EP 395: A 400" Utah Archery Bull and Gearing Up for the Season

Wyatt, how are you doing? Cash can't talk. I'm good. Wyatt, talk. Things are good. Devin? Selling tags and hunts like it's his job. Devin, how's everything going over there in your office? Good. Good. Couldn't be better? It's a little cold sometimes, but yeah. What did you think of this new app we got coming out? It's basically going to showcase hunts and draws and all the things. It's awesome. It's easier for you. I ask Logie questions all the time. Are they going to give you keys to the kingdom to be able to upload hunts and stuff, or are you going to have to go through Logie Bear? I do it all myself. It's already all Devin's. I should gate it so it goes through me. No. That's smart. That's not smart. Everything flows through me. You would love that. He would love that. That's not happening. Give it two weeks. Yeah. We automate here. There's all kinds of changes each and every day.

Logan, tell us about the notification change you just made. Yeah. Just this morning, we pushed out an update that allows you to choose what you want to receive notifications for. You can choose draw odds, draw deadlines, guided hunts, and optics. Sometimes we have blowout specials on optics. Sometimes there's a new product. Sometimes things that have been really sought after get restocked that people would like to know about. Buy one, get one. Free. Yeah. Yeah. Buy one, get three. I have just seen if who's awake. Remember, we did those Wazoo specials with Zeiss years ago. They were awesome. Did the Bronson bundles. Let's bring it back. We could bundle some stuff up. Is that authorization for me to go wild? Yeah. I mean, I bundle a headlamp and a hat and a pair of terrors. Ten to $20 items. A pair of terrors. Off you go. I don't know. We should do something like that. Cool.

So anything else coming out? What else are you working on over there? Along the lines of that. Wyatt says he doesn't see a lot of work coming from your office. Yeah. Wyatt tells me he fears my computer screens. Well, I mean. All those black screens. They just type by themselves. They're true. That's AI doing his job for you. Yeah. Who knows what's going on over there? Yeah. I'm not telling any of you. Do you even work here or is it your AI companion? I pretty much just have enough bots set up that I can just sit there and click go, go, go. And it makes it look in-depth and complicated enough that we don't ask any questions? That's my point is I want to make it just complicated enough that, you know, you can't fire me and I still have a job security. You ever heard of those people that they find out had like six jobs at the same time? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah.

Like these work from home people that just do circles? Well, he wears all these weird. Do they do that? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They just have like because when you work from home, oftentimes this company sends you a laptop and they just have it set up a circle of laptops around them. Jeez. And this one guy got busted not very long ago with like, what was it done? Five or six jobs? I think we're talking about the same guy. I've heard of him. I don't know where I saw it. But, yeah, people get. Guy was multitasking. Making a ton of money. I mean, is it illegal to have five or six jobs? No. It's not illegal. No. John, you've got a couple of jobs. I've got a couple of jobs. You're a landscaper job. Yeah. Yeah. You've got baby and delivery. Emergency services. What else you got, John? You got a dog sitting job. Really? Automotive mechanical? You dog sit? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah.

I mean, it just depends on what kid needs a dog sat.

He's a furniture delivery guy. Oh, yeah. So, it's not illegal to have multiple jobs. Some mixer repairmen. I guess that's the company's fault for not checking in and being lazy. Yeah, I guess. I don't know. If they don't have enough work to do that they can do five jobs at once, that's kind of a problem, too. Yeah. Yeah, cool. All right. What else are you working on in the app, Logan? Just along those notification groupings, more stuff is coming down the line where you'll be able to filter in with, like, Devin's hunts. If you want something really specific you're looking for, we could have notifications go off when it comes online. Discounted. Mm-hmm. Stuff like that. Apps are cool. I just think we just got to make sure, I think, not to lose that personal service of, you know, people can talk to a real dude. Yeah, always. John and I were just talking about it this morning.

We need to put a call button in the app where you can make sure that you can always call and talk to us about whatever you want all the time. And would that look something like you hit a button and it pops up the number, like, boom, you can call, like, boom, boom. I'm thinking about sending it right to Wyatt's personal cell phone. I was going to say, call. I like that. I like it, Wyatt. Call WB. I think we'll just list out all the guys and see what one they want to call. Oh, I'll field calls. Oh, nice. Not me, of course. I'll get you a burner phone number. When I get the number, I'll get you. Logan has a lot of terrible ideas. You guys notice that? Seems vindictive. It all comes around, Logie Bearer. Devin, you've been selling muzzlers like it's your job. Tell us about that. I do that, too. Say I want to, I want to, I'm in New Mexico, iron sights only. I just want you to set me up with a muzzler. Tell me what you would tell me. Yeah, the guy just did that yesterday. He was out the door less than a thousand bucks. Brand new, 2026 model, MRX. And you were like, I hate to upsole him to a range rod. Accessories. Well, Wendy hates those because they're paying the ship. Yeah. But they're so worth having. Yeah. So if I want a new CVA muzzler, I can call you and you will set me up with what? The muzzler. The range rod. Muzzle brake. The muzzle brake. Range rod. The sight. Whether it be a, you know, one power or open sight. Two, a couple different options there. But yeah. That's awesome. And we got inventory sitting here, ready to go, right? Anyways, yeah.

