EP 92: DIY Caribou in Alaska with Jeff John and The Epic Crew. In this episode of The Epic Outdoors Podcast, Jeff tells us about his recent trip to Alaska for self-guided DIY Caribou. Jeff along with his dad and brother made the long trip and were successful on 3 nice bulls. After months of preparation and planning, new gear, and preventative maintenance on equipment Jeff and his family set out to Alaska with a camp trailer and four wheelers in tow. The stars aligned and Jeff and crew had timed the trip perfectly to hit the Caribou migration. If you’ve ever wanted to try DIY Caribou in Alaska this episode will shed some light on what it takes to make it happen.

00:00:02:11 –> 00:00:05:18
When we started getting into the caribou, there were caribou everywhere.
00:00:05:23 –> 00:00:07:16
This is the definition of Velvet Dreams.
00:00:08:00 –> 00:00:12:17
Well, you got quotas and things. Yeah, that could close in a matter of days. So you may need to adapt and move
00:00:13:03 –> 00:00:14:11
Anything to do with Western Big Games.
00:00:17:22 –> 00:00:18:06
Welcome
00:00:18:06 –> 00:00:21:09
To the Epic Outdoors Podcast, powered by Under Armour.
00:00:21:26 –> 00:01:19:16
Hey everybody, Jason Carter and the Epic Outdoors Crew. We got Jeff, John, John Peterson, and Adam Bronson here with us here in the studio today. Kind of a rare occurrence. We’re gonna be talking about Jeff’s caribou hunt Alaska. So it’s gonna be a lot of fun. He, he did it start to finish from, from basic maps, even to locating Alaska to going up there and killing a, killing bulls and fishing and doing it all on their own and tr trekking across Canada in a truck and trailer. So, pretty fun. Pretty fun stuff. Pretty, pretty awesome time for these guys. Before we get started, we wanna thank Un Under Armour for sponsoring these podcasts. A great job that they do in developing great gear. And of course we appreciate our relationship with them. They’ve supported us from the start and have a lot of great gear and products hitting the [email protected]. And then they’ve obviously, you can go under men and sports and hit the click on the hunting and all the hunting gear come up. So all
00:01:19:16 –> 00:01:36:05
Summer long we’ve been listening to Jeff at times talk, maybe talking to biologists or different people. Yeah. You know, he, to tee it up for you, you were, you and your dad and brother and, and I guess your mom went up with your dad just to Yeah. ’cause they drove up. But do it yourself. Learn Alaska, learn
00:01:36:09 –> 00:01:39:29
Yourself Caribou hunt. Which Adam and I have never done. No. And so this is kind of a cool story.
00:01:40:02 –> 00:01:41:15
So, and okay. I’ve never been to Alaska.
00:01:41:15 –> 00:01:42:09
How do you go about, like,
00:01:42:15 –> 00:01:47:16
I, I’ve never been to Alaska first off, so, so it was like, okay, I wanna go up there, but there’s a hundred hundred thing.
00:01:47:16 –> 00:01:48:00
So you ordered a
00:01:48:00 –> 00:01:48:09
World. I
00:01:48:09 –> 00:01:51:11
Wanted to see where Alaska was. There you go. Okay. We started with the world We
00:01:51:11 –> 00:01:51:20
Started with.
00:01:51:28 –> 00:01:52:06
Okay.
00:01:54:11 –> 00:01:57:17
Stopped into Jason Adam’s office. So, you know the last, what’s the
00:01:57:17 –> 00:01:59:14
Last one where, alright. Alright, so here we go.
00:02:00:01 –> 00:02:29:12
So basically it was just from beginning to end. We wanted to, we wanted to do a lot of stuff while we were there. We wanted to be able to travel around, see some things. Yeah. We wanted options, you know, hunting options. So we, you know, through the research we found out okay, the 40 mile herd is as big as they’ve seen it. Like, it’s like, you know, bursting right now. Bursting right now, normally 40,000 animals. They think they’re 67 to 75,000 animals right now. And these
00:02:29:17 –> 00:02:29:29
Are baren ground
00:02:29:29 –> 00:03:28:29
Caribou. These are baren ground caribou. Okay. They, they naturally have, they’re a little bit bigger. Once you go up through, you know, from Fairbanks up through the 40 mile herd to the, basically the Alaska range kind of has some of the bigger caribou. You get up into the far, far north Brooks range Carib or the Oh, central Alaska herd or the porcupine herd. They, they say these caribou have a little better genetics. Okay. Yeah. So, you know, chance for a little bit better caribou. But regardless, I, I don’t know that that mattered so much to us in our hunting is Yeah. Is just, you know, what can we do? What can we make happen? We talked to, ended up talking to several guys, biologists, you name it, and the herd’s awesome there. Right. The 40 mile herd was awesome. We’re like, okay, we’re hunting that. What hunt’s available, we can do a fly in that opens up a little bit early, goes a little bit later. Or we can do this drive and hunt with the four wheelers. And so we’re like, let’s try the four wheeler
00:03:28:29 –> 00:03:31:01
Hunt. Yeah. We have a truck. We have four wheel trailer. We got a truck, we have trailer.
00:03:31:07 –> 00:03:32:08
Yeah. So we did a a
00:03:32:08 –> 00:03:39:23
Four. Do you remember, did you odometer it on the way home to know like, how many miles are we talking from? We’re talking southern Utah to, let’s just say
00:03:40:00 –> 00:03:44:22
Toque or something from there. What did I think? 3,400 miles. Oh
00:03:44:22 –> 00:03:47:16
Miles. Oh, not bad. Did you take oil field or
00:03:47:16 –> 00:03:48:13
3,700?
00:03:49:14 –> 00:03:49:23
Yeah,
00:03:49:23 –> 00:03:50:10
We talked about
00:03:50:15 –> 00:03:52:08
About five or 10,000 now. So they’re,
00:03:52:25 –> 00:03:56:12
No literally it needs a, I could, trust me, it needs, it needs an oil change. I was gonna
00:03:56:12 –> 00:04:05:00
Tell you, you oughta just when, since you had it in Alaska, you should have just sold everything. You should have sold the truck, dumped it off the trailer. The ’cause they’re worth way more up there than they are down here. Oh,
00:04:05:00 –> 00:04:05:28
I don’t even know if they’re Oh
00:04:05:28 –> 00:04:06:04
They are.
00:04:06:07 –> 00:04:11:17
And then you would jump on the plane and come home and be like, honey sold much. I had 175,000. I sold it for 30 grand’s.
00:04:11:17 –> 00:04:17:16
Both four wheelers. They’re probably worth two grand more a piece up there. ’cause the shipping and all that up to get stuff up, there’s, yeah,
00:04:17:18 –> 00:04:18:18
It’s tough to get stuff up there.
00:04:18:20 –> 00:04:19:16
So I was like that.
00:04:19:27 –> 00:04:20:10
It would’ve
00:04:20:10 –> 00:04:24:24
Been Adam and I do that. Trust me, one of us is selling trucks, drivers four wheelers side byside
00:04:25:21 –> 00:04:29:02
And pay for the trip. But it did, everything’s a little bit more expensive
00:04:29:10 –> 00:04:30:06
For sure. So there you are.
00:04:30:19 –> 00:04:31:11
So decided
00:04:31:17 –> 00:04:32:06
Dad, mom up there.
00:04:32:14 –> 00:04:32:29
What’s that?
00:04:33:02 –> 00:04:34:17
So they were gonna drive up. There was a plan.
00:04:34:17 –> 00:04:42:18
So we split it up. We didn’t want to have to everybody drive up, everybody drive home. My mom wanted to go fishing. She wanted to, she wanted to go on the scenic tour point.
00:04:42:18 –> 00:04:44:11
They’ve never been there either, right? Mom and dad? No,
00:04:44:11 –> 00:04:47:04
They’d been there fishing. They hadn’t really, you know, cenic hadn’t been,
00:04:47:04 –> 00:04:49:10
They’ve flown up, saw they saw em flew home, Anchorage
00:04:49:13 –> 00:05:08:14
Run down to Kenai or whatever, fish and then fly home. So they’re like, well we’d love to try out some more stuff. So they loaded up, drove up, loaded up all of our gear. So three, four wheelers, like a cargo trailer full of gear, like you name it. We were prepared for anything and everything because of course we’re starting off hunting here. But we knew if that wasn’t gonna work
00:05:08:28 –> 00:05:13:26
Or they quota down the things. Well you got quota things. Yeah. That could close in a matter of days. So you may need to adapt and move. Yes.
