00:00:01:05 –> 00:00:03:12
I feel a little crowded on the second season. I
00:00:03:12 –> 00:00:05:12
Don’t wanna hoard points. I wanna hunt.
00:00:05:23 –> 00:00:13:29
Great opportunity for drawing odds. Our members draw a large portion of the Idaho sheep tags every year. Anything to do with Western big Games.
00:00:17:08 –> 00:00:20:26
Welcome to the Epic Outdoors Podcast, powered by Under Armour.
00:00:21:13 –> 00:00:44:14
Hey everybody. Jason Carter. Adam Bronson. John Peterson. Chris Peterson, as well as Devin. How you doing, Devin? Good, good, good. Well, we’re all meeting here in Chris’s office. There’s less than a hundred people in here so we can meet together. That’s right. Our governor came out and said we shouldn’t meet in groups of a hundred or more because of the coronavirus. Do you guys have the coronavirus? ’cause if you do, I’m gonna invite you to step out. Huh?
00:00:44:20 –> 00:00:46:19
Pretty sure. We’ve already had it twice this morning.
00:00:46:19 –> 00:00:51:25
We’ve been over this. I, yeah. You guys have already had it. I survived, I think. And even if we did have it, we’re all
00:00:51:26 –> 00:00:56:01
Stronger. We’re all stronger because of it. I’m pretty sure we had it at least twice through the office thinking our
00:00:56:03 –> 00:01:05:07
Lucky stars that we had it. Yeah. If you had it, do you still have it to tate it to others? No. Or does it go away?
00:01:05:18 –> 00:01:08:18
It’s like a snake bite. You build up immunity now you’re stronger.
00:01:08:24 –> 00:01:11:24
Okay. Survived. Well anyway, anybody out there that’s, it’s
00:01:11:24 –> 00:01:13:04
Like Kelly Clarkson says,
00:01:13:27 –> 00:01:14:24
What does she say?
00:01:16:07 –> 00:01:19:23
What does she say? What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Oh,
00:01:20:01 –> 00:01:22:24
I don’t know. That might be Bronson. You’re more of a Beyonce, right?
00:01:23:15 –> 00:01:26:24
No, that was, that was you and Wyatt, if you remember. Oh yeah,
00:01:26:24 –> 00:01:27:05
That’s right.
00:01:28:08 –> 00:01:28:14
So,
00:01:29:05 –> 00:01:29:12
So
00:01:29:12 –> 00:01:57:11
Anyway, anyway. Anybody out there that’s suffering from the coronavirus, besides economically, we feel bad for you. We feel bad economically as well. May even hit the hunting world. I don’t know. People are shutting down. Bronson like when you don’t trade money and everybody stays in their house, things shut down. Money needs to be trading hands. Jason Aldean’s on in Instagram right now telling everybody he can’t finish out his tour.
00:01:57:19 –> 00:02:05:12
Doesn’t matter what it is. You know, N B A or college sports or high school sports now hitting Utah, shut down for two weeks.
00:02:05:17 –> 00:02:08:06
Home loans are getting harder and harder to come by
00:02:08:21 –> 00:02:28:17
Spring break. People are encouraged to not even go on spring break. ’cause you’re gonna go on all corners of the world and bring stuff back. It’s just bad time. N C A March Madness. They’re calling it March sadness now. I saw on the, jeez, I’m serious. Just saw that. No, I just saw that it was Houston Rodeo canceled. Come on. Houston Rodeo. Wow. That’s a, that’s a like
00:02:28:17 –> 00:02:29:28
A, didn’t even know they did one 20
00:02:29:29 –> 00:02:34:10
Day, 20 day, 20 more days. Rodeo. Yeah. Where’s, well, I mean, who,
00:02:34:10 –> 00:02:34:18
Come on. Why
00:02:35:00 –> 00:02:38:04
Come join us. But that beats the Ute stampede by, you know, what’s few
00:02:38:04 –> 00:02:46:11
Days? What I think’s funny about Wyatt not joining us. He must be scared that he’s gonna get the coronavirus from us in our work environment. I don’t
00:02:46:11 –> 00:02:49:23
Know. He’s, it’s the first time he’s passed on
00:02:49:23 –> 00:02:55:14
One this. He’s lock himself into his room and acting like he’s working. And it’s bugging me a little. We should give WWE a call. What
00:02:55:14 –> 00:02:57:01
Do you think? Give him a call. Bring him up.
00:02:57:08 –> 00:03:03:23
All right, here we go. Let’s see if he’ll even answer his phone if he doesn’t answer.
00:03:06:09 –> 00:03:06:19
Hello?
00:03:07:12 –> 00:03:08:02
What are you doing?
00:03:08:29 –> 00:03:10:12
I’m working on New Mexico.
00:03:11:11 –> 00:03:11:19
Well,
00:03:12:04 –> 00:03:14:19
You’re live on the Epic Outdoors Podcast. How
00:03:14:19 –> 00:03:15:00
Are you doing?
00:03:15:18 –> 00:03:16:12
Good. Good.
00:03:17:00 –> 00:03:20:10
I don’t understand why you don’t wanna be with us over here. Why you,
00:03:20:19 –> 00:03:24:23
Somebody has to work where you guys play all the time. You’ve already went for fish today.
00:03:25:14 –> 00:03:25:29
Come on.
00:03:26:17 –> 00:03:28:13
Had you an hour long lunch break then.
00:03:29:17 –> 00:03:34:11
Who’s counting? What? Did you go to Brad’s?
00:03:35:01 –> 00:03:43:18
No, I went and got a tropical smoothie right here. ’cause it’s two minutes away so I can get back here in call New Mexico. So our guys get taken care of. Well,
00:03:43:18 –> 00:03:45:24
Who, who came in before the other guys this morning?
00:03:46:00 –> 00:03:46:23
It’s getting deep.
00:03:47:02 –> 00:03:48:19
Who came in before the other guys? You,
00:03:48:25 –> 00:03:55:11
You guys do work hard and do come in early. So, I mean, I can’t really say I hold a candlestick, but I just like to give you crap. Guess
00:03:55:15 –> 00:04:01:17
I’m just, I’m just wondering if you were afraid you’re gonna get the coronavirus if you had to quarantine yourself over there. Is that what this is
00:04:01:17 –> 00:04:01:24
About?
00:04:02:10 –> 00:04:06:06
I never know what shady joints you gonna go to for lunch.
00:04:08:08 –> 00:04:13:01
There’s a few holes in the wall lunch spots that we visit. That’s true. Well,
00:04:13:01 –> 00:04:27:00
Look at it. Let’s bring your coat in the winter time. They have enough pepper sauce on it that usually kills most viruses and bacteria. If you eat enough salsa or tomato based or pepper based sauce, feed
00:04:27:00 –> 00:04:31:07
Mexican food will be the last stuff you get sick on. No question. That’s it’s gonna burn it outta your system.
00:04:31:29 –> 00:04:34:14
Probably the advice and everything involved in it, you’re probably okay.
00:04:34:28 –> 00:04:48:18
I have do have a question for you. Yeah, we’ve been kind of a couple of ’em actually, kind of wondering. Yeah, I’ll, I’ll lead off with this one and then we’ll let you know. These guys have another couple questions, but we’re just wondering your significant other. Okay. She’s, she’s a nurse, right?
00:04:49:23 –> 00:04:50:07
Correct.
00:04:50:24 –> 00:05:15:28
Okay. And so she’s probably ex, ex extra prone to getting the coronavirus meaning like, ’cause she’s, she’s serving and giving, you know what I mean? She’s, she’s in sick areas helping people that are sick. And I’m just wondering how that’s gonna affect your relationship. Are you telling her that you need a 30 day reprieve from visiting or, or anything like that? How are you two gonna move forward with the coronavirus?
00:05:17:00 –> 00:05:18:24
I haven’t really thought about that. I guess
00:05:19:14 –> 00:05:26:04
I think it’s important that you need to cover some of those issues in your relationship. What do you think? Okay.
00:05:26:07 –> 00:05:33:12
I might might have to hit her up and just kind of, kind of say, Hey nurse, you know, she doesn’t act too worried about it, so I don’t think I should be too worried about it. Okay.
00:05:33:13 –> 00:05:39:18
Do you, do you ever act like you’re sick to just get a little more service? You know, a little, little nurse assistance.
00:05:39:26 –> 00:05:42:24
We’re talking about the, you would put peanut butter bars.
00:05:43:02 –> 00:05:45:08
Yeah, the cookies. The peanut butter bars. How about those?
00:05:45:23 –> 00:05:48:08
No, they just, they just show up. What
00:05:48:16 –> 00:05:48:18
Happened
00:05:50:26 –> 00:05:51:22
Back manna
00:05:52:03 –> 00:05:55:26
Back in the kidney stone days. Oh. Oh. How hard did you milk that?
00:05:58:12 –> 00:06:03:10
I only saw her the one time, she didn’t even answer my phone call when I was in so much pain headed to the hospital.
00:06:03:10 –> 00:06:05:12
Well, that’s because it was at three in the morning and
00:06:05:12 –> 00:06:06:17
You were crawling to your truck.
00:06:06:27 –> 00:06:09:00
She was working a night shift. She was awake. Yeah.
00:06:09:07 –> 00:06:12:02
She can’t answer. She’s serving and giving, like we said me. Yeah.
00:06:12:15 –> 00:06:14:19
She told you to toughen up that she sees this every day.
00:06:14:20 –> 00:06:22:07
Yeah, basically. I thought it was my appendix, but she thought it was kidney stone. So anyway, I didn’t really enjoy talking to her at that point in time anyway. Well,
00:06:23:03 –> 00:06:30:18
All right, Devon, we’re gonna kick off a little game, a couple q and a games, but it’s going to, don’t
00:06:30:18 –> 00:06:31:11
You name that,
00:06:31:18 –> 00:06:35:16
Name, that unit we’re gonna, this might be turn into a regular. Who knows
00:06:35:25 –> 00:06:41:18
Why This, this, this first one’s just for you. You ready? Wyatt? You still there? Are,
00:06:41:19 –> 00:06:42:23
Are we talking to me? Yeah,
00:06:43:10 –> 00:06:45:12
I’m, you gotta name this unit. Are you ready?
00:06:46:03 –> 00:06:47:04
It’s 11 2 11.
00:06:47:27 –> 00:06:48:04
No,
00:06:49:05 –> 00:06:53:08
No, no, no, no. It’s more like, finish the sentence. Name the unit. You ready?
00:06:53:27 –> 00:06:54:16
Okay. The
00:06:54:16 –> 00:06:55:20
Bull that ruined the,
00:06:56:21 –> 00:06:57:15
The book Cliffs.
00:06:59:20 –> 00:07:00:15
What? So tell us
00:07:00:15 –> 00:07:05:25
The back story. I killed an elk on the bull, the book Cliffs and, and Wyatt calls it the bull that ruined the book Cliffs.
00:07:06:00 –> 00:07:06:07
Why
00:07:07:06 –> 00:07:07:24
Ask Wyatt?
00:07:08:18 –> 00:07:10:19
What’s that about? Wyatt? Was it the big
00:07:10:29 –> 00:07:12:26
Ssss bull or what was it? No, your
00:07:13:05 –> 00:07:29:27
Personal ball. No, I it, no, there was this little hole in the wall banquet in northern Utah that sold the book Cliffs Elk tag for three years in a row. Anywhere from $1,900 to $2,400 or you know, some spread like that. Archibald buys it one year and then the next year it just skyrocket
00:07:30:14 –> 00:07:32:09
Once he put it on the map. Yeah,
00:07:32:10 –> 00:07:34:26
Well you ought to call him. And I called him
00:07:35:04 –> 00:07:35:23
One time with him.
00:07:36:03 –> 00:07:42:11
Jeez. I think it went to Vegas at a, at another event. They’re like, we can’t went for like eight. But I bought it for 2,400 bucks.
