeez. Have a lot. Lug nuts coming loose or what? You know, I really wish. Yeah. That would have been fantastic if it was a loose lug nut. What was it? Trading rims was the least of your problems. It's the space between fifth and sixth gear. Squeeze me? It's the shimmy between fifth and sixth gear. I had a friend when I was a kid. A consistent fifth, sixth gear problem. We were kids. His dad's truck. When you hit between, like, 35 and 45, you almost couldn't stay in the truck. And then, as soon as you got past 45, it'd smooth out. It was just bad. This one's about, you know, 65 to 75 is pretty bad. And then, once you get beyond that, you're good.

But that's a pretty important speed. Yeah, it's pretty common. That's very common. So, we're either driving real slow or real fast right now. Trying to get it worked out. So, what is it? The driveline, you joint problem? It's the transmission. It is the transmission. Full transmission you have to do? Yeah, probably. Well, he's doing a flush. And then, he's going to send it down the road to the next sorry sucker, right? Yeah. No.

You're going to tarnish my Facebook Marketplace reputation here. He's got an impeccable rating right now. I've got five stars. I don't want to lose that. I'm just teasing. But, seriously, though, you're going to do a flush. Flushing a filter. And they say sometimes I can, at the very least, that'll lengthen its life. Because when it starts to get that shimmy, it gets too hot. And so, a new fluid will just lengthen the life as much as you can get out of it. I don't know. That's great. We're playing the end game here. So, and then you're going to go help Cash. Are you going to jump in this truck and go help? No. No. Truck's staying here. I told him you don't need one. Oh, no. You could, I mean, there's a van up here and guys in cars and stuff like that. Toyota Corolla it is. Oh, yeah. Yeah. You'll get there. You get an uneven cattle guard, though, and hit that freaking hump in the middle and your oil pan's gone. And Logan, that would happen to Logan. It would. If it could happen, it would happen. Shocks would bottom out, hit the cattle guard and stick it up only two inches and done be done. Yeah, that's exactly right. All right. You seeing anything else out there that's interesting? Any lions or deer? How about any big deer? One buck was pretty solid. Really? Probably mid to upper 60s. Wow. I mean, just a nice buck, you know? Yeah. Pretty. How many bears?

Yeah, I mean. How many bears so far? So far, no bears. There's more bears there. So far. I know. Maybe anywhere I found it. Yeah. So, there's a canyon in that yard that is no joke. You know, a lot of bear.

Okay. We thought we'd get an update. Yeah, nothing solid. Lots and lots of dinks, but we're picking through them anyway. All right. Well, we wish you the best of luck. Okay. Yeah. We'll need a little bit, but hopefully we work in a lot. Do you have a goal in mind? Oh, I'd like to kill something 320 or better, you know? Yeah. But at the same time, depends on what you see, too. I will say, if I look clear out here in the horizon, there are a lot of snow-capped mountains. Wow. Like, it got some pretty good snow up there at like 12,000. Wow. Yeah. Priscilla meant business. That's the one that they're calling, coming from California right now? Is that... I saw a big one coming from California. California. So what was the... Oh, no. This one's more central. It's just a big storm. We got Priscilla and Raymond? I haven't heard about... What did we have in between that? Like a quade or... Just a lot of rain. No, you just had the... Rain and wind. Offspring of Priscilla just, you know, spawning and spinning and, you know, wings. But they go down the alphabet. I want to know what the Q one was. How did we skip the Qs? I don't know.

I have to Google that. Discrimination. What's a good Q name? Quinn. Quinn. Quinn. Quade. Yeah, because it was Priscilla, so it had to be masculine. But we went right... Went to R. Yeah. Yeah. It feels like the deer that we've killed has got back fat like none other. Two inches of it. Are they? Yeah. Great. It makes you wonder if we're going to have an early winter or a long winter. Or both. I don't know. You know what I mean? Let's just have a... I want a winter. It would be a good... We didn't have a... It would be an awesome hunt in Colorado if we got a pretty good winter coming on by then. But anyway, all right, Cash. We're going to let you go. Okay. I've got one spotted up. Jana's truck's been a good truck. But one of my brother-in-laws understandably asked, have you ever driven it? No. Because I was saying how awesome it is. He's like, have you ever driven it? I said, no. And he goes, oh, maybe it's all right then.