We talk about, I mean, certain powders. The Blackhorn 209 is hard to find, as we all know, if you don't have a, you know, stash of it. I think that's the biggest hurdle for most people. But there's other powders. Yeah. Pyrotex. Yeah. It's all over out there. Black powder. How about that? No, I don't like that. Triple F gene. You know, all that. Double F. Huh? You lost me. 48, 31. All right, Devin. What other hats do you wear? You're also dealing in Fierce Firearms, right? Yeah. We're dealing with them here as a company. TS Customs. TS Customs. Yeah, it's great. That's awesome. Yeah, it's awesome. Right on. Pretty exciting stuff. There's a lot of elk tags out there for people that are still looking to have nothing. Guided, especially. Yeah. Yeah, isn't that crazy? There's a lot. Different price points. If you're wanting an elk hunt, there are hunts to be had. We've got guys with tags.

It's time. Guaranteed tags. Landowner tags with guide service or not or whatever. So, anyway, give us a call if you're looking for something like that. Wyatt, what do you got going on at your desk? You know, pretty wound down in the license application side of things. A few states open for points-only application periods. Then just kind of buttoning up loose ends, updating points, updating notes, different changes like that. It's kind of what the license app is up to right now. Mm-hmm. Anything you're hearing from between you and the ladies that's new and different? I don't think there is. I already did my points. I didn't think anything was Montana or Wyoming. Yeah, nothing jumps out. You know, Wyoming's going to increase next year, but that doesn't go into effect until 2027. Jump up their point fees from, what, 32? Well, 52, 42, and 31 to 75. $75 across the board. Yeah. Yeah.

So, yeah, that's one thing that's constant is price increases, it feels like. Yeah. Some states more than others or higher than others, but. Seems like every year we deal with at least one state increasing, you know, having a major increase or something like that. And then it starts a little chain reaction because that trickles to other states and they see what other states are charging for an out tag. No state wants to be the cheapest. They don't want to be the cheapest. They want to push the next envelope a little bit higher. Even Arizona's talking about price increases now. Wow. Are they? Yeah. They haven't had one forever. Yes, exactly. Yeah, they got meetings about it. So, it's like everybody's starting to be like, ah.

As long as they don't do, you know, price increase with, you know, based on the consumer price index and the Phoenix Sun Gazette or whatever every July, January 1st, like other states do. I mean, it's so janky to do it that way. It is. It is. Down to the penny. It is. Fraction. Yeah. So, we got Montana points, Wyoming points, Oregon points. If you didn't apply for points during the regular out period, which I know, Bronson, you're applying for Oregon points like it's your job. What gives you that impression? I just assume you do because you apply for everything. No, I don't. Yeah, I'll get the Alaska overview and opportunity tags. Opportunity tags, Cash. How'd that go? It was good. Good. There was a few changes in there to talk about, I guess. You've got, I mean, you've got the second draw on the controlled hunts. That's coming up August 5 to 15.

So, if you're looking for something that's been returned, a chance to draw something again, there's an opportunity there. Then, the changes with Colorado, there's a few units that went from over the counter to limited draws. And then, there's, I mean, there's going to be a pile of return tags and leftover tags out there. And then, Utah, spike tags went on sale today. It's always a great opportunity for someone looking for an opportunity just to go and chase elk on, really, some of the best units in the state. So, all of this stuff can be found on our August-September issue of the magazine. Guess what? I just looked at it on our app. Nice, yeah. And I'm scrolling it and pinching to Zoom and all the things that you put on there, Logan. Awesome. Yeah. So, seems pretty cool. Seems easy. I'm scrolling like crazy. What's the pick of the day? I haven't been on there today.

Yeah. 24 hours, right? 24 hours. You get one chance. What do you mean? What if I want to go see it again? You have to like it if you want to see it again. Wait, what? You have to see it in the first place, though. Yeah. And then there's a, right next to the title of trophy of the day, it says view liked. So, you go there. Oh, view liked. Okay. I've got one. And I liked one. And then you want to go and read the story or, you know, it's going to be in your list. Of those, the list. Okay. But if I don't like it, it's gone forever.

I can never go see this. You can't go see it. Until it recycles again. Recycles. Gives you a reason to go. Probably won't ever come back. Probably won't. I mean, it could if we ran out, but we won't run out. Yeah. We've got thousands. Yeah. Like, literally thousands. Yes. One of the kind of really cool things is it's giving us another place to publish some of the stuff that maybe people didn't send in or maybe they weren't a member when they killed something great. And people are submitting those and even like guys are, it's really easy to do on the phone because it's on your camera roll. You just upload it. And then to tell us kind of, you know, a short little bit about the hunt, they're doing like voice dictation. So you just, you know, click in there and hit the microphone button and talk for a minute and then you shut it off and submit it. Right. So super easy.

It's kind of, it's been cool to see some of the, some of the stuff from like, you know, 2023, 2024, stuff like that. It's not like this last year. So people are submitting any, any old photo they wanted to do. Yeah. Yeah. Yep. So lots. And then those will show up in there. We should have a contest like submit for photos from pre-1970. Damn. You know what I mean? Like let's submit the old school stuff. Like deer look different back then. Digital copies only. Deer were built different. Oh, a lot. Scan of a, scan of a, scan of a, scan of a. Picture of a picture. Yeah, exactly. I took this picture on a cork board in Fruita. Picture of a slide held up to a light bulb. Exactly. One tin film, 35 millimeter. Anyway, I'm just saying maybe a Polaroid pick from back in the day. That'd be cool. That'd be cool. Yeah. Mine aren't 70s, but probably 80s, Carter. Make that happen.