00:07:42:15 –> 00:07:49:18
We can’t have these cheap Utah guys still in this anymore. They sent it to the main Elk camp. But Cowboy Christmas from then on the
00:07:49:18 –> 00:07:50:15
Bull that ruined the book. Cliff,
00:07:51:11 –> 00:07:53:05
I’ve got another question for you. Why? Why?
00:07:53:19 –> 00:07:53:27
Okay.
00:07:54:19 –> 00:08:01:07
Name that unit, the unit that you applied for here in Utah this year.
00:08:05:20 –> 00:08:08:08
I don’t know if that’s the game. Let’s have it
00:08:08:21 –> 00:08:11:25
My little computer file here and see what I actually did. I don’t
00:08:12:02 –> 00:08:15:21
Remember. I’m sorry. Things are blocked out. My
00:08:15:26 –> 00:08:18:29
Computer’s popping. Hey, hey. I’m on a cell phone. I’m losing you. Bad service
00:08:19:23 –> 00:08:20:03
Going
00:08:20:03 –> 00:08:21:02
Through a tunnel right now.
00:08:21:09 –> 00:08:24:02
Things are sketchy in the henhouse over here. I don’t know.
00:08:24:22 –> 00:08:28:09
I’m going through a panel, guys to catch up with you later.
00:08:30:08 –> 00:08:40:16
Well, we had to involve you to some extent and call and Raja and make sure you’re doing all right. Stay hydrated over there. Drink plenty of fluids and cross your fingers.
00:08:41:15 –> 00:08:41:29
Will do.
00:08:42:15 –> 00:08:44:25
Stay outta the monsters. They’re not good for kidney stones.
00:08:44:26 –> 00:08:48:19
Yeah, you don’t worry about me diving into those. But we do have a refreshed supply.
00:08:49:03 –> 00:08:52:01
Have you ever had any creatine since those kidney stones?
00:08:52:29 –> 00:08:55:12
No. No. Of course not.
00:08:56:17 –> 00:09:01:00
I guess it isn’t that kind of the, the thing maybe creatine caused it. Possibly.
00:09:01:07 –> 00:09:05:05
That’s what I heard at the, at the hunt expo. I did have a conversation with the, with the guy that
00:09:05:06 –> 00:09:10:08
When you were back, when you were bulking up a little bit and it just caused a few stones.
00:09:11:07 –> 00:09:14:20
Yeah, most likely. I don’t know about poking out, but,
00:09:14:26 –> 00:09:19:10
Alright, well good luck to you. Alright, keep working bud. Keep working. Okay,
00:09:20:04 –> 00:09:20:14
Later.
00:09:20:27 –> 00:09:38:05
So we did, as a lot of you know, here at Epic Outdoors, we put out a new magazine. It’s the March issue, 2020. We’re cranking. It is March. And this one covered Colorado. All species in Colorado as well as Idaho sheep, goat and moose and what else? Montana,
00:09:38:07 –> 00:09:46:04
Deer elk in Montana. That’s right. Yeah. So, but let’s kick off. Thank your sponsors Carter and let’s knock this off. Talk about the March magazine.
00:09:46:20 –> 00:10:01:11
We do wanna thank our sponsors. Us here at Epic Outdoors as well as Under Armour. We appreciate them as well. And anyway, kind of exciting. This is exciting time of year of answer about 14 calls myself, Bronson, he’s probably answered 14 on Colorado Deer as well since
00:10:01:14 –> 00:10:02:01
Since lunch.
00:10:02:09 –> 00:10:06:02
Yeah, that’s right. Since this hour long lunch that y y accuses of having. Geez.
00:10:06:17 –> 00:10:06:28
Isn’t
00:10:06:28 –> 00:10:09:04
That, and we were just doing business. I don’t get isn’t
00:10:09:04 –> 00:10:12:00
That a federally, he felt mandated lunch
00:10:12:19 –> 00:10:14:14
Period and he felt a little disgruntled.
00:10:14:14 –> 00:10:17:26
The 15 minute breaks. Twice a day and an hour. Geez. Isn’t that standard?
00:10:18:16 –> 00:10:19:07
I don’t know. I thought,
00:10:19:07 –> 00:10:20:05
Was we getting beat up over that?
00:10:20:10 –> 00:10:21:26
We don’t even take our 15 minute breaks.
00:10:22:04 –> 00:10:22:26
I don’t know, sometimes.
00:10:23:07 –> 00:10:24:07
I don’t know. We might have to
00:10:24:07 –> 00:10:27:19
Do, and his defense, we sometimes get the mail while we’re out, so Yeah,
00:10:28:00 –> 00:10:28:10
Yeah. Anyway.
00:10:28:10 –> 00:10:31:29
Some stretches into a little bit. But anyway, he’s, but anyway, he’s timing us. So
00:10:32:04 –> 00:11:38:05
We did manage to put out a magazine so we can’t be too disgruntled And that’s, anyway within this is, it’s been, it’s, it’s awesome. This is one of our favorite issues. It’s jammed full. Awesome stories. We start off with our cover. What an awesome Buck taken by Gordon Nelson there out of the gun Gunnison Basin Country. Killed a 200 and Tencher, I believe I’m going from memory. Yep. 210 inches. Big enough. 2 0 2 with an extra point of two 10 grows. So anyway, what a giant, what an awesome, we appreciate Gordon. Super good guy works with S c I actually, and he’s based outta here in Utah. So anyway, appreciate him. We also had an article from Roger Smithson, super good friend of ours talking about this next 30 years. You know, we talked on a podcast, Bronson, about kind of the, the years that we may have gone through to this point. Some of which were wasted and wasted and how we wish we could go back. And he’s saying, hey, even though the next 30 years you can almost wrap your arms around ’em and you can see the end. They’re actually our best 30. What do you think? Any, any validity to that?
00:11:38:26 –> 00:11:48:07
I can see truth in anything there. Yep, that’s right. But I would take 1985 to 92 again if I could do it. Yeah. For hunting deer in Utah with
00:11:48:07 –> 00:11:49:07
The knowledge you have today. Yeah,
00:11:49:17 –> 00:11:56:20
I may, I mean I didn’t go to the N F L so I probably at the time I’d loved football. I probably would not have played football in high school.
00:11:57:08 –> 00:11:58:06
No way.
00:11:58:13 –> 00:11:58:29
I mean it was fun.
00:11:59:01 –> 00:12:01:11
But that’s coming, that’s saying a lot. Coming from a sports family.
00:12:01:14 –> 00:12:01:23
Well
00:12:02:13 –> 00:12:02:19
Huh?
00:12:03:25 –> 00:12:04:18
One a football.
00:12:04:25 –> 00:12:13:08
I mean this is a guy. Guy we good that’s truck matches, cafe, the colors from high school. Hey. You know what I’m saying? I mean he buys a brand new truck because it’s orange and
00:12:13:08 –> 00:12:19:13
Black. That’s happened once in my life. I don’t do that. Every truck, it just happened once. Screams, they don’t midlife crisis
00:12:19:15 –> 00:12:20:28
To me. They don’t screams. Midlife crisis.
00:12:21:03 –> 00:12:22:12
You sound like one of my daughters.
00:12:24:06 –> 00:12:25:00
Everything’s
00:12:25:00 –> 00:12:26:18
Fine. Alive and well. I’m not,
00:12:27:29 –> 00:12:29:11
Not trying to go back to high school.
00:12:29:17 –> 00:12:33:23
Hey, they didn’t make orange and black trucks 20 years ago, so come on.
00:12:33:23 –> 00:12:34:10
They didn’t
00:12:34:25 –> 00:12:35:19
To name one from
00:12:35:26 –> 00:12:39:12
19 80, 19 72 Chef. They didn’t, they have some orange ones, some burnt orange.
00:12:39:15 –> 00:12:42:16
There were a couple of those two-tone rocker, panel black and,
00:12:42:17 –> 00:12:44:05
But yes with wood. Wood.
00:12:44:07 –> 00:12:44:17
And there was
00:12:44:17 –> 00:12:45:12
Paneling inside.
00:12:45:16 –> 00:12:48:05
The reason I know that is guys in Monticello, Utah had had
00:12:48:05 –> 00:12:52:28
1 72 chefs Were they were Chile out by the eighties though, huh? I don’t think they were out by
00:12:52:28 –> 00:12:55:28
The eighties. Yeah. To not, when I could drive them, I’d
00:12:55:28 –> 00:12:56:10
Like to go
00:12:56:10 –> 00:13:06:28
Back to a 72 show. They were seventies trucks. By the time I was driving in the mid, early to early, late eighties, early nineties, they were onto pass tails and whatever earth tones. You know,
00:13:07:00 –> 00:13:15:02
Anybody out there has a 72 shove or a 76 high boy or something like that. Let me knows. I dunno why I like them. Did you buy another truck today?
00:13:15:22 –> 00:13:18:07
Let’s get on that before we talk to Colorado. Come, let’s talk. Dude.
00:13:18:19 –> 00:13:19:19
We were cruising through this. We were,
00:13:19:29 –> 00:13:26:13
But quick hiatus you guys, you listeners have heard for years rash of crap We give to Carter about trucks. Okay,
00:13:27:08 –> 00:13:27:29
Why do it again?
00:13:28:08 –> 00:13:45:16
You can’t drive anywhere in our hometown or anywhere in the world with him, without him pointing out a truck that would be good for this, that or the other in his life. And he’s often stopped and put business cards under the wipers of people. Okay. Saying if you ever wanna sell this truck, call me strangers. Just a truck.
00:13:45:19 –> 00:13:48:23
Why does that have to come? What does that have to do with today and why?
00:13:49:02 –> 00:13:52:04
Why you just bought a new truck for No, I don’t know why
00:13:52:05 –> 00:13:53:23
It wasn’t, it’s not new. Okay. It’s not new.
00:13:53:29 –> 00:13:57:20
Okay. A truck that is new to you. Yeah. And tell us about that
00:13:57:20 –> 00:14:00:25
Truck to stick shift Toyota Tacoma. Yes. And that truck we’ve
00:14:00:25 –> 00:14:02:25
Talked about trying to pry why it’s, I
00:14:02:25 –> 00:14:32:22
Was hoping he needed an oh two sensor and now I’m replacing the engine. Okay. Alright. You got it out of me. Don’t be blowing schwepps across this table. There’s coronavirus infection coming around. Barely. It’s true. I was hoping for the best and I got the worst, John. However, I’ve done that five times. John, John has had five engines and he since has sent me to the website and I have an engine coming. Okay. You’ve had
00:14:33:01 –> 00:14:35:05
Listen now Monday, maybe even
00:14:35:05 –> 00:14:38:10
A couple, if we can justify getting the mail in at once
00:14:38:12 –> 00:14:46:20
A while. Monday at lunch. We, we on the way home from lunch probably was an hour lunch. Wyatt? Yes, but we stopped by the D M V. So you could turn in the title Monday.
00:14:46:21 –> 00:14:47:20
Okay. That’s right. You turned
00:14:47:20 –> 00:14:49:01
In the title Monday today.
00:14:49:03 –> 00:14:52:12
Yeah, I know, I get it. You had it Saturday. I bought a heck of a deal.
00:14:52:17 –> 00:14:58:02
You bought it Saturday. Turned the title in to get plates Monday and now it’s on blocks and an engine’s coming.
00:14:58:09 –> 00:15:00:16
Okay. It’s not on blocks. I drove it to the office here
00:15:01:13 –> 00:15:02:07
Is that it barely
00:15:02:09 –> 00:15:05:01
Got here but it, but it is. It’s in the parking lot. You won
00:15:05:01 –> 00:15:06:29
Some, you lose some. That’s right. So anyway,
00:15:06:29 –> 00:15:14:13
It got other used vehicles that are amazing. This one is gonna be amazing. And so anyway, it’s gonna teach my kids how to drive a stick and it’s kind of fun. It’s the most
00:15:14:13 –> 00:15:14:25
Expensive,
00:15:14:25 –> 00:15:15:05
Expensive
00:15:15:08 –> 00:15:20:24
Lesson. You could rent it a car, you could rent it a Toyota Corolla. Yes. Stick shift.