00:05:14:04 –> 00:05:24:24
And so it’s not like in your brain, the pressure, the same as your bear hunt, your bear hunting had me freaked out. You’re with, with storms coming in and you know, like, like you
00:05:24:24 –> 00:05:28:17
Can’t see, see something. Well you’re going, you might as well be going to a foreign country. I mean this is, you have, it’s
00:05:28:20 –> 00:05:29:22
Such a big continent. You,
00:05:29:25 –> 00:05:34:08
You got all the gear that you might need. We took, you don’t know if you need chains or Yeah, I mean for your truck. I mean,
00:05:34:11 –> 00:05:40:06
I don’t, we had chains for trucks. We took a raft. We took everything you could think of, dude. Because we don’t know, like we heard about bottom
00:05:40:13 –> 00:05:40:17
Ries,
00:05:40:21 –> 00:05:45:23
You have a lot of rivers that you might have to cross, you know, talking to everybody. You get all this scan,
00:05:45:26 –> 00:05:49:05
Don’t want Yout, get up there and need, need, you need a $400 Raf the
00:05:49:15 –> 00:05:52:00
Cross bumper for your truck in case you get a moose on the way. Yeah.
00:05:52:00 –> 00:06:03:06
I had a Cadillac hit me in the bumper a few, a couple years ago and I’m, I’ve been like, ah, I need to get a new bumper. So finally I was just like, I don’t want to hit a deer in the middle of freaking moose, British Columbia or a moose or something and be stranded. So I’m like,
00:06:03:26 –> 00:06:05:01
Well gutted caribou hunt.
00:06:05:11 –> 00:06:05:24
We’re doing
00:06:05:24 –> 00:06:11:28
It cause is is brings on a lot of new gear, A lot of new fun stuff. But the wife again, we need to have your
00:06:11:28 –> 00:06:18:24
Wife on this podcast dude to reach is amazing. I love that tool. I mean, some of these little things that you just buy for just
00:06:18:29 –> 00:06:27:28
’cause you can use on all these other hunts. I’m using my inReach. It’s, I’m sitting in a blind in Nevada and you’ve got the inReach. I’m like, I can sit here a little longer now because I could get my little fix and
00:06:27:28 –> 00:06:30:17
You know, my little electronics, you know what’s going on. Or
00:06:30:17 –> 00:06:36:17
You just touch base and know that there’s nothing blowing up at the office or at home. Yes. And it just gives you the con. Alright, I’m good out here. Okay.
00:06:36:17 –> 00:06:36:24
I’m good.
00:06:36:24 –> 00:06:40:07
Yeah. Or you can find out there is something blowing up at home and then you’re freaked out. Yeah. Yeah.
00:06:40:09 –> 00:06:40:29
Could go both
00:06:40:29 –> 00:06:43:00
Ways. We, we dealt with that while I was up
00:06:43:00 –> 00:06:43:29
There. You did? Oh yeah.
00:06:43:29 –> 00:06:45:29
Yeah. Jason, you know, you had to run over.
00:06:46:00 –> 00:06:58:07
Tell that story. Well, yeah. So Janet, my, so, so Jeff’s wife and my wife are sisters. Most of you guys know that. So all of a sudden we get this phone call Sunday afternoon and I mean, you know, we’re having a Sunday nap, chilling out doing also. And this
00:06:58:14 –> 00:07:00:02
Is opening day of the caribou hunt. Yeah.
00:07:00:02 –> 00:07:36:08
Opening day. Jeff’s up there, Jeff, Jeff lives, where do you live? Probably five miles away or something. Yeah, maybe a little less. Anyway, a little less. And so we answer this phone and the, the phone’s ringing. It’s Jeff’s wife and she’s screaming, Janna, I need you to answer the phone. She didn’t realize that, you know, we, yeah. It takes a minute to get to the phone, you know, and she’s just screaming. And so we’re like, and she’s like, I need you, Janna, answer the phone. I need you now. Yeah, dude. We jumped in the car. We jumped in Jan’s car in between my house and your house. The speed limit’s. 40 miles an hour. I hit a hundred. No way. Oh no. I hit 116 miles an hour before Jeff’s turnoff.
00:07:36:20 –> 00:07:37:12
Which truck?
00:07:37:14 –> 00:07:37:23
I’d like
00:07:37:23 –> 00:07:42:10
To know which no’s. Janice Dodge Durango. It’s unbelievable that that machine’s unbelievable. You
00:07:42:10 –> 00:07:42:24
Figured it’s
00:07:42:24 –> 00:07:52:17
Got some red line, red line, red line all the way through the gears. He hit 116, rolled in, i, I would say 35, 40 seconds. I don’t know what it was. Yeah, it was, it felt like that.
00:07:52:22 –> 00:07:57:11
Angie was like, I have no idea how they got here. So I felt like I hung up the phone and they were at the door.
00:07:58:03 –> 00:08:13:26
We jumped, we opened the door. I’m like, and Jeff’s kids on the floor. The baby Ashlyn. Yeah. Ashlyn had fallen off the table, cutters eyes rolled in the back of her head, quit breathing, turned white y and it was like, and so, and by then, how old the baby had come two.
00:08:14:03 –> 00:08:16:19
She’s two. Two and a half. Your youngest. Yeah, my youngest.
00:08:16:23 –> 00:08:19:02
So, so, but the ba baby comes two and
00:08:19:14 –> 00:08:20:04
You were there while
00:08:20:04 –> 00:08:33:10
Finally comes while? Well, she comes two, but right before we walk in the door. And so anyway, by the time she had called the ambulance and by the time we wrapped her head around it we’re like, you know, you could call the ambulance off. Yeah. Go to the emergency room. Ambulances take forever to get there
00:08:33:10 –> 00:08:33:27
Anyway. Oh yeah.
00:08:33:27 –> 00:08:34:19
Well, yeah. So you,
00:08:34:22 –> 00:08:35:28
You drive her there as fast. You
00:08:35:28 –> 00:08:57:22
Could drive her there as fast and without spinal injury. Let’s just go, you know, and have her checked out. And they did a brain scan and a few other things. But like she’s, she’s like, literally, literally the eyes rolled in the back of the head turned white, couldn’t breathe, wasn’t breathing. Oh. And so Jana’s a nurse, you know, so just, anyway, yeah. So it was crazy. So I’m like, Jeff, did you hear what happened to your family? Oh yeah. On his inReach getting updates
00:08:57:26 –> 00:09:00:08
And of course, of course the inReach that I get
00:09:00:08 –> 00:09:02:05
Husband, the husband that needs to go on the self-guided care.
00:09:02:13 –> 00:09:08:20
The message that I get is spent most the afternoon in the emergency room. Not good.
00:09:09:04 –> 00:09:10:24
Not good or all is well known or,
00:09:10:24 –> 00:09:16:22
Or she says everything’s good now. But it was scary. That’s it. That’s the message I got.
00:09:17:05 –> 00:09:28:26
Well, and I don’t know what it is. It’s Murphy’s Law just, but my wife and I talk about this like, bad stuff happens when I’m not there. I don’t know. And I know in the fall we’re not a lot. It’s
00:09:28:26 –> 00:09:30:17
Because you’re not there very often. Alright.
00:09:33:03 –> 00:09:48:15
I know, but that’s probably true. But my kids have broken arms and done, my, my daughters have gotten in a car wreck when I was guiding the Henry’s a couple years ago. Got t-boned by people in town and er just, just, just like you did. My wife wife says something’s probably gonna happen. Well and
00:09:48:19 –> 00:10:01:12
Last time we were down here hunting, we were archery hunting deer years ago, while my kids are over at Jason’s house, one kid throws a ball, hits the clock chops off the top of his fingers, just so happened to the same doctor. The cro falls
00:10:01:12 –> 00:10:02:05
Off of our wall
00:10:02:11 –> 00:10:03:04
And scissors him
00:10:03:05 –> 00:10:08:24
And scissors him. I mean, and it’s a heavy freaking metal. Ooh. Big round two footer.
00:10:09:00 –> 00:10:15:04
Amazing. Amazing. That that was all that happened. And and it was like a shard that came off and hit him or something. Hit your arm. It was random Mike.
00:10:15:11 –> 00:10:15:28
Oh, it
00:10:15:28 –> 00:10:17:00
Was a little kid’s wrist
00:10:17:00 –> 00:10:18:27
Heavy that could clock falling 12
00:10:18:27 –> 00:10:27:26
Feet. It just so happened to be the same exact doctor that stitched my kid’s fingers back on is the one that looked at Ashlyn. Like what are the odds to that? But anyway,
00:10:27:26 –> 00:10:34:11
He’s like, you know what you, I’m gonna turn you in for abuse you’s something going on in your house that isn’t healthy for all your kids.