Me and you could probably do some 80s, but I'm about 70s. Yeah, I want to see the old school, old time bucks that like are in the Utah's biggest bucks book. Like what Wyatt's got. That's pretty legit. Yeah, pretty cool to look through. Like pages of volumes. Of what there isn't now. Of what we only can find one in Saskatchewan or something. All right. So let's see. I see this. I mean, I've got some up. I've got about five in there, which is kind of cool. What did you do for testing? Were you a beta tester, John? Yeah. So a lot of times when you're talking to somebody, or at least we do, like hunting comes up a lot. And, you know, they're talking about, I hunted this unit. And you're like, oh, I hunted that too. This is what I killed. You scroll through 2,000 pictures in your camera roll. You've got your family photos and everything. And, you know, you can just get to it right quick. It's true. It's all in one place. Yeah.

Draw, okay. And then I've got the main buttons at the bottom. Home, estate info, draw odds, and magazine, which we were just reading our August, September. So speaking of August, September, Bronson, we've got some really cool stories in there. Like the stories never ended. And, yeah, these magazines now, we don't cover heavy, heavy state stuff. We had a few points only alerts and Cash's article about opportunity tags. Devin had one on an Alaska overview. But, I mean, they're still not the 30 or 40 pages like we do when you break down a state earlier in the year. So we have a lot of space in there to put stories. And this one was no joke. Yep. Yeah. A lot of stories in there. And the rest of the summer will be that way. Really cool. It's awesome. Anything else you guys want to alert people to to what we've got going on right now for the summer? There's a lot of scouting, obviously.

That's interesting. Everybody's trying to figure out what this year is going to look like. What's your guys' opinion, maybe the outlook? What you're hearing, what you're seeing, Wyatt? From what I've seen and heard, I'd probably say average. I mean, I wouldn't necessarily say it's a terribly down year. Definitely think there's pockets of good and pockets of bad. Yeah. Yeah. So overall average is what I'm going to go with. Seems like the further north you get, the kind of better it gets for a little bit. As far as my growth. Seems like kind of those northern states are doing okay. And further south you get, the worse it gets. You like Montana, what you're seeing up there? Oh, yeah. Yes. I've been seeing some really solid stuff in Montana.

Hey, you've been watching the weather. How about the fires? Of course, Bronson, you talked about that in your article in this magazine, a little bit on the fires and stuff. Nice that they're, well, at least the Utah ones. I haven't seen Colorado today. But these Utah ones are, I don't want to say petering out because they could blow up at any moment. But this rain's coming at the perfect time. Helped a lot. Yeah. It's going to help a ton, isn't it? The big ones at least. Yep. So hopefully that continues this next week. And just get them out completely and start on the rehabbing. And you're going to have coverts. It's going to be ugly on these units. It's going to be ugly. The rain's, yeah, you want rain, you want moisture, monsoons comes all at once. And then it's just, there's, you know, it's like a whole mountain is like an apron shedding all the waters. You know, just like asphalt.

How about that black water headed to Minersville Reservoir? Ugh. It's black. Why it? Well, at lunch, right before lunch, there's a red spot over the Beaver Fire. The fire. I mean, it's. The red spot. It's happened every day. Significant rain. How did it affect the fish in Penguish Lake? Do you remember how they were having all that big rush from that fire? Didn't they? What did they do? They turned into catfish.

Bottom dwellers. Mud fish. Suckerfish. That causes fish to evolve and grow legs, and that's how they get on land. Turn it across. That's how stuff like that started back then. You're stuck in the mud to survive long enough. I'm buying it. Just salamanders. I'm buying it. Exactly. Pretty funny.

But, yeah, no, there's been a lot of that. And, you know, probably, I mean, a lot of states have had them. But, you know, Arizona's had some, a little bit smaller. But Utah and Colorado especially. So, hopefully, they get a good dousing of these rains the next couple weeks and just can move on from that, start on the rehab and repair and get the forests open again. And I know there's a lot of bow hunters out there probably going to be affected by some of these Utah ones that start in less than 30 days now. So, pretty awesome. The hunts are here. That's what's crazy. They're here. But there's also, again, lots of openings we're talking about, right, Devin? There just seems like more. Do you feel like there's more than there has been or more than normal?

Yeah, I think so. I do. And there's always a little bit of variety. There's always something out there. But it just feels like, yeah, the variety right now is really good. Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, you're looking for something and you've got time. Let's do it. I don't know. Bronson, what do you think about maybe we talk to old Matt Warner, the cover, and talk about his giant bull just in. Speaking of an awesome story and a giant bull from this August, September, Max. I'm a cover. Yeah. I love the hunting stories. Of course, we all do. And I don't know. Let's call him. See what he has to say about it. Maybe he'll walk us through his success story here on that giant.

Hello. Hey, Matt. Jason Carter and the Epic Outdoors crew. How are you? I am doing great. How are you guys? Good. We're doing good. We just want to hear a giant bull story maybe.

Do you know a guy that's killed a big one? You know what's great about AI, and you guys talk about this a lot, is you can generate these monster bulls that you pretend to kill. It happened. That's probably how Logan's killed all the deer that he's killed. Every single thing. Exactly. Yeah. And you can add inches. Easy enough. You know, you kill a little three-point, and suddenly it looks like a 200-incher. Used to be you have to put your camera on .5 or whatever. Now we can just ask AI to do it. Yep. Yep. So. Logan knows all about that. And I feel like I made it to be on the Epic Outdoors podcast, man. This is, there's like my daughter's birth. That's number two now. And then this is the Outdoors podcast. All right. It's like number one. Jeez. I would have, I'm going to go out on a limb. I think your priorities are messed up.

