00:00:02:14 –> 00:00:07:26
I am in Southern Nevada archery hunting on the 10th. I’ve high centered the truck a couple times.

00:00:08:06 –> 00:00:10:06
It’s one of, it’s a tough year actually. And

00:00:10:14 –> 00:00:12:18
You know, I’m just hoping for Giant Bull,

00:00:13:03 –> 00:00:14:11
Anything to do with Western Big Games.

00:00:17:22 –> 00:00:18:06
Welcome

00:00:18:06 –> 00:00:21:09
To the Epic Outdoors Podcast, powered by Under Armour.

00:00:22:01 –> 00:01:11:11
Hey, how we all doing out there today? It is Jason Carter, Adam Bronson, Chris Peterson, Jeffrey John and John Peterson and my ex-brother-in-law. So anyway, we’re, we’re all jammed here in the studio today. We wanted to kind of visit with everybody before we do. I wanna thank Under Armour for sponsoring all these Epic Outdoors podcasts and some of the different things we do. We’ve got a great partnership with them, as well as multiple other partners with the magazine and, and a lot of other things that we’re doing. So anyway, appreciate them. This particular episode’s pretty exciting. We’re gonna give away some gear for the first time. We’re gonna do it pretty much every episode. Of course, I don’t wanna be held to it, but maybe 95% of the time we’ll give away some stuff. But this is pretty awesome. So anyway, this particular episode, we’re gonna give away a pair of Fat tire boots.

00:01:11:11 –> 00:02:01:00
They’re made by Under Armour, super appreciative of them. Of course, they sponsor these podcasts. And anyway, as these go along, we’re gonna give away other things too, other than Under Armour. But, but to kick it off, we’re gonna give away a pair of fat tire boots. These are Gore-Tex boots. They’re like walking on pillows. I love them. Early season. They’re amazing. Adam and I both use them heavily. And anyway, they’re pair of $200 boots or a hundred ninety nine ninety nine on their website. Or you can just enter to win and get ’em free. So this particular episode, I’m gonna explain it to enter to Win, you go to epic outdoors.com/podcast. And then on the right hand side, there’s a podcast code. Let’s enter Fat Tire, no spaces, just put F A T T I R E. No spaces capitalized or not. Doesn’t matter. Put your name, your email, and your phone number.

00:02:01:07 –> 00:02:57:03
Hit submit. Be one entry per person, and we’re gonna give ’em away here in a week. So anyway, we’re super excited. It’s kind of fun. Give away some legit gear. We’re gonna do Epic Outdoors memberships and phone scopes and all kinds of different things that’s coming out. So a little bit of epic swag here and there. But this particular one, we’re gonna do a UA Fat Tire boot and a lot more to come. So anyway, again, epic outdoors.com/podcast. Go to the podcast code, enter Fat Tire, your name, email, phone number. Hit submit. Anyway, but that’s how you do it. Epic outdoors.com. And then of course you can see all kinds of different things. You can buy some swag on our website or whatever. Learn a little bit more, more about our services. So anyway, appreciate all your loyal listeners out there. Hardcore Western big game hunters. A little something, something for this particular episode. Here we

00:02:57:03 –> 00:03:01:17
Are, August 1st today. What does August mean to you? When you hear the words? August, Jason

00:03:02:25 –> 00:03:09:00
Archery, deer hunting. Hey, well first, first Jen and i’s anniversary

00:03:09:17 –> 00:03:14:01
Tomorrow. Ooh, that was a safe, safe cover up right there. It

00:03:14:09 –> 00:03:14:16
Zip.

00:03:14:18 –> 00:03:26:08
Literally today. Oh, tomorrow. Tomorrow. Well, you did that about a week early enough, because as we all know, Nevada is the 10th. Yes. Yes. So you have a week of festivities. Yes.

00:03:26:15 –> 00:03:26:25
So when

00:03:26:29 –> 00:03:29:11
We, and then you’re gone for about four months to

00:03:30:01 –> 00:03:43:17
No, I know. I had to take her out to dinner for the next four or five nights. Make up for that. Well, good. Yeah, we got married and took off on a DOL sheep hunt. So 1996, how long ago was that?

00:03:43:17 –> 00:03:45:29
So, hold on. You took off or We took off.

00:03:47:18 –> 00:03:48:17
Yeah, I took off.

00:03:48:28 –> 00:03:59:17
That’s what I thought. I thought it, that’s what I thought. That’s what I thought. I just, we didn’t want to too much. We just wanted to be transparent here and know what you meant by we or I.

00:03:59:17 –> 00:04:04:26
We’re gonna flush some things out on this podcast. We’re gonna get right down to the nitty gritty, it sounds like. So yeah,

00:04:04:27 –> 00:04:14:06
We’re all about ready to hit the hills, and we figured it’d be a good time to just get together and go through our schedules and yeah, whatever else. See where this goes today. Drink

00:04:14:08 –> 00:04:18:07
A few monsters. Looks like Jeff’s got a, no, it’s not good for you, Jeff.

00:04:19:15 –> 00:04:21:20
I’m sure it’s, they run hot rock cars on that stuff.

00:04:23:08 –> 00:04:51:19
There’s no question. It ain’t good for you. I mean, I’m not your mom or anything, but don’t do what I do. All right. Anyway. Yeah. August tenth’s coming up. So I know we’ve been hitting the hills really hard. Janet thinks it’s been hunting season since basically June 15th. And it does feel that way. So anyway, we’ve all got a ton of tags. I just kinda wanna flush that out a little bit and see Jeff, maybe start with you like, how’s your scouting going, Jeffrey?

00:04:54:05 –> 00:05:12:13
Of course, of course. So yeah, I’m in Southern Nevada archery hunting on the 10th. It’s looking rough. There is a possibility of turning the tag back in right now. ’cause there’s just, I haven’t been able to pull anything up that I really wanna chase. Yeah.

00:05:12:20 –> 00:05:17:18
But you know, you just don’t have any points. So it’s like, at some point, what’s the use? You’re saving, you’re gonna gain a point.

00:05:17:28 –> 00:05:28:08
Yep. And so I’ve, I’ve had Nevada tags the last two years, and so this is like third year in a row as a non-resident. Kind of lucky. Yeah. But I really don’t know if I wanna keep it.

00:05:29:09 –> 00:05:31:18
Also, my dad, he’s taking tags. Nobody wants,

00:05:32:02 –> 00:05:33:12
I know. That’s, so,

00:05:34:11 –> 00:05:37:20
Don’t want to make it seem like he is the draw expert.

00:05:38:19 –> 00:05:39:12
No, no, no.

00:05:39:25 –> 00:05:40:17
That’s, that’s

00:05:40:17 –> 00:05:41:24
Definitely true. Like they are,

00:05:42:11 –> 00:05:47:05
He’s drawn tags. I mean, people don’t apply for That’s right. Okay.

00:05:47:20 –> 00:05:57:00
Not actually, you know, when I was looking at the odds, not a single person applied first choice for the tag I got. So not, not one. Not one.

00:05:57:14 –> 00:06:09:28
You know what’s funny is he comes back and he’s like, there’s no truck cameras out there. No there’s not. No, there’s not. Because you’re gonna get burrows. You’re gonna get wild cattle. Cattle, quail

00:06:09:29 –> 00:06:14:24
Water holes, you know, the bird hunting probably is really good. The deer hunting not so great.

00:06:15:14 –> 00:06:21:01
If you’re interested in looking for desert tortoise and stuff like that, you’re probably gonna have a good hunt. Yeah.

00:06:21:03 –> 00:06:24:01
You know, call me, we can, we can put together a hunt on that one.

00:06:24:10 –> 00:06:26:26
So how, what have you been seeing? A few stags, a couple of,

00:06:27:10 –> 00:06:45:05
Yeah, we’ve, it is a few, A lot of goofy deer. An amazing amount of three points. You know, I mean, 22 inch, three point tall, no eye guards. I mean, just garbage. Just nothing good. That really, you know, that I’m really excited about at all

00:06:45:16 –> 00:06:55:23
S I thought it was pretty funny, Adam Jaw, when we were sitting in the office yesterday and flipping through some trail camera pictures. And here’s a 24 inch, not deep forked buck. And just

00:06:55:23 –> 00:06:56:29
Like one of Jason’s

00:06:57:29 –> 00:06:59:13
That would be die in my unit.

00:07:00:17 –> 00:07:03:06
That’s one of Jason’s one 60. So

00:07:03:06 –> 00:07:03:11
True.

00:07:03:11 –> 00:07:08:06
That’s so true’s one. We’re flipping through pictures as fast as we can flip through ’em. And Jeff’s like, whoa, whoa. Stop, stop,

00:07:08:06 –> 00:07:09:12
Stop, stop. Whoa, whoa. Go back.

00:07:10:04 –> 00:07:12:12
How close is that to Mesquite?

00:07:14:09 –> 00:07:31:07
Well, there’s been a couple times. I know you, we were wondering if you’re gonna make it back to the office. ’cause these monsoons have hit, it’s been 118. Yeah. And then all of a sudden the monsoons started hitting hundred 18 and you can get washed into Lake Mead in a hurry. And in one of those floods. So kind of dicey.

00:07:31:17 –> 00:07:50:01
Yeah. And the couple trips I’ve spent down there, I’ve high centered the truck a couple times. Had to jack it up with the jack and put rocks under the tires to get over the, over the boulders. And then on the last trip, I was heading out at about midnight and was driving through a crick out in the desert on the road,

00:07:50:17 –> 00:07:51:24
Driving one 10 degrees.

00:07:52:01 –> 00:07:58:26
Well, driving through the water, like just ’cause it flash, floods hit. And it was coming down and I was getting outta there. So it was looking

00:07:58:27 –> 00:08:11:17
For a place to set a truck camera on water, driving through, driving through a crick, driving. That’s my brother-in-law. Everybody right there. That’s my brother-in-law. Neil. They’re extra. That’s

00:08:11:17 –> 00:08:12:12
Right. Yeah. Oh

00:08:12:14 –> 00:08:18:02
Man. It’s tough. Well, right on. Well, you’re not gonna turn it back, are you? We’re gonna make you grind this one out.

00:08:18:25 –> 00:08:19:18
I don’t know. I probably, you’re gonna

00:08:19:20 –> 00:08:21:11
Kill a deer where man has never killed a deer.

00:08:21:26 –> 00:08:38:01
I tell you, that’s about what it feels like. I mean, there’s, there’s no pressure. I haven’t seen a single, not another human out there, actually, the whole time I’ve been scouting no trail cameras. I mean, it’s pretty, it’s pretty wide open. You just gotta have a deer to hunt though. Yeah. So, yeah.

00:08:38:19 –> 00:09:07:05
Well you’ve been trying to, of course, we, we’ve got you hired here at Epic. You’re not going anywhere. But you’ve also been trying to get your family here in Cedar. And so you’ve been doing a hundred different things and Oh yeah. And wearing a hundred different hats. And Adam and I and John aren’t gonna let you slack off here at the office. So pretty much when we’re scouting you can’t be. So, anyway. Well, yeah, you’ve been doing a lot of different things. And so, well that brings us to Christopher. Christopher Peterson. What’s

00:09:07:05 –> 00:09:07:10
Up?

00:09:08:08 –> 00:09:09:13
What’s up fella? We’re

00:09:09:13 –> 00:09:17:00
Big on the formalities today. Carter, Jeffrey. Christopher. I mean, Jesus. Everybody’s in trouble today or something.

00:09:17:13 –> 00:09:19:01
No, nobody’s in trouble. Okay. I’m

00:09:19:01 –> 00:09:21:11
Just over here in the corner working recording stuff, you know?

00:09:21:21 –> 00:09:25:25
Yeah. What do you got coming up, Chris? You got our tree deer, don’t you? Dedicated hunter

00:09:26:12 –> 00:09:30:10
Scouting. Oh, I’ve been going on a lot of horse rides,

00:09:32:15 –> 00:09:33:07
Chris. Okay.