Maybe it is. All right. So what are we going to talk about here on this podcast? First off, we've got the Epic Hunt giveaway, right? Yep. So we're coming down to the final stretch. Can you believe it? He like came out yesterday. No, it's a short, short giveaway. So the entry period is very, very short. Shortest ever. Deadline of November 3rd. Right? Yeah. These are all for hunts in 2026. Bronson, tell them what we're giving away. Well, three hunts. I think they total about 70,000, just a hair over. But first one's a Yukon doll sheep hunts for the opening week. Season opens August 1st in the Yukon for doll sheep. But get there a few days already to be able to get packed in. Be sitting there kind of like cash intended to do. Be sitting there dead red on July 31st, August 1st. And that's what this, that's when we bought these hunts four years ago. Bought several of them.

Anyway, awesome opportunity. We've had a lot of members. Kill rams there with North Curl. Great outfit. You know, get yourself to Whitehorse. Everything's pretty much included from there. So then we also have, like we've had before many times, a Nevada 231 gut fully guided hunt with White Rock Outfitters. This is a landowner tag included in that hunt. Get a choose seven day period, I believe it is. Within whichever season, archery, muzzle, or rifle. If you go on one and don't kill, you've got the option to either rebook some more days later or hunt on your own or whatever. It's got a lot of flexibility. Landowner tags in Nevada are good for deer at least on all seasons within that specific unit. And this is, again, 231, one of the famed units. Southeastern Nevada. A lot of big deer. A lot of big deer over the years. John spent a lot of time in there the last few years.

Today when he pulled in, he came in hot to the office today. He came in. Well, screeching. Yeah, I thought. Like I'm not buying a used vehicle from him. I was like, man, he's mistreating this vehicle. Well, but the reason you're not is because you owned it before him.

That's a good case. That's a valid point. That was quick, by the way. That was quick. So those are the two. Then we've got a couple of antelope punts. What's Jason? I mean, geez, your family killed three or four. I don't know how many. Can't kill enough of them. What are you guys doing with all this antelope meat you guys got? Eating it. Are you? Yeah. How? Summer sausages. Jenna won't eat it. I mean, she would. If she was starving to death, she may or may not eat it. She would. I think so. Bottled it, man. That'd be good bottled. She's had some bad experiences. Has she? Yeah, maybe they didn't die right away. I don't know what the problems were. So according to Devin, if they just tip over and they're grass-fed, you're fine. I've had them both ways, honestly, too. And I felt like I did the exact same to both. So I think there is some uniqueness to the individual animal.

Partially maybe at how hard you ran them or whatever stage of the rut they're in. But anyway, this is a pair of antelope tags here in Utah on the Mount Dutton-Potsagon unit. Two of them for you and a buddy, family, friend, whatever. You want to make her raise her eyebrows. So you know there's certain parts that you're required to take, right? Quarters and backstrap, tenderloin, whatever. What are you, bringing neck meat home? Every time I take the neck meat. Every time. And she's just looking at me like, you know what I mean? Yeah. But anyway, so yeah. On an elk, that's a heck of a roast. It is. And a hamburger. It's a hamburger. Lots of stuff. You know? It's great. So anyway, yeah, it's summer sausages. So yeah. Yeah, it's been an interesting run that way. Yeah, the way it worked out. You wouldn't believe how many comments people come up with on, oh, nice to see Jason Mealy-Carter

with an antelope, you know? Let alone three or four. Doing my job. I'm doing my job to rid the earth of them. Well, we've also talked about, somewhat jokingly but not, in tough years in this desert southwest stuff where we live, southern Utah, maybe Nevada, you know, northern Arizona, whatever. When we get years like this, it's time to hunt horn game and stags. Sheep and antelope and goats. And goats. Maybe a moose. And stags. Whatever draw tag. That's right. Stuff like that. So which, you're just following your own advice is all you're doing. You're going hunting horn game. Well, you know, and last year, remember all the big antelope pictures we got in? Like, there was just loads of them last year. And so far this year, like Nevada and that, I think it's been pretty good, too. And Arizona's even killed some pretty good bucks. Feels like last year was better for Wyoming. I don't know why.

