00:00:19:23 –> 00:00:28:25
Hey everybody. Jason Carter. Adam Bronson, John Peterson, course. Logan, we got you here. How are you? I’m doing good. Good. How you doing, John? Awesome. A little bit of a late night run to the,
00:00:28:26 –> 00:00:30:01
A little bit of a late night. Yep.
00:00:30:10 –> 00:00:31:09
Yeah. To the,
00:00:32:21 –> 00:00:34:02
Got in at 3:00 AM Yep.
00:00:35:19 –> 00:00:41:20
Well, anyway, I don’t know what to say about it other than it’s very dry. I was gonna say something about that state. Oh,
00:00:42:04 –> 00:00:44:09
Me? Yeah. So dry lot lot
00:00:44:25 –> 00:00:50:18
Adam. Adam. I’m doing fine. I’m doing fine. Adam knows about everything that’s out there and never had to start his truck. Yep.
00:00:51:01 –> 00:00:53:06
I didn’t have to ruin a ball. Joint shock.
00:00:53:14 –> 00:00:54:19
How about rebuild a rear end?
00:00:54:20 –> 00:00:55:03
None of that.
00:00:56:03 –> 00:00:56:13
I did that.
00:00:56:25 –> 00:00:58:25
Truck’s not even racking up that many miles.
00:00:59:09 –> 00:01:05:19
Nah, mine blowing right through warranties left and right. So, John, you, you all right?
00:01:05:26 –> 00:01:20:02
Yeah. All right. I mean, it’s funny hunting, you know, you’re in the desert when you know you’re in on Saturday, it’s too muddy to get where you want to go. Really? It’s flash flooding and then, and then springs are dry. You go back on Monday and things are dried up. Yeah.
00:01:20:05 –> 00:01:22:17
And springs are dry. Springs are dry springs are drying start, if
00:01:22:17 –> 00:01:24:23
You looked at all your cart. Yes. Probably not yet. So you just
00:01:24:23 –> 00:01:27:18
Got home last night? Not since last night, but anything
00:01:27:28 –> 00:01:28:18
Noteworthy,
00:01:29:09 –> 00:01:30:00
I I You’re
00:01:30:00 –> 00:01:33:09
Willing toul Oh this A lot of end, end down cameras this year.
00:01:34:21 –> 00:01:35:19
There is a lot of those.
00:01:36:03 –> 00:01:43:17
I think a lot. A lot of average so far. And then some like it’s early though. The cards that I’ve seen is early. So it’s like maybe
00:01:43:29 –> 00:01:45:17
Still holding out hope on some books.
00:01:45:17 –> 00:01:46:02
Yeah. Yeah.
00:01:46:20 –> 00:01:48:05
So, we’ll you hold out hope until
00:01:49:08 –> 00:02:02:04
There’s no hope. I guess the thing that is interesting to me is where there’s no deer where I thought, oh there’s probably gonna be deer here and there’s, you know, only horses. No. And elk, you know, or something like
00:02:02:04 –> 00:02:09:22
That. You looked at your cards where it says there’s 850 files, but you’re showing 253. So maybe somebody picked your lock and deleted.
00:02:10:00 –> 00:02:12:24
No, I haven’t seen any of that, but I haven’t got any cards
00:02:12:28 –> 00:02:23:09
I had that happen. 800 pictures. I had it happen. It was like you have, you know, X amount of files. Yeah. But then the last picture number didn’t match that didn’t match it. And so I went through the middle and found some missing.
00:02:23:28 –> 00:02:24:14
Very interesting.
00:02:24:14 –> 00:02:30:09
In the middle. Interesting. Yeah, I was kind and I, and I suspected such, so then it kind of keyed, clued me into look
00:02:30:09 –> 00:02:33:15
At it now double, double throw five more cameras on that water. Yeah.
00:02:34:01 –> 00:02:35:03
So anyway, I don’t
00:02:35:03 –> 00:02:37:04
Know how, just so you, I do, I mean if that happens,
00:02:37:05 –> 00:02:39:21
I’d like to throw in some anthrax in a couple of them or something.
00:02:40:06 –> 00:02:43:11
If that happens. Again, I do have software that should recover those. Yeah.
00:02:43:11 –> 00:02:44:20
Yeah. Does it? Yeah, we’ve
00:02:44:20 –> 00:02:45:05
Heard that. We’ve
00:02:45:05 –> 00:02:46:29
Heard it. It’s good. I’m glad I there’s, I know people,
00:02:47:07 –> 00:02:48:03
You know, people we
00:02:48:03 –> 00:02:50:29
Know people that have taught people doing that. Yeah. Yeah.
00:02:51:15 –> 00:03:01:04
Well, okay, that’s moving right along bro. So let’s talk to some something way more fun. How about the Utah DWR wants your opinion on how to bring back deer quality numbers, all the things
00:03:01:10 –> 00:03:03:16
You segued. Let’s talk about something fun.
00:03:05:19 –> 00:03:06:01
Really
00:03:06:02 –> 00:03:09:21
Different. Something different. Yeah. You can use something we haven’t talked a lot about.
00:03:10:26 –> 00:03:11:07
You need
00:03:11:07 –> 00:03:49:29
To become part of the process, Adam. He’s about to lose his mind. Just, it’s just interesting. We come out with a written news release where we can now participate in, give him ideas, help the DWR Utah. DWR. This is to come up with ways to increase deer numbers because they’re an all time low. Right. Or such and such, whatever. Hey help us out. And we just barely had excruciating meetings, brutal feedback, opinions of all varieties, almost fistfights with DWR personnel and the civilian public, you know what I mean? And then here we’re, we’re
00:03:49:29 –> 00:03:58:01
Gonna come set a fight to set a five year plan last year. And then now let’s, let’s take your opinion, but really we’ll just have to keep it in the queue for four years.
00:03:58:14 –> 00:03:58:23
Yeah.
00:03:58:24 –> 00:04:17:06
It’s odd how they come out with it right now. And maybe it’s like, well Adam, we’re talking about, you know, if you wanna come up with a good habitat project that makes sense. We could do that within, between that now and then. Or maybe predator control, Adam like, you know, or some wild horse, you know, come up with some ideas on how to deal with the wild horses. I don’t know. I’m just
00:04:17:08 –> 00:04:17:18
Throw
00:04:17:18 –> 00:04:21:28
Logan, keep, keep my nut mic off. Keep it off.
00:04:22:10 –> 00:04:28:16
I, I think if they were gonna be honest about it, they should just like phrase the question a little bit different. I
00:04:28:16 –> 00:04:42:16
Just think don’t ask the public, you’ll already, you’ve heard more feedback. We’ve had more feedback. If you add up the prior 50 years of management, let’s say 2010 and earlier, 2010 and earlier, we’ve had more feedback than all of those
00:04:42:16 –> 00:04:42:21
Years
00:04:43:05 –> 00:04:47:16
Combined. Oh. In this last year alone. Like just the last, it’s sensitive right now because,
00:04:48:18 –> 00:04:54:21
But it feels like if they were honest, it would be how can we improve deer herds and also increase tag numbers.
00:04:55:01 –> 00:04:57:15
Yeah. Well they’re just gonna say, come up
00:04:57:15 –> 00:04:58:15
With ideas where can
00:04:58:15 –> 00:05:03:23
Do both what we’re talked about before your plan is tag numbers and bucks. Don’t eat fawns. And so
00:05:05:16 –> 00:05:06:11
I think my idea,
00:05:06:18 –> 00:05:13:18
Even though, even though they’re just saying like if we kill more bucks, there’s more room for fonts and more room for those And, and so anyway, there’s Where are
00:05:13:18 –> 00:05:13:22
They?
00:05:15:28 –> 00:05:16:01
I
00:05:17:07 –> 00:05:18:19
Go ahead Rosa, tell us how you really felt.
00:05:19:01 –> 00:05:27:03
What was that primitive weapon that did the Adderall Add, add, add? That is, that is my idea. That’s the only one that’s gonna work General,
00:05:27:08 –> 00:05:28:09
Don’t let any of the kids have
00:05:28:14 –> 00:05:29:17
Tag general season at
00:05:29:28 –> 00:05:30:12
Don’t let any
00:05:30:12 –> 00:05:34:11
Of no aada. They can all have it. You have things
00:05:34:21 –> 00:05:35:11
Wounded in
00:05:35:11 –> 00:05:39:15
Maine, you can have, you know, burn your points on a Henry’s AADA tag. Oh
00:05:39:20 –> 00:05:39:27
Boy.
00:05:42:06 –> 00:05:50:04
Yeah. And then, yeah, what day or two before the Archer deer hunt kicks off and during the archery deer hunt for the next week, they’re all around the state. So
00:05:50:24 –> 00:05:51:07
Yeah. So
00:05:51:07 –> 00:06:14:01
Ours starts what, August 14th down here for the southern meeting and, and the hunt starts on the 16th. Yeah. So you know, even though it’s a limited draw for the general, there’s quite a few general tags of course. Maybe more than you know, should be, but, but nevertheless, you know, just the timing is interesting. Right. On the heels of heavy discussions. I don’t even know why they wanna poke the bear. Yeah. Like be done alone. We’ve
00:06:14:01 –> 00:06:16:13
Got Yeah, youve got your plan, you got it the way you want. Why?
00:06:17:25 –> 00:06:27:05
Yeah. Yeah. So anyway, but just, just saying, if you don’t go to these meetings, Bronson and Loie Bear, then you have
00:06:27:10 –> 00:06:29:21
The opportunity to go so sick to become
00:06:29:23 –> 00:06:32:03
Part of the process. I am. You had a pro opportunity
00:06:32:15 –> 00:06:34:22
Part of the process to throw up. I’m not allowed to be mad.
00:06:35:15 –> 00:06:38:18
Don’t you have no reason to be mad? Nope. You were invited.
00:06:40:13 –> 00:06:43:22
But like your parents told you Jason, you get what you get. So don’t throw a fit.
00:06:43:22 –> 00:06:45:06
Right. I don’t know if they what they told
00:06:45:06 –> 00:06:47:24
Me. Well you’ve said that before. Long. I thought
00:06:47:25 –> 00:06:49:10
Time ago. That was a long time ago.
00:06:49:19 –> 00:06:53:18
Alright, moving you on to something else. That’s fun. Yeah, let’s move along. That’s fun. Let’s
00:06:53:18 –> 00:07:42:24
Talk about Dead Elk. I think it’s just fun. We got archery hunt coming up Bronson. We got archery hunt for all varieties. It’d be antelope. It’s cranking off August one in Nevada, at least other states as well, coming on the heels of that. We’ve got archery deer on August 10th in Nevada. That’s fun. And then Archery, elk, Nevada, Utah, all kinds of places. Archery deer here in Utah as well in August. So it’s just that archery timeframe. And we’ve got a good buddy, Dallas Lewis in Nevada that’s killed some great bulls. He and his wife. Great people. We sure appreciate them. Just fun to have good people around. And anyway, they do it right. He just, he hunts his guts out and it’d just be fun to kind of get their story from last year and any other stories we can get out of them, you know. Sure. What do you think? Should we dial him up?
00:07:44:12 –> 00:07:45:09
Send it. Let’s
00:07:45:09 –> 00:07:51:17
Give him a holler. I dunno which number to call.
00:08:04:18 –> 00:08:04:28
Hello.
00:08:05:06 –> 00:08:06:00
Hey, what are you doing?
00:08:06:23 –> 00:08:07:16
Hey, how’s it going?
00:08:08:12 –> 00:08:11:20
Have I got you on the right phone number? I’ve got a couple of numbers for you.
00:08:12:11 –> 00:08:13:23
Yeah, you got me on the right one.
00:08:13:29 –> 00:08:46:28
Oh nice. Right on. Well we kind of teed it up. Dallas, Lewis, Nevada, big Bulls. Something that you’re constantly cranking on and I know they, they turn your crank, you guys are just killing them. And anyway, just wanted to kind of get your story a little bit and your, what your thoughts are on management and the big bulls that have been in that Ely country for years and years and years on decades. I mean, clear back. Clear back in the day when I was young, which is a long time ago.
00:08:48:00 –> 00:09:20:19
Yeah. It’s been, it’s been killer. I mean I started chasing them around. I drew my first tag when I was 17 years old and just running all over the place. Had a bunch of big bulls found and just too young. Didn’t know what I know now. You know, obviously, but it wasn’t, it was one of those things that I just kind of felt passionate in when I was just a young kid. And once you get the taste of finding a couple big ones, then that’s all you can think about.
00:09:21:25 –> 00:09:55:25
Yeah. Truth to that. Absolutely all you can think about. So you, once you’ve, there was a lot to learn. There’s a lot to learn and a lot you guys have learned over the years about movement within units and boundaries and all the, you know, all the things. And, and I think you guys are finding, like what we found for Deere is some places consistently produce and, and you don’t necessarily know why. I mean, there’s some reasons for it that you can, you know, surmise. But, but anyway, just that, that learning curve over the course of time Sure. Seems to help, you know?
00:09:56:21 –> 00:10:54:17
Yeah. Yeah. And especially like, the biggest part is just when you find them early and then knowing where they go to rut and everything. ’cause them bulls will move 40, 50 miles. I’ve seen as the crow flies to go rut. Like my wife’s bull, he, he rutted up north and thought he was in a, he was in a totally different unit and we just happened to stumble upon him. No one really knew where he rutted. And she had a tag for a different unit and we ended up stumbling into him and it was just like, holy cow, he’s moved 50 miles, you know? And then we knew which one he was. We’d been watching him with the gov tag debating on shooting him and we’d already killed with the gov tag at that time. And then we had free reign on him the last week of the hunt and it was pretty good deal. And we ended up getting him and he was 4 0 1 gross and like three 90 net genius. And just incredible bull.
00:10:54:22 –> 00:11:02:07
Wow. So tell us, I guess, what tag did she have as far as not unit necessarily, just the season that she had. She,
00:11:02:13 –> 00:11:06:29
She had an archery tag. Okay. And this was back in 2019.
00:11:07:21 –> 00:11:17:11
That’s what I think. So impressive is your wife’s out getting it done with a bow and killing bulls bigger than I killed bigger, I mean it’s, it’s giant world class type stuff.