00:09:33:11 –> 00:09:41:14
Chris is a man of many talents. You know, you never know what you’re gonna get. Are you gonna get the singer Chris? You’re gonna get the artist. Chris, you’re gonna get the recorder. Chris

00:09:41:25 –> 00:09:43:04
Or the Casanova? Chris?

00:09:43:10 –> 00:09:44:07
The ca. Oh yeah,

00:09:45:01 –> 00:09:45:10
He’s

00:09:45:10 –> 00:09:49:23
The, you go. Oh geez. Oh, he’s the one we rely on for all the fun stories

00:09:51:23 –> 00:09:53:08
I should’ve known. This is a bad idea.

00:09:54:27 –> 00:09:55:06
Well,

00:09:56:08 –> 00:10:04:29
Hey, he keeps it light in the office. Pretty sad when we’re all on pins and needles waiting for him to walk in the front door. What happened last night?

00:10:06:11 –> 00:10:06:24
That’s

00:10:06:24 –> 00:10:08:00
Really not that exciting.

00:10:10:19 –> 00:10:15:25
Oh, shoot. So yeah, Chris, he’s got tons. He’s, he’s got tons of of talents. You got some, you

00:10:15:25 –> 00:10:20:20
Got some good tags though. Chris, starting off, I guess. Dedicated Archer deer. You got a deer you’re gonna go after.

00:10:21:10 –> 00:10:40:01
I thought I did. That’s why I say I’ve been out riding my horse. I, I had a good deer. I actually had two good deer. And they, I have not turned them up this year yet. So they did, they did show up a little late last year, but I’m still kind of waiting on ’em. Well, didn’t help that. Half my cards didn’t work either on my cameras and

00:10:41:20 –> 00:10:43:07
No bucks. No other bucks.

00:10:43:13 –> 00:10:51:24
I mean, there’s a bunch of like little, they, they might be good on Jeff’s unit in Nevada. Yeah, just,

00:10:52:08 –> 00:10:54:22
We’re just calling Jeff bucks. There you go.

00:10:55:02 –> 00:11:06:01
Be careful. They not good enough. A general Jeff will be shooting one and then hauling it down there and be like, well that’s a half built buck. It’s doesn’t come from there. That thing’s got four points on isn, both sides.

00:11:06:01 –> 00:11:08:05
It’s, it’s normal. It didn’t come from where I’m hunting.

00:11:08:29 –> 00:11:11:05
That’s got a four point frame as a two year old. Yeah.

00:11:11:16 –> 00:11:13:22
It’ss. My guard’s two and a half inches. It didn’t come from there.

00:11:15:17 –> 00:11:16:17
Did not come from the desert.

00:11:17:05 –> 00:11:22:01
Who else is something or deer on the opener? Archery. Not I, so I am

00:11:22:01 –> 00:11:23:06
Too. I’ve got a tag.

00:11:23:17 –> 00:11:24:22
Strong. Dedicated.

00:11:24:22 –> 00:11:25:14
Dedicated. You’ve been

00:11:25:17 –> 00:11:30:12
Out. Yeah. Does your dedicated And last year I didn’t draw. I had to have a point to

00:11:31:02 –> 00:11:31:11
Does

00:11:31:11 –> 00:11:31:14
Your boys

00:11:31:14 –> 00:11:36:05
Go talk at Utah General? Yep. Utah General. Yeah. My boys’ got one too. So does he? Yep. Cool. That’s

00:11:36:05 –> 00:11:39:29
Awesome. Well, you guys have, you guys have been scouting out some big deals. Yeah, it’s, it’s

00:11:39:29 –> 00:11:49:10
Nice to have something close to home as well. It’s, it’s nice to live in the west, you know, southern Utah, kind of central to all these states and so that, it makes it nice.

00:11:49:18 –> 00:11:53:17
Yeah. That’s awesome. Well, good. What have you been seeing out there?

00:11:56:15 –> 00:11:57:22
Nothing. Nothing?

00:11:58:20 –> 00:12:01:13
Nothing he wants to say on live podcast. Jason, have

00:12:01:13 –> 00:12:03:17
You ever heard of, oh really? Are we keeping

00:12:03:17 –> 00:12:06:05
Secret? No, I’m just, I’m just trying to reach between the lines.

00:12:06:08 –> 00:12:07:07
Don’t you? Keeping secrets

00:12:07:07 –> 00:12:13:18
Before we’re all, we’re all saying, all right, what are we gonna say? This is before the season.

00:12:15:14 –> 00:12:16:12
Oh no, we’re

00:12:16:12 –> 00:12:16:22
Not giving a lot.

00:12:16:23 –> 00:12:23:26
You’re asking him to call. It’s kind of like calling a shot from half court. You’re kind of asking, John, tell me what you’re gonna kill opening day.

00:12:24:26 –> 00:12:26:05
Well, how’s he built? Hey,

00:12:26:07 –> 00:12:28:17
What’s he score? How wide is he? Hey,

00:12:28:27 –> 00:12:33:22
Just wondering what the goals are and then what you’re doing to achieve those goals. You gotta have an action plan, John.

00:12:35:01 –> 00:12:36:25
There’s no action plan. All right, well

00:12:36:25 –> 00:12:39:08
You need to hire an outfitter. Have you ever heard of Bronson outfitting? Yeah,

00:12:39:12 –> 00:12:39:22
I have.

00:12:41:07 –> 00:12:41:20
I’m booked.

00:12:42:27 –> 00:12:44:02
You don’t wanna do a general one?

00:12:44:22 –> 00:12:45:02
Sorry.

00:12:45:22 –> 00:12:53:17
You any sub guys that need work? Speaking of sub guides, speaking of sub guides, who’s your newest sub guide Jeffrey?

00:12:54:07 –> 00:12:56:29
Sounds like it. John. That’s right. Glad to have him

00:12:56:29 –> 00:12:59:01
On board. Right on. Welcome Jeff.

00:12:59:11 –> 00:13:05:01
Yeah. Who’s this? Assuming he passes the test, which he probably will. I mean he’s, well,

00:13:05:01 –> 00:13:11:13
He’s talent got nothing to do out there in 118 degrees. But read some books and maybe the proclamation. Jeff, you got a proclamation.

00:13:12:05 –> 00:13:15:10
Yeah. In many states. Yeah. Covered that way.

00:13:15:29 –> 00:13:16:07
Good.

00:13:16:19 –> 00:13:16:28
Well,

00:13:17:05 –> 00:13:19:02
There you go, John. See what you can work out.

00:13:19:15 –> 00:13:46:22
So John, for those of you don’t know, John basically is responsible for the publishing of Epic Outdoors Magazine and does a great job at it. Of course, he wears many different hats. A lot of the member draw experience, a lot of that kind of stuff. Databases, he just manages a lot of the back backend stuff that we don’t, you know, a lot of people don’t see. And so does a fantastic job at it. Speaking of which, John, you just sent a magazine to the printer?

00:13:46:26 –> 00:13:53:28
Yeah, we did. Just, just barely. August, September. Yeah. Got another one down. Should be receiving it soon. That’s awesome.

00:13:54:07 –> 00:13:54:23
EAG online.

00:13:55:00 –> 00:13:56:04
E mags online. Yep.

00:13:56:19 –> 00:14:14:26
Good. And yeah, and for the membership, just for guys that don’t owe them for the e mags free. So you got the membership, of course you get the paper magazine, then the online version, which comes out right as soon as basically, as soon as it goes to the printer. So you get a little bit of a jump on that and helps, especially during the draw type time of year. When

00:14:15:10 –> 00:14:27:28
Speaking of that, I gotta do a plug. You guys gotta take a camera besides your cell phone out there. Oh, pic pictures that, that we’re getting back now are just not as good as they were even five years ago.

00:14:28:01 –> 00:14:29:01
More people using their

00:14:29:01 –> 00:14:30:10
Phones. People are relying on their cell phones

00:14:30:17 –> 00:14:31:14
Not taking a real camera.

00:14:31:17 –> 00:14:42:13
Huh. And if you look like the lens size, you know, your, your lens size on your camera is the size of an eraser, you know, compared to even a, even a cheap, you know, a hundred dollars, $150 I thought

00:14:42:13 –> 00:14:45:04
Did a great job. This is

00:14:45:04 –> 00:14:59:18
For you, Jason, Instagram. Those Instagram filters that make them look great. Well, for Instagram, you know, you only need the picture to be as big as your phone. Oh. But for print or anything else, you ever wanna blow one up? Yeah. You’ll see the difference. All right. Clarity’s just

00:14:59:18 –> 00:15:05:18
Not there. Well, I guess, I guess let’s just talk about that. Like, do you know what kind of camera you are promoting or telling people?

00:15:05:25 –> 00:15:55:06
Box? Well, you know, anything, I, I would take two. I’d take your cell phone as a backup, take pictures with your cell phone and your regular camera. But basically it’s kinda like Ford, Chevy Dodge. If you buy an Nikon, a Cannon or a Sony, you’re pretty much safe. Yeah. You know, anything that’s the point. Shooter. Yeah. In the last five years, even the lower end, you know, if you look at, just look at the lens, you know, they’re at least an inch wide. You can see the difference between a pencil and an inch wide lens. It’s just letting that much more light in. So anything that your, your phone is doing to make the pictures better is usually digital. Usually takes away from the quality of the, of the photo. So when you expand it, yeah, just, I mean, for a hundred bucks, throw in a, you know, a a point shoot camera. Are that all they’re Yeah. A hundred, 150. You throw ’em all in and they’re tiny.

00:15:55:15 –> 00:16:00:02
I’ve got like five that’s, they are, I’ve got like five of ’em. I ain’t the cheapest one only pays like two 50. Oh, I,

00:16:00:07 –> 00:16:02:07
I mean, you can get a good one for 200. It’s like every

00:16:02:07 –> 00:16:04:14
Two years you gotta buy a new one. ’cause they’re outdated.

00:16:05:04 –> 00:16:17:04
All right, well, you know, I could see, we could have an epic gear store start selling cameras. You know, if you buy a camera from us, you’re gonna get a cover cover shop. You know what I mean? Maybe. No, we can arrange that. No. All right. I have to

00:16:17:04 –> 00:16:18:17
Come up with a few more covers. All right.

00:16:18:19 –> 00:16:25:25
All right. Well that’s enough. Talking about boring stuff, pictures and stuff. Let’s talk about more hunting. Adam,

00:16:26:16 –> 00:16:34:14
I think we skipped Nevada muzzle. Good luck. I’d like to, I’d like to hear about your plans over there. Jason, look, I think we,

00:16:34:26 –> 00:16:35:26
Who’s the host here? Adam,

00:16:36:12 –> 00:16:42:29
Just, we’re here, we’re a crew right here. So it’s just kind of going around. Whoever talks far, let’s have a vote.

00:16:43:26 –> 00:16:44:00
I

00:16:44:00 –> 00:16:52:00
Wanna hear about Jason’s, Nevada. Yeah, there you go. Let’s crush, crush. Let’s crush Nevada. It’s terrible. It’s, from what I’m hearing, it’s never been better over there.

00:16:52:07 –> 00:17:01:07
No, that’s not right. That’s not true. Really. I thought it might be pretty good this year. And, and then there’s a good deer too out there. But it’s one of, it’s a tough year actually.

00:17:01:16 –> 00:17:05:20
Not like 2016, which was arguably the best year in 20 years.

00:17:05:20 –> 00:17:32:17
Yeah. Yeah. Between 2016, 2011. I mean, those are years that were just pretty bandish, so to speak. But anyway, yeah, it’s a little bit tough out there. Been out there, you know, running it hard, hard, hard and, and a lot of different units. So anyway, there’s some good deer. It’s just not the same. But I did draw a muzzle lit tag out there in a, in a kind of one of those Jeffrey units. Yeah,

00:17:32:17 –> 00:17:34:24
I was gonna say that. Well, that tag. There you go. Rivals.