00:10:34:18 –> 00:10:37:14
Luckily 10 years apart, but you know, and yes, D
00:10:37:16 –> 00:10:38:18
C F S is on their way,
00:10:41:03 –> 00:10:58:08
But still. So caribou hunt. We we planned it out. We were, I was nervous about the rain. There’s so many things that you’re thinking about. Okay. So it’s, we know it’s been raining like crazy. It’s forecasted for rain. It’s a quota hunt. So it is likely gonna,
00:10:58:08 –> 00:10:58:28
As soon as the quotas filled
00:10:59:02 –> 00:11:04:18
It, it’s over. Yeah. Like, and they said it’s only like 650 animals or something like that. Yeah. Which I think it’s actually more than that. You
00:11:04:26 –> 00:11:05:20
Mandatory have to check
00:11:05:23 –> 00:11:07:21
’em in. You have to check ’em in. You have to call ’em in. And so
00:11:07:21 –> 00:11:13:04
They just have a quote out of, so 650 animals outta 75,000. That what I’m doing some quick math in my head.
00:11:13:19 –> 00:11:15:00
There’s a lot of polls. Felt
00:11:15:00 –> 00:11:16:12
Like they can shoot a few more than that. But
00:11:16:12 –> 00:11:23:02
Anyway. Yeah. And I think, I think that’s just a number. Some random guy throughout one time I wasn’t, I didn’t check with ’em to say exactly what it was, but I think that’s a
00:11:23:04 –> 00:11:26:17
Modeling, ser modeling computer. So computer modeling, who knows exactly how many animals
00:11:26:17 –> 00:11:29:16
Are out there? So we’re nervous about that. We’re nervous about the rain, we’re nervous about being,
00:11:29:16 –> 00:11:31:04
You gotta check in every day, right On the
00:11:31:04 –> 00:11:34:22
Quota. You’re supposed to check in every day. Like once a day on the quota. Kind
00:11:34:22 –> 00:11:37:10
Like what we do with Montana. Unlimited sheet or bears or
00:11:37:12 –> 00:11:41:00
You’re supposed to Well you have three days from the time we start. No, no, we did. Didn’t have to. Cell
00:11:41:00 –> 00:11:42:27
Service. Kill a couple. Caribou are
00:11:42:27 –> 00:11:58:16
Good. We didn’t need to. Okay. I mean ’cause of course we, we fly in, we land at like two in the morning sleep in hotel dad up. They drove up there, they make it to Alaska. They fish for a couple days. My dad picks us up at the airport. Me and my brother walk off. We jump in, we roll into a hotel. Stay alone. No
00:11:58:18 –> 00:12:01:04
Bearing issues with the trailer. Nothing. Just far out. Nothing.
00:12:01:10 –> 00:12:01:18
ING’s awesome.
00:12:02:01 –> 00:12:04:07
Well we took, trust me, we took everything in. I had everything
00:12:04:07 –> 00:12:05:20
You took bearings, grease, you guys
00:12:05:20 –> 00:12:10:00
Took, but we had stuff gone through replaced. I replaced everything on I before you.
00:12:10:00 –> 00:12:10:25
We even left, left
00:12:10:25 –> 00:12:13:20
Because I, I was like, I just don’t wanna deal with any Well you’re an Alaska
00:12:13:20 –> 00:12:16:26
Injectors. I need new injectors anyway. I know. Let’s
00:12:16:26 –> 00:12:17:28
Put a new tranny in this thing.
00:12:19:00 –> 00:12:24:04
Dude. Dude, you’re thinking everything. You’re like, I don’t wanna deal with it. I just want to fix and be done. So
00:12:24:04 –> 00:12:25:22
Anyway, the wife’s like this for a caribou.
00:12:26:06 –> 00:12:27:02
Yeah. No,
00:12:27:21 –> 00:12:30:25
Trust me honey. But that’s Truck worked for 10 years
00:12:30:25 –> 00:12:31:05
Perfectly.
00:12:31:05 –> 00:12:32:25
Luckily my wife probably. So the best
00:12:32:25 –> 00:12:37:05
Of the future podcast. Alright, so, alright. Yeah. You
00:12:37:05 –> 00:12:38:29
Ready to hunt? You’re there, you get
00:12:38:29 –> 00:13:04:23
Ride. Wake up in the morning. We go in check in to get our, they call it like a registration hunt, right? So we go in and get our registration tags. We have to wait until eight o’clock to get that from the, from fish office. Harvest ticket, all Walmart. And then you print your other ticket offline. Harvest tickets. Harvest tickets. Yeah. The RRC eight 60. But, so anyway, we take off up there. We’re driving up the highway. It’s like a 150 miles, 200 miles to get up to where, where we do the caribou. We’re where kind of
00:13:04:23 –> 00:13:07:04
Intersection. Probably be on the way. They come part of ’em outta the Yukon,
00:13:07:04 –> 00:13:08:08
Right? They’re rolling. You
00:13:08:08 –> 00:13:08:20
Could probably,
00:13:08:21 –> 00:13:10:12
These caribou are rolling down the highway guys.
00:13:10:12 –> 00:13:12:26
You could probably hit Google Earth and see these things coming. Oh
00:13:12:26 –> 00:13:17:06
Dude, you have a live feed. Like if you had an update, you could, oh there’s no doubt. Because you get up on top, like
00:13:17:06 –> 00:13:21:00
The snow tail monitors in Colorado, you could just have like a snow tail video. Yeah. And all of sudden here comes like,
00:13:21:00 –> 00:13:31:19
There’s no kidding. But they got collars on ’em so they know where they’re at. But anyway, so we’re rolling up there. There’s caribou driving past us, like people’s trucks filled. We’re like, come on. Oh, shizz.
00:13:31:24 –> 00:13:32:17
When did it start?
00:13:33:01 –> 00:13:34:22
It started that morning. It started that morning.
00:13:34:25 –> 00:13:35:19
And you were late the morning
00:13:35:19 –> 00:13:36:07
We flew. You
00:13:36:07 –> 00:13:36:28
Were a few hours. We
00:13:36:28 –> 00:13:38:25
Were a little late. Like we’re a few hours late. Basically. You
00:13:38:25 –> 00:13:39:17
Know what, I, we were nine or 10 by now. And
00:13:39:17 –> 00:13:43:12
You, but we’re like, we’re here for 10 days. Like, we weren’t like super, but when
00:13:44:00 –> 00:13:47:05
We’re some GaN fish for Gray Lake. There you go. And maybe shoot a caribou. Alright.
00:13:47:05 –> 00:14:09:18
When we start seeing these caribou rolling down the road, we’re like, oh shit. They’re on the highway. Like they must be here. So we pull up and, and we, we hit this canyon and we can tell there’s, you know, a lot of trucks and trailers and some guys loading up a carou. Okay. We’re hitting it. We jump out, jump on the four wheelers, roll up the road and it’s like, there’s people with fricking dead caribou. Hunter
00:14:09:18 –> 00:14:10:24
Orange. No, hunter orange. What?
00:14:10:25 –> 00:14:12:24
No Hunter orange. No. You don’t have to wear it up.
00:14:12:25 –> 00:14:13:26
Yeah. Bullets everywhere.
00:14:13:26 –> 00:14:39:10
So, but we were warned by the, by the fish and game, like if the caribou are on the highway, you probably will want to wear hunter orange. And a lot of ’em were like, we don’t even go over there on opening morning because if they’re on the highway, it could be a war zone. It could be wor They said on the highway there was 2000 caribou on the highway the day before like that goes through there. And they said, you, you pull up into that and there’s trs Chuck’s parked everywhere.
00:14:39:17 –> 00:14:42:06
Crisscross. And you turned to applesauce. Right. And
00:14:42:06 –> 00:15:00:03
We didn’t, yeah, we didn’t want it. We didn’t really wanna deal with that. Like, we were a little worried about it. So there was this area that you could ride four wheelers into. So that’s, that’s what we wanted to do. So we rode up there and sure enough, we started, when we started getting into the caribou, there were caribou everywhere. But it’s raining the whole time and you’re just like, you don’t know, we didn’t know what we were for
00:15:00:03 –> 00:15:01:09
You. Dunno if it’s it better or if this is the
00:15:01:09 –> 00:15:03:18
Best you’re trying to decide. What are we gonna, what are you holding out for?
