You are listening to the Epic Outdoors Podcast, brought to you by Fierce Firearms, epic Outdoors choice for custom hunting rifles.
00:00:20:04 –> 00:00:25:18
Hey everybody. Jason Carter. Adam Bronson, of course. Logan’s at the keyboard. Bronson, it’s just you and I today. How you doing?
00:00:25:28 –> 00:00:30:05
Doing great. Be better in about a week. But we’re, we’re in the thick of it right now.
00:00:30:06 –> 00:00:51:11
Yeah, we are. We’re in the thick of it Western big game. We’re right, right here. This is kind of some of the most exciting times for you and I, because this marks the start of the scouting season in two months. We have got a big portion of the heavy lifting of the app season over with, and we’re now looking forward to scouting, planning, all of those kind of things. You know what I mean? It’s
00:00:51:11 –> 00:01:04:09
That, it’s at that phase right now too. A lot of states to apply for still right ahead of us in the next roughly 30 days, well, two months we’ll call it, but, and here come the end of April or mid-April, we’ll start getting results back. So making plans.
00:01:04:26 –> 00:01:06:24
Making plans like it’s a job
00:01:07:01 –> 00:01:07:15
Because
00:01:07:15 –> 00:01:10:06
It is, this isn’t part-time for us. This is full-time. What do you got? What do you
00:01:10:06 –> 00:01:13:11
Got? Go ahead. Oh, I just wondered, Logan, what do you got on your hand there? I,
00:01:14:25 –> 00:01:16:29
I got a little finger cast on me. Logan,
00:01:17:03 –> 00:01:17:25
Did you have a little
00:01:18:03 –> 00:01:18:25
Owie? I did
00:01:19:21 –> 00:01:21:01
Happen to you. I’m not
00:01:21:02 –> 00:01:21:12
Had an
00:01:21:15 –> 00:01:23:11
Accident. Log Bear had an accident.
00:01:23:11 –> 00:01:27:12
How’d you get, how’d you get that on a middle finger? Splint on a middle finger? That begs a lot of questions.
00:01:27:18 –> 00:01:31:21
Well, there’s, there’s those axe throwing places and then those axe throwing places.
00:01:31:26 –> 00:01:33:08
You think that sounds tough, right? Oh
00:01:33:08 –> 00:01:35:27
Yeah. I threw it out. Chopped it
00:01:35:27 –> 00:01:38:06
Off. No, there’s nothing tough about this story.
00:01:39:06 –> 00:01:39:23
Okay, well,
00:01:39:23 –> 00:01:41:05
Let’s have it all right. Whatever. Let’s
00:01:41:05 –> 00:01:47:20
Do it. And so with those ax throwing places, you can go in into a room and smash TVs and computer screens or whatever.
00:01:47:24 –> 00:01:50:25
So it used to be just an ax throwing place here, at least here in Cedar. And then,
00:01:51:00 –> 00:01:52:21
Oh, now they’ve got, what do call that?
00:01:53:00 –> 00:01:53:03
A
00:01:53:05 –> 00:01:54:06
Rage room? Yeah, rage room.
00:01:54:14 –> 00:01:59:14
What, what would you, how would you define the term rage room? What is that, what’s the purpose of that in this world?
00:01:59:23 –> 00:02:04:17
I, I guess there’s a lot of pent up aggression in people. And you can pay $30 and go let some of it out.
00:02:04:26 –> 00:02:08:23
30 bucks. Yeah. Wow. That’s bad. I think it’s these, what can you do in there new,
00:02:08:26 –> 00:02:18:05
The new generation that they don’t exercise. All they have, they’re like doing their, yeah. And at some point your body needs to exercise and go do Yeah. Go, go break stuff. Yeah. Out. Have an a
00:02:18:12 –> 00:02:21:18
Let it out shot. Yes. That’s good. My, okay. So they
00:02:21:18 –> 00:02:25:11
Gave me like a big old three foot pipe wrench. Heavy. And,
00:02:25:14 –> 00:02:26:21
And you’re on a date, right? Oh,
00:02:26:23 –> 00:02:46:12
I’m on a date. Yeah. We, I did this for a date and about, this was the first thing we did. And about five minutes into the date, we were in that room. And I hammer, swing, ax swing, that big old pipe wrench onto a tv. And as it comes down, my finger gets stuck between the top of the TV and the pipe wrench. And I just smash it right on that top knuckle there.
00:02:47:18 –> 00:02:51:06
I’m gonna go out on a limb. Loie bear. Don’t become a framer.
00:02:53:06 –> 00:02:55:03
I just don’t think that’s good with the hammered
00:02:55:22 –> 00:02:59:11
Or a industrial sized plumber. Put the piper
00:03:00:00 –> 00:03:02:22
Physical labor stick to computers. Let’s stick to computer. Don’t do physical labor.
00:03:02:28 –> 00:03:05:19
I’m gonna stick to the desk job. I feel safe there. There’s no,
00:03:06:02 –> 00:03:08:24
That’s, that’s your safe place. My office is my safe spot.
00:03:09:04 –> 00:03:44:10
And you have to wear glass proof coveralls and gloves and masks when you do that. And so when I did it, it just felt like I honestly ripped my fingernail off. And so I was waiting for the blood to come through my glove. And of course, I’m on a date, so I not, I’m not gonna let anybody know that that happened. Yeah. Just suffer through the next 30 minutes. And we get out of the, out of the room, our time is up and she goes to the bathroom before we start throwing ax. And while she’s gone, I take off my glove and look and there’s no blood. But it is like crooked. Yeah. Like it goes straight up and straight down in a triangle. That’s your
00:03:44:10 –> 00:03:45:05
Bird finger. Yeah.
00:03:45:05 –> 00:03:47:06
It’s, you know, it’s a necessary finger. No.
00:03:48:09 –> 00:03:49:00
Unnecessary.
00:03:49:08 –> 00:03:51:24
And, and, yeah. So you knew
00:03:51:24 –> 00:03:52:21
Right then you had
00:03:52:23 –> 00:03:55:23
Problems. I knew. I knew it was broke. And so I, I
00:03:55:23 –> 00:04:01:15
Wasn’t gonna do anything. So now it’s like, how do I get out of this with grace? Like, like how am I gonna, how do I, like, how am I gonna be a big tough guy? Yeah.
00:04:01:25 –> 00:04:08:25
I, I told her that I, that I smashed it and it was probably broke, but we finished the date. I wasn’t, she told me we could go to the hospital and I said, I wasn’t about No,
00:04:08:25 –> 00:04:09:21
Come on. Then
00:04:09:29 –> 00:04:12:00
Open went straight to the emergency room. I did,
00:04:12:07 –> 00:04:17:24
I wasn’t gonna do anything about it, but my parents told me if I didn’t get it straightened out, it’d be disfigured so
00:04:18:24 –> 00:04:20:28
Away with it. And sure enough, you went. And then what’d find
00:04:20:28 –> 00:04:27:09
Out it’s broken in two places on the, on the top of the knuckle. Pretty good fracture, and then a pretty good one down in the middle. What I
00:04:27:09 –> 00:04:32:00
Find interesting though, is you found out that this old gal, she could protect you.
00:04:32:17 –> 00:04:45:23
Well, she went way crazy at that place than I did. Yeah. She like had, she had a, a big old hammer and she got up on a table and jumped off and smashed the teeth off. Jumped off, yeah. Jumped off the table and smashed the TV screen. Did it
00:04:45:23 –> 00:04:48:03
Make you nervous? Could you imagine closing your eyes at night?
00:04:48:07 –> 00:04:49:03
I was nervous. I don’t like,
00:04:49:04 –> 00:04:53:24
Could sleep. Like let’s just say you got married. I know it’s far out. Let’s just say you did.
00:04:54:14 –> 00:04:55:15
Who discipline The kids.
00:04:56:05 –> 00:05:00:04
Okay. A who’s gonna discipline the kids? She’s probably gonna discipline you a
00:05:00:04 –> 00:05:04:12
After that 30 minute rage room. I, I already knew I would not have the pants in
00:05:04:12 –> 00:05:08:04
That. Could you sleep with both eyes closed with this gal
00:05:08:23 –> 00:05:12:04
Next to No, I, I’d remove all tables and hammers from the premises immediately.
00:05:12:12 –> 00:05:12:23
Is there,
00:05:13:03 –> 00:05:18:09
Is there, has there been another date? I mean, are we talking about something in past tense now? Or is this still a fostering?
00:05:18:09 –> 00:05:19:23
Yeah. Yeah. I went out with her last night.
00:05:20:08 –> 00:05:22:01
Okay. So you can choke about this
00:05:22:18 –> 00:05:24:01
With your little finger. Yeah. Yeah.
00:05:24:01 –> 00:05:24:06
It
00:05:24:12 –> 00:05:24:23
Wast or
00:05:24:27 –> 00:05:28:29
Whatever. I had to put together a dresser last night. Little something, a splint, I think A splint,
00:05:29:15 –> 00:05:30:25
Whatever it is. Cast. Wow.
00:05:31:12 –> 00:05:34:06
Cast. Wow. Well, the things they got for entertainment these days. So,
00:05:34:18 –> 00:05:38:11
So do you think, why did she rage so hard? What, what do you, what would you get? What? An ex-boyfriend.
00:05:38:17 –> 00:05:41:27
I asked her what she was angry about and she said, I don’t know. It was just fun. So I
00:05:41:27 –> 00:05:42:13
Don’t, it was fun,
00:05:42:24 –> 00:05:43:25
I guess. I
00:05:43:25 –> 00:05:44:16
Don’t know. That’s
00:05:44:16 –> 00:05:45:00
Scarier.
00:05:45:04 –> 00:05:46:15
It felt like it felt like a fake if I
00:05:46:15 –> 00:05:50:17
Had had to do it again. Bronson, if you had to do it again, it’d be smart to take your old gal to the rage room for about,
00:05:50:17 –> 00:05:55:22
It’d be, it’d be, it’d be scarier if they say, oh, I’m not mad at anything. It was just kicking the butt. I love that. Yeah.
00:05:55:25 –> 00:05:56:04
I love
00:05:56:04 –> 00:06:01:28
That. Instead of having a real pinned up, one thing she was trying to get over and then it was over. I’ve, yeah, no, this is
00:06:02:05 –> 00:06:05:24
Just, you’re trying to find out if a future wife’s gonna be abusive to you. That’s
00:06:06:04 –> 00:06:08:29
A good place to do it. Yeah. Yeah. It, I learned a lot in that five minutes.
00:06:09:27 –> 00:06:16:13
Hey, but those are also the kind of gals that could put tire chains on, probably using handyman Jack. I mean, you know what I mean? Exactly.
00:06:16:20 –> 00:06:17:15
Yeah. So, you know,
00:06:17:16 –> 00:06:19:04
Build a chicken coop. We’re
00:06:19:04 –> 00:06:33:23
Gonna give you the benefit of the doubt that you saw it with your own eyes and got the own vibe and impressions and all that as an outsider. It’s still, I don’t know, weird, but, but you were there and I wasn’t. Yeah. And I, and I won’t be.