00:17:35:04 –> 00:17:37:07
Rivals, jet. Yeah, that rivals

00:17:37:07 –> 00:17:37:17
Jet. But I

00:17:37:17 –> 00:17:40:28
Got four points that he’s licking his chops over. So I, I do it a

00:17:40:28 –> 00:17:43:25
Little. You have a legitimate, you could get five if you turn it in. But

00:17:43:25 –> 00:17:46:18
Having said that, I’ve worked in a little harder than Jeff is. Oh,

00:17:46:18 –> 00:17:47:05
That’s no doubt.

00:17:47:09 –> 00:17:51:18
We got Jeff in the office, and of course he’s trying to get his

00:17:51:18 –> 00:17:54:14
Family moved down here. They’re here in the new home, and

00:17:55:01 –> 00:18:08:08
Now maybe he can engage. I’m sure he’ll find something good. We’re not gonna let him turn that tag back. But anyway. Are we, Jeff, you’ve already, you’ve already got it sent back. He is sitting in the mailbox

00:18:08:16 –> 00:18:15:11
Or what? Oh man, I don’t know. It, it’s, it’s, it’s sitting in the envelope. No, it hasn’t, hasn’t hasn’t been mailed out yet, but it’s sitting in the envelope. All

00:18:15:11 –> 00:19:09:22
Right. Well anyway, yeah, so it’s, it’s a little rough seeing some deer. You know, the mine’s the same way. I may turn that one back. It’s just forced me to learn that area. It’s the two fifties, you know, of course everybody can see that on hunt nevada.com. But anyway, drew the muzzle tag in the two fifties and never just for basically knowing that I could turn it back and get my points back just forces me to learn a unit that I’ve kind of wanted to learn. And, you know, it’s easy to just ignore it and not get up in the morning, you know, day after day after day and run truck cameras and glass if you don’t have a tag. So by having a tag at least force me to get out there and see what’s out there. And there’s a few good bucks. I, I, you know, I’ve shown you guys a few and there’s a couple there that a guy would, a guy would probably have to shoot. It’s just, it’s four hour drive from our house. And so it’s each way. That’s work. Yeah, it’s work. It’s been work.

00:19:10:03 –> 00:19:17:00
The people in Wisconsin right now are crying for you, Jason, because that’s about 34 hours from their house.

00:19:19:04 –> 00:19:20:19
I’m sorry for you Fellers in

00:19:20:19 –> 00:19:34:29
Wisconsin. Yeah, it’s so far away. It’s four hours from my house. So I just had to say that because these guys that are listening from Florida are like boohoo, Jason. Yeah, exactly. It’s four hours. You can get over there back and kiss your kids, you know,

00:19:35:05 –> 00:19:37:00
At night, sleep at night as well.

00:19:37:10 –> 00:19:56:00
We’re Michigan, you know, you talk to these guys, they, they want to get out here out west hunting, you know, I talk to ’em a lot. We all do. And they’re buying antelope tags out here just to come out and hunt leftover antelope tags in Wyoming. And you’re like, it’s a long ways to come for an antelope buddy. But they just, they just want to get out here. I don’t

00:19:56:00 –> 00:20:09:20
Blame anybody. If you’re back east and you, I mean nothing against white tails. I, they’re fun to hunt. But if that’s more or less all the big game you have other than bears, you’re, you’re begging clawing to get out west for some other opportunity.

00:20:10:07 –> 00:20:17:24
I know, but antelopes do. Is it really worth it? Yeah. Is gotta let it age for four weeks before

00:20:17:24 –> 00:20:20:17
You can touch it and you boil anything long enough it tenders up.

00:20:21:03 –> 00:20:23:18
Yeah, that’s right. Well all so that.

00:20:24:09 –> 00:20:24:19
How’s

00:20:24:19 –> 00:20:25:13
The lion population

00:20:25:17 –> 00:20:25:25
That

00:20:25:25 –> 00:20:25:29
Way?

00:20:25:29 –> 00:20:30:17
Oh my gosh. Even in that crazy desert unit I’ve got, the lions

00:20:30:25 –> 00:20:31:07
Are well in

00:20:31:07 –> 00:20:53:19
Nevada lions. They’re, they’re healthy and happy. Yeah. I’ve got a lion tag and every time I trade trucks I put the tag in the new truck just because I’m convinced I’m gonna see one. I’m convinced and I’m not. But they are loaded up. They’re less, I mean, they are loaded up. We’ve got one, one group of lions mama and some kittens ruining the water. I think

00:20:53:19 –> 00:20:55:06
That’s technically called the pride.

00:20:56:03 –> 00:21:10:07
Pride. The pride of lying, lions ruin a water, kill a deer, you know, 50 yards from the water. And pretty much another deer never, never came back. So anyway, we’re having that kind a place

00:21:10:07 –> 00:21:15:17
Like that on the Henry’s last year we got a pride to five on trail camera. You may remember that picture.

00:21:15:20 –> 00:21:16:01
Oh, I

00:21:16:07 –> 00:21:32:08
Remember it. I don’t know if it’s, I don’t know what it is. I didn’t know they could have four kittens, kittens to adulthood. ’cause they’re all big. But this year there, there’s a void of deer there. Yeah. And I don’t know if there’s no deer. They’re

00:21:32:08 –> 00:21:34:10
Just like sc screaming from, from around. Like, how many deer did you see

00:21:35:02 –> 00:21:54:14
Normally that’s a, that’s a spot that we will go in July, mid-July, early August before kinda gets burned up. You know, it’s kind of south facing and so it can get burned up, you know, cured up feed. But normally we’ll see 30 to as high as 60 bucks in that canyon. Wow. This year we saw three.

00:21:54:26 –> 00:21:57:25
Well, and I know that one night you were like, well let’s go back in the morning.

00:21:57:29 –> 00:22:06:26
Yeah. And I’m like, oh, that was a bad night. Something happened full moon, you know, whatever. Next morning went back and saw one new buck that we didn’t see night before.

00:22:08:09 –> 00:22:09:28
Note to self, like don’t go back and

00:22:09:28 –> 00:22:18:10
Train. And it’s a spot we’ve heard li we’ve glassed them. We’ve got ’em on trail camera. We’ve heard them, we’ve been up glassing. You can hear lines screeching in each other across the canyons.

00:22:18:10 –> 00:22:18:18
Come

00:22:18:18 –> 00:22:52:06
On. Oh yeah, we have. And I don’t know if it’s just they’ve been running rampant. I wanna feel like I wanna blame it on them. Don’t, I Obviously can’t say that with certainty, but I will go back again. But No, and that many line, that much line activity is gonna change some habits. Just like these Nevada areas you’re talking about. If you’ve got three lions work in a water and everything’s keying on that water, ’cause it’s 115 degrees, it’s not gonna take long. They’re vulnerable. Yeah. They’re very vulnerable. Vulnerable. And they’re gonna get chased at some point in the summer and they’re gonna get killed. Or they’re gonna say, I I wanna get outta here.

00:22:52:11 –> 00:23:38:10
Yeah. Even if they know, even know you got their home range and then you got a certain water, you know, and then you got miles between waters. Even if they know there’s a lion there, they still, they still drink there until there’s just guts at the water hole basically. I mean it because they have to, I, I’ve been sitting there setting up trail cameras, pounding a tea post and have a dough walk and water 20 yards from us. Like they have to water. They have to water. Yeah. Had a Turkey do that the other day. I’m sitting there and my daughter’s like, dad, there’s a Turkey. I’m like, oh, she’s so full of it, you know? Anyway. And sure enough, this Turkey comes in and I mean 15 yards from us drinking, drinking a Turkey, you know, and I’m like, I guess a guy could set a blind hair for turkeys. I don’t know, you know? Sounds like

00:23:38:11 –> 00:23:38:19
A good

00:23:38:29 –> 00:24:01:06
Father daughter. Anyway, that’s how Yeah, that’s right. It might happen. But that’s how vulnerable these these animals are, are in some of this desert country. So anyway, it doesn’t take much for a lion. And they, they want to eat too. I have heard, you know, that you think, you think you could just go in and wipe out a lion, you fix your problems. But they’ll, they move in like, it’s like coyotes. You kill ’em. They move in and, and

00:24:02:05 –> 00:24:10:22
Territories. Yeah. And you kill a big tom sometimes it allows the female and all their kittens to live. Yes. ’cause now there’s no regulator, there’s no,

00:24:10:25 –> 00:24:26:16
And some of them may like sheep and some of ’em may have a diet for deer and some may. And just be careful. You think you’re gonna go in and whack one, maybe he’s, maybe he’s eating a lot of small game instead of your deer. You just don’t know. And by killing them doesn’t mean you’re just saving all your deer. But it’s so hard to

00:24:26:16 –> 00:24:32:19
Sure feels good. Just like every coyote’s a dead coyote and every lion’s a good dead lion. It’s what we feel and are trained. It’s,

00:24:32:23 –> 00:24:46:25
It’s so hard to not, to not, you know, go get some warm weather, dry ground dogs and, and take, you know, take charge of it ’cause it’s hard. But anyway. So I know you’ve been avoiding this Adam.

00:24:47:10 –> 00:24:53:17
No, I’ve just been trying to facilitate here. We’ve had a couple lulls, so, but hey, what do you got?

00:24:54:14 –> 00:25:10:22
So, so talk to us about your season. We’ve got, you got, you know, the big tag that’s coming up is this elk tag. At least in my mind. I know you’ve got, you know, a few other options, you know, in and around that. But that’s kind of the big tag that’s at least looming. Yeah,

00:25:10:22 –> 00:25:25:22
That’s my big one for the year. I had 15 points in Arizona kind of been eyeing this year when we knew the archery dates were fall six or so days later into September 15 to 28th of September. Great archery dates. I drew an archery tag unit 27

00:25:26:05 –> 00:25:29:20
In Arizona. Arizona with no moon. It’s this good

00:25:30:05 –> 00:26:03:24
Moon should be good dates. And so, you know, I’m just hoping for giant bull. Just as soon hunt for a big bull or don’t shoot one on hunting like that. Hopefully the ruts gets cranking midway or towards the end of that hunt. Big unit. A lot of semi rugged and even roadless country and you know, other country that’s, you know, more day huntable, things like that. But good elk numbers, borders, New Mexico borders reservations on the, on the west side of it. So just in the, in a good zip code for giant bulls and well,

00:26:03:24 –> 00:26:25:05
And it’s with that burn and everything, it just feels like the stars are aligned for giant bulls in there. We’ve heard of some big bulls, you know, of some big bulls and you know, for all intents and purposes and you know, a lot of residents think that might be the number one unit in the state right now. I don’t, I don’t know that necessarily. It is, but it good enough,

00:26:25:11 –> 00:26:26:22
Good enough for me. Yeah. Good.

00:26:26:27 –> 00:26:27:26
Yeah. Good enough for you.

00:26:28:00 –> 00:26:51:26
Yeah. You know, 15 points with this new non-resident, I, I guess shift they did to the draw to where now not all the non-res quota can go to the max. You’re talking about, you know, 10 tags versus all 20 tags that can go to the max. So it, it lengthened the weight for the, the max point holders it on nine and 10, no question. You know, of course you can’t even draw a 23 north or south. Right. But there being only one tag, it’s gonna go random. It’s

00:26:51:26 –> 00:26:52:20
Gonna go random. Yeah.

00:26:52:27 –> 00:27:00:22
So this is a unit, this a three C unit, one units that I pretty much looked at this year, but I, I settled on 27 figure and well it’s got

00:27:00:22 –> 00:27:06:06
A lot of wilderness escapement, thick trees but burn as well. Great feed like diversity

00:27:06:11 –> 00:27:19:02
Habitat. Figured I could, you know, young enough still to hopefully hike, hike into some of that stuff. Maybe get away from some people if I need to. But hey I’ll, I’ll shoot a three 80 bull if he’s close to a road. I don’t care. You know what I mean? I don’t need to go to if he’s

00:27:19:07 –> 00:27:20:12
A 365 bull.