00:15:20:27 –> 00:15:26:16
But then you’re not self-sufficient in this day and age of a coronavirus. You never know. There might not be a rental available.
00:15:27:17 –> 00:15:28:10
Have you checked.
00:15:28:19 –> 00:15:29:25
So you need to be self-sufficient
00:15:29:28 –> 00:15:30:23
For $300.
00:15:31:05 –> 00:15:35:11
I’ve heard you need toilet paper, you hand sanitizer and wheels and gas. Okay.
00:15:35:22 –> 00:15:41:11
For 300 bucks a month you could have rented that thing. And I’ll bet in 60 days he’s a pro I driving a stick. I’ll bet,
00:15:41:11 –> 00:15:44:24
I’ll bet I could rent 650. Now that the coronavirus, nobody’s traveling. That’s
00:15:44:24 –> 00:16:00:14
Right. You making my own point. Well I, you could have spent a lot, I didn’t realize money than a truck. A truck and a new engine until, until yesterday I was in your boat. I have a son basically the same age. I’d like to get a stick shift for him. I’m gonna rent one.
00:16:01:14 –> 00:16:04:25
This is gonna be the best truck I’ve ever had. And it’s gonna have a new engine.
00:16:05:25 –> 00:16:12:07
Anyway, having said that, let’s talk about Colorado. What’s new in Colorado? Let’s get to the nitty gritty here. Colorado 2020. This
00:16:12:17 –> 00:17:28:10
What’s new? The dates are new. That’s kind of exciting. They have a new five year program on season dates this year or a little bit later than last year. Approximately three days for deer. Let’s just call it, you know, deer, elk. But let’s just say a deer. That’s the most exciting thing going on there next year, Bronson. Even later. It’s gonna be awesome. And so that’s kind of what everybody’s talking about. A do we use ’em this year? ’cause next year point creeps gonna go crazy. So everybody’s looking to go this year as well, which is gonna cause point creep this year too. So anyway, we’re dealing with all those questions right now. Third season, this year’s November 7th to the 13th, fourth is November 18th to the 22nd anyway. And then for next year, third is November 13th to the 19th, and the fourth is November 24th to the 28th. So just bad for deer. There’s deer chewing their cudd right now that are not gonna be alive in the near future. And you know, a lot of it is date related. And I think that’s one of the things we’ve talked about a lot on these podcasts is dates, season dates, kill animals, early season dates for guys that scout. They create habits and you know, as such, you know, guys are willing to scout, have a great opportunity to kill deer and then rut hunts. Kill deer.
00:17:28:15 –> 00:17:50:02
Yeah. Archery dates in certain states for elk that fluctuate. Some states have set dates like New Mexico, Nevada, Wyoming, you know, they have set archery dates, you know, other dates. Arizona. Utah, they fluctuate with the calendar. Sometimes they center the elk. RT moves a little bit. Centers up on a certain season. Utah, you know, being probably the, the best example of that. It,
00:17:50:04 –> 00:17:53:14
It can be a matter of three, five days. Oh yeah. A huge difference.
00:17:54:04 –> 00:18:16:18
It can, the switch flipping on on elk a little bit of the first cool snap of the year finally gets ’em going. And maybe that, you know, isn’t until the 15th, 18th of September sometimes in some places, but it’s a pretty big deal. But Colorado standardized their archery dates, that’s one thing. As far as archery mule deer, it’s probably not as good. Frankly it’s about a week later started, right? That’s
00:18:16:18 –> 00:18:28:07
Right. Yep. They, they did. They’re starting September 2nd, they’re going to the 30th. Like it’s like, like Adam’s talking about, it’s kind of nice to have standardized season dates, you know, every year what you’re gonna, what you’re gonna be up against.
00:18:28:07 –> 00:18:39:26
Yep. But, but from a pattern mulder standpoint, before they start earlier, better rubbing velvet and all that earlier better. But from an elk standpoint in Colorado it now goes the second to 30th. It’s, it’s better from an archery elk standpoint. That’s
00:18:39:26 –> 00:18:43:18
Right. Yeah. You’re gonna be hunting rutten bulls and so hard, right. Anyway, for three
00:18:43:18 –> 00:18:44:07
Weeks perhaps.
00:18:44:10 –> 00:19:18:13
And that is another thing with this date change. The bad thing is deer dive, right? But the other side of it is, is there’s less, there’s gonna be so many tags in the field no matter what, but the less hardcore mule deer hunters will be in hunting archery. You know what I mean? Because now with these late dates, everybody’s shifting to, I need to take advantage of this one time opportunity. The deer are gonna be vulnerable. They’re not used to be hunting in forest these this time of year, whether it be this year or next year. And then, you know, so it’s pulling, it’s gonna pull some of the hardcore hunters out the archery muzzle. They just
00:19:18:13 –> 00:19:50:05
Can’t avoid hunting mul during the ru. It’s too tempting. But, but for you folks that hunt with multiple weapons, hunt with a bow, hunt with a willing to hunt with an open site muzzle loader with some of the restrictions, Colorado has way underutilized in our opinion. Those seasons. You get to go first, you know, per se. The muzzle loader’s just a what? A nine day window, right? Within the archery hunt. Kind of a unique system in place there where the, you know, the archery’s a 28 or whatever day season, the muzzle are just a nine day window. About a week into that it starts or so. And yeah,
00:19:50:15 –> 00:19:54:12
It interferes with like the early high country rifles have muzzle and archery going on on, so,
00:19:54:12 –> 00:19:58:22
And yeah, you got three different weapon types could be in the field hunting. Yeah, same bucket the same time.
00:19:58:24 –> 00:20:27:29
Guys with orange guys with camo, guys flipping each other off, who knows what’s going on, shooting over each other’s heads, whatever. The other thing you know that we might point out, and this just kind of goes into theory, let’s call it application theory. And nobody knows the right answer necessarily. ’cause where when the storms hit is when it really gets good. But second rifle in 2021 will end November 7th. Yeah, well everybody’s gonna be thinking about the third and fourth. Yeah. What about the second? Yeah, this year it might be off the charts
00:20:27:29 –> 00:20:30:24
This year. It goes to the 1st of November. I mean it’s not
00:20:30:24 –> 00:20:31:08
So bad. Some
00:20:31:08 –> 00:20:40:19
Years we’ve been there, I’ve killed deer November 2nd before I have talked about this many times. 43, I dunno, 15 plus years ago. I want
00:20:40:20 –> 00:20:41:11
Coordinates.
00:20:41:24 –> 00:20:42:02
Well
00:20:42:11 –> 00:20:42:19
Alex,
00:20:43:05 –> 00:20:45:07
He’s been dead for 15, 16 years.
00:20:45:15 –> 00:21:22:28
As we jump into Colorado, we’re super excited about deer. Everything revolves around deer. But let’s talk about sheep. Sheep are awesome in Colorado. You’re not gonna kill an absolute monster necessarily. Plenty of non-resident opportunities. They have a preference slash weighted bonus point type system. Once you have three preference points, you’re technically in the draw. And, and it’s not by law that that happens. What is by law is guys with three points have preference over guys with two. And there’s so many people with three and it maxes out at three that those are the people that are, have valid applications in the draw. And so up until three you might as well put in points only. Either way it’s fine. You’re making a point only application till you get to three.
00:21:23:14 –> 00:22:16:10
Yeah. And one of the bigger things to keep in mind is since they went away from the paper applications, they are now charging as of last year, they’re charging the moose, sheep and goat, I should say Rocky, Rocky mountain, big horn, goat and moose. A hundred dollars point fee. It’s not, not cheap, it, it’s on a card. It’s not upfront in the fees like it used to be on a paper application. But you gotta kind of calculate if it’s really worth it for you. Some people that’s a deterrent for the three year buy-in before you’re in the draw. But having said that, they give a variety of different rifle units, generally the odds are pretty good. The, the wave of applicants a few years ago from when they went away from paper applications, they’re, they’re coming a year from now. They’re gonna be, odds are gonna get worse a year from now for the sheep, moose, and goat applicants that didn’t have to now front the fees and pay the paper check a couple years ago.
00:22:16:13 –> 00:22:50:05
But regardless of that great state to apply and they have some archery, only handful of archery only sheep units. It’s, you know, one of the few states that has that for non-residents. I guess it’s the only state. Utah’s got some archery sheep, but they’re resident only. So great opportunities there. Good hunts for those species. Just a little expensive. Again, buy the hunting license to play in Colorado. It’s not a simple $9 application fee for sheep, moose, and goat. You’re gonna have to pay some pay except for the desert sheep that is cheap. Since there’s not a point system for them. And you have to either choose either or on the desert and Rockies,
00:22:50:07 –> 00:24:00:26
That point fee comes out later, later when they charge the tag fee. So anyway, great opportunity like, like Adam’s talking about your first choice, the only one that matters and they’re gonna go to the next guy. And there are archery only opportunities, a new one S 69, kind of interesting. Got some good rams there, physically easier type hunt as far as sheep hunt goes and goes. And so one thing they did do is they left out in the paper regs, SS nine rifles and we went to print with the online regs and paper regs coming out with that omission. And then they updated their online regs. And so we had to update our EMAG paper. The, the paper version of Epic Outdoors reflects that. And so S nine is not in there, but we did update the eag if you wanna go check it out. SS nine’s a brutal, rugged, crazy hunt. That’s awesome. Got got some decent potential up there. There quite a few sheep up on the Sangre de Christos. And so anyway, very physical backpack, horseback type hunt. But anyway, the rifle hunts are in our EAG and so you might go check those out. The archery hunts were always in there. No problem. We covered that in the paper mag as well. Okay,
00:24:02:01 –> 00:24:47:00
Well you know, maybe we’ll brush by. We, we talked about deer in the, and we talked about the dates a little bit and some of the changes. So maybe let’s, let’s briefly cover elk, elk and antelope just from that standpoint because most people and most of the calls we’re gonna take are gonna be regarding deer. That’s not entirely true. We get a lot of calls about Colorado elk. The problem is there’s no place to draw. There’s such a bottleneck for trophy, you know, we’ll use that term I guess a little bit loosely when we talk about Colorado elk. ’cause there are a few trophy units, some of the northwest corners and a few others, but they just don’t have enough units statewide to spread out all the applicants and, and point creep is terrible major bottlenecks. So we cover what we feel. There are some of the better options.
00:24:47:00 –> 00:25:26:23
Some of them you’re gonna have to maybe concede to use an outfitter on to maybe maximize what you could kill there. Maybe like a unit 40 or like a unit 20 around Rocky Mountain National Park. Don’t take as many points to draw as the northwest corner, but you might kill just as big a bull without weight. Think you’re gonna wait, you know, 20 more years to, to draw something. But you know, muzzle loader, archery, two to three or four rifle seasons for elk. A lot of different opportunities to hunt elk in Colorado. I made a few new units this year, archery limited entry, you know, handful or two units around the state and probably worth mentioning a few of those. Yeah, they did
00:25:26:23 –> 00:25:53:08
Like 44 and all that stuff right there. Just South eagle. And then also that southwest corner of the state, you know, has now got limited entry archery seasons. Yeah. And they maintained the over the counter on the rifle second and thirds on the rifle. So anyway, there, there is some concern on some populations and different things and dynamic that’s going on there. And so kind of interesting where they give you, you know, limited entry archery, draw archery and then over the counter second and third just, I don’t know. Yeah.