00:06:34:10 –> 00:06:35:01
Oh, Logie Berry
00:06:35:04 –> 00:06:36:00
Too old for rage room
00:06:36:00 –> 00:06:41:27
Carter. I love it. Yeah. I’m not, when we rage dad’s, when dad dad’s ticked. Right. Yeah.
00:06:42:18 –> 00:06:43:29
You guys might could use it. I don’t know.
00:06:44:11 –> 00:06:44:19
Well,
00:06:45:01 –> 00:06:45:10
Epic.
00:06:45:10 –> 00:06:48:15
Epic. That’s smash. So rare in my life, I feel like anymore right
00:06:48:15 –> 00:06:51:17
Now. I’d pull a back, I’d pull out a vertebrae or, you know,
00:06:52:06 –> 00:06:52:23
Breaking another finger.
00:06:53:10 –> 00:06:53:18
I don’t
00:06:53:18 –> 00:07:00:16
Know. Pull a hammy jumping off a table onto a TV with a pipe wrench in my hand. Something’s gonna go wrong. More than
00:07:00:16 –> 00:07:06:27
A finger. It’s not, we’re not that old, but sometimes one makes you wonder. Well, all right. So interesting stuff, Logan. Hey,
00:07:06:27 –> 00:07:11:25
Thanks for that. Updating your life. You’re welcome. It’s unavoidable. You got a big splint on your middle finger. It
00:07:11:25 –> 00:07:12:28
Sticks out. I knew, I knew it was coming.
00:07:13:00 –> 00:07:15:27
Have you made any other big purchases at the Epic Outdoor Store?
00:07:17:13 –> 00:07:18:17
No, not really. I mean, what
00:07:18:17 –> 00:07:20:13
About, what do you mean Bronson’s got you going on a
00:07:20:18 –> 00:07:30:22
Oh yeah, I did. I bought it rifle. I bought a gun. Yeah, I bought it a Remington 2 43. That thing is sweet. Is it? I shoot that thing all the time. I can’t. It’s awesome. Really? I love it. Yeah.
00:07:31:01 –> 00:07:32:19
Gee. Best gun you ever had Bronson?
00:07:33:24 –> 00:07:35:06
I owned it for like two weeks.
00:07:35:21 –> 00:07:36:10
Never shot it
00:07:36:12 –> 00:07:43:18
NIB. That’s right. Found a different caliber. I didn’t think I could find the different caliber. So I found a 20 to 50 sold Logan. 2 43.
00:07:43:25 –> 00:07:45:00
I like it. Called it a, I
00:07:45:00 –> 00:07:45:06
Love it.
00:07:45:22 –> 00:07:49:23
Money changes hands. The economy’s moving and growing. That’s, but you better
00:07:49:26 –> 00:07:57:16
Believe, you better believe Logan, that I’ve written down the serial mill of that gun and who owns the gun in case it ever gets used in a, you know, poaching incident.
00:07:57:20 –> 00:07:58:24
You can say your hands are clean.
00:07:58:24 –> 00:08:04:24
I know where I’ll know where that gun went. Okay. It’s not in, even though it, the background check was in my name. Personal transactions in Utah. Legal
00:08:05:00 –> 00:08:07:09
Guys. You don’t have to come fully clean on the
00:08:07:09 –> 00:08:08:11
Podcast. What do you mean? It’s,
00:08:08:12 –> 00:08:13:11
I mean, whatever, it’s political, whatever, whatever weird stuff that’s happened behind the scenes can stay there. No, there’s
00:08:13:11 –> 00:08:18:21
Nothing behind the scenes. I’m just saying Logan, don’t think you’re gonna get away with whatever you want with that gun. And you say it was in my name originally.
00:08:18:26 –> 00:08:26:13
You say the economy’s growing when money change sense. No, it’s the epic circular economy where money goes from Jason and Adam. It’s our,
00:08:26:15 –> 00:08:26:22
Our
00:08:26:26 –> 00:08:27:23
Back, Jason and
00:08:27:23 –> 00:08:29:25
Adam. Epic economy directly affects Adam and
00:08:29:25 –> 00:08:31:11
I I can’t go back over there anymore.
00:08:31:19 –> 00:08:39:28
Well, there’ll be something new that we call, we call Lo Logan the Hungry Fish. ’cause you throw a shiny lure in front of him, he’ll hit it every time.
00:08:40:09 –> 00:08:41:00
Every time.
00:08:42:09 –> 00:08:44:05
That’s why I don’t go over to your side, Barry.
00:08:44:11 –> 00:08:51:22
Yeah. I’ve got, he’s gonna buy a truck until Bronson started talk, talking too much. Maybe he was reeling a little too fast and he couldn’t quite catch it.
00:08:51:26 –> 00:08:54:09
He was following it. He was funny. Just wouldn’t quite hit.
00:08:54:23 –> 00:08:55:15
I think he’ll hit.
00:08:55:29 –> 00:08:58:17
You’re not, I think he’ll hit I’m, I’m pleading the fifth right here.
00:08:58:19 –> 00:09:03:04
I ha I told Sean last night and he says, don’t sell him that truck. It’s had too many hard wells.
00:09:04:01 –> 00:09:10:24
I, I’m a little nervous to buy Jason’s hunting truck, but after I know how much work went into it this year I’m a little less nervous right
00:09:10:24 –> 00:09:13:10
Now. It’s, it’s good than it’s ever been. It’s good as I’ve
00:09:13:12 –> 00:09:17:18
It’s better than new. If there was better, it’s got 108,000 and it’s better than new.
00:09:17:20 –> 00:09:20:11
If there was ever a time to buy it, it’d be before the fall. It is. Yes,
00:09:20:15 –> 00:09:29:13
It is. Before the first T post and pipe and before pounder gets thrown in the bed of the truck and it gets used in trail camera season. Okay. Before you, before the app. Its
00:09:29:21 –> 00:09:31:12
Before the next ball joint. That’s right.
00:09:32:00 –> 00:09:42:28
It’s got, well, I, I could go through the list. It’s got some stuff on it. It’s nice. Yeah. It’s tempting King Shocks alone. I alone. Little camper shell 3,500. You just keep adding the $3,000 add-ons and
00:09:43:18 –> 00:09:44:22
I’m getting all those pretty soon.
00:09:44:22 –> 00:09:46:21
You got a new truck? Yeah, for the better
00:09:46:21 –> 00:09:48:15
Pretty soon. I’ve pay MS RRP for that thing.
00:09:48:20 –> 00:10:03:04
My point is better than new tires are amazing. Alright, so anyway, moving on. We’ve got this new KOA promotion going on out there, Bronson. And everybody’s questioning are is, is it really high quality glass within the spotting scope realm? It is
00:10:03:04 –> 00:10:03:15
Pretty
00:10:03:15 –> 00:10:04:00
Extremely
00:10:04:00 –> 00:10:04:27
Hard. Pretty amazing.
00:10:05:01 –> 00:10:06:03
Extremely clear glass
00:10:06:08 –> 00:10:33:01
On each one. We try the, mostly the small end and the upper end. ’cause that’s what we use. We use, you know the big one with the 99. Yeah. As well as the smaller 55. And they’re crisp and they’re clear and they’re vibrant. Yeah, they’re awesome. We love them. And they do have a promotion going on now through, I think you can check our social media. I think it’s through May 18th I believe. Big sell on all those. If you’re looking at new spotting scope, definitely something you wanna consider here in the next roughly two months.
00:10:33:08 –> 00:10:53:25
They were affordable for being the very upper echelon optic. They were extremely affordable to begin with considering the competition. And then now you’ve gotta a sell on top of that. They’re just not gonna be beat. It’s not like let’s wait for the better sell or no President’s Day or Memorial Day or whatever. There’s Christmas or Black Friday. This is kind of the sale for the year. Yeah. Anyway. Pretty awesome. Yep.
00:10:53:27 –> 00:10:55:29
It’ll be on sale for April Fools. It’s no joke.
00:10:57:09 –> 00:11:04:29
No joke. Hey April Fools by the way, is coming up fast. Bronson, we’ve got April 1st. What’s all due on April 1st? Let’s throw it out there real quick.
00:11:05:02 –> 00:11:45:24
Yeah, I guess that was a segue. Yeah. Well first off, we’ll talk about Montana deer and elk. That’s coming up here on, on Tuesday. The first 11:45 PM I want to emphasize this is just for deer and elk. The sheep moose, goat bison is May 1st. The antelope’s June 1st. And I also wanna stress that if, if you’re not interested in applying for Montana this year, they do have the points on, you can’t even do points right now. The points only is in the summer, starting in July through September for the bonus points. And then you have till the end of the year to do the preference point, which is for their general, which just as a reminder. Yep. Don’t, don’t buy that a hundred dollars preference point this summer if you don’t intend to hunt in 2026. ’cause it’s gonna be a waste of money now. But
00:11:45:24 –> 00:11:49:18
The one thing I like about that is that a hundred dollars gives you an option. Yes. Next
00:11:49:18 –> 00:11:51:18
Gives you an almost guaranteed option next year.
00:11:51:18 –> 00:12:00:03
Next year. If you don’t apply for a tag in 2026, that point goes to zero. Yeah. Which is okay, you’ll get another point. So you’ll be at the same Yep. Level and you’ll have an option each and every year. Yep.
00:12:00:03 –> 00:12:51:22
It just gives you the option to go to two points since they are unique and that they award your points prior to conducting the draw. So if you bought one this summer for the general, you go in next year, buy your second one that’s been like a 90, it’s a hundred percent on deer only, or it’s like 90% on the elk, deer, elk combo. So keep that in mind. Deadline to apply it. It is a little bit tricky. You do have to buy a, or apply for the general licenses, either deer or elk, deer or elk combo as a prerequisite. They get you on the hook for that. They make you pray the tag fee up front. If you, if you draw that and you also then selected a limited interior, they call ’em special elk or deer, then they run that draw. If you don’t draw those special elk or deer, you had the option when you applied to check, I want a refund completely 80, well 80, 80% or I want the refund of the elk portion only and keep the deer. There’s a few caveats there, but it’s all spelled out in the
00:12:51:24 –> 00:13:13:16
Magazine. Or you can retain it, keep it, yeah. Have the option and then still get an 80% refund if you do it, turn it back by August 1st. So, so that gives you options. That’s what I like is just having the options. But I, it’s not like I’m dying to go to Montana necessarily. Although there’s been, you know, people that know it and the locals and guys that, you know, hit it hard. Locals, it’s just a little different. The drawing odds are a little, quite a bit better.