00:27:21:21 –> 00:27:26:05
Yeah. That went a little bigger initially. Yeah. So I’m gonna hold out for something like that. So

00:27:26:07 –> 00:27:32:10
I just got a big bull question that me and many other people are wondering out there. Like, did you point guard this?

00:27:33:01 –> 00:27:34:16
Oh yeah, I’d do that. But you

00:27:34:16 –> 00:27:35:08
Gonna turn it back? I,

00:27:35:13 –> 00:27:59:25
No, I can’t see any reason that’s gonna happen. I mean too many, the dates are too good. Moon’s too good. And I’ve, I’ve literally looked at this for a couple years. Yeah. Knowing I’d have about the points to draw this year. Also looked at unit 10. Did put that as my first choice. Didn’t think I’d get it. Which I didn’t. So glad to be going 15 years. A lot of long time to wait between elk tags down there. Absolutely. So.

00:28:00:00 –> 00:28:02:04
Absolutely. So you’ve been, I know you’ve been shooting your bow. Yeah,

00:28:02:12 –> 00:28:19:00
I’ve shooting a bun. Feeling good about that. You know, haven’t, haven’t had a, what I’d call a big archery tag the last couple years. Yeah. So we don’t always, you know, we, we all here put in for whatever archery, muzzle or rifle to get the best hunt with the best draws angle h with

00:28:19:00 –> 00:28:19:26
The we have and our schedule,

00:28:20:08 –> 00:28:31:29
You know, don’t, I don’t really, I’m not a, you know, but elk is naturally where we tend to in the states that have archery outcomes, you know, that are great quality. Like Arizona, we tend to favor those hunt. They’re made

00:28:31:29 –> 00:28:37:25
To kill with a bow. You know, other states’ screaming at you but usually a rutt hunt. Yep. You know, so

00:28:37:25 –> 00:28:46:18
Other hunts, other states, you know, I did hunt rifle in Colorado last year just ’cause I had had the points, you know, in no man’s land so to speak. Yeah. New Mexico sometimes. And you

00:28:46:18 –> 00:28:52:01
Killed a great bull in Colorado. Yeah. I mean you killed 360 inch bull Yeah. In Colorado.

00:28:52:06 –> 00:28:53:05
Yeah. It’s a very happy,

00:28:53:19 –> 00:28:58:05
I mean you max the tag out. There’s governor tag, Colorado governor tags shoot for that caliber. Caliber bull

00:28:58:05 –> 00:29:19:13
Sometimes. Yeah. No, I feel very happy. So, you know, yeah. Looking forward to it. Should be hopefully a great hunt. I have pretty much the whole hunt. May have, may take the first few days and and guide some sheep punters here in Utah. It’s the same weekend our desert sheep season opened. We got a bunch of hunters. So may get in on that. Yeah. Frenzy for the first few days. Knock some rams down and then head south to Arizona. So

00:29:19:13 –> 00:29:20:20
I got a question for you Jeff.

00:29:21:22 –> 00:29:22:04
I’m ready.

00:29:22:29 –> 00:29:28:28
I’m ready. Do you got the right meat hauler pack? ’cause Adam’s gonna need a meat haul hauler.

00:29:28:28 –> 00:29:32:14
Adam’s gonna need a meat hauler. Yeah, well I’ll get it. I’ll

00:29:32:14 –> 00:29:43:00
Have it. Okay. Alright. So well you, we’ll give you a company issued one if you don’t have one. So just let us know where to go with that. Maybe we’ll use some, some of your clothing allowance. Epic clothing allowance.

00:29:44:21 –> 00:29:46:11
Do we, do we have an epic clothing allowance?

00:29:46:15 –> 00:29:50:10
Well, that’s new. That’s news to me. Some of us have that. Hey John, how do we make that work?

00:29:51:19 –> 00:29:52:26
Talk to the HR department.

00:29:55:01 –> 00:29:55:07
See

00:29:56:19 –> 00:29:57:26
We gotta hire the HR department

00:29:57:26 –> 00:30:01:10
First, but that’s right. Oh geez. All. Well that’s,

00:30:01:15 –> 00:30:12:00
I’m, I’m wondering have you been hearing anything Adam, on that quality this year in Arizona? Down on your elk stuff? I mean Yeah. Where Nevada’s a little down. How’s, how’s Arizona looking?

00:30:12:12 –> 00:31:20:01
Yeah, you know, from an elk standpoint, especially the moisture, they elk get a much earlier head start growing than deer do generally. You know, they dropped their antlers in March, 1st of March. Yeah. And they start crushing the growth fast. And so, you know, by the 1st of July, or I mean these elk are done, even though they’re stone velvet, they’re, they’re done. And so not hearing anything i, I mean hearing some great stuff. They, they killed the governor bull the other day. It was over four 20 in a different unit, not mine. But I mean, I’m just saying elk, elk, it takes a really severe drought it seems like to, to, to set them back. And I don’t really know, Jason, if the Nevada thing’s drought related. I don’t know why it doesn’t seem like it should be off, you know, but, but it seems like it. But Deere a lot more, they fluctuate more definitely than elk. Elk get going and they grow in four months. They’re done. And so they had a good winter and spring down there. So yeah, antler Grove should not be that compromised. And they’ve had a heavy monsoon season in the last month. So anything that needed to finish off would’ve had what it needed to. So anyway, looking forward to it.

00:31:20:09 –> 00:31:51:13
Yeah. Should be awesome that That’s right. We got a lot of good anti-growth. The, you know, I know like here on the ponson for deer, you know, switching gears to deer of course. ’cause I try to switch gears to deer every time we can. The Ponant looks really good. I’m hearing great things on the Kai. I have great things on the Arizona Strip, not so great things in Nevada from particular people in this room. And, and then, you know, like Southwest, some of our general stuff is just average. You know, I don’t know about Pine Valley, Chris, you’d know about that a little more, but seems

00:31:51:14 –> 00:31:54:22
Seems good. Maybe not quite what it was last year, but it seems good.

00:31:54:25 –> 00:32:07:12
Yeah. Just kind of an odd year. We had a lot, a great winter and then it just turned off dry for two months, you know, for April, may. Just brutal, brutal, dry. Never, never get a storm clear. Days every day and June.

00:32:07:22 –> 00:32:08:26
Brutally hot and dry. Too

00:32:08:27 –> 00:32:25:17
Dry. Defeat out. I mean the, the leaders are on the bitterbrush but it’s just like dried out, brittle. I don’t know what it is. It’s just a, a different year. But anyway, so lots going on. You know, we’ve got, of course Jeff, you’ve got some kids. I got kids,

00:32:27:03 –> 00:32:27:18
Kids got

00:32:27:27 –> 00:32:38:17
In generals in Utah. My kids got more tags than I ever thought of having when I was their age. Oh, absolutely. Colorado, New Mexico, Utah. Your kids, you got Idaho tags. Idaho tags.

00:32:38:25 –> 00:33:38:04
I mean, last year we, my kid had a, last year my kid had a tag in Utah, Idaho, and Colorado. I mean, I think between the two of us, we had seven tags altogether. Of course some of ’em we didn’t hunt ’cause we had other hunts going that we were helping other people on. Brother had a sheep tag. So we, you know, took one for the team. Took one for the team on that one. You know, we just avoided Colorado. ’cause there’s no sense in, you know, going and hunting deer on a, an all reality below average unit, you know, when you could be hunting sheep and Yeah. In Utah that’s so, you know, we focused on that, but it was okay. He was still able to harvest a, a good buck in Utah and Yeah. And as a, you know, as a 12 year old, you know, you kill a four point buck, you know, and you kill a couple of them. Yeah. You’re doing pretty good. You know, so by the time he was 12, he’d killed a couple decent bucks and, and we did a lot of hunting. It was fun. We were able to go with your boys, Jason. Yeah. And it was awesome. Have a fun hunt up there too in Idaho.

00:33:38:09 –> 00:34:00:11
It was awesome. The only thing, what’s what’s killing me about these kids is they’re so, they’re so in tuned to what’s going around, you know, and what we’re doing and what we’ve killed and putting and I mean, all they wanna know, like one isn’t score down, you know, one isn’t like, I’m like really, really? It’s got four points on both sides. Let’s shoot it. Get down on your bipod. Yeah. Right now, you know,

00:34:00:21 –> 00:34:05:14
It was impressive watching, watching Justin get down on that deer last year though. Yeah. A group of bucks.

00:34:05:21 –> 00:34:13:07
Yeah. And watching him, he chose which one he wanted to shoot. Which one are you gonna shoot? The one facing us. And I’m like, okay. We, that’s the

00:34:13:12 –> 00:34:13:24
Toughest angle

00:34:14:02 –> 00:34:15:22
All. Well, it’s a tough one. There’s I know what,

00:34:15:26 –> 00:34:17:02
Seven to nine bucks right there.

00:34:17:07 –> 00:34:29:23
Oh, I know. They were all jammed together. Justin. So he gets down on his bipod and it’s not the biggest deer in the group. It’s not No. You know. No. I’m like, which one are you gonna shoot? He says, the one face and us. And I’m like, oh my gosh. A you know, which

00:34:29:23 –> 00:34:30:17
One? There’s three of them

00:34:30:17 –> 00:34:35:20
Faces. Do you, do you, do you take a Yeah. Do you take a 10 year old kid or, you know. Yeah,

00:34:35:20 –> 00:34:36:25
He’s 10. He was 10, right?

00:34:36:27 –> 00:35:10:20
11. Well, he was 11 was 11. 11. He just turned 11. Do you take an 11 year old kid, pull him off the deer that he’s focused on to shoot one of the other deer. Yeah. And you got deer standing behind deer. You know what I mean? And so you go, I, I got a potential situation here. You know, potential fishing. He’s on the deer face ness. It, it’s definitely a kill shot. Especially with the rifle. He is using the 300 ultra mag, you know, and of course it’s all wazzed out. He’s, he’s got everything’s set up. He’s got a break on, it’s not gonna pound. And he, he knows the gun. I know the gun will just crush the deer. And Yeah, he

00:35:10:20 –> 00:35:13:10
Went out and shot at 700 yards the day before he came

00:35:13:10 –> 00:35:20:22
Up. Yeah. Yep. He did. And so, and he, and he’s just that kind of kid. He’s, he doesn’t get buck fever. He’s very focused. Oh,

00:35:20:22 –> 00:35:21:22
He was ice dude. He,

00:35:22:04 –> 00:35:39:14
I couldn’t believe it. Yeah. And so I’m like, okay, there’s no other deer within by that deer within two feet on each side of this deer. Right. And nothing behind him. And so I’m like, alright, that sounds good. You know? Yeah. It’s not the biggest deer, but it’s kind of isolated enough that I don’t think he’ll kill three or four of ’em.

00:35:39:23 –> 00:35:40:01
Yeah.

00:35:42:14 –> 00:36:03:10
He’s not gonna go to jail with a lacy act violation. Right. Yeah. And so anyway, and so he’s on that deer and he, and he and I just let him do his thing and he touches it off. And I mean, he wasn’t an inch off. It was amazing. Center punched that deer over in 10 yards. Ama and, and the look on his face and going up, it was just priceless. That was his

00:36:03:10 –> 00:36:03:18
First buck.

00:36:03:18 –> 00:36:05:08
Right. It was priceless. First buck. First buck. That’s

00:36:05:08 –> 00:36:18:13
Awesome. First buck. And he, I mean, I was shocked at how calm, cool. Collected, like coming up to the shot. I mean, you had ’em set up. I mean, if you have kids, it’s good to have, like, you had ’em in the claw, right? Yeah.