00:11:18:05 –> 00:11:48:27
Yeah. It was, I killed my big 4 0 4 bull and 2017 and we’re packing it out and driving home that night. It was like three in the morning. And she told me, she’s like, I want to shoot one with a bow. And I just told her, I said, well, you better start now. And so she started shooting a bow and shot for two years and finally drew the tag and it was on and we hunted hard for her. It’s like 17, 18 days. I was like, she’s either gonna really love me or she’s gonna lead me after this. But
00:11:50:03 –> 00:11:53:23
That’s, yeah. That’s could be an expensive hunt for a guy, you
00:11:53:23 –> 00:11:53:24
Know.
00:11:53:25 –> 00:12:01:25
Oh yeah. Yeah. If she were to, if she were to leave, that would be a problem. Right. Leave with half your assets. Yeah. A little more than half your assets if you’re in Utah.
00:12:02:23 –> 00:12:07:22
Yeah, she, she loved me more after it. I’m a firm believer, so it worked out good.
00:12:08:09 –> 00:12:36:05
Set the hook even deeper. Well, all right. So 17. I just want to talk about hun a little bit more. How did you know, how many years did you know about this bull? Obviously you were, you said you were on it maybe with the gov tag, considering it anything over 400 depending on the year, of course everybody’s taking note of the bull and whatnot and then you find him. But did people have the sheds? How many years did you know about him? Just maybe a little bit of background on that one.
00:12:36:29 –> 00:13:34:04
Yeah, I had known about him for a couple years and, but we’d really only like got trail cam pitchers and stuff of him that year. There was some guys up in the northern part of the state that had, one guy had found one set of sheds off him and he was like in the three 90 range. And then there was a couple years of sheds that were missing. And then actually a guy from Ely had found a set of sheds off him that was like, yeah, he’s three 90 something unbroke. And so we were really like looking for him. And I was actually in the area looking for a different bull that had went downhill. I ended up finding him, but he was like, the year before, two years before sheds, he was like four 17 and just an incredible bull. And then he kind of went downhill and we were like, man, scrounging looking for a net bull or a net Boone and Crockett bull. Like
00:13:34:04 –> 00:13:36:07
3 75 net typical. Yeah.
00:13:36:07 –> 00:14:27:10
Like, yeah. Yes. And then we ended up stumbling in on him and it was like, holy cow, that’s Bucky. You know? And we got in really close on him one night, got him at 50 yards and, or it was actually 40 yards, but he was kind of quartering to us and I didn’t want her to shoot ’cause she was only shooting a 50 pound bow. And he kind of busted outta there. And we didn’t see him for like three days. And then the last day of the hunt, a guy I was hunting with, he ended up turned him up. Trevor Marks actually turned him up and I was on the other side of the road where we had last seen him. And he called and was like, Hey, they’re here. And I was like, okay. So we went over there, they had already gotten to the trees and when they get into the trees we’d kind of backed out because we didn’t wanna spook him anymore.
00:14:28:04 –> 00:15:34:11
And, but it was the last day of the hunt and it was like, well if we blow ’em out, we blow ’em out. It’s all right. You know? Yeah. We gotta go in after him. And some bulls had moved, one bull had moved further north. When I got up in there in the trees, a bullet moved further to the north and we just kind of assumed it was him. And then I snuck up in there and we had a three sixties type bull at about 45 yards. And I was like, but he was like, had us pegged, we couldn’t do anything. And I was like, you want that bull? The other bull is probably like three 40. The big bull probably went to the north. And she was like, well, I’ll obviously take that one. And I was like, okay. I was like, we can’t do anything, we gotta see what he does. ’cause he is got his peg. And he kind of turned and he circled back to the south. And I was like, well, we got two bulls over to the south now. And so we just worked up in there just a little further and I did some cow calling and sure enough a cow comes out and we knew like the big bull had the cows and I was like, get ready.
00:15:34:18 –> 00:15:34:27
Yeah.
00:15:35:10 –> 00:15:52:25
And that cow come through a clearing at 50 yards. I arranged it, I hurried up and grabbed her pin. She had a option archery site. And I flipped it open and just put it at 50 yards. And he comes out, comes walking through that clearing, iHow called and stopped him and she drew back and smoked him.
00:15:53:17 –> 00:15:53:25
Geez.
00:15:53:27 –> 00:16:10:22
Ended up, wow. Ended up hitting him kind of far back, but hit the main artery and then a hind end. And we looked, give him like two and a half hours and then snuck in there and ended up finding him in his bed. And she shot him a couple more times. He didn’t even get out of his bed.
00:16:11:08 –> 00:16:33:09
Oh man, that’s awesome. The femoral artery. Wow. Well that’s awesome. What this, we should have had her on the podcast too. Tell her son, how many, how many big bows are we gonna cover today? It’s probably be like, well let’s talk about our relationship over the 17 and 18 days. I’m gonna tell you what the highlights were. Let’s just focus on the end result. The big deadbolt.
00:16:33:12 –> 00:16:35:12
She only cried a couple times, but
00:16:37:00 –> 00:16:38:29
There you got lucky. I didn’t, she got lucky
00:16:39:25 –> 00:16:42:24
At the end. She ended up crying. Happy tears. So it worked out.
00:16:43:09 –> 00:16:51:05
So awesome. That’s hunting right there. That’s hunting. And then I guess a quick story on your 4 0 4 from 2017.
00:16:52:07 –> 00:18:00:21
Yeah. So I had actually had a landowner deer tag at the time, chasing a big old buck and kind of had me not even focused on my elk hunt, but I knew where they went to rot and everything. I’d been hunting them for years. I knew where the bigger ones would end up. So I spent a lot of time scouting more or less for that deer and chasing it around, or I didn’t get to hunt it, they ended up killing it early. But I ended up, I was thinking about turning my elk tag in, decided to hunt it. Opening day comes, I’m not ready. And I was just like, I had a buddy that I had actually met down on that deer hunt, Justin Moore. And he’d never hunted archery elk. And I told him, I said, let’s come to Ely, I’ll show you where to go and I’ll go on the other side. We got talking. He’s like, I’ve been over there before lion hunting. Yeah. He’s like, so I know the roads. I was like, go up here, I’m gonna go on the other side and we’ll look. And he actually ended up finding one of the big bulls. Wow. We hadn’t even seen him. Yeah. We hadn’t even seen him since 2000. Geez. 15.
00:18:01:01 –> 00:18:01:10
Yeah.
00:18:01:22 –> 00:18:12:25
Or 14. 14. And so he’d went missing all of 15 and all of 16. He never even knew. Wow. We figured he had died of old age. And
00:18:13:06 –> 00:18:16:23
It feels like these bulls never die unless, unless Hunter kill him. No,
00:18:16:27 –> 00:18:17:19
I get like 14.
00:18:18:00 –> 00:18:23:19
Oh yeah. Yeah. Justin, he had a, Justin’s bull was th 13 years old on the tooth age. Wow.
00:18:23:25 –> 00:18:24:09
Last year.
00:18:24:19 –> 00:18:35:15
Healthy, you know. But anyway, keep going. Yeah. It just feels like they never die. You guys are following bulls for half a decade if not more. They’re big times. They’re big. Yeah. Seven or eight. Yeah, seven, eight years. Yeah.
00:18:35:24 –> 00:18:47:07
Yeah. Like and normally that’s the ones that end up, you end up killing that are big. You know, it’s pretty rare that we find one that just outta nowhere. It’s like holy.
00:18:47:08 –> 00:18:50:17
Like a big 6-year-old. Yeah. Something that just bears and blossomed. Yeah.
00:18:51:08 –> 00:19:24:11
Yeah. Usually it’s, we watch ’em within three to five years, you know, of watching ’em and then seeing how they progress and then end up finally getting our hands on ’em. Yeah. You know, and some other hunters get their hands on ’em and, which is all good. That’s just how it works, you know? Yeah. But yeah, so I had, he had texted me on our in reach and said, Hey, I got a big bull, get over here. And I had actually drove around the mountain going way too fast. I actually broke both control arms on my truck when I pulled up to him.
00:19:24:21 –> 00:19:25:05
Oh god.
00:19:25:14 –> 00:19:25:21
And
00:19:26:24 –> 00:19:29:10
What does that do? You have no steering, right?
00:19:29:24 –> 00:19:31:15
No, I didn’t have no steering. When I
00:19:31:15 –> 00:19:32:04
Pulled up to him,
00:19:34:12 –> 00:19:36:16
The wheels were like pointing out. Yeah.
00:19:37:20 –> 00:19:37:27
It
00:19:37:27 –> 00:19:38:10
Was wild.
00:19:39:03 –> 00:19:40:06
What truck was it?
00:19:41:10 –> 00:19:43:00
A 2006 Tacoma.
00:19:43:09 –> 00:19:45:11
Oh, right. Funny.
00:19:46:03 –> 00:19:50:15
One of the most abused trucks in the world, especially Nevada, history of the world. Nevada or
00:19:50:17 –> 00:19:53:25
Utah. I mean, you should not buy a Tacoma out of the state of Nevada.
00:19:56:11 –> 00:19:59:10
I started my kid on one. Yours, I could five or
00:19:59:10 –> 00:20:04:19
Six. Yeah. 1998. Oh, the Tacoma. Yeah, the older one. Yeah. You started yours on
00:20:04:21 –> 00:20:08:21
2004 or six, whatever. Yeah. But that got totaled about a year and a half later.
00:20:09:01 –> 00:20:11:18
Anyway, keep going’s another story. Keep going Dallas. Yeah.
00:20:11:20 –> 00:20:15:16
Yeah. If I, if I look for a Toyota, I just try not to buy one from Nevada,
00:20:15:27 –> 00:20:17:27
Utah. Ca California, California
00:20:18:04 –> 00:20:18:29
San Diego, something
00:20:18:29 –> 00:20:22:21
Like that. You’re gonna have a surfboard rack on the top. It’s all have to
00:20:22:25 –> 00:20:23:22
Take it off and you’re good
00:20:23:22 –> 00:20:29:10
To go. I have to deal with a little bit of sand in the carpet, but that’s about it. So yeah. Anyway. Yeah, so,
00:20:29:26 –> 00:20:41:04
So I pulled up to him and then sure enough up pulls this other truck and I’m like looking at it and it’s got Montana plates. Oh. And I’m like, what the heck? And out jumps Dan Evans,
00:20:41:19 –> 00:20:42:18
I knew you were gonna say.
00:20:43:01 –> 00:20:44:22
And I was like, no way. You know,
00:20:44:25 –> 00:20:50:09
I, I haven’t heard, I haven’t heard from Dan for a minute. Seems like he was heavy in Nevada and I don’t know, silence for a minute.
00:20:51:02 –> 00:20:57:19
Yeah. Yeah. And I like followed him for for years. Yeah. Used his sights and stuff on my bows and just,
00:20:57:22 –> 00:21:00:09
He was running a jacked up Tacoma back then, it seems like.
00:21:01:09 –> 00:21:47:04
Yeah. And I’d read, like listen to all his stories and stuff and goes, guys like that, you know, that’s kind of what got me started into like, man, I really need to focus in on this and this is what I wanna do the rest of my life. Like I need to get better at it. Yeah. Take it more serious, you know, and stuff. So I’d read stories about him killing multiple big bulls and stuff and I was just like, oh wow. You know, meet him. And so the bull I had actually that Justin had found, the bigger one he’d actually fed over the saddle and Dan didn’t see him. Dan seen this other one that was like three 70 over on the mountain. And so we were sitting there just all talking and watching that bull. And the whole time I’m thinking like Justin called me over here for this three
00:21:47:13 –> 00:21:47:27
Seventies bull.
00:21:48:11 –> 00:21:51:12
He’s, and he’s over there with a grin on his face, like,
00:21:52:08 –> 00:21:57:07
We need to make a sandwich for Dan and send him down the road. Exactly. And the whole
00:21:57:07 –> 00:22:02:25
Time I’m thinking like, I can’t believe I just destroyed my pickup to come over here and look at it. Three 70, can’t
00:22:02:25 –> 00:22:04:16
Even drive home. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:22:05:15 –> 00:22:51:29
And so we end up talking and everything and then Dan ends up leaving and he, we tell him like, we gotta go get parts for this truck. And I actually had another truck in town that I was just gonna get. And so we end up leaving and then Justin shows me the video of the bull that he had videoed that morning, the big one, you know? And I was like, oh my God, I, we ain’t seen that bull in years. And so I was like, man, he’s huge. But it was opening morning and I wanted to kill a 400 inch and I was just like, we need to go get a second opinion. Brought it to brought, came to town, got the video pulled up on my TV at my house, called in some buddies and they all looked at it and they’re like, you’re crazy, why aren’t you out there right now?
00:22:52:01 –> 00:23:45:13
You know? And so we hurried up and jumped in the truck. I went and shot three arrows at the gravel pit heading outta town at 80 yards and they were dead on. And we go up there and get hiking up in there and I get right to the saddle. I hunted there quite a few different times and kind of knew what them bulls did right there. And we got close to the saddle and I cow called and I heard the bull bugle and I figured he would bed right off that backside and heard, sure enough, I hear him bugle and I’m like, man, he’s close. And I dropped my pack, grabbed my bow, and then I realized I didn’t have my release. I’m like looking down in the valley floor and this little Tacoma sitting down there and I’m thinking, there’s no way I got time. This bull’s close, you know? So I was like, I’m gonna have to just use fingers, this is, and so I ended
00:23:45:13 –> 00:23:56:28
Up here back in the day I used, we used to try to get callused fingers each well and you just shoot a lot gloves. Yeah. But anyway, three finger glo, you know, kids nowadays Yes. Wouldn’t even understand. Right. Dallas, they wouldn’t even understand.
00:23:57:03 –> 00:24:01:21
Yeah, right. And I’d done it for years, like growing up, that’s how I shot fingers. So, you know,
00:24:02:06 –> 00:24:05:10
So, but you both now not cited in that way and all that you, you know,
00:24:05:10 –> 00:24:10:11
You gotta, yeah, it’s gonna different be loop versus fingers. It’s not gonna hit your anchor point’s different, everything’s different, everything’s wrong.