00:13:14:17 –> 00:13:30:24
Especially, especially for archery in Eastern Montana, which is where we all what we’re talking about want. Yep. Bigger bulls. Yeah. You know, it is a great state if you wanna hunt general elk in in different places. A lot of variety there from private land guided hunts to back country, wilderness hunts and a little bit of everything in
00:13:30:24 –> 00:14:01:25
Between. So many nuances when you’re dealing with Montana. You know, as far as, like we had a guy the other day, Bronson, he was like, Hey I’ve got, there’s gonna be a party of three of us and we got one guy that has a couple of points, two of us that have, don’t have any points. You know, are they gonna average ’em even if we don’t elect to participate in the point system at this point in time? And and they are going to on the preference. But if you’re going in on the bonus, they wouldn’t, you would, yeah. You would elect to not participate in the point system on the limited entry special drug units. Let’s call
00:14:01:28 –> 00:14:16:27
’em. And, and some people might ask, why would you elect to not be in for the special elk draw and use your points? Well there’s some that can be drawn a hundred percent. Yeah. They’re high private land hunts and if you’ve got points built up, but I’m wanna hunt that private land unit that’s a hundred percent draw
00:14:17:11 –> 00:14:17:28
First choice.
00:14:18:02 –> 00:14:22:04
Don’t, don’t elect to use your bonus points for elk there. You’re gonna get it and
00:14:22:10 –> 00:14:23:09
You’ll maintain your points.
00:14:23:09 –> 00:14:23:28
That’s right. You keep
00:14:23:28 –> 00:15:01:22
It. But on the general, they’re gonna use your points. If you draw tag, you’re using your points whether you participated That’s right. To get that orig that point in advance of going into the draw, you know, as you, as you did that. And so your group, keep that in mind. If you average in, look at what it took to draw on the general look at the at at where you’re at and if you’re, let’s just say you’re 1.5 Yeah. Or one you average in at one, you might, that might change who you invite into your group if you really want to go this year. ’cause without points and you elect not to participate in the system, you’d have like a 57% chance with no points or whatever. That’s right. And so you don’t have that chance if, if you have
00:15:01:25 –> 00:15:02:01
Any
00:15:02:09 –> 00:15:12:07
Fraction, somebody in your group averaged in with you. That’s right. Even if you don’t participate in the system. And so what, it’s just nonstop learning. Like there’s little things
00:15:12:07 –> 00:15:24:16
Nonstop. Montana’s known for that and they’ve actually, some of these over the last three to four years, they’ve changed. They changed. But that’s how they are this year. And again, the March magazine has it all dialed in. You got a week to apply roughly from
00:15:24:27 –> 00:15:36:01
And a pre and a preference point pertains to the general no matter what it is, if it’s deer only, elk, deer combo, elk only combo, which combo with birds and 14 other things. So, alright guy, let’s see what
00:15:36:01 –> 00:15:38:15
Else is on the first? What anything else on Montana? Very,
00:15:39:02 –> 00:16:07:17
No. Heck no. Let’s blow by Montana right now and anyway, and, and people don’t want us to give everything on the podcast, but I have a feeling we’re gonna dive into this, that we’re gonna do a deep dive into Colorado. We might, I don’t know why don’t dunno where this is going than other than consulting never ends in Colorado. Every, it feels like every week is a new conversation with the same guy. And, and I like it. There’s passion behind it because it’s a significant portion of a lot of people’s plan, hunt plan.
00:16:07:20 –> 00:16:36:23
Well and what’s it is and what’s added to that too is they, they passed a new five year season structure which didn’t change dramatically the season dates. They did add some new things for like first season deer in a few units. But what they really did is they approved complete, I guess you’d call it overhaul of their draw process beginning in 2028, Jason. And that’s caused a lot of questions. The the people that, hey, what does that mean right now? What should I be doing? You know, and how many, how many times have we answered
00:16:36:23 –> 00:17:06:18
That question? Okay, so let’s just go into this real quick. Bronson 2028, the changes in 2028 are monumental. Having said that, how do we know what the, how to quantify what those changes will mean for draw odds is dang near impossible. You’ve got hunter preferences. So what’s gonna happen is basically you, half the tags are gonna be available to people with the most points preference point system like it’s been. Half the tags will be randomly allocated with each and every point being an additional name in the hat. Okay, let’s just talk to
00:17:06:18 –> 00:17:11:21
You. So you could draw every de rail, can antelope tag in the state. You could anybody could now could. Yep. In
00:17:11:21 –> 00:17:23:16
28 you could. And, and then, and so some guys with two points would say, well I’m really a very, very intense trophy hunter. I’m gonna go in for 44 third or 44 fourth only. Or, or or a 61 or whatever. They,
00:17:23:21 –> 00:17:25:00
And now you have chance be the best
00:17:25:15 –> 00:17:38:24
In the state right now they have a chance that takes ’em out of 35 second 35 third 6 62 second. Yeah. 68 second or whatever it might be. It would totally take ’em out because that’s not their first choice
00:17:38:24 –> 00:18:27:28
Now. Yeah. First choice is for something. They are swinging for the fence that before took 25 points and they had zero chance to draw or 28 points and had zero points chance to draw. Now they get a chance. So you can have some people do that and use their first choice that, but then there’s the other side of things like yeah. Now if you’re looking at a unit that takes, let’s just say five or 10 points now Yeah. All the tags are going to those, the, the high point holders now keeping either point check or or point creep in check or maybe it’s slightly growing and then you take now half of those tags and remove them. Now you’re only gonna be taking half as many tags off the top. And some units you could see be affected if they’re not targeted by a lot of random people and all that you could see point creep dramatically increase in, in certain units because instead of drawing out hypothetically 50 tags off the top for non-res you’re taking 25.
00:18:28:12 –> 00:19:24:09
It is unique because you don’t know what those a hundred preferences are gonna look like. That’s, that’s gonna be a hindsight 20 is 2020 kind of thing. It’s, we’re not gonna know until 2028. We’ll look back and go, okay, there was some significant changes. It’s new for everybody and so nobody’s knowing what to do. So we some guys that are applying for 62, I would contend or or let’s call it brown, let’s just call it like a, a, a unit. Gosh, I I hate to throw things out there ’cause you’re gonna, you’re gonna throw some people under the bus. They, they hate, they hate it when we name their, their favorite units. But let’s just say it’s a, a unit 71. Okay. 71 7 11, something like that. That guy probably isn’t gonna be in a 44 applicant. Yeah. He he is probably really like 71 for some reason. Has friends, family there knows it maybe killed a big buck in 1953 there, what whatever it is. Right. And so his odds may be maybe affected ’cause now he’s really dealing with half. Yeah. Right.
00:19:24:12 –> 00:19:32:12
Instead of a bunch of tags out, out, out of, you know, it doesn’t, that unit’s not probably attacked attracting a ton of random draw applicants if you wanna call ’em that. Yeah,
00:19:32:18 –> 00:19:32:25
Probably not.
00:19:32:25 –> 00:19:42:16
Prob probably not. And so yeah, half of your tags now got taken out and are given to people with zero or 1, 0 2 or whatever down there. And it’s might, might make point creep worse in that unit.
00:19:42:16 –> 00:20:37:23
It might. Yeah. But then if you go to say a unit 54, okay, no, no secret there. Gun us in very popular unit 54, 55, 67, 66, even 5 51 seems to be doing a bit better. But, but let’s just say than, than it has not, not than the other units, but then it has in in past history. But let’s just say a 54 guy, that’s a, that’s a trophy guy. Okay. So that trophy guy, what’s he gonna do? He’s trying to kill a giant but, but doing it within a smaller point realm than what 44 normally takes. What’s that guy really gonna do? 40 fours or 50 fours been struggling. Yeah, no secret. No secret. There been hard ha haven’t may maybe something we don’t know about but really a 200 inches almost impossible. Right? So, so is that guy gonna go ahead and let 54 recuperate for a minute and deviate from that until he sees a change there in an uptick and go ahead and throw in for 44
00:20:38:06 –> 00:20:39:25
Bouncing another trophy trophy unit?
00:20:39:25 –> 00:20:41:16
Well he gains a point or two, you know, so these
00:20:41:16 –> 00:20:52:13
Are a lot of scenarios for people that weigh out. It’s gonna, there’s it, some units are gonna have point creep advance quite a bit. Others I will say be very unaffected.
00:20:52:24 –> 00:21:08:06
And then that you’ve got the passion. So passionate people are gonna vet this thing out fully. Then you’ve got other people that just aren’t gonna know what those changes really look like. Yeah. And they’re not too worried about it, but they’re stressed that the changes will cause them not to draw. So they’re gonna use ’em right now.
00:21:08:06 –> 00:21:10:19
Yeah. And there’s some, there is some wisdom that and you’re
00:21:10:27 –> 00:21:12:01
Than that creep in 2025.
00:21:12:03 –> 00:21:35:06
Yeah. Yeah. You, you’re gonna have some this year ’cause people that haven’t been doing it know that this next three years use your points. And so there is people kind of flaring, they, they want the unit they put in for to have the full quota going into preference over this three years because that might benefit them if ’cause they’re on the verge of drawing that specific tag and it could take more than that in 28. So we’re getting a lot of questions like that. And
00:21:35:13 –> 00:21:38:19
Not just a lot, no, a lot I would say like hundreds
00:21:39:06 –> 00:21:46:24
And getting, and getting hundreds of calls too on this next topic, which is what units can I draw second choice on? On the new archery
00:21:47:06 –> 00:22:06:24
Draw track. Okay. And the archery elk. So the big change for 2025 was, is non-residents can’t just get OTC archery elk. Okay. And so and so that then they’re saying what, what are my odds for a 62 archery elk? How do we know? How do we know? Well, you know what I mean? And it’s, that one is fairly popular. It’s probably gonna take a point. Or maybe it doesn’t take any, depends on the
00:22:06:27 –> 00:22:10:25
Quota, not second choice. It all hinges on quotas. What are those We don’t know until probably May.
00:22:10:28 –> 00:22:11:22
And why don’t we know?
00:22:11:23 –> 00:22:13:04
Because they haven’t set ’em.
00:22:13:12 –> 00:22:15:11
No, because they don’t wanna release ’em.
00:22:16:11 –> 00:22:16:19
Well
00:22:16:20 –> 00:22:51:21
They don’t want the questions in the feedback of what but guarantee you CPW wants to issue what they’ve always issued. They want the revenue. Right. And so how much feedback you gonna get from the residents? I don’t, Hey, this is me surmising, I’m, I’m, I’m I’m not anti CPWI, I mean we, we take exception to things they choose at times, but we actually have friends within the department and, and I think they’re good people. I just, you know Yeah. They have dealt with some wolf things and things that we don’t agree with. But anyway, moving on. That’s, that’s not those proposed recommendations. Quota recommendations aren’t coming out until after the deadline. Yeah.
