EP 373: Breaking Down the Arizona and Wyoming Applications and More Hunting Stories

Hey everybody, Jason Carter, Adam Bronson, John Peterson, Logan, everybody, how are you guys doing? Good, good, good. I like it. Alright, here we get started. Bronson, we just got done, and John, of course you are a major part of it. John, why is it that you like to work from dark to daylight? There's less interruption.

You're here by yourself. I don't know, I seem to be the guy who fixes everything when someone can't print. During the daylight hours. Yeah, during the daylight hours, so yeah, less interruption. Kind of funny. Adam and I are like, I mean, we, trust me, we've been here plenty of dark to dark, but the dark to daylight is interesting with you. So anyway. January mags at the printer. John's the art director, so he deals with all the digital side of it. So sometimes I joke that I'm like the little elf that makes the shoes at night. Oh. I get all the content by the end of the day, and by the next morning, it's done. Yeah, it's just done. And Adam, it's a magic magazine. Ho, ho, ho. What do they, you guys hear that little joke about the magic, like carpet, the magic laundry basket, and all the, you know. Oh. I have magic laundry basket. What did you say? The magic coffee table.

Well, you put dirty clothes in them, and then all of a sudden they end up in your closet clean. How does this happen? It's the magic laundry basket. Yeah, it's the laundry fairy. And there's a food fairy, and there's a dish fairy, and there's all of these things. And John, you're the one that brought this up. How come there's not? And so my wife needs to talk to you. I'd rather be an elf than a fairy, though. How come there's not a broken truck fairy? Yeah, good point. We need to, hey, there is. Your wife has one of those. We drop off the truck. The truck magically gets fixed. Give a credit card out, and it gets fixed. Yeah, exactly. They always want to see this little square card. But anyway, hey, nevertheless, it's fixed, and it's the best truck I've ever owned. John, best truck you've ever owned, right? Best truck I've ever owned.

Logie Bear, for some reason, he wants to dive into all the truck repairs. Yeah, one day maybe. But anyway, good times. So yeah, we did. We covered, we put out a January magazine. January 2026. Can you guys believe it was 2026 already? No. You remember when we were little kids? Okay, this goes way back. Logan, this is back when you weren't even probably an egg yet. No way. Yeah. Weren't even a thought. Okay, so, but way back in the day, we were going to have like private little aircraft. You know, you would go to the store, land, like hovercraft and all that. They were predicting that back when we were little kids. Do you guys remember? Flying cars. Yeah, like flying cars. Yeah. And so anyway, that never happened. You know, where's that? But Trump's working on some hover stuff, or Elon, who knows, maybe with the help of Trump and Elon, the dream team. We'll come up with something.

I don't know. But here we are, 2026. Everything's just still the same. Got to get your money and your food by the sweat of your brow still. I don't know. Still have to work. I mean, I guess in some places they're delivering groceries by air. Yeah. So you're talking, or even like. We're progressing. To your doorstep, you mean? Yeah. Walmart delivery? They've got drone deliveries in certain areas. Now, there's got to be a way. They have like drone. They were working on with UPS to drop packages with drones and stuff like that. Is that a thing? Yeah. Yeah. I think it's a thing. It's probably in the big cities. I mean, here it's not going to. Where traffic's a problem. You'll have to look at Chad or Grok or whatever. I don't know about my air. You deliver over Burrell, you're getting shot down. Yeah. Trust me. They don't get packages by air there.

You start hovering around Lund or Newcastle or somewhere out there. Yeah. There's some preppers that's going to dump you. Yeah. They're going to practice on some things. The porch buyers don't wait for it to get to the porch. Yeah. Exactly. So anyway, we covered elk and antelope in Arizona, Wyoming, sheep, moose, goat, bison, elk as well. Bronson, that was unique. We had to cover the Wyoming stuff because they. Thick. Yeah. It's a thick magazine. A lot of stuff. It is. And we had to do every unit with some of those, even though they may not pertain to non-residents because they might make a change in April. They've done that the last couple of years in mid-January or February. Swished out some non-resident units for sheep and moose and goat. Yeah. So we decided to cover them all and double check as things go on. You've got to tell April 30th to apply.

Who would apply in January anyway because they're going to hold your money for those three species? You know what I mean? I don't know. They like to hold it. They want you to apply or not. And then amend later. You know? Well, you can, but you're going to be out, you know, six, eight, ten grand. Throw bison on there. Call it 12. Call it even 12. Yeah. So anyway, we did cover them all, but then we also put a little caveat in there as, you know, check the hunt planner to just to verify that that is going to be available. I don't know. You'd think Wyoming can make plans in advance just not wanting to deal with all the questions, but that's not the case so far. Well, they've always loved to be the first non-resident elk application, even though they don't draw until May. And now they're behind the Idaho general. Yeah. Exactly. They're going to move it up to November 30th next year? Maybe.

Let's have it. Maybe. So it's kind of slightly frustrating because they will often add hunts for elk, type nines or split it, type ones and twos, or they'll change seasons outright and you won't know about it. And all of a sudden, if you don't watch their hunt planner and regs get passed in April, you're applying for a hunt that, you know, you can't hunt the archer hunt now. You know? Good point. Why can't everybody be like Arizona? They never have a fee change. They never have. I don't know. How does that? Jason. That was my... You know. You know. Everybody hates Arizona's draw system. But you said that. The whole world's like, what? I know. But I'm just saying, I mean, to change is just not even a big card. They don't go up three cents on anything. No. For the last 10 years, probably, right? No. Yeah. So long. In fact, we should look that up. No. No.

