EP 396: What Can Go Wrong While Gathering Trail Cameras and Archery Season Prep

Hey everybody, Jason Carter, Adam Bronson, and John, where are you? John, John, where are you, John? John's not here, guys. Where's John? Nobody knows. We do not know. I think he's okay. I think I was the only one that knew he was leaving, and I didn't even ask where he was going. He's about his business, I guess. I don't know what he's doing. Don't ask, don't tell. All right. Well, was he a no-call, no-show? I guess he's still Logan. He's like, I'm leaving for a week, and then I come in this morning, and Jan is like, yeah. That was last week. He's gone for a week again. Jan is like, where's John? Is he coming in today? And I'm like, no, he's gone for a week. He didn't tell anybody but me. Jeez. And I didn't listen to where he was going or what he said. John's been listening to this lead boar stuff too much. He's gone for a week. Thinking Logan's the lead boar. He's alpha mailing. Logan.

Quit talking about his fantasy land with John. Where the lead boar does what he wants, whatever he wants. I'm teaching John how to be a man. Oh, man. Jeez. Wow. Pretty soon we'll get to the rest of you. Oh, man. It's getting really smelly in here. Yeah. All right. Well, all right. So we got Devin. Devin, how are you doing? Doing good. Are you? Yeah. Couldn't be better? Couldn't be better. Yeah. I like it. Wyatt, how are you? Things good here. Yeah. No complaints. No. No complaints. Your truck's in one piece still? Luckily, it's back in action. Wow. Back in action. I love it. Sounds like we got a story coming up. I love this. Cash, are you doing all right? Good. Yep. All right. Any more new dents in that truck? It's been through a few things. Not in this trip, no. I treated it pretty good. Good. The flashed one called made me nervous for a second, but I was good. What? We're good.

Every now and then, it's like, sir, a trailer break. Just on. All right. Your truck reminds me of like a river pop. You know how they just tumble and... Yeah. Dents and dings and stuff. Paint wears off. No big deal. The inside. The guts are good. The bones are good. The bones are good. The frame's straight. Frame's straight. Alternator's good now. Yeah, alternator's good now. How did you find out when the alternator wasn't good? I was actually contemplating that because I had the same kind of. I got stranded on the mountain and had to call my buddy Dylan to haul me off the mountain. And if you know Cedar Canyon, we towed down Cedar Canyon. And when you get to the top, you put the broke-down truck in front, and you let the other one be the brakes, and it works slick. I was going to say, because otherwise you're going to hit each other. Yeah. I had no brakes. What if something goes awry?

Do you keep the door open? No. His truck, his is like full-size diesel. Did you wear your seatbelt? So his could hang mine off a cliff and be fine. You see he's put on the. Just give it some. Yeah, he just put it in. The brake. First gear, and I roll, I coasted, and he just pulls the brakes from behind. And you made it to where there's no way it could come on. Probably engine brake. Oh, yeah. I like tied it onto his frame. It was pretty funny. Did you have to cut that rope, or did you get the knot undone? No. All the way it was slick. Yeah, we got it undone. Oh. Easy. Because it's like it has the slip knots on the end. Check out the farmer's knot he knows about. Yeah. Exactly. The granny knot. So what was the issue with that? The alternator went out. Yeah. And then they just slowly killed the battery, and I was running trail cameras that day.

And just got to the last stop, went and set a camera, and got back to the truck, and it was deader than a doornail. Had to put my battery booster on it. Didn't do anything, because I thought it was a starter, so I started pounding on the starter. It wasn't a starter. So, yeah. So I called in. Luckily, I had service right there, because I didn't take my Starlink with me. If you had to do it again, would you just come get an alternator and throw it on up there? No. No. It's a weekend. I mean, the alternator's warrantied, so. Yeah. It was $3.99. Yeah, it did end up being that. By like a week. I don't know what it is about trail cameras and pulling down the cameras, but everything bad happens on that trail cam week. Everything bad. Like last year, broke leaf springs. Had to go collect them in a one ton. Diesel. Remember? I don't remember. I mean, just. Geez. And then this year, again.

Wyatt had issues. No issues. I'm out in Jenktown, USA with a truck that's one of my kids. Wyatt. Wyatt went for a quick trip. Just to gather? Yeah. So, what, last Monday, the computer crashed out on me in the office. Loki told me it's going to take a little while. So, I'm like, well, it's close enough to the deadline. I might as well go grab my cameras out there in Nevada. Jump in my truck. Take off. Get out there. I get packed up and head out there. Anyways, you know, Nevada dirt roads. Just big, wide, two-lane things. You can get flying on them. I'm going 60 miles an hour on this dirt road. I need to make a very sharp left. Almost a 90. Oh. And the road continues to go straight, luckily, there. But, anyways, I go to hit the brakes just to slow down a little bit. And they just go clean to the floor. Not a bit of catch to it. This is before you've even been in, like, rough stuff. Yeah.