00:36:18:14 –> 00:36:28:26
Oh yeah. The, yeah, it’s, the claw is basically the claw that clamps onto your gun, puts it onto your tripod. And so it’s just a real solid rest for a kid. You know? What, two for adults?

00:36:28:29 –> 00:36:29:18
How far was it? Two.

00:36:30:07 –> 00:36:33:05
Oh, it was like 270 or 80 yards or something. Yeah. Two

00:36:33:05 –> 00:36:33:20
50 plus

00:36:34:11 –> 00:36:38:05
It felt like 14 miles. You know, I mean, I’m looking at it going,

00:36:39:03 –> 00:36:40:23
Oh, please go down. Come on,

00:36:40:23 –> 00:36:42:10
Please go down, please. You know,

00:36:43:13 –> 00:36:45:20
Kids, because was like the last day that

00:36:45:20 –> 00:36:45:29
You could help.

00:36:46:05 –> 00:36:48:13
It was like weekends. That’s the struggle with kids. We all had

00:36:49:05 –> 00:36:50:14
That was opening morning with

00:36:50:14 –> 00:36:51:23
School. Oh, was it? It was,

00:36:51:23 –> 00:36:53:04
It was Sean that came up.

00:36:53:17 –> 00:36:58:25
But keep in mind, I mean they, you know, we try not to hunt on Sundays and we got all week of school leave Friday

00:36:58:28 –> 00:37:00:19
Night and you hunt Saturday. Yeah. And drive home.

00:37:00:19 –> 00:37:01:14
Yeah. That’s what you got. You

00:37:01:14 –> 00:37:03:02
Know? So that’s what I meant like with all this. And

00:37:03:02 –> 00:37:13:10
So the next weekend, I’m promising Sean, it’s his turn. So hopefully if Justin kills the back, then I go home. Sean goes throughout the whole week of school. We come up on a Saturday morning, get Shauna buck, like

00:37:13:11 –> 00:37:17:23
We’re messing with hockey practice. I can’t remember. Yeah. It was, you had something going in Salt Lake hockey and

00:37:17:23 –> 00:37:18:24
We’re like, they had hockey.

00:37:18:24 –> 00:37:19:26
Let’s just go up and see if we can

00:37:20:11 –> 00:37:31:01
Hockey. I know. So anyway, those kids, there’s nothing like it. Of course, you had your kids and, and thanks to you Jeff, you did a lot of the scouting and, and homework and, and that’s kind of your backyard up

00:37:31:01 –> 00:37:31:17
There. Yeah. Yeah.

00:37:31:24 –> 00:37:45:25
That southern Idaho. Yeah. You know, and you, and we talk about places being marginal. I know we mentioned, you know, Utah General and some of these, and like, you know, you were talking about your sheep hunt in relation to the sheep tag and stuff. But you had a 200 inch plus deer found on that particular unit.

00:37:46:14 –> 00:38:04:10
It was good. It, you know, we found him. Oh, what? I saw him about 10 days before the hunt, I think. Started Yeah. Went back and I didn’t actually see the buck again until opening day. And we saw him. Yeah. And you’ve talked about it a hundred times. Little things, you know, little

00:38:04:10 –> 00:38:05:06
Things make or break. Yeah.

00:38:05:09 –> 00:38:05:29
Make or break. Yeah.

00:38:06:08 –> 00:38:09:22
Heavily, heavily on a general season type thing like that, you know, you have one

00:38:09:27 –> 00:38:32:19
Chance. And I, man, I didn’t, I I, you know, I had a couple little things that screwed us up. Like what? Well, we had to go track down an issue with, you know, the reason why my kid didn’t have a gun that opening morning was, was, you know, when opening morning we’re sitting there and we’re going through tags, just double checking everything. And, and we didn’t have a license with us or something. Yeah. I can’t remember.

00:38:32:19 –> 00:38:32:25
You

00:38:32:25 –> 00:38:35:14
Didn’t have the tags. And so we’re, we just, you know, we just basically away

00:38:35:14 –> 00:38:43:25
And you can’t print out a duplicate. You have to go to an office Yes. To get a duplicate. Where normally if you didn’t print one out, you can go to any vendor Yes. And have it printed out.

00:38:43:28 –> 00:39:04:11
Yep. So it was, you know, we were just double checking everything. And I should have double checked that before, beforehand. And so we ended up, even though we had seen the bucks Beded, we thought, okay, they’re fine there, let’s go. We’ll straighten out the stuff with the tag and we’ll come back. Well, we leave and next thing we know there’s five hunters just randomly out of all the places

00:39:04:20 –> 00:39:05:28
In the world, they’re gonna a deer drive. They’re

00:39:05:28 –> 00:39:07:07
Gonna make a deer. They made a deer drive

00:39:07:07 –> 00:39:08:17
Driving Quaker patches.

00:39:09:26 –> 00:39:10:04
Quaker.

00:39:10:08 –> 00:39:10:23
There’s

00:39:10:29 –> 00:39:12:20
Trees. Sagebrush. I mean, it’s tall.

00:39:12:20 –> 00:39:17:13
They’re, it’s tall. Sbr, they, they call it, what do they call it? What do you guys call it? Brush bust. Brush brushing. Brush

00:39:17:14 –> 00:39:19:26
Pop. Yeah. Brushing. Yeah, brushing. They were brushing deer. That’s,

00:39:19:26 –> 00:39:21:23
Yeah. He’s like, they’re brushing deer. I’m like, what’s brush?

00:39:21:25 –> 00:39:23:08
That’s a northern Utah term,

00:39:23:19 –> 00:39:24:06
Apparently. Yeah. It must be a northern,

00:39:24:14 –> 00:39:25:14
We call ’em drive down

00:39:25:14 –> 00:39:29:22
Deer. But the sagebrush, for all intents and purposes, sagebrush is like six feet tall. It is so tall. Yeah.

00:39:29:22 –> 00:40:01:02
It’s, it was tall and they had deep beds dug in. Like, I mean, out of three or four bucks that were in there, we could see the butt of one of ’em. You know what I mean? Yeah. You just couldn’t see. And you know, and as usual, these guys had no idea. The deer were there and they walked through and blew everything out. I mean, it, they were gone, you know, they get down and I’m like, oh my gosh. And they’re like, don’t you see that vocal right out? I’m like, no, I didn’t see it. You blew him out. You ruined it for us. We had embedded it and I, you know, it was, it’s little things. Little things kill big deer.

00:40:01:03 –> 00:40:01:12
Yeah.

00:40:01:22 –> 00:40:03:04
You gotta have it straightened out. Yeah.

00:40:03:08 –> 00:40:10:23
And if your mind would’ve been geared up and you’d have been there on, you know, oh yeah. You’d have been there. Know, ready. They killed the deer and killed. We knew where they

00:40:10:23 –> 00:40:12:01
Were at. Yeah. We knew where they were at. Yeah.

00:40:12:13 –> 00:40:24:04
And I think there’s also, you know, there’s an aggressiveness. You need to know when to be aggressive and when to, when it’s okay to be passive, you know, and that particular situation, like, we need to take control. Yeah.

00:40:24:08 –> 00:40:25:12
We, we should have just got done.

00:40:25:12 –> 00:40:26:18
You needed to take control, Jeff.

00:40:27:10 –> 00:40:27:16
It’s

00:40:27:16 –> 00:40:28:29
True. It’s true. You

00:40:28:29 –> 00:40:37:04
Know? Fantastic. So anyway, and I had to happen to have a super tag. Oh yeah. And I’m like, if Jeff so much is freaking trip, I’m killing this dude.

00:40:40:13 –> 00:40:40:22
Yeah.

00:40:41:03 –> 00:40:41:28
We had video of the

00:40:41:28 –> 00:41:03:04
Bear with the mentor tag. You gotta, the adult has to have a tag with this kid. And so luckily, you know, I’d had a super tag. So I’m legal to be in the field with a gun, can kill a deer. You know. So Justin and I are both packing rifles anyway. And if the 220 inch deer happens to get outta Jeffrey’s sites, I’m gonna crush the thing. So anyway, I wouldn’t blame the guy for

00:41:03:04 –> 00:41:05:29
Doing gets a windmill front leg. It’s fair game. Yeah.

00:41:07:09 –> 00:41:07:18
Geez.

00:41:08:16 –> 00:41:10:07
Final bullet tags the animal, right?

00:41:10:20 –> 00:41:15:11
Well you go, you know. Yeah, that’s about right. We’ll find out if we’re still gonna be brother

00:41:16:11 –> 00:41:17:22
Out. Find out how close you two really are.

00:41:17:23 –> 00:41:18:13
Yeah, that’s right.

00:41:19:24 –> 00:41:21:10
Find out who your friends are. That’s

00:41:21:10 –> 00:41:25:13
Right. That’s right. So anyway, yeah, that was awesome. So great opportunity. Kids

00:41:25:13 –> 00:41:27:25
Are so head back up there again to Idaho, Jeff. Yep. We’re

00:41:27:25 –> 00:41:29:24
Gonna be cool. Gonna be hunting southern

00:41:29:27 –> 00:41:33:15
This time. It’ll be double, triple check before opening day and yeah. Oh,

00:41:33:15 –> 00:41:40:28
I’ve already done it. I’ve, I’ve gone through night. My younger boy actually, he passed hunter safety. So, so we’ll have got two of them have three of us. We’ll

00:41:41:00 –> 00:41:42:02
Have two boys. Got That’s awesome.

00:41:42:08 –> 00:41:42:25
Holy cow.

00:41:43:06 –> 00:42:41:24
It’s gonna be fun. And I got, I got a boy, he’s 12, of course. We went down to New Mexico a few years. Jason with our boys. Yeah. He shot a little buck down there. But it’s kind of fun that first year when they turned 12, it kind of opens up. It does. You know, Utah first hunt, even though they’ve hunted before, it’s still your home state. Your first year in your home state’s. Pretty neat. I’ve got a son and a daughter both this year. That daughter didn’t draw last year and my son drew the first year. So looking forward to that. Kids hunts are fun. Less pressure in ways, more pressure in other ways because it, it’s, you know, they have tight windows. Utah gives them a Monday off to hunt. Yeah. Fortunately on the rifle hunt at least. So, you know, we’re, we’re usually getting outta the field from what we’re doing. And you want to, you got 24 to 48 hours to hopefully get a buck on the ground for ’em. And, and then they got school and we can miss some school. But like we said, this day and age between that and sports and stuff, they’re in, it’s, it’s harder than I ever remember. No,

00:42:41:24 –> 00:42:49:16
You get a day and a half window to make it happen. And I’m thinking the whole time, it’s like, it’s the most pressure, it’s worse than guiding clients. I mean, oh, it

00:42:49:16 –> 00:42:50:16
Is. It’s hard on you.

00:42:50:21 –> 00:42:59:05
Well, and you’re dealing with, you know, emotions of kids not being able to balance a deer get in the way. They, they let it affect them. They’re like, you know, it ruins their day and it, and

00:42:59:23 –> 00:43:01:02
You know, and it kind of ruins my dad. Yeah.

00:43:01:02 –> 00:43:13:08
It kind of does. But, but it’s like they, they’re not used to the ups and downs of hunting as much. They, they wanna go and just like when they go fishing, they wanna be rolling and fishing one after another. It’s, and

00:43:13:10 –> 00:43:27:20
You want to too, because, you know, you hope got a day and a half right? You and you’re across state boundaries or something. You got a day and a half let’s say, or whatever, two and a half. And so you got this fine window. Gotta make it happen. By the way, we’ve gotta enjoy the experience as fast as we can rush.

00:43:27:20 –> 00:43:29:02
Don’t, and that’s a, by the way,

00:43:29:05 –> 00:43:32:26
We’re gonna enjoy this right now. Are you having fun? You know, good. All,

00:43:33:12 –> 00:43:34:08
Alright, let’s go.