00:22:51:21 –> 00:23:36:22
And and and there’s been a lot of people asking how many points is it gonna take to draw not understanding fully that it takes what the draw applicants pre dictate. You mean we’re only gonna know that after the draw. It’s not like, not like the points required to draw is determined by the fish and game prior to running the draw. It’s, it’s determined after the applicants apply for the hunt, the tags are awarded and they run out at two or one or zero. That’s what it takes. So like there’s no way to predict that and there’s no way to predict what units you’re gonna be able to draw second or third choice and build a point. There’s no way to do that. And, and there’s too many units. If you looked at the new list now of limited entry, we’ll call ’em non-resident limited entry archery elk units that were OTC. It’s extensive Jason,
00:23:36:25 –> 00:23:42:17
They put ’em in a separate section because resident, so they have the main section of elk draw stuff that are
00:23:42:17 –> 00:23:43:10
Drawn for everybody
00:23:43:10 –> 00:24:09:04
That’s drawn for residents and non-residents. Yeah. Then they have this stuff in, I won’t call it green, but I don’t know it is. And, and it, and this is for non-resident draws that are OTC for residents. And so there’s, they’re trying to delineate that and train everybody and all that and, and good for ’em. That’s that’s great. Yeah. But I, I’ve had people say, well I contend they’re gonna issue exactly what non-residents took last year. That may be the case. But how do we know how they determine that? Where, what unit they hunted? They can go unit to unit to unit.
00:24:09:04 –> 00:24:14:10
You, you can hunt five units. Yeah. Where does it get, do you get counted in all five of those units If you got surveyed? If,
00:24:14:20 –> 00:24:18:23
If you got surveyed, you know, you’re, you’re gonna delineate, you know, which unit would
00:24:18:23 –> 00:24:19:13
You spend the most in?
00:24:19:19 –> 00:24:35:07
Yeah. Whatever. Anyway, interesting stuff. Kind of, kind of interesting. Very complex. And this also comes into play. We have guys with 17 points, Bronson, we have specific clients that, that have done the OTC ’cause they have property, have friends with property, have leases,
00:24:35:08 –> 00:24:38:27
Hunt the same prop place every year. And now they, like they do and they’re
00:24:38:27 –> 00:24:45:06
Killing big bulls, big bulls and then they’re, but they don’t want to use that as a first choice to use up their 17 points. So
00:24:45:06 –> 00:24:46:21
They’re gonna gonna gamble with the second choice.
00:24:46:29 –> 00:24:47:07
Yeah.
00:24:47:20 –> 00:25:06:22
We’ve profusely that it may or may not happen. Yeah. And in, in every, every terminology we can muster that, that you’re probably, even with your 15 or 16 points, you’re probably not gonna kill better bulls with those points than you’re killing if you just burn ’em. First choice. Just spelled it out. However, it’s gonna be interesting.
00:25:06:24 –> 00:25:10:04
And then in the future you’re gonna have guys saying, well I could get a two 10 or 2 0 1
00:25:11:08 –> 00:25:11:15
In
00:25:11:15 –> 00:25:53:06
The, and in the random. And and, and it truly, they call it the hybrid never was really available to non-residents, with the exception of before antelope had non-resident quotas, which isn’t the case anymore. So the hybrid never really, we, we met our quota, we met our quota before the hybrid was even divvied out and it divvied out to residents. And so anyway, shorthand it, now we do the, this is a reality you could draw randomly in a two 10 or 2 0 1 because you’re in no man’s land and you, or you don’t wanna do a unit 40 with private land up high on the early archery or muzzles or, or you don’t want to go, you know, try a a 49 or a 48 or or 66 or 67 or whatever. Right. So it’s gonna be interesting on the elk side too.
00:25:53:15 –> 00:26:28:05
It it is, it’s gonna be interesting and, and it would make me, I mean we’re trained that if you apply for something and burn your points and then you find out it was a hundred percent second choice, it’s gonna kind of bum you out. But you’re not gonna know that until it’s done. And if you have minimal points or handful of points or you have a great place to hard tree hunt and you wanna make sure you get it. I mean elk points in Colorado are aren’t, and if you have a modest number or low number, don’t covet them. They, they’re nothing to like, hold on for something in comparison to say Arizona, Nevada, Utah, maybe even Wyoming. They’re not.
00:26:28:08 –> 00:26:48:22
Why? I just, I do wanna say this. I think there’s better quality on some of these. Let’s call ’em the OTCs. There’s better quality than what you initially think. Usually you think this is a fort rag horn or five point type, maybe a five by six, a first year six or whatever. Actually people care about it because they were hunting pretty decent bulls. Yeah. 300 to three 30.
00:26:48:29 –> 00:26:49:12
They, you,
00:26:49:12 –> 00:26:50:21
You can at times. At
00:26:50:21 –> 00:26:50:23
Times.
00:26:50:23 –> 00:26:52:28
That’s right. So and you and I have seen it hunting deer.
00:26:53:07 –> 00:27:17:00
Yeah. And I think over time in the, in the near future as, as people see whatever, in two or three years, see these, you know, past OTC units that are now draw, see what the points required to draw. You’re gonna have people, some of them, some of them are frankly gonna be issuing t just the same thing that that CPW did with Deere when they went to a draw. Some units are gonna give more tags than they should be by accident or whatever.
00:27:17:01 –> 00:27:18:19
And by accident they’re gonna give less than,
00:27:18:25 –> 00:27:22:22
Less than some. And you’re gonna have some units that ripe and fast and you’re gonna be like, boom.
00:27:22:25 –> 00:27:31:11
Or they do the aerial surveys and they, and for some reason they missed a herd of 5,000 in they thick forest. I, I don’t know. Or just, and they’re gonna whatever their
00:27:31:11 –> 00:27:37:06
Survey or just, they restricted non-residents more than they should have based on the data they had or their their best
00:27:37:10 –> 00:27:49:21
Gut. That’s, that’s where the hunting science comes in. That’s right. We, we’d look at these places that we know we’re under underutilized, under harvested, mismanaged by accident. By accident. That’s what it feels like. It has to be, it
00:27:49:23 –> 00:27:52:29
Happened with deer. Yes. Jonathan Basin happened a completely by accident. I
00:27:52:29 –> 00:28:00:19
Contend. Yeah. And then they also have a very vocal active sportsman’s group down there that don’t take no for an answer. And they, they get ticked man
00:28:00:19 –> 00:28:16:13
Serious. But it was also until that first winter of oh 7 0 8 crushed them. And then the, then they said, no more we’re never being that top heavy with bucks again. And, and they really haven’t. No. You know, and, and that’s trickled around the rest of the state, but they’re for a handful years unlike anything probably in our lifetime.
00:28:16:19 –> 00:29:02:28
No. And the, and the and and the biologists don’t want to go back to it. They’re just, they do not want a, a winter to happen and have wasting too many times have antlers hit the dirt without tags on ’em and, and dead, dead animals through a winter. And I, I contend what, why do we manage for that once in a while type happening anyway, whatever we, we’ve beat that one profusely over the years. Alright, so we’re also gonna have some change, bro. And you know, the sheep, goat and moose that, you know, they had a, let’s call it a janky system, you know, of weighted point, a weighted bonus point. And nobody could really wrap their head around the value of that. And so some people would opt out of, participate in the point system and I have three points. It gives me a name in the hat that’s as good as anything. Yeah. I can’t really understand what those points give me. Yeah,
00:29:03:00 –> 00:29:15:04
It was like, does the random initial random number that you were generated first is that, does that trump everything even though you do get it divided by your weighted points plus one, right. If it’s very
00:29:15:04 –> 00:29:15:11
Low.
00:29:15:13 –> 00:29:46:16
I think the contention, I think the contention was that that is, that that number was more important than however many numbers you divided it by. So in essence, in three years, yeah. They’re gonna be going for, this is for what? Sheep, moose, moose coat. They’re gonna add your weighted, your, your three base and you’re weighted together. You’ll have that many bonus points and throw that many names that you’ll have that many random numbers generated on your behalf and you’ll keep the most people. It’s like the lowest, lowest, highest whatever, whatever they rank it. But the lowest number, the best number, whatever you wanna call it, out of twenty, twenty five names in the hat. Yeah. So
00:29:46:16 –> 00:29:52:09
Knowing that’s happening also causes people to think maybe it is worth it to go ahead and buy that point.
00:29:52:09 –> 00:30:06:21
Right now it’s a hundred bucks. And and in the past it was like, I dunno how much it’s helping now it’s still a hundred bucks. It’s not easy to part with, but you can see a point system in the future where more names in the hat like, like we’re used to. Right. Like we’re used to having some
00:30:06:24 –> 00:30:09:22
Kind of mathematical advance, like a normal bullet point system indicates, you
00:30:09:22 –> 00:30:17:10
Know, your brain wraps your head around that. So that’s coming something to be aware of as well if you’re, if you haven’t been doing that for those three pieces
00:30:17:11 –> 00:30:38:29
Kind of interest. The other thing we skipped over before we take our little dive, but the other thing we skipped over is this 75, 25 plant for Yeah. Across the board for the elk and deer antelope. And so, you know, there was some where it’s like, oh, you get 20% here and you know 20, you know, 25 here or whatever. And it changed, it seemed like every other year, every third year it was changing based off of
00:30:41:10 –> 00:30:55:05
Number of factors. Resident, resident, resident, applicant demand over six points. Right? Yeah. Was what what drove it in the past kind of delineated that unit units that dropped down to 20%. Yes. And others that stayed, you know, took less than six, you know, non got up to 35.
00:30:55:09 –> 00:31:01:12
Yeah. And then you’ve got landowners involved and things like that. Now it’s a straight across the board. 75, 25. I think that’s very fair.
00:31:01:24 –> 00:31:02:07
Oh geez.
00:31:02:17 –> 00:31:03:13
I think that’s very fair. We’re
00:31:03:13 –> 00:31:04:00
We’re I’m happy
00:31:04:00 –> 00:31:09:23
With that. Overly fair maybe. Yeah. I mean it makes you feel like, I mean, versus New Mexico doing a 10, a
00:31:09:23 –> 00:31:11:17
6, 6, 10, 10
00:31:11:17 –> 00:31:14:27
Guided and residents could jump in on that in, in 6%
00:31:14:27 –> 00:31:15:22
Of How about Oregon?
00:31:16:17 –> 00:31:35:11
Well, okay, so we did the Oregon stuff. Why do we even waste the paper? Well, I, I do want to say, and residents love it when we talk down about it. ’cause they actually have some pretty good bucks for the local knowledge and guys that are willing to work. And I wouldn’t mind do, I dare say, I wouldn’t mind being a resident of Oregon. There’s some wild country in Oregon.
00:31:35:22 –> 00:31:37:17
Logan, do not delete that statement
00:31:38:18 –> 00:31:38:28
To get
00:31:38:28 –> 00:31:43:17
Taxed. I, I want that played. Hey, from the raptors here. Think it’s at some point in the future of this business,
00:31:43:20 –> 00:31:50:05
Some most people would say it’s the worst state. Do I say union? I don’t even know what that means. It’s the worst state in the west nation.
00:31:50:19 –> 00:31:54:13
Just call it the nation. Whatever, whatever. Union nation. Okay. This beloved union.
00:31:55:04 –> 00:32:04:11
Okay. It’s the worst to apply for. But honestly, honestly, the bird hunting is off the charts. The desert is amazing. Bronson, what? You’ve
00:32:04:11 –> 00:32:07:24
Got chuckers in Nevada and Utah coming out our ears. I mean, I mean for the
00:32:07:24 –> 00:32:24:05
First time it’s a 40 year phenomena. Okay? Okay. This is not a chucker heaven. It will not happen again for another who knows how long, by the way, where do the chuckers go? It’s, it’s like we have, we have a lot today. And where do they go for this fall? It could be nothing this fall. How does this happen?