This is still main road. I haven't even hit the mountain stuff. Well, there's 60-mile-an-hour gravels. Yeah. Did you put your seatbelt on? No. I didn't think to do that. Probably should have. I mean, I was thinking the other day. I was like, every time I hit a dirt road, I take the seatbelt off. But you're always doing 60-70 on some of those roads. Yeah. You know what I mean? Yeah. But, anyways. Probably should have a seatbelt on. Get slowed down. Come back. Make the turn. And then I'm like, gosh, what's wrong? So, I jump up and get underneath the truck. And, I mean, it's just leaking brake fluid like crazy. All over the undercarriage. All over the front. I guess it was front driver's side. Just brake fluid. Did you hit a coyote driving out? No. Anything? Didn't hit a thing. So, anyways, I get looking at it. The EPA, I mean, you know, brake fluid can't be good for the environment. No.

You're supposed to go back and kitty litter your trail after you get back to town. I did. I did. Podcast purposes. He has a lot of kitty litter just around. Truck bed was full of kitty litter. 50-on drumming the bed of the truck at all times. I hate the smell of kitty litter. Ugh. It's terrible. So, anyways, get back there, jump under the truck, and I can see that the brake line has sheared a bolt off the, I guess it'd be like the A-arm. Oh. Okay. And that's where the rubber kind of comes down. For the hose, the brake line itself, which is a rubber hose. Then it turns to metal as it goes into the caliper. Yeah. So, it goes into a brass fitting, and then the brass fitting goes into the caliper. Yes. So, right there where it goes into the caliper, it's broke that, not the brass fitting, but the metal part that goes into it, or whatever, the metal too. Oh, okay. Like the bushing.

So, it's broke that off. So, I get my tool kit in the back of the truck, and anyways, I'm underneath there with a pair of pliers, and I'm trying to get it pinched off. Cramped on. Just to try to get some pressure back kind of deal. And hadn't seen another sole, and here rolls up a guy to me, and he's like, you know, he was a homesteader out there. Yeah. Super nice guy. He's like, you know, this actually happened to my daughter yesterday. What? So, I had to bring out a gallon of brake fluid to my house. For her. So, I've got it out there for her. Like, just pull it to my house, and I'll just top you off kind of deal. No way. I'm like, geez, what are the odds? Wyatt's the only person I know this would happen to. He lives right. Right? You're living right. He must be. Well, apparently this happened. So, I mean. Yeah.

Anyways, I jump under there, and we get it crimped off, and get rolling up the road. So, basically, you took vice grips and pinched off the metal, the brass fitting. Yes. And so, you've got some dribble. There's a little bit of leak. Some kind of pressure, yeah. Yeah. But anyways, we get up there, get some brake fluid at his place. He dumps it in. We get back on the road, and I feel pretty good. Like, it feels like it stops decent. I mean, it's not 100%. Yeah. There's an air bubble in there. Yeah. You're getting confident. Yeah. So, anyways, drop down off the first. Did you put a seatbelt on yet? No, I still haven't. So, use four low, drop down off the first dugway, get down there, grab the first camera, come back up. At first, I thought maybe I'll call it and go home after I get this first camera kind of deal. But then I kind of got cocky.

Like, oh, the next ones are kind of uphill, and as long as I keep going uphill and then use four low on the downhills, I'll be just fine. And it's getting dark now. You know, it's later in the evening and dark, and I'm cruising up the hill, and I mean, I'm getting cocky, as Devin says. You know, getting confident that, hey, I can stop this truck. And I come up over the top of a berm, kind of a rise there, thinking it's still going to be uphill, and it's all downhill. Just a quick little drop down into a, you know, big wash. And then... And you're on a two-tracker now. There's no gravel anymore. Yeah, this isn't a main road anymore. This is a mountain road. So as I come up over the top, I hit the brakes, try to stop. It won't let me stop. It's not even thinking about stopping.

So I crank it to the uphill side, and just when I cranked it to the uphill side, there happened to be a tree that I caught right there. Caved in the back door of my truck. This is... This is a clean... Clean... Two-owner. ...tuddy. It was. Oh, six. It was a beautiful truck. It was. It was a beautiful... Until I opened it, yeah. I mean, this is a pride and joy truck. I mean, it was cherry, cherry. So anyways... Clean as they get. I decide, you know, I'm here. I'm committed. It's dark. I'm going to go... Send it. I'm going to go to the top of the ridge, and I'm going to get these cameras. Yeah. So I go to the top of the ridge, get out, or get to the top of the ridge, and by this time, I can tell, like, my brakes are losing brake fluid. I've got not a lot left. Yeah. So I don't dare drop down off the dugway, so it's now 10, 30, 11 at night, and I'm going to just make a...

Called Carly and told her, like, hey, I'm jumping out of my truck, and I'm going to make a big circle tonight on foot, and I'll be back in a couple hours kind of deal. It's a snaky environment. Yeah. So I drop down off the dugway, and it ends up being just a little over a five-mile loop to gather my cameras. I had, what, four of them down there? Together them all, and then make it back up, and it was about, I don't know, 1.30 in the morning by the time I got back to the truck, and then I was pumped up, you know, adrenaline going, because I just made that hike, and I'm like, you know, I'm going to try to drive out of here. I made it about 100 yards down the road, and I'm like, maybe not in the dark. I probably shouldn't try this. So I leave the seat back and slept for a couple hours, and next morning, ended up just four low on it, limping it down out of there.