They might hear us talking and say, they're right. Let's trigger an increase. Carter, let's just... I don't want to... Logan, cut this. We're cutting the whole minute. It's fine. Leave it. All right. All right. So anyway, the 2026 auction and special tags, we put those in there. Youth hunting opportunity. We had Cash author that one and crank through it. And Cash works with Wyatt. And our licensed application division deals with a lot of applications each and every day. As does Wyatt and Adam and I as well. Anyway, just a great magazine. It's nice. I don't know. This one kind of came together. I don't want to say it was easy, John.

It just came together. It's like a magic. Like a magazine fairy. Adam and I know how. So we know the part we played. The part you played might as well have been an elf or some fairy or something. But anyway, very aggressive. It was an angry couple of weeks. What would you... I guess, and let's spend a few minutes, Jason. What do you think? Some of the highlights... You said there's no change in Arizona, but there's got to be a little bit of change. You've got to be something to talk about. What are some highlights of Arizona? They always swap out the earlys. It's like the early 1, 9, 27 always swap out, you know. And so between the early rifle and the early muzzle. But it just doesn't pertain to us. Well, and it's like the difference between an early rifle and a muzzleloader with the scopes is really nothing. It's the odds are still, you know, incredibly bad. Yep.

There's a new early rifle hunt, kind of somewhat new in 5B and muzzleloader hunt and Unit 5A and a few things. 7 East had like an early rifle hunt they did away with. 8, they did away with that one. But just, you know, there's some cool... They took a Unit 8 for Antelope. Used to have just two muzzleloader seasons. They took one and made it a rifle. Like, there's... There's some weird little things like that. Yeah, just some things that you want to stay up on and... Everything... Just stay up on it. It would be monumental. Most season date-wise just slid forward one day, right? Yeah, one day. Nothing... Yeah. I think we're due in a year or two. Nothing crazy. Just slide back four or five days. Those are the years. It's kind of like Utah in 2027. Yeah, and I think, you know, Arizona archery feels like their dates are... Well, it's September 11th to the 24th now. So, I mean, it's... Yeah.

A little earlier than you maybe want. You know what's interesting about Arizona, I guess, on moisture and antler growth and things like that is you want to have good, heavy moisture. And we're... In these drought times and decades, it feels like I don't know how many years. But anyway, in this drought era, you know, we're always counting on the moisture. Like, the moisture we get, we want it to be just right timing. If it's just right timing, you can pull out of it and have some big animals. But anyway, they didn't have such a bad year. It was not great. We all know this. Like, it was very tough and it looked really grim until you... And then you do get the photos submitted and... And I get it. You can't tell a ton about photography anymore. Like, there's... Things look good, you know. But, Bronson, our cover's a 420-something inch bull. 422 and change or whatever it is.

There were some big bulls killed there, yeah. But we've got to remember, the highlight reel is going to look as good as it almost always does for 15 or 20 bulls. But collectively around the state, I mean, the rut was rough. It was. And the number of 350-plus bulls that Arizona is known to produce on a lot of different units was way, way off. But without... It makes you realize a bull like that on the cover, like, that thing is... It doesn't even... Does that look... Does that look like a bull that would just come out of a Flatlander unit that was... It's susceptible to drought? No. Exceptional. No. It's susceptible. No. You know. So, anyway, and that was kind of a drifter-type bull. I mean, he, you know... It moved a long ways. A lot of people hunted between archery and then nerdy rifle until he got killed. Pretty fun. I mean, that's a... It's an absolute big, big governor bull.

Not just a governor bull, you know. Governor-tag-type bull. I mean, it's just excellent, giant. And there was others. There was, I mean, some big bulls killed in weird... Yeah. I'm not saying weird. Maybe just... Different seasons you wouldn't expect. Unit 8 late rifle. Yeah. I mean, when would you ever say, yes, I want to kill a 375-inch bull. I'm going to apply for that. Or 80s. Yeah. And sure enough, you know, those things happen. I think that's the one thing about Arizona. We talk a lot of negativity about those late seasons because we try to paint an accurate picture and manage expectations. But that's also where 80% of the opportunity is. You know what I mean? Yeah. If you're a rifle hunter, it's where 95% of your chance is. It is. When are you going to get an early bull hunt? If you're not a bull hunter, yeah, you can put in for the early rifle and muzzleloaders

to have a pipe dream. But realistically, it's never going to happen. To go hunting, you're going to have to look at late rifles if you're a rifle hunter. And that's just the way it is. Pick your year and do it. And go deal with hundreds, literally hundreds, or three or four or 500 in some cases of tags in a certain unit. But that's just the way it is. And that's why they can maintain some quality is they give an archery hunt and then very few early rifle, if they do, in any unit. Not all units have it. And then you have, you know, opportunity for what, seven or nine days in November, whatever it is. Yeah. That's right. And those late hunts, unless you're picking a unit that's like, let's say a unit nine, which by the way, we have a story in our magazine. A guy smashed an absolute giant on that hunt. And you would think, yeah, unit nine is one of those you can't glass.

It's tough to kill anything good. You know what I mean? With a not bugling. Yeah. And it does border the park, borders reservation. Like, there's a lot of really good quality things about, say, a unit nine. And while, why they do have exceptional bulls in quality, you know, there's just a lot of escapement and it's tough to kill them late. But, but if you were to pick, you know, units that you can glass, say, you know, a 23 or eight or, you know, unit one or some of these, you know, there's, there's, it's, it's worth doing, you know, but we're super picky where, I mean, and not just we're, I just think hunters in general, hunters in general, just because you're dealing with a lot of points and. You got to be realistic though, man. I mean, even these hunts we're talking about, you just rattled off, not unit nine, but 23, one, some of those, they're like 19 to 23 points to draw those. Yeah.