00:15:03:23 –> 00:15:07:29
Yeah. Well now’s caribou goal because it’s like, you know, you’re thinking about it and you’re like,
00:15:08:20 –> 00:15:17:19
I get shoot one of these and there’s like hundreds or thousands around like, or this could be over in 10 minutes and we’ve, we’ve gotten a lot to get here and maybe that’s good.
00:15:17:21 –> 00:15:19:07
Yeah. But maybe I should wait a
00:15:19:07 –> 00:15:24:17
Day. We don’t want it to storm in on us. So be honest, we can’t see anything. Three of them right now. We don’t want it to close on
00:15:24:17 –> 00:15:28:02
Us. She’s your brother and your dad. Yes. Three of you. Your mom has flown home.
00:15:28:17 –> 00:15:43:17
She’s gone. She flew in the same time we flew out. You know, or she flew out the same time we flew in. So, so you know, we’re just, all these things we’re like, we just gotta, we gotta kill some caribou. We, you know, one guy’s on the side of the road packing outta carou. Oh, they’re closing this sucker down today. You know, like, we’re like, oh shit.
00:15:43:17 –> 00:15:48:01
And you’re like, is that true or not? Yes. Do I got hours worried about, do I literally have hours
00:15:48:11 –> 00:15:56:07
Bank? This comes from Jeff. He can hold out this guy. He had that rocky mountain sheep. Jeff hunted. He can hunt. Well you, you can hold up. Look, I can
00:15:56:07 –> 00:15:58:01
Hold the best of him. Hold. I can hold out. Yeah.
00:15:58:17 –> 00:15:59:11
I mean if I’ll
00:15:59:11 –> 00:16:00:23
Eat a tag, I’m not afraid of eating the
00:16:00:23 –> 00:16:01:19
Tag. Yes. But at the same time,
00:16:02:00 –> 00:16:08:05
I am not eating a tag up here. I was going, but I was not eating this ta I, dude, we were gonna kill some stuff and I was like,
00:16:08:08 –> 00:16:08:23
Alright,
00:16:09:21 –> 00:16:12:05
It’s just different. So here comes bull. You’re not prepared. Heres bulls, cows,
00:16:12:05 –> 00:16:12:15
Every cow. You’re not
00:16:12:26 –> 00:16:18:20
Prepared. Calves, cows. So you glass we glass this side hill over here, you know, and they’re like, there’s a couple nice bulls in there though. We gotta go
00:16:18:24 –> 00:16:20:07
Out of how many? Oh, there was
00:16:20:13 –> 00:16:28:11
Probably in that group there’s probably 60 caribou in that group. And so we’re like, well let’s go kill some. And so we rode around to try to intercept them. This’s
00:16:28:11 –> 00:16:29:13
The definition of velvet dreams.
00:16:29:29 –> 00:16:31:23
Yeah, exactly. Dude, it really is. Like
00:16:32:09 –> 00:16:32:25
Ve the velvet is
00:16:33:11 –> 00:16:33:23
Gorgeous. Oh,
00:16:34:05 –> 00:16:35:19
Gorgeous vet. And the pitchers that
00:16:35:19 –> 00:16:35:24
Did
00:16:35:27 –> 00:16:42:07
All, we run around there, we park the four wheelers, we take off hiking and that’s probably the biggest mistake you can make. Like it’s to walk,
00:16:42:08 –> 00:16:43:18
Don’t get off the bike. Don’t get off
00:16:43:18 –> 00:16:59:08
The bike. Like, like, ’cause you can’t catch up to them at the fricking You’ve been up like, I don’t know if you’ve been up there, but it’s just round. Everything’s round like long round. You can’t, you can’t catch ’em, dude. And they won’t stop moving. They just move continually forever.
00:16:59:09 –> 00:17:01:09
You need to get in their way and wait for the next big bull to come.
00:17:01:09 –> 00:17:25:19
Yes. We’ll wait for the next group. So anyway, I’m hiking back off that hill and I then I’m stopping. I’m glassing, I’m seeing the side hill, all these caribou pouring over the side hill. I’m like, there’s pretty nice bull. He’s got a lot, a lot of cool stuff on top. Just a neat looking bull. I’m like, I might go hunting him. Me and my dad split up at the time. My dad and my brother. My brother comes over the hill. I, I walk down to the four wheelers. My brother comes down to the hill, I go pick him up, take him back to his wheeler. I’m like, I see a caribou over here. I might just go kill him.
00:17:26:16 –> 00:17:26:26
Was he
00:17:26:26 –> 00:17:32:12
Alone? No, he’s with in a group. He’s with probably 20 to 25 with probably five, six bowls in it.
00:17:32:12 –> 00:17:33:27
How far can you see? Five miles, 10 miles.
00:17:33:29 –> 00:17:34:29
You can see. Well
00:17:35:10 –> 00:17:37:01
I mean, you’re in some mountain. It’s a little rolling.
00:17:37:05 –> 00:17:43:27
Yeah. With the rain and everything, you couldn’t see a long, long ways. But you could see three, four miles if you’re, you know, at the right time. So
00:17:43:27 –> 00:17:45:09
Black dots as far as you can see.
00:17:45:11 –> 00:17:53:14
Yeah. And there’s patches of them, you know, and some of ’em you’re like school’s way. You don’t know if there’s a bull in there worth hunting or not. And it’s gonna take you half the day to ride over there,
00:17:53:14 –> 00:17:58:00
You know. And why would you? Because they’re coming my way or there’s more gonna be coming my way or, yep.
00:17:58:07 –> 00:18:27:13
So, so you see this bull coming and I’m like, huh, I’m gotta go check him out, get a little bit closer. So I ride down right over, get in position and he’s gone on the side hill. I’m like, what the heck? And all of a sudden I start seeing caribou like line out underneath me. I’m like, oh man, they’re right here. I roll up there and freaking sure enough these, all these cows and bulls are coming and, and I see this bull and he’s by far the biggest in the, he’s the biggest bull in the group, you know? And I’m like, and he’s cool looking. And I’m like jumped on. Boom. I just put him down close, close. He was 150 yards.
00:18:27:16 –> 00:18:28:01
Oh dude.
00:18:28:03 –> 00:18:32:02
Ridiculous chip shot. Oh it was, it was ridiculous. Just boom. Done.
00:18:32:08 –> 00:18:34:28
Dark, dark velvet thing. Yeah, the one you black.
00:18:35:03 –> 00:18:35:22
Really dark
00:18:35:22 –> 00:18:39:01
Looking black. I didn’t even know that you got that dark dude. I’m not a
00:18:39:01 –> 00:18:40:14
Character. He was black. They were pretty.
00:18:40:25 –> 00:18:41:01
Oh,
00:18:41:01 –> 00:18:44:22
You are not. And he’s a little bit Oh nice. I’ve been
00:18:44:28 –> 00:18:49:26
Educated. You and Santa are judging, judging reindeer and caribou on the hook.
00:18:51:09 –> 00:18:56:19
He’s a little bit more compact. He’s not that long, long, long main beam, you know what I mean? But he’s, but
00:18:56:29 –> 00:18:58:18
For me, lot of cool points and cup beam. A lot
00:18:58:18 –> 00:18:58:23
Of cool
00:18:58:23 –> 00:19:00:04
Points, tops were good and
00:19:00:05 –> 00:19:04:18
Yep. And a little bit wider than a lot of, even some of the bigger ones than weren’t. As wide as he is, he was a little
00:19:04:18 –> 00:19:10:01
Bit lighter. That’s thing about Carib bear. There’s so many subtleties. Diff just, yes, if there’s that many, you will just wait for the one you like.
00:19:10:01 –> 00:19:17:25
Well, and we were sitting there, so I sat there and my dad and brother finally came over and caught up and sit down and, and we’re chatting and here comes this bull like lone bull while
00:19:17:25 –> 00:19:18:23
You’re standing over your dead
00:19:18:23 –> 00:19:19:28
Bull mom standing over my dead bull and
00:19:19:28 –> 00:19:21:24
He, your brother’s like, I tacked that one.
00:19:22:03 –> 00:19:49:23
And, and so my brother and dad are like, and I’m, I’m about 30 yards from ’em when the bull shows up and I’m like, Hey look, this is awesome. Look. And they look down there and they’re like, oh I don’t know, maybe we should shoot that one. I didn’t hear all the discussion over there. ’cause I, I take the bull and I, so I’m laying down, I’m like, I gotta give ’em a chance. And the bulls kinda acting nervous and anyway, I just give him a minute. But he’s still watching. And finally my dad was just like, boom. Just shoots him. Didn’t even really ask really?