Grabbed my other two cameras on the way out of there that next morning, glassed for about 30 seconds, and then grabbed my other two cameras and headed for town, figured I could find some brake fluid at a little convenience store there, and no, they didn't have any, so I ended up limping it, you know, 70 miles back to civilization. A.K.A. Utah. Yeah, Utah. It's probably the longest drive from Nevada of your life. It was forever, but I made it into town, got some brake fluid, got to the mechanic, and he fixed it right up the next day, and now we're back in action. Are you? Ready to go. Yeah. How's the caved in? Let's see, you fixed that on your own, right? Yeah, I got a lot of it pushed out. They're still a pretty good size. I mean, it's probably 16 inches long by four inches across. How did you fix it? Just was hitting the door, and it would pop out. Anger. You know, anger kind of thing.

Yeah, that's where we're getting at. You're frustration. That's where we wanted to take you there. Thanks for going there. Well, it turns into the Hulk. It just got a boom. Did you get mad? I felt good, though. Did you pull off the interior panel, door panel? I haven't yet. No, that's my next thing. Oh, okay. I just started hitting it on the offside, and it just kept popping out. He took care of the low-hanging fruit first. Yeah, got the easy part out, and it made a guy feel kind of good about it. Good after it. Here I am just doing some body work in the desert in Nevada. Are you going to sell it, or are you going to? Oh, no. Me and Daryl, we have a lot of adventures left. Maybe get some new rear brakes. Did you call your insurance? I mean, you don't want to have the crease forever, do you? No, it's fine. It's not a fact. You're going to leave the crease? Yeah, it'll be all right.

It's a tell story. Tell a story. That's coming from you, Cash. Cash loves a crease. I got a few dancing things there, but there's a story behind every one. Yours looks like a river pop. It's not that bad. Come on. One side's uglier than the other.

As long as it gets me around, it doesn't have to look the best. There you go. Is that just the Nephi in us? I mean, you know? It could be. It probably is. Yeah. It is what it is at this point. Cash washes his truck, though, every once in a while. Daryl doesn't get a bath very often. Good rainstorm. The freeway free wash when it rains. Yeah, exactly. Devin, would you fix it if you were what? Probably not. You wouldn't? No. Really? No. It'll just happen again. Jeez, Adam. That's surprising me about these guys, Adam. They're usually pretty attentive to their things. I don't know. I'm just a little surprised. I'd have to see it first. Yeah.

My tendency would be to get it fixed, but I'd have to see what it is. I'll bring DW by tomorrow. I did that same thing to one of my trucks, and I didn't ever fix it. Creased it. The orange one. Oh, yeah. Yes. Slid it through the same thing. It does make you mad. You're at the mercy, and you're sliding sideways. I know that road you were on. It was not good. No. It's caused me some stress there. Anyway. But anyway, they do tell stories. That's interesting. Yeah. So anyway, and I was talking to another outfitter who happened to show up at the same water. And he's like, yeah, my side-by-side transmission went out, which that's what I was having, the side-by-side transmission issues. The electronics just weren't talking to the brains. And anyway, he's like, and so I've been gathering them on a dirt bike. And he's like, it's terrible.

Because you've got any number of cameras, which if you're running long distances in Nevada, you've got a good string out. And it's just terrible. He just wipes you out, you know. Probably for the first five, ten miles. There's no AC on a dirt bike. Yeah. Get a helmet on. No relief. Anyway, I've got him on all the waters, you know, pulling up on his dirt bike. Anyway, and it just feels like we were talking, and I was like, it feels like trail cam season is a stressful time where gear always breaks down, you know. Devin, you've had some pretty good experiences gathering up your cameras. Mine's pretty basic. I didn't have anything too bad. Yeah. Just dealing with overgrown ferns, covering up your cameras. Yeah, that's always wonderful. Haven't had a deer pick for the last 14 weeks. Nothing but green for about 10 days. Wind and green. Yeah. All right. So, Bronson, what do we got?

You're headed out here shortly. Yeah, it's August. Yeah. I wonder if it's flipped on Saturday. It's hard to believe. And I mean, even. Head to Alaska. Yeah, that. And then archery deer hunt's in another, what, 10 days here in Utah. Nevada deer starts in, what, five or six days. Yeah. 10th. So, I mean, it's Monday, I think that is. So, antelope are dying. Arizona archery deer will come up. I mean, there's just a lot going on. It's here. It is. It's unbelievable how fast the early part of summer's gone by. And it only goes faster during the hunts because it's just, we're all busy and things like that. And we'll hopefully have some good things to talk about here in the next couple of weeks. So, now that the scouting season's kind of coming to an end as far as trucking wise, at least, what's everybody's gut feel? What are we seeing out there? Logan? Logan? How are you doing?