00:43:34:15 –> 00:43:35:00
There’s

00:43:35:00 –> 00:43:59:11
A buck. Let’s enjoy watching him. Alright, let’s kill it. You know, it got away. Oh, are you kidding me? You know, and so there’s, it’s like, it’s that fine balance of we’re gonna have this wonderful experience and see all this wildlife and, and tastefully take the life of an animal, take, you know, package it at, take it home, turn it into jerky, everything that the kids are looking forward to in a day and a half, you

00:43:59:11 –> 00:44:03:12
Know. Well, and if you want to know pressure, try having Jason Carter as your brother-in-law.

00:44:04:11 –> 00:44:04:18
So

00:44:05:09 –> 00:44:05:19
Every

00:44:05:23 –> 00:44:19:18
Buck that you see, you, I mean they’re, they’re comparing it to what Jason kills. I mean it’s terrible. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. You know, and dad comes home with 180 inch buck and your boy’s looking at you like, what’s wrong with you dad? Oh, like

00:44:20:09 –> 00:44:37:24
Jason likes way bigger bucks. My own boys do it to me. I brought home like a 200 inch and Sean’s like, really Dad? That’s the best you could do. I said, Sean, do you know what that is? He’s like, well, a nice buck, you know. And I’m like, no, that’s a 200 inch steer Sean. And Sean’s like, well it just doesn’t seem that wide.

00:44:38:01 –> 00:44:44:16
This is a kid. This is the kid that’s growing up with mounted bucks at 2 72 70.

00:44:44:25 –> 00:44:45:04
He’s

00:44:45:04 –> 00:44:45:11
Two 50

00:44:45:25 –> 00:44:48:13
And he see these his every day while he eats his Captain Crunch.

00:44:49:02 –> 00:44:55:18
He’s looking at these. Yeah. And so he’s asking me like, dad, do you think we can kill a 200 inch on my hunt? And I’m like, well, you got a day and a half.

00:44:58:14 –> 00:44:59:07
I dunno what to tell you.

00:45:00:09 –> 00:45:03:18
Prob let’s just say no. Okay. We can enjoy these. Let’s, let’s keep things

00:45:03:18 –> 00:45:32:00
Real. You know, these kids pay attention to these numbers. I mean they, they really do. Like four years ago, my kid was taking, I mean he was, he learned how to measure deer. We were pulling the deer off the wall and he was measuring the bucks. He was taping ’em out. As soon as we got that Boone and Crockett sheet printed out. Yeah. He’s like, all right, well, you know, and, and you know, I made a post on Instagram forever ago and I’m like, no more fish stories. He’s like, you can’t, you can’t lie to your kids until that buck scores this ’cause Well he’s gonna pull ’em down. He’s gonna make,

00:45:32:01 –> 00:45:42:17
Hey dad, you said this was 182 inches and I got 168 Now either my calculator, either my calculator is wrong or you’re wrong dad.

00:45:42:22 –> 00:45:46:18
No, he shrunk 14 inches in the last two years while it’s, Hey have you ever

00:45:46:18 –> 00:45:49:11
Heard of the drying period? They have that for a reason, son. Now shut up.

00:45:51:20 –> 00:45:52:17
So yeah’s true.

00:45:52:17 –> 00:45:54:19
You know, these kids are just more educated than they used to be.

00:45:54:23 –> 00:46:02:00
Well, and it’s kind of gotta be a proud moment. Your your your kids’ in into it wanting to major your deer score. And then it’s also one of those times where it’s like,

00:46:02:13 –> 00:46:03:19
Just get a few your

00:46:03:19 –> 00:46:10:19
Belly, how much value, how much value is he placing on score? And you go through that whole emotion as a dad. Like what have I really taught this kid

00:46:10:19 –> 00:46:14:22
Goes back to just, you know, find if it’s got four points, put it down. You know, that’s

00:46:14:22 –> 00:47:04:13
What it’s about. Yeah. And enjoy the hunt. Enjoy the kill. Enjoy the meat. My kids love the jerky. They love, Hey dad, we’re eating that elk, right? Yeah. I’m like, oh yeah, this is the elk we killed and such and such. And I mean, you know, but anyway, the emphasis on score is always a fine balance. You know, we wanna take mature animals, we want to, it, it’s, there’s something about hunting the biggest thing that walks not gonna lie, no way. But at the same time, these kids, I mean it’s just different than when we grew up. It’s just different. I used to take a week off school just to go state to state Turkey hunting. You know, maybe that’s why I hate it so much ’cause we ground it out. But you know, nowadays you don’t take a week off school, even if it’s deer hunting Here in Utah, we have a few days that they allow ’em there in October by tradition. But anyway, what does that bring us to boys

00:47:04:13 –> 00:47:07:29
End, end of October? What have everybody got going on October?

00:47:07:29 –> 00:47:08:29
Usually that’s a Colorado general

00:47:08:29 –> 00:47:12:24
Deer and Utah. We kind of talked about that, but then we’re mid few

00:47:12:24 –> 00:47:12:26
Of us.

00:47:13:05 –> 00:47:14:04
Colorado. Colorado, yeah.

00:47:14:20 –> 00:47:25:24
Yeah. My kids got, you know, leftover basically second choice type tags there. Colorado second season, that October 21st, which, you know, second season what,

00:47:25:29 –> 00:47:26:07
What

00:47:26:17 –> 00:47:32:08
We just got done talking about trying to make something outta nothing. And now we’re talking about one of those hunt. I know

00:47:32:20 –> 00:47:32:29
It’s

00:47:32:29 –> 00:47:33:20
Every time second season

00:47:33:28 –> 00:47:35:00
We go from Jeffrey’s

00:47:35:07 –> 00:47:35:11
Leftover

00:47:35:17 –> 00:47:58:12
Jeffrey’s awesome Nevada tag to my awesome Nevada tag to now Utah Generals, second choice Utah Generals, and then second choice here in Colorado. So, but you know, honestly, honestly, so in, in, in, in normal weather years, the second season can produce the biggest deer of the year. And, and when you have that snowstorm, usually first storm

00:47:58:12 –> 00:47:58:17
Of

00:47:58:17 –> 00:48:17:17
The year or two snowstorms, and you got first dibs basically, and you got first dibs and you’ll see a little bit of rutt there at the end of that hunt. And by the 29th, the last of the nine day season, a lot of times you’re by yourself those last two or three days. And so we’ve had some great hunts on the second and kind of looking forward to that one with my kids. Yeah.

00:48:18:02 –> 00:48:42:11
Well, like you said, you gotta, when when we apply, many of these states are opening up the same time. It’s not a lock. They’re going to get a Utah general tag. Right. So you gotta put ’em in for that. Right. You gotta put ’em in for Colorado. Either burn their points with one or two, which I think you did with one of your boys this year, or put ’em in for second choice tag. You want your kids to have one or two hunts. You do that year, you know, a couple of your kids ended up with like three Jason. Yeah. This

00:48:42:11 –> 00:48:46:02
Year, New Mexico. Remember we only have a day and a half a piece. That’s right.

00:48:46:28 –> 00:48:55:28
So, you know, but, but you know, none of us have a crystal ball and, and these aren’t stuff we’re burning 10 points on. No. And you got four of ’em and you’re like, I can’t do any of them justice.

00:48:55:28 –> 00:48:57:05
New Mexico tags, they’re

00:48:57:05 –> 00:49:18:17
Just, just opportunity hunts. You know, we have a few of those worked in, you know, my elk and maybe a couple of these others. The others, we have to make stuff out stuff. Like probably all of us do. We don’t all draw three or four awesome trophy tags a year. That fills up our whole schedule. We have to get breaks, luck, weather, all things like that to, but if the guy have something go our way, that’s right. But

00:49:18:21 –> 00:49:49:11
The guy wants to hunt. There’s tags out there. There is. And our kids are proving it. Yeah. I mean there’s unlimited draws there. In, in Idaho, there’s easy draws on some Colorado, these general and Utah. And then like we did in Colorado, there’s second choices. You know, we got four season tags with two points. You know what I mean? And so there in Colorado, and so there’s a, there’s a, there’s some opportunity out there. Jeff’s proven you can draw with zero points. You can draw one of the most premier units in the state of Nevada or archery. Archery. Archery. Archery. That

00:49:49:11 –> 00:49:57:14
Word premier is being thrown around like a wet cat. That’s all I know. And I’ve never set foot in his unit looking for a deer.

00:49:58:04 –> 00:49:59:00
No. We only go down

00:49:59:00 –> 00:50:00:25
There. I’ve got a desert sheep there. Let, let,

00:50:01:18 –> 00:50:03:23
Have you ever seen a deer while you were guiding desert sheep?

00:50:04:09 –> 00:50:04:16
No.

00:50:07:29 –> 00:50:21:14
So, oh, nice. So NICE’s where we’re at as Jeff licks the stamp to send the that back. Alright. So anyway, yeah. So that John, you’re gonna have deer hunt here in Utah. Yep. Looks like. And

00:50:21:14 –> 00:50:26:04
That’s another one under that dedicated program. John, tell us about that, you know, for people that Yeah, the

00:50:26:04 –> 00:51:18:26
Dedicated program’s really kind of nice, especially if, you know, if you’ve got a little bit of time and you wanna hunt multiple seasons. And since they’ve changed the structure of the Utah general hunts, the quality’s really come back and it gives you the chance to be in the field a lot. Unlike Jeff, I, I struck out this year on drawing great tags. So I’m really relying on, you know, that Utah general, I did draw the dedicated, which last year I didn’t, you know, I had to skip last year because I didn’t have a point. Yeah, it took a point this year, which, you know, traditionally in the past it was pretty easy to get those tags, but now the quality’s coming on, they’ve cut tags back than it’s a lot harder to get. Yeah. Some of those tags. But I can hunt archery, muzz loader rifle on those. And again, you know, that’s, I’ve got kids that are coming up on that age, you know, where they’re hunting and, and it’s another good opportunity to get in the, in the hills with my kids too.

00:51:19:23 –> 00:51:36:19
Yeah, it’s awesome. I think it’s great man. Well good. And then what do we got here? Looks like we’re gonna have some Colorado deer and, and elk and different things. Bronson, it brings us back to you, buddy. Well, of course by this time you’ve guided 14 desert sheep hunters and made everybody’s dreams come true.

00:51:37:10 –> 00:52:22:23
I hope so. So, because these November hunts, the, the first thing to give in my schedule if I’m it your own personal hunting is my own personal hunting. I know it. That’s when it comes, comes to guiding, we’ve got a busy year, a bunch of sheep hunters, most of them desert sheep rock as well, have some big deer to kill the end of October and the Henrys and whatnot excited about that as always. But obviously when you sign up to to be a guide and you, you book hunters, you, you owe that to them. And so if, if we’re not quite done by the fourth or 5th of November when the third season opens up, well then I’m gonna be still here in Utah and I’ll have to just break free and go to Colorado. I picked up a, a very marginal landowner tag in a unit I’ve never hunted before.

00:52:22:28 –> 00:53:00:20
So I don’t have that high of expectations, but it is a third season landowner deer tag. I’ll be going over there this year as soon as I’m done with my obligations with my, my, with my sheep hunters. But looking forward to that, you know, as we kind of talked about you, you just call it out as one of those places that genetics are too good and the potential is so good if you get some weather to, to not be there. And so I couldn’t forego the opportunity at least to secure a tag. Don’t really have, you know, 200 inch aspiration. I have aspirations. Yeah. But I don’t have that rea think that that’s gonna happen. Yeah. But you know, you know, see what happens. Does year

00:53:00:20 –> 00:53:06:08
Was terrible. Does those, those are the season dates that it makes it, with very little scouting, you can kill, you could kill a court.

00:53:06:13 –> 00:53:07:28
That’s kinda why I called that, you know, I

00:53:07:28 –> 00:53:10:29
Well, and you’ve done it twice. Yeah, I’ve done it. You killed two bucks over 200. Yeah.