00:19:50:17 –> 00:19:57:29
He just boom done son. This is mine. Yeah. So shoot. So where’s all the people? Where’s all the vehicles, trucks? Is there other people? I mean, well
00:19:57:29 –> 00:20:02:10
Dude, there was people, like a lot of guys that already peeled out of there. But this
00:20:02:10 –> 00:20:03:22
Particular, but this particular draw, you guys had
00:20:03:22 –> 00:20:07:28
Issues. We were up there four wheelers alone. Well, no, not, there were still guys around. There was and
00:20:07:28 –> 00:20:09:12
Bikes. Cross country. Yes.
00:20:09:14 –> 00:20:11:02
Everywhere. Like, just everywhere.
00:20:11:02 –> 00:20:13:14
There’s no, there’s no rules on the bikes per se.
00:20:13:28 –> 00:20:17:28
I mean, I don’t know what other states are like, but if you’ve done a Utah general deer hunt,
00:20:18:06 –> 00:20:18:22
Very similar.
00:20:18:29 –> 00:20:22:02
Very similar. Like Northern, no, I’m not talking about, I’m talking northern.
00:20:22:16 –> 00:20:25:04
Let’s see, that’s a whole new level. Let’s take the cash.
00:20:25:20 –> 00:20:29:25
It felt like it was like the cash or box other county or something. It’s like there’s
00:20:29:25 –> 00:20:33:17
A lot of people plan the only public land unit in northern Utah. Let’s take that. Okay. Yeah.
00:20:33:18 –> 00:20:34:02
Alright.
00:20:34:10 –> 00:20:53:10
So anyway, boom. He dumps ’em, we killed bulls 200 yards apart from each other. And then we were like, they walked up on it and it, you know, it’s, it’s as long as mine, but it does just doesn’t have the length. But it was cool ’cause he’s got like eight inch back scratchers. They’re long, you know what I mean? That’s guy just kind of neat. Like you
00:20:53:15 –> 00:21:00:18
Got big fronts or double shovels, which are rare. And then you got eight inch back scratchers and not as good a tops. But like yeah, there’s no two that even look alike.
00:21:01:00 –> 00:21:02:24
They’re amazing. Amazing that way.
00:21:02:24 –> 00:21:03:22
How different, right? So,
00:21:03:26 –> 00:21:08:18
So you know, we were like, oh man, like what are we gonna hold out for for dust?
00:21:09:02 –> 00:21:10:04
You’re it. Because we’re
00:21:10:04 –> 00:21:10:06
Just,
00:21:10:23 –> 00:21:11:18
We could already see this is
00:21:11:18 –> 00:21:12:02
Gonna be
00:21:12:16 –> 00:21:17:23
An epic, an epic staff reunion. Yeah, we’re gonna do this every year. We’re gonna do something.
00:21:17:23 –> 00:21:18:11
Well I do it.
00:21:18:28 –> 00:21:26:25
It is, I, I’m telling you, if you know what’s happening with the herds, you could do it in two days. You could fly up there. If you don’t, you
00:21:26:25 –> 00:21:27:20
Might take, kill your caribou,
00:21:28:11 –> 00:21:43:12
Drive off, get back and you’re done. Yeah. So we sat there, dusty walked over and tried to get on. We had a couple, we had a herd of like 200, 300 caribou up on a mountain. And there was a couple dandy bull, like big bulls in there. So Dusty went over and was gonna to make play on those. So
00:21:43:12 –> 00:21:45:06
Did you clean your bulls real quick or do yours still hunt?
00:21:45:11 –> 00:21:50:16
I did. No, we’re, well I’m cleaning the bull. My bowl, my dad’s cleaning his bowl and Dusty’s going,
00:21:50:16 –> 00:21:51:17
Took off. Yeah, took off.
00:21:51:17 –> 00:21:56:11
Jeff’s got the rubber gloves clear on up to his armpit and his brother’s looking at which one he’s gonna whack.
00:21:56:13 –> 00:21:58:01
Yeah, there you go. Well, because you
00:21:58:02 –> 00:22:06:16
Got your wheeler pretty closer right to him. I don’t know. Right to him. So you can literally cut ’em in quarters and take all the whole carcass basically Gut it. Gut. I did dude. I threw my whole
00:22:06:18 –> 00:22:10:11
Caribou on my gut. It I got and threw ’em on there. ’cause you gotta take, you know everything
00:22:10:11 –> 00:22:10:22
Alaska
00:22:10:29 –> 00:22:11:10
Gotta
00:22:11:10 –> 00:22:14:06
Take everything. So yeah, just get the guts out and everything else is there isn’t, oh yeah.
00:22:14:16 –> 00:22:24:18
So Dusty goes over, goes up the hill, sees, you know, the bulls just aren’t moving down and it’s wide open. There’s no way he’s gonna get it on ’em without blowing them out. And so I’m watching,
00:22:24:19 –> 00:22:26:01
Is this after, did you make him help you?
00:22:26:15 –> 00:22:28:02
No, I just sent him, just him off. Just
00:22:28:02 –> 00:22:28:17
Him set him
00:22:28:19 –> 00:23:30:04
Go. And so then I, you know, I’m sitting there glassing and here’s some more caribou coming over. Same direction. Mine came. Geez. And, and I’m like, well there’s one pretty good bull in there. So I ride over after we’re watching Dusty for a couple hours waiting for these caribou to come down and they’re just not coming down. There’s too much pressure down there. You can tell they’re just pooling, pooling up up there. So we’re like, okay. So I run over grab Dusty. It’s like, hey you might wanna come look at this other bull. We ride over there and there’s probably 200 caribou in this group. They walk out and there’s 30 bulls maybe. And the bulls are kind of pulled up together. And there’s one that’s obviously, he’s a tank. You know, there’s one that’s bigger on like the one side is amazing. He’s big, he’s everything double shoveled. The other side comes out and he’s just, just like broke off the top of his horn. Like messed up. He’s garbage. So he’s the bull I would’ve killed if he was, if it normal. But, but you know, there’s this one bull and you can tell he’s definitely body horns, everything. He’s bigger double shoveled. And we’re like, okay, we’re killing him. He’s pulled up so tight. Tight.
00:23:30:04 –> 00:23:31:12
What guns are you guys using? Thompson?
00:23:31:15 –> 00:23:35:11
Mark Thompsons. Yeah, we both have, we both have our two 70 Thompsons up there. Okay. And
00:23:35:17 –> 00:23:37:02
You both have two seventies. Yeah.
00:23:37:02 –> 00:24:27:02
Alright. Yep. We each took 40 rounds. It took two. So we brought, so we brought a lot of am home. I love that gun. Love that gun. Thompson does a great class that you can take, learn more about how to, you know, you build your gun with them start to finish. You, you set it up, you see all the parts to setting it up. You, you’re able to grow intimate with that rifle. You’re seeing what it really takes to, to go to a thousand yards. He makes it look too easy. He really does. But literally within a few hours you are taking a gun outta the box, setting it up with a scope that he’s already done the back work on. He’s already done all the, you know, he knows what speed to have that bullet going. He knows everything about it. He’s got multiple different calibers available.
00:24:27:20 –> 00:25:22:01
We chose a two 70. My next gun will be a 33 78 from, from Mark. Awesome. Guns does a, does a great job. Give him a call at 1-800-584-FOUR 0 7 9. Or you can look up, see a bunch of the options that are available at www.thompsonlongrange.com. You can kind of look at all the different options he has on there. All the different guns. So they’re pulled up, you can’t get a shot. They’re jumbled like this. And the big bulls right in the middle of them, like right in the middle, surrounded by all these other bulls. It’s just a sea of horns right there in that group. They walk out onto the side hill. We’re like, shit, we gotta try to get a saw shot. So we run back to the four wheelers. Jump on right over, get in the spot. Dude, this is just a western deer hunt. I mean it’s, it’s just redneck. It is all get out. It’s what it is. And we’re like, well you gotta embrace it for whatever it is. Yeah. You know. Well
00:25:22:02 –> 00:25:24:18
It’s gonna be close it down in a day or two. You’re
00:25:24:18 –> 00:25:42:17
Done. There’s two guys. One of ’em is from Utah in fact, but there’s an Air Force base and all the Air Force guys love hunting. Right. So they’re all up there crushing the place. Well these two guys park and they take off hiking and I don’t know how far they hiked, but they were gone. These caribou almost run over their four wheelers. I mean they run with it a hundred yards of their four wheeler.