It just kind of feels that way. Well, you've got to also remember, this season keeps going for about another two weeks. Oh, yeah. They kill whack. I know. They whack some giant bucks the end of October. This weekend, I saw some on the ground. I'm like, geez, I kind of want to go back. Really? No. It was a lot. I don't know how many bucks we passed, but it was over 100 for sure. It was wild. Pretty soon, you're just over it. Oh, Sean, Sean, I wish we could, we should call him. Well, I just remember last year going by myself. It's just not a fun hunt by yourself. Wyatt, you did it, too. Yeah. Did you go by yourself? Was it last year? It's just not fun. No, two years ago. Two years ago for you, last year for you. Devin went the same year Wyatt did a couple years ago. I think he had his wife and dad. I don't remember. But when you're literally by yourself, at some point, you're over it.

Yeah, it's challenging, too, with as much movement as they do when they're rutting and you're trying to keep track of the right buck. And range him and then get on your gun and all of that. It's quite fun. Any interesting scenarios like that? Well, we were in the middle of nowhere just sleeping out of the truck or whatever, just out on the ground. But it was, yeah, it was pretty fun. Yeah, it was pretty fun. It was, Sean, I mean, he loves to kill. Well, yeah. I mean, I don't know if I've met a guy that likes to kill like Sean does. And so he's like, Dad, that's a good one. And I'm like, okay, he's short-pronged. Okay, he's not super tall. Or he could be a little more massive. And, you know, we did after like, let's call it 76 bucks. 76, yeah. He just got quiet. He didn't care. He was over it. He was so over it. And I was like, what do you think? I don't know.

Tell me if I even need to look. You know, exactly. And I was like. Crush the next one. Yeah. Inside I was like, okay, he's got to kill. Crush the next one. It's time. So night came. He shot before you. Yeah, he did. Night came. The first day. Yeah. Yeah. First day. You went a full 12, 14 hours of shooting one. Oh, yeah. Wow. Impressive. I don't know. Some restraint. Anyway, he did smash a coyote. Like, I mean, there were some things that happened. Kept him going. Oh, I lost a range finder. I'm like, a sig. And I'm like, what the. I'm like, this is a problem. Did you sit it on the bed rail of your bed and drive off? Or what do you mean? Set it on the hood or something. It was like. Well, he was like. Dad, I want to smash this coyote or something. So we put the. So I got out. And it's going to be a long distance. It's going to be a long range shot. And then there was another one.

Like 20 yards. Another dog. And so then Sean takes off after him. They're out through the bushes. And I'm like sitting there. And then I. You know. So anyway, I get back in the truck. Well, I don't know where the range finder is at this point. You know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah. Did you find it? Yeah. So I went and hunted. And I'm like, I do not have a range finder. And it's built for my rifle. Like, I've got profile numbers. Such and such. Whatever. My prior one has. Was waterlogged. So I've got. I've got two. And now I'm using my backup. The other one's waterlogged. It's not turned on anymore. Is it just. Oh, it doesn't even work. Oh. Yeah, it doesn't even work. Yeah. I'm in profile. And I'm like. Oh. So. Anyway.

There's more to the story. But yeah. Plus or minus. We're out and about. And I'm like. And we're using Sean's. Yeah. Sean's got an element or whatever. And it's great. But it's not mine. Yeah. You know. So anyway. So I'm like. We got to go back. By the way. For the evening. Let's go. It's got to be back there by the car or whatever. Drove right up. Or sitting right on the road. I did the same thing with the para NL12s. NL Pure 12s last night. What? What? Yeah. I get back. Back. Way back into town. Getting gas. And I'm like. Where are my vino harness? Is light. Is light. Oh. I open it up. And I'm like. Oh. Where are they? You know. So I rip through the truck. Make sure I didn't just like set them next to me or something. I'm like. These are problems. Yeah. And then you start. I drive back to. You know. A point that I was on. They were sitting there. So. After you took them off the tripod.