00:25:54:05 –> 00:26:56:29
Hey, we heard it that biologists are second to none. We, you know what I mean? I mean some of them, so I don’t know. They probably know what they’re doing. They, they definitely manage ginormous herds of animals and so anyway, kind of crazy though, but we’ll see. We haven’t seen the quotas yet on those or any of these, you know, elk and deer opportunities with these new season dates. So it’ll be interesting to see what the tech quotas come out as with the preference as Bronson’s talking about, you know, having point creep a little bit. There are preference points in Colorado, most of you know that, or a lot of you guys out there that have been applying in the past know that and understand that for those of you that don’t, guys with a high number of preference points have preference in drawing tags with with compared to those that apply with less than they have. So there’s no random drawing. They do do have a hybrid draw that only takes place in certain units and those are listed in the regulations. And only if there’s, if we haven’t met our quota well in every case we met our quota. Yeah,
00:26:57:02 –> 00:27:46:22
We, we actually went and looked ’em up Jason, we get calls on ’em. Hey, what hybrid unit would you recommend I apply for? You have to have a minimum of five points built up before you can even be eligible for a hybrid draw. Which essentially is, they draw 80% of the tags in that unit for preference point holders and then give 20% randomly. The problem with that is when they do the 80% draw, the non-resident quota gets met there. And so any 20% random tags go to residents. We’ve looked it up and that happened in all the deer elk units. Yeah. So now with antelope there is not a resident, non-resident quota involved on antelope. So we did see some non-residents and we know licensed app clients and others that have drawn hybrid antelope tags because there’s not a differentiated resident, non-resident setaside quotas, but non-residents for deer and elk just, just ignore the hybrid draw.
00:27:46:22 –> 00:28:25:26
There’s people that bring it up every year that say that’s a good plan option to pull a tag, get lucky it is for a resident, it is not for a non-resident. And the preference point draw, like Jason alluded for deer and elk and, and antelope, it’s, it’s unique. A lot of states have a a percentage of 20%, a 50%, a 75% of the tags go into the max point holders for Colorado deer, elk, and antelope. With the exception of the hybrid draw units. It’s a hundred percent of the tags. Most cases all the tags are going right at the top and they start whittling down point later at a time until they run outta tags. There is no benefit for you to put in for 44 third season with two points. There’s thinking
00:28:25:26 –> 00:28:26:24
You have a hybrid chance
00:28:26:26 –> 00:29:29:05
There and there’s no, no mathematical chance. So you’ve got to have that in mind when you start an application plan in Colorado. If you’re starting, you gotta have a, a realistic goal of how you’re gonna use those points in the, in, in, in the near future because it’s something that’s taken 20 plus years right now to get, don’t even ever think about it unless I guess they ever change their system. What you can’t fully predict, but you gotta really keep that in mind. And we really do add a lot of units. Second season, third season, fourth season archery, muzz loader for deer when it comes to deer to just try to give you a lot of options. You’ve heard us say it over and over Colorado deer. It’s been tough the last couple years. Few years. It’s, it’s tough to really know exactly the current status of every unit right now. A little bit of a crap shoot, little bit of a guess still great genetics, still good season dates, just cannot say these are the best, these are the best and these are the best. There’s just a lot of good options over there right now. Well
00:29:29:10 –> 00:30:11:16
That’s a hundred percent true and there’s so much strategy that goes involved, that’s involved and everybody’s situation is different. What everybody wants is different and, and your point levels are all different. And so there’s so much strategy and the good thing is, is you can tell when you can get drawn, you can see what happened in 2019. The downside is, is 2020 later season dates 2021, incredible season dates for rifle anyway. And so that, that’s where the strategy comes in. That’s where the guessing comes in. We can kind of get a gut feel ’cause of the inflow of calls we get and the points that people are having. They’re applying for certain units with more points than it takes. We can get a gut feel what those points, what those units are gonna jump to of many cases. And we deal with it all the time.
00:30:11:29 –> 00:30:54:29
Guys wanna make the absolute best choice with the points they have. I’ve got six points and they’re wanting to apply for a point that took a very small percentage draw with six last year and they had five last year. If they got in, it would be a miracle. And, and so we’re trying to be realistic. Hey, do you really wanna draw this year? ’cause if you do apply for something with five or less, you can have a little point creep anyway. And, and people just cannot, they feel like they don’t wanna leave any points on the table, so to speak and draw something that is too easy to draw and they didn’t really have a great value with a particular tag. It’s a natural human thing. You don’t wanna pay more for a truck than you have to. You don’t wanna pay more for anything than you absolutely have to.
00:30:55:27 –> 00:31:39:04
And so it’s normal, but at the same time it’s a little bit tough to figure that out. There’s a lot of strategy knowing what’s gonna do, what’s gonna happen, what’s gonna change. We did have a section within the Colorado deer writeup and so make sure you read that. There’s some, we talk about strategy in this, but we also have a little section on what you can draw as your second choice tags. You could put down your first choice. If you don’t draw your first choice, you’ll gain a point. Even if you do draw your second or third choice, they’ll look at everybody’s first choice and then go to seconds and then go to thirds. So anyway, there’s some opportunities there for guys to draw a second choice tag. If you draw one, you’re gonna gain a point, not such a bad gig. And, and you can still go hunt the state of Colorado. So anyway, again, it all kind of feeds into the strategy.
00:31:40:05 –> 00:32:21:04
Yeah, you know, it’s a good point on that the, the list of units that you can draw as a second choice has gotten increasingly smaller and smaller over the years. Like Jason said, you, you don’t have a chance to draw something as a second choice if everybody in that put that unit as their first choice didn’t get a tag. So it’s not like other states like in Arizona or like a New Mexico where they look at two or three choices. They look at everybody’s first choice. And so if there’s a hundred tags in unit and there’s 90 applicants for that first choice, okay, there’s 10 tags now that can go to a second choice and people can clean those up. But maybe it’s worth looking for, especially if you have minimal points or you just have time in your schedule and you wanna be in Colorado somewhere this year.
00:32:21:29 –> 00:33:30:01
There is something about for everything a little bit when we’re addressing the issue of like point creep and trying to target a unit this year and getting the most outta your points. Look at the, look at the units in our tables. Look at the tag numbers. If you’re dealing with a unit that has 30 total non-resident or 30 total tags and let’s say five to seven non-resident tags, that’s very volatile When you’re talking about only five or seven non-residents gonna draw. It doesn’t take very many people shift into that unit to really make it jump and edge you out. Versus a unit with 3, 4, 500 tags that took four points last year, it can still absorb some crossovers and not affect it that much. So point creep really has a a a tendency to, to really flare up in a unit with low, low tag numbers because you just can’t take very many crossovers before all of a sudden, boom, that thing shot up to six, eight points when it took four or five the year before. You know, late dates. We’ve talked about that. So look at the total tag numbers in the magazine. That also can give you a hint of the, I guess the volatility of a unit teetering on how bad can point creep really happen on that unit. There’s
00:33:30:01 –> 00:34:20:12
Two sides to drawing ons, just like what you’re talking about. There’s two sides to drawing ons. There’s tag numbers and there’s applicants. And when you’re dealing with 15 total tag numbers, for example, on something that’s kind of increasingly being more and more popular, I mean it’s gonna jump three to four points, five points is not, you know, out of the outta line in, in, in a point jump type year like this is gonna be. Yeah, and what’s crazy about is last year was terrible. Last year was absolutely terrible. But you know, if you have points left, if you have an open schedule and you have points after 2021, you played your cards wrong. Yeah, that’s right. Even though last year was terrible. Just saying it’s gonna get tougher and tougher. I don’t see Colorado giving up that many tags. I don’t, they’re wanting to clean out some deer with c w d. They think it’s a proper management plan as to clean out an upper age class of deer and deal with C w D that way. So
00:34:21:06 –> 00:35:01:05
Yeah, we’re not holding our breath. I guess that that tag numbers because of later dates this year, even later dates next year and then the three or four years after that there’s, they remain late that that tag numbers are gonna be slashed just so that they don’t kill too many deer. I mean, I would like to think that that’s gonna happen. I’m not, I’m not fully optimistic at will, so who knows, who knows? I don’t wanna be doom and gloom about Colorado’s deer, but I i I just feel that it may not be as good in a few years if, if the stars align and we get weather and snow and all that that we haven’t had and then late season tags. Oh, it could be, it could deer could take it on the chin over there pretty hard.
00:35:01:21 –> 00:35:27:00
Yeah. And you know, we don’t always know everything. Like we, we’ve hunted a lot of units in Colorado, I don’t know, 30 of ’em or something. I don’t know a lot of units. Having said that, there’s a lot of units we haven’t hunted that are producing some big deer units, some of those units south of Denver and just, there’s just a lot of country that has, that has known to produce good bucks and we haven’t taken advantage of. You can only do so much and you know, the last 25, 30 plus years of hunting. So
00:35:27:17 –> 00:35:32:20
Speaking of who’s, who’s got, who’s got points we’re gonna try to burn this year,
00:35:34:02 –> 00:35:37:26
John says none right here, right? Right. John Zero. Okay. What do you
00:35:37:26 –> 00:35:38:14
Mean I zero
00:35:38:19 –> 00:35:39:12
Adam. Oh, okay.
00:35:39:19 –> 00:35:39:29
He is my,
00:35:39:29 –> 00:35:49:14
Do you know somebody that’s more secretive than John Peterson? And I’ve gotta name this unit question for him. But anyway, keep going. Do you, I’m not gonna tell
00:35:49:14 –> 00:35:52:02
You I don’t, I don’t know how to respond to that question.
00:35:52:16 –> 00:35:54:02
You’re tapping out. No,
00:35:54:07 –> 00:35:56:08
I’m not tapping out. I just don’t. Okay.
00:35:56:09 –> 00:35:56:19
I’ve got
00:35:57:09 –> 00:36:01:29
Got plans that he’s not saying. I am pointing you out right now. Is it morally
00:36:01:29 –> 00:36:02:25
Wrong to lie
00:36:03:13 –> 00:36:04:04
About hunting?
00:36:05:23 –> 00:36:06:01
Well
00:36:06:03 –> 00:36:06:22
What does that mean?
00:36:06:23 –> 00:36:09:08
Well, I’m just saying if you ask me what go
00:36:09:28 –> 00:36:10:11
For to
00:36:10:11 –> 00:36:14:28
You, don’t have to lie. You just don’t have to tell the full truth. Exactly. A lot of our
00:36:14:28 –> 00:36:23:02
Members for a hundred dollars expect that we are a hundred percent transparent and should lay out our application strategy. And in large part we do. I’m not worried
00:36:23:02 –> 00:36:24:07
About the members, it’s you guys.
00:36:25:13 –> 00:36:25:19
Oh,
00:36:25:20 –> 00:36:26:13
What are you worried about,
00:36:28:12 –> 00:36:29:00
John? That was,
00:36:30:02 –> 00:36:32:24
We have helped you strategize many times. I,
00:36:33:03 –> 00:36:33:13
You walk,
00:36:33:21 –> 00:36:37:04
When you walk away and under your breath you’re like, thank you,
00:36:38:08 –> 00:36:38:17
I’ve
00:36:38:17 –> 00:36:40:07
Now made my plan that I’m not gonna
00:36:40:07 –> 00:36:43:18
Tell them about. Case in point. And you don’t need to divulge
00:36:43:22 –> 00:36:44:28
The unit, not anywhere. You
00:36:44:28 –> 00:36:53:14
Do not need to divulge the unit right now. But about a day or two before Utah was to end, we asked John as a reminder, John, you got Utah stuff in
00:36:53:21 –> 00:36:54:10
Being nice.
00:36:54:22 –> 00:37:08:04
Oh crap, what should I do? And we’ve, you know, promptly talked to you about your points and we threw out a couple units and within and the funny part of it’s why it vacillated back and forth for 60 days on the Utah. And he applied. Why it the last day
00:37:08:10 –> 00:37:09:07
Since Christmas. Yeah.
00:37:09:15 –> 00:37:23:20
The last day, as we heard on probably the last podcast, he wanted his app on the top of the pile in the computer, right. All that. Yeah. Well John was was the opposite of that. We threw out a couple units, burn ’em, John go hunting this year. He walked, we said, all right, did you end up
00:37:24:07 –> 00:37:24:13
Absolutely.