00:24:10:27 –> 00:24:28:10
Right. And that’s what I was like panicking about. And so I like literally had a radio in my hand and I looked at it and I was like, that little cord on the radio, I was like, if I put that through and then I could just slowly roll it off my finger, it’d probably kind of work as a release, you know. So I
00:24:28:13 –> 00:24:31:05
Hurried up and threw it over my wrist. Okay. And
00:24:32:01 –> 00:25:16:12
I pulled my bow back with my fingers and then I just had that little tiny loop in on one of my fingers pinch. And I was slowly like rolling it off and he come walking up, he’s 25 yards. And I was just like, there’s no way I can miss. He had no clue I was there, but it was a really steep downhill shot. And I shoot and he goes right underneath him like oh, barely, barely missed him. Goes right underneath him and he lunges forward, but he’s like looking around and the arrow went so far down the canyon before it hit anything. He didn’t even really scare him. And then I’m in a panic, I can’t believe that I just missed. So I tried the same thing and I turned back at Justin. I’m like, cow call, he cow calls the bull bugles starts raking his horns on the ground.
00:25:17:09 –> 00:26:09:13
And so I draw back another arrow and I’m like, okay, I can’t, there’s no way I can mess this up twice, you know? Yeah. And so same thing, I shoot and it’s just right on the underneath him again, same exact spot arrow goes down the canyon. Wow. And I’m like, I’m like, holy, how did I blow this? And the bull turns and swirls and goes to like run off. And I turn back at Justin. I’m like, Cal call, Cal call. And he cal calls and it was able, I had enough time to grab another arrow and he had ran down. He was kind of quartering away from me. And this time I just drew back with fingers and I was like, he’s gotta be like 40 yards and let go. And like sure enough just perfect shot bros like, like just perfect. And I could see the arrow sticking out, like didn’t get like real great penetration but like probably hit
00:26:09:13 –> 00:26:11:15
A rib on the way in or whatever. Yeah.
00:26:11:25 –> 00:27:00:22
Yeah. And I was shooting those trian hypodermics and so they make a big cut and I could just see blood spraying out of him. And so I was just like, you know, he’s definitely hit good. And so then I called everyone told everyone like, yeah he is hit, he ran down the canyon and I’d had my wife and my sisters down below and they were like class in the front face. So I was making sure he didn’t come out on the front face. They were like, he still ain’t came out. So we give him like 45 minutes. I walked down there and sure enough he’s just laying there like perfect, still looks like he’s alive, he is. Got his face down on the ground, horn’s still up, just laying perfect. And I’m like, oh man, he is still alive. So I draw back another arrow and I’m like 50 yards, shoot miss, he doesn’t move. I’m like, okay, he’s dead.
00:27:01:18 –> 00:27:03:15
Geez. Wow. What,
00:27:04:15 –> 00:27:04:22
How
00:27:04:22 –> 00:27:05:09
Does this happen?
00:27:05:24 –> 00:27:07:00
Oh, to
00:27:07:24 –> 00:27:08:18
Me somehow. And then
00:27:08:21 –> 00:27:50:04
Take, then I get down there and everyone’s like, well how big is he? Like when I had actually hit him and we were giving him time, everyone’s calling me on the radio like, how big is he? How big do you think he is? And the way them bulls over there are, you know, big body bulls. I was like, he’s either 360 or he is 400, you know, oh it’s, and so I got down there and we didn’t have a tape or anything and we’re sitting there up on the mountain and stuff and we’re just kind of guessing, but he’s just so big compact, long points. Awesome bull. And so I just grabbed my radio antenna and I knew that they were 14 inches long. And
00:27:50:04 –> 00:27:51:04
I put it to one point
00:27:52:00 –> 00:27:56:18
Imp improv improvisation in this is like, geez. That’s funny. Unbelievable.
00:27:56:18 –> 00:28:03:13
Yeah, I put it on the brow tine and just seeing how much more it had and yeah. And I was just like, he’s 400, he’s
00:28:03:13 –> 00:28:06:00
Got twenties all the way up and 60 inch boots. Yeah.
00:28:07:24 –> 00:28:11:01
Pretty soon my 48 inch bootle came off and I started doing that.
00:28:12:04 –> 00:28:18:03
I did do that. Right. Oh, pretty awesome. Wow. So he ended up, what? What’d you say? Four 17?
00:28:19:08 –> 00:28:24:03
No, four. 4 0 4, okay. Four or 3 93 net.
00:28:24:06 –> 00:28:31:16
Okay. So I had written down four 17 maybe that was some, was she a six point some, some other number you’d rattle off early. So that
00:28:31:16 –> 00:28:36:12
Was off a pool on my wife’s hunt that we were looking for. Oh okay. The guy had found the sheds
00:28:36:12 –> 00:28:37:22
Off of. Okay. Okay. Yeah.
00:28:37:26 –> 00:28:38:17
Was that a six point
00:28:38:21 –> 00:28:43:17
Dallas? But my was 4 0 4 straight six point was some little tiny crown points devil.
00:28:44:07 –> 00:28:45:15
And you said net what?
00:28:45:23 –> 00:28:46:23
3 93?
00:28:46:23 –> 00:28:47:12
3 93.
00:28:47:15 –> 00:28:48:11
And you’ve got him in the book?
00:28:49:07 –> 00:28:57:25
Yes. Yes. He, wow. He was the number three bull killed that year in the state. Biggest draw tag bull killed in the state that
00:28:57:25 –> 00:29:01:23
Year. Oh, good for you. Yeah. That’s awesome. Alright. Yeah,
00:29:01:23 –> 00:29:02:04
He was actually
00:29:02:25 –> 00:29:17:08
The bull that I was actually banking on killing. He was actually the shed, Scott found off him and he was only 3 96. So like totally lucked out that that bull was bigger than the one I actually was like hoping you on hoping to kill. Yeah. Yeah.
00:29:17:28 –> 00:29:20:24
So your wife drew her tag, right? And you drew this tag? Yes.
00:29:21:03 –> 00:29:22:09
Yeah. Yep. So I
00:29:22:09 –> 00:29:22:25
Mean And that was
00:29:22:25 –> 00:29:23:09
A draw tag
00:29:23:09 –> 00:29:33:27
Too. Yeah. Yours was a draw tag. It just makes you, I don’t know, there’s benefits Bronson to living in the dry estate in the nation. Well, haven’t cracked fingertips year round. Yeah.
00:29:34:15 –> 00:29:38:13
Oh yeah. I’m gonna try leaving my release one just one night. Just
00:29:38:13 –> 00:29:39:05
Leave it home this
00:29:39:05 –> 00:29:43:00
Year. Just see if something happens. It won’t Dallas. I promise I’ll do that one night.
00:29:43:17 –> 00:30:07:04
Yeah, do it. I’ve had it happen twice. I actually should have killed like a buck that was, if he wasn’t 200, he was 1 99, you know, change and snuck, snuck in on him and got to 40 yards from him and realized I didn’t have my release. Geez. I’m horrible with him. I don’t, I carry two with me everywhere now.
00:30:07:23 –> 00:30:09:10
Yeah. I don’t blame you.
00:30:10:02 –> 00:30:10:28
Did you kill the buck?
00:30:12:00 –> 00:30:29:06
No, I ended up, did you try taking into 22 yards from him and he swirled his head? I would. I just got too close. He swirled his head and then I thought, well when he gets up, like maybe he’ll hesitate for a minute and that thing bolted out of its bed so fast I didn’t even get a shot.
00:30:29:24 –> 00:30:30:03
Geez.
00:30:30:25 –> 00:30:36:23
But definitely if I would’ve had a release I would just hung back at 40 and just waited for him to get up, you know? Yeah.
00:30:37:18 –> 00:30:43:22
You were going in primitive mode getting within 20 with bare fingers. Yep. Yeah.
00:30:43:23 –> 00:30:49:27
Yeah. Alright, so probably should. Now let’s fast forward to this year, this last year. Maybe you should, we’ll shoot your bow
00:30:50:01 –> 00:30:53:09
Bare fingers for fun. Sometimes just to see where you hit it
00:30:53:09 –> 00:30:56:13
Wouldn’t be a bad gig. I mean especially, especially the big boy targets. We got
00:30:56:16 –> 00:31:07:00
The big boy target 30 yards or 20 yards, you know, a top pin type scenario and just say, alright now I hit six, let’s say, let how I hit six inches different with that. Just so you know. Yeah,
00:31:07:03 –> 00:31:10:27
Yeah. I always think like, what if you break a D loop or something, you know,
00:31:11:09 –> 00:31:11:24
Happens,
00:31:12:11 –> 00:31:13:16
Happens. Absolutely.
00:31:13:24 –> 00:31:15:03
Yep. Happened to Justin last
00:31:15:03 –> 00:31:19:12
Year. Just, I don’t wanna pull back with these bows with bare fingers. I don’t wanna do it.
00:31:21:23 –> 00:31:22:01
Yeah.
00:31:22:05 –> 00:31:23:01
Okay. Well they’re,
00:31:23:02 –> 00:31:24:01
They’re so powerful.
00:31:24:03 –> 00:31:24:23
They’re snappy.
00:31:24:26 –> 00:31:27:07
You’ll do it though. You would do it. You’re out there. No,
00:31:27:07 –> 00:31:31:00
You would do it then, but I mean to p go practice. Go say you’re gonna practice it. Yeah.
00:31:31:00 –> 00:31:31:21
Because it’s
00:31:31:21 –> 00:31:35:12
Kinda like shooting a 300 rum with no break and no air protection. It seems
00:31:35:12 –> 00:31:46:00
Like Go do it. It seems like Devon or somebody pulled Drew back on one of a bow bare finger and it had rolled the string off the cam and gave dry fire. It was, I mean stuff, stuff
00:31:46:00 –> 00:31:51:01
Had used torque. ’cause it’s, it’s not like our old, when we were kids we were shooting little bows. Yes.
00:31:51:08 –> 00:31:51:25
You shoot a
00:31:51:25 –> 00:31:52:27
70, 75 pounds,
00:31:53:12 –> 00:31:54:21
80% percent bow
00:31:54:25 –> 00:31:55:28
Off now with, you
00:31:55:28 –> 00:31:57:05
Know, with off his hands. Yeah.
00:31:57:05 –> 00:32:00:22
You’re gonna grip it like a gorilla. Dang gorilla Jason.
00:32:01:06 –> 00:32:24:19
That gum gorilla. Alright, let’s move forward. Let’s crank on this last bowl. I, I just can’t get over too many bows. Yeah. Plus the governor tags and all that. Like you’ve, you really, you guys have spent a lot of time and of course the people that you know you’re talking about have done it as well and just done very well over the years and whatnot. So just, just great good stuff. I think kind of the common theme, bro, you gotta hunt where they’re at.
00:32:24:24 –> 00:32:30:17
Well that Bart and then just have history. Yeah. You kinda like a lot of the deer. Maybe you’ve hunted Jason. Yeah.
00:32:30:28 –> 00:32:31:05
You
00:32:31:05 –> 00:32:39:13
Have history with some of these deer. Yeah. You know, and that layers, layers add, you know, add up when it comes to trying to put one on the ground and
00:32:39:13 –> 00:32:41:06
The ones that get away haunt you forever.
00:32:42:06 –> 00:32:42:25
Oh yeah, for
00:32:42:25 –> 00:32:48:07
Sure. Dallas, have you had some of these giants get away and maybe they do die of old age or, or maybe a go
00:32:48:16 –> 00:32:53:01
Got away or a late rifle guy kills one and you had somebody had ’em close in the archery or something.
00:32:53:29 –> 00:33:27:10
Yeah, I had like kind of something like that happen last year. I mean he ended up still living and stuff, but Yeah. Yeah. It’s just hard. Super smart. Probably the smartest bull I’ve ever hunted. And he just, just where he was at and stuff like you couldn’t call to him. He was just silent and Yeah. He was, he just got one over on me. You know, one of those ones that that haunts you. And and that’s why I’ll be hunting, I’ll be hunting elk this year because that one haunted me.
00:33:28:13 –> 00:33:31:18
Well it forces a guy to figure out how to get another tag, work
00:33:31:18 –> 00:33:33:23
Hard, you can’t sleep,
00:33:34:01 –> 00:33:37:21
Whether it be a landowner tag or whatever. At some point you’re like, it doesn’t matter.
00:33:37:25 –> 00:33:38:23
I need redemption. Yeah,
00:33:39:03 –> 00:33:39:12
Yeah,
00:33:40:09 –> 00:34:01:07
Yeah. You just, it’s so, it’s such a competitive game with them big ones and stuff. You just like, you know, that, you know, it could be the last opportunity you get at one for a long time if it’s especially like a draw tag and stuff. So you just feel like I gotta work as hard as I can so I can have that other, or that opportunity
00:34:01:11 –> 00:34:23:16
Again another, another opportunity. Yeah. Right. And, and things do go away. At least on the milder side, we’ve sure seen a lot of it. You have to, it does feel like these bulls, I don’t know, they just, Nevada’s got a number of ’em, you know, and it’s, it’s just awesome. Nothing like it actually. It feels like there’s nothing like it out there. Yeah. As far as western US
00:34:23:19 –> 00:34:25:18
Public land West wide is,
00:34:26:05 –> 00:34:26:25
It’s pretty special.
00:34:27:17 –> 00:34:52:18
Yeah. It is a special place. It’s so amazing how, I mean, I’ve said it for years, like this has gotta come to an end and then every, every year it’s just more big ones and more big ones and you’re just like, you know, three, three to five, 400 inches a year or getting killed in these units. And I’m just like, man, it’s gonna come to an end, but it just keeps getting just as good as it was 10 years ago. You know what I mean?
00:34:52:20 –> 00:34:59:00
Yeah. But don’t, don’t let every think that or your wife or like, ah, this is the last good year. I gotta have another badge once opportunity.
00:35:00:07 –> 00:35:00:13
Yes.
00:35:00:13 –> 00:35:05:03
Yeah. Yeah. That’s what I, I tell her like, eventually I ain’t gonna be able to do this anymore.