Maybe not wrong. Maybe not wrong. Pretty awesome. Well, I know this story's a lot more than about just the kills. So maybe start us off with it and some challenges and whatnot, and just take us through the whole story there. The whole story. So we've got time for this. We'll make it. We like to go home at five, but yeah. Good deal. Yeah. So it's, I had just been introduced to archery and just fell in love. So I've kind of, I went with my dad hunting growing up, but he's never killed a deer in his life. So I didn't really have a great example there. I didn't know that that was like not normal to not go out and kind of shoot animals. So I just started picking it up myself along the, along the way. And, you know, it was always the traditional rifle hunting that got introduced to muzzleloader and through a buddy. It was archery.

And so just the process, the shot, the prep, just absolutely loved it. So I, you know, using a borrowed bow, I fall in love. Thank goodness for my Gilbert and let me borrow that bow. And at about the time I just created this love archery, I go into a doctor's appointment and they, they give me the bad news. You've got a really rare form of cancer and it's in my neck. And after just a number of appointments and it's surgery after surgery, after surgery, it, they're getting ready to roll me back. And he says, look, I, I hate to break it to you, but the nerve that controls your right arm, it, we're likely going to have to remove it to get the cancer out of your neck. And, you know, my first thing was, and Adam will appreciate in a second, am I going to be able to drop bow back and I'm not going to be able to go golfing? Hey. So those were my priorities at the time.

Again, these priorities are a little, it's real stuff. I had no kids. I had no kids at the time. This is the sport you can play as a 50 plus year old. That's right. So, um, it was like, okay, I'm, I'm probably waking up and, you know, it'll, my arm will be there, but it just won't have any mobility. So what happens from there? And, uh, you know, fast forward it, it, uh, I get out of surgery. Um, I'm able to move my fingertips and then it was okay. I can move my wrists. And now it's just physical therapy. Now it's my arm and more and more and more. And, um, it was everything. All the rehab was always the motion of like trying to draw a bow, just bands, just anything I could do to try to mimic drawing a bow. It was all my rehab. And, you know, took, uh, a year or two and it was, I was going into the archery shop and I would just stare at bows being like, man, I'm going to be here one day.

And I'm going to buy like my first brand new bow. And, uh, Jeremiah Wild Arrow, uh, be better than Mary. He'd kind of look at me. Like this guy's kind of like too key. Like he just keeps coming in and he's just looking at these bows. Kind of like a five-year-old looking at dirt bikes. You're just like, man. That's right. Yeah. Someday I'll be big and get myself an 80.

Exactly that. So, um, and I, it looked like I had a neck brace on for a big period of time. So it's like I was standing out. I was recognizable anywhere I'd go, but, um, yeah, was able to basically shoot a bow and it just, it's been a love ever since. And so that, uh, that's kind of been my passion is bow hunting. And, uh, first and foremost, bow hunting deer is, is the priority. And then, you know, you, you draw a tag and it's an elk and you just go, well, yeah, I guess I'll go.

Can't shoot too many of them. Right. Wyatt hasn't been dead against elk. Why, why have you, why do you hate elk? I don't necessarily hate elk, but I just, I know me, me old deer are the superior animal. So I just rather spend my time there. All right. Every elk you pack, every elk you pack out on your back, you make sure you hate elk more. Yeah. It's true. It's true. All right. But there's something special about these giants, these giant bulls. So giants are giants, right? So deer elk, I mean, they, they, uh, they turn heads. So yeah, pretty awesome. So how did you, you got back? Did, did, did, yeah. Did you start shooting a bow? Did I hear you say shooting a bow again or what? Yep. So a couple of years and was shooting a bow and, you know, just chasing animals with a bow and pretty unsuccessful. A lot of years and then became more and more successful here and there.

So, um, in, uh, kind of transitioning to maybe the more of the elk story, I, I dumped my 19 points on limited entry deer in 24. And, uh, drew a good tag, killed a decent deer and, uh, with a bow. Decent? Big, big deer? He, he's, he's not 200. He's in the 190 class. Jeez. Great deer. It's a typical. Yeah, it's, it's a good deer. It's a good deer. He's 32 inches wide. Come on. Yeah. He's not that decent. Jeez. That wide yards, little dropper on his right side. Yeah. Paisal, paisal points. 28 inches. Nothing you'd be interested in. Yeah. No. A lot of guys are, was fast. No, he's a, he's an awesome deer. He's just a straight typical 42 inches of mass.

20 inches. Like the Holy grail of each side, you know, hard horned mass, not fleshy velvet. Well, I don't know. It was probably fleshy velvet. Was that? That was velvet. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Pretty awesome. Pretty awesome. Yeah. So wondering what to do since I have a waiting period and, uh, put in for one of the top Utah units for elk and boom, one point drew it. Oh my gosh. That's why you got to apply. It's true. I know. Exactly. So you guys say it all the time. Have you drawn antelope yet?