00:37:24:18 –> 00:37:34:05
Okay, John might be hunting elk in Utah this year. We will see point creep if that happens, but dear That’s right. You, you drew your tag last year, right? Yeah, he
00:37:34:05 –> 00:37:46:19
Did. But what’s interesting is how many times has he brought it up since he’s praying we forget about it, that he happened to kill a 30 inch buck and that we never bring it up again. Praying. John, am I wrong? You might not be wrong.
00:37:48:23 –> 00:37:50:11
Love it. So
00:37:50:23 –> 00:37:57:00
He’s praying we forget about a 30 inch buck he’s hunting here in Utah. It’s got cheaters everywhere. John, am I wrong?
00:37:58:00 –> 00:37:58:19
It’s got one.
00:37:58:23 –> 00:38:02:17
No comment. It’s got more than one cheater. Well how many cheaters? I think one on each
00:38:02:17 –> 00:38:04:06
Side if I remember one. Yeah.
00:38:05:01 –> 00:38:05:10
Wait,
00:38:05:14 –> 00:38:08:10
What stud? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:38:10:19 –> 00:38:29:01
No I, I’ve I’m, I’m one of those guys that, you know, I’ve got double digit points. I, you know, I’ve been either going back on turnback tags or second choice, couple cheaper landowner tags over the last 10 years. What do you sniffling? Just No, I told myself I
00:38:29:01 –> 00:38:32:01
Might be getting a, I might be getting the coronavirus. I don’t know. I have a little sniffle
00:38:32:01 –> 00:38:38:11
On that. I told myself that I would never get this many points again, but I’ve been going probably, you know, I’ve been to Colorado probably seven or eight of the last 10.
00:38:38:14 –> 00:38:39:13
How, how many do you have?
00:38:40:07 –> 00:39:01:12
I think 10, 11 or 12. Oh yeah. Something like that. So I have options, but I’m one of those guys that depending on how well I sleep one night, the next morning I come and I’m thinking I’ve got it, I’m going on second season, the one of the best seconds in the state and I’m gonna go, ’cause I wanna be there first. It’s going until November 1st this year. Yeah, the season date. Yeah. I wanna be there first. I’m gonna crush bucks whenever.
00:39:01:15 –> 00:39:03:28
Did you have enough enough points you could draw that in 2021?
00:39:04:16 –> 00:39:12:02
Yes. And that enters into my mind. So the next night I go to sleep, I wake up and I’m like, alright, look at these third season hunt Simon again gonna get and then
00:39:12:09 –> 00:39:13:28
As a second choice, right? No. Or
00:39:13:28 –> 00:39:16:13
First? No first choice. No, I’m talking about burning ’em. No shiz,
00:39:16:20 –> 00:39:16:26
I’m
00:39:16:26 –> 00:39:31:12
Talking about burning them. All right. Okay. And then the next night I have a different sleep and I think, oh, November 18th to the 22nd. Wow. That’s the fourth season sounds pretty good. I’m all in on that. And then I look at the list of what I can really draw with that and I’m like,
00:39:31:13 –> 00:39:38:10
So you’re about like the 14 people that I’ve talked to since lunch today. Not sure what to do. Still up in the air. Yeah,
00:39:38:13 –> 00:39:54:08
That’s right. I’ve got options. I have a lot of options and I am gonna try to use ’em this year. I just probably gonna lean towards more after thinking about it more where more of a third or fourth season option where that would depend on if I just settle on third or fourth.
00:39:54:14 –> 00:39:58:02
I’m just asking what all the listeners are wondering in their own minds. Okay. So anyway.
00:39:58:03 –> 00:39:58:26
Well, you know,
00:39:59:22 –> 00:40:07:14
So back to the question, I guess curious question. It begs the question, is it, is it morally wrong to lie about hunting?
00:40:09:17 –> 00:40:17:20
Sometimes if someone’s dumb enough to ask you a question, I’m talking like maybe in the field. That’s what I was, that’s what I was referring to. If hear in the field
00:40:18:05 –> 00:40:19:04
What you mean? You’re not talking
00:40:19:17 –> 00:40:19:26
An office
00:40:19:29 –> 00:40:20:19
Environment
00:40:20:19 –> 00:40:22:19
With your employer. Where’d you kill him? You looking over the,
00:40:23:10 –> 00:40:27:14
In the back of a pickup truck on the, like where’d you kill him? Right? Where’d you
00:40:27:14 –> 00:40:28:16
Shoot him? Are you? Yeah,
00:40:28:17 –> 00:40:29:19
Right behind the shoulder.
00:40:29:28 –> 00:40:35:26
I think John’s diverting the conversation. Go ahead. Where were you going with it?
00:40:35:29 –> 00:40:39:29
I’ve got another diversion. What percentage of guys switch their unit every year
00:40:40:07 –> 00:40:42:07
To when? When after they apply? No,
00:40:42:09 –> 00:40:46:29
Like let’s say from year to year. Like it’s just a guess. We won’t know the answer. Yeah,
00:40:46:29 –> 00:40:50:07
There there’s constant inputs and variables of their friends. I’m,
00:40:50:14 –> 00:40:51:12
I’m not really thinking
00:40:52:09 –> 00:40:54:02
So we’re talking, you know this unit.
00:40:54:02 –> 00:40:54:23
Yeah, you’re not even,
00:40:55:01 –> 00:41:00:17
I’m not even really thinking about the units from last year. I mean it’s an option but I’m looking at other stuff This year you’ve had
00:41:00:17 –> 00:41:02:19
New fresh inputs. Yeah. And
00:41:02:19 –> 00:41:09:17
Just perspective changes and not necessarily dead deer with pitchers because there’s not very many of those all over the place from Colorado last year. Have
00:41:09:17 –> 00:41:10:20
You seen our mag looks pretty good.
00:41:10:26 –> 00:41:12:22
I mean it’s good. However, the highlight
00:41:12:25 –> 00:41:13:16
Reel is impressive.
00:41:13:20 –> 00:41:35:01
The highlight reel’s impressive as always. But the collective numbers of highlight reel bucks was definitely off. And so it’s not like I’m targeting something because it just, yeah, outshined everything else, everything was tough last year. It really was. I’m probably in a more to a November schedule because my late oc my late October is u is gonna be busy this year. I’ve got a feeling.
00:41:36:04 –> 00:41:42:00
Oh what? What? What would you be doing? It’s
00:41:42:00 –> 00:41:43:08
Okay to lie. See what I mean? No,
00:41:43:08 –> 00:41:44:13
I see what I mean. I’m
00:41:44:13 –> 00:41:45:18
Talking It’s okay to lie. No,
00:41:45:19 –> 00:41:46:26
Here’s another case of point of
00:41:46:26 –> 00:42:11:08
Lying. I’ve, here’s another case. I’ve got a good friend that’s gonna probably draw his desert sheep tag this year in Utah and that’s good. I kind of owe it to him. That’s good point. I agree. And then I got the general for Utah with, with my kids, which you know that’s a big deal. That’s October 17 to 25. I feel a little crowded on the second season and it is gonna move later. So if I figure if I go for a third or fourth and I don’t get it next year, I’ve got a second season probably he’s on a front burner.
00:42:11:08 –> 00:42:15:11
Well, and if the coronavirus keeps going the way it is, we might be the only guys in the field.
00:42:16:02 –> 00:42:26:07
Well if you’re the strong, we’re gonna find out who’s the strong. Wow. I mean immune system. I’m talking. So doesn’t matter about brute strength or how rock hard you are,
00:42:27:19 –> 00:42:48:10
How much creatine you take. Why, why just doesn’t matter. So anyway, that’s that this is this, this all, it’s a lot of variables. All this, all of these theories, all of this, all these variables play into hundreds of schedules and these guys call in and then they kind of get frustrated. We don’t have an a perfect answer for him.
00:42:48:18 –> 00:42:51:22
Devon, Devon rose his hand. You were looking at me. Oh
00:42:51:22 –> 00:42:52:00
Sorry.
00:42:52:17 –> 00:42:55:08
But he, when you said who wants to use their points, his hand
00:42:55:12 –> 00:42:56:22
Shot up. Well you said who has points?
00:42:57:02 –> 00:42:58:20
Oh to use, what are you
00:42:58:20 –> 00:42:59:01
Gonna do?
00:42:59:07 –> 00:43:07:22
So now he’s rephrase it, who has points? And now I said pretty sure the question was who has points they plan on using And he was like this. But now it sees just
00:43:07:25 –> 00:43:11:14
So many liars in this room. I’m the only one that’s hand hundred percent
00:43:11:14 –> 00:43:12:14
Transparent that you But you,
00:43:12:29 –> 00:43:17:26
You have six or eight somewhere in there if I remember have nine. Yeah, come on you’re in this. You got options too.
00:43:18:02 –> 00:43:19:02
I’m right there with you. Third or
00:43:19:02 –> 00:43:36:08
Fourth season, you also usually have some little bit of guiding obligations, which we all do. Which you know, we all, when I say we all, I mean the epic crew, we got a deer hunt. We’re guiding first part of November five days. So third season or later is probably something you’re looking at too. That’s another reason. Yeah. Chasing the second season. I’m not really looking
00:43:36:08 –> 00:43:44:12
At, but it’s interesting and it’s, it is kind of fun ’cause you do, I do look at archery hunts. I look at third season. I actually look at maps I want, I don’t, I I like, I like a lot of b l
00:43:44:14 –> 00:43:49:16
M property. I’ve been wondering what you’ve been doing over there. Quite on. No I haven’t. You work your guns.
00:43:49:23 –> 00:43:51:11
B l m maps. Just from a what
00:43:51:11 –> 00:43:58:23
You mean I, I like to just go, you know I don’t, I don’t like to worry about it. You mean where I’m at? Property boundaries. Like I want to just glass go big
00:43:58:25 –> 00:44:01:02
Chunks of big chunks of public and go yeah that
00:44:01:07 –> 00:44:02:02
That sways my,
00:44:02:23 –> 00:44:46:28
There’s some people that do that no matter if it’s private or public glass Seago glass seago. Yeah. Okay. Before we leave Colorado you can apply for goat and moose as well. We covered it in the magazine. All the units that non-residents can apply for. Get on there, check ’em out. There was a few changes goats they, they took the G three and G 13 combined them. I was in G three. It was terrible. It was, it sucked. Thank you know it was a buddy of, in fact Roger Smithson who wrote the article our next 30 years, he’s probably referring to the fact that we learned from that goat hunt and hopefully our next 30 years are better. But anyway, they did put G 13 in with it. So there’s a few changes that can be outlined in our Colorado issue. We also covered antelope. We’re super excited about antelope this year.
00:44:47:17 –> 00:44:48:13
Somebody’s gonna burn their points.
00:44:48:13 –> 00:44:53:04
That’s right. That’d be me. Okay. Moving around. So I wanna name this unit real quick. Oh
00:44:53:09 –> 00:44:58:00
Okay. Is it a Colorado deal John? Are we gonna do all the name that unit together thought at the end successfully
00:44:58:02 –> 00:44:58:24
Got us off there. So
00:44:58:29 –> 00:45:00:10
Should we do that at the end? We
00:45:00:10 –> 00:45:02:18
Can. Well this one unit just and then we’ll then we’ll it’s just, oh
00:45:02:18 –> 00:45:03:14
Geez, interject. Okay.
00:45:04:23 –> 00:45:14:11
The unit, you know where there’s a buck with one cheater on both sides is about 30 inches wide. Where is that unit? What’s that unit? Unit
00:45:14:27 –> 00:45:15:18
44 in
00:45:15:24 –> 00:45:20:26
Colorado. Okay. Alright. You’re a liar. Okay, next one. What are we talking about? It’s hot
00:45:21:15 –> 00:46:17:19
Idaho. Yeah, probably the the, just the quick and dirty on on on Idaho Moosh even goat is they, they create two year regulations for those. They approve ’em in two year segment segments and this is the second year of that. And so there’s not, not any major changes once in a while if they have to make an emergency closure for a sheep unit, if they’ve done it for goat units and things like that, they do that. But they haven’t done that for 2020 or the second year into that. You know, keep in mind last year they did away with the paper applications. You’ve got to actually apply online or through an office deadlines. April 30th, you got April one to April 30 to apply. Biggest takeaway no point system in Idaho if you choose to apply it’s kind of expensive, you know 155, $60 by the time you buy a, a hunting license and online fees and then you have to pay the $2,100 point permit fee for moose, sheep, and goat upfront.