00:35:05:05 –> 00:35:06:24
Yeah. This is not gonna last. Honey
00:35:07:03 –> 00:35:11:12
Dallas, you’re lucky as we are. You’ve got a good one there. Yep. So, oh yeah, you’ll
00:35:11:12 –> 00:35:14:09
Be, after a while they see through all your isms that you say
00:35:14:21 –> 00:35:16:18
Yeah, after a while you gotta quit lying to ’em. Yeah,
00:35:17:03 –> 00:35:17:13
Right.
00:35:18:11 –> 00:35:19:01
Water. This,
00:35:19:26 –> 00:35:46:21
She told me one thing, I don’t remember when I really knew she was the one I, I asked her. ’cause we just always on my days off and stuff, looking for elk and looking for deer and taking her everywhere. And I finally looked at her one day and I said, what do you wanna do? You know? And she was like, what do you mean? I was like, like I feel like everything we do is what I wanna do. And she said, as long as you’re smiling, that’s what I wanna do. Wow.
00:35:46:22 –> 00:35:53:09
And I said, well that’s good. Wow. That when you knew right there, you put a ring on pretty
00:35:53:09 –> 00:35:56:18
Quick. I knew that day forward we were, we were gonna be together forever. So
00:35:58:00 –> 00:35:59:06
Yeah. You don’t let that one go.
00:36:00:01 –> 00:36:00:07
No.
00:36:00:15 –> 00:36:04:07
So what about this last one? Well, the one we, we probably originally
00:36:04:07 –> 00:36:09:22
Called him about the one, the one we published this year we called him about. Yeah, yeah. The one where the bullet question.
00:36:10:12 –> 00:37:02:17
Yeah. So, so I had known about a couple big bullets that we, we figure were gonna be, you know, that four 10 ish, you know, big. And I finally got enough money put aside, I said, I’m doing it this year, talk to my wife and everything. And she’s like, yes, whatever you wanna do, you know, you’ve saved long enough. If you want to go get a tag then you can. So I ended up talking to a landowner and got a tag and was after one bull or there was about three bulls in particular that I was looking for. And one of them ended up dying and one didn’t show up till way late. And some guys got lucky and they drove up this road and he was standing right off the road and they gotta hunt him and they hit him late in the hunt.
00:37:02:27 –> 00:37:53:19
And so I was kind of just like, man, I’m just had horrible luck, you know, just, I was in there the day before and he wasn’t there. And then he shows up the next day when they’re in there type deal. You know how it goes in the archery hunt and stuff when they’re moving around. And I, I ended up having a bull that we had watched for like three years and I’d passed him up three different times during the hunt. Just kept going in there hoping that a d different one showed up, you know? And ended up seeing him. I had two days left of the hunt and he walked right below me at like 200 yards with about two cows. And I watched him and I’m just like, man, like am I crazy? You know, I knew he was big, I knew he was right around three 90.
00:37:54:10 –> 00:38:26:12
And so I ended up texting an outfitter from Ely Thomas Brunson. I texted him a picture of the bull and said, how big do you think he is? And he, he text me back and says, oh he is probably 3 89. And he had actually sent me a picture of him too. He is like, I think he’s 3 89. I was like, yeah, that’s the bull. And he’s like, I’m 500 yards below him and he kind of fed with them cows kind of down around. And I was like, well I’m 500 yards above him. And I was like, I’m,
00:38:27:06 –> 00:38:37:07
So Did you text him just to start conversation knowing he was probably in the area? Like just to open up conversation between you two? Or did you truly want to know what he thought the size was?
00:38:37:15 –> 00:38:41:04
I just, I just truly wanted to know what he thought. Okay. I had no idea that he was,
00:38:41:07 –> 00:38:43:27
You’re good friends with him and all of, he had a hunter on the
00:38:43:27 –> 00:38:47:04
Goal. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. I, I’d known him for years and stuff and
00:38:47:15 –> 00:38:48:15
He’s a good guy. Yeah.
00:38:48:15 –> 00:39:41:10
Yeah. Great dude. One of the best people in the, in the game for sure. Yep. And just getting his opinion, I actually ended up buying a different landowner tag and then I traded it with him. And so like he kind of knew what I had on the line and everything, so I just wanted his opinion. And so he, when he said that, I was like, I was kind of looking more off the other side of the canyon and the way it is up there, it’s so windy. Like the one side you don’t even, you can’t even really glass off of when you’re up on top just ’cause it’s so windy up there. So you go just on the other side of the ridge and you can see the backside good and it’s, you’re out of the wind. So when he come through that saddle 200 yards below me, I had seen him, but he went on that really windy side.
00:39:41:10 –> 00:40:30:21
And so I wasn’t glassing over on that windy side. But Thomas and them, they were across the canyon, I guess him and his guys, they were across canyon. Well I would, I didn’t even look off that side ’cause it’s so windy you can’t really even see anything, you know. So at that time I didn’t even know that they were in there until he had told me that. And he’s like, I got this guy with the special, with this special tag that can hunt, you know, a long time. He’s like, you’re crazy, you need to get in after that thing. And so I was like, okay. So I dropped my pack and everything, grabbed my bow and I started sneaking down in there and I, I knew he was with like 1520 cows and coming off this thing. It’s just gnarly, steep, loose rock, you know?
00:40:30:21 –> 00:41:23:02
And I had to take my time getting into there and they got down in this mahogany patch. And so I knew I was close. I could hear the bull and I could hear the cows but like not real good ’cause it was windy. And so I told him, I was like, I texted him on my phone and said, Hey, will you cow call or bugle just to get these elk really going so I know if the cows are in between me and the bull. Yeah. And so he did. And like right away I knew the cows were right there, you know, within 40 yards of me. And so I just kind of hung, hung back and waited and pretty soon a couple cows fed out to the south and the bull kept bugling. And so I was like, okay, well he’s still laying down obviously and about five cows fed out.
00:41:23:24 –> 00:42:01:22
And then I heard him get up and I was like, well, he got up and he was bugling and I could hear him moving around in the mahogany, but he’s like down below me. So I cal called a couple times to see if he would skirt around and like gather me up with his cows, you know. And he, and he did and he just kind of hung out in the mahogany and I knew he was like really close. And so after about 10 cows had fed out, I was like, I need to get in closer, you know, ’cause I’m like, he’s going to get with them cows and I need to get in closer. So I took my quiver off my bow and just grabbed one arrow. Geez. And I snuck down
00:42:04:00 –> 00:42:04:28
Plethora of mistakes.
00:42:07:17 –> 00:42:08:09
Well I don’t
00:42:08:09 –> 00:42:10:01
Like no release one arrow.
00:42:11:13 –> 00:42:15:15
I don’t like, I don’t like shooting my bow with, with the quiver on.
00:42:15:16 –> 00:42:16:03
I know. I know.
00:42:16:15 –> 00:42:22:10
’cause it makes so much noise. So I didn’t realize I was gonna have to get sneak down that far. Yeah. I just thought
00:42:22:12 –> 00:42:26:17
You thought you could run back and grab, you know, the quiver or whatever. Yeah,
00:42:26:24 –> 00:43:18:00
Yeah. Type deal. Well actually ended up having to sneak down another like 60 yards and I snuck down and I had cows right there at like 22 yards from me. And he finally feeds out and he’s 60 yards. And I got him broadside, he’s feeding out and I was just like, oh, this is perfect. So I range him 60 yards. I’m like getting ready to draw back and a cow steps in between me and him. So I wait and he feeds out like another couple steps and I range him again. Yeah. And he’s at 70, so I just threw back really fast and I was like, well I just aimed for like 65 and put it on his back rib. ’cause he was quartering away from me shot and bam smoked him like back rib. And he launches up in the air and then takes off like a bullet and all the cows run off.
00:43:18:00 –> 00:44:02:20
And I text Thomas and I was like, I hit him and he was like, are you sure you hit him? He took out of the off like crazy, you know? And I was like, yeah, he’s definitely hit. I said, I think it was a good shot, but I couldn’t see. When he turned and went down the ridge, I could see the opposite side and I didn’t see the arrow sticking out of his opposite side. And I didn’t see the arrow on the side that I had shot and I had a ox, so I knew I’d be able to see it. So I was like, man, I, everything felt good. And he was like, well, did he know you were there? And I was like, no, he had no clue. And he’s like, well then he’s gotta be hit hard. And so he had kind of directed me to the last place that he had seen him.
00:44:04:08 –> 00:44:38:21
And so I snuck down there and it was probably give him like 45 minutes and I snuck down in there and I got in the big pines and I seen another bull with the cows. And so I thought it was him. And so I hurried up and like just sat down and I looked and there was a, there was an elk bed right there and there was blood in it. And I was thinking like, man, that bull is still up and got with the cows, you know, and there’s like a pretty good puddle there. And so I was like, well, I’ll just give him more time to bleed out. You know,
00:44:40:10 –> 00:45:10:23
I’m like, the cows probably got him up and he’s walking with them cows. And so I give him like another 30 minutes and I stood up and when I stood up directly below me, I could see antler tips and I’m like, what the heck? I just seen that bull to the left of me. And so I looked down some more and that bull had actually must have jumped that bull out of his bed and, and that bull ran in with the cows and he had just like, took a death run straight down and died right there in the big pines.
00:45:11:04 –> 00:45:11:25
Wow. Wow.
00:45:12:16 –> 00:45:31:09
So I walked down there and he was there dead. I mean, it was just awesome deal. And I had watched him for, knew about him for three years, watched him and like, he never really got excessively bigger. Like I felt like he was 3 85, 3 90, probably three 90, you know?
00:45:31:18 –> 00:45:34:16
Yeah. What did he end up going this year?
00:45:35:26 –> 00:45:39:04
He was right at three 90. Yeah. In an eight. Yeah.
00:45:40:14 –> 00:45:42:10
Unbelievable. And so do people he
00:45:42:10 –> 00:45:47:06
Scored 3 79? Yeah. 3 79 and seven eights Ned or something.
00:45:47:15 –> 00:45:49:18
Wow. So you’ve got two in the book?
00:45:51:12 –> 00:45:51:18
Yes.
00:45:51:24 –> 00:45:58:05
Yeah. That’s impressive. Hard to do. Hard to do. And your wife’s got hers?
00:45:58:27 –> 00:46:06:27
Yeah, and my wife’s got hers and then I got tag this year again. So yeah, it should be pretty good.
00:46:08:02 –> 00:46:14:27
You should just go back to guiding, you know, these guys need your help and Yeah. You’ve killed more than your fair share. No,
00:46:15:23 –> 00:46:30:27
I can’t get enough of it. Oh. Every time it gets to be close to my, my mom actually every year when trial results come out, she, she always asks if I got a tag and I just tell her, I just tell her I always got a tag,
00:46:32:07 –> 00:46:33:10
Mom. I always have a tag.
00:46:34:07 –> 00:46:34:16
Yeah,
00:46:35:08 –> 00:46:42:10
Man. How awesome is that? So do people have his sheds? Is there any way to obtain the sheds? His sheds or
00:46:43:17 –> 00:47:01:04
There’s, I, I know some guys in town that find a lot of those sheds. Yeah. They’re super secretive though. Super secretive about it. Yeah. Like literally this year, or it was last year was the first time I seen two sets of sheds off my 4 0 4 bull.
00:47:01:18 –> 00:47:01:24
Wow.
00:47:02:24 –> 00:47:20:00
And yeah, I offered to buy ’em from ’em or whatever and they wouldn’t sell ’em. Yeah. But I, it’s kind of tough because you’re like, man, you don’t, you don’t have anything left with the bull. You know, like I have the bull in my house, like you should at least sell ’em. But I understand their part too, you know? Oh
00:47:20:00 –> 00:47:35:05
Yeah. It’s hard to find a set like that. And so when you do, and then also they know the history too, so it’s cool. It’s like, well I got Dallas’ shits, you know? I mean it’s, yeah. It’s good. They’re not trying don’t even to stick it to this. They don’t even wanna, it’s just, it’s just part of history of Ely. Yeah. Well, you know,
00:47:35:15 –> 00:47:40:16
Maybe in this day and age where maybe they’re, that they don’t even want to let you make a repo of it either. They want the only
00:47:41:04 –> 00:47:48:10
Thing, that’s the way I feel about, I don’t want anybody having a replica. You have one they want, but I don’t want the world having one.
00:47:49:02 –> 00:47:50:27
Right. It’s good to know. Right. I’ve had people
00:47:50:28 –> 00:47:54:00
Ask me, oh, come. Just,
00:47:55:03 –> 00:47:55:12
Just
00:47:55:12 –> 00:47:57:07
Easy. Yeah. They’re special. Right. So
00:47:57:08 –> 00:48:02:12
Anyway. Yeah, you don’t, you want what you can’t have and that’s, that goes for us hunting. I’d
00:48:02:12 –> 00:48:06:12
Want this deer, I’d want his spike sheds. Yeah. I mean any DA off
00:48:06:12 –> 00:48:10:07
That board, I’d wanna see what his mom, his cow look like. Okay. Well what, what’d she look like?
00:48:10:09 –> 00:48:11:12
Nobody cares. Was she
00:48:11:12 –> 00:48:12:04
A big, big headed?
00:48:12:10 –> 00:48:13:11
I wanna know what his dad looked
00:48:13:11 –> 00:48:15:06
Like. Yeah. But I mean, just you want everything.
00:48:16:06 –> 00:48:16:17
Right.
00:48:16:25 –> 00:48:19:15
Pretty cool stuff. The history. Want more, more. Yeah.
00:48:19:29 –> 00:48:32:11
What do you, maybe just as, as we finish up with you here, just maybe just a couple of things that you feel like have helped you with the success or like maybe a little bit of Yeah. Knowledge
00:48:32:27 –> 00:48:39:22
Target, hunting specific bulls. Yeah. You’re not, you’re not elk hunting when you go elk hunting, you’re hunting very specific elk.