00:32:24:09 –> 00:32:33:22
It’s like jack rabbits. They just die. They cycle sometime. You can’t, you hit 10 of ’em every time you go down a dirt road in Southwest desert. Okay. I dunno. And then you don’t see one for two years it seems like.
00:32:33:29 –> 00:32:35:09
I know. And then they come out of the bushes
00:32:35:09 –> 00:32:36:27
And I know it’s playing weird. They come out of the ground,
00:32:37:09 –> 00:32:39:17
Jackrabbits all of a sudden be everywhere. How does that happen?
00:32:39:18 –> 00:32:40:03
Disease.
00:32:40:22 –> 00:32:57:28
We were eating good this year or last year on chucker. Oh yeah. Yeah. There was a lot. And there still is right now. I I’ve been out and about and seen a few. It’s unbelievable. Yeah. But the guy in Nevada said he coined it this way. He says, I dang near killed 200 of them over the course of the season,
00:32:57:28 –> 00:32:58:16
The winter, whatever. Yeah.
00:32:58:18 –> 00:33:31:16
You know, wore his dog out, you know, and he goes and I said, well, I’ve heard it’s like a once in 20 to 30 years. And he goes, it’s like 30 to 40 lifetime. I mean, it’s one of those things to behold if you’re a chucker hunter. But anyway, moving on. I think Oregon for residents, easy to draw tags, easy to get tags even though they, they went from, you know, OTC to a limited, limited entry in nature. Got they. They’re glad when we talk crap on ’em, I, hey, and there’s not Oregon’s, not just Portland. Okay. Oregon. There’s a lot of wild, crazy country. It’s, it’s, it’s, it’s somewhat addictive. I’m gonna go out on a
00:33:31:16 –> 00:33:38:04
Little It it is, it is. It’s just we, we, we poo p it just because of the nonresident stingy non-resident allocation for deer outfit. It’s terrible. 5%.
00:33:38:04 –> 00:33:39:12
It’s the worst 5%
00:33:39:20 –> 00:33:47:22
Of the and half and half of that goes to outfitters. So it’s like you really, it’s hard to justify, you know? So a plan, especially with minimal points. But anyway, we
00:33:47:22 –> 00:33:48:23
Moving right on. That was
00:33:48:24 –> 00:33:51:13
A dires that was waste derailment. And we’re
00:33:51:13 –> 00:33:56:17
Only going for 60 minute. We got, all right, we got 27 minutes. Okay, well
00:33:57:23 –> 00:34:13:21
What on Colorado? Yeah. Where does that bring us? I guess deer. I mean we’re talking on deer. I mean we kind of covered the elk changes deer. Not a lot of changes. Like I said, the slight season structure change, there’s a, there’s a handful of units at first season deer, but there’s the third season’s added to a nine day. Some people, I don’t know if they,
00:34:14:12 –> 00:34:14:16
I
00:34:14:16 –> 00:34:38:27
Like it. Pay attention. I, I love it too. We’re used to that last cycle. It was back to seven. Gives you two weekends or gives you the option I guess if you wanna let a unit maybe ripen, if you don’t have the right kind of weather show up and hunt the last five or six days on a seven day hunt, you don’t feel like you have any option. You just gotta go hunt it. But on a nine day hunt, maybe you show up, you know, early first part of the week and hunt the last five or six days and hopefully get the weather and the rut starts and things like that.
00:34:39:03 –> 00:34:59:25
How do we, how deep do we go into some of these options? ’cause honestly, people could go in and amend their application and so there, there is gonna be some value to it, but well, but also people like it when we don’t disclose too much because of Epic Outdoors and our membership and, and the value there. Well of being a member
00:35:00:10 –> 00:35:22:11
Being yeah, if you go out and crush everything, you know, unit by unit, species by species and things like that, why would somebody, what would the benefit of Yeah. Being a member be and getting to be able to call and consult and get the magazine in your hands, things like that. Having said that, when it comes to Deere, the broken record is, I it has moderated so much in Colorado in the last five or seven years.
00:35:22:11 –> 00:35:23:25
But would you want to go a year without it? No,
00:35:24:06 –> 00:36:08:13
No. I, I don’t want it. Me either. So I’ll try to be there somehow. Expectations must be tempered. I I do contend we’re getting fewer calls because I think some people are realizing exactly what what we experience is the same that they’re experiencing. But they still want to try to be there. But they realize just your points don’t equate to a fantastic deer hunt in Colorado. They don’t. And very few places do. They equate that with certainty. They give you an option to hunt a unit that takes a lot of points or takes x number of points. And in some cases that means lower tag numbers than other units with, you know, it take 0 1, 2 or three. And but doesn’t mean Jason, how many people have you talked to have your burned 15 to 25 points. And I, that wasn’t worth my point.
00:36:08:17 –> 00:36:09:11
A lot of ’em, A lot
00:36:09:12 –> 00:36:09:27
The majority.
00:36:10:10 –> 00:36:13:06
But I, but I also look at Yeah, yeah, it’s true. More
00:36:13:06 –> 00:36:15:11
Than more than half say I didn’t see a buck, I I
00:36:16:02 –> 00:36:24:00
Just lackluster whatever. You know, it just, you know, it wasn’t kind of what 20 points in Utah would give you or 25 or or whatever Right.
00:36:24:01 –> 00:36:24:07
Or
00:36:24:10 –> 00:37:04:29
Whatever. Exactly. But, and so you go, you go to 44 and you’ve waited and I don’t know if weight is the right terminology. We’re all gaining points in other states too. And so it’s happening behind the scenes. I’m looking forward to it, but, but I don’t go, it’s not like I didn’t go hunting for those 25 years waiting. Yeah. You know what I mean? And so, but anyway, you go and then you don’t have the right weather, you don’t have whatever, it’s a down year for some reason it was amazing year last year in 44. I I love throwing it out there ’cause you can’t blow it up anymore. And it is, yeah. And if you don’t have the points, you don’t have the points. So anyway, you know 44 would be a prime example. I had an amazing year. I don’t know if it’s gonna be that amazing this year. Yeah, there was bucks that left over leftover bucks. But it takes us every other year cycle. Sometimes
00:37:05:00 –> 00:37:11:03
We see that. Two years ago was great. Three years ago was great year after that. Pretty pretty average last year. Last year.
00:37:11:04 –> 00:37:14:19
Again, are we gonna have an off year? Yeah, possibly. Good decent chance
00:37:14:19 –> 00:37:42:23
Of it light winter. You do, you do see that Colorado, most of Colorado is, is more winter dependent, meaning winter kill is the bigger factor versus drought with low farm crops and all that. Like we talked about in southern Utah, Southern Nevada, Northern New Mexico and Arizona. But so they’ve had a mile to average winner in most of the state. It’s not been, not been harsh, so should be good survival, but man, it, it’s hard play with a minimum points query. I, I’ve told so many people
00:37:42:23 –> 00:37:43:18
That I love that feature.
00:37:43:24 –> 00:37:58:01
Play with that and and do something in it and just don’t be so don’t fret it if you want to hunt. And a lot of people seem like they’re wanting to do it in these three years so they can get quote all their value outta their points. That’s their, you know, intention. If you’re, but
00:37:58:14 –> 00:38:34:01
If you’re a member of Epic outdoors, like go do yourself. Just a quick favor, I don’t care, just take a minute. It’s hard to take a minute. But go to epic outdoors.com, log in, then go to the drawing odds, deal with Colorado and the minimum point query. And we offer that in multiple states where you can go to minimum points dear and then plug in. Like if you had four points, I’m plugging in two to five, five gives me a hundred percent draw with five, but a partial a hundred percent draw with four, but a partial with five. So if you go click on Logan, click on that one. Let’s see.
00:38:36:18 –> 00:39:08:04
Nope, scroll down, scroll down. Let’s just get into the dms right there. We have some of these, we have dos loaded and whatnot. But anyway, go to that 15 fourth, just, just throwing it out there. Oh one, oh yt, Devon’s favorite. Anyway, scroll down. So right there is a 57% with three, but we listed it as four, you know what I mean? A hundred percent with four 57% with three. So when I have, if I have three, I load in two to two to four. Yeah because it was a hundred percent with four. But yeah, I was in the three point tier and they’re, they’re right
00:39:08:04 –> 00:39:10:09
There. That’s a percentage half, a little over half gone. Yeah,
00:39:10:11 –> 00:39:20:17
Exactly. And so anyway, utilize that and you go back, go back Logan real quick and you can sort it by the season. So like Adam said, hey, 90 season on third, I really wanna do the,
00:39:21:09 –> 00:39:22:21
I only can do second year
00:39:22:21 –> 00:39:24:19
Or whatever top click at the top over there under unit,
00:39:24:20 –> 00:39:25:17
Under any, right
00:39:25:17 –> 00:39:40:25
There, right there. Click that there’s the unit. Go over, click on season and then now, now they’re sorted by season. Go down to all the O three R’s within that point here. Boom. There’s all my O three R options right there. Yeah. And the points that it took and I get to scroll through those.
00:39:41:00 –> 00:39:57:28
And if you want to, if you’re really pinned in penciled into a corner, it’s only third season. If you go to the top, you can just check, check the under any season. You just go over there and click the third O three R right there and do it right there. And then it will only spit out the thirds if you don’t wanna wade through too much. But however you want to do it
00:39:58:13 –> 00:40:22:03
To play three R is based off of the regs going to the regs. You’ll see the third on the, on everything normal DM O 34 0 3 R, whatever it is, the O three R, there’s all your O three R’s. That’s, that’s the third rifle. Yep. O2 R, third rifle, O2 R, second rifle. Yep. Oh one a is your archery a normal archery hunt? Not a late archery or anything like that. The September archery. Yeah. No matter which species, deer, deer, elk,
00:40:22:18 –> 00:40:35:23
The play around, there’s a lot to filter through on that. You know, either by a unit like you said, or all weapons, if you’re open on anything, what’s my best quote value outta six points. I’ll hunt with any weapon, just leave it on any, and then pull some of those up.
00:40:35:27 –> 00:41:28:09
Go click on the DM oh 5 1 0 3 R. Now you click on that into, you see that one now I’ve got a map, I can see where it’s at. I’ve got the preference point breakdown the number of apps you can go over and see. There’s also a second choice option. Like you could go query all the second choices and gain a point from No, don’t do that yet. What Logan. But I’m just throwing that out that you can do that and then you’ve also got the points needed. You can look at the, the, the history on some of that stuff. So anyway, kind of, kind of interesting. You can also go and look at some of our comments on that and look how the state in general works on their point systems. All that can be accessed right here. Of course you can go to the emag, read everything we talk about in Colorado, all from the web. So I love it. Adam and I we’re consulting all day every day and we’re using that. I don’t know how many times, bro, I would say I, I probably hit this 50 times a day. I want to say
00:41:28:09 –> 00:41:32:12
It’s a, it’s a browser. I don’t close until April 2nd, let’s put it that way. Yeah,
00:41:33:00 –> 00:41:35:04
Same with Wyatt, same with Devin. Yeah, same with Josh.