You'd have to apply for it. Did you draw antelope this year? You could do the trifecta within five years. That's true. Yeah. That's what I'm giving for. So yeah, it'll be with the bow as well, but it, uh, didn't draw this year on shop. So, yeah, I need to adjust your unit selection. But yeah, that's awesome. All right. So, uh, yeah, I, I guess the, so after drawing that tag, the deer tag, uh, I was kind of invited to get on board with Utah premier outfitters to, to guide. Um, so Russ over there after he heard, I drew, uh, the elk tag says, let me make a couple calls and I'm going to call, I think a guy, you know, Jason fairly well, Mitch Carter. Oh yeah. Relative. We're relatives. Yep. Hard hunting dudes. Yeah. So, um, made an introduction and just a, an agreement here and through a, just an awesome friendship that was created, we, we chased elk together and, you know, a bunch of the crew

over there at Beaver Mountain Outfitters. So, you know, just went, uh, went hard and went solo sometimes, went with the fellas other times and we, uh, we got after it. So I don't catch, uh, those about really well. So, um, there's some, some good bulls, but I, uh, was shockingly just patient, really, really patient. I just knew something good was going to happen. Uh, the bull I ended up killing, uh, Beaver Mountain guys had some trail cam pictures of him and, uh, he was kind of the number one. Um, but just leading up to the hub, we weren't able to put eyes on him. So it seemed like he'd kind of disappeared and as much scouting went into that bull and a number of others, uh, we, we made a pivot and on the opener and we chased another bull forever, never even got close, just canyon after canyon, sleeping on the hill, you know, unintended and we just couldn't catch up to him.

Um, we chased another bull, I had a buddy camped out on him. Spencer Gilbert was just like a stud waiting, waiting, waiting. Just, we were chasing this other bull, uh, showed up there. He disappeared. Um, so it was, it was just a grind. We just couldn't, it didn't even feel like we were in the game. And I was joking the whole time. Like if we would have had a rifle, the outcome would have been the same. Like it wasn't even like we were getting close. So it was, it was an interesting year for us. Not a, not a ton of rut, rut activity. Um, yeah, I think we only called in really one bull the whole time. So it's a little early. It opens up a little early and rut gets going toward the end, you know? Well, that's, that's about what it took me to kill. So it was 18 days, uh, just grind. Wow. Did you hunt solid or do you bounce back home for a little bit and come back?

I mean, or do you hunt most every day from the start? Yeah, I, I, I definitely bounced home. Um, so try to head home like on a Sunday, take a day or two, breathe there and then kind of reset, get my legs back and then head back down. So that, that's how I was kind of approaching it. Um, just that day or two, just kind of reset the mind. I know I was getting frustrated. I had buddies coming down and, you know, on, on the mountain we were hunting, it's like, you're looking at a bull and he's three 73 80. And they're like, you're not, you're not going after it. And this is early in the hunt. And I was like, no, you know, I'm just going to wait and, you know, hopefully chase one of the, the upper end bulls that were there. And, um, so I, it was wearing on us for, for sure. And I just kept, kept saying, I'm like, Hey, you know, if, uh, whenever it happens, it's

just going to make the story that much greater than when it does. And, um, I was perfectly okay going home, you know, if, uh, I didn't kill one of the bulls I wanted and, you know, you just kept grinding and grinding. Like for deer, you wouldn't have been okay. But for elk, we're okay. We're okay.

One point, whatever. No biggie. Pretty awesome. That's especially when it ends like it did. So anyway, yeah, keep going. So you gotta, you gotta plan. It's either big or nothing. Yeah. Yep. Um, and it, it, it's not like it's easy to get around and after them. I mean, seeing them is one thing and then getting to where they're at is another. Um, so I had, uh, I'd gotten close to one other bull that was kind of on the hit list and just didn't have a shot. Um, but other than that, it was like, there was like not even a close call with a, with a shooter bull. It was, it was just crazy. So yeah. Fast forward, we're actually, you know, chasing another bull in the morning that, uh, it kind of been found, but it'd been a little bit of a no show. Um, spent all morning, you know, in a Canyon, couldn't turn them up, couldn't turn them up. So we backed out.

Are you, are you hunting these bulls still at this point? More like, more like a deer, this glass spot, intercept ambush. Are they at all moving in with cows or at all bugling at all? You ever sit in wallows? I mean, is there anything, what is the tactic? Yeah, we were, it was, it was mostly spot and stock and even the bull I killed, it was spot and stock. So we were, we were using rut activity generated by, you know, satellite bulls to hone in on the, you know, on the target bulls. But we, we actually weren't even using location bugles, like very few of those, um, a lot of glassing. Cow calling emergency when you're close or something like that, but nothing. I mean, we weren't close. So we, I, I, I should have just saved the cow calls and all the calls at that point, really, because they weren't being effective. Um, you know, the few times when we did use them.

So, but yeah, it was, uh, it was mostly kind of spot and stock. And then, you know, if we would have been close, could that have changed? Certainly, maybe. Um, you know, we, we had scraped, um, a tree one time and we got, you know, a bull. We ended up passing. I think he's probably in 370, 375 mark. Uh, pretty amazing are passing bulls like this. You know what I mean? Yeah, I know. As a non-elk hunter to, to have a bull in that close, shoot a range and to just kind of shrug your shoulders and be like, yeah, that was cool. It, it was, uh, it did to dream up for sure. Yeah. Quite a testament to the quality of tags. Yeah. In Utah and other places. So makes, uh, makes, makes you nervous about some of the management. Uh, but that's a different topic with the amount of tags issued, but, um, yeah. So chase the, chase the bull that morning. I shouldn't say chase the bull, tried to find a bull.

And then, um, one of the guys was up in a Canyon and said, Hey, we found the bull that, uh, I ended up killing. And I was just shocked, right? You're, you're almost three weeks into a season and, um, you're coming down to the last, you know, week and you've been hoping to find this bull the whole time and haven't found him and suddenly shows. And so excitement got, you know, really high. And, um, I started, uh, started packing a bag for an overnighter and, um, we, uh, we headed up that afternoon and hiked in and, um, set up a little base camp and, um, the, the guys had, had found him again. So this is now twice in, in, uh, you know, same day that we'd seen the bull. So, so I was, uh, a lot of anticipation, a lot of excitement. We were just hiking our guts out. And at this point, I mean, you guys know how it is. You're that far into a hunt hiking these kinds of miles. Yeah.