00:46:18:11 –> 00:46:48:20
I charge you a convenience fee for doing all that. $41 non non-resident application fee. Geez. All said and done. Ding ding, ding ding. You’re probably up to 220 bucks or more to apply non-refundable so it’s not cheap and you don’t get a point for it. Some people love to have something when they spend money. They don’t like to just spend money and have nothing to show off. But you do have, what we do tell people is for that money, you did have pretty good odds comparatively to draw a tag compared to other states that where you, where you don’t
00:46:48:27 –> 00:47:36:20
That’s right. You know, they make you choose deer, elk, and antelope if you choose those. You can’t do sheep, orgo or moose but you can do sheep or go or moose and if you do one of those you’re done for the whole state. So anyway, great opportunity for drawing odds. Our members draw a large portion of the Idaho sheep tags every year. I’m talking six outta nine at times on good years. It’s unbelievable. We get up to 10% of the total sheep quota and that would be Californians and Rockies together. They’re not saying you get 10% of the calories and you get 10% of the Rockies, they’re saying 10% total. Those can all be rocky tags. And so anyway, and it’s up to, we’re not guaranteed there’s enough non-resident applicants. We meet our quota most years. So anyway, great opportunity. We cover it.
00:47:36:26 –> 00:48:31:18
It is a great, it’s a great state considering those by far the most popular of those three species is the sheep. But you know, it, it’s hard to ignore. Like Jason said, we talk to more people every year that probably draw that per per tag issued or per, yeah, roughly 90 to a hundred total tags. Nine of which can go to non-residents. We talk to a lot of non-residents that draw, you know, license app clients. Whereas well as our regular clients of Epic Outdoors that do their own apps, the moose odds are really, really good. You got 80 plus units to choose from. Geez. So when you spread out, you know, 500 plus bull moose tags throw over 80 something units, the opportunities are endless. I mean the table alone for the moose, all those units grinder, there’s a lot of units there. There’s a lot of units to consider. Some of them are not worth printing in the magazine. But we do, we do. So that you’ll stay away from those. It some, ’cause there’s a lot of zeros on the
00:48:31:18 –> 00:49:29:00
Harvest and it gives you some basic odds and you know, where you can look at drawing odds, harvest success, the spread an or things like that to be able to make good quality decisions. I, I drew up there in one dash two, Bronson and I went up there. We’ve talked to you about it before. Killed a 40 what, one or two, three or something. Yeah. Three inch or was not a big bull. So when you look at these and you see 40 inch or it doesn’t mean it’s gonna be a big bull. Who knows how it’s gonna be built, whatever. And so, but it does just give you, it just kind of indicates it’s an indicator of size without having to Boone and Crockett score every single moose killed. And so anyway, lots of opportunities. If you, again, if you choose moose, you’re not applying sheep, you’re not applying goat, you’re not applying for the quality. Deer, elk can antelope, you can do, you know, deer units that are unlimited in quota. And so, you know, it’s a little bit of, a little bit of a caveat there where it does allow that. But generally speaking, if you do moose or goat or sheep, you’re not doing anything else.
00:49:29:04 –> 00:49:29:20
That’s right.
00:49:31:05 –> 00:49:37:11
I also like the age, you know. Yeah. My kids have went up there. A couple of my kids killed their first deer up there in Idaho.
00:49:39:11 –> 00:49:39:18
10
00:49:39:18 –> 00:49:46:29
Years old. Of course we didn’t. Yeah. You know, we haven’t covered deer elk yet there in Idaho, but I don’t, I’m kind of a fan of Idaho. Yeah. You know, I like it.
00:49:46:29 –> 00:50:31:12
They stay for kids. They give ’em a price break on the hunting license as well. But if you don’t wanna put ’em in for sheep or moer goat, ’cause maybe they’re young, they’re just getting going hunting, pay attention to us later on in the, in month of May, when that opens up for the deer, deer, elk can antelope draw. We’ll cover that when the time comes. So goats good odds as well. They draw about four, four non-resident tags it looks like this year, can go to non-residents and you know, they have about 200 total non-resident applicants up there for, you know, the number of different units. And so odds aren’t terrible. Again, no point system quality goat hunts, they’ve got a few units that are, they’re killing bigger goats than others. The most part, they’re just good representative goats. Keep in mind they are gonna take your money up front.
00:50:31:19 –> 00:51:19:06
So the deadline’s April 30th, even though we cover this in the March issue, the magazine, it’s our recommendation to wait towards mid, mid-April or later just so they’re not hanging onto your money quiet as long. ’cause they do take, you know, two grand plus from you. So real quick before we play the name of that unit, ’cause I think this is something we’ve been waiting for a little bit as we do cover the Montana Deer and Elk draw in this March history, the magazine, the biggest change to keep in mind is that the forever it feels like the deadline to apply for that’s always been March 15th, that’s been moved to April 1st this year. And there’s no paper applications. The fact that there’s no paper applications to process, they’re still gonna get the results out by mid-April. So move the deadline back about 15, 16 days and get ’em out the same, at the same time as they always have.
00:51:19:29 –> 00:52:25:17
The biggest thing to keep in mind on deer and elk, and we don’t wanna beat it over too much, is you can’t just cherry pick and put in for the best limited entry deer and the best limited entry elk units and get points for them. You have to first at the same time simultaneously apply for a general season deer or elk combination or deer elk combination tag in conjunction with picking your limited entry special deer and elk units. And if you are successful in the limited or the, in the general season combination drawing, then you’ll be considered for the special deer, elk tags if you apply for ’em. If you’re not, you’re gonna get points formula for them. But a couple years ago, Jason, they instituted the points only application period much like Wyoming has starting in July through September. If you’re interested in building some points for down the road, especially like for elk archery, elk hunting in the breaks, and you don’t want to play the expensive game of drawing the general tag and turning it back from an 80% refund all the time and spending that money just to have a chance, you might just build some general season bonus points or preference points as well as points for the bonus point we’re
00:52:25:17 –> 00:53:11:17
Now. Yeah. And it’s getting tougher and tougher to draw that general, it’s a, it’s a great opportunity for guys that just wanna go kill game and, and it’s getting tougher. And so, you know, anymore, you know, where it’s preference on the, on the general, you know, guys with the most preference win, so to speak. And so it’s taken, it’s taken a point generally. And so anyway, there’ll be a time when it’ll take a couple, two or three points and so just be, be aware of that. I think it’s worth doing that point. Oh, only application period is July one to September 30, you know, well worth doing so anyway, make sure you do that. I think it’s a, a good opportunity to go up there. There’s some big bulls harvested in Montana in large part they’re killed, you know, private or near private. It takes some, you know, takes a little bit to figure it out.
00:53:11:17 –> 00:53:46:06
We’ve hunted up there a little bit. We were on private, but there is plenty of public land country region three, you know, Bozeman, all that country. Dylan, Bozeman. There’s a lot of good, you know, public land type archery, elk hunting opportunities. And so anyway, they do have a, a couple of special units, especially from Yielder that kill a few giants. And so if you’re gonna apply you might as well be, you know, throwing in for those limited entry units as well. We cover those in the tables. But anyway, that’s the basics for Montana. Anything to add there Bronson?
00:53:46:07 –> 00:54:24:20
No, that’s pretty much a quick and dirty breakdown of the March magazine. You should have it. If, if you’re not a member, obviously give us a call 4 3 5 2 6 3 0 7 7 7 or you can join [email protected]. If you join, we’ll usually get that magazine, that first magazine out to you within the next day or so. Unless it’s over a weekend we’re not here. So if we can get that out to you quick, we’ll usually pri more priority mail it right out to you. Love to have you member if, if you’re not, and get the rest of the magazines as they come out monthly from here through June as well. So where’s that? Leave us. Where are we at?
00:54:24:23 –> 00:54:29:14
Well, let’s see. I don’t know what do, what does the, what do the listeners want? Do we know?
00:54:30:16 –> 00:54:30:23
No.
00:54:31:14 –> 00:54:32:12
Okay. What do we want?
00:54:32:20 –> 00:54:46:24
Because I’m frankly wondering after the last couple podcasts, if they’re wondering if they think we’re trying to, to leave the hunting consultant industry behind and try to just be, be standup comedians. We’re not. I know just,
00:54:47:14 –> 00:54:53:11
There’s just a lot of interesting people that work here. Namely Devin and Wyatt. Okay. Chris. Not we
00:54:53:11 –> 00:55:06:13
Gotta throw Chris Chris the other day. The story. Is that other podcast online Chris? The one that we did? Yeah. Alright, so the last podcast we put up the three bachelors have a story about that triple decker home that they all live in rent from.
00:55:06:26 –> 00:55:08:22
Can you imagine being fly on the wall there
00:55:08:26 –> 00:55:17:02
But don’t but don’t talk to each other in and frankly somebody’s gonna take a bull there. These are friendly fire. At some point these
00:55:17:02 –> 00:55:26:16
Guys are best friends, but they don’t know each other. Yeah. And it’s our job to get ’em to know each other. That’s right. And if you were a fly on the wall, you’d probably be dead by now because the heater’s out. That’s
00:55:26:16 –> 00:56:25:17
Right. Well and if you’re, you better take cover because they’re running down ready to do some damage thinking they got a b and e on the bottom floor and breaking, entering. Oh. Anyway. And, and they come round it’s head. They’re both two guy guys, you know, ready to do damage to something somebody. And man they, you know, scare each other. Anyway, it was a listen to that podcast. It was good. But anyway, to finish on this thought, we’ve, we’ve named, we’ve got a little segment where we call name that unit. I’ll kick it off only because you know, in the spirit of the toilet paper shortage that we all have, well not all but Utah, come on. I’ve heard it since southern Arizona too. Have gun calls from people down there. They’re Costco people running out like crazy. But in the spirit of the to toilet paper shortage, name that unit one that you’ll most likely use your tag as toilet paper at the end of the hunt.
00:56:28:24 –> 00:56:32:25
A I would hope it’s an Arizona tag. ’cause it’s sticky on one side and they would stick to your palm.
00:56:34:23 –> 00:56:35:01
Whoa.
00:56:36:15 –> 00:56:36:24
That
00:56:36:26 –> 00:56:42:25
Is stop. Okay. That’s pick one in Arizona. That’s a good point. I don’t want that stuck in my hand.
00:56:43:17 –> 00:56:43:24
No,
00:56:43:26 –> 00:56:47:13
But the, the tag stuck. Oh yeah. You can’t get it off. I get your point.
00:56:48:02 –> 00:56:53:14
No, you leave a dry spot at the very corner so you can peel off and put on a new one.
00:56:53:24 –> 00:56:55:24
I’ll just stick to Juniper. What’s
00:56:55:26 –> 00:56:56:11
Juniper?
00:56:56:11 –> 00:56:57:08
Juniper, you’ve
00:56:57:08 –> 00:56:57:12
Done that.
00:56:58:01 –> 00:56:58:28
Who hasn’t? Oh,
00:56:59:03 –> 00:57:05:24
Juniper. Who me? Oh, I cut my sleeves off first. How about just using cotton glove?
00:57:05:27 –> 00:57:08:02
Hey, let’s get back on. Let’s name that unit.
00:57:08:13 –> 00:57:09:26
Okay, let’s do it. Where,
00:57:10:25 –> 00:57:24:07
What’s a tag that you’re most likely if you got, that’s what’s gonna happen at the tag by the end of the hunt. Mm. Jason, you might have one of those in your pocket this year. I dunno. Yeah,
00:57:24:13 –> 00:57:27:16
It’s possible. I ate five outta six last year.
00:57:27:27 –> 00:57:28:06
What?