00:48:40:12 –> 00:48:56:24
That’s what I like, try to like tell people like, too, like everyone talks about the hunt and like, oh, it was so fun. Like, like these elk that I’m hunting. The hunt isn’t fun. It’s so competitive on public land and like the hunt is
00:48:57:07 –> 00:49:06:03
A and a lot of other draw tech guys, which is a once in lifetime tag for all intents and purposes for them. So there’s a lot, a lot of people are amped up.
00:49:06:23 –> 00:49:42:15
Yeah. Yeah. And it’s like, like the hump part, I guess it’s the, the more I do it, it’s the more scouting and that stuff and falling ’em around and, and like when you do finally get your hands on ’em, then that’s like the happy part of them. But the hunting and the competitiveness of it, like, that’s not fun. No. You know, it’s, it’s tough. You know, you, you lose friendships and everything over it and it’s, it’s, that part isn’t fun, but the success when you, when you finally do watch one for years and get it on the ground and, you know, that’s the fun part.
00:49:43:05 –> 00:49:55:21
Yeah. Yeah. Pretty awesome. Well congratulations. I’m, I I’m excited for you. We just, we appreciate you letting us showcase them in Epic Outdoors Magazine and Yeah. Our friendship over the years, I mean, man Yeah.
00:49:55:21 –> 00:50:04:05
And you guys are, have literally been nothing but great to me over the years and great to everyone. Yeah. You’re what you guys do is incredible.
00:50:04:26 –> 00:50:13:03
So yeah, we appreciate it. And you guys, we love Nevada. A lot of aggressive hunters over there and maybe too many actually. Yeah.
00:50:13:19 –> 00:50:14:21
It’s competitive, but,
00:50:15:09 –> 00:50:17:19
But it’s, but it’s fun. It’s good. So yeah, it’s,
00:50:17:27 –> 00:50:19:03
It’s good. And that’s, that is
00:50:19:24 –> 00:50:20:00
So
00:50:20:27 –> 00:50:25:23
Well maybe we’ll have you on again next winter with another story. We should luck. Appreciate
00:50:25:23 –> 00:50:31:04
Dallas. Yeah, for sure. We’ll definitely, we’ll definitely. I’m pretty sure we’ll definitely get another one on the ground this year.
00:50:32:00 –> 00:50:35:00
I like it. Hey, don’t forget your release.
00:50:36:08 –> 00:50:39:29
No. Heck no. I carry one of those with me everywhere.
00:50:40:07 –> 00:50:43:11
One in each side door, pocket of the truck and two in the pack. Yeah,
00:50:43:20 –> 00:50:43:29
Yeah,
00:50:43:29 –> 00:50:44:11
Exactly.
00:50:45:15 –> 00:50:46:11
All bro. If
00:50:46:11 –> 00:50:51:21
I grab a, if I grab a pack, it’s got a release in it and then try and always keep one on my hand.
00:50:53:03 –> 00:51:01:04
All right. Sounds good man. Well, looking, looking forward to this season. I’m awesome. I know there’s big bulls out there this year. Not so much for deer. Darn it. So, no,
00:51:01:08 –> 00:51:15:18
The deer, the deer definitely had taken a hit this year. I mean, there’s still good bulls, but I’m not seeing next level crazy. But yeah, there’s, there’s definitely enough big ones to go around, you know what I mean? Yeah,
00:51:16:08 –> 00:51:25:06
Yeah. Well you’ll you’ll figure it out. You’ll be on a next level crazy, so Yeah. Alright. All right. Okay, I’ll, we sure appreciate you. Best luck
00:51:25:07 –> 00:51:29:09
On, we appreciate, I appreciate you guys then. Yep. Thanks for everything you guys do
00:51:29:21 –> 00:51:34:24
Give, give our best to your wife as well, man. We should have had her on, it’d be fun to get her take on it. So anyway,
00:51:34:26 –> 00:51:40:07
See if she really said what she said. As long as you’re smiling, I’m happy. I mean, fairy tale
00:51:41:04 –> 00:51:42:19
Happened back in the day. What’s it like now?
00:51:44:15 –> 00:51:45:00
Alright.
00:51:45:03 –> 00:51:49:17
Alright. She’s awesome. We know her and She’s awesome. So. Alright, thanks.
00:51:50:09 –> 00:51:51:06
Yeah, well appreciate I
00:51:51:06 –> 00:51:52:11
Appreciate it. Okay. Yep.
00:51:52:13 –> 00:51:53:24
Luck. You guys have a good day. You
00:51:53:24 –> 00:51:54:01
Too. You
00:51:54:01 –> 00:51:56:10
Too. Yep, you too. Bye. Good luck. Bye.
00:51:57:24 –> 00:52:03:01
I’m sure our wife has said that about us. Oh yeah. Whether to our face, no question. Or behind our back. They said that Of course. Both. Both,
00:52:03:02 –> 00:52:04:12
Both. Guaranteed to all
00:52:04:12 –> 00:52:04:27
Their friends.
00:52:05:25 –> 00:52:06:29
We actually have good one.
00:52:08:03 –> 00:52:11:11
No. So we don’t wanna act like we’ve never heard good compliments.
00:52:11:14 –> 00:52:13:10
Logan. You’d be lucky to find one. Like we got,
00:52:15:12 –> 00:52:16:05
That’s the hard part.
00:52:17:09 –> 00:52:23:15
Even my boys, they’re like, there ain’t no mom around anymore. These young girls are not mom.
00:52:24:26 –> 00:52:25:05
Yeah.
00:52:25:29 –> 00:52:26:10
There
00:52:26:10 –> 00:52:29:06
Is what? At least they’re used looking to her for the standard. That’s
00:52:29:06 –> 00:52:30:11
What’s wrong. Yeah. It’s pretty impressed. I was
00:52:30:11 –> 00:52:34:19
Impressed. Keep, just say, Hey, keep hunting, keep looking. I mean, because
00:52:34:23 –> 00:52:44:28
I didn’t, I didn’t know they were mature enough to think that way. It’s just more like somebody bugging ’em to clean the room or whatever. Right. And so anyway, pretty fun to moving right along. Yeah.
00:52:45:13 –> 00:52:47:01
Before we get in trouble somehow,
00:52:47:02 –> 00:53:20:03
Let’s, let’s talk to Jason and, and Trish Taylor, another awesome couple that we know that are just good people. Anyway, they had a great year last year, so we showcased a couple of their stories. Jason hunted Utah on a random, the one random non-resident tag that was issued for Penit Muzz loader. Oh. And then his wife ends up with a turnback tag on Elk, if I remember right. And so anyway, we’ll get ’em on the phone and razz ’em a little bit. Talk bulls. Yeah. Talk some more Big bulls.
00:53:33:13 –> 00:53:33:24
Hello.
00:53:34:09 –> 00:53:35:19
Hey. What, what are you doing?
00:53:36:10 –> 00:53:37:09
Not much. Whatcha doing?
00:53:37:27 –> 00:53:41:06
Oh. Just, just calling you guys trying to learn something about hunting elk.
00:53:42:24 –> 00:53:46:24
I don’t know what we know, but we had a little fun anyway.
00:53:48:09 –> 00:53:49:03
Yeah, you did.
00:53:49:18 –> 00:53:52:12
You got Trish there? Did she bow out? Where are we at? Oh,
00:53:52:14 –> 00:53:54:07
She, she tried but I got her here.
00:53:55:26 –> 00:53:57:17
She trying to right now. That’s good.
00:53:57:19 –> 00:53:58:08
I literally had to rope.
00:53:58:28 –> 00:54:00:17
Literally. Yeah,
00:54:00:18 –> 00:54:01:21
That’s good. Say
00:54:01:21 –> 00:54:03:09
Hi Trish. I’m here.
00:54:04:06 –> 00:54:12:07
Oh good. Now we know we’re gonna keep Jason straight. No, no. Fibbing. He lies. He’s not gonna get away with any lies so they can have no lies. The straight truth.
00:54:13:05 –> 00:54:15:26
That’s all I do. Believe me. She’ll tell more than the truth.
00:54:17:27 –> 00:54:24:09
Well we can edit whatever we want. Make you look like a king that you are Jason, a king that you are,
00:54:24:29 –> 00:54:27:29
You’re gonna have to do that because she can rip me up. I’m sure
00:54:28:03 –> 00:54:28:18
If you wants,
00:54:30:20 –> 00:54:32:29
You know, this is supposed to be for family father friendly.
00:54:33:00 –> 00:54:33:25
Yeah, it is. This has,
00:54:33:28 –> 00:54:35:21
You gotta keep it G rated. This
00:54:35:21 –> 00:54:38:09
Has a G rated by the G Better Business Bureau.
00:54:42:04 –> 00:54:44:01
Oh, good times. Well, where
00:54:44:01 –> 00:54:48:14
Do you wanna start? Like Yeah, where do, who went? Who went first? Jason was your tag first last year.
00:54:49:02 –> 00:55:48:07
Yeah. So I should start by saying, you know, about five months before that I got that tag. I ate my second Nevada tag and second tag, my second Nevada bull tag. Yeah. And I was just devastated. I had a 4 0 5 bull that I had almost killed. I got Grady, I could have killed a couple others. Anyway, long story short, that didn’t happen. So when that hunt ended, I just, I was destroyed. ’cause I know now I’m not gonna draw. I gotta wait my period, I got, you know, yeah, I’m, I’m 15 years out. All the other states I’m nowhere near drawn. Yeah. And Tricia had zero points. So I’m just like, yeah, we got for, for Nevada. And I just knew we wouldn’t be hunting elk. And anyway, five months later the results came out for Utah. And you, you’re the one who looked up the odds. I had a, like a 1.08% chance Drew the only tag. And
00:55:48:09 –> 00:55:58:27
He the only muzzle order, muzzle order non-resident. They give one non-resident. That’s right. And he and he gets it. I’m like, what do you mean you get it? It is when the results just come out. And I think you called me with a credit card charge.
00:55:59:20 –> 00:56:00:05
No, you,
00:56:00:12 –> 00:56:02:27
What was it? Did I call you? Did I look up your results?
00:56:02:29 –> 00:56:07:18
I think you need to edit this, but you called me and said there was a back door and so Oh,
00:56:08:00 –> 00:56:10:08
Like a way to look it up. That’s right. That’s common.
00:56:10:20 –> 00:56:10:29
Yeah.
00:56:11:12 –> 00:56:25:05
For, for Utah. I don’t even, ’cause General Deere I don’t even care. And I usually just buy a point. But the limited entry, I don’t EI just wait for my email saying you’re a, a loser and you didn’t draw anything. Yeah. Yeah. I don’t even look
00:56:25:09 –> 00:56:39:09
Like, well, keep in mind, and maybe Trish, you can attest to this, but like Jason and computers or anything. Technology. And so when he tells me no, it’s saying this and I’m like, yes, no, you’re no. Have Trish look at it like this is no,
00:56:39:25 –> 00:56:45:25
I I took a screenshot of what it’s and send it to you. You still wanted my information. I looked it up.
00:56:47:13 –> 00:56:50:09
He’s just trying to get your social and date of birth. Well who
00:56:50:09 –> 00:56:57:09
Draws, who draws the one tag and it happens to be your buddy. Yeah. You know what I mean? That does not have enough points to really command much of anything. Yeah.
00:56:57:18 –> 00:56:58:21
Yes. Yep.
00:56:59:04 –> 00:57:00:17
He needed unequivocal proof.
00:57:01:03 –> 00:57:29:09
Yeah. And Jason knowing, so I wanna just say it from a third party, from what I’ve known of you and Trish, you can say it as well, but like, he’s so focused on the one animal, you know what I mean? Like, whether it be the desert sheep, whether it be, and, and that one probably will opened up a whole new scab or whatever. But I mean just, and the, the elk and nothing will do. But the one I’m like, man, he signed up for a grind up here, this pen, which is no joke. Yeah. Like it’s just thick and different and it’s also not your home state.
00:57:32:07 –> 00:58:25:01
Yeah. And but it also went the other way for me. ’cause for some reason I was so sick about my Nevada. I mean, that’s where I should have killed. And that was again my second one that I ate by being Grady and just didn’t happen. And so when I drew this tag, I actually kind of flipped it and like, I shouldn’t have drawn this tag. I don’t know the unit. I don’t know what to expect. And so I had no expectations. I knew I wanted big, but I didn’t even know what big meant. So that way if I do see a three 70 bowl, I can’t snub my nose. Yeah. ’cause I know I’ve got a bigger one, you know? So. Yeah. And I didn’t expect much ’cause I didn’t know the country. So it, it actually kind of went the other way. And I just wanted to make, make it fun and try not to, you know, kill myself over it.
00:58:25:15 –> 00:58:56:18
He’s so focused. I’m just gonna say he’s so focused and you’ll hunt the entire time. Jason. I’m just, I just, you’re, you’re so hardcore. It’s just impressive how you can keep that energy going throughout an entire season. And that’s how you killed a big buck on a, on a terrible year, you know? Yeah. And just kind of make it happen. And so of course, you know, once we get into Tricia’s story, it’s same kind of thing as you have that same focus no matter whose tag it is. If you’re helping ’em, you’re in it 110 plus percent, you know? Yeah.
00:58:57:02 –> 00:59:17:19
And, and I, I wish I wasn’t, I mean, it it be, I love going with the youths or you know, somebody who doesn’t care. I mean, even though that I wanna go big or go home, but it is fun to just go on those hunts and just have fun and just enjoy it. That’s why I like animal punt. Like as much as I have a trophy, you, you, I’ll kill the first thing that’s legal when it comes to an nail.
00:59:18:09 –> 00:59:20:22
I do not care. You and Jason need to get together.
00:59:21:00 –> 00:59:28:21
Yeah. No. Hey, hey, whatever we gotta do to feed the family, that man look good.
00:59:28:21 –> 00:59:33:25
Exactly. Exactly. They’re pretty animals no matter what. I don’t even see horns.