00:41:35:05 –> 00:42:17:07
We’re all using it hard and you know, obviously we use it in, in our own planning too. We got, you know, between ourselves and, and and our wives, kids in-laws, whatever, Jason, we got all kinds of options. We’re, I mean, yeah, trying to burn points and they have varying degrees of points and you know, for some my wife and and and daughters, you know, that have frankly more points than, than me and my son. ’cause we’ve used them more recently. Yeah, I’m, I’m looking to maybe use some of them this year, but I, I don’t really wanna do it in a season that maybe I’m hoping to find a turn back or maybe a landlord tag in. So I’ve gotta only look at certain things for them. So you can filter this all out, all seconds or all fours or I love it. Whatever. I think I’m gonna try to carve my own time out and go to Colorado.
00:42:17:12 –> 00:42:31:19
There’s some new hunts B Bronson and, and we didn’t, we, we listed them in the verbiage of Colorado. The oh one R’s never have really offered dear. It’s generally, I I I hate to say globally, the entire state
00:42:31:21 –> 00:42:36:17
This 20 at the beginning of time. But O one r let’s say 20 years since they’ve gone to the new system, they really haven’t
00:42:36:17 –> 00:42:43:22
Now OR So on October 15 to 19, you know, five day season this year, O one R usually is elk only. Always
00:42:43:22 –> 00:42:44:29
Has been that way. Elk only
00:42:45:06 –> 00:42:49:10
Draw no matter, no matter if it’s an OTC unit. It was a draw for first and fourth
00:42:49:20 –> 00:42:52:28
Short five day kind of tail end or early post draw,
00:42:52:28 –> 00:43:08:10
First gun on the unit or tail. Now we’re dealing with deer having some options in say area six or 1 61 or 61 or 70 or just a few of these areas to spread out. The idea behind it was to, to spread out a hunter pressure congestion, buck,
00:43:08:17 –> 00:43:13:23
Buck tag numbers throughout another season. That’s so you don’t maybe have to have second and third be quite so heavy. That’s
00:43:13:23 –> 00:43:27:10
Right. And so there’s some excitement. I mean it’s new, right? New, but the, it’s a, it’s slight excitement I would say. This is a new, another opportunity. Nobody knows what the odds will be. And so a guy might sneak in but there’s not Well
00:43:27:10 –> 00:43:29:04
And you also don’t know what tags I, I mean
00:43:29:09 –> 00:43:29:16
Tag
00:43:29:16 –> 00:43:34:27
Numbers don’t know that either. If they’re gonna have 10 Yeah, 20, 50. Yeah. A hundred and some of these, I mean it’s gonna be,
00:43:35:04 –> 00:43:44:22
And if you’re talking like northern part of the state, 1 61 6, some of that country 17, all, some of those aren’t known for really high tag numbers and
00:43:44:22 –> 00:43:51:17
So no on any season, so it might be 10 tags. You might have one non-resident tag or two two, you know, in the guy in that’s right in the draw
00:43:51:22 –> 00:43:54:18
And you end up with two and you got two guys, a pair of guys with
00:43:55:05 –> 00:43:59:10
13 and okay, well that took 18 points and it should probably take that many but it, it two deep
00:43:59:18 –> 00:44:19:03
Worth’s that, but, but that’s, so you never know. It could be an opportunity if you’re okay not to draw. You would, you could, but you could try some of those. Having said that, you’re right after the muzzle season, Bronson the deer, as smart as they’ve ever been, they’re not really with the exception of that area. They do migrate that area during that timeframe or just prior, but well in that area
00:44:19:15 –> 00:44:24:04
Also they have er rifle hunts that, that go like September 30th to the eighth or ninth. So it’s not
00:44:24:07 –> 00:44:26:21
On October 1st, depending on the year. Yeah, yeah.
00:44:26:25 –> 00:44:28:15
It’s not the first rifle season. Not
00:44:28:15 –> 00:44:28:18
Really
00:44:28:18 –> 00:44:29:22
The first gun. Yeah. It’s not
00:44:29:27 –> 00:44:31:11
In 1 61 for a prime
00:44:31:11 –> 00:44:41:19
Example. Some of those. Yeah, exactly. So there, there’s a few nuances like that other units like 70, 62, 61, all those types of unit. It is the first gun hunt. It it, it absolutely is.
00:44:41:22 –> 00:44:44:18
It is the first gun hunt. But you could hunt muzzle loader prior to
00:44:44:18 –> 00:44:46:12
That. Yeah, I should. I meant right. Yeah.
00:44:46:12 –> 00:44:50:23
No, no, you’re right. Yeah, you’re right. It is the first gun hunt. But it doesn’t mean they’re
00:44:50:23 –> 00:45:02:07
Virgin deer. No. And it’s also, it also that time of year, October five to 1915 to 19 is about the time that most deer, they’re at the wiest. They have not started to drift anywhere.
00:45:03:03 –> 00:45:03:18
They’ve
00:45:03:20 –> 00:45:11:00
Shed velvet. Of course. They’re just acting like big bucks. That’s a hard, generally that’s a hard time universally in the west. I don’t like it to hunt a rifle. Mul there
00:45:11:10 –> 00:45:16:13
To touch. I like the summer pattern or a rut. And I go to Colorado. Personally, I just wanna get lucky that that’s
00:45:16:20 –> 00:45:26:18
Why we used to hunt later. ’cause we’re hunting our scouted areas in Utah or whatever, Nevada or whatever. We can hunt, you know, closer to us. We hunt those archery and muzzle when we have time to scout. We don’t
00:45:26:18 –> 00:45:41:09
Use, there are guys that hunt early that do really well. Yeah. Because they make this, they do this, what, what we do for Utah, Nevada or where whatever early tag we end up with, say even Wyoming high country, whatever, which, which is gonna happen. They make
00:45:41:15 –> 00:45:43:17
Colorado their early hunt state and they can do well
00:45:43:27 –> 00:45:46:18
And they do well. Yeah, they do well and, and so
00:45:46:18 –> 00:45:54:10
Should not be avoided if you have that on your schedule at all. Yeah. Archery muzzle should not be avoided. Underutilized in general. I would say by far under,
00:45:54:12 –> 00:45:56:01
Under, under unappreciated,
00:45:56:11 –> 00:45:56:12
Utilized.
00:45:56:16 –> 00:46:02:07
I don’t talk about, I don’t talk to an early rifle muzzle or archery guy. I probably only talk to one every four days.
00:46:02:12 –> 00:46:27:28
Yeah, I was gonna say 5% of the total calls would be those. Yeah. Or less. Yeah. Yeah. More. More archery and muzz loader. But, but yeah, those early rifles are, I dunno, it feels like people just, there’s a, there’s also, in September the whole world opened up for hunting in every state. Archery elk, most of archery deer. You know what I mean? Yeah. There’s a lot to compete with in September. It’s the whole world is, is a, is a frolicking hunters paradise. And it’s hard to be everywhere in September.
00:46:28:00 –> 00:46:29:15
I’m busy right now and I haven’t drowned. That’s
00:46:29:15 –> 00:46:34:13
Right. You know what I mean’s? Why we always joke, there should be 60 days in September, you know? Yeah. So you could get it all in.
00:46:34:22 –> 00:47:33:11
So it is, and so anyway, yeah, lots, lots going on there. And I could make an argument, Colorado deer, if a guy took me down a certain road and said, should I do this? I could say yes, and I could come up with an argument. Why? Why? Because it’s got the best genetics, even though it’s got poor age class. Why? Because it’s got great, great age class, but poor genetics. But you’re hunting big old deer that are heavy even if they don’t score. Well, I mean, I can make an argument no matter what, because each one of these areas in the state, and we’ve hunted a lot of them collectively especially. But, but even personally, Adam, you and I, and so I would say you could, I like ’em for various reasons. There’s a lot of, I could make an argument for, you know, even way down south, the Durango country. I mean, you could make an argument for about anywhere we and we keep. Yep. We’re like everybody. We keep searching for that best area. That never seems to happen. Although, yeah, we have a few of our favorites just because we’ve had good experiences there. Like anyone, if you kill a 200 or somewhere, you
00:47:33:11 –> 00:47:50:23
Love the place, place, you feel like you Yeah. Like it’s special. You feel like you go do it again. You don’t the next time usually, but, but you, it’s familiar country. You learn it makes sense. You build on stuff usually the second or third time until something just becomes obvious. This is just, this is circling the drain. I’m outta here, you know, I’m not gonna
00:47:50:23 –> 00:48:52:24
Come back. Justin, Justin, case in point, Justin kills a, you know, a 31 inch, you know, just boxy beautiful mid nineties deer in a unit. I hate it. Okay. For in my mind, it was the lowest on the totem pole for years, decades maybe. Yeah. You know what I mean? You, you and I know this. Yeah. Like, and then you hear about an, you know, or, and witness an uptick in overall age class, whatever. It’s, you know, maybe the weather wasn’t quite as bad a couple of years ago, 20, 22, that everybody thought and, and skipped over an area or whatever. And you have a, a slight uptick in age, you know, which we’ve seen in parts between wherever, you know, especially over there along the Utah border. We’ve seen a slight uptick in age in, in some of this stuff. And when we say slight doesn’t mean it’s your next best unit. It’s, it’s just the, the very small bright spots that we’ve, we’ve seen, you know, along the way. Yeah. Whether it be unit 40 or, or unit 21 or 30 or 22. And all of these units of which we’ve hunted, you know, 61 seems pretty steady, Eddie, you
00:48:52:24 –> 00:49:36:23
Know. Yeah. Well some of those like that, they, they’ve had a different form of management through a lot of years. Very, I don’t recall it, conservative, but very, I guess constant. Haven’t had huge fluctuations. Like you look at the Gunnison basin numbers, they go, they’ve gone up, then they crash after winter. Yeah. Then they bring ’em all back. Some of those, you know, Western Colorado units, you know, call ’em like, you know, ten, twenty one, thirty, thirty, forty, forty, sixty one, sixty one seventy. They just kind of stayed the same. But, so as deer maybe have, have done better in a few years, they don’t always increase tags to the same level. But then, you know, there’s other units like that that maybe have the limited, you know, some units have limited entry for elk and that’s appealing. Just so you They’re not all over the counter. Yeah.