That's not like, not like they're, you know, eight or 10 point units that that's serious points to draw it. And you think you're going to wait for the early rifles that are like 27 to 30 and never going to catch. Yeah. I mean, these, some of these late hunts take a lot of points to draw. Well, especially like if you're talking, let's just say, you know, like unit one late was, you know, 19 points. Like we're talking in the, now not random. There's a random component to it. 11 tags go randomly. 11 go to the guys that apply with the most points. And so it took at least 19, but people are waking up to that and saying, I'm going to use them. Exactly. I want to go. Yep. And so they're dealing with like even, you know, there's a whole cluster of units. We can list them all. The very same thing happened to the early high bab tags. Remember, they used to take 13 to 14 points.

Which is probably what they're worth. And now they're 21 or two points. Because people realized, I'm not going to hunt the late. I'm never going to draw. I've got 20 something points. Now I got to hunt. And I'm 73 and a half years old. I was talking with one of our outfitters we work a lot with. Super good guy. Very knowledgeable. Anyway, he talked about those extra tags given in unit 23. The last two years, including this year. So 25 and 26. You know, we're talking an increase of 60 tags on the late season. And the hunters are good at what they do. We have teams. Everybody's going with a group of friends or going guided or whatever. And the glass, the long range rifles, all the things. It's going to affect the quality. You know, it can't not. If you're, if you, the quality we're used to. I mean, you know, you're still going to be great bulls by a lot of standards.

But like the standard Zipperese kind of holds 23 to. It's going to have an impact. Yeah, it will. And so, and then you even got good archery hunters. So when they hunt late archery, they're actually, you know, it's possible they're going to kill. I mean, it's not like a tag that you're going to have like no kill on. Not like it used to be. These bows that stay in age and they get to hunt before the early or the late rifle. I mean, they kill some elk. We're even seeing that in Utah. Like our late archery. It's one of those, like, you don't get very many tags. And you are after everybody else. These bulls are not used to being hunted. And then you get a year like this where there's no weather, hardly any snow. And you could, I mean, there was a little bit. But, you know, I mean, it wasn't, some years it's really brutally cold. And you've got a bunch of crunchy snow everywhere.

This year wasn't like that. And you could walk up on stuff. You know, these bulls are used to, their noses are on the ground eating. You know what I mean? They're just in feed mode. Which, I guess, brings us to another point. That eight inches of rain in Arizona is sure helping right now. Because they're in feed mode. And they're feeding. They've got stuff to feed on. Well, and that's right. You're talking back to your moisture. You know, if we can just have a normal to good rest of winter. It's been really warm. Extremely mild. Snowpack's low. But that's not really indicative of what our moisture situation in the southwest has been like. Because we're not packing snow, but we got moisture. You know? Yeah. So if we can just get the rest of it, you know, the timing. If we just have some spring. I mean, this fall, you can't really say it could be any better.

Hopefully it just continues this winter. Yeah, I don't know. My chickens are running out of water all the time. It's so warm right now. And you don't even have to break their ice in the morning. I haven't broke ice yet. So anyway, you know, talking about some of these tag increases. Also, 23 north. So on that early hunts, on the early hunts like the early rifles, 23 north and 23 south are segregated. Whereas on the late, you can hunt either or. You know, wherever you want in the entire 23 unit. But they did give five the last two years. So 25 and then upcoming 26, they're going to give an extra five tags. Went from 20 to 25. That's extra. That's serious pressure. Each guy has got serious pressure. And he's going to want to take home, or will, a 350 plus ball. You just wonder about the quality. That's been kind of the, I don't know.

I don't want to call it the best unit in the state because 10 sure produced pretty well. And 9 sure does pretty incredible, especially archery-wise. One's coming on. You know, one was one of those steady Eddie two decades, and it's always producing, you know, 330 to 360s. And it feels like it's taking a, it's surging a little bit, you know, for quality. And then, but part of it is like, well, there's a little more water there on drought years. One's, I don't know, a little bit drought resistant. A little more. Just a little bit. Yeah. But not great. Still, you know, has challenges there. But, yeah, we talk about all that in the publication. You know, we're, it's what we're trying to do, like everybody else, is manage points, expectations, and then also when to hunt. Like, when to go and make that happen. When to utilize these points and whatnot. And how to do that.

So, anyway, I don't know. Antelope, they just, Arizona Antelope, they come when they come, man. I mean, what are you going to do? Apply and forget about it. Yeah. They're about like sheep tags. Literally. Yeah, literally. So, maybe you randomly get lucky. I mean, if you look at the random odds, it's not. Sheep. Yeah. You know, anyway, it's just one of those things you take them when you can't. But, man, we have so many stories. I just can't believe all of the stories we have published. Just a lot of great trophy animals that hit the ground. Even though, you know, we were in tough years at times and, you know, you wish it was better. Still, the end result was good and a lot of good stories.

What do you want to go next, Bronson? Well, I guess just a quick review maybe on Wyoming before we get in. Maybe talk some hunting stories. We talked about it a little bit ago. So, Wyoming doesn't come out with a set of regulations like every other state does to apply with. They have little hunt application brochure. It's just electronic on their website. It shows their draw deadlines, fees, all that type of stuff. And then they load their hunt planner in, you know, roughly this time of year. And then they can modify it up through January, which is kind of like we alluded. It's happened in the past where their preliminary release we've gone to print with. And then they've changed, deleted units and added units in the past. So, we tried to hold off last year and cover some of it in February, some of it in January just so we could nail it. And it still changed.