I'm on your scouting projects. It was good. I'm a little bit light this year, but we're still going to hit it hard. Well, see, your country went through a major drought. Yeah. You were trying to find water. Oh, I ran half as many, probably a little less than half as many cameras as I was expecting to. And just, I put black pins when water's dried out. And if you looked at my Onyx, it's mostly black pins. Yeah. Up until about two weeks ago, right? Yeah. Yeah. And then you can't find anything anyway because they can water wherever they put their head down. You should change your pins. To blue bucks. You think I gave away too much? Buckheads. That means the water's dry. And then just see, you know, these Onyx people look at your pins. I mean, they're coming and looking. That's true. Checking out stuff. They don't use the same encryption, huh? So you got to fake them out.

Have you ever thought about that? No, I haven't. I actually never was concerned about my data in Onyx until just now. Them guys are not leaving your Onyx pins alone. I wasn't concerned to tell just now. I'd be concerned. If they want to come and try and hunt where I am, they're welcome to. They want 160, 170 bucks. Yeah. Well, good luck. Is there nothing out there? I seriously, my bow's in a case. I haven't gotten it out. Wow. I'm going to try really hard during the archery season to find something to hunt, but I do not know. Wow. Seriously. It's hard to admit, honestly. Dude. That's hard. Yeah. It's rough, but it's going to be all right. We always find something. We need to move by you fast here. Cheer us up a little bit, Cash. What do you want to hear? Something good. Something better than Logan had to say.

Well, I mean, there's still some good-looking elk on the landscape and stuff, but it's a weird year. It's a weird year. Truck hems were weird. I will say that. As far as all the... The fires or what? What's making it weird? I don't know. I think the drought and feed and everything. Yeah. Just kind of all of it. I mean, I had bulls that were over a month late. Things that didn't grow that should. Things that did grow that shouldn't have. Just kind of wonky. Weird year that way. Do you think it's excessively big? I don't know. That's what the people want. I plead the fifth. I respectfully decline to answer the question under the fifth amendment right that I have. No. Under the advice of counsel. You only got a hundred advice of counsel. Is your shirt red? Spent some time recently and starting to explore stuff and learn and everything. It's good. What? You got anything to add to what Cash is saying? No. I think there's definitely going to be some highlights and then some pretty lowlights. Lowlights too I guess is what you'd call them. Some areas are looking pretty bleak, dark and gloomy and other areas of the state or the western state seem to be okay. Of course this is from a very discriminating trophy hunter perspective. You know what I mean? Yeah.

I mean in general there's plenty out there for everybody. Oh yeah. Not too picky but this would be from, you know, we're wanting. Quality. It's not a 2019. Or 16. Or 15. Or 17. Or 2005. 1995. Okay. You weren't even a. I wasn't even a thought. You weren't even a concept. Not in 95. 2005 though. Cash was on paper. That's about it. Cash wasn't even on paper.

Back in 1985 I remember chasing big bucks. Your parents hadn't even dated by then, right? Had they? Oh yeah. I'm the youngest. Oh. Yeah. When did they get married? That's a good question. I don't know. It would have been like 1925. I don't know. I saw something the other day. Speaking of that, 1920. But Carter, you're born in about 73 or 4 or 5 about like me, right? Somewhere near. Close or minus. So the amount of time from 1973 to 2026 is what? 53 years? Right? No, I'm just doing. Just follow me. I'm following. I know where you're going with this. I do too. That 1973 to now is the same amount of time as 1920 to 1973. Wow. Jeez. I had to call my wife and tell her, I love you. I might be dying today. I don't know. It felt bad. Did you sign up for another colonoscopy? Because it's time, Bronson. It's time. I don't know, but that was sobering to figure that 1920 feels like 200 years ago.

It does. Doesn't it? When you say it out loud. Yeah. 1920 to 1973. It's 53 years before I was born and now we're 53 years after. It does feel. That's wild. You're as old as rockfish right now. Jeez. Old rockfishers, 50 to 70 years old. I'll take your word for it. Who even knows that? Yeah. I don't want to put information. Off the top of your head. I'll go with the big alligator. A big bull alligator versus a rockfish. Yeah, the alligators are disgusting. They're 50 to 70, aren't they, Devin? Yeah. I don't know. We looked it up one time. Oh, alligators? Yeah, alligators. They'd be 100 years old. Oh, yeah. There we go. They're old, old. Anyway. Cash triggered me when he said 1925. I just had to throw that out. It was sobering. That's interesting. That is a little sobering. Yeah. But anyway. Yeah, I guess I'd probably echo.

In general, though, what I've seen on only a couple units in Utah and stuff is the elk are definitely better. Better than the deer. Yep. No question. They perform better. That's not a surprise. We kind of said that. You know?