00:25:42:17 –> 00:25:45:02
You’re using the four wheeler as a rest for the ride flag.
00:25:45:26 –> 00:25:46:05
Dude
00:25:46:05 –> 00:25:49:17
Leaving a note on the handlebar. Thanks boss. There’s a, here’s a tenderloin.
00:25:51:25 –> 00:26:05:04
Like they walk out on this hill, 450 yards. We watch ’em for 10 minutes. We still can’t get a shot. They’re pulled up too tight. Like sh they walk around the ridge, we ride over, ride up on the mountain, you know, and we’re looking down and on the bikes.
00:26:05:08 –> 00:26:07:02
On the bikes. You’re going around them in the bikes. Yes.
00:26:07:02 –> 00:26:26:04
Getting in front of them. And so we ride up, get to a point where we can take off hiking and, and get down to a point where sure enough they just come walking right in front of us. This, this time they’re on a little bit steeper. They kind of thin out and they line out. Yeah. String out. And then we’re just like, okay, okay. And so we’re just doing the Okay. Clear shoot. Okay. Nope. Okay. Clear shoot. And there’s
00:26:26:05 –> 00:26:26:17
One bull
00:26:26:17 –> 00:26:32:29
You want. There’s one bull that we really want. And so anyway, waited until the bull was clear. Just done. We’re done. It was a matter.
00:26:33:02 –> 00:26:34:29
Yours is back five hours. Yours is back at the truck
00:26:35:02 –> 00:26:43:14
Now. He, not even back at the truck. Still tied up on the four wheeler. Just gutted. Thrown on the four wheeler waiting. And then we both took the one four wheeler over. Oh, I gotcha. And used
00:26:43:14 –> 00:26:44:10
Him as a decoy.
00:26:44:27 –> 00:26:47:29
You could have, could have. But you don’t need one
00:26:47:29 –> 00:26:49:08
That’s, that one looks sick.
00:26:50:28 –> 00:27:04:10
You know. And I will say like, the locals were like, I don’t know how you guys got so lucky to come up here on this year. This is like, they called it the National Geographic Day. Like it’s not always like this. You know, we usually ride
00:27:04:16 –> 00:27:06:08
3, 4, 3
00:27:06:08 –> 00:27:09:18
Or four days usually. Usually we have to drive 20 miles and only see
00:27:09:18 –> 00:27:13:26
230, 40 miles and we see two or three bulls that we’d even shoot.
00:27:13:28 –> 00:27:14:18
Oh really? Yeah.
00:27:14:18 –> 00:27:18:11
Yeah. And they’ll kill a dink bull. You know what I mean? ’cause they’ll just kill whatever. Well
00:27:18:11 –> 00:27:18:25
That’s awesome.
00:27:19:03 –> 00:27:21:26
But so this year it was just like the, the caribou were on the highway.
00:27:21:26 –> 00:27:26:13
This fishing was, this fishing was terrible in Alaska compared to other years. Oh,
00:27:26:13 –> 00:27:28:02
Collectively I’ve heard that collectively.
00:27:28:05 –> 00:27:41:04
It’s terrible. Yeah, I’ve that my kids went up there, you know, with their grandpa and it was tough that they did, you know, Sean did catch a 25 pound king. So it’s kind of a highlight of his trip. But fishing was terrible. Caribou was off the charts. Off the charts.
00:27:41:04 –> 00:27:47:00
So you’re gonna inspire a lot of guys to go up there and they’re not gonna have the same experience. Well, and that’s what I worry about is you need to know what you’re doing. You gotta do it
00:27:47:00 –> 00:27:48:04
Twice. You gotta tell your wife.
00:27:48:05 –> 00:27:49:04
Well and you gotta have a
00:27:49:04 –> 00:27:51:07
Backup plan. Gotta try to make sure that it wasn’t just a Yeah.
00:27:51:07 –> 00:27:51:17
Don’t
00:27:51:17 –> 00:27:51:24
Luck
00:27:51:24 –> 00:28:00:28
Deal. Yeah, you can’t, you don’t think you can go up in a hundred percent bank on that hunt. ’cause in a day they could, those herds can move on. And you’re back to seven days of riding
00:28:01:03 –> 00:28:04:26
Four wheelers back. So got three caribou. Tell us about the meat. So then processes.
00:28:05:20 –> 00:28:18:05
Oh it, they were so loaded because the caribou ride on the nobody process. Nobody take it like, oh no. They were like, well I can, I, we can, I can take the in but I don’t know when I’m gonna get it to you. Okay. It could be three weeks. And we’d be shipping, did you guys,
00:28:18:16 –> 00:28:20:05
You’d take a freezer and stuff up. What’d you take
00:28:20:05 –> 00:28:27:12
In here? So we went in, we we went to Walmart, went in Walmart and Fairbanks. There was a $230 freezer. Boom. Bought it, took it back to camp.
00:28:27:17 –> 00:28:28:11
You had a generator?
00:28:28:14 –> 00:28:29:05
We had a generator
00:28:29:05 –> 00:28:31:28
You brought up. ’cause you might need some air tools to fix whatever.
00:28:32:07 –> 00:28:37:14
Exactly. Dude, all you, you know us Jason. Yeah. You know us. This, it could be a possible, might need to use
00:28:37:14 –> 00:28:38:16
The air wrench to change a tire.
00:28:38:20 –> 00:28:40:11
So instead of using the star wrench by hand,
00:28:40:11 –> 00:28:43:26
We’re using the air wrench with this generator. So
00:28:43:29 –> 00:28:45:18
You laugh about that. We had a, so we
00:28:45:18 –> 00:28:47:26
Started the generator. The generator didn’t stop.
00:28:48:13 –> 00:28:57:25
Didn’t stop. We for the next, we cranked that. So we chopped up the, we chopped up our caribou freaking threw in there. Well we had to kind, you gotta separate ’em because it takes too long to freeze you the big
00:28:57:25 –> 00:28:58:18
Muscles. Yeah.
00:28:58:23 –> 00:29:03:05
While we’re talking about that, Jeff, I just wanna bring up, did you happen to use the outdoor edge knife on your caribou?
00:29:03:22 –> 00:29:04:06
Absolutely, I did.
00:29:05:08 –> 00:29:05:20
What’d
00:29:05:20 –> 00:29:10:02
You think? Okay. Well you remember, you’re breaking a, you’re, you’re, you’re breaking the caribou. This is the epic down
00:29:10:02 –> 00:29:11:08
Epic series. Probably had a little epic.
00:29:11:14 –> 00:29:11:23
Epic.
00:29:11:27 –> 00:29:13:07
It was the epic logo on it.
00:29:13:07 –> 00:29:23:17
Epic logo got Caribou Gore on it for every part of it. But, but basically you’re breaking a, you have to break ’em all the way down, you know, I mean when you kill somebody Alaska,
00:29:23:17 –> 00:29:24:16
You’re breaking many blades. Did you use
00:29:24:16 –> 00:29:43:26
Or I went through, I mean a couple blades honestly, from the, from beginning to end, I went through three blades. That’s from, well you’re from cutting them, gutting them, cape them, de-boning ’em all, de-boning ’em. I went through three blades. So yeah. So, you know, I had to separate, froze ’em all. And then we tore Alaska. We drove from one in Alaska to the, the other. Just checking everything out. We went. I want to see. Okay,
00:29:43:26 –> 00:29:48:17
You went up to the areas that you might’ve had to hunt? Yes. Had this area closed in two or three days. Went
00:29:48:17 –> 00:29:50:29
We had a bow with us north so north. So if we went up and we wanted
00:29:50:29 –> 00:29:52:07
Zone the boat Off the hall road. Yeah.
00:29:52:08 –> 00:30:21:17
Off the hall road. We wanted to check that out. Dude, it’s doable. We saw, we saw nice bull 150 yards off the road that sat there and watched us like, like the hall road archery hunt is doable. Yeah. Like, and that’s what I wanted to see. I’m like, is it really doable to kill one off there? Oh it’s doable. Yeah. Like I don’t think that, of course we didn’t see quantities, the numbers like we saw down there, you know, we only saw probably seven, eight bulls. But dude, we drove there. We drove up past out of the, out of the Brooks. Drove up another 30, 40 miles and then turned on the North Slope
00:30:21:17 –> 00:30:23:26
Campus. The north slope. But still south. Still
00:30:23:26 –> 00:30:27:18
South of Dead Horse. Bay dead horse. Yeah, because Dead Horse and PTO Bay aren’t very far. Like
00:30:27:18 –> 00:30:29:24
It’s Ccle Brooks is on the end of the earth.