You did drive all the way back? I drove all the way back. Yeah. John. Your life is hard. Dude. John's life is difficult. For a minute. I was like. Oh shoot. You know. Jeez guy. Well. Sometimes the project. When you get in the dark. Like I. Yeah. Well. You were going back to that point though. Weren't you this morning or no? Yeah. But. You're half panicked. Yeah. But what if they're not there? They could have fell off halfway between here and there. And the next dude. Coming up the road. Coming up the road. And is like. Oh. Got a new pair of 12s. New pair of 12s. Oh. Best trip I've ever taken. You know. So no. I went straight back. Wow. Anyway. So yeah. So then we were out and about. And. Yeah. We come up on a buck. And I'm like. Sean. That's. I don't know what we called him. A little heavy. Or something like that. Kind of. But he's heavy. You know. Anyway. He's like. I'm killing him.

And I'm like. No. No. I think you should look at him. He goes. I do not care. He's big enough for me. He's over. And he's over this double shot shot. He's. I mean. Everything. Since the beginning of time. Has taken two shots. Yeah. First shot's five feet high. Second shot. He smashes. Every time. Some kind of a thing. Plus or minus. And your other kids just. I mean. Ride him on it. Oh. He took it. He took my gun. I mean. It was. Dead on. One shot. And he goes. I broke the curse. I was like. Okay. Bumped the brakes. But it was awesome. All's well. Turned out good. Took care of him. Put him in the car. Cooler. And then off again. Finished hunting. And then right before dark. Found the buck. I killed him. The second night. Yeah. Then what? I was going to pass him. He's like. Dad. You just. Big in the pitchers. Carter. Yeah. He looks. He's a good buck. He is. He's heavy. He's.

High sixes on the masses. Like just. Look good to me. Anyway. If you had to guess why it was a Bencrocett score. Where would you think that buck would rank? Out of. Out of the top. No. I mean. Give me a number. Number. What it would rank. Or what it would score. No I don't care. I don't know what. It's got to be right there around 80. Yeah. It's got to be right there. Looks like. So anyway. We were. Yeah. So. I saw him and I'm like. I don't know Sean. Let's just. Let's just. He goes. Dad. You never like to kill anymore. He says. You just like to scout. And I was like. All right. Get out of the truck. Plug yours. Plug yours. Yeah. Plug yours son. Oh. Wind was crazy. So then my question is. So this was right at dusk. The second night. Did you. Do a cannonball run the whole night home and drive home? Yeah. I knew it. That's the only thing I know how to do. I knew he did.

We got home at 430 in the morning. And that's not a quick one. No. I mean that's a. Eight to ten. I don't know how far it took. Ten. Is Wyoming any better at the night. In the night time than it is the day time? Those are good questions. Saw bucks on the freaking pavement. Like. Real bucks. Like. You know how we're hunting the general here and everything. Yeah. But I mean four point bucks. Really? On the general side of the pavement. In Wyoming. Yeah. Rollins. Oh. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. So anyway. There's a. There's a. A little tidbit. For anybody out there looking to smash a mule deer at some point. Yeah. So the. The winter die off. Or. The really hard winter that Wyoming had. A couple years ago. Are the effects of that pretty much. You know. Overcome. Or. I don't know. Are we back to normal? They're pretty prolific I think. And then they. Yeah. They mature fast. So like.

While you were talking about it. Or. Maybe it was. One of the outfitters on the gram or something. But basically how. X amount in the top ten. Ever killed. Are like two years old. Yeah. A couple of. Three year old. The goats kind of deal. Yeah. Two. Three years. Two to three. You can kill them. And they're. They're big. And they're big. Mature. Instead of like a mule deer. Yeah. But then also I think there's got to be some kind of relationship between. You know. Less is better. Less is bigger. Right. You know what I mean. Yeah. Like when you have less of them. They're just. They do well. I don't know. All kinds of groceries. Yeah. For the ones that made it. Yeah. You know. All kinds of space. Food. Feed. Everything like that. I don't know about this unit. This unit was just a. I don't know. What you could draw basically. We've done it twice now. Yeah. It was.