00:59:35:00 –> 00:59:39:07
All right. So here you are, you’re dealing with this hunt. This is a September hunt. And
00:59:39:08 –> 01:00:26:06
So this is the September hunt. Yeah. I, I’ve never hunted in the rut before for, you know, for myself. And so the, the country was gorgeous. Like, everything about it was just literally magical. The weather was perfect and bulls just screaming the entire time. And it was, it was the most fun hunt probably that I’ve ever been on. And it’d be hard to top it because it was just, it, it was actually enjoyable. And I, I really didn’t quite feel the pressure. And then I, and again, I didn’t have a bull that I wanted to hunt. I didn’t know. And so we hunted hard for I think the first five days. And on I think day five is when I found my bull. And that’s when immediately the, the, the anguish started settling in the tunnel
01:00:26:06 –> 01:00:28:18
Vision. The tunnel vision. Yeah. It’s what happens to it.
01:00:28:18 –> 01:00:35:06
Yeah. Oh yeah. Now, now I’ve got something that I will not kill unless I find him or something
01:00:35:06 –> 01:00:42:12
Bigger. There you go. There you go. Yeah. Thus Trish and I and anybody else that’s involved is got misery till this hunt ends. Right. It
01:00:42:13 –> 01:00:43:23
It is. Exactly.
01:00:45:18 –> 01:00:45:28
I was
01:00:45:28 –> 01:00:47:11
Praying for it to be over.
01:00:48:12 –> 01:00:49:11
Yeah, exactly.
01:00:49:21 –> 01:01:33:01
I, I remember one of my brother, when I was guiding years ago, one of my brothers told me, he said, I feel bad for your clients. ’cause I don’t think you could have fun unless you’re, you know, killing big. But it’s true. Anyway, it, it was fun. And so, yeah, so I found this bull and couldn’t, couldn’t get it done for a couple days. And then I think it was on like day seven, I got a glimpse of a bull from probably three miles away. And I just knew he was big. But I mean, I saw him for maybe a second, and I kind of, my gut was telling me that was the bull, but I didn’t know if it was him, or at least a big one, or at least big enough to go after. So Tricia and my brother stayed on the road.
01:01:33:06 –> 01:02:28:19
My boys were on a knob, and then I had my cousin about halfway between me and the bull. So I just picked him up on my way, on the stalk. And anyway, we got up and I couldn’t get any closer from where this bull, he was beded down and I was exactly, this is, you know, a muzzle loader at 300 yards. And he was beded down and, but so we couldn’t see his horns. He would move a little bit. And so then I was looking at my video and I’m looking at his horns. I’m trying to figure out if this is the bull. And it took me over an hour to finally decide that it was him. Like every little turn gave me just enough to see a little thing that I needed to, to see if it was him. And anyway, so at 300 yards, I knew when he stood up, if he went to the right two feet or to the left two feet, I would not have a shot.
01:02:28:19 –> 01:03:21:19
Like the only place where he was beded was about a three foot gap in between these trees that I would have. And when he stood up, I hurried and looked on my binoculars and I looked at the one tree, the white quay with this big black circle. And it was perfectly, even with his vitals. And then the one to the, the right the tree to the right was perfect circle of a black bark or whatever. And so I literally aimed in between those two barks is how I even knew for sure that, that it was hitting him. And anyway, one shot and, and dropped him with a muzz loader. Wow. Yeah. And, and he, it took me, because we were on this cliff ledge, it took me over an hour to get to him. And the whole time I wasn’t even excited. I was so scared. Did I screw, like, because I never got a good look at him other than the, now
01:03:21:19 –> 01:03:27:15
You’re second Justin. Did I just make myself think it was him and him walking up on a three 20 bull?
01:03:28:03 –> 01:03:41:06
Yes. And I’ve never, I’ve never been in that situation. I’ve never pulled the trigger unless I knew for sure, but I felt good enough. But I still had that doubt, like, man did I, I could have really screwed up here.
01:03:41:15 –> 01:03:48:10
Oh. And if it would’ve been three 20, like Trish, we’d, Trish and I, and whoever else is associated with him, would, would have to hear about
01:03:48:10 –> 01:03:49:24
Therapy would still be gone.
01:03:50:12 –> 01:03:54:28
He would still be, he’d be paying 14 therapists and still need Yeah.
01:03:56:14 –> 01:03:56:27
It’s just,
01:03:57:17 –> 01:04:13:06
It’s so focused. That’s what I’ve learned with hunting with you a bit. It’s just the focus is, yeah. I mean, it’s, it’s contagious and it’s, and it’s what’s needed if you’re gonna hunt big stuff and get big stuff killed. But it’s, it’s exhausting to, to you and everybody around you.
01:04:13:28 –> 01:04:15:21
Yes. Very.
01:04:17:12 –> 01:04:21:21
I can’t wait till she can just get the mic here in a minute. Just start talking. It’s
01:04:21:21 –> 01:04:24:29
The truth though. Nothing else matters. Nothing else matters. He could be
01:04:25:12 –> 01:04:26:00
Something
01:04:26:19 –> 01:04:28:28
On fire at work, I mean, anything. Yeah.
01:04:29:09 –> 01:04:43:29
Yeah. When I ate that tag again, I couldn’t, I couldn’t even function for five months. I’m like, you’ve got, I mean, I’m trying to, I’m ready to break the piggy bank open to buy a gov tag. I’m not even a real el I like deer, you know, but I’m ready to buy anything
01:04:44:23 –> 01:04:44:27
Personal.
01:04:45:18 –> 01:05:00:28
I’m, yeah. And so it was just so crazy to draw it. And then I just killed a big bull and he was my number one. I mean, it just, it was, it was so much fun. Like just literally a perfect hunt.
01:05:01:09 –> 01:05:16:16
Yeah. It’s pretty awesome. Yeah. Unbelievable. Well, and and your family was there for the most part. Yes. Like you were in and out and it just Yep. Ended up awesome. And so here we are leaving Utah and you guys don’t really, at this point, didn’t have any other tags, right?
01:05:17:16 –> 01:05:26:16
No, nothing. Yeah. We, we had nothing. Yep. And so, yeah, so that tag ends and my, and ends
01:05:26:16 –> 01:05:28:22
Brother. He ends up big. Like he’s in the, what’d you
01:05:28:22 –> 01:05:30:15
Say? He scored three seventies or something? The three 80.
01:05:30:18 –> 01:05:43:17
He’s right at three 70. Broken. Yeah. But I, I, I washed his horns off so that I could, you know, replicate ’em. And I’m not kidding. I think I wiped about 10 inches of mass on, he had so much
01:05:44:01 –> 01:05:45:16
Mud, just so tall.
01:05:46:04 –> 01:05:48:29
Big. So are you saying you scored him with the mud on or?
01:05:50:09 –> 01:05:50:12
I
01:05:50:13 –> 01:05:54:24
Did score him with the mud on it. I, I’m scared to score him now, but I swear he lost
01:05:55:11 –> 01:05:57:16
A lot. That’s a new trick I’ve never heard of.
01:05:57:18 –> 01:05:57:27
Yeah.
01:05:58:05 –> 01:05:59:12
Yeah. I love he has
01:05:59:24 –> 01:06:00:06
So much.
01:06:00:15 –> 01:06:00:25
B, C should
01:06:01:03 –> 01:06:01:17
Mud on
01:06:01:17 –> 01:06:04:28
Him. BC should take a wire brush to every mass measurement. Just get it down to
01:06:04:28 –> 01:06:07:13
The ball. Yeah. B and C should realize this is happening out
01:06:07:13 –> 01:06:08:06
There. Get it down to the bone.
01:06:09:13 –> 01:06:13:24
Good stuff. Well, it’s a giant, I You didn’t wash that much off. I mean, it’s a joke.
01:06:13:28 –> 01:06:17:24
No, but it’s still fun. But I definitely took some off, but yeah.
01:06:18:25 –> 01:06:24:18
All right. Yeah. Okay. Guide us into the next hunt. Yeah. How, how did we end up with the tag and, and all the things.
01:06:25:19 –> 01:06:33:06
Okay. So yeah. So, so that happens. And then well, I’ll let, I’ll let Trish tell you how I got, how we ended up getting this next one.
01:06:33:15 –> 01:06:35:13
All right. Trish, you want Oh,
01:06:36:10 –> 01:06:37:06
I get to tell this story
01:06:37:08 –> 01:06:39:01
The moment we’ve all been waiting for it.
01:06:39:29 –> 01:06:43:24
I don’t believe anything. I don’t believe anything Trish says. I’m just gonna say that right off the
01:06:43:24 –> 01:06:45:29
Bat. That’s what go with that. There’s a lot
01:06:45:29 –> 01:06:48:19
Of give and take in our relationship, I’ll tell you that. Right?
01:06:48:19 –> 01:06:49:22
Oh, yeah. Who’s taken,
01:06:52:03 –> 01:06:52:13
Who’s
01:06:52:13 –> 01:06:52:18
Taken?
01:06:55:20 –> 01:06:58:25
Trish. Trish is given anyways, the king’s taken. Yep.
01:06:59:11 –> 01:07:00:04
She’s the giver.
01:07:01:02 –> 01:07:01:18
She’s awesome.
01:07:02:16 –> 01:07:18:19
So he kind of ConEd me into, well, what do you think about getting a turnback tag? An elk tag? Yeah. Because to go into not so much detail. My first elk, elk hunt was, let’s say it was not very fun.
01:07:19:27 –> 01:07:22:09
No, go ahead. Why? Why was it not so fun? Trish?
01:07:23:06 –> 01:07:23:18
That’s
01:07:23:18 –> 01:07:25:13
For a marriage counselor, not
01:07:25:26 –> 01:07:27:10
Country podcast. Okay.
01:07:27:21 –> 01:07:29:10
So Jason, Jason, Jason just talked about
01:07:30:00 –> 01:07:32:07
Now tri TRS story. This is now Trisha’s story.
01:07:32:08 –> 01:07:38:24
He talked about his two unsuccess one. Now his wife gets her chats. She, she, he won, won her talk. Don’t shoot anything. Won’t, he won’t let
01:07:38:24 –> 01:07:40:21
Her shoot anything. Oh, I know. A hundred percent. That’s
01:07:40:21 –> 01:07:43:23
Why happens. There’s a reason that there’s a reason we’re on one phone together.
01:07:46:28 –> 01:07:48:29
All right, Trish, tell us all Yeah,
01:07:49:05 –> 01:07:50:24
Just a brief synopsis of the first
01:07:50:24 –> 01:07:51:24
Experience. Don’t say it all.
01:07:52:26 –> 01:07:53:05
Okay.
01:07:53:05 –> 01:07:54:03
Yeah, yeah. Hold some things
01:07:54:03 –> 01:07:58:19
It, what to say. It was a really, really, really, really bad hunt. It was,
01:07:58:24 –> 01:08:01:25
Wasn’t it when you were, well anyway, keep going. Keep going.
01:08:01:25 –> 01:08:08:01
Yeah. It, it was, it was years ago. Yeah. And she had an elk, elk tag and Yeah, we were going through a rough patch. But
01:08:09:03 –> 01:08:15:06
Like you guys about this tag, like hunting about usually brings families together, but not so much on that one.
01:08:15:24 –> 01:08:16:22
Yeah. Not so much.
01:08:17:01 –> 01:08:19:12
We were not so much together at that point. So
01:08:19:12 –> 01:08:19:23
We’ll
01:08:19:23 –> 01:08:20:07
Say it was
01:08:20:09 –> 01:08:21:07
Not a great hunt.
01:08:22:26 –> 01:08:24:00
Okay. Okay.
01:08:24:00 –> 01:08:26:12
Alright. So fast forward, however, I think he was,
01:08:26:25 –> 01:08:27:04
Yeah,
01:08:27:13 –> 01:08:32:09
I think he was wanting to redeem himself. Yeah. Let, like, let’s, let’s do have a do over. Let’s, let’s try
01:08:32:19 –> 01:08:32:25
Fun.
01:08:33:00 –> 01:08:33:16
Let’s try it
01:08:33:19 –> 01:08:42:16
Again. Let’s be ready. The the turn back process is gonna be starting here. Didn’t draw earlier on. So you said you relent and said, yeah, get me one if you can get me a tag, basically.
01:08:43:15 –> 01:08:56:15
Yes. So I basically had to figure out how to get on the computer and get this turn back tag. ’cause like Jason said, my Jason has no idea how to run a computer to save his life.
01:08:56:19 –> 01:08:57:19
Like, no idea. I
01:08:57:19 –> 01:08:59:06
Don’t know if anybody knows that or not, but
01:08:59:06 –> 01:09:15:07
Like, to trust him to run cameras, it’s hard on me. He’s like, Hey, I’m on such and such spring. And I’m like, so am I, I’m not, I’m just teasing. He like, he knows what he’s doing, but still, yeah. The technology is a
01:09:15:07 –> 01:09:17:28
Challenge. I know. Just enough what I need to do. Turn
01:09:17:28 –> 01:09:19:06
The camera on and walk away.
01:09:19:24 –> 01:09:20:00
Yes.
01:09:21:15 –> 01:09:24:05
Let’s just say he’d still have a flip phone if it wasn’t for me.
01:09:24:16 –> 01:09:29:10
I know, it’s true. We developed him an Instagram account one night. It was hilarious. Alright.
01:09:31:01 –> 01:09:32:13
Oh yeah, yeah. That was,
01:09:33:01 –> 01:09:40:13
Oh, didn’t, he wouldn’t even play into it. He didn’t even want us to see it or nothing to do with it. So then at some point it became a kind of weird
01:09:42:03 –> 01:09:43:28
Zero points, zero friends, zero.
01:09:44:08 –> 01:09:51:19
No, he had friends he didn’t even know about. And people are thinking posting, then it’s Trish or whoever else chimes in. And pretty soon it was just weird.
01:09:52:13 –> 01:09:58:10
Oh, I, I had several people text me like, is this really, I think somebody hacked into an account. Is this you?
01:09:58:19 –> 01:10:08:23
Oh, it was a good time during a sheep hunt. It was just a good time. One of those fun evenings anyway. And awfully went. All right. All right. Trish, you the, the floor is yours.
01:10:09:24 –> 01:10:28:13
Okay. So maybe a little background on my side. I grew up hunting with my family, but my family, they’re not big game hunters. They, we go out and we camp like we kill what we see. We don’t Yeah, we don’t go looking. We don’t, we just kill what we find. Yeah.