When I say pretty, we guess that probably would be. Had a lot of good rain right about the time elk were shedding and growing heavy right then. Deer always just don't get going as early as elk do. And these droughts in our country are just hard to beat. Yeah. I mean. Yeah. Per adler growth. Yeah. You just. Not an amazing way. In a bad way. Right? Like, they're just hard to beat. They're beating us. Now we're compounding drought. Compounding drought years into decades. Multiple. Yeah. In a row. Yeah. It's been, it's been like rough. But there is like what Wyatt's saying. I think there's spotty areas that are. Yeah. This area is showing some good promise for, for what we've seen recently. Mm-hmm. You know? Yeah. It's not, still not off the charts. Yep. Yeah. The monsoons have been really good in southern Utah, northern Arizona and places that, I don't

know about Nevada, Nevada too, Jason, from what I've seen or heard. But. Yeah. Lots of. There's parts of, parts of it are decent, pretty decent. There's parts that are pretty rough. There's fish in places that haven't been fished for a while. Oh, dude. There's salamanders coming out. How do, why don't we look that up? How long can a salamander live in a dry pond? And then frogs. Dude. And frogs. And it's loaded with frogs. There's great, great blue herons standing out there in these flash flooding that we had. I have a picture with a frog in their mouth. And I'm like, gee. It's just been laying in the mud for. Oh. Yes. Who knows how long. Underground. Yeah. And so like, but, but then think about the heron. Like, where'd you come from, guy? What are you doing in the desert in Nevada? What are you doing? Yeah. You know what I mean? What place is to fly to? It's out there. Three footer.

Sitting out there. I own this pond. You know? No competition. Yeah, no competition. I don't know what it is. Yeah. Pup coyotes are everywhere. Oh, yeah. Sean and I picking up cameras. We saw six in one day. I had a lot of coyotes. Yeah. Yeah. It was pretty interesting. Sean, it was a good time. Some pups died and some lived. It was a good time. It was a good time. But what do you got for us? That's pretty crazy. That's way longer than I thought it would be. Rockfish? What? No. Or frogs in a dry pond. Sorry, I was chatting frogs and salamanders in a dry pond. Oh. Okay. What'd you find out? So, for the frogs, 10 months underground through severe drought. And then the salamanders are only a few weeks. What? Yeah, the frogs are a long time. Yeah. Wow. Long time. I knew it had to be that because we're seeing it all the time in the desert areas. There shouldn't be a frog alive, period. Mm-hmm.

Don't they slow their heart to like an insane low amount of bees? Crazy. Just stay buried? Yeah. I guess. I don't know. They're basically dead. That's a long time. Jeez. I had a frog out in the desert unit. Like, it was at least half a mile from the closest water. And it was just sitting there. I shot a buck and picked up my arrow. I look in the bushes like five feet away. It was a frog. It's like that big. They call them horny toads. No, it wasn't a horny toad. It was a full-on frog. I'll show you the video of it. I'm going to find it. I'll show you. It's a full-on frog. And it was a half mile from the closest water. That you know. On a top. On a top. Like on a ridge? Yeah, like on a ridge. He's starting his own something. Settlement somewhere else. He got kicked out. They call those. Was it getting dark, dusky at night? It was dark. Was it a Mormon cricket? No.

It was like the size of my palm. They call those lost rocks. Yeah. They call those tarantulas. Tarantulas. Well, so yeah, it's been pretty fun. It's fun. Summertime's fun. It is fun to be done and gathered. I mean, I'm not going to lie. I actually enjoy the trail cam. Yeah, I don't mind. Batteries. Excess batteries. It's nice at some point to be done. The one thing I'm noticing, though, is these trail cams are lasting longer. Like, people have old jank cameras and they're still going. Yeah, because you only run them for 45 days. That's right. Yeah, and they get more used. You run them for three or four months between horses, rain, floods, sun. Unless you're using cell cams, there's not like this new wazoo technology you have to have. No. For a steel cam that's just chilling. You know what I mean? Yeah. Did you notice that, Wyatt? Yeah.

Did you see a few, like, just kind of like the old models? Old style cams, yeah. Yeah. They're working, yeah. 45 days once a year. That's all they've got to perform. Yeah, and then you put them back on the shelf and I have this little routine. Sign me up for that schedule. My locks are in this. I don't want to throw the batteries away. They're probably, like, 80%. I don't throw batteries away. I leave them in there. And then the next year I'll start them off with the used batteries, if it's 60% or higher. Yeah. And then leave them in there. And then your first check. I had that one year, but some of them leak the corrosion stuff. They do. But then the first check, then I clean them out. Ty's been home today. Ty's been home today ripping everyone out and throwing them away. I can't stand the leakage. Yeah, I had. Yeah. Did you see a couple of my batteries? I had her ripping out batteries.

Yeah. And I opened one and it was full of corrosion and I was like, yeah, you ain't doing this one. No, you don't need to do that. Licking your fingers. Vinegar. I soaked it in vinegar and it was fine. Cleaned it right up. I am looking at a frog. What? You're looking at a frog. I'm looking at a frog. I don't know where you're at. Is your location services on in that video? Nope. Nope. That's the black diamond. That's full on frog. Toad or whatever. Is that a black diamond toad? Black spot of toad. Yeah. Definitely parts. Parts of it's not great, and other parts are looking good to decent. Yeah. Yeah. Good. That's how finicky these spring storms were. They didn't even hit the same units uniformly at all.