00:49:36:23 –> 00:49:54:25
If you have limited entry elk, you just have less people on the landscape, that’s all. So like we’re seeing, we, we hunted 10, spent some time 10, 21, 22, all of that country right there. Even 11 to 11. Why its favorite, but Yeah, exactly. But anyway, and they rut early 10 there, the lack of pressure and the la that’s the second season felt like mid rut. Well,
00:49:54:25 –> 00:50:26:16
And you remember on the elk, they hunt like a, what is it, October 10 to one to 11. Yeah. Then they don’t have a second and third rifle elk for bulls. They may have some cow hunters, but you know what I mean? Yeah. They don’t follow the same bull hunting second, third, and fourth in unit units like that. Right. No. So I think that the slight absent, not even slight, the absence of of a bunch of elk hunters crushing the place. And, and the book Cliffs is kind of the same way. They’ve kind of read already on that side too, you know, of Utah. It’s just, maybe it’s just something in that region. But, you know, just, it, it’s probably somewhat pressure related too in units like that where,
00:50:26:24 –> 00:50:37:09
And, and people are like, yeah, but these no mid-November hunts. Do you, do you ever experience hard ru I would say we very rarely experience hard rut. I can tell you in 10, we experience hard ru
00:50:37:18 –> 00:50:46:06
Early, not even on a third or fourth. Yeah. Second. Yeah. Not even on a third or fourth. So that’s what we’re talking about. We’re not talking about fourths. I mean, we rarely spend time on
00:50:46:06 –> 00:50:47:05
Force, but even, even on force
00:50:48:00 –> 00:50:50:10
Some years, man, you don’t get, it’s pretty
00:50:50:10 –> 00:51:16:03
Average. We, we witnessed a little, you know, but, but yes. And third man, third, we kind of the last day of the third last year, and I’ve heard this from a couple, couple different people. We saw, I would say a significant rut because all the, all the people were gone. You know what I mean? It was the end of the season. Plus it’s the last day of the season. Deeper in November. Yeah. But then the people are gone and they just let their guard down. They feel it. I feel it. You as much as we
00:51:16:03 –> 00:51:25:17
See it, we’re down, we’re heading home. The deer feel it. Yeah. You know what I mean? There’s less in the dark, there’s less headlights, taillights, slammings of doors, everything. It just, it’s that time of year. Toilet
00:51:25:17 –> 00:51:28:07
Paper, whatever, hundreds of things.
00:51:28:13 –> 00:51:28:28
Exactly.
00:51:29:02 –> 00:51:53:19
Yeah. So anyway, but all of that country, we spent a lot of time in that country. All the stuff around Eagle, you know, still given too many tags. But it, but, but there’s, there’s hope for the future depending on tag levels. All the eagle around eagle, all the stuff around Walden and up north, you know, there was a lot of significant, you know, winter weather, Craig to Walden, Craig to Fort Collins country, you know, just a lot of significant weather.
00:51:53:20 –> 00:52:09:01
20, 22, 23, winter you’re talking. Yeah, it was, it was a big one up there. And you know, and then, yeah, slide south to Gunnison and Swatch and over to San Juan County or Dolores County. We, we, we’ve been there for 20 years. We’ve covered a lot of stuff. Carter all
00:52:09:01 –> 00:52:22:18
The, all the eighteens and stuff, not hearing great things. But there are guys that won’t leave all of that country because they had great experiences at some point. And they know it well enough. The three deer that are alive, that are old, they could, they could find one hope. They find one, you know? And
00:52:22:18 –> 00:52:31:25
So, and tags have been slashed. So it’s, it’s bound at some point somehow you feel like to make a, a rebound with the tag slashing that’s gone on, but it’s yet to it to happen yet.
00:52:32:03 –> 00:52:51:09
I love the tag slashing. Like we can talk about that with Colorado or Nevada. When we see these significant slashes and tags the year before, the year before, all of a sudden A DWR realizes the game is back. If you have a tag and you’re one of the few guys on the landscape, it’s an amazing hunt.
00:52:51:09 –> 00:53:22:07
Yeah. Whether it be, in Nevada’s case, drought is cut tags or Colorado usually is winter, winter, winter, kill cut tags. But either way before they say, oh, we got plenty of bucks to start. Yeah, let’s start cranking. It’s gotta time it. Right. You don’t wanna be the guy that’s trying to get in there after the, it was after it was a phenomenal year and they crushed a bunch of big bucks. ’cause usually the, the point creep happens. And also it’s just like point creep 44. You just don’t duplicate back to back to back. Awesome. Years in units very often.
00:53:22:13 –> 00:54:28:10
And hunter surveys in, you know, basically indicate an increase in hunter satisfaction and all of those things. And, and the division of wildlife resources in each and every state. Look at all that. And then that goes into making tag recommendations in addition to survey data and all the other, you know, science based data that they use. And so anyway, quite, quite interesting. Kind, kind of fun. And I think that’s where the hunting science comes in, is in the past you could say, well this is where I hunt. Me and my family, we hunt Pine Valley. That’s what we do. You know? And, and nowadays you’re going, okay, where, where are the hot spots? ’cause that’s not always gonna be good because they don’t want it to be good. They’re not managing it for that. They’re managing it for maximum take and still having the doughs get bred. And so, and so if you’re a trophy hunter, you have to be mobile and you have to be able to look around and be willing to try new units that are seeing an uptake, an uptick in quality or age class. And that’s what I think we’re pretty good at. We’ve done over the course of decades now. Yep.
00:54:28:22 –> 00:54:50:17
And, and sometimes you, but also we sometimes use our best judgment, wisdom, hunting science. And then you guess it like that, that I ain’t going back there. Sometimes that happens too. You don’t nail it every time. No, but there you gotta be wound, go out and do some Yeah. I don’t wanna get into bad those bad examples, but, but just safe to say, we’d learn from our mistakes and move on. Do something different, but just
00:54:50:17 –> 00:54:51:19
Don’t do it twice in. Yeah.
00:54:52:02 –> 00:54:56:03
What else do we gotta cover about Colorado? Where are we at Logan on time? We, we got 55
00:54:56:03 –> 00:55:27:17
Minutes. We’re done, I think. Yeah, I think, Adam, let’s talk a, well, okay, we can keep going in Colorado or we could talk about the weather in Utah and Nevada and, and this timely moisture that we’ve been getting on. We get a lot of questions on that too. Yeah. ’cause it goes, it goes into people’s hunting strategy. If I’m gonna do that, I won’t do this. Yeah. Should I, should I put more emphasis on Southern Utah, ponds Oaks, Nevada, or, or, or should I not? And put more emphasis over here, or even Wyoming. Yeah. And so I think it’s, the weather here dictates what people are doing too. You
00:55:27:17 –> 00:56:01:25
Know. It is, and I’m sure in a week or two, well we are going to do a, a, a more of a dedicated podcast to say Utah and Nevada. But, but we have had much better timely moisture and good ones over the last three to four weeks and with maybe another one coming this next week. Now is that going to fill reservoirs? No. Is it gonna maybe just green up feed at the perfect time and if we get more continue that it definitely could and it could lead to good, good antler growth. It was definitely a super mild winter. Super mild is a way to spin drier than dry, dry, dry. Extremely
00:56:01:27 –> 00:56:02:04
Dry,
00:56:02:14 –> 00:56:03:12
But 40 year
00:56:03:19 –> 00:56:03:28
Type
00:56:04:02 –> 00:56:26:17
Dry. Yeah. But, but I mean, they went into the, in the winter in good condition. We’re, we’re optimistic. I guess at this point. We obviously have till what May 7th for Nevada April 24th to apply for Utah. So we got some time to assess that. I guess we’re cautiously moving forward. We’re a little bit of optimism where a month, a month and a half ago it was bleak. But we have had some decent storms. Well,
00:56:26:17 –> 00:56:29:09
The sky was falling Yeah. In January for me. Yeah.
00:56:29:09 –> 00:56:29:15
It
00:56:29:15 –> 00:56:48:00
Was my favorite stuff. Your favorite stuff. Some of our stuff locally, there was just no, no end in sight. And the, the NOA predictions were bleak, you know, the, the, the weather patterns looked bleak and everything else. And all of a sudden the rain started coming. And then just overall just overcast, cool days, all of those things.
00:56:48:01 –> 00:57:19:06
Yeah. Got warm this week, but it’s, it’s normal this time of year. We get that. But then it’s gonna be right back next week, cold seasonal temperatures again, but had some really wet snow, really wet snow storms in southern Utah. Even Nevada, lots of people around Ely and other places talking about their snow till sites being 120, 140% of normal in certain parts from, from Ely North, which is, which is good. And that, that, you know, that area usually does have some high mountains so it can capture snow that the valleys don’t always either. But we’re, we have some optimism where there wasn’t much a month and a half ago. So
00:57:19:14 –> 00:57:36:29
Anyway, yeah, the timely moisture, April and May is super critical for deer. The elk, you know, like here in Utah, I mean, hey, we’re gonna have good elk hunting. Nevada’s gonna have good elk hunting. Even dry years seems to be just fine. You know, Arizona, not necessarily case, certain units in Arizona, I would say, like, you know, there, it’s
00:57:36:29 –> 00:57:37:15
All high desert.
00:57:37:15 –> 00:57:38:24
There’s no green grass, there’s,
00:57:38:28 –> 00:57:39:05
Yep.
00:57:39:20 –> 00:57:40:01
It’s a
00:57:40:01 –> 00:57:56:16
Lackluster. You get some of these units in Nevada or Utah, they can eat the valley floors and then move up and just kind of follow the green up to 10, 12, 13,000 foot high country. And they can still just kind of keep green at different phases through the year. By doing that, you’re in a high desert environment and it’s the summer and winter and all’s the same.
00:57:56:18 –> 00:57:57:24
You don’t have green grass, you don’t
00:57:57:24 –> 00:58:02:04
Have it. You don’t have it. That’s right. It doesn’t come anywhere in the unit. So it’s different. Definitely. So,
00:58:02:13 –> 00:58:31:04
And then Nevada, the, you know, they can eat on all kinds of, they have different options and you know, dry years has been great. Bulls. So anyway, but the deer, Nevada, Southern Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, New Mexico too. We’ve been concerned about, we’re kind of exci. It’s kind of exciting. I’m, I’m not saying is it probably be an average year, whatever, but maybe even slightly less than average. Who knows? But elk, I like, we like New Mexico. Well, I don’t know why we get excited applying for it. You look at the odds they’re terrible
00:58:31:16 –> 00:58:32:09
Mexico. Oh yeah.