So, we just decided let's put it all back in January. That's what was frustrating is when it changed. Yeah. And we were like, really? You guys updated the hunt planner. Yeah. You said you were going to cover it. These are the units we could put in for it. We covered it. Then you changed and took some out. Well, anyway, long story short, you have a lot of time. They push their sheep, moose, goat deadline back until April 30th. And it's also for a lot of other reasons. You know, with the 90-10 split with non-resident tags, if you don't have 24, 5-plus moose points and 25, 6-plus sheep points, you're not going to be in the max point running more than likely this year. So, if you're not, it's really important to see what units, if any, are going to have random tags in for moose and sheep. Last year, we had a few moose tags. We had one sheep tag. The year before, there was no sheep tags.

So, it also, you know, you've got to wait and see that drawing in February on their super tags. You can generally count on, like, a moose, 25 or 26. Last year, it was one in each on random. Yeah, and 38 even thrown in. Yeah. But then you've got to let the super tags get drawn in February because if those are non-residents that draw the sheep tag or the trifecta, which they're always going to pick a sheep in that trifecta, if one or both of those are non-residents, they pull those out of a non-resident quota and therefore may not be a random sheep tag. In the regular draw. So, you just read all the information and sit on the moose, sheep, and goat stuff for a while. Yeah. Just have it there. Know it's there. Don't get too preoccupied about picking your unit yet. If you're a max point holder and you're playing it, yeah, talk to us.

Talk to some outfitters about your sheep or moose unit you're with and striking distance on. We can let you talk with them on. It still will be important, in my opinion, in April to watch the tag permit numbers get passed. Anything that's going to slightly go up or down, even one non-resident tag more on a sheep unit, you know, going from one to two or two to three or something, could really sway your odds if you're a max point guy, 26 or seven point sheep guy. Yeah. Regarding elk, you know, there's not a lot. There are some stuff that changes. They can split units into a type 1 and a type 9. Like I alluded, that has happened the last few years. Oh, it happened to you in 23? Yeah. So you could apply for a unit like that or other units and then find out you can't archery hunt it with a type 1 tag after you've drawn the tag.

So the good thing about the elk, I mean, you do have to apply for it by February 2nd, but you do have until May 8th to amend your application. Which is so funny. Or pull it all out. You apply? Like, why don't we just apply? Let's call it the end of January, but first part of February, and then you sit for months. I know. Through until May. You can make changes. You really should just move that. Just let us apply just like the deer, elk, and antelope. I don't know why they are. Wyoming has always wanted to be the first non-resident elk state to open it. It's always the way they want to do it. Probably making a few bucks. Maybe. But, I mean, you're still going to get points from people in the summer. You know, they have to do that. So, anyway, this is what you do. You apply now. You sit around and wait for three and a half months or whatever until they approve the permit numbers.

You have up until May 8th to amend your unit or pull your application completely. The results will be out like the 21st. And if we were to wait until those finer print numbers come out, like, you cannot put it in print. You don't even have time to put out a magazine. No. Exactly. So, that's another reason we just, let's just do it. Here's the top, you know, roughly 50-ish units in the state, you know, plus the generals. You know, we cover a lot of units. A lot of great options in Wyoming. Wyoming elk are doing really, really good. You've got a lot of options in high desert, high prairie type units. General options. Easy country without wilderness or grizzlies or all that. Now, generally, those units are really hard to draw. Everybody wants to hunt elk and sagebrush, you know, and easy terrain. When I say everybody, you know what I mean.

Everybody can hunt that versus backcountry or wilderness where it necessitates you to hire a guide or things like that. But, man, there's such a wide variety of elk hunting in that state from sagebrush to the roughest backcountry, you know. It's something for everyone. Even though we can't hunt the wilderness without a guide, it's just not. I mean, it's okay. Like, there's plenty of options. Lots of options. Even general options. Even the southern general that's small and basic geographic area and whatnot. It's just there's still plenty of, like, even public land type options for guys that want to use points. And it is over-the-counter for residents. I think we're pretty critical of things that are over-the-counter for residents and us valuing them like a trophy opportunity.

But they're so – I don't know if you want just the population base or what it is in Wyoming, but it's a little bit different. I look at it a little bit differently than, say, in Idaho, you know, an opportunity. Yep, and that's true even if you just do it self-guided on your own on public land. But then there's also some wilderness backcountry general stuff that is really, really good. You can still 330 to 350 bulls if you use an outfitter on that, which – where can you do that for three to four points, you know, in the West? Almost nowhere. So something good to keep in mind. Go have a fun experience with a bear, right? I mean – You may or may not. Yeah. Have an exciting story to come. Logan's wanting to buy my 10 mil off me. I was, yeah. You're going to make me buy my own.

Logan, you know what they say about concealed weapon permit holders and things like that is you have to be willing to use it. I'm ready. Like, you need to have, like, ice veins, man. Have you seen that video of how fast a bear can accelerate at you? Dude, Sean sent me one this morning of a bear attack. I don't like these bear attack videos. No. We should post all bear attack videos. We should have people DM. We have, like, a yearly bear face. I hate them so much that I can't look away. You know what I mean? It's awesome. Yeah. Anyway, yeah. Guy dumps a bear. Sean sends a little whatever or reel or whatever they are. All right. Moving on. You can have a wonderful bear experience in Wyoming. Yep. Lots going on up there. And then there's some – a lot of country that has no bears at all. So there's something for everybody. Public land. Easier hunting.