I would just be drained, just, yeah. Trying to stay positive. And I remember, um, as I was hiking in and I think it's in the story, I'm just like sobbing behind my sunglasses, just like all the time and effort. Um, you know, the guys are putting in and buddies are putting in and everybody's just going hard. And, you know, my wife was just like, don't come home till you shoot the one you want. That meant the world to me. I don't know. That's a trophy wife. Yeah. Could you repeat that for all the husbands here that might want to play that to their wife? Well, and Jana edits these podcasts. Jana, this is pretty significant. What did she say again? Stay until the kills get the one you want. I love it. Yeah. That's awesome. Words every husband loves to hear. Yep. Yep. So she'll appreciate that I said that even though I doubt she'll listen.

You might have to play it for her. You might just have to play it for her. A trip to St. George or something. Yep. Yep. All right. So, yeah, we got close that evening.

We got to, as far as I could tell on the map, I had measured about 140 yards and just the kind of terrain he was in. Just those little tiny aspens that just grow in so thick. I just thought there's no way we're going to be able to like stock in and get close. So, it was a tough decision. It was a tough decision. But I was like, I think we got to back out. I know this bull may not stay here, but let's play it right. Because if we bumped him one time, I mean, he's gone. So, yeah. So, yeah. And how far was he from where they had originally found him or y'all had originally found him? I think with, you know, a thousand yard area roughly. So, not too far. It's almost like he didn't leave. It just was hard to find. Thick. Not thick. Yeah. Was he a cow or alone? He was alone, actually. In fact, if you look at the pictures, you can see a bunch of marks on his hide. Yeah.

It's in the story, but there was like a 360, 370 bull that had the cows that was in the area. I'm pretty sure he lost a fight. Like, because he looks like he got gored up pretty good. Just on that hide side. So, I think he was licking some wounds and maybe going to go try again. But he was, yeah, he didn't have any cows at the time. So, but he was starting to scream. So, that was, that ended up being, you know, to his demise as he would, the next day.

Well, I'm telling a few stories. Let me pause there. We backed out, didn't, didn't end up doing anything on, on Friday. And that was a long night's sleep, questioning whether we made the right decision. So, that was on like a Friday night, Saturday, with nobody found, we couldn't find them. We were up and down, left and right, you know, guy over here, moving over there. We just couldn't turn them up. So, nothing, nothing Saturday, all the way up to the point where I pull a stake from a tent to hike out of there. And it's raining like a dirty dog. And there's lightning going on, going on all around. And one of the guys was still just on point. He's just like, dude, we found him. And that was like hope at that point. So, I was like, well, we're staying another night. We got water. We don't got food. But we'll figure it out tomorrow. So, morning came.

And it was, you know, bull screaming around you. And you just hope it's him. But I kept saying, I'm like, there's got to, there's like a series of miracles that has to happen, you know, in order for this to take place. And the first one was, is that 360 bull cow. We, we managed to get around the herd. We got low. It was early in the morning. The wind was coming down. You know, we, we seen him that morning. That was the other miracle. But, you know, now he's, we found him twice. Well, now really a third time.

Got a good landmark on where to start the stock. And we just started going up the mountain. The wind was blowing down. So, we're, we're hiking up. Just checking the wind. Just every second. Every second. Every second. Just making sure it wasn't going to switch. Kind of just got into this tiny little ravine. And just kept working our way up. And having not bumped that 360 bull, it was, he would scream. And then we could hear a bugle in the trees. And we kept thinking, okay, this is him. This is, you know, he fed in to the trees in this area. And that kind of gave us a mark. And so, we just kept stalking as if it was him. And finally, we picked up a time. You know, step glass, step glass, step glass. Picked out a time. And then a couple more times. And then he's just got giant thirds. And that's, that's what, you know, finally recognized. And it's him.

And we're at about 80 yards at that point. So, that's how close we were before we could see him. It was, it felt like we were in close. And then spent about two, two and a half hours between that, that distance and about 50, 55 yards where I shot him. And I'd actually rolled the sight to 53 when I, when I ended up shooting him. But just got close and he was facing us, bedded. And yeah, I just had to wait and wait and wait. And he turned up, stood up at one point. And just, I think at this point, I'm pretty good at archery. Like, I squeeze in some tight shots and shoot a bunch. And I just couldn't, I just couldn't let an arrow go. And we watched him for maybe 10, 15 minutes. And didn't dare move to try to get a shot. But, so, just kept waiting, kept waiting. I, I think I drew back at one point. And I was just, there's just no way to get an arrow through there.

And I don't want to wound him and chase him. So, wasn't convinced. And just magically, even though he'd stepped a little bit, he turned and laid right back down in his, basically in the same bed. But he was facing away. And I was like, okay, dude, you've got to find the lane. So, I had backed out a number of yards, you know, kind of got up the hill. And just, it was probably only three, four, five yards at most further kind of up the hill. And just finally had a gap between trees. And the only thing I knew is if he stood up and stepped, I was going to be back in the same scenario where I wouldn't be able to get a shot. So, I, I was like, if he stands, the arrow's got to be on its way, like that quick. And just waited, waited. Started kicking out a flat spot in the dirt just to get my feet super level. So, I wasn't standing on a slope. And just waited, waited.