00:57:28:29 –> 00:57:29:22
I ate a lot of tags.
00:57:30:11 –> 00:57:30:20
I know
00:57:31:22 –> 00:57:42:00
I ate a lot of tags and they, I could use those first and hopefully I don’t have to use any as bump fo this year. Anybody, anybody want venture out bu
00:57:42:01 –> 00:57:42:13
Fodder?
00:57:42:26 –> 00:57:46:07
Well, anybody else wanna venture out? What are you gonna, where do you I
00:57:46:11 –> 00:57:54:22
The question I asked the question. So the, the asker usually doesn’t ask answer his own question. So I’d just like some input. I mean, it’s
00:57:55:10 –> 00:57:56:18
22 late elk.
00:57:58:18 –> 00:57:59:28
Okay. Yeah, that’s a good one.
00:58:00:16 –> 00:58:02:01
Probably. Possibly. Possibly.
00:58:02:04 –> 00:58:04:19
And I’m sure there’s listeners out there that will crush us and,
00:58:04:28 –> 00:58:18:06
And if so, send, well there was, that had good hunts that’s, there was actually a couple of guys that, that had good hunts but, but trophy from a trophy mindset I would say you’re gonna eat your tag. Okay. Yeah. What else?
00:58:21:02 –> 00:58:22:12
Couple of the late arteries.
00:58:23:07 –> 00:58:24:18
Oh yeah. Like which ones?
00:58:25:23 –> 00:58:26:24
There’s only a few of them.
00:58:29:08 –> 00:58:36:14
I mean, you’re not supposed to hunt elk in November with a bow. You’re not, you’re not. I was always taught you hunt deer in November and elk in September. That’s
00:58:36:14 –> 00:58:37:22
Right. But,
00:58:38:14 –> 00:58:43:18
But anyway, that seems to be an opportunity. And we’re gonna see, we’re gonna see how that turns out. Are
00:58:43:18 –> 00:58:43:23
We
00:58:44:23 –> 00:58:47:26
Somebody is, yep. There’s a few members that have drawn.
00:58:51:15 –> 00:58:51:24
Okie
00:58:51:24 –> 00:58:54:13
Dokey. Lie. Lie. Okay. Where else we at?
00:58:54:28 –> 00:58:55:28
Hey, somebody else, huh?
00:58:55:29 –> 00:59:03:00
Take it. How about an elk tag that they have? They have leftover tags for the Arizona strip. Oh,
00:59:03:02 –> 00:59:08:12
For elk. Oh that was the per those 700 or whatever Chi abs that are left over six.
00:59:08:17 –> 00:59:15:18
How about those guys? How about those guys? Yeah, that isn’t worse. There’s a couple of bulls hitting waters that guys are hunting for Deere.
00:59:15:18 –> 00:59:18:22
Yeah, that was two to three years ago. Okay. Okay. But
00:59:18:28 –> 00:59:21:10
And and they’re selling tags. Bronson? I
00:59:21:11 –> 00:59:35:28
Isn’t there aren’t those nearly? And now don’t quote me some Arizona resident ’cause I would never poach an elk. But aren’t some of those seasons nearly year round? Oh yeah. On that tag. Oh, because we’ve been, last year we saw elk on the Kibab, remember? Yeah. Hunting turkeys in the spring. Okay. We
00:59:35:28 –> 00:59:36:08
Could,
00:59:36:08 –> 00:59:41:17
And I think it was, I ran into trucks. I saw live, you saw flesh of an elk
00:59:42:04 –> 00:59:43:10
And it’s incredible elk track. And
00:59:43:10 –> 01:00:02:14
I ran to it, a husband and a wife in a jeep busting drifts. And they were hunting elk. And I’m like, what? Wow. And I checked it, remember? And it was open. It was open. And Ty’s, Ty’s like you might, well you mean we could have shot that? I’m like yeah, it was a shed bull. It was a shed rag horn. You could tell Dink. I’m like, dive what? It’s come on. Ow. It’s basically
01:00:02:14 –> 01:00:03:06
A cow. Come on.
01:00:03:13 –> 01:00:05:28
It had nubs like that. It shit, shit bull. It’s gonna provide,
01:00:06:17 –> 01:00:09:29
But that would provide meat for Devon’s new family. Okay,
01:00:10:08 –> 01:00:24:12
Well and it’s already down. Well you couldn’t, you, you could already package it and put it in a cave salt, dry it or whatever The, the Oregon Trail Trail. Oregon Trail was, have that down in Arizona in a cave somewhere. Waited ready for when he got there. Coulda, shoulda have, would’ve, could
01:00:24:13 –> 01:00:25:23
Have’s. Right. Okay. But,
01:00:25:23 –> 01:00:33:23
But that is the winner. Might you could not get a better that that, is it even called the limited opportunity or is it called worse than that? I don’t know.
01:00:34:07 –> 01:00:35:18
It’s called non-it tag.
01:00:36:00 –> 01:00:42:22
Okay. It’s like we don’t want to give you one of these and call it a real permit. So we’re calling it a non permit. But take one and pay please. First
01:00:42:22 –> 01:00:48:16
Come, first serve. Here you go. That’s right. Not a viable opportunity. Anyway. Let’s, I’ve got one for you in New Mexico dear.
01:00:49:09 –> 01:00:49:16
Oh,
01:00:50:14 –> 01:00:51:14
You’ve been on this hunt.
01:00:52:04 –> 01:00:52:11
Me?
01:00:52:19 –> 01:01:01:12
Yeah. You have what? Yeah. Yeah. I took your kid on it. 23. Dear Youth,
01:01:04:04 –> 01:01:07:22
He did the, the only bright thing. Two, two things. I think they
01:01:07:22 –> 01:01:10:07
Give a couple thousand tags on other seasons there.
01:01:11:14 –> 01:01:25:01
’cause it’s after the regular hunts, right? Yeah, the regular, we’ll call ’em adult or anybody tags. So they give you, it was over Thanksgiving we put our kids in there. You had a kid that was probably 10 or 11. Colton had already drawn a different one.
01:01:25:01 –> 01:01:38:18
Four deer limitation. You guys saw, we saw a one by two spike by two I think. And I was like thinking in the back of my mind. Does it have to have on both sides? Both, yeah. Four on both sides. Yeah. Because if it does, we’re tapping out
01:01:40:08 –> 01:02:03:00
The only, my boy was nine on that one and we saw Coyote the first day and he smoked it and that made his trip. But a couple days later we saw just two by two. Just the basic, the most basic a fores that you can see. And he crushed the sucker. ’cause he’s been shooting squirrels. And my kid was jealous. Jack rabbits. Yes. That’s a winner. But I’ve got one. This is for a couple other gentlemen in the room
01:02:05:01 –> 01:02:05:16
For Chris.
01:02:05:28 –> 01:02:09:01
Chris, maybe I’m still in your thunder. You wanna ask this question?
01:02:09:29 –> 01:02:10:25
Let me tell you the question.
01:02:13:18 –> 01:02:18:18
This is another Arizona or New Mexico deer question. What unit can you go and
01:02:18:18 –> 01:02:26:08
Expect to hunt? Mule deer that resemble COOs. Deer because of size. Oh no, come
01:02:26:11 –> 01:02:28:06
On. What? John, come on.
01:02:28:17 –> 01:02:30:28
John perked up. What are we talking about? John?
01:02:32:14 –> 01:02:37:08
John. Oh my god. John do you wanna venture a guess? Yep. Where?
01:02:37:21 –> 01:02:43:16
36? No, 38. 38. That’s what it was. Got it wrong. It’s been like 15 years.
01:02:44:01 –> 01:02:45:05
38. Yeah.
01:02:45:14 –> 01:02:45:23
Yeah.
01:02:46:04 –> 01:02:46:24
38.
01:02:47:07 –> 01:02:49:23
I killed a mule deer. It looked like a cous deer. It was so small.
01:02:49:23 –> 01:02:54:16
You did kill it on that. Where’s the picture dude? Use that on the social media post.
01:02:55:00 –> 01:03:18:08
I don’t know if we got a picture of it. Hey, I’ll get you a picture. It was the craziest thing. It was the last, on the last day. On the last day. And I told Chris if it’s, if it’s brown, it’s down. I mean it’s, it’s the last day and it sucked every bit of it. We hunt, we hunted our guts out and we were, we were walking out, I looked over a ledge and there was a deer sitting right below me on the ledge. I was gonna climb down like
01:03:18:12 –> 01:03:19:20
Close like that. Close. Yeah.
01:03:19:20 –> 01:03:21:06
It wasn’t even 20 yards away.
01:03:21:29 –> 01:03:22:07
Yeah.
01:03:22:13 –> 01:03:25:26
And I didn’t have down, just blow it up. Boom.
01:03:26:25 –> 01:03:28:00
And you brought home jerky,
01:03:28:00 –> 01:03:31:16
Brought it smoked meat or whatever it was. So small salts meat. Well
01:03:31:21 –> 01:03:39:24
What else? Name this unit. A unit where quality has moderated quite a bit.
01:03:42:25 –> 01:03:44:02
Wow. How much time do we have?
01:03:44:29 –> 01:03:45:26
I think there’s a list
01:03:45:29 –> 01:03:46:06
Of
01:03:46:23 –> 01:03:47:10
All day long.
01:03:47:21 –> 01:03:48:01
There
01:03:48:01 –> 01:03:49:08
Is, is there a wrong answer?
01:03:49:14 –> 01:03:51:12
Yeah, I don’t know. Is there, I was a
01:03:51:12 –> 01:03:55:29
Unit Chris killed a 203 inch in. That’s moderated a little. Yeah, it’s
01:03:55:29 –> 01:03:56:12
Moderated
01:03:56:12 –> 01:03:57:07
A lot. 35
01:03:57:18 –> 01:04:00:02
I would say is moderated. I think. Yeah.
01:04:00:03 –> 01:04:04:05
It’s always got the potential ’cause it’s such great genetics. But man, they’ve crushed it with tags,
01:04:04:05 –> 01:04:09:08
Haven’t I? They have 18. Yeah. 11 to 11. Wyatt’s F 22
01:04:09:21 –> 01:04:11:01
At 22 to the list
01:04:11:08 –> 01:04:18:12
Of that. I mean it feels like I got lucky and killed the last buck standing there. Yeah, it’s rough right now. Feels like. Yeah.
01:04:18:12 –> 01:04:18:18
Huh.
01:04:18:22 –> 01:04:27:07
A lot of just, but I’d go back in a heartbeat. Think about it. It was a pretty fun hunt. Those were, that was a good time, huh? It’s
01:04:27:07 –> 01:04:29:05
A pretty fun hunt. ’cause I shot a 2 0 6.
01:04:29:06 –> 01:04:32:12
Well Bronson, it was more than that. We had a good time.
01:04:33:09 –> 01:04:34:20
We, we did. We did a good time.
01:04:34:28 –> 01:04:39:02
We helped others kill you. Helped a lady, huh? Oh yeah. Think about that. I
01:04:39:02 –> 01:04:40:18
Forgot I helped a lady. That
01:04:40:18 –> 01:04:41:05
Was pretty impressive.
01:04:41:09 –> 01:04:41:22
Really?
01:04:41:28 –> 01:04:43:20
Was it second to last morning? No,
01:04:43:23 –> 01:04:45:01
It was the last morning.
01:04:45:24 –> 01:04:53:20
Remember? I’m like, yeah, I’m like, call you on the phone. And I’m like, Hey, what are you doing? You’re like, oh, I’m gutting a deer. I’m like, come on.