00:30:30:22 –> 00:30:35:10
We drove that. That was my first all sheep was out. Happy Valley. Just south of Dead Horse. Not very far.
00:30:35:20 –> 00:30:36:11
On the North slope.
00:30:36:21 –> 00:30:40:26
Oh, on the north slope. Yeah. Yep. That’s where my first one came from. So
00:30:40:29 –> 00:30:50:29
It was wild seeing all the country. I mean it was amazing. We, but it was like, like we saw big grizzly bears. We saw a wolverine doll, sheep everywhere.
00:30:51:02 –> 00:30:52:02
Did you take grizzly spray?
00:30:52:15 –> 00:30:55:18
What’s that? I mean, oh yeah dude, we had bear spray. You had a whole
00:30:55:19 –> 00:30:59:14
What about pistols? You guys were talking about pistols and I’m like, how did you, did you take those through Canada?
00:31:00:02 –> 00:31:01:26
Oh no, no. We flew ’em all up there.
00:31:02:03 –> 00:31:02:28
Flew your pistols
00:31:03:05 –> 00:31:09:25
In there. And then your dad flew home. Right. And then my dad flew home. He take the pistols from Fairman. He he flew the pistols home. Yeah. You tried to get that into Canada?
00:31:10:09 –> 00:31:13:24
No, it ain’t happening. It ain’t happening. The borders were So you guys
00:31:13:29 –> 00:31:20:10
Had pistols, rifles, bow. Yes. Generators, air tools, freezers, air compressors, you name
00:31:20:10 –> 00:31:20:13
It.
00:31:21:03 –> 00:31:23:08
Extra tires, new bumper for the front truck.
00:31:23:20 –> 00:31:28:18
How extra tires for everything. And how long did the caribou hunt last from the time the first trigger was pulled to the third,
00:31:28:23 –> 00:31:29:26
I don’t know, maybe four to five hours.
00:31:30:16 –> 00:31:32:06
And then you went fishing, right? Oh, then
00:31:32:11 –> 00:31:40:26
We went salmon dude, we had time and we had food. Oh yeah. Like we’re loaded. Like we had, we took, we had all this freeze dried stuff and everything. We’re like, we’re just gonna your
00:31:40:26 –> 00:31:44:04
Around dad stay with you for that turnaround. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. So it was you three. That’s an awesome.
00:31:44:08 –> 00:31:46:07
So he, he flew home father, we flew him home. But then
00:31:46:07 –> 00:31:46:14
You drove
00:31:46:25 –> 00:31:49:12
And then me and Dusty drove, made it home in three days. So it was good.
00:31:49:14 –> 00:31:54:04
Went down head over to Whitehorse, Yukon and all the way down through BC and then the Albert,
00:31:54:04 –> 00:31:57:24
How about that extra fuel tank for that? You put a transportation tank? I have to have it. Was it awesome?
00:31:57:29 –> 00:31:58:13
Awesome.
00:31:58:13 –> 00:32:00:17
Loved, loved it to through Canada. All those long old
00:32:00:17 –> 00:32:05:01
Roads. Well and you don’t know. And we even had to refill it a couple times in Canada, you know what I mean? Because it’s,
00:32:05:10 –> 00:32:13:23
But still, you get in a spot and you go up. Our power’s out here, pumps are down. Yeah. Wow. I You don’t camp there for 24 hours to wait and forget. You Don’s have to
00:32:14:00 –> 00:32:15:01
Hundred gallons go to
00:32:15:01 –> 00:32:20:00
Cold foot Alaska and the gas is five 50 a gallon. You know what I mean? Yeah. Like
00:32:20:04 –> 00:32:21:25
You paid for the transfer tank. Oh,
00:32:22:04 –> 00:32:23:22
Oh yeah. Just in the gas area. Yeah. Three
00:32:23:22 –> 00:32:27:06
Or four times over. And, and it’s something we can use on the farm and everything anyway. So it’s not like,
00:32:27:13 –> 00:32:32:08
So what do you figure, do you know like roughly what is it, if a guy’s gonna drive, not buy all the extra car.
00:32:32:08 –> 00:32:33:17
You’re not, you’re not doing that. But if you’re
00:32:33:17 –> 00:32:35:23
Gonna drive, how much is it gonna cost you in fuel?
00:32:36:20 –> 00:32:37:25
How much it cost? Or three grand.
00:32:38:00 –> 00:32:43:14
Three grand in fuel is what we spent piece. Oh three fuel. A thousand dollars a piece is what we were Yeah. For fuel. For fuel up
00:32:43:21 –> 00:32:44:19
For a truck up and back.
00:32:45:05 –> 00:32:51:01
And then, and then you know, you bought, well you probably had use for the freezer anyway. Can’t, I mean there’s things, well
00:32:51:01 –> 00:33:03:24
And there’s like the, you know, and I, you know, I bought the bumper, I bought all this stuff and I, so I spent a bunch money on that stuff. But that’s all stuff I’m gonna the inner each and everything. Okay. I blew some money on that stuff. I’m not gonna use it forever. Right. That’s not But if you’re not gonna do the hunt, all
00:33:03:24 –> 00:33:04:12
Told what are you end
00:33:04:12 –> 00:33:08:07
Into that. You’re not gonna do the hunt for under 3,500. There’s no way you’re gonna do it for under 35.
00:33:08:16 –> 00:33:17:23
That’s what, by the time you get your airfare, even if you’re flying up, you air tail a couple hotels here and there. Bad days coconut guys, you’re hunting license and your caribou tech caribou is what, six, 800 bucks Now
00:33:17:23 –> 00:33:20:07
You’re 800. You’re like 840 bucks by
00:33:20:10 –> 00:33:20:26
Plus your license
00:33:21:10 –> 00:33:22:06
Caribou. Yeah. Yeah.
00:33:22:06 –> 00:33:28:06
Your license is one 60. So you’re almost a grand just in a hunting license in one caribou tag. You’re, and maybe you got a wolf tag or
00:33:28:06 –> 00:33:34:01
Do that. I should have gave you my use bear tag and let you freaking kill me. A caribou. Okay. That we
00:33:34:01 –> 00:33:39:03
Could have had. That’s illegal. If there were 20 guys with me, we could’ve all killed decent bulls. Wow. It didn’t matter. Yeah.
00:33:39:17 –> 00:33:39:29
The year you
00:33:40:04 –> 00:33:49:17
Per all my dad was sitting there and we were over killing Dusty’s caribou. Like the herd that we were waiting to have come off the mountain. Came off the mountain right by. And they walked within 200 yards. He had a thousand carib. Where
00:33:49:17 –> 00:33:55:06
Are they going? Where do they end up? What do they, what do they migrate? They’re just going, they migrate for what timing of the year. What do they migrate to? The wintering.
00:33:55:06 –> 00:33:57:01
They’re, what’s the state? I think they’re just naturally wired
00:33:57:15 –> 00:33:58:08
To walk. To
00:33:58:08 –> 00:34:05:25
Walk. And they don’t stop. They, they’re like a, they’re like a kid on a sugar rush. They’re just aggressively walking. Do they even? And then they stop for an hour
00:34:06:02 –> 00:34:06:15
And feed
00:34:06:26 –> 00:34:09:02
And feed, lay down and then
00:34:09:08 –> 00:34:10:02
Get up and they’re on the move.
00:34:10:03 –> 00:34:10:19
Get up and they’re on
00:34:10:19 –> 00:34:11:11
The, did you see wolves?
00:34:11:14 –> 00:34:38:25
Never saw a wolf. No. The there you can kill up to 10 without a tag. You don’t even have to have a tag then check in. But once you have to kill 10, you gotta, you gotta go, you gotta go get a tag. So you don’t even need a tag. Kill ’em. But we talk to the locals, very tough wolf hunting there. They’re guys been out there. They hunt moose and caribou every year and they’ve seen one in 20 years. You know what I mean? Wow. It’s pretty tough. But they have but they’re thick from what I understand. They’re just, they’re just
00:34:38:29 –> 00:34:44:07
Sabb. So now what, what’s, what’s on the schedule now? You’re home happy. Your dad’s got a sheep tag. I mean, I don’t know what’s on
00:34:44:17 –> 00:34:48:13
Schedule. Yeah. So I got a elk hunt coming up that I’m helping a buddy with. Oh, what
00:34:48:13 –> 00:34:49:21
About that Montana one? You,
00:34:50:08 –> 00:34:54:13
That one’s coming right after that one. So I’m going muzzle loader hunting with end for, you’re gonna
00:34:54:15 –> 00:34:58:05
Mere hunt towards the end of the archery hunt in Montana, right? Yes. Early
00:34:58:05 –> 00:34:59:15
October 1st. Like what? Six
00:34:59:15 –> 00:35:01:02
We heard season and then at the very end
00:35:01:06 –> 00:35:04:17
You get a lot of the people that clear out toward that end of first October. The 1st of October.