It was one of those that Sean and I were like. Well let's go. Let's have a good time. It was kind of a plan attack. And we did it. Looked at the odds and did it. And. You know. But why. Maybe. Kind of what we're seeing on Mulder too. In places where. They only have a heavy die off. But then. The quality is actually pretty decent. Yeah. It seems like the quality comes back. Faster than the numbers come back. Yeah. That's a good way to put it. Those that are there just have all the space. Yeah. Eat the ice cream. I mean. They're all eating the best of the best. That's what I thought would happen in Nevada. And. There ain't nothing. It's still dry. Wyoming. At least. The normal year is fine. They get a lot of some range. Yeah. The topic did come up. Devin. Jason's family. With so much antelope meat. And what they're going to do with it all. I don't want to talk about it. Well. I mean. We're.

I would give you some. If you were okay with that. Well. I tried. Did you? What do you mean? I went to the butcher. And they're like. You got two new antelope in here. Right? And they're like. Yeah. I was like. He didn't. It didn't indicate you were coming to pick it up. Okay. So. In all fairness. No. What. What did you do with the back straps? Oh. They're probably somersault. Sausage. Devin. That's what they told me.

Sorry. I actually didn't even think. How does that make you sit? I actually didn't. I never take you serious. Because you say you would take it. And I'm thinking. There's nobody in their right mind that would take antelope meat. I believe him. Wyatt. We've heard it. Too many times. From his mouth. Did you ask him really? Yeah. Did you? Yeah. They said that he. He. He. He sausage the whole thing. I said. I want stuff in the office. And when I'm out in the hills. That's what they said. Yeah. They're like. He said he wanted sausage for the office. I was like. Well. A back strap. You know. I mean. I would have traded all the sausage for one back strap. So anyway. Or throw one of those on the smoker. Jeez. Man. It's all good. A little angry man. Someday I'll draw. Well. Anyway. It was a good time. I mean. And I did miss a little bit. Sean loves to talk about this.

Sean loves to talk about this. And I brought it up when we were hunting his deer. Was this the buck you killed? Yes. Or a different one that got away? Oh no. So. No. They don't get away. They just get to have a second chance of life. No wonder they. Or five chances of life. No wonder they're gamey. He's tasted. Dude. They did not run from my bullets. He didn't even know he was being shot at. The day after you got home. I ran into Sean. At the Zaxby's drive through. He ran up to my truck window. Of course he did. I've never seen him so giddy. Because double shot has been slightly teased in our family. He put that to bed. And watched dad shoot. He couldn't wait to tell me this story. It was 25, 30 mile an hour wind. And Sean had the range finder. Okay. And have you been in Antelope Country with a range finder? Good luck trying to do that. It's like that. It's 550. No, it's 750.

That was six and a quarter. I mean, finally he handed me the range finder. Yeah. He's like range it yourself. And I'm like, yeah, we're getting it. There's nothing harder. And at some point you're like. And then you look up the wind drift on a bullet out. And you're talking like 65 inches. At a 10 mile an hour. Yeah. Or 20. Depending on the range. Yeah. I mean, so anyway. We got closer.

And made him. Just smashed him. It was done. You know, not a problem. But anyway, Sean. Sean loves. You take one of your 30s up there. You're known to use a 30 up there. No. No, but I should have. Because it would carry through the wind. I should have taken a 338. What'd you take? You take a 6.5? What'd you take? 7. 7 PRC. Yeah. That's one thing about Wyoming. On a calm day, you get a 14 mile an hour wind. Yeah. Yeah. And you're in antelope country, which made me go back to the EL ranges. So what did I do when I came home? Order 7 EL range. For what? For what? The handhold range finders are just different. They're built different, bruh. You know what I mean? They're just not. They're 7 power. They say they're 7 or 8, but they look like nothing. They don't look it. They don't look it. No, they don't want to. Take an 8 or 10 power pair of binoculars.