01:04:54:13 –> 01:04:56:28
He killed one. No, no, no. I
01:04:56:28 –> 01:04:59:02
Didn’t. So you, so you drove tell us the story. Well
01:04:59:02 –> 01:05:48:08
Yeah. I was up there glassing and, and I was up on this knob, got outta the truck. It was glassing, you know, but you couldn’t see. And as it gets in the light, I could see a truck was probably 300 yards down ahead of me. But I’ve been in the dark and I didn’t know if anybody was in it. And all of a sudden I see a buck between me and that cut up through, through the saddle right across the road down into this big burn. And, and it’s just a buck, you know, it’s a nice, nice four point or whatever. And then I see the light come on in the truck and it wasn’t that dark, but I could still tell, oh somebody’s in there and they’re getting out. And it was obviously they saw the buck powow, they kill it. So I’m like, okay. And I see this lady walk over there to the buck and then she walks back to her truck and I can see her out on her phone walking back over. And I’m like,
01:05:48:16 –> 01:05:49:10
Oh, she’s
01:05:49:10 –> 01:06:12:29
Alone. She’s all by herself and she’s trying to call somebody for help. I shot up deer and I need some help. And anyway, I glass for probably 10 minutes and I looked down, she’s still telling, like, I better go down there soon. Anyway, so I drove down there and she’s like, yeah, I don’t have a knife. And she’s by herself and I’m like, oh. Oh really? O okay. So I haven’t gutted a deer. I don’t know how long it’s been since I’ve done, if
01:06:12:29 –> 01:06:15:23
You wanted to gut it knot. Oh yeah, the gutless method. Well, and
01:06:15:23 –> 01:06:17:25
That’s gonna take you while, right? Yeah. You’re,
01:06:17:25 –> 01:06:24:14
I’m be there. You got game bags? No, I, the gloves. I don’t have the Craig check gloves to go clear up to my armpits. What?
01:06:24:19 –> 01:06:24:28
And there
01:06:24:28 –> 01:06:25:00
Is,
01:06:25:12 –> 01:06:26:14
I don’t, no game bags. Usually if
01:06:26:14 –> 01:06:27:00
You’re quarter
01:06:27:00 –> 01:06:33:24
It, you got game bags or other, you can’t just throw quarters in the back of your truck with dirt and everything. Right. So
01:06:35:00 –> 01:06:36:01
A good Samaritan in you
01:06:36:05 –> 01:06:40:13
Gutted it. And I was elbow deep by the time it was over. Yeah, it had been,
01:06:40:13 –> 01:06:45:16
You’re reaching up for the diaphragm. Doing everything. I did it all. She’s wanting the heart. The liver, huh?
01:06:45:26 –> 01:06:50:28
I don’t remember that but, but we drug it back to the truck. Got it in the truck.
01:06:51:02 –> 01:06:52:23
Was it in a truck or was it an S u v.
01:06:52:23 –> 01:07:00:12
Little. A little truck. A little truck with so much gear in the back that you could barely fit the deer in. ’cause it was a big bodied deer. It was a
01:07:01:05 –> 01:07:01:07
Colorado,
01:07:01:08 –> 01:07:06:29
It was a nice deer. It was a Colorado puck and we better got it in there. It was legs were shooting straight in the air. Where
01:07:06:29 –> 01:07:08:10
Was she from? Back? Like yeah,
01:07:08:24 –> 01:07:16:07
She’s from that area. But she was back east working and basically flew out and borrowed a family’s truck to go out hunting. ’cause you
01:07:16:07 –> 01:07:17:11
Know, and didn’t have a knife. Yeah.
01:07:17:11 –> 01:07:20:05
Didn’t, didn’t have a knife, friend, whatever. Anyway, so, and luckily for
01:07:20:05 –> 01:07:21:24
You, we’ve got epic knives in
01:07:21:24 –> 01:07:26:16
Epic. I had one in every seat console on the truck. So Yeah. Probably gave
01:07:27:01 –> 01:07:27:28
Us of the truck has knife.
01:07:28:01 –> 01:07:42:02
I probably left her the knife. But anyway, how did we get talking about that? But anyway, that was 22 last year or two years ago. I guess that was experience we had there. That was my, that was fun. It was the last day of the hunt. And then we watched a guy, I think that night crush another book. You know,
01:07:42:07 –> 01:08:13:16
We had seen, I’d seen earlier and super turned out to be a good friend. Yeah. Brought that guy that shot one in front of you in 22 is like a good buck. And you’re like, Jason, I think this is a good deer. Then I drive up, he gets crushed and you show me the video clip and I’m like, that thing’s got 19 inch G twos. That thing’s really boxy. It’s pretty, those eye guards look four inches tall. Man that looks like 20 inches of mast. Wow. That’s a, that’s a 12 inch G four. That was dude, that’s an 11 inch G three. The beams look hit. That’s a long beam. Deer goes past of his nose. It,
01:08:13:20 –> 01:08:15:00
It was a solid 180 bucks.
01:08:15:03 –> 01:08:15:10
It
01:08:15:10 –> 01:08:16:25
Feels like 190 fiver to me.
01:08:16:25 –> 01:08:18:01
No, it, no it was not.
01:08:18:07 –> 01:08:20:18
But it was a really nice spot. Spot.
01:08:20:18 –> 01:08:25:02
I called you over here for a reason. Did you think I was calling you over here for a dink? I’m thinking no, I would’ve been shooting.
01:08:25:10 –> 01:08:34:26
It was the last night. And I said, all right Carter, if you get over here, maybe I’ll shoot this deer if, if by the time you there probably five minutes. That thing was toast pumpkin.
01:08:35:01 –> 01:08:36:11
And the sage crushed it. He
01:08:36:11 –> 01:08:47:04
Crushed the thing. It was toast. So that’s a unit that’s happened, happened a couple times, but where would you guys say you guys have been there done that? 35 would probably have to happen. You got shots ringing out everywhere in that, how
01:08:47:11 –> 01:08:48:29
This rips off your owns scab.
01:08:50:25 –> 01:08:51:04
Yeah.
01:08:51:15 –> 01:09:01:14
How about name this unit? A unit where you figure you would see the most? Pumpkins. Well honey,
01:09:01:26 –> 01:09:02:01
18.
01:09:02:12 –> 01:09:02:16
18.
01:09:03:14 –> 01:09:05:11
That is a pumpkin infested man.
01:09:05:18 –> 01:09:05:29
Every,
01:09:06:01 –> 01:09:12:25
I remember every, I think almost, almost every deer that we got on there was somebody else that we saw on the day.
01:09:12:25 –> 01:09:17:17
Yeah. Watching. Didn’t you, didn’t you have a near death experience with an elk running by you? Yes.
01:09:17:20 –> 01:09:23:28
I was gonna say unit you are most likely to get shot at. And that’s the same unit. That’s the unit also 18. Tell us that.
01:09:23:28 –> 01:09:26:08
Didn’t you have a bull run by bag horn
01:09:26:13 –> 01:09:38:05
Ran? Chris and I were, I mean we were hearing shots already and this stupid elk comes right next to us and they’re still shooting at it. It couldn’t hit it. I don’t know how far away they were, but we hit the deck and we were
01:09:38:05 –> 01:09:38:19
Literally
01:09:38:21 –> 01:09:39:26
Laying on the ground literal You
01:09:39:26 –> 01:09:40:23
Literally were laying down. Yeah.
01:09:41:00 –> 01:09:43:26
Watching the elk. How close is the elk? Come by us. And he’s like, I don’t know where to get,
01:09:43:29 –> 01:09:46:10
I bet at one point it was probably 50 yards from us. Yeah.
01:09:47:01 –> 01:09:51:02
And people were shooting at it and people were shooting at it. Red don style the whole time. Oh yeah.
01:09:51:07 –> 01:09:54:10
And see he can’t, his mind is on one
01:09:54:22 –> 01:09:55:02
Thing.
01:09:55:20 –> 01:09:57:01
Red Don. Well
01:09:57:01 –> 01:09:59:19
He’s been checking K S L updates for the coronavirus
01:10:00:11 –> 01:10:01:06
During the podcast.
01:10:01:19 –> 01:10:02:04
We’re like
01:10:02:25 –> 01:10:08:10
All better. Let him go prepare, get some matches and white get white guess. Do
01:10:08:10 –> 01:10:09:16
You got anything to add, Devin?
01:10:10:26 –> 01:10:14:02
I’m good man. I just hope. Hope none of us get sick.
01:10:18:19 –> 01:10:20:20
It is on your mind, isn’t it?
01:10:22:21 –> 01:10:33:24
You guys have been talking about it all day because I’m in my office, I hear you guys talking about quarantine something and burning your clothes or something. I dunno. That was something
01:10:33:24 –> 01:10:34:26
Else about that. We didn’t
01:10:34:26 –> 01:10:40:02
Talk about that. Wait a minute. Your clothes, John has burned clothes. Yes. That’s for another podcast.
01:10:40:16 –> 01:10:45:14
Oh, that’s for a tips and tactics podcast about lightning your load. Yeah.
01:10:46:27 –> 01:10:58:00
Geez. You know, one thing I was thinking about these monsters today is, well, and, and we’ve talked about sugar pops and the na, you know, kind of a more of a natural high that sugar pops give you. Meaning
01:10:59:11 –> 01:11:00:07
Non diet pop
01:11:00:09 –> 01:11:10:24
With sugar in it. Right? A regular fully leather pop. But like the monsters feel like a synthetic high gives you lots of energy. You’re crazy, you’d never sleep. You’re
01:11:10:24 –> 01:11:10:29
Just
01:11:10:29 –> 01:11:22:24
Crazy. Right. But it didn’t ever give you real value as food. You know what I mean? And that’s the way I feel about some of these. Sometimes I’m like, it feels synthetic to me. You know? Does that make sense?
01:11:23:06 –> 01:11:24:19
Yeah, it does. So versus versus
01:11:24:19 –> 01:11:26:16
Pepsi that’s got sugar and normal
01:11:27:05 –> 01:11:27:16
Water.
01:11:28:08 –> 01:11:29:14
Yeah, it feels
01:11:29:14 –> 01:11:31:00
Like a food really.
01:11:31:12 –> 01:11:35:01
Yeah. So anyway, I, I don’t know, it just kind of crossed my mind, not so
01:11:35:07 –> 01:11:42:01
So was it, did you have an epiphany? Are you turning over New Leaf? Is this the last monster we’ve ever seen you drink? Is that what you’re saying? I
01:11:42:01 –> 01:11:58:01
Don’t know. I don’t feel they have very similar vitamins and things that prenatal vitamins do. And I’m kind of like one of those things that you’re like, okay, this is a false advertisement.
01:11:58:07 –> 01:11:58:25
It’s a trick.
01:11:59:01 –> 01:12:01:10
It’s a trick. It’s a trick. You know what I mean? Yeah. Tips
01:12:01:10 –> 01:12:02:02
And tricks.
01:12:02:17 –> 01:12:13:04
Anyway. No, just, just synthetics. I was just thinking about, well really Jana went to the store, loaded up the office with the important treats and
01:12:13:08 –> 01:12:13:20
Snacks
01:12:13:20 –> 01:12:17:22
And all that. It was concerning that she bought more monster than anything else. That was just a concern to me.
01:12:18:10 –> 01:12:24:17
I’d say great employee. Are you gonna Yeah. Are you gonna chastise her for that tonight when you get home? I don’t know.
01:12:24:17 –> 01:12:27:02
Tell me. No, I would never chastise her.
01:12:27:14 –> 01:12:31:24
Well, just making sure ’cause we’re gonna out vote to belt you on that.
01:12:32:01 –> 01:12:33:00
We should give her a call.
01:12:33:13 –> 01:12:36:17
Joking. I dunno if that’s a good idea. Go
01:12:36:17 –> 01:12:37:14
Start calling and just,
01:12:39:04 –> 01:12:45:06
We better wrap it up. Move the white mic once you’re on a synthetic guy right now. Remember? I’d
01:12:45:06 –> 01:12:46:08
Love to give her a little grief.
01:12:47:01 –> 01:13:08:18
No, not on a No. It’s a special place in heaven for that one. That’s right. Head for the 14 trucks that she’s got in her driveway. Anyway, well, I can’t think of anything else either. Appreciate you listening. Hopefully you’ve learned something today about the March issue of the magazine, about what we do here at Epic Outdoors. And till next time.