Tough – you know, maybe a tougher horseback type experience. But still, something for everybody, and we're happy to help guys make choices on that. And we broke that down. The only real key thing for you to remember about February 2nd is if you want a chance to draw an elk tag, you have to apply for something by then. The only thing you can't change after that is whether you're in the special or the regular. That's all. That's the one thing I think is if you have stupor of thought and you need to go make an application, just make it. Just make an application. Yeah. Because it's free to change. Yeah. They do sit on your money for a long time. That's the only downside about applying versus doing points only in the summer. But, hey, nobody has a full schedule almost January 1st. So – or February 2nd. I'm pretty busy. Adam, are you busy? Sit it on. No. Bring it on. Come on.

I put it in every year for elk. For that reason. Just – sometimes I swing for the fence and switch to the unit. I apply, but you can also – Withdraw from completely. Yeah, exactly. You can. Because by May 8th, a lot can happen. Yeah. That's right. Make an application so you have options. No, like Adam's saying, you only have options within the regular license fee or the special license fee if you did regular or special. But you always have options for the next few months you can think on it. All right. Where are we going next? Guide this thing. You guys haven't talked about your Colorado stuff. I think most of the rest of us did. Oh, yeah. John, you did the Colorado. Jason, you didn't. Jason, you went to – I don't know. What's Oklahoma? I want to say the Cowboy State, but I don't know if that's right. That was a good hunt. Yeah. That was a good hunt. Talk about that. Post your Colorado.

Oklahoma's fine. Colorado's good. Colorado's fine. Colorado was kind of about what you would expect. So it's one of those states, like, what do they call it? FOMO. Like, if I don't hunt Colorado, I have FOMO bad. Like, I have a fear of missing out, you know. But then you go there and you're like, yeah, this is what I thought it was going to be. I knew, I knew, I knew better, and I did it anyway. And anyway, it's fine. It is – I guess maybe our expectations are a lot. When you look at how many points it takes to draw some of the units we hunted, John, you hunted a unit. It takes a very modest number of points to draw, you know. Yeah. And mine as well. Mine was even less. When you look at those and you think, what did I expect? Like, what do I expect out of this stuff? Well, I expect a Henry Mountains experience. It's Colorado. You know, same thing with you, Adam.

Look at – I mean, Becky went and had a – Yeah. You know, didn't kill a buck. Burned a lot of points. Burned a ton. Didn't happen. I think it's a prime example of – that's a prime example right there. Gives you a chance to go on. Who did you call to complain about? Not one person. Exactly. People are – but they want to hang somebody. When they're – when they have a bad experience, they want to take some – hide off of somebody. Well, every once in a while, we get somebody that calls and, you know, maybe we gave a suggestion based on a point tier for that. And we all – we usually always try to caution. You know, we've been saying it for years. You got 15, 20-plus points in Colorado. You're probably going to be asking to be disappointed. I don't know how many times you've said that. There's not usually – But I think part of it – yes, you're right.

But I think part of it is because we expect so much. Why do we expect more? Points don't equal – you know, money in the bank or something like that, you get it back. Yeah. It investment. It grows. Okay, wait. Walk me through. Breadcrumb it for me. What are you talking about? I'm just saying, you put certain stuff in savings and it grows and you pull it out. It's worth what you've had when you put into it. Points you think are going to grow to 20. And, yeah, I get – now I'm getting a value back out of it and this is what I want to catch it in for. I'm feeling like we're having an 07, 08 crash every single hunt season. Is that what you're talking about? Well, I'm just saying. Yeah. Colorado? Yeah. It's negative 1% every year right now. Okay. Yeah. There you go. There you go. So, yeah. And so I think, yeah, we went over there. We saw, I don't know, a lot of four-point buck.

Like even helped a guy, you know, told a guy to go smash this 100 and, I don't know, ends up being 170s. You know, really nice, great, nice buck. Let another one go that was probably over 180s. It was heavy. I don't think got killed. You know, and every time you – anyway, when you help or when you give one up, you're like, man, I feel bad for that little buck. I want him to live and be awesome and amazing. But you also love to help guys and see people be successful. And we did meet a guy out there and it was awesome. It was great. He's like, you know, Jason, I've been following what you're doing, da, da, da. And I'm here because of you guys. And I want to hunt a place that I can hunt pretty regular that has the genetics and whatnot.

Anyway, as we're leaving, Jan and I are leaving, we passed his side-by-side and he's up on the side of the hill with, I don't know, I want to say his 180s or something. I mean, I've got the email now. Anyway, I left an epic hat and a few things and we did the fist pumping in the air and he grabbed the buck and showed us the buck. And it was 400 yards away and it made a 400 or 500-yard shot. You took off your sweaty hat and left it as trash. It was Janice. And it's not sweaty. It's like Branagh. I'm just like, man, that guy. I did wonder, though. I'm like, if I get pulled over between here and Eagle. You don't have an orange. Yeah, she doesn't have an orange hat. You know, good luck to her. If you're on your way home, you could have left them your used boots, Jason. Exactly. Okay. Okay. Okay. Bump the brakes. That's an inside joke.