It's 100% more magnification, it feels like. You know? Don't you think? And then, Wyatt, you're heavy on the EL range. I'm like, why does it? Again, what would Wyatt do? I've been using the 12s of lately. They're kind of handy. They're on a tripod. Yeah, and you're using one pair of binos. One pair of binos. Nothing in your pack except for a spotter. When you're packing, though, a little bit. Yeah, don't have to worry about leaving a range finder somewhere on a rock. You go back hours later for it. Yeah. When you're in flat country like that. I don't know. Even an EL range. Two eyes is better than one. Yeah, two eyes is better. Or another body. And you're more stable. It's everything about it. You go back to these little handhold. Maybe it's our age, Bronson. I don't know. But you go back to the handhold little range, which you use, I use. That's our system.

But you're starting to say, now, where was that deer? Because if they're far enough, you can't really see them that well in these range. No problem. There's little antelope bedded in the sage. I disagree. We're across the canyon in Colorado. Elk in flats can be a problem. Well, I think it's flats. That's the problem. Just any flat. Did you have that this year? Oh, yeah. Same thing. No, it was a year or two ago. Oh. I thought maybe with your Wyoming 100. 700, 300. Yeah. I've shot 100. I ended up looking on onyx and drawing a line to a little patch of trees and figuring out the yardage. And you used that? Dialed and killed them. I could not get a good. I mean, we could have averaged it, but you're guessing. Yeah. Yeah. So, anyway. Yeah, it was a. It's a real deal. Antelope ranging is a real. It's a real problem. Yeah. Real thing you're going to encounter. So flat. So much.

Or little undulation. Little. A bush that you hit that's 80 yards in front of it. And I knew all of it. It's like, you know it. And then when Sean's running the rangefinder, and then I'm just like, I mean, you know. Anyway. I think an EL range will help. So, anyway. That's where it's at. I call BS on the seven power on the rangefinders. No, it's like 1.2. Yeah. I don't know how they're measured. I mean, I'm serious. When you look through them, you're like. I know. There's no way. I don't even have one. Okay, well. I'm going to keep mine. I'm going to have a backup. You know. I've learned that I need backups. I've got one that's waterlogged. It won't turn on. I've got another one that just about got left in the hills. And so, anyway. I thought two was enough, but it's not. It's not. What else? Then the next day, you got home. Let's talk somebody else's story. Yeah.

You guys killed more species in the last week than this whole office. Well, and it was a gift. Because I'm like. The kids. I mean, they like to kill stuff. You know what I mean? Yeah. So, you start to align. And nothing ever seems to go right. You know, when you got dedicated hunter, it's kind of like. Just keeps going. Never stops. You know. So, anyway. Got out. Let's see. Went out with Ashley. Sean had to work. Went out with Ashley. It's now her turn. And. What was this hurricane called out here? Priscilla. What was it? Was it Priscilla? It was not, was it? It was. Google it. Yeah. Anyway. Just like. What did Priscilla. That thing. Was that through Mexico? Or when does Priscilla start and stop? Because it's been raining everywhere. I don't know. Forever. She's. She was angry. She's still angry. Yeah. Yeah. So, anyway. But amidst that, you went out there and fog. Yeah.

Just dealing with the fog. Missed the fjords. Ashley's like, well, this is a waste of a morning. And I'm thinking. She's right. I mean, anyway. Got lucky. Fog lifted a little bit. And we. Drove right into. Oh, dude. Really? I like. A herd of four points, okay? No, let's. A herd would be two or more. Three? There was three. And three four points on a general. Like, you're doing something here. I know there was certain general units in the state that people. Love did great. There were some big bucks taken in certain parts of the state. It feels like a four point here is pretty rare. Yeah. You know what I mean? So, anyway. Made it happen. Ashley got on the shooting stick. She's a killer. And she still looked at me. Finally, she's looked at me. And she goes, is he big enough? I'm like, what are you doing? Look through the scope. It's 100 yards. You know. Yes, it is. Yes.