I've got some options. It's tough to know what to get started on, quite frankly. Well, you have a lot of options then, if you don't know where you're going to start. Maybe Wyoming. Probably start in Wyoming. I got... Utah. Utah Archery. Yeah. I'll be on Utah Archery General. Okay. But, I mean, it's tough, man. Got a buck? It's tough. No. No. These are hard things to talk about. Yeah, they are. Hey, not because you're going to have people follow me around. Go ahead. Come follow me around. It's pretty bleak right now. I learned this the other day. All you have to say is, on the advice of counsel. I do not recall. Huh? On the advice of counsel. Yeah, on the advice of counsel.

I cannot tell you what color the carpet is. Or my sweater. I don't recall. Anyway, no, it's like, there's nothing. It's just more or less. I think, I feel like I'm going to use hunting season. I don't know if you guys do this. A scout. That's what I'm doing. That's what I'm doing. I mean... Like, I'm going to scout. Like, say Wyoming, you can hunt archery with a rifle. I'm going to scout with the archery, kill one with a rifle, maybe. Maybe not. Yeah. Maybe kill one with a boat. Find something. Maybe. Especially since, like, in southern Utah, like we talked about, it started raining, you know, here about the 15th, 21st of July. Yeah. All bets are off. There's water everywhere now. You know? So, on the units that are already a little bit finicky to get stuff on water, because there's a little bit, whether it be running water and things like that, now, yeah, that to it.

Now, you just got to go hunt now and stumble onto something, then. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's that kind of thing. Especially if you've got a dedicated hunter tag, which some of us do. You've got archery now. You've got lots of options. You finally find a deer at the end of archery. Okay. I just barely found him, and now we've got something to hunt. That's what it feels like a little bit. Yeah. You know? That's my attack. Is it? Yeah. Yeah. That's my plan. And then with Colorado, you just go hunting. Yeah. You know what I mean? That's one that's tough to scout for. So, you've got some of those tags that you just go hunting on. Mm-hmm. For the entire family, we, in Colorado, one way or another, you know, early, second, third, fourth. So, there's a lot. There's a lot going on. Yeah. That is a lot. I've got elk tags in three states in our family, which, I don't know how that happens,

but they're not even close states. Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico. How close are those three to each other? Not very. I forgot. I forget about some of that. Yeah. You do. You're going to be putting up some miles. I'm going to rack up some miles. Yeah. Might have some elk meat giveaway on the podcast if something goes right here and there. But we'll see. Unless you guys want it. You guys, at first dibs, of course, but you guys, I'm hearing you guys have lots of options yourselves, so you're probably going to have a lot of meat. You guys are killers. So, anyway, but yeah, it's just.

You've had one in the shop how long? Three weeks? I don't know. It's been a minute. That's what I'm saying. Trail cam week's a hard week. For not even, like, engine problems. No, rebuilding shocks.

Three weeks, man. And they still don't have it. So, I went and got another one.

I was waiting for that. I'm telling you, it's hard. These are hard times. Trail cam week's a hard week. Things change. People get wound up. Wyatt rolls with the punches. He's. Yeah. What? I probably would have hit my satellite feature if I didn't have my inReach. You know. What went through your mind? Like, you could go get those cameras on another day. I was there. I was committed. When do you ever throw in the towel? I wasn't going to. I was going to get those cameras. Come heck or high water. Yeah. I was going to get them. Literally high water. At what point would you throw in the towel and say, I cannot get these cameras? Oh. The advice of council, I cannot get these cameras. I can't drive. I can't. I'm tired of walking. Yeah. I would have to be in mobile at that point. All right. I like it. How was that? Walking around in the middle of the night. You know. It was fine.

It's refreshing. Wild horses. Snoring. Lots of ice. Yeah. And those horses have colts. Oh, yeah. And they get protective of those colts. And they're going to get over there. And there's something sitting in the bushes. And you're like, gosh, there's space kind of far apart. And are you strapped? I hope it's a blue cow. Were you packing them away? I did. I took my pistol with me. Yes, I did.

Be careful what you shoot at. You got to know your target. However many hours. Did you run through a set of batteries and a headlamp? No. No. Did you use the Epic headlamp? No. Just a little LED lamp I had. It was actually that. It's out there with a lantern. Yeah. Knocking around. Pumping it up. White gas. All right, you guys. This is so, so retarded right now. We went from salamanders and frogs to this. So which one was better? Those were interesting. I was learning things. I still feel like we have to put Devin on the spot. I mean, for what? About what? Where are you starting the year? Yeah. Oh, I'm going to bow hunt. Oh, I love that one. Bow hunt deer. It'll be more so scouting. Utah. Okay. You are? All right. I didn't. Yeah. These are things I didn't know about. It's either that or I go bow hunt and open Wyoming. Did you find a good one?