01:10:28:19 –> 01:10:30:21
Go out on the weekends or whatever, whatever.
01:10:30:29 –> 01:10:41:22
Yeah. We basically, I basically grew up camping, not really hunting. So yeah, his version of hunting and my version of hunting were complete opposite when we got married. So
01:10:43:00 –> 01:10:58:05
I remember her saying a long time ago, like, does it really even matter to scout? Like, can you really find the same animal that you would during the hunt? Like she didn’t even know that was really pot. Like how would you even know it’s the same animal? Yeah,
01:10:58:18 –> 01:10:58:27
Yeah,
01:10:59:02 –> 01:11:01:25
Yeah. Oh, you just look in their eye and you know. Yeah.
01:11:04:02 –> 01:11:31:16
You just know when you know. Yeah. And we get up before daylight, which is hard. It’s hard, you know, I mean, when it’s, when it’s a, a fun weekend, you know, daylight comes and goes and you go out when you go out. But it gets serious when you’re dealing with hunts with Jason. That’s rare. It’s kind of rare to get a turnback tag, like for you guys to say, Hey, maybe we should go ahead and get a turnback elk tag and then do it. I mean, that’s, that’s a pretty big hurdle in and of itself.
01:11:32:19 –> 01:11:39:18
Well, not only did we get the, we wanted the o we got the only tag I wanted. Yeah. Or we got the only tag she wanted, let’s say. Yeah.
01:11:39:27 –> 01:11:42:09
Is that true? Is that true, Trish? Is that true?
01:11:42:21 –> 01:11:43:23
Did you wanna tag Trish?
01:11:45:01 –> 01:11:45:11
I knew
01:11:45:13 –> 01:11:50:19
Exactly what unit it was. I knew where we were going. I knew what we were doing. I knew all of
01:11:50:19 –> 01:11:51:04
It, so
01:11:51:04 –> 01:11:51:25
Wow. Wow. Was this
01:11:52:05 –> 01:11:53:01
Exactly what I
01:11:53:01 –> 01:11:55:15
Wanted? Okay. Did you even want the tag
01:11:57:10 –> 01:11:58:22
Or are we being honest here?
01:11:58:29 –> 01:12:00:25
Yeah, we are. We don’t lie on this podcast.
01:12:02:00 –> 01:12:07:23
No, I really did. I did, I did. I wanted to, I wanted to redeem our last elk hunt, so,
01:12:07:24 –> 01:12:08:21
Yeah. Did
01:12:08:24 –> 01:12:14:16
You have the, you had the first or the second rifle on the, on the November 2nd. Second one. Yeah.
01:12:14:20 –> 01:12:20:04
Okay. So late. It’s a late hunt, cold weather, hunt, snow, all the things, right?
01:12:20:21 –> 01:12:20:28
Yes.
01:12:22:02 –> 01:12:23:04
Okay. Freezing cold.
01:12:23:13 –> 01:12:23:22
Yeah,
01:12:24:06 –> 01:12:25:07
Exactly. In Nevada.
01:12:26:03 –> 01:12:29:18
Okay. Dive in. How did this, how did this go down?
01:12:31:25 –> 01:12:51:12
Well, let’s see. The first few days, it was so cold. It was just me and Jason the first couple of days. And it was so windy. I just remember sitting in the truck while he was outside freezing glassing. I was just sitting there and I was just praying. I’m like, oh my gosh, please do not find something.
01:12:51:12 –> 01:12:52:07
Don’t find something right now.
01:12:52:24 –> 01:12:54:03
It’s so true. I knew
01:12:54:25 –> 01:13:11:27
That he was gonna find something and it was gonna be on the very top of that mountain that he was looking at. I was just praying that I did not have to hike up there. So those few days passed, we didn’t really see anything, anything that we did see, it wasn’t big. So
01:13:12:16 –> 01:13:17:29
In full disclosure, I did find a couple four hundreds, but I didn’t even make her go do it. So Really,
01:13:18:01 –> 01:13:21:06
Really? Wow.
01:13:21:28 –> 01:13:23:16
I’m just trying to look good for a second.
01:13:24:24 –> 01:13:25:03
Okay.
01:13:25:05 –> 01:13:25:22
Okay. Okay.
01:13:26:29 –> 01:13:28:00
I was like, wait, what?
01:13:28:13 –> 01:13:29:15
Yeah, that did not happen.
01:13:30:27 –> 01:13:31:04
Oh.
01:13:31:21 –> 01:14:15:07
So then my, our son Logan and Jason’s brother Travis came up. Am am I right? Yeah. They came up next, right? Yep. And we went out, we decided we were gonna go try somewhere different that, I mean, I, I don’t even think I’d ever even been in this area. So I didn’t know where we were going or what we were doing, but they obviously did. So they wanted to go somewhere different. And on the way back, we decided to stop and look at this mountain range. I don’t know. Yeah. Jason found a bull. It was like, probably like three miles away. I couldn’t even tell that it was a bull. I had no idea he even had horns. Yeah. But if anybody knows Jason, they knows, know that he can spot anything and he knows what he’s looking at. So,
01:14:15:13 –> 01:14:28:00
So, so patient and BTX is like his favorite glass. And I don’t know anybody else that think that’s their favorite glass. Like he’ll live behind the BTX and look miles and miles. It’s just crazy. He’s great. Glasser it,
01:14:28:14 –> 01:15:12:28
It’s insane. I don’t know how he does it. Yep. So he found something. It was, it was getting dark. So we, we had to go back to camp. They were all talking about it. Should we go back? I don’t know. What do we do? So I just said, I’m here to just get a bull. I don’t care. You know, I, I mean obviously I want a big one, but I don’t care. Let’s, let’s at least go back in the morning and give it a shot. Let’s just look. So we went back the next morning. By then, his cousin had showed up, Jake, and we went and looked and Jason found him first thing. So we decided to hike up on him, which that’s another story. Oh, it’s just right over this hill, honey,
01:15:13:18 –> 01:15:22:17
I promise you need snow boots. You need waiters, snow, boot waiters to get, oh my God. Like
01:15:22:23 –> 01:15:27:15
Three miles later. We’re still a mile away. I’m like, oh my gosh.
01:15:28:25 –> 01:15:29:01
So
01:15:29:28 –> 01:16:03:23
We get up on him. We got as close as we could get. What about 758 yards or something? I don’t know. Some across the canyon. The wind was blowing like crazy. It was so freezing cold. My hands were literally frozen. I was shivering. He finally, the, the bull was beded down. So we were just watching for probably a good couple of hours. Yeah. Just watching him, waiting for him to stand up. Finally, Jason gets up and builds this fire and I’m like, yes, I can finally like, maybe get warm, like to where I can actually shoot.
01:16:04:14 –> 01:16:23:12
She was shivering, freezing. And I didn’t tell her. But by the, when we got there, when she wa we were practicing, you know, aiming and getting comfortable when she didn’t know, I was telling my cousin, I’m like, HES bigger than my bowl. Like, that’s when I realized how big he was. Yeah. So,
01:16:23:26 –> 01:16:43:11
Wow. But you don’t wanna tell her then you amp everything up and Yes. It’s tough. Yeah. There’s your bull. Yeah. Yeah. That’s a nice bull, honey. Respect. If you miss it, we’ll go find another one for where we are in the season. He ain’t back. All right. So now you build a, see,
01:16:44:01 –> 01:16:54:09
This time he was allowed to talk to me. La our last el hunt, I had my beats headphones on and I was just listening to music. I didn’t wanna hear anything he said to me. I didn’t wanna talk to him. I didn’t wanna look at him.
01:16:54:29 –> 01:17:00:28
It’s true. So Jason told me this story when we’re in the side by side. Like, what, four or five days ago, Jason? Yeah.
01:17:01:02 –> 01:17:01:11
Yeah.
01:17:01:19 –> 01:17:08:24
He, and I’ve heard it before, but I love hearing it every time because Oh, literally because you walked, that’s a true story. She
01:17:08:24 –> 01:17:09:25
Walked packed.
01:17:09:25 –> 01:17:18:17
You walked through, you would normally walk your wife or hunter or whatever. Yes. Adam, you guiding, you would walk ’em through the shot. You know what I mean? Like Yeah. Make sure they’re,
01:17:18:19 –> 01:17:23:12
They’re super comfortable. Is there anything I can do to make me pull the trigger, make the rest better?
01:17:23:24 –> 01:17:25:21
The trigger, let it surprise you. All the things.
01:17:25:24 –> 01:17:30:17
You got two hours to make it right. If it’s not right. Because when he stands up is not the time to find out
01:17:30:17 –> 01:17:35:07
It’s not right. Yeah. Versus having somebody in your ear just screaming. Shout he’s getting away.
01:17:35:29 –> 01:17:36:06
Becky.
01:17:36:07 –> 01:17:42:17
Well, Trish, I don’t know how, what went on to cause her to put beats in, but she was over it. No, no. She was over it. No,
01:17:42:19 –> 01:18:01:04
Well, before we’d been on a few other hunts. She could, I would just tell her you the normal, you know, just, alright, squeeze the trigger. Take it. It’s not like I was yelling, but she just, she gets so anxious. But this time, yeah, she wanted, Nope, she literally packed beats around and as soon as she was ready to shoot, that’s when she put the beats on. But even she couldn’t,
01:18:01:09 –> 01:18:05:27
But even, even whispering Jason’s voice penetrating, but she’s, and so she’s probably over it.
01:18:06:22 –> 01:18:09:17
That’s her shoot. Basically her shooting protection. Sound like
01:18:10:03 –> 01:18:14:21
He’s trying to make it sound like he’s all calm when he’s trying to tell me to shoot. He’s not
01:18:15:06 –> 01:18:16:27
Calms the trigger. Exhale slowly.
01:18:17:02 –> 01:18:18:22
Don’t worry. This is a once in a lifetime. You,
01:18:18:24 –> 01:18:21:21
This honey matter squeeze. He
01:18:21:25 –> 01:18:25:03
He’s dead. Yeah. If you miss him, I’m
01:18:25:03 –> 01:18:28:17
Even making anybody nervous. He’s making me nervous. That’s why I had the beets on.
01:18:29:05 –> 01:18:31:11
A lot of bulls out there. If you miss him, we’ll find another.
01:18:31:19 –> 01:18:35:10
Had the beatts on you smashed, did you smash it? I don’t even remember what hunt it was on.
01:18:35:21 –> 01:18:36:19
Yeah. On
01:18:36:19 –> 01:18:41:04
The first hunt I did. Yeah. I had the beets on and I I did kill that first one. But this
01:18:41:15 –> 01:18:44:19
What were you listening to? Not have the be song. What, do you remember what you were listening to?
01:18:46:19 –> 01:18:55:00
I, I do, but I can’t remember the song. Okay. It was a, it might come to me. It might come to me. Alright.
01:18:55:00 –> 01:18:56:00
Alright. Gretchen. It
01:18:56:00 –> 01:18:57:15
Was a very depressing song. I know.
01:18:59:28 –> 01:19:00:10
I don’t care.
01:19:01:21 –> 01:19:11:13
And it was a 3 55 bull. Like it wasn’t Yeah. You know, it was a good bull. And I’m just like, alright, whatever. I don’t if you miss or I or low, whatever, I’m not Yeah.
01:19:11:19 –> 01:19:14:18
Whatever. I’m saying anything. Our marriage will stay intact no matter what.
01:19:16:29 –> 01:19:17:13
Exactly.
01:19:19:08 –> 01:19:19:24
Or not.
01:19:20:07 –> 01:19:23:27
Or not. Yeah. Alright. No.
01:19:23:27 –> 01:19:45:17
So anyways, I was, he was, he told me where to shoot this time I listened. I was excited. I I had never killed anything big, like really big before. So I was excited. I was, you know, I was ready to go get him and get him off the mountain, but I also was not looking forward to packing him out. So.
01:19:45:17 –> 01:19:45:25
Yeah.
01:19:46:08 –> 01:19:50:00
Yeah. There was that side. But I was, I was excited. Yeah, it was fun.
01:19:50:09 –> 01:19:56:12
It’s pretty awesome. So did you end up Jason like, or, and Trish like the next day go get him or?
01:19:58:08 –> 01:20:00:21
Yes. It was, it was the next day we went and got him.
01:20:00:25 –> 01:20:08:10
Yeah. It was right before dark and we knew we’d never get over there before it got dark, so. Yeah. Yeah. We went back the next morning
01:20:09:13 –> 01:20:09:24
And so
01:20:09:24 –> 01:20:15:18
Yeah. And all I heard all night is it’s, this is gonna be the easiest packout. It’s gonna be so easy, honey,
01:20:16:12 –> 01:20:16:22
Don’t
01:20:16:22 –> 01:20:18:20
Worry. It’s gonna be so easy,
01:20:19:03 –> 01:20:19:21
Guys lie
01:20:20:27 –> 01:20:22:14
Not Yeah. Just where you’re,
01:20:22:14 –> 01:20:28:10
That’s why there’s two sides of the story because it was the easiest elk pack out I’ve ever been on.
01:20:28:26 –> 01:20:29:12
But it
01:20:29:12 –> 01:20:31:22
Wasn’t easy, but it was the easiest one. Yeah.
01:20:31:22 –> 01:20:32:23
Just, just bring your house
01:20:32:23 –> 01:20:42:27
Slippers, semantics. Yeah, exactly. Where are your tennis shoes? We’re This is gonna be nothing, you know? Wow. That’s awesome. So you get up to the bowl, how did that all go down?
01:20:46:15 –> 01:20:47:10
Who got there first?
01:20:47:22 –> 01:20:49:14
Logan and Tr and Jake. Logan and
01:20:49:14 –> 01:21:00:16
Jake Yeah. Got there first. And so they scored ’em out. Yeah. They were hooting and hollering. Yeah. I was still trying to make it up the mountain without dying. Yeah.
01:21:00:24 –> 01:21:01:00
And
01:21:02:02 –> 01:21:06:29
I was just excited to see him just to get my hands on him and just see how big he actually was.
01:21:07:10 –> 01:21:12:26
Yeah. Awesome. And so what did he, what did he end up going?