And, anyway, she smashed it. It was no joke. It was awesome. And so, there's two other bucks that take off. And so, we said something to Sean. Anyway, broke it down. Took it to town. Did everything. And then, pretty soon, Sean got off work. Happened to get off work a couple hours early. He takes Ashley out there. They get on the track. The tracks that busted after her shot? At the gut pile. Yeah. Yeah. Got on the track. Sean got on the tracks. Because you had Priscilla rain tracking. Whatever. It was. He got on the tracks. Ashley got on the glass. Was on 15 tripod. Jan and I had a reception to go to. We got done with it. Rolled up on them. I'm like, Ashley, get in the truck. We're going to go around the backside of the mountain. She's like, no, I'm not getting the truck. She's like, Dad, you go around the mountain. He's going to come on this side.

And nobody's going to be glassing on this side. I mean, she's a hunter, dude. And I'm like, all right. She's lining you out. Oh, lining me out. Sean's on the tracks. He's going along. She's glassing. He's ready to jump. Pretty soon, she's like, I got him. And I'm like, what? I got him. I've got him right here. Sean, get back over here. You know, get it with Dad. We're going to go in and make a stock. So anyway, Jan and I go up there. We glass them up. Sure enough, I can see the butt through the trees. They're all skittish. They ended up winding, Sean. Yeah. Sean was tracking. He got within 150 yards or so. And it was gale force wind, again, one of those wonderful things. And we got within 700 yards. And I said, all right, Sean. Because he was still riding me. I mean, he's still going off the one and done. Because he's double shot. Because he's double shot, he's going to grind me.

And so I said, let's pull out the bullet out. Let's run through the numbers. So I said, how heavy is the crosswind? And he goes, I don't know, 20. I said, at least. Let's go with 20. Type in 20. It was 64 inches of wind drift. Jeez. I said, now where were you doing? It's five feet. Yeah. And I said, go ahead. Hang that far off the deer and see what you think. Does that feel good? No. We should probably get closer.

So anyway, ended up at 240 yards. Deer ends up getting a great shot. I don't know how he made it. It was amazing. It was a miracle shot. And smashed two of the three in the group. So we tracked the two off of Ashley's. Killed one. Killed another one. Now we've got a single roamer out there that doesn't deserve to live. The breeder buck. It feels like you shoot. When you shoot a couple of the four points, it does something to you. You feel bad. Think about it. Your annihilation program right there. It's straight up teaching kids how to kill stuff. And it was great. I love the general for that. But I also, you know, you care. You want them to live and be old. And I guess like Sean says, Dad, you just really like to scout, don't you? You don't like to kill anymore. That's not true. I want to kill something good. These are nice four points. They're nice bucks. Ashley's had a little cheater.

Adam's like, oh, he's got a little cheater. Cheater. Cheater. Cheater. Cheater. Cheater. Cheater. Cheater. I about said that. That's good. Five before. Anyway, yeah. One day and all of a sudden, yeah. I'm still looking for this trophy of Dad of the Year. I want it presented on Facebook Live.

Instagram Live. Your wife. You deserve it. Your wife. You already talked about that. Desert sheep for her. Stuff for everybody. But Jason. Well, I guess you got that. Yeah. My daughter called me, I kid you not, an hour before this podcast and was talking about how great a dad Jason is. Oh, yeah. Because his kids are killing. They're awesome. Actually, the kids. The kids make it happen. When Ash leaves the house with 15s, a scope, tripod, complaining about, you know, which foot she's going to use, you know, like the Arca Swiss and that they match and her taking a pistol and, I mean, her own four-wheel drive truck and going out there and shed hunting or glassing, sending me scope cam footage. Yeah. I'm just blown away. Thankful. I'm not even, it's not even a proud dad moment. It's just like, geez, she's going to outdo me. Yeah. She's no joke.

And when the boys miss a coyote or something like that, I mean, it ruins her whole day.

It's so crazy. So anyway, if she marries a non-hunter, I'm going to have problems. And he is, too. He's going to have problems. He is, too. And she is, too. It's put 18 years, 20 years into something that, all for nothing. I mean, that doesn't work, right? All right. All right. So enough with all that.