Anyway, kind of fun. He obviously, it turned out just awesome. He says, I'm here. I've killed 190 and a bunch of, you know, 160s, 90 more in the middle. And just, it was a great experience that way. And we were in the field. We saw a lot of sheep. We saw elk, bulls. I mean, it was no recount. Bull hunt. We could have killed bulls. So, it was just a lot. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. It was fun. It was fun that way. You've been known at times to run to town and buy a tax. Do we really got to talk about that? Well, I just didn't know. Nothing. Well, enough time has passed that we can talk about it. Let's talk about it. I was in unit 55. Many years ago. Okay. Many years ago with a good friend. Maybe even a guy that works here at the office. And, dude, I saw an absolute giant bull. Okay. No joke. Okay. I put my hands on a few. No joke. Giant. Giant back end whale tail. I've seen the video. Huge bull.

And I was like, I'm going to. I did video that. Yeah. You showed me. I mean, I'm not making this up. I've got to go find that. I'm not making this up, Jason. I don't know. So, anyway. So, anyway, then I go to town. And 14 janky transactions later. I still don't have an elk tag. But I've got to go visit with Game and Fish on a Monday. Yeah, because the transaction went through. And your account showed it. But they couldn't print it. We couldn't print. And then you're like, oh, go ahead. But it's stuck. And so, you know, you're over the counter elk unit. At the time, you're over the counter. And you're like, that bull is being chased right now. You know? Like, I mean, and I'm sitting here tagless. And I paid for the opportunity anyway. It was just one of those things. So, I go back. Of course, he's gone. Of course, he's gone. We'll go look in the record book. Wow.

There's a giant bull listed in the record book during that time frame. You're kidding. No, I'm not. In fact, I'll go log in. From Gunnison? Yeah. Gunnison. Yeah. Yeah. And I'm not saying it's the. But just tell me how many bulls like that come off of an over-the-counter unit. Zero. No. Yeah, exactly. So, anyway. That's what happens to me, though. That's what happens to me. I mean, there's a story that's ongoing right here locally. Same thing. Yeah. I'm on them. I just can't kill them, Bronson. I just. Well, that one's like an afterthought. You're there hunting deer. Yeah. Over in Colorado. Yeah. You're there hunting deer and like, whoa, this is too big not to run to town, spend six, seven hundred bucks, whatever it is. Yeah. Like, damage to Logan's future truck trying to get to town. Jeez. Take it easy on that thing for a little while. Anyway. Fun times. But, and Colorado's got them.

Actually, over-the-counter Colorado, I don't want to. Now, I don't want everybody to, Jason, tell me this time. This is amazing. It might make all your dreams come true, but really, not a bad, not a bad gig to go get that over-the-counter tag. And guys are killing 320, 330s a few if you get really lucky. And then this year, there was a lot of cases people didn't see elk. There was a lot of, John. It was warm. I want to dive into your hunt, too, but there was a lot of camps. I mean, let's just say this. It's the 99% of the camps we drove, I didn't have deer elk hanging in. It was warm and not great hunting conditions. Right. But when you have so many hunters out there, some guys are going to kill stuff. I just think what keeps us going back, A, there's something for everyone, similar to Wyoming Elk. There's something for everyone at all point levels. You want to hunt deer, you can do it.

You don't have any points, it's okay. Yeah. There's options for you. Not land or tag options. There's draw options. And so you look at that and you just think, and then when you do have a really good year, you never forget it. And so you keep going back trying to recreate that great year and you never give it up. Right. How many years have you hunted Colorado, John? Every year. Like since when? Oh, since. What about since or something? Yeah. Probably. Yeah, I'd say 20 years. But for me, I think it's a total mindset of if you're disappointed, it just depends on what your expectations are going into it. And for me, if I'm somewhere where, like you said, like there's decent genetics, there's just a chance. There's a chance you could win the lottery. Something could happen. Oh, no. And that's uncalled. That's special genetics. And you were passing a four point.

You were passing a nice four point buck. And here, what would you do? Would you? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Your experience was still better there than here, Jim. Yes. And I would compare it to, I've hunted this unit in the past, been several, several years, but I saw a lot more four point bucks. This year? This year. Than I did there, you know, in the past. No kidding. Numbers were better. Yeah. Yeah. In fact, I would say every day, you know, at least a solid four point, 160, 170 class, mid-170s. But, yeah, there was one, I mean, I videoed it forever and they were rutting and fighting and all that. It was just awesome. How'd you lay off the trigger when you start doing that? Yeah, well, John does not like to lay off the trigger. I don't like to lay off the trigger, but what, if it's early in the hunt, I have an easier time. And then, you know, near the end, I really like jerky.

Well, and the other thing is like within. And killing stuff. And killing stuff. Within a week or eight days ago, you just smoked one in Nevada. Yes. So, you just barely scratched the niche. So, I had. Jerky buck. You had jerky. Yeah. I do want to say, late in the hunt, I was driving out of a canyon, the same canyon that this buck was in, that I videoed, and it was in the back of a guy's truck. That buck? Yeah. And it looked really good in the back of his truck. Yeah. Oh, crap. Yeah, yeah. How could this? Yeah. Anyway, so, no, good for him. No, it was just fun. And you're there. Something magical could happen. And even if it doesn't, it was a great hunt, and there was a lot of game. You hunted right to the end, then. Did you hunt the whole hunt? Well. Okay, sorry. I didn't. Sort of. Yeah. So, last two days, I, so I blew a water pump in my truck, and it was, it was a mess. Yeah. And, uh.