00:53:11:15 –> 00:53:24:02
And, and sometimes on a leftover, sometimes on a tag, I burned eight or nine points to draw. So, and, and I’ve been there many other times and haven’t, oh, I’ve killed bucks or not Just decided not to shoot ’em. But you just gotta be in Colorado.

00:53:24:09 –> 00:53:29:28
Yeah, yeah. You’ve had, you’ve had, you’ve gone from, well last year mine was there last year having basically 70 degree weather

00:53:30:04 –> 00:53:30:20
In the fourth,

00:53:31:03 –> 00:53:31:23
In the fourth season.

00:53:31:23 –> 00:53:35:02
Killing and deer over 10,000 feet in the fourth season. And was

00:53:35:02 –> 00:53:36:00
It the year prior? You had

00:53:36:19 –> 00:53:42:06
Two prior. Two years prior you had phenomen had a blizzard. It was phenomenal for three days. Yeah. So let’s choose through three to five days a your hunt. Three

00:53:42:19 –> 00:53:44:20
On the fourth, you only had two days left, right? That’s

00:53:44:20 –> 00:53:58:05
Right. So I mean, so you can beg for snow and then it can be too much. I mean it yes, but the bottom line Colorado as often as I can be there we’re obviously a little bit of a luxury. It’s a state away. We can be there in five to seven hours in most of the units. And so yeah, it’s a long drive

00:53:58:05 –> 00:53:58:29
By Nevada standards.

00:53:59:14 –> 00:54:20:28
Yeah. Once again, we’re gonna get blasted by everybody else across the US for having to only drive five hours to hunt. That’s right. Hunt mule there. That’s right. But looking forward to that and see where it goes. Then we kinda get into to mid-November and Chris, we’re gonna be heading, heading to Arizona with you. You drew a muzz loader elk tag? I

00:54:20:28 –> 00:54:35:00
Did, yeah. For the last 10 years I’ve been following other people around chasing big bulls and watching Big Bulls fall. And I’ve always had that bug, but just I’ve been waiting for a good tag and finally my turn come up. So yeah, man, heading down there. Tell us

00:54:35:01 –> 00:54:36:05
A little bit about it. Where

00:54:36:20 –> 00:55:04:00
I, I decided to go, well after talking to Jason this year applying, I went for a, a season that and a tag that was a little easier to draw. It’s a late season muzzle loader. And so, you know, I just, I I’m ready. I want to go And this seemed like a good year. Yeah. Things are looking good down there, so I thought, you know what, I’m gonna, I’m gonna burn some points and go down. It’s maybe, maybe not the best season dates, but it’s like, like I said, it was

00:55:04:00 –> 00:55:05:20
Easier there guys killing three 80 bull.

00:55:05:25 –> 00:55:14:26
This is a very unique season. That’s the other thing. I mean, it is better than the December 1st to seven rifle hunt. Yeah, no question. And so it’s a late but earlier season.

00:55:14:26 –> 00:55:17:08
It’s a glass bowl, very glass unit. Yeah.

00:55:17:08 –> 00:55:20:06
So you, you get first crack at these first crack these bulls with the fire first

00:55:20:06 –> 00:55:23:14
After the archery, but before the rifle hunters just crush ’em. Yeah.

00:55:23:14 –> 00:55:41:13
And you’re, you have less than a hundred tags. I wanna say there’s like 75 compared to four to 500. I can’t remember how they’re really on the rifle, but a lot. So, and obviously you get use a scope and Arizona, so not that primitive of a weapon really. And so I think you got, you got a Remington, what do you got

00:55:41:13 –> 00:55:48:10
Basically? What are you working onm basically Robinson’s keying it up that you better not miss for all intents and purposes. Chris, you’ve got a rifle. Yeah,

00:55:48:10 –> 00:55:49:12
Pretty much. Pretty much, much.

00:55:49:12 –> 00:55:51:08
You got a 400 yard single shot. Yeah.

00:55:52:28 –> 00:56:00:01
So yeah, I did, I did just get a new muzzle loader set up and so I’m hoping that’s good. Gonna work out for me.

00:56:00:11 –> 00:56:12:04
Well, and that same gun’s legal in Utah now. Yeah. So I think you’re dedicated here in Utah. So if you don’t kill a deer in the bow hunt, you can use, you know, Utah, you can use magnify scopes now too. Just like Arizona and New Mexico. Yeah. So.

00:56:12:12 –> 00:56:51:16
Well that’s good. You know, elk tags are kind of a premium here in the office. We actually, you know, we hunt a lot of deer. We hunt elk when we can. The, the tags are somewhat tough to draw, but you know, I’ve got a New Mexico elk tag there at the first part of October. Chris has got this elk tag. And anyway, we just try to make the most of ’em when they come. And we’ve done not too bad with the few elk tags. It’s not like we made it a huge emphasis to Yeah. Kill giant. Like we like seems like, but Oh yeah. And we hunt ’em and we’re aggressive about applying for ’em. But between Adam’s tag and my tag and Chris’s tag, I don’t know who else. You guys got any elk tags? Jeff? Huh? Your your boys? One

00:56:51:16 –> 00:56:53:02
Of your boys? Yeah. My boys got that 52

00:56:53:07 –> 00:56:54:06
In Idaho. That’s

00:56:54:06 –> 00:57:02:29
Right. Oh, he drew that. That’s right. So Idaho does have some new seasons that are pretty awesome and 52, they’ve got some of these depredation seasons. They got one that opens August 1st

00:57:03:05 –> 00:57:04:16
Today. Yeah. They’re hunting today,

00:57:04:17 –> 00:57:27:22
Today. Velvet bulls, velt bulls. It just doesn’t happen unless you’re on Indian reservations to be able to kill velvet bulls. So it’s pretty, with a rifle. They had trophy bulls and I mean, even though it’s, it’s technically a depredation season as of last year. This year they, they’ve got enough elk out there. They actually need to manage ’em and do it on a consistent basis. So they’ve, they’ve opened up seasons there and then Jeff draws, Jeff’s boy draws, was it the mid-season?

00:57:27:25 –> 00:57:31:20
The, the mid-season. So the October 1st or 30th is what he’s gonna be hunting. Yeah.

00:57:31:20 –> 00:57:34:23
And you’ve been up there seen some, you know, plenty of signs, seen sign

00:57:34:23 –> 00:57:54:25
Trucks. We’ve only had a day or two, you know, we realize that things are gonna change around the rut. Yeah. Like that’s, it’s gonna be the game changer. And then a lot of the elk in that unit I think do migrate down into there. Yeah. So, you know, we’re gonna hit it hard probably right around the rutt. ’cause I want my boy to get out and see some, you know, that that’s something that every kid needs to see is

00:57:54:27 –> 00:57:59:16
You wanna give him eight hours, hours of quality experience and then eight hours of hunting and you kill a bull and golf. There

00:57:59:16 –> 00:58:00:08
You go. That would be great.

00:58:00:14 –> 00:58:03:00
And you have the most phenomenal father-son outing There

00:58:03:00 –> 00:58:25:12
Is. Yeah. So, so we’ll probably go up and scout it hard a little bit in September. Yeah. Just to, you know, see the dynamic change, you know, the ruts here, you know, these bulls are bugle and they said that, you know, most places you do get a little bit, you can get a little bit of rutt that 1st of October. So we’ll probably go hit it the 1st of October and then we’ll probably pull off until until the end of the end of the house. October. How long does

00:58:25:12 –> 00:58:26:18
That go? Do you remember? It goes a

00:58:26:18 –> 00:58:28:08
Full 30 days. It’s, it’s October of October.

00:58:28:26 –> 00:58:41:10
And we talked, actually talked, I talked to a member yesterday that has a cousin that owns property within that unit that knows the bulls we’re talking about. And he’s like, dude, that’s a great experience. Yeah. That’s

00:58:41:10 –> 00:58:47:19
Gonna be an awesome, we’re gonna, we’re gonna give it a shot and see how it goes. We got a gun ready to go so he can go whack a bull. It’ll be

00:58:47:19 –> 00:58:50:02
Fun. Somebody says, dad, I wanna shoot the one face in us.

00:58:50:19 –> 00:58:55:04
Yeah. You’re like, it’s a rag hor. Nope. We’re gonna put a stop to that if that happens.

00:58:56:22 –> 00:58:58:28
Anyway. No, he, I forgot about that.

00:58:59:05 –> 00:59:04:02
Whatever he wants forgot about. That’s awesome. I forgot about him, him drawing that. And that’s your 12, 13 year old?

00:59:04:03 –> 00:59:05:13
He’s 13, yeah. Yeah, he’s 13.

00:59:05:19 –> 00:59:07:22
He’s the perfect age man. These kids are just,

00:59:07:24 –> 00:59:09:29
They just want something brown in front of him

00:59:10:06 –> 00:59:15:28
Most of time. Do you remember Adam? Like when we were young, like we, we didn’t hunt at 12 years old. We didn’t hunt big game. Oh

00:59:15:28 –> 00:59:17:11
Yeah. 14 was, well

00:59:17:18 –> 00:59:18:01
I think 16.

00:59:18:01 –> 00:59:25:24
They changed it my year when I was 14. They changed. It was 16 the year I could hunt. They changed it to 14 and I felt like I was in

00:59:25:24 –> 00:59:28:29
Heaven and I had to wait till I was, I think it was when they changed it, it was 15.

00:59:28:29 –> 00:59:30:00
You had to wait one more year or

00:59:30:00 –> 00:59:32:23
Something. Yes. And it just, I mean, you

00:59:32:23 –> 00:59:37:20
Know, but yeah, you went from 16 to 14 and then to 12 and so Yeah, it’s

00:59:37:20 –> 00:59:48:10
Changed a lot. Yeah, it’s, it’s helped a lot. ’cause you get these kids going earlier in life, you know, and back then, I mean, you know, we didn’t have else, else didn’t state to state per se. No. You know what I mean?

00:59:48:14 –> 01:00:32:22
You didn’t have to, we had over the counter tags in Utah, you just hunted here and maybe went outta state. I went outta state my first time when I was probably 16 or 17 to Colorado. Yeah. Have some friends of mine that he, he owned a actually private ranch in south west Colorado. Went there back to back years, shop five point bulls on his place. Yeah. It was awesome. But that, I wouldn’t have never gone if it wouldn’t had that connection. But yeah, you, you made the most of your general season tag and that was about it. You did, you did. You know, maybe a overthe counter elk too, but, but yeah, there’s, there’s a, there’s a lot that’s changed and, and overall, you know, from an age standpoint it’s a good thing. There’s a lot more things to take kids’ time now. It feels like. It feels like when we were kids, all there was to do was walk out your back door with your BB gun and go home. Well

01:00:32:22 –> 01:00:35:02
Put the electronics. There wasn’t any Right. We had Atari.

01:00:35:06 –> 01:00:40:08
There was no inter, we had a tarry. That’s right. And that guy Frogger got old you’s

01:00:40:10 –> 01:00:45:01
Of that Pacman came sometime later than that even. I don’t even remember so well

01:00:45:01 –> 01:00:52:24
The pressure in school and there was no internet. The pre the school you had school and maybe some athletics and that was really, that was it. And then hunting. Yeah. And people

01:00:53:06 –> 01:01:13:20
Expected you to like, people expected you not to be there during the deer hunt. Like that was a thing. Yeah. Now it’s like they really ignore that. Especially, you know, we’re from northern Utah, but I mean there’s no, you know, like we got out on Thursday just so we could prep to go on Saturday this Friday just so we could prep for the deer hunt. You know what I mean? Yeah. That does not happen anymore.

01:01:13:20 –> 01:01:17:10
Well back then it was called the deer hunt that you got off of school and that does not exist.

01:01:17:19 –> 01:01:18:20
It’s called harvest holiday.