And eventually, I saw that, you know, hind come up. And it was, you know, you just, you don't remember drawing. You don't remember anchoring. You don't remember haloing the peep. And it's, it's in the story probably better than I'm telling it. But, so, yeah, hopefully the readers, listeners read it. But that pin hit the shoulder. And I just remember screaming at myself. Just like, get the pin back. Get the pin back. And he's, he's pretty quartered away. And so, it, it moved back. Shot went off. And I don't even think he'd, the joke is he hadn't even locked his front legs before I'd shot. So, it, I'd somehow drawn, anchored, you know, found the spot and shot. And it was. Fully, fully upright. Stretch, yeah. So, happened quickly. And then there's that, that doubt that creeps in. How good was the shot? Knew I'd buried the fletchings pretty well. But was it too far back?

And how hard was he quartered? You know, just all the scenarios in your mind of, like, what happened.

So, but I was pretty confident I'd made a good shot. I kind of celebrated really quickly. And then all those started setting in. And then I started to question. And we, you know, spotters couldn't, couldn't pick him out. Like, they'd seen him kind of run, but hadn't really, hadn't seen if he'd come out anywhere. And it's, again, super thick. So, waited our. How far are the spotters? Probably a mile or something like that. Long distance. Yeah. It was, it was, it was long distance glassing for sure. So, and it was just to the point, actually, that it was, the wind was blowing so hard. Um, that it was creating a separation in the trees and they could actually pick out his body. Um, and so they assumed it was him just based off of where they'd seen him go into the trees, you know, where we had gone in. Um, so it's kind of just, uh, that's probably him.

Um, and to be, to be honest, that, that, uh, that rainstorm, you know, the night before was a huge reason. We were able to get in close, just all the tree, all the leaves that had fallen, like they were all quiet. Um, so that played a huge factor. Um, so that was, that was a, a miracle in and of itself. But yeah, they, uh, they, they couldn't pick him out. Uh, so we just, uh, just waited and then started creeping. And I, he was less than 70 yards, deader than the door now. I mean, I, it was perfect shot, you know, very hard quartered away in the office shoulder. And, you know, the celebration starts at that point. So. Yeah. Pretty awesome. The moment. The relaxation finally hits. Uh, did he break? I mean, obviously, I don't know. It looks like there's something right there between the sword on the non-typical side, but I can't tell. No, that's just a hole, I guess, or something.

It is, yeah. It's, I don't know if like a beetle or something gets in there. That's a big question mark. It's like, what is that? It's like a divot in his horn. For having been in a fight and whatnot, everything was intact. Yeah. Yeah. So. What did he, what did he end up scoring? Not that that's everything, but people are always trying to learn how to judge. Yeah, one end. Yeah, he's, he trepped just over that, uh, that special mark for a bull by a few inches. No kidding. So, yeah. So he's over 400. 383. No. I don't know. Net, maybe. So did he, you're going to, did you score him? Like, you're going to put him in the book, net non-typical or anything like that? I, uh, you know, that, that's never been, uh. A thing. You know. A thing for me. Yeah. So I know there's, there's guys that have done it. I actually never, never myself put the tape on it. Yeah. Um, so. He's awesome.

I've seen him scored a bunch of times, you know, and I just. Well, everybody's trying to make sure they field judge him right. Especially the guides, you know, and spotters too. Yeah. Man, he's awesome. Maybe just a little bit of information like what you guys used for long distance glassing and some of the gear that was used. Um. I should, I should have started. This is all possible because Josh sold me a 95 ATX. Oh, no good. All right. Yeah. Oh. So you're an angled guy, of course. Yes, yes. Yeah. Um. The only way to go. Yeah. Yeah. We have this straight versus angled thing, but anyway. I know it. Yeah. I know it. Okay. I hear you guys talk about it all the time. We might have to edit this, Logan. No. He's staying in a smart guy. So a 95 ATX, what about the binos on tripods and things like that? Yeah. I, uh, I do have the Epic Outdoors tripod and head. That is a phenomenal setup.

Awesome. So kudos to you guys. Um. Also, um, I'm a, I, I have the 15x52 NLs. Uh-huh. So that's, uh, I, I generally have those in my pack and I have become addicted. I need to the SIG, uh. Stabilized. Uh, 16x42 Zulus as an archery hunter. Yeah. So that's what I carry on my chest, if you can believe it. And then, um, yeah, just, just to be able to just one hand it with a bow. Uh, it just. Yeah. You can one hand on stabilized mode is no joke. I'm sure. I never even thought of that. Yeah. Right. Like one hand. While you're walking. Huh. Pretty, pretty awesome. Yeah. That, that totally makes sense. So getting in close and picking out a time, I just, I just find it too, too convenient where I just get too shaky with chest and just running that. I feel the views terrible. The glass isn't as good. I know it. I know it all, but it's, it's just, it's been a difference maker. Crazy enough.

So, and if you got 14 power archery in close looking for a time, like that's good glass. That's good enough. 14 power is going to, you know, whatever. Plenty good for, for what you're doing. It's even if the glass isn't quite as good, the stabilized models are, you know, making up for it for sure. I'm just waiting for Swarovski to come out with their version. And then, then, then I'll probably have those too. I know. They come out with everything else. Hopefully. You talk to your wife again. She says, well, just hold out and get, if that's what you want, buy them. Hold out for the pair you want. I like it. Hold out for the pair. Hold out for the finals you really want. There you go. Exactly. There we go. That's a good wife right there. All right. Well, that's awesome. Well, congratulations. What an incredible story. Just a giant bull.