I was like, you know, this was, it was so dry. I was like, maybe you go rent the vehicle. Yeah, I was far away from rent. I did look it up. I was an hour away from somewhere. Like a lot of color. And I can drive my truck. You just go do that. But not this way. Yeah. The weird thing was, I got a warning that said, my engine was hot, but the gauge wasn't hot. Something wasn't, wasn't quite right. But, anyway, I, I turned around that morning, and anyway, and it was, the problem was, well, we were Saturday and Sunday, and tried to find a mechanic in a tiny, tiny town, and luckily. On a weekend. I, I, I found a guy, his shop looked like, I mean, it was a storage unit, and he had a little shop in there, and he just happened to be there on a Saturday. I totally lucked out, and he, he, he took me. How'd you get a car? Fixed me up. Well, so, so the Saturday, no. Yeah.

There was a Napa that, that wasn't too far away, and they actually would deliver, so we got the part ordered on Saturday, and then he installed it on Sunday. And then I drove home. Yeah. So, I missed the last two days of the, of the hunt. I had a. But it was still great. Amazing truck, truck experience in Oklahoma. But, anyway, keep going. So. I'm kind of sick of it. That kind of wrapped up, Joneson. Yeah. So bring way. That kind of wrapped it up. I mean, I didn't want to make. You were trying to beat the snowstorm. Yeah, and I was trying to beat the snowstorm. I do want to say, though, coming from Nevada, going to Colorado. Dude, the Colorado people are so nice. I'm just like. What do you mean? People stop me. Mostly elk hunters. They just want to chat. I chatted up a guy, and I'm just, I'm an introvert, so I'm not looking to talk to anybody. Really? You don't strike me as an introvert.

But, oh, yeah. I could be a hermit. Really? I could be alone. So if we took Logan and put him over on the consultant side. Oh, yeah. I'd be fine. No. Oh, absolutely. Really? I'm totally fine. You're going to make me move again. I was thinking about putting you in the fishbowl. That could be fun. It would be fun, and I think it would just be really good, I think, for a lot of reasons. Yeah. This is good for information and for social media and all of this. Yeah. Yeah. I have family members that, I mean, my dad can't, like, if he goes a day without talking to somebody or having some, like, interaction with people, he'll go crazy. Man. Man. I could live in a cabin like the Unabomber for a while, you know, and be fine. You know, I just have to have little projects and be able to build things. You know, it makes sense, John, because I've never known a man to hunt the way you did in

Nevada by yourself day after day. And I would call John. I tried to call John once or twice a week to check up on him, because if I was doing that, I would not be okay. And I'd call John once or twice a week to check up on him. No, I'm doing good. It's great. I love it out here. Yeah. I'm like, dude, I would have lost my sanity long ago. Awesome and fun. Yeah. Anyway, they just, yeah, nice, nice people. Nevada, like, you better be carrying because you might get shot for no reason. Whoa. I'm just saying they're not nice. Whoa. Like, I don't remember. Oh, John, didn't you get mad at somebody the other day? No, no. We can just go past that. You covered that. Yeah, he's just, it's kind of interesting. I'm just worried someday if it's going to be B he shoots or you or, I don't know. Don't startle him in the, remember those dark to daylight hours? Don't startle him here in the office.

Text him before you open the door. No, that's about, that's about all on my hunt. And then, well, I paid the guy a little bit extra to try to get it done before the snowstorm hit. And we ended up hit, the snowstorm hit right when we were doing, you know, some of the high mountain passes. And we were doing 10 miles an hour behind some Subarus. And it was so slow. And I feel bad I missed Jen's rendition on that whole trip. And she was probably, she doesn't hold back. Everything she thinks, she's talking, but it's in French. And I'm sure she was crushing some motor vehicles all around you. Yeah. Oh, yeah. She was like, you can tell that person, never driven in a snowstorm. Okay, bump the brakes, Jen. There's four feet of snow out there on the ground. Bump the brakes. Yeah. We were going past ski resorts. So it was, we were high. Yeah.

But anyway, yeah, we ended up, Ashley and I went and did Oklahoma with Roger, a really good friend of ours. It's just awesome. It was kind of his thing. And the second year we've done it. And it was, it was a great experience. It was, it was awesome.

Anyway. What were you hunting? Hunting whitetails. Okay. Hunting whitetails, yeah. And coyotes. I mean, I was like, man, I'm going to take a coyote gun. So it ended up taking a 6.5 just because I want to kill them all. And I guess it doesn't matter. I mean, last time we went, I mean, there was this coyote and there's so many coyotes. Like a, I think we've talked about this on the podcast. Yeah, we mentioned it, but go ahead. It's worth restating. Well, I mean, just coyote teams, when they have a competition, if you don't have 40 dogs, you don't go in. Well, anyway, I saw, we saw eight dogs running together one day, Ashley and I. Like, it was unbelievable. Yeah. But anyway, this one dog last year was like kind of her, like kind of taunting this doe. Came within like here to the wall. What's that like? Four yards, three yards, four yards or whatever. And just taunting this doe.

And this doe stopped, stopped from eating and just sat there and watched him. And they were always like, you know, you should shoot these coyotes. And I'm like, well, we've been taught you don't do that because you kind of ruin the area for the deer and all this. And, you know, you can't kill enough of them to make a difference. So it's, you know, but it is fun. Like, so anyway, finally I was like, I kind of got sick of him taunting this doe. Like, I want to smoke him. I just shot him just right in front of the doe. And it just wiped him out. And she sat there and looked at him. She didn't move. She didn't move. What? Didn't move. And then pretty soon she went back to eating. She's like, what? I mean, yes, right in front of her. So now you're like, I'm going to kill everyone I see now from now on. Yeah, I was just like, so this year I was kind of half excited about it.