01:01:18:29 –> 01:01:19:13
Harvest

01:01:19:13 –> 01:01:23:14
Holiday. You could be doing your garden. Gotta be proper. You could be cleaning off your garden that day. Yeah.

01:01:23:21 –> 01:01:28:04
This isn’t the kill holiday. It’s down to one day too off school. Is that all it is? Yeah. It’s only one

01:01:28:04 –> 01:01:30:18
Day. Just Monday. But yeah, Monday it’s better than this. We call

01:01:30:24 –> 01:01:50:02
It a Friday through Monday, you know. Yeah. Well, let’s see. So just to wrap up our thoughts here, Chris, you’re gonna kill a giant bull in Arizona. That’s right. Okay, let’s move on. November is for deer hunting and so I know that’s right. You know, Colton and I drew tags there in New Mexico. The, the, maybe the toughest tags in the world to kill something. Once again,

01:01:50:02 –> 01:01:55:13
Opportunity tags, but no points. So similar you can gamble in New Mexico and draw a tag and gamble. There’s no point.

01:01:55:13 –> 01:02:01:26
Yeah. Yeah. So, but very similar to Jeff’s, you know, Nevada tag. I just, I don’t know, I’m just trying to

01:02:01:26 –> 01:02:03:06
Coach you, maybe learn something, turn

01:02:03:06 –> 01:02:05:14
This back or what, you know, but there’s no points to Yeah, you’re,

01:02:05:14 –> 01:02:11:10
You’re done. Your points, you’re your, oh, I know your permit fee’s paid. I know. You might as go down there and hunt.

01:02:11:20 –> 01:02:25:10
I know. Just go hunt. Right. So anyway. And so anyway, got that tag. It’s only a five day season in the desert with no deer, but there’s a couple of giants. So hopefully we do something on that. Which brings me to another point, Adam.

01:02:26:07 –> 01:02:26:16
Yeah.

01:02:26:18 –> 01:02:32:17
Being the tag junkie than he is. Drew a phenomenal deer tag up there in Wyoming. Don’t, huh? You’re

01:02:32:17 –> 01:02:41:05
Using adjectives today that probably a little overdone but phenomenal. And you used something else earlier with Chris,

01:02:41:05 –> 01:02:43:01
But dude, you got a ru a rifle rutt hunt.

01:02:43:03 –> 01:02:57:20
It’s a rifle rutt hunt. I I, I had max points obviously been flying since they started the point system in Wyoming. Oh. In all truthfulness. I should have been up there two or three times by now. And hunting. G r h the

01:02:57:20 –> 01:03:00:04
Only reason, if you had to do it again, burned, burned your points more often.

01:03:00:11 –> 01:03:43:22
I would’ve, I would’ve hunted more often. The, the only reason I haven’t is, is we guided a lot of sheet punters and about the 15th, that Saturday closest to about, it’s the 15th of September is when it opens here in Utah. Yeah. Which is when g and H open. And we’ve, we’ve long touted and said that those are the best areas in Wyoming to, to have a chance to kill 200 inch steer even though they’re general season, you know, g will take, you know, three to six points over the years to, to draw regular versus special things like that. But, so I should have gone and done that. I hadn’t this year after the hard winter that they had again my September, I knew I was probably gonna be going to Arizona, but I’m just like, you know, that’s gonna be a little bit of a rebuilding probably.

01:03:43:22 –> 01:04:09:19
It’s gonna be a little bit off. I don’t, didn’t feel like burning ’em on a G this year because I knew I was gonna be going down to Arizona. So I threw in for a unit 1 28 tag that, that du Bois late season hunt. Yeah. Still had nine or 10% drying odds. Yeah. I didn’t do the special ’cause I thought, well, if I get it, it goes till November 20th. I plan on hunting third season in Colorado. That gives me, you know, a week to 10 days at the end of that to go up there. It’s not a,

01:04:09:27 –> 01:04:13:02
And by that time of year, your wife is ready for you to leave again.

01:04:16:09 –> 01:04:21:22
The only saving grace to this is that if everything goes well and

01:04:21:23 –> 01:04:22:29
It’ll be a short hunt, it’ll

01:04:22:29 –> 01:04:29:04
Be a short hunt. That’s right. And I’ll get up there. It’s a rut hunt. I don’t have time to go. It’s not gonna be one I have to go scout and run ahead

01:04:29:04 –> 01:04:30:00
Of time. Right. No, you can’t scout

01:04:30:00 –> 01:04:37:06
It so I can show up and literally hunt five days. That’s right. Take it however it is and come home. That’s right. So that’s the saving grace to something like this. But seems

01:04:37:09 –> 01:04:44:26
Like about 10% of ’em from what we’re seeing and the results and the pictures and the reports, about 10% are going one 90 plus ish. It

01:04:44:26 –> 01:05:17:06
Seems like it’s gotten a little better if we can say that there’s a few more. One 90 deers getting killed. Having said that, you know, there’s not a lot of those deer. I expect to look over a lot of deer, which, which is, it’s awesome. You know, and you know, fun hunt. Maybe if I can take my boy up there, send around a weekend just so he can see some stuff like that. He’ll probably talk me into whacking something just because he is there with me. So, yeah. Which, which will be fine. But anyway, I did burn points and draw that hopeful, find something really good on that. Nothing wrong hunting deer in mid-November, like we said, we said

01:05:17:06 –> 01:05:20:20
Nothing’s wrong with it. And it’s like continental in September. That’s right. That’s when you’re supposed to hunt ’em.

01:05:20:25 –> 01:05:32:19
So anyway, points are gone. I don’t really feel that bad or I don’t really feel that much pressure on that hunt because I don’t as, as we’ve said as well. Oh wow. Wyoming deer, they don’t really manage initiated. We’ve

01:05:32:19 –> 01:05:36:24
Been waiting, we’ve been waiting for Wyoming to be for 12 years, 20 years for, for 12.

01:05:37:03 –> 01:05:39:10
And, and it was just time for me. I’m thinking, you know, 12

01:05:39:10 –> 01:05:41:02
Points but 12 years. But

01:05:41:11 –> 01:05:54:04
Nothing’s come up in 12 years to change my mind if I, you know, if I draw it good and, and that’s kind of the way I’m looking at, go make the best of it. Maybe kill a great buck if not, and then I’ll be putting in for G and h whenever my schedule allows. Yes. I’ll make that happen.

01:05:55:01 –> 01:06:04:17
Well, and with and with what we’ve got going on and future plans and whatnot, like you’ll be guiding less hopefully. Oh yeah. And we’ll have time to make good on some of these earlier season hunts.

01:06:04:18 –> 01:06:14:19
Yeah, that, that, that’s been my biggest problem. September, the whole world’s on, you know, open up elk hunting, sheep hunting in Utah. And so it’s hard for me to go away to hunt rifle during September. Well

01:06:14:19 –> 01:06:44:06
It’s, it’s nice the guiding thing’s nice. And I, and I take a couple of clients too, but it’s one of those things, you know, it allows us to be in the field nonstop. It gives us a separate checkbook for gas money and, and a separate checkbook for, you know, applying and doing all the things. And so it’s one of those love-hate situations. It allows us to continue with the knowledge to continue learning all this different stuff and, and working hard out there. But then it also takes away from our personal hunting as well. It’s just one of those love-hate deals. Yeah. But

01:06:44:06 –> 01:07:04:00
Something’s gonna give. But it’s fun. It’s, you know, to, to be able to take sheep punters, which we pre predominantly take are deer hunters on the Henry’s, which is, those are the majority of what I personally guide. I do have some milk hunters that we have and things like that that I don’t always have the time to guide myself. But that’s, that’s pretty dang fun because, you know,

01:07:04:05 –> 01:07:06:08
Kill ’em a spike and their dreams come true. Yeah.

01:07:06:16 –> 01:07:23:08
Curly spike. That’s right. You know, it’s, it’s fun and big spikes. It’s experience and big spikes. I fortunately have the body to still keep doing it and Yeah. And that’s fun. And I haven’t, haven’t hunted a dig sheet for myself yet, so hopefully by the time, you know, I draw a tag, I’ve, I figured out how to kill, kill ’em. Yeah,

01:07:23:13 –> 01:07:58:11
That’s right. Well you gotta make good on ’em and I think you got the right tag. I’m looking forward to it actually. But anyway, what else we got going on? Anything else? Well, we’re gonna do Mexico again, you know, of course. Got my good buddy Mario down there and big box, big box. He’s, he’s all excited showing me pictures of the reservoirs that are full of water. It’s incredible moisture. It should be just another great year down there. Looking forward to that. And anyway, anything else anybody’s got going on? Nada, nada, nada. Just,

01:07:58:14 –> 01:08:03:04
It’s here. It, it starts coming at us pretty fast here week by week from here on out. Yeah,

01:08:03:04 –> 01:08:07:11
There’s a few governor’s seasons that are opening up today, Nevada, and a few different things,

01:08:07:18 –> 01:08:12:00
A few different sheep in Oregon, Nevada and different elk like we’ve talked about. It’s

01:08:12:00 –> 01:08:22:20
August 10th, the Nevada deer opener. Cranks. We’re gonna see some the first, the first bill bucks of the year always come from Nevada. ’cause they got the earliest season dates and that’s what’s fun about it. So

01:08:23:19 –> 01:08:42:10
Wish everybody luck. It’s, it’s coming fast. Not only for us, but for everybody else. So everybody hopefully has a great season. Yeah. Makes the most of the tags they’ve got. Share us with, share us your success with us. Send us photos. We love getting them as we’re always looking for content for the magazine, for the issues coming up next year.

01:08:42:15 –> 01:09:26:19
So again, for those of you who don’t know what we do here at Epic Outdoors, we have a monthly publication December through June, bimonthly the rest of the year with nine total issues. We cover all the Western states before it’s time to apply, give you all the drawing odds, kill percentages, and our comments on those units. With your membership. It’s a hundred dollars a year, but with your membership you can also call in and visit with this. We’re happy to, you know, help you go over your strategies, both short term, midterm long term strategies and try to get you drawn and, and actually, you know, gain points in the states that it make sense. There’s some states that just don’t make sense and, but there’s a lot of states that do. And Adam and I are always willing to visit with you guys and kind of develop some of those plans and help you strategize Jeff here on this podcast.

01:09:27:21 –> 01:10:07:08
He’s large, largely responsible for keeping track of all the guaranteed tags, all of our guided hunt situations where guys can just buy hunts. And so if you didn’t draw a tag and you wanna, you know, still looking to get a hunt and no matter what time of year it is, you can call in right now. And, and Jeff’s here to visit with you, at least in and around his scouting. And so super appreciative of him and, and the relationships that he’s building, you know, across the west here with some of the different outfitters. And so anyway, feel free to call us with that. We also sell landowner tags and, and help guys get tags. That’s our number one goal here is, is to help guys obtain tags across the west. That’s the goal, is to help get ons, world class hunts one way or another.

01:10:07:10 –> 01:11:09:02
And so sometimes it takes a lot of planning and preparation and, and to get those, they don’t just happen, you know, in random draws and in some cases they do and we take ’em when they happen. So anyway, that’s basically what we do. We also have a separate service where we apply guys, we actually take your information and apply you as if you were doing it yourself. And you’ll get your own tags and refunds as well. Even though we do it for you. We just basically process the applications and choose the units where guys, you know, need help on that and just want to trust that we’ll do it for ’em. So anyway, in a nutshell, that’s who we are. Just wanted to kind of visit with everybody before we kick off the hunting season here in 2017. Looking to be awesome. And again, like, like the guys have said, we encourage you to send in your photos, email us [email protected]. You can join, it’s www.epicoutdoors.com. You can join on the web and, and we’ll go from there. Anything else, fellas? Nada. All right. Get out there. Find a big deer. Find a big deer, Jeff.

01:11:10:02 –> 01:11:10:11
I’ll

01:11:10:11 –> 01:11:11:14
Give it a shot. All right guys.