00:58:32:14 –> 00:58:36:19
We’re talking one in 150 and we’re like, so you’re saying I got a chance, I
00:58:36:19 –> 00:58:57:24
Got away for the draw results. We’ve, we’ve killed, we’ve said it before. We’ve killed a few of our best bulls down there and on tags we shouldn’t have drawn. Let’s keep it real. That’s why we kind of like it. Yeah. It, it’s hit. You’ve hit a couple home runs. I’ve won really good one. And, and on tags you shouldn’t draw, but you did. Yeah. I mean, Paul drew a tag last year. He had no business drawn down there, so it’s when it
00:58:57:24 –> 00:58:59:07
Happens. He had no business drawing. No,
00:58:59:11 –> 00:59:02:18
I mean, the only non-resident unguided tag in. He’s
00:59:02:18 –> 00:59:02:29
Drawn some
00:59:02:29 –> 00:59:55:12
Stuff anyway, but, well, anything we else want? I, I do want to give one quick shout out. We’ve kind of been coming at you hard and this is getting into that phase of the year where it’s, there’s a lot coming. I would just want to impress upon y’all that are members to, on page nine of the April magazine, we’ve, we have our tentative application schedule and we’ve kind of have that spelled out so you can just look real quick at, at what’s due in order. All the way, all the way through. Love it. March, april, may, June, July. Kind of keep it in order. You could take a picture of it, put it in your calendar, whatever you want. But April magazine, EEGs out there, been out there for a week or 10 days. The, the paper mag should be showing up here. It’s very, very soon. Page nine in there. But go to that, use it often and use it just kind of across stuff off to kind of see stuff coming over the next two months. It’s kind of come out you really hot and heavy. It, there’s a lot coming up. A lot. It’s
00:59:55:13 –> 01:01:02:10
Fun. It’s fun spring’s out there. I i, I opened the door. IOI went outside, I opened the door. What did I hear? Birds chirping. I love that. The older you get, they’re coming back. I don’t know what it is. I don’t know what it’s like you and rainbows. It’s like, and and I, and I throw that out in just at ’em when you see a rainbow, you know, world’s not ending at the moment when you hear the birds chirping Here we are gonna, we’re enjoying another spring. Yep. And the older you get, the more value you put on waking up in the morning and making the most of today or this year. Absolutely. The next few years I, I know fees are increasing in Utah, they came out. We, we are not in favor of that. I, I, I also wanna say it’s not the end of the world. And, and, and Utah, it initially come out and here we are in another subject that we we’re gonna wrap this freaking podcast up. But anyway, that was a maximum. And the D took the DWR by surprise took us by surprise. No, it’s a reflection on us. And we we’re not in favor of it and it, so it shouldn’t be. But anyway, they’re, they’re working on it. It may not be at the max. Yeah. It’s not the end of the world. Well, you should apply this year.
01:01:02:13 –> 01:01:57:28
Yeah, well yeah. And they’ve, you know, they’re, they gotta go back to legislature now. Present some, I guess some, some data, something to ’em just indicating maybe some of the ramifications of what is just a unilateral maximum, a hundred percent increase everywhere doubling fees everywhere could do. That’s still schedule, I think it was to be signed in mid-May by the governor. But that could be some of those things, some of the fees in there, whether it be application fees or general fees during out fees, they could be tempered. Who knows? The division’s very aware of what that, the intention was to raise more money for division wildlife to buy critical, you know, habitat, winter range, whatever. And so the intentions were good, but there are some, you know, legislature may have had some unintended consequences. Like we’ve joked about, you know, the rats from a sinking, sinking ship principle. If non-residents feel like they’re gonna have to pay four or 500 bucks to maintain their points every year and apply, and that’s excessive.
01:01:58:03 –> 01:02:10:25
We agree. Oh, that is excessive. And, and 30 something, 32, 30 $5, whatever it ends up being with all the incidentals and your credit card fees and 14,000 other things. The, the non-refundable fees to apply when you can do all the species. And we have a lot of ’em here.
01:02:10:25 –> 01:02:16:10
Yeah, well, especially non-residents can do all of them. Yes. We we don’t, but they can do, I dunno, eight or 10, whatever. It’s Oh,
01:02:16:10 –> 01:02:31:11
You heap it on. Yeah. You, you, I mean you’re a lot of money. Yeah. Okay. And then you do it for women and children. That’s again, gonna tax a guy probably ought to have a, you know, a significant job. And I, and I get it. So there’s gonna be some curtail of applications, but tuned
01:02:31:11 –> 01:02:33:09
For me tuned we’ll see what the final is. It is for us in every,
01:02:34:00 –> 01:02:35:01
I’m careful for you
01:02:35:01 –> 01:02:39:01
Start, you start doing that and add the silver state, you can be three, 400 bucks per person
01:02:39:03 –> 01:02:45:21
Too. Silver state and, and a partridge in a pear tree and you get a coyote fee and, and incidental
01:02:45:21 –> 01:02:46:21
Shuckers down. Geez.
01:02:47:00 –> 01:03:03:18
You know’s No such thing. No, but alright, so anyway. Yeah. As we get going, I guess part of that I want to just say what wasn’t the general, let’s just say this. I just, for for just for an example, wasn’t the general deer tag fee like gonna be over $800 for, for a non-resident,
01:03:03:29 –> 01:03:08:13
Whatever the double was. I don’t have the fee right in front of me. I think Spike Elk tags were gonna be like $1,200
01:03:08:18 –> 01:03:33:28
For non-residents. That’s excessive. Right? Like, I’m not even interested, right? Yeah. But I would pay, I would pay the, the non-resident fee for a general deer tech and I’m one of the most critical guys there is for general deer. Like I don’t think it’s being managed correctly. I think they could do a better job. I think we do want better as a people, as a, as a bulk of the hunting community here in southern Utah. But, but having said that, yeah. What was it? It’s, it’s, well it’s gonna be in the mid
01:03:34:00 –> 01:03:38:18
400 something, well it’s four 18 last this year. Four 18. Yeah. So it’s gonna be pushing eight
01:03:38:18 –> 01:04:11:15
50. Yeah. And so anyway, but would you pay it Bronson? Yeah, I would. Yeah, I would too. And I guess that’s my point is I think all states can increase their resident fees a little bit. IIII, I’m not saying go gouge ’em, but people get wine over a $5 increase in Idaho or whatever. Lay off freaking good grief, catch up with the times. That’s part of it. And I, and, and having said all that, we don’t agree with what’s going on with the non-resident, the treating of non-resident, just an arbitrary double overnight that, that doesn’t make sense. I don’t think it’s gonna end up that way. Give Utah just a little slack. Let’s let
01:04:11:15 –> 01:04:12:05
This, let this
01:04:12:26 –> 01:05:09:27
D’s working on it. Yeah. And anyway, having said that, again, going back to a lot going on, you know, apply the Montana deer and elk, it makes sense to it. Otherwise, dew points in the summer, Colorado, everybody should be applying Utah April 24th. Everybody should be applying Kansas, eh, up to you. If you want to, there’s an opportunity for you with one point. You got a guaranteed draw. There’s a backup plan for, for some people. So anyway, in the April 30th, we come on with the Wyoming sheep, goat, moose, bison, Idaho, sheep, goat, moose, May 1st, Montana sheep, goat, moose, bison is Adam mentioned earlier, May 7th, Nevada, May 15th, Oregon, May 28th, Washington. I don’t know why we got that on the list, but hey, we do, if we’re gonna put Oregon bro, we might as well put Washington. All right. Might as well. So anyway. And on down the list and so we’re cranking it out. Looking forward to scouting. Shed hunting a little bit here and there. Do we have anything else?
01:05:10:02 –> 01:05:15:27
No, I think that’s good. Good wrap up for the day. Logan, appreciate you sharing your experiences with us on your finger, middle finger.
01:05:17:00 –> 01:05:17:13
Good luck
01:05:17:24 –> 01:05:18:25
Killing that up. The
01:05:18:25 –> 01:05:34:05
Book I’d put, I’d put i’d, Hey, you know, maybe this gal using that, she’s got a lot of energy, right? She’s got a lot of pent up energy. How could you get good use out of that? Like what? Put her to work? Let’s, let’s, maybe there’s a, a labor intensive job out there. I’m giving
01:05:34:05 –> 01:05:36:06
Her way points and 10 trail cameras. This
01:05:36:06 –> 01:05:36:11
Is what
01:05:36:11 –> 01:05:36:25
I’m, hey.
01:05:37:06 –> 01:05:37:21
Exactly.
01:05:37:25 –> 01:05:38:19
That’s a good idea.
01:05:39:12 –> 01:05:43:11
It is a good idea. Okay. What about a gas card? Have you gone that far? Would you give her a gas card
01:05:43:11 –> 01:05:44:16
Pound and a T post? It
01:05:44:16 –> 01:05:47:18
Depends on what’s on the trail camera. Maybe it’s like a, a later reimbursement. If
01:05:47:18 –> 01:05:52:09
There’s good stuff. Yeah, maybe it’s, yeah, maybe we incentivize it. Yeah. You know, find the results. Find hers fee.
01:05:52:13 –> 01:05:54:10
You find good stuff. You can have your gas back.
01:05:54:13 –> 01:05:56:24
Here’s a base fee for just running the cameras. Would
01:05:56:24 –> 01:06:01:06
She ever, would you ever let her take Yes, I like that. Would you ever let her take your truck? Oh,
01:06:01:09 –> 01:06:02:00
I don’t know that we’re there
01:06:02:00 –> 01:06:03:13
Yet. Would you give her a coyote gun?
01:06:03:22 –> 01:06:08:10
Oh yeah. Anybody can have a coyote gun. Yeah, if there’s a coyote, you gotta take all the chances. Okay.
01:06:09:19 –> 01:06:12:00
She might have another date coming, huh? Yeah. Yeah. Well
01:06:12:00 –> 01:06:13:04
We’ll see if I’m, yeah,
01:06:13:16 –> 01:06:14:18
And then you’re gonna have to test, see
01:06:14:18 –> 01:06:15:10
If she listen to this podcast
01:06:15:13 –> 01:06:30:28
Or not. Yeah, you’re gonna have to test her on if like she divulges secrets when they, ’cause sometimes gals just talk and they, oh, where’s your husband? Ah, he’s over in such and shack just crushing the place. You know? And you’re like, okay, bump the brakes. Next time. Yeah, next time. The answer is, I’m fishing.
01:06:31:10 –> 01:06:32:16
I don’t recall. I don’t recall.
01:06:32:28 –> 01:06:35:05
I don’t recall. I don’t recall. I do do not
01:06:35:05 –> 01:06:36:25
Recall. I don’t know where he sat. I can never keep track
01:06:36:25 –> 01:06:46:01
With him. What were those sayings that we love? The do not recall. And there was one other one. I can’t remember what it’s, anyway, I dunno. There’s some favorites around here, that’s for sure. Just
01:06:46:01 –> 01:06:46:18
Say they’ve been coached.
01:06:46:29 –> 01:06:48:23
Yeah. Now, oh, our G
01:06:48:23 –> 01:06:49:25
Should be with him for 30 years.
01:06:49:28 –> 01:06:50:17
Nobody even
01:06:50:17 –> 01:06:51:16
Asks You got some coaching
01:06:51:23 –> 01:06:53:28
When you’re Rh the gal, the gals don’t even get
01:06:53:28 –> 01:06:58:21
Asked. They still ask, but but they just know there’s no, do you think I could keep up with where he is at? Come on.
01:06:58:23 –> 01:07:05:16
I contend you’re not, you’re not liable in the hereafter for lie, for lying about hunting. You’re just not liable for that. Right? It’s different.
01:07:06:12 –> 01:07:07:16
It’s a different section. It’s a
01:07:07:16 –> 01:07:11:01
Different line. Yeah. All right. Whatever. Okay, everybody. Hey,
01:07:11:01 –> 01:07:12:28
Have a good week, good weekend, get applied,
01:07:13:05 –> 01:07:13:29
Blah, blah, apply.
01:07:15:26 –> 01:08:05:11