01:21:14:12 –> 01:21:18:27
So he ended up going 3 73 as a five by six. Yeah.
01:21:19:11 –> 01:21:23:14
He, and he is not got a very big fifth point on the one side. It’s not like he’s a no
01:21:23:17 –> 01:21:24:04
Big, he’s
01:21:24:04 –> 01:21:25:10
Just basically a five point.
01:21:25:28 –> 01:21:42:20
Exactly. And just, I mean, he is got 59 inch, 59 and 59 and a half inch beams. He’s got, you know, 24 inch swords. Geez. 22 inch thirds, like 20 inch fronts. 21 inch fronts. Like just, just a giant all the way around. Other than his fists just, I mean, just cool.
01:21:42:29 –> 01:21:43:08
A giant
01:21:43:20 –> 01:21:45:26
Freaking bull. So awesome. So awesome.
01:21:45:29 –> 01:21:48:20
Yeah. He literally dwarfs my bull, like dwarfs
01:21:48:20 –> 01:21:56:22
Him. So now you can see how hunting brings marriages closer together, you know, closer families building bonds that last forever.
01:21:58:11 –> 01:21:58:26
Exactly.
01:22:01:21 –> 01:22:03:03
She’s finally believes it now.
01:22:03:12 –> 01:22:09:16
That’s awesome. Looking forward to the next one. I’m sure. This is so great. So what’s next for the Taylor family?
01:22:11:27 –> 01:22:16:10
She’s gonna try and get a turn back tag for a sheep. That’s what she really wants. Oh wow. Wow.
01:22:16:11 –> 01:22:25:03
Calling her shot. You’re not, wow. Wow. I thought it’d say antelope or something, but No, just going straight for sheep. Well, just like the, I do
01:22:25:03 –> 01:22:25:15
Antelope,
01:22:26:09 –> 01:22:31:17
Just like the title of your story in April Magazine. It says have a little faith. So I guess you better have that. Well
01:22:31:17 –> 01:22:35:22
These guys, when they call it like this, they’ll probably end up with a turnback tag
01:22:37:15 –> 01:22:37:22
Manifest.
01:22:37:27 –> 01:22:50:24
I dunno. We’ll, I, I highly doubt it. That’s our, she, she, she drew her sheep tag years ago, so she’s in the same boat, like one or two points. So she’ll never draw it. But we’ll, we’ll try. But I’m sure it won’t happen, but,
01:22:52:01 –> 01:23:05:02
All right. Well, Trish, do you have any words of wisdom for the ladies that are listening? We actually have quite a few gals that listen to the podcast, but any hunting words of wisdom out there? I don’t know. Good, bad or indifferent? No,
01:23:07:15 –> 01:23:12:15
I don’t know. I think sometimes it’s worth it just to let them go out. Ladies, just let them go.
01:23:13:26 –> 01:23:17:15
That is excellent advice. That is excellent advice.
01:23:18:12 –> 01:23:29:09
Isn’t there like a frozen song called Let It Go. Just play that. Right. One of those. Josh, you got Little Girls as they play that around the house. That’d be a good theme song right now, boy.
01:23:31:02 –> 01:23:31:11
Yeah.
01:23:32:21 –> 01:23:36:07
That’s it. Well just let ’em, let ’em get what do what they want. I get what’s
01:23:36:14 –> 01:23:38:27
Exactly, keeps them happy. Keeps you happy.
01:23:39:22 –> 01:23:52:05
We’re good. It’s a win-win. We’re good. Everybody’s happy. Yep. Awesome stuff. Well, anything else Jason? I mean, I’m, I know there’s probably a few details, but anything else that you wanna add to it all? It’s just a what a great year for you guys.
01:23:52:05 –> 01:23:55:27
Good redemption year after the one last year. Yeah. Before that sounds like,
01:23:56:26 –> 01:24:18:23
Yeah, so that, that’s it. Just seal. I mean, it was just crazy. ’cause literally at the very end of 2023, I was just, again, I ate my tag. And then within one year, exactly one year later we end up with two Elk tags and killed giants. Yeah. Both times. So it just, I mean, what a difference it made. So Yeah,
01:24:19:17 –> 01:24:19:25
It’s
01:24:19:25 –> 01:24:22:22
Awesome. Gotta be in the game. Gotta get a, get a tag, get
01:24:22:22 –> 01:24:28:18
Lucky. We’re gonna eight tags over the years. We just try not to let it ruin us. Yeah. Or our wives. It’s hard. It’s hard.
01:24:28:23 –> 01:24:30:27
Exactly. Exactly. But
01:24:31:13 –> 01:24:31:28
Good stuff.
01:24:31:29 –> 01:24:32:18
It’s fun though.
01:24:32:24 –> 01:24:47:29
Well, we sure appreciate you. We appreciate you both. You guys are awesome and just great hunters hardcore and, and just awesome to hear your story here on Epic Outdoors podcast. So thanks a lot. It’s a lot of fun. I know Trish was super excited to be on the podcast.
01:24:48:29 –> 01:24:49:07
Yeah,
01:24:51:29 –> 01:24:52:10
She’s
01:24:52:10 –> 01:24:53:27
Tried every which way to get outta it.
01:24:54:21 –> 01:24:58:00
I know. Jason, don’t worry. We’re on, we’re doing this.
01:24:58:13 –> 01:25:00:15
Yeah, did great. We appreciate it. It’s
01:25:00:15 –> 01:25:06:01
Just, yeah, great perspective. So all Awesome. All right. You both have a great day. Alright,
01:25:06:02 –> 01:25:06:15
Thanks
01:25:06:20 –> 01:25:07:12
Guys. You
01:25:07:12 –> 01:25:14:11
Too. Thanks again. See ya. You bet. Bye. All right, Bronson, we’re Logan runoff. It’s a long PO podcast. Josh, do you know how to
01:25:14:27 –> 01:25:19:05
Hit end on this or do you just do I can do it. You just pull the plug outta the wall. Is that what we do? I,
01:25:19:10 –> 01:25:22:28
I think so. I don’t know. I’m used, I’m used to saving. I’m used to. So saving
01:25:22:28 –> 01:25:26:16
Logan. ’cause one time Chris did something and that podcast could never be found. Yeah.
01:25:26:16 –> 01:25:29:25
But we also talked about things on that podcast that had the lot to do with
01:25:29:25 –> 01:25:40:06
Chris. Chris. He’s like, I don’t know what happened with that podcast. So it was, it was a glitch. It’s a glitch. Never have had a glitch since. Never had one prior.
01:25:40:14 –> 01:25:46:12
As he, as he passed me in the hall, Logan said he was going to get his mustache died or something. Really just gotta make it look a little thicker.
01:25:47:06 –> 01:25:49:06
So Oh, shaved. I,
01:25:49:21 –> 01:25:52:06
I noticed he had a patch off his legs where he’d shaved it off.
01:25:52:15 –> 01:25:58:05
He was getting a transplant, making it go a little longer. Hey, if he’s not on the podcast, we get to talk about it.
01:25:58:18 –> 01:26:01:16
Shane Gillis. Look, he is riding it hard. Let’s put it that way.
01:26:03:06 –> 01:26:36:16
All right, I’m good. If you guys are good. It was kind of fun dealing with this. Anyway, if you’re anybody out there looking for a new rifle, consider fierce firearms. Excellent. Make excellent rifles. Www fierce fierce arms.com. If you’re looking to order one, you can order direct, but you can also order through us. I think it’s a bit cheaper. A member discount here with us here at Epic Outdoors. If you buy a rifle Scope two we’ll and you want us to mount it, we’ll mount it up for you and, and it’ll be the best shooting rifle you’ve ever owned. Now if you shoot it the best, I don’t know, but the rifle itself will be perfect. Alright. That’s right.
01:26:37:00 –> 01:27:05:00
Also wanted to give a shout out to Outdoor Edge. They’ve been long time sponsors and supports of us here at Epic Outdoors. All kinds of knives, whether they be fixed blade, replaceable blade, probably most known for their replaceable blade knives. Awesome. We had them on the podcast a while back. You can look that up. A lot of their new, I think talked about the razor a PX 3.0 if I’m not mistaken, a knife. We kind of broke down, got a project in the works maybe with him for knives of ours, right,
01:27:05:00 –> 01:27:12:21
John? Yeah. And I’ve been using that, that 3.0, that A PX, the new one, putting up trail cameras and the saw is legit.
01:27:12:28 –> 01:27:14:01
Oh, that little blade. Yeah.
01:27:14:15 –> 01:27:16:22
Just in while you need to limb outta the way,
01:27:16:24 –> 01:27:19:29
Just thinking. John’s putting up truck cameras with a knife. I could use that for. But the saw,
01:27:20:19 –> 01:27:21:00
And I’m
01:27:21:00 –> 01:27:21:11
Thinking the
01:27:21:25 –> 01:27:27:22
Pack a saw all, oh no, I, I need to think I need to grab what you’re doing. He’s
01:27:27:22 –> 01:27:29:11
Just checking trail cameras in the dark with it out
01:27:29:21 –> 01:27:30:15
Kicks. Hey.
01:27:30:20 –> 01:27:40:28
Hey. I’m just saying I went to check cameras at like two in the morning on it where Big Tom was hitting all every day. There’s a, it’s a little Ry. It’s a little, yeah. Alright. Anyway, we’ll
01:27:40:28 –> 01:28:04:21
Give, shout out to them. Outdoor edge.com. Check out all their products. They also on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, a lot of stuff on there. But anyway, I got the razor AP PX 2.5 and 3.0. We highlighted those in the June July magazine. Got a little bit of breakdown on those new, new advancements in their replaceable blade knives. So awesome knives. Throw ’em in your pack. It’s time to load. Stuff like that in your pack. You
01:28:04:21 –> 01:28:23:01
Are looking for a new tripod. We have ’em here at Epic Outdoors. The best of the best and the most affordable price for the very upper echelon type of tripods. Extremely fluid, like I say. I mean, we don’t have to use ’em. Right. I’m gonna use what’s absolute best. But these, this is the best we’ve ever found.
01:28:23:12 –> 01:28:37:04
I had a guy actually I was talking to today, was calling to, to buy another one, wanting to decide which size he wanted and says he’s, I won’t mention what tripods he’s had in the past, but some that cost more than double ours. And he said ours is significantly better. Yeah.
01:28:37:04 –> 01:29:17:24
They’re over a grand, some of some of them not ours. Yep. That’s ridiculous. Ours and half that. Yep. Yep. Pretty awesome. We’re proud of ’em. And we have ’em here in stock. Who knows, at some point we won’t. But anyway, if you’re looking for a tripod, four to 500 bucks, why, why not try it? I guess we’d be at six with the max, right? A member pricing. Yeah. Which would be the absolute big tripod. Yeah, that’s the best of the best. Same head as far as the fluid to the ultra. And with the also the quick detach so you’re not tightening them, you know, with a, with a set screw, so to speak, with your thumb. You, it’s a quick detach and just a, just an awesome setup. Killing it, you
01:29:17:24 –> 01:29:34:16
Know? And it is nice to be able to design something and, and you think this is everything I want in a tripod. And you get to do it and then you do get feedback that, you know, it’s everything everyone else wants too. So that’s, that’s been kind of rewarding, you know, not just, it’s not just us that loves it, it’s, we’re here.
01:29:34:22 –> 01:29:49:01
I don’t know, I just feel like if we like it, everybody’s gonna like it. But I don’t, I don’t, that doesn’t really, well, I make sense, but I feel the way, I feel like if we like it and it’s working and we’re use using it, abusing it, it’s gonna fit the bill for most people. Yeah. Well
01:29:49:03 –> 01:29:52:11
Kinda like you in oysters just ’cause you like them doesn’t mean everybody else does. Carter
01:29:52:11 –> 01:29:53:13
Oh geez, John’s
01:29:53:13 –> 01:29:54:03
Gonna delete this.
01:29:54:18 –> 01:29:55:17
Do we have to talk about that?
01:29:55:22 –> 01:29:56:12
No, I just don’t.
01:29:57:00 –> 01:30:04:09
I mean, we might as well throw a little personal oyster story in, I mean, we’re first married and I love raw oysters.
01:30:05:05 –> 01:30:05:24
I do too. Yeah.
01:30:05:27 –> 01:30:09:05
And she’s disgusted by ’em, and so you might
01:30:09:05 –> 01:30:11:09
As well smoke and have that on your breath versus
01:30:11:12 –> 01:30:11:16
A
01:30:11:16 –> 01:30:41:17
Oyster. I might as well the worst or in the world, or a pipe or whatever. Anyway. And she’s like, and so anyway, I, I think I’m funny, you know, little do I know I’m gonna change my life forever and I can never eat ’em again. And I take the, the raw ones that you would get like in a jar, let’s say, but it would just be out of the ocean. Like brand new. Yeah. On the half show. And I take ’em and I hold it up by two fingers and I tilt my head back and slurp it in the extra loud slurp. And I mean,
01:30:42:00 –> 01:30:43:10
She drew goes to dry heating.
01:30:43:19 –> 01:30:55:05
Oh, oh, maybe not even dry heating, maybe a little little moisture in there. And it, it has ruined, it ruined. You’ve been our relationship for a short while. Like, I mean,
01:30:55:05 –> 01:30:56:10
You know, you’ve been married weeks
01:30:56:19 –> 01:31:20:16
Probably, I don’t know how long months, but it, I, I cannot eat one in front of her ever again. And anyway, and then her, even when we go out to lunch and just have ’em like here in Utah, you know you’re gonna get sick, right? Because I mean, you’re so far from the ocean. You should not be eating a oyster in southern Utah. No. But anyway, we do once in a while without her there. But her just hearing about it, I mean it just does her in trauma.
01:31:20:19 –> 01:31:21:01
That’s
01:31:21:01 –> 01:31:40:28
Called trauma It it’s trauma. It is. It’s drama trauma. Right? Well, so whatever little oyster story for you, have ’em on the half. Shell just don’t make everybody enjoy the same experience you like. All right, everybody have a good weekend. Yeah. Go out there. Have a good weekend scout kill report. Send photos.
01:31:42:06 –> 01:32:31:19