00:35:04:27 –> 00:35:09:06
So what are you doing from now till the Utah muzzle elk hunt. Yeah. Chilling. Be careful what
00:35:09:06 –> 00:35:11:06
You say. Office work. Be careful what you say.
00:35:11:08 –> 00:35:12:13
I’ve got a lot of office work to catch up on.
00:35:13:00 –> 00:35:17:11
’cause Jason’s, he’s looking for spotter. Where? Where there’s no, where there’s no deer.
00:35:18:20 –> 00:35:18:26
Oh,
00:35:19:18 –> 00:35:23:13
I know. I, I’m in. But, but no. So now I get to, there’s
00:35:23:13 –> 00:35:24:27
Five deer. There’s there’s five
00:35:25:27 –> 00:35:27:06
And you might want one of
00:35:27:06 –> 00:35:28:05
Them 20 square miles.
00:35:28:27 –> 00:35:30:07
Anyway. Alright. That’s
00:35:30:07 –> 00:35:31:09
A long goal. So yeah.
00:35:31:09 –> 00:35:33:19
Awesome. Adam, that’s an awesome Adam trip. Adam, I’m actually ready. What’s up to
00:35:33:20 –> 00:35:35:28
You? I know you’ve got a little bit of guidance coming up with
00:35:36:07 –> 00:36:16:17
Yeah, I got a bunch of sheep now. I don’t have any, I, you know, with Matt Hunt that I had planned this year, I stayed clear of all the archery. I I would, if I knew I had a crystal ball I was gonna kill, I killed him on the evening of day five. Came home three or four days early. I, I wouldn’t have missed much of the, the general deer hunt. I wish I would’ve got an archery hunt ’cause I’m Johnson Johnson. Yeah. I’m just fired up. You know, you, you’re fired. Gimme the next thing you have. You know, just like you Jeff, gimme the next, you know, and then you’re gonna get humbled for 10 days and like okay I’m back to the real world. That’s probably what would really happen. But I don’t have a, a personal tag now for about a month. And so kids got things coming up. Yeah, I’ve got some the end of September. But a bunch of sheep guiding. It’s
00:36:16:17 –> 00:36:20:08
The sheep guiding is what’s gonna be awesome. That’s what it’s gonna lay some big old sheep down’s. What?
00:36:20:08 –> 00:36:39:13
Yeah, Nevada, Utah. So that’s what I’m doing here and it’s tempered the, you know, we left in 106 or eight degree heat and went up there and froze my butt off and now it’s you about a hundred and some of these desert areas, it’s 98 to a hundred, which is palatable. Totally doable and raining. And so yeah, looking forward to that.
00:36:39:27 –> 00:36:40:12
Alright,
00:36:40:19 –> 00:36:41:01
Sounds
00:36:41:01 –> 00:36:43:14
Good. What about you Jay? Oh, you haven’t really said much about archery.
00:36:43:14 –> 00:36:55:05
Archery, deer in around here and then archery elk in New Mexico possibly. Depends on how these hunts go. So anyway, and then Colton’s got an antelope punt starts mid-September,
00:36:55:16 –> 00:36:56:06
September 15th,
00:36:56:06 –> 00:36:59:29
Right? Yep. Here in Utah. And then it just, it’s
00:37:00:09 –> 00:37:00:29
One after another.
00:37:01:09 –> 00:37:05:28
Back mayhem after that. So anyway, you get a few kids and they’re, they’re needy. They’re
00:37:05:28 –> 00:37:09:13
Needy. John, what are you up to right now? You got dedicated? Yeah,
00:37:09:13 –> 00:37:14:19
I got dedicated. Did dedicated hunter project. All which three planted some bitter brush and stuff like that.
00:37:14:26 –> 00:37:17:04
So are you gonna go out and bow hunt a little bit or have you been yet?
00:37:17:05 –> 00:37:18:24
No, I don’t think so. I think I’m going to
00:37:19:17 –> 00:37:20:02
Muzzle and rifle.
00:37:20:06 –> 00:37:22:11
Yeah. And then it’s a war zone. Been doing a lot of,
00:37:22:14 –> 00:37:23:05
Don’t feel bad. It’s
00:37:23:05 –> 00:37:44:06
A, a lot of stuff in the office. We’re upgrading our website a lot. So we’re working on that. Guys will see that, you know, probably the year in November and also been, we’ve added maps to our website and so we’ve been selling a lot of maps and answering a lot of questions. Pretty cool. Guys can get maps that have the, the units, you know, printed right on the maps. They’re waterproof
00:37:44:14 –> 00:37:51:12
And centered on your, you know, if we’ve, if we all bought B L M maps for seven or 10 bucks here and then they’re the paper ones, they’re non waterproof. There’s four
00:37:51:12 –> 00:37:52:01
Of them to cover your
00:37:52:01 –> 00:38:02:01
Unit. But inevitably the area you were looking at is on the seam of about four of ’em and it drives you nuts. And so these unit maps we’ve tuned up with my topo centers it and
00:38:02:29 –> 00:38:04:28
Slaps an epic logo on, which is awesome.
00:38:05:11 –> 00:38:10:22
Yeah, if you wanna get that, just go to our website, click on services, go to the map center and, and follow the instructions.
00:38:10:25 –> 00:38:15:01
And you can get topographical seven and a half minute one in 24,000 maps as well. So
00:38:15:02 –> 00:39:00:08
One of the, one of the greatest ways to do it is you go in and you choose GM U. So you find your unit first and then you can either get the standard one that’s one to 100,000 or you can click if you find your unit. And then right on the, on the left hand side on the bottom it’ll say customize this map. Then you can go in and you can choose, you know, tons of different stuff. You know you’re gonna be in a certain drainage, you can kind of, well you can do even hone in center. Yeah. And and the biggest ones on there are one to to 50,000. Yeah. And you can choose satellite overlays. You can choose satellite overlays with topographic lines. Yeah. And it, it’s just awesome. Lots of customization. You can get maps five feet wide by eight feet tall if you want. I mean,
00:39:00:27 –> 00:39:01:24
Well, whatever you want.
00:39:01:24 –> 00:39:04:00
Well for Jeff’s caribou hunt, you might’ve needed that.
00:39:04:00 –> 00:39:04:13
They’re 48
00:39:04:13 –> 00:39:04:29
Inches but
00:39:05:07 –> 00:39:10:20
It covered, that would cover about a 16th of Alaska. That, that five by six foot map.
00:39:11:03 –> 00:39:13:22
Tons of options on the custom maps. Okay.
00:39:14:07 –> 00:39:17:00
All right guys. Well we’re about podcasted out aren’t
00:39:17:02 –> 00:39:18:11
I think so. Time for lunch.
00:39:19:06 –> 00:39:41:02
Oh yeah, let’s do that. So anyway, appreciate everybody. Keep in mind and we do get a lot of messages in here. Ask for Jeff first for the next three weeks. Well, and then Adam and I do try to take care of our messages, but we, it is our hunting season and it’s brutal. We’re out in the field a lot. But we’ll do the best we can to help you out on anything that you got going in which, any questions? Yeah,
00:39:41:02 –> 00:40:06:17
Hopefully patient. We have started, Jason, I yesterday got calls from people in some of these states, Arizona and Utah and Nevada. We’ve heard of a few people getting reissued tags. We re, we realize if you get a call from a state and it’s a tag of, of you know, that’s awesome and you wanna take it, you may be trying to get ahold of us, realize that, that the gals that we have up front, they can get an epic member experience list to you. Quick get that going. If you need an outfit or recommendation, obviously you’re
00:40:07:10 –> 00:40:08:17
Here. Ier Adam can help you.
00:40:08:17 –> 00:40:15:11
Yeah, we can help you do that. One of us will most likely, we’ll do our best realizing we’re out doing what we like to do and hopefully you’re all doing the same. That’s
00:40:15:11 –> 00:40:17:08
Right. Okay. Sounds good. Good luck to everybody. I.