Devin, let's talk about some of your, like, you've been all over hecking back. Up north. Up north. Up down some miles. Up north. Out on the desert. Up in the hills. To and fro. A lot of pretty drives. Family. A lot of country. Yeah. You're juggling the family thing. Yeah. Just see how the next one goes. Yeah. Same thing, dedicated hunter. You're like, the next time, the next one. The next one. This is it. Yeah. You know, so. Yeah. This weekend. That's right again. That's some things coming up. Yeah. It'll be good. Chase and box. That's about it for me. Nothing too exciting since New Mexico. Yeah. The New Mexico was awesome. I think we ought to do more of that. We need, I need more elk hunts in my life. I just don't know exactly how to go about doing that. Adam? Yep. I agree.

You had a tag. That's right. Had a tag. Yep. Had other stuff going on too. Yeah. Tough year. Riding on the wall. Sometimes you cut your losses. Yeah. Simple as that. Throwing good money after that. Had a good friend of mine. Had a sheep tag. Had some sheep hunters.

Kids dedicated hunter tags too. Same type stuff. Yeah. Been good. Been quite good.

Yeah. More to come on all that. Look, we got a lot of hunting left to do. That's what we're right in the middle of. Actually, we weren't even going to do this podcast today. Just a lot. We're just here. We're all leaving again between family and friends and other stuff. Guiding a little bit. Hunting with family. Yep. General deer opens the second general deer for the units that have two different rifle hunts. It opens up this weekend here in Utah, which, anyway, looks like a little bit better weather than last weekend. Got to be. Yeah. All right. Wyatt, you got anything to add? Whatever Wyatt's doing, it's right. He analyzes things to death, and he knows when to hold them, and he knows when to fold them. He follows them. When to tell us, and when to not tell us. He knows it. And what did he tell me? He told me where to be, and did I do what you said? No. I didn't either. It's just basic strategy, just like 21, you know, playing cards. It's just basic strategy. Okay. I never was good at it. I never was good at playing cards. Yeah. If he tells you, if he tells you, you must listen. Wyatt listens to Kenny Rogers, and we listen to Wyatt.

You're not talking like sheep or moose, necessarily. No, yeah. Deer, elk, and animal, most definitely. Something I would never miss. Would you miss it? Never. No. No. So anyway, got some over-the-counter archery deer, November 3rd, coming up for Arizona. If you're just wanting a tag, great. Bronson, you in? I do. I waste so much money. I'm always usually hunting sheep right then, and you guys are trying to get a hold of me, and I'm like the only one out, and I've never been more thankful. Oh, I know. You're like, geez, I feel like I got left out. It's like, not one of us went one day. We didn't. Was that last year or two years ago? I feel like there's two states that gets this on. Oh, Idaho General. Every time.

Now you're going to have to make a conscious decision, am I going to apply in the draw? They don't charge you application fees. I know. So you're probably going to do it. Probably do it. It's free until it's not. December 5th to the 15th. It's free until it's not. If you got the right one, it'd be pretty fun, I guess. I don't know. But right. This year, well, I mean, you're like basically, yeah, late season, big deer show up in some of these units, and so you could hunt right up to the end of October, and maybe you get the weather. This year, it looks like they're getting weather. They're getting snow up there in parts of it. So. Yeah, I saw snow in Idaho. Yeah. Yeah. That's a lot going on. Well, sounds like we're laying the groundwork for a plan. No. What's the deadline for that? There was a year. When does that get it? I supplemented the entire state's budget. Fishing game agency.

Me, my kids, others, all had general tags. Just in case, right? So you can make sure that you have something to do. And didn't use it. But anyway, yeah, December 5th to the 15th. Is that it? Yep. So anyway, you'll be able to apply. See, I have to look that up. Jason, you dropped the thumb up his head. What do you think he's doing December 5th? I may or may not have written that section.

You're on it. Am I right? Yeah. All right. The reason I'm not on is I'm not on it. I'm over it. All right. So do we have anything else? Oh, Devin. We were supposed to shoot rifles this morning. I know all about that. Back me up on that. Wyatt was a creatine taker. That's what caused the kidney stones that. Yeah. That tinked in the porcelain. Yeah.