Why would I do that when a few weeks later I just go up there and see how he's avoiding the question? What? Did you find a good one? It's solid. Yeah. It's solid. Solid year. I kind of feel, I don't know, it's just for me, every year after when I pull them, I'm always like, I could have done so much more. It bugs me. Because it's exciting. Yeah. Checking SDs. And I'm like, man, I kind of wish I would have went a little harder. I've done that. I've walked away. I feel that every single year. And I did it this year. I went to an area and I was like, I want to put a camera up. There are a lot of cameras here. But you have to go back and you know. You have to go back. You have to manage it. We found a few things too late the last 10 days. And you're like, I wish I'd have had a camera here the last month. Yeah, that's what I mean. And now it's raining and there's water every switch.

It doesn't do anything you get to do one for 10 more days. I have a few of those. But hey, add that to next year's list. Oh. It's kind of one thing out there when I was at the broke down truck. So I had a camera hung on some water out there. And the water was, I don't know, 1,000 yards, 1,500 yards from the road. So I mean, it was a little ways in there. And with this broke down truck, I had to walk into it a different way than I had been coming into it kind of deal. I didn't get to take the road up to the higher part and walk down to it. I had to walk all the way up to it. I was walking up to this, up the draw kind of to kind of get to the camera. I find another spring that's not on the map. It's not. Yeah, not on the map. And full of buck tracks. Yeah, and it's covered in deer tracks. And it is 600 yards from my other set. And no road by it. And no road by it.

Is it like on the ground or is it piped? Has it been improved or just on the ground? No, it's just on the ground. It's run down into a. Those are money. Into kind of a. And you did it a little bit early. Did you think about taking a couple of the cameras that were in your pack, put them up. For two days. For two days. He said that's coming back. That's where dedication comes in. No. But. He was getting that. But yeah, that's my point. He was getting out. We found some things like that. And I'm like, dang. Yeah, that's exactly it. I wish I would have found that. I mean, but it's kind of like. It's just like everything you've already learned. You've learned over a lot of years. It carries over. Yeah, you think about what you know in some places. Like it's years of compounding. Well, sometimes you think you know it so well. And then you. Yeah, you get. You get complacent.

I'm going to something in the dark. Here it is. And then all of a sudden you're finding something like that. Like, gosh, I definitely should have had a camera on this. Yeah. Yeah. Next time. You never quit learning, I guess. Yeah. You never quit learning. Well, and that's the one thing about water is it changes every year. It feels like. Yeah. It changes so much. Mostly less of it. Yeah. This year was a lot less of it. To start with. Yeah. Yeah. And then it's interesting. I've got stuff where there's just bees and maybe a wet spot in the dirt. And then. But at night, it'll be enough water. Bubble up. Yeah. It's enough water for deer. You know what I mean? I had a spring like that out there, too, that would bubble up and actually start to run down the hill at night. Just doesn't evaporate. But during the day, it was just nothing. Bacon. Yeah. Kind of crazy. Chat that up.

That's good to say. We tried. Yeah, I don't know. We tried and it never could give us a straight answer of why. It kept on going back to like evaporation and we were like, there's no way that it's all that. It's got to be the rotation of the earth, you know. The moon. The tides. The magnetic pole. I mean, there's got to be a lot to it.

High tide. High tide. High tide in the desert. Yeah. So, anyway, there's also tags out there for the world. Like, you know, we're going to start having these turn back tags from Colorado. Yeah. Things like that. Idaho. Idaho in the coming days. Second draw. Colorado Weekly. Nevada. If you've got the patience to watch that. I mean, Nevada residents. I saw a cow tag come out. Did you? Yeah. You've been watching that, Jason? I mean, you're stupid if you don't. Really? No. No. Let's put it this way. Were you logged in as you or one of your kids? What else are you going to do when you travel across the country? Were you logged in as you or one of your kids? Of course. Who? You? Of course. Oh, wow. What were you hoping to grab? I don't know because I thought about it a lot. Because we're in the 14-day window of deer. Let's say an archery. Yeah. Of archery. And do you really want that?

Be careful what you wish for. It's a free time. It was more or less to throw up my cart and get in a seven-day jail. I didn't worry about it anymore. That's what I figured was going to happen. I know what guy that happened to you. I got out of seven-day jail today at 1030. Did you? Yeah. And that tag sat there for like three hours. Yeah. It was almost the rest of the day. No one wanted it. Some people want cow tags. Some don't. It was a buck tag. Archery deer. I remember. It's not good. And it's actually a pretty good tag. Yeah. When I heard that you let it go, I was a little disappointed. I don't know. That's why I didn't call you. Because you'd have convinced me to take it. That's a great tag. You got two and a half days to run cameras. Yeah. Exactly.

Anyway. Yeah. Well, there are some options. Plus, there's options. Devin, if you're, you know, you might talk about that again. There's, obviously, they're not just over the counter or general and all that, but they're landowners slash outfitted hunts. Maybe more than in recent years, per se, you know, elk especially. Yeah. I agree. It feels like there's a lot available out there. Every day. Right. Several units in New Mexico. I mean, a couple OTC, even Utah private ranch tags. Yeah. Some really good stuff. Like, and these, a lot of these guys have trail cameras. Like, they're like, they're some good bulls. Great. And bucks. You guys have been posting up bucks up in northern Utah. For a month out, it's now or never kind of thing. Like, yeah, there's pretty awesome good stuff out there. Yeah. So, reach out to Devin or some of us here.