And I don't know how many I smashed last year, but they kept hearing shots randomly go off, you know. And so anyway. Passes the time in a white tail blind or stand. Yeah. You can shoot coyotes. Yeah, yeah, it does pass the time. And if you throw, if you're suppressed and you got a little 6.5 and pretty soon. Anyway, this thing was kind of sighted in. You know, we got a little spot on the way over there. We can shoot mud and rocks or whatever. And just make sure you're on, like, before you hit Colorado State Line. Didn't have time to do a lot with it, but I have. But when you throw a suppressor on them, it changes things. Yeah. It changes impact and whatnot. Anyway, got it dialed. Plenty good enough, you know. And anyway, went over there. And Ashley and I were together. Roger kills early. Then he's like, well, I'm not going anywhere.

I'll sit with Ashley and we'll separate and get you guys in different stands, which a lot of the fun is just sitting with your daughter or kids or whatever. And you just have a great time. We had a great time. But anyway, so now I'm taking the, I've got the coyote gun. She's got the amazing, awesome rifle that's perfect, can shoot well past 1,000, all the things. And anyway, right at the last 10 minutes, we had only a three-day hunt. A buck comes in and I'm like, I'm just not going to, I just let it go, let it go for like 10 minutes. And finally I'm like, I mean, it's a big deal. Like, Ashley's a killer. You know, if we don't get a coyote, I mean, we hear about it. If we, if I would have passed that buck anyway. So I'm like, all right, I'm shooting this buck and just one and done. Great hunt. It came over. We took all the photos and all that.

But I wish she would have been in my stand because she just didn't have, she just didn't have a great opportunity. Yeah. You know. And just the way luck has it, it's a short hunt. She ended up, she did get a, have a chance at one and just doesn't know exactly what happened. Nothing. I mean, it's live and well, unfortunately. Unfortunately, so anyway, but going there, I'm like, yeah, I think I've got a little rattle. Yeah. Well, it was a warped. It was like, like a little bit of a warp on the exhaust manifold. And there was some little bit of, so it's a little diesel. And so anyway, I'm like, well, can I drive this? Can I just keep driving this? And they're like, yeah, I just keep driving. No problem. I'm like, all right. Well, I don't think they meant to Oklahoma. You know. They meant to Oklahoma. Like around town. Grocery gather. Until Monday before you can get it in and get fixed.

Yeah, whatever. Right? And so I'm like, go out there. 1,500 each way. Yeah, each way. Right? And then anyway, when I woke up one morning and I went to start it and it was like the worst, loudest noises you can ever imagine. And what it ends up being is breaking off, shearing off the bolts of the exhaust manifold in the head. And then it runs different, you know, like the air going across the turbo is different. It changes that. And the turbo is just so loud. And you think you're ruining everything. I mean, you, I mean, I'm just like, and it's the day before Thanksgiving. I mean, just like John. Then you have Thanksgiving. Then you have Friday. Then you have Saturday. Then you have Sunday. No one's working. It's worse than my Saturday. They don't work for five days in a row. No. Yeah. And you think you got some little jank tools in the back that you're going to be able to do anything.

So anyway, the rancher that we were hunting on anyway, he's like, let me, let me mess with it. And he's, he's quite a mechanic. I was shocked. But anyway, he's like, well, here you go. This is your problem. And verified where we were at. He's like, just drive it. It'll be fine. I'm like, okay. You can't run a heater on, really, because you're getting all the exhaust. Anyway, ended up, made it home, just crushed it and pulled it into the shop. And they're like, six of your 12 manifold or your exhaust manifold bolts are busted off in the head. Like six of the 12. He's like, I've never seen one this bad. So anyway, they ended up getting them all out. I didn't have to buy a new head or anything. But he says, this is cherry, actually. He's like, this is cherry. This is amazing. Anyway, you know, all the typical stuff that I talk about. My truck's the bestest truck ever.

Fixed it on the road again. Crushing it's great. That's it. So there you have it. Speaking of on the road, do you think Devin's on the road? Yeah. He's on the road, Gil. Well, he could be checking out a few res dogs.

I was like, does he not know that his tires are almost sideways? He's going like 55 miles down the highway?

It's pretty crazy. Hey, they get a new truck until they need a new one. You're in and around the res. You see about everything. Have you seen any res dogs down there? As in coyotes or red dogs? Or coy dogs.

I've seen red dogs, yes. No coyotes? Is there a difference? I saw one dead coyote. That's the only game anything hit on the road that I saw. So speaking of ball joints and bad roads, did you know they make ball joint delete kits? What? Yeah. Ball joint what? Delete kits. I was at lunch. You know how Wyatt knows a little bit about everything? Yeah. Wyatt's like, man, they make ball joint delete kits. So sure enough, there's ball joint delete kits out there for certain vehicles. And it's kind of interesting. Yeah, you can buy them for like Ford and Dodge. Huh. I don't know. I don't know what else is out there. Yeah, but I mean, could you imagine how many kits they would sell for these little Tacomas? Yeah. Jeez. They'd sell a lot of them. Half the trucks I've owned had recalls on those. Yeah. Like tanks you would think should be dry. I had a lot of water. We talked about Arizona. That's what a lot of guys are saying is there's been tanks that have been dry for three years that have water right now. Yeah. Like, not deep tanks. I'm looking at like a large amount of water that you wouldn't think would have water ever. You know? Yeah. So, I don't know. It's just probably just hanging on since October, I guess. Late October, early November stuff. Yeah. Well, it doesn't... Jeez, Devin, you're getting me excited. You're going to alter my application strategy right now. And in some portions, like putting green grass, man. I'm telling you. Jeez. Wow. All right. Only in certain places. But for the most part, it's dead and dry. What about the Navajo?