And at one point, I'm sure you got a lot of hate going on, you know, I mean, I killed a nice 32 inch, you know, pipe mass freaking 32 inches wide. And then I come on with a, well, I mean, he's just a little over 400. Pretty, pretty awesome run you've had there and kind of, kind of deserved really for dealing with some of the physical things you've dealt with. So anyway. Yeah. Yeah. Everything's helped. Well, thanks for having me on. You bet. Well, good luck with that 80 inch plus antelope. Next year, we'll get you back on. Get you on a waiting period so you can't even put in for any limited entry hunt in Utah. I'm really hoping. I would really love to be that guy. Utah antelope. Anything 65 plus is a trophy, right? Our prime season dates are the five-day early rifle or a muzzleloader type. Yeah. So, I mean, you get a 30-day, roughly, you know, four-week, whatever it is, archery hunt, but you're hunting them like a mule deer for at least the first two-thirds of the hunt. That's right. That's really what you're doing. But it's awesome. You're first on the unit and we have big bulls. Yeah. You know, so it's just great.

And depending on the unit, you can sip water and wallows and that, but it's got to be hot and it's raining like this. They're not going to have water wherever they need it. But yeah, that's what you... You hear that and we've all been a part of archery hunts in Utah with either ourselves or others and you better be prepared to hunt that way. It can be frustrating. You've got to be in it for the long haul. Yeah. Yep. All right. Anything else? Let's talk about... I want to talk about one thing, Bronson. You sold a Leica G-Vit-R, 10x42. Talked about SIGs a little bit. Tripods. John, we've got a huge inventory of tripods. Yeah, we're stocked up. Yeah, small, medium, large. Medium and large are both the same height, but one's just a little beefier. One's beefier. Yeah, just like if you're in harder winds, it's going to be a little bit more stable. We originally designed it to be like a truck tripod. And the weight came in like under five pounds and the Ultra is under four pounds. So, it's really a beefy tripod for the weight and the size. So, it turned out even, you know, from our initial thought, the end product was better. Mm-hmm. I saw, I got back there one day to Glass and saw a guy that had bought the Max. And it was further than I would want to pack one. He's like, no, it was no problem. You can get away with packing that. Yeah. By the way, he's like, it's not. Like, surprisingly.

We call it the beefy tripod, but in a pack. It's not. Well, we whine. It's not over the end. We whine a little bit. But the difference between my pack empty and Wyatt's brand, whatever it is, is probably a pound and a half. Yeah, exactly. It's just the difference in an empty pack. Oh, yeah. It's a water bottle. Yeah, it's not the end of the world. I don't know. Jason, you remember your Escalante sheep hunt? No. I don't remember. I do not recall. The tripod I packed in there was 10 pounds. I remember that. Come on. No, it was. Was that in the burn pile? No, that was over $100. Remember the $100 threshold? If it was under $100, I burned it. I mean, there was. I would say Bronson, he moved into the $200. I think things that were between $100 and $200 got burned, too. I think I packed out a tent, a sleeping bag, and that tripod. And the goof flask. Goof flask. And the goof flask, yeah.

Anyway, that tripod was no joke. But you were, in all honesty, you were just trying to document. You were videoing. Yeah, we were videoing. You and Chris. Of course, Chris at the time was like 23 or 24. I don't know. I remember Chris on the scouting trip. He was on creatine. And I mean, he was cramping. Oh. Didn't take any mustard. So we had no, there was no fixing. Oh, talk about mustard. We've talked about it before. That's for dinner. My, my. Why am I the mustard? Last night while laying in bed, I had a cramp in my calf. So there I was. No, I was just wondering, did we talk about pickle juice? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Mustard and pickle juice. I forgot. You could take, you could take Apex for powder. Oh, I do. John, do you like Apex? I do love Apex. Why? I've been. Why do you love Apex? Because I get cramps a lot. And I get dehydrated. So.

And then when you got dehydrated from doing the cleanse, you used Apex to get your back square. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. So. No, it's just. Logan has things to say. I just remember last year, there was some talk about, if I wasn't doing this and that, I'd be cleansing with you. And guess what? None of you guys are doing anything this year. So I want to see it. One week. I'm going sheep hunting. Maybe not. I cannot. I cannot tear my body down this close to it. I just want to see some cleansing going on. That was my same excuse last year. It was. There were only two of us that made the five days on the cleanse. We've tried to eat healthy our whole lives. We don't need a cleanse. Somebody called me the other day and like called Epic and asked to talk to me and they were going to start the cleanse pretty soon. And I can't remember their name.

So if you called in and did the cleanse, let us know how that went. He's probably not alive anymore. You realize you need some certifications to be able to act like their doctor and give him real medical advice. He's probably moved on to superhuman status right now. That's what it does to you. Did you give him a face? The guy's face down in the dirt. Logan's writing prescriptions for guys. Exactly. Dr. Logan. We've got a disclaimer. Don't do it if Wyatt does it. You know I'm not going to do it. You know you're safe. That's like the safest cop out ever. Wyatt, they're going to want us to do it next February right before Muscox or something. During the expo, you're going to do a cleanse? I have a feeling that's going to be a very intense hunt. We're going to need a little extra layer of blubber. So we're not doing it for now until that hunt's over with Wyatt.

At least we're not even thinking about it. We need all the fat we can get. All the layers. All right. Don't bring it up again. So then you go back in and say, no, I relinquished that permission. You've got to delete your account. You've got to get off the app. You've got to get off the app. You're either two feet in or you're out. The trend is right now is to post on there an official statement saying you do not get permission. I revoke my permission for Facebook. Do you do that? It's like chain mail is what it used to be.