And if you're looking at that option, guided option, a lot of those are that way since they're private land. Yeah. Tied to private or they include a landowner tag and there's some as guided package. But, yeah, we got 30 days or less than some of these New Mexico lands that are going. Yeah. Yeah. Give us a call. Pretty awesome. We're also selling optics like crazy. And so, if there's anything to watch when you're needing optics, it's that because stuff that you wouldn't expect goes on there. But a lot of other things that we have are just regular member price, which is cheap, cheaper than anything out in the big wide world. So, anyway, definitely, of course. That's where I think this SIG having the, you know, when you look in there, it doesn't say profile one or two. It actually says. The gun. However you type it in. Red Rock. T.S. Customs. Fierce. Whatever it is. And the caliber. Yeah, exactly. Remington. Whatever it is. That's a good upgrade from the new generation versus the first one. Yeah. That actually brings up a thing for me. When we did that. What was that thing we did? The archery challenge. Oh. Pack. Yeah. We had multiple range finders for archery ranges. Oh, it was bad. And we had deviations of like five yards. We did two. Between brands. Yeah. Blew my mind. I mean, so I guess, like sometimes I'd go to the range with my little old hand. I had a little one that I'd use and just range stuff and shoot. But then in my binoculars, there was like a three yard difference. It happens. You should use the same range finder.

Use the same range finder. Always the same. Always. Whatever you're doing. And Randy Ulmer's talked a lot about that on archery. And they'll be, you know, if you're shooting, let's just say it targets 100 yards. One or two or three yards is a huge difference in drop. Oh, yeah. And he had this whole theory and which ones were the best and most consistent and all the things. I wish I, I mean, I'm butchering it. But the idea is valid. What you're saying is true. Yeah. I just figure if I shoot my bow only with that range finder, I'll be good. Because it's signed to that. Whatever that one says. But I was with my brother and his friend and they both were three yards. Like we're talking 80, 90 yards on 3Ds. And I'm like, well, if you're getting 94. So I go off of theirs and I was, I was hitting. No, I went off of mine and I was good.

And then after a while, they're like, dude, you're, you're way off. So I started to go off of theirs and I'm hitting low. So it's just, yeah, it was something to think about. Can't let people touch your gear or sway you. Let them get in my head. That's something to think about. Like you get, I mean, if you're booking a hunt or something, that's something to compare to. Like you're going to shoot your own range finder at home and stuff. But you get with a guide. Maybe the guide's ranging for you. Check them out. Some of these range finders are. They're built for meters, even though they can put them in yards. But then they do the conversion and it's different. There's a variation. It's like calculation or something. I mean, four yards at 80 yards is a big deal. That's a big deal. That's hitting or missing. Yeah, it's a big deal. Yeah.

Shouldn't be shooting past 30 at anything with a heartbeat. It's true. Except for coyotes. Except for coyotes. These are foam things like cheetahs and whatnot. Warthogs. Turkeys.

Sasquatch. Rock chiles. I shot that thing in a freaking rainstorm. I could barely see him out there. How far is that, 110? 111. Well, according to my range finder. Yeah, I hit him right. Lower regions. Did you? Nether region or lower? I hit a little low. There was a lot of rain, though. Anyways. Probably affected aeroplight. Oh, yeah. A few deadlines still coming up. We got Wyoming, Montana, Oregon points. So you can still buy those. They're all still open. Point periods. Point periods are open. That's great. Feels like a broken record. But just remember if you did Wyoming, deer, elk, and antelope, they didn't give you a point after you were unsuccessful. If you applied for it, it's the only state that does it that way. Don't forget to go buy them. You've got to go back in. I think on these Colorado tags, what were you saying, Cash,

that there was 54 Gunnison elk that had now made some new SKUs? Yeah, some of the new SKUs that were over the counter, second and third rifle, like 54, 55. There's tags on the leftover list still. You know, so there's not those that are there. Do you find it interesting? What does that tell you about the quotas that they set for? Well, I mean, aggressive quotas. They want to sell tags. Aggressive is one word for it. Yeah. But do you find it interesting, like, anybody that says the draw doesn't work and you can't have enough tags, and the tags are, like, if you want to go hunting, is there not just a load of opportunities? I talked about it. Yeah, you did. I got a little. Is it out on the, it's out, isn't it? Yeah, I think that one's out. You talked about it. Yeah, a few episodes ago. Yeah, a few episodes ago. On this opportunity tags in the August, September issue. That's what I meant.

Well, yeah, and then on the podcast, when we're talking about extended archery stuff and people complaining. Yeah, do you have any feedback? I have, yeah. I have not gotten my stripped tag. I've never got, yeah, I've never got a tag. No. Yeah, there's opportunity out there. Like, there are a couple of those tags that are on the leftover list.
